Raiders can send Broncos reeling

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, September 26th, 2009 at 12:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

We interrupt the latest sideshow and return to regularly scheduled programming, finding the Raiders with a chance to send their division rivals into a tailspin.

Check out the Broncos schedule after they play the Raiders Sunday. Dallas, New England, at San Diego, at Baltimore, Pittsburgh, at Washington, San Diego and the New York Giants in a row before they visit the Chiefs.

Hard to see Denver winning more than two of those games unless Josh McDaniels is really on to something after a tumultuous offseason.

The Raiders will have none of that in mind as they face the Broncos. It’s how Tom Cable has approached things since taking over in the worst circumstances possible last season and why Gannon-gate amounts to nothing when it comes to what happens at the Coliseum.

“Don’t worry so much about the opponent, who they are and how they do things,” Cable said. “Let the emotion of the rivarly with the Denver Broncos handle that for you, but the focus as a football player, as a football team, is on us. Better execution. Sharper focus. More attention to detail. Us, us, us, us. That’s it.”

The Broncos come in with a 2-0 record, but closer inspection finds a fluke win in Week 1 against Cincinnati and a one-sided win in Week 2 over a Cleveland team that could easily be headed down a road to 3-13.

Figure the Raiders defense ought to be able to hold its own against a conservative offense led by Kyle Orton, who is charged with taking care of the ball and distributing it smartly and without a great deal of risk.

The Broncos have retained quite a bit of their zone blocking technique, but the truth is that other than last season’s Week 1 Monday night face plant, Oakland would have beaten Denver in three of the last four games had it not been for a Sebastian Janikowski off-the-upright special in 2007 and has beaten the Broncos decisively twice.

The Raiders’ biggest challenges seem fairly apparent _ do something positive in the passing game other than on the last drive of the game, and successfully block a Broncos defense that has changed its personality in a 3-4 defense under the direction of Mike Nolan.

On the first score, JaMarcus Russell’s passing struggles have been sufficiently scrutinized and analyzed. He can’t continue to pass at a 35.2 percent clip and there’s really no reason to believe he will. He was over 60 percent in the last seven games of 2008. He couldn’t have forgotten how to pass overnight. He’s going to come out of it to some degree.

If Russell does sharpen things up today, the shift from Robert Gallery to Erik Pears at left guard will be an area of concern. Gallery and left tackle Mario Henderson have operated side-by-side for enough games and enough practices to understand each other. Henderson knows when Gallery will be there if he allows his man to get inside. Nolan has placed Elvis Dumervill, a 5-foot-11 barrel of a pass rusher, on both sides as an outside linebacker, and can either go after Cornell Green or the suddenly weakened left side.

The Broncos have not been shy about bringing blitzers, and that includes veteran free safety Brian Dawkins.

All of which would make it incumbent on the Raiders to stay balanced (57 rushes, 56 passes through two games), avoid falling behind and get good games out of their kickers, who were nothing short of spectacular a week ago.

Could be a prime opportunity for Darren McFadden to get loose on a screen with defenders already committed to the rush, or for Michael Bush to do the same, smaller defenders scattering like bowling pins.

Beat the Broncos, and longterm its not hard to imagine them heading into Week 13 at 4-7.

Kansas City has lost 25 of its last 27 games.

After the opener, the Raiders are convinced they can beat San Diego and even Norv Turner is telling people his team isn’t all that.

It’s the AFC West.

Anything is possible.

    Priest…

What happened to taking the high road? It doesn’t matter if Gannon was liked here or not. The approach taken by Al and the organization is just childish.

  • Dude

Jon Herrera is an embarrasment. If I see him in public I will try and bait him into a fight. I would love to kick his sorry ass.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

Preist, when you consider the attitude of this team when Gannon arrived, I hope he wasn’t liked. Just like how nobody liked Kiffin. I say, good! When lazy football players don’t like someone, it usually means that someone is working their butts off and trying to make them winners. That being said, it looks like Cable is getting these guys to play harder and the players aren’t turning on him. If a coach or a player can pull that off, change an environment and be liked, then more power to them. But I’ll take a Kiffin, Gannon, or Gruden, too. Whatever brings wins.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

My father always said that those who look for fights usually get them, and someday you’re going to meet your match. Herrera really does have a bully’s attitude. And he’s a little too old for it. And, let’s face it, small for it, physically. If this guy doesn’t learn to relax and to save his energy for a fist fight, or threat thereof, for a situation where he’s forced to defend himself or someone else who needs his help, he’s eventually going to run into someone who doesn’t have the civility of a Rich Gannon or Tim Kawakami, and Jerry’s going to be asking him what’s up with the black eye.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

I think Herrera’s trying to cash in on the fame Cable has gotten for knocking out Hanson. He’s trying to make Gannon his Hanson, maybe. If this is the case? My oh my, Herrera. Look up something called genetics. You’re not Tom Cable. Watch Gannon knock this f’r out.

