Bowie/Moss is Davis’ mistake

Here’s the deal on John Bowie, the cornerback no longer on the 53-man roster in order to make room for kickoff return specialist Justin Miller.

Bowie was waived/injured, which means if he clears waivers, he goes on the Raiders’ injured reserve list. NFL Network and National Football Post analyst Mike Lombardi, with no lack of delight, added to his NFL Network report that Bowie’s contract had been “terminated.”

Actually, Bowie does not have enough service to have his contract “terminated” and is subject to waivers.

Once he clears waivers, Bowie will go on I.R. and then can either remain there or the two parties can reach an injury settlement, allowing him to be a free agent.

Bottom line is he’s probably done as a Raider unless they want to keep around to save face.

Take a stroll on NFL.com through the draft history and check out selections from the fourth round on and it’s pretty clear finding anything approaching Moss is the equivalent of hitting the lottery and getting instant retirement.

Among the post-Bowie picks that year were 49ers safety Deshon Goldson (No. 126), Ravens fullback Le’Ron McClain (No. 137), Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (No. 142) and Giants tight end Kevin Boss (No. 153).

Players on their own roster still around taken after Bowie are defensive end Jay Richardson (No 138), fullback Oren O’Neal (No. 175) and defensive back Jonathan Holland (No. 254).

Bowie’s legacy will be as the guy who was traded for Randy Moss.

As much heat as the Raiders have taken for dealing Moss, they did the right thing for their team at the time. Don’t fool yourself. Moss was never going to be the player for the Raiders he was for the Patriots. Or for many other teams in the league, for that matter. The fact that other teams didn’t offer a first, second, or third round pick means they had no faith Moss would be productive, or that perhaps his best years were already behind him.

I admit I fell into the latter category, considering Moss a jump-and-catch receiver who never paid much attention to route running, having reached this opinion talking not only with NFL personnel types in relaxed atmospheres at the NFL scouting combine but also having on-the-record conversations with people like Tim Brown and Rod Woodson, whose opinions I respect.

At the press conference when the Raiders signed Richard Seymour, Al Davis said, “Randy Moss was great here for us. We couldn’t satisfy Randy, that was our fault. He’s a truly great player. The idea when you get a great player is to make him happy and satisfy him.”

What Davis didn’t say was that Bill Belichick was able to provide that environment, while Davis, with his turnstile of head coaches, assistants and offensive systems, created exactly the kind of environment that would turn Moss away.

If you’re going to take on a quirky superstar, you’d better have the proper supporting cast in terms of a personnel department, coaches and teammates.

Otherwise, you wind up with John Bowie and have no one to blame but yourself.

Moss quit on us and he needed to be dealt. Bowie turned out to be a mistake in the making. He looked lost in coverage and didn’t seem to have an understanding of when to play inside technique or outside technique. We are better served with Miller back there as a backup.

And AL’s latest brain fart is sitting J Walker while DHB is absolutely failing miserably and JaMeatloaf NEEDS all the FK’n help we can give him!

    Enough already with Moss/Bowie.

    It’s over and done with.

And there’s no shame in that.

During his time here, Randy moss was the following:

    1. A quitter.
    2. A loser.
    3. A sulker.
    4. A Cancer.
    5. Anything BUT an Oakland Raider.

VT Raider, yea,i’m sure glad other teams developed Nnamdi, johnson,Howard,Chaz,Miller, and some of the older guys like Brown,Wiz,Robbins, etc.

The big issue for me this Sunday is to get back to physical run game and start Fargas or Bush.

I said it all during training camp and kept getting ripped by all the “D-Mac” lovers.

Justin Fargas has heart and physical tenacity that neither D-Mac nor Michael Bush can match. And this team needs that.

You ask the Raider O-Lineman who they would prefer to get the majority of the workload, and to a man, I bet any of you that their answer would be Fargas.

With that being said, I’d be fine with starting Bush. At least he gives them power and can also lay the wood on defenses.

Then bring in D-Mac as a change of pace.

  • raiderrej

Check it out… Till Davis chooses to evolve with the game of football, the Raiders will not be a stable organization. We will argue till the day Das Fuer gives up the reigns on the nation!

I love my Raiders and I back most of their decisions, but, I just don’t get the situation with Javon Walker.

I really believe they are doing our young 23 year-old QB a disservice by not having Walker as the 2nd or 3rd wide-out.

He would instantly be our best route runner, and frankly, Jamarcus needs some sure hands out there to boost his own confidence.

Silver, its a no brainer to play Walker especially when JLH went down. This sh!t is insane. The players see this stuff and it affects their focus & commitment theres no question about it!

No way Mike Singletary would be allowed to do his thing in Oakland, like he’s doing in SF.

No way any Coach in Oakland is allowed to develop anything organically in the locker-room between players and coaches. The stuff that produces fidelity, and emotional investment, esprit d’ corp. All the shyt that’s lacking in Oakland. All because Al Davis is shining the light on himself. Up in his office playing fantasy football with the Raiders.

I’m with you man. I’ve been saying Bush all along. Those folks that wanted Dmac as the starter don’t know much about football. I could see this thing coming a mile away. Falling down whenever someone swipes at his ankles? Ridiculous. Not starter material. They need to create some space for him. Screens, split him out wide, pitches, etc. Too bad the QB can’t execute a friggin screen to save his life!