Here is a new subject to speculate on since we speculate on everything else.
I want to start off by saying I support Cable and hope he turns us around. This is no knock on Coach. Just starting conversation.

But I have a funny feeling in the back of my head that Al intends to bring in Cowher or someone else with a proven track record. He is gambling on JR and DHB and DMAC becoming superstars and theres no time to waste. Thats why they are playing and will continue to play no matter what.

If the team plays well then he has a much better chance of landing someone big although Chuckie and Mikey are probaly not on Als short list. Al knows he wont live forever and I bet he spends all his money and all the OPM he can get his hands on to make a big run at the SB.

If my memory serves me correctly,Plunketthead,Cower didnt win it all 4 like 10 or 12 years,I think???Anyway…Cable is an ex-lineman and O-line coach…He understands the the basic fundamentals of the game…just like Cohwer but I think Cower was a LB but still a former player just the same.Cower been coaching 4 15 years then took a break.I hope to JAA Big Al keeps Cable 4 years and years.
I like his attitude and him slowly bending this team the way he wants.I think hes a great leader that realizes it must be made from scratch
He dosnt like to play O-Linemen that has NO experience but will plug in guys 2 the defence when needed.
These things take time and he’s building it the right way even if hes not gonna be around. He IS A RAIDER AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN A RAIDER,I cant say this enough, even if he aint gonna be here he still gonna do it right

I dont mean to sound rude but @hell with Cohwer and all other coaches…I want a real Raider steering the ship
    Sorry 4da novel

  • AZ Raider2

    Waz crakin Nation?

If Russell can pull his arm out of his asss we can win this division! He really needs to get it together and put that KC game behind him.

Where did the fire go last week anyway? SD game we looked intense, then in KC we looked soft. Which team is playing the Donks today?

  • 4evaRaider

And you are wrong about Farglass being better at running in between the tackles better than DMAC. Farglass does nothing better than DMAC except suck.
    ************************************************************

    LMMFAO Brien!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • AZ Raider2

DMAC does need to get lower tho, like Cable said. Too bad Rathman is across the bay. He’s da man!

Everyone like to compare McFadden to Johnson, but they 2 totally different backs. McFadden IS the same type of runner Fargas is as much as some of you want to say otherwise. McFadden is not “shifty”, he runs very hard in one direction. He IS very fast so he creates space to make his cuts around the edge (unlike Fargas) but between the tackles they are similar. McFadden is just plain and simply a superior athlete. Fargas? Goes down at first contact… McFadden? Goes down at first contact… Fargas? Violent runner straight ahead. McFadden? Violent runner straight ahead…

Besides just being superior and his break away speed (we have yet to see in NFL) Fargas and DMAC are the same type of RB. Oh, and DMAC can catch, but I was comparing running styles.

Was watching Johnson, thinking there is no way DMAC can make cuts like he does. He’s too big and tall for that type of running.

  • AZ Raider2

Id like to see more of DMAC outside and Bush in the backfield. Bush should get JUST AS MANY carries as DMAC and Fargas should be in there just to give breathers to the both of them.

  • AZ Raider2

AND…. HEYWARD-BEY NEEDS TO GETT THE BALL IN HIS HANDS IN SPACE! If for no ther reason than to build confidence. Why no let him return a kickoff or 2. Get him an end around or screen! Where’s the stupid wildcat? We have the personel to do it! plus it gives Russell one less snap every time we run it! And Im not bashing Russell, Im just pointing out it is a good package to have if your QB is struggling.

  • AZ Raider2

It totally wrong what the Raiders are doing to Gannon… EFFING BS! Gannon knows what he is talking about. He wasnt bashing Russell. He was being constructively critical.

    ……………………………………………….

And he should do what ever he can to do that, but look at what Cable is doing. He’s turned a horrible team into a respectable one in how many games? Not many… Russell is the key to a SB. If he cant do it the only gamble he should be taking is on another QB.

  • AZ Raider2

…and I WANT Russell to be the guy, but….

  • Plunketthead

Heck it may be Holmgren but I hope we win 10 games and Cable stays. I was the first to buy a Cable jersey.

All I am saying is Al hates the past years as much as anyone. He wants results and he wants them yesterday. And it would not suprise me in the least if he has not talked to others about the possibility.

But more so then anything else I threw that out there to spark some discussion. This place is not the same.
A comment like that would have got 20 replies last year. Almost all of them ” al sucks so bad noone would coach here except a first rate loser like Kiffin” etc.

  • AZ Raider2

Another thing PH, Al thinks he won those 3 SB’s by doing just the oposite. NOT bringing in the TOP DOG HCs. He did it his “own” way with rejects and long shots. HIGH RISK FOOTBALL is the Al Davis way, and everything we have done the last 6 years has been high risk and it all back-fired. Thing is, Al is still playing high risk football, but now it seems his team is getting better. If the raiders win 7-8 games this year Al will think “HE” is on the right track. Nothing would change in that case, but it will also temp Al togo out and get another expensive Vet in FA to “take him over the top”. It is still classic Al Davis, always has and always will be.

  • AZ Raider2

We would be talking about getting our 6th SB right now if we had found a way to snatch up Drew when SD let him go…. Damn, I wanted that guy. He’d be throwing touchdown passes to Calvin Johnson this week with the AFC west in shambles around him. Oh, man…. I remember how bummed I was seeing him availible, knowing Gannon was nearing the end and not doing it.

  • Plunketthead

    #180) AZ

See, thats the kind of comments that count.
    Great response AZ
That is pure Al and thats why he is playing the crap out of his rookies and youngsters. He has rebuilt this team in his image after easing off and letting scrubs destroy the team.

We are young and filled with playmakers. All Al needs to do is fill in a gap or three with a FA and pray JR becomes what we thought he was.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    AZ Raider,

The what-if game doesn’t work man. If Drew Brees was signed back then….maybe he becomes the man just like he is in New Orleans.

Maybe the Norv Turner can’t lead him….maybe the Raider offensive line doesn’t block for him….maybe the Bed-n-Breakfast ruins him.

Who knows? If Miami knew what it knows now, clearly they would have signed Brees over Culpepper right?

Leave that stuff in the rear view mirror. Our QB is JaMarcus Russell and he has some developing targets around him. And they will show you what is possible this afternoon!

    ……………………………………………….

There are certain things Al just wont do. Getting a “know it all” head coach, or the “sure thing” in any position, players and coaches alike. That is not the Raider mistique and in Als eyes, sacrilege… The minute I see Al let a 3-4 D be installed, is when I believe he might do something as un-raider as that.

  • Plunketthead

I have tried to talk about coaches in here many times. I have always said there is no such thing as a sure fire coach. Although Parcells, Bellichek, Coughlin will turn around programs and make them succesful.
I was never that big on Cowher but he is the biggest name out there.

Anyway my point always was that Al knows more then any of us about football and is good at picking coaches (untill recently). This is over the past few years when the trolls screaming for Al to die and to hire anyone but Cable or Kiff to caoch.

You and 4eva are right on Cable though.

From PFT:Posted by Tom Curran on September 27, 2009 11:05 AM ET
If accuracy is the No. 1 measure of a quarterback’s effectiveness as a passer — and some very bright NFL minds believe it is — then the worst quarterback in the NFL right now is Oakland’s JaMarcus Russell.

Through two games, he’s completing passes at a 35 percent clip (19 for 54). The next worst completion percentage in the NFL belongs to the Rams Marc Bulger and he’s not even close to Russell (32 for 64, 50 percent).

With the Raiders hosting hated Denver today — Oakland’s third divisional game in as many weeks — the heat’s on the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft to make positive strides. Unfortunately for Russell, the Broncos have played surprisingly tough on defense through two weeks (one rushing touchdown allowed in eight quarters).

Writing in the Sacramento Bee, Paul Guttierez noted that on Friday afternoon, “the longest week of [Russell's] nascent professional career was coming to a merciful close.”

Gutierrez noted that Russell still appears heavier than his listed 260 pounds (“he resembles a much beefier man as he lumbers around”). Gutierrez also writes that, former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon (not a fave in Raider nation), thinks Russell needs to drop weight so he can bend his knees better on his throws.

Meanwhile, Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe — a college teammate of Russell’s at LSU — said he suggested Russell spend an “extra houror focus to improve his game.” Bowe said Russell told him he’d “start that up.”

Wouldn’t one think that he’d have started that up long ago?

Either way, between outside analysis and diagnosis and the much-needed criticism applied this week by passing game coordinator Ted Tollner, the spotlight is squarely on Russell today.

And if he fails to improve over his work in the past two games, next week will feel even longer.