Al Davis is a moot point… No point in arguing that! It’s something we as fans just have to deal with. I feel it’s unfair to us paying fans that we have to deal with it. The best we can get is $100 gift card if we buy tickets??? I promise this much, that if we don’t end this 11 games lost per season avg. I will not renew as a season ticket holder! It pains me to be be apart of this travisty like everyone else. It bothers me more that everywhere I go it’s niners this, niners and how singletary is so great!!! that followed by the negative raider news. My loyalty is undying but wavering! I don’t know who’s to blame for this crap but all I know as we say in the military “the fish rots from the head, down”! I’m sorry Mr. Davis but your antics aren’t worth this fans money.

The real problem on this team excluding 1.) AD & 2.) Coaches, is the lack of a dominant O & D line. If we had a dominant O-line our run game would thrive and even JR would have adequate time to miss a receiver. Our D-line is closer. We afre fine a DE. Kelly needs to step up and we need a new force next to him. Here’s my plan for next year’s draft. All linemen except for 1 run stuffing MLB.

    Our selections should be:
    •OT
    •C
    •DT
    •MLB
    •G
    •C
    •OT
    •DT

I believe we have 8 picks this upcoming year. It’s supposed to be a good year for linemen. Let’s not miss out this time around. Games are won in the pits. Defense wins championships.

  • The NEWS

Raiderrej – A lot of fans are in your boat including myself. I didn’t renew this year for this very reason. I was hopeful but I had a bad feeling. I can’t keep sending money their way and supporting this crap. I think fans have already sent a message with the last game. 45,000 for a big rivalry game, that early in the season. Wow! He took a loss last year? The worst is yet to come for Davis.

Lefty12, the nomoreFargas crowd is dwindling, all the start DMC crowd has disipated. This team has missed Fargas and it is starting to every obvious.

DMC has left a lot to be desired, he hasall the talent in the world but he is not the Gale Sayers everyone in here envisioned. They have to biuld this team around Michael Bush and get grounded.

We MUST run the football to hae any chanc at consistency. But Cable wants to be cute. And it’s caused the team to lack any kind of an identity. Chaz will help Russell IMO he needs a go to reciever to take the bracket off ZMiller so that he can resume that connection.

They should use DMC like the Vikes use Percy Harvin and get him the ball in open field. It would help him get his confidence and help take thepressu off Russell and the running game.

But that is tooo much like right we have to keep it complicated.

  • JB

60% of our offensive line needs to be replaced. Morris, Carlisle and Green need to go. Morris is OK as a back-up but we need another Barrett Robbins type in there as a starter. Carlisle is just past his prime. Green never had a prime. If we can get a primo OLT prospect I’d say move Super Mario to ORT. That’s a better position for him. It’s an easier position to pass block and he’s a good run grader. Gallery is doing just fine and is heading for Pro Bowl consideration.

The defensive line is actually in better shape. Right now BOTH Kelly & Warren are the weak links. Warren is OK as a rotational back-up but Kelly needs to be the starter and to step it up big time. Seymour & Ellis are both BIG upgrades to what was there last year.

Our DB’s areset and Mitchell, if he plays up to the hype, will be another BIG upgrade. Linebacking or specifically the MLB position needs a player there. Morrison is NOT a MLB no matter what the program says. He’s the run stuffing weak link. We need a big run stuffer in there. So, let’s find that guy and get him in there.

Of we make these change, we can win in spite of JR’s crappy performance. Oh yes, DMac gets moved from RB to permanent slot WR position. He can do well there and could succeed, assuming JR can get the bal to him.

My last squad alteration is to get Rankin back and put him on the 53 as the #3 RB. Given an opportunity and the line changes, he will be the next Sproules. You read it her first.

I agree! Gruden and AL make for a very weird combo but it works. Gruden wouldn’t be putting up with JR’s BS. He’d get called out big time and would be picking splinters out of his ass for months. We’d find out real quick if JR is for real or is just a REAL BUST. At least we’d know for sure and be able to move on. With a dominant line and good personnel at the skilled positions, just about any QB would work out.

JB, I think Davis gave Gruden a lot more rope when he first hired him than he would if he hired him again. We only had one really bad year before hiring Gruden. I think Davis pretty much threw Gruden the keys, and look at our defense when Gruden first got here, with Willie Shaw as DC. It almost looked as if in ’98 and ’99, Al wasn’t involved at all! Result: AFC championship game in 2000. I personally believe Davis first started meddling with the 2000 draft. Jano? Come on. Then the contract disputes after the 2000 season. At that point, Davis was set on taking his team back, and he’s vowed to not give it up since. Kiffin tried to do everything Gruden did, to a T. Davis just wasn’t having it this time around, and he wouldn’t if he hired Gruden again, either.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

JB, this team will never win again until Davis is out of football operations. The one thing we have going for us is that Al is running out of money. He may be forced to sell his controlling interest, as the NFL obviously wont’ come to his aid considering all of the grudges he has with the league and most of the other owners. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Yes, I said it. I hope Al goes belly up. You can’t wish death on people but why the heck not wish financial ruin on a guy if his ouster from a company is it’s only prayer of being turned around?

And why are people hanging from Javon Walker’s nuts like he’s any good? The guy hasn’t been relevant for years. He just had some sort of mystery knee surgery after running on a bum knee for the last 2+ years. You can pretty much bet he’s not anything remotely close to the guy who looked somewhat dangerous in Green Bay.

Let Walker go, people. He was a nice preseason story. That’s all. He’s an old, slow Nick Miller. Nothing more.
