Asomugha vs. Johnson

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at 8:09 am in Oakland Raiders.

Two of the NFL’s most understated superstars square off Sunday when Nnamdi Asomugha attempts to lock down Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson. Johnson caught just two passes for 19 yards in last season’s 27-16 win in Oakland, although coach Tom Cable noted weather conditions (wet and sloppy) had a lot to do with it.

Johnson didn’t catch a pass until Asomugha left the game due to injury. Johnson was available to Bay Area reporters Wednesday by conference call, and Asomugha talked with Texans beat writers. Some observations from each player on playing the other:

Johnson: “He’s a great player, probably the best cornerback in the league. I didn’t really get many opportunities in that game. He’s a tough person to go against.”

Asomugha: “You’re talking about one of if not the top receiver in the league. Any time you get a guy with his size and his strength and his speed, you’re going to have some matchup problems, and there’s a lot of ways that he can hurt you whether it’s running the ball, whether it’s deep, whether it’s short. He’s got all the intangibles. So he always presents a problem for any corner around the league.”

Johnson: “Most of the time they’re in man-to-man, and they do a good job of mixing it up. They’ll make it look like man, and it’s really not man. They do a lot of man coverage, though, and it’s just something you have to go out and beat. Against a guy like Nnamdi, it’s a big challenge.”

Asomugha:“ Whether I’ve had success on him or not, he’s still been a challenge. He’s been one of my greatest challenges that I face each week. Each year, it’s one of those things where you look at the schedule and you see who the top guys are that you’re going to face, and you see Houston on the schedule, you know you’re going to have a battle any time you’re going to have to play against that type of a receiver. So I don’t know; I just play my game and try my best and see how successful how I can be. But he’s a great player.”

Johnson: “I think it depends on the defensive call. Sometimes he’s on me, sometimes he’s not. It really depends on their defense.”

Asomugha: “I think every year that we play him, there’s a plan together where I’ll be on him the majority of the time. Not all the time, but there’ll be a lot of situations where he goes to the left or the right or wherever he goes where I’ll end up on him. But it won’t be every single snap. Just as far as game plans in the past, it’s never been every snap, but we’ve always had some sort of plan together.”

Johnson: ``He doesn’t talk at all (on the field). He’s a cool guy. I asked him for a loan when he signed his new contract, asked him if he could loan me a million dollars. I love going against him because when go up against a guy of that caliber it’s always a challenge and you get a chance to see where your game’s at.”

Asomugha: “I’m sure we’ll talk more after the game as opposed to before the game, but yeah, definitely. I’ve known the type of talent he was since high school. I’ve met him since college and in the Pro Bowl and all that stuff. We have each other’s number. We talk in the offseason every now and then. He’s a really good guy.”

    Good news Raider fans.
    It’s an away game.
    You get to watch it.
After that you get to see 6 more games.
Is not watching the Raiders play painful, or a relief?

  • Raider Headbutt

They were talking about Russel and how he has been throwing bad. Not stepping into his throws or moving around too much in the pocket when he doesn’t have to. All true things like you said, but so was Gannons

  • raiderrej

its bad enough that Al Davis trys to ban Gannon to the game… Al Davis bans the fans from watching them. Luckily we have to road games so I dont have to deal with missing any games on tivo but we have houston then new york the next two weeks… its gonna get ugly if we dont win

  • wishbone

UP I agree, but I think Al will stay with JR the rest of the season no matter what because of all the money he has spent on him. Remember last year when he said the JR was going to be great for the Raiders for a long time even if Kiffin didn’t want him. Let me brake out the overhead projector. Sticking with JR will result in a maximum of two more wins this season.

    Rockstar,

Nope, I don’t hunt. I killed a duck once and I felt real bad about it.

Just not for me I guess. But I support hunting 100%…actually, there is a 4 point buck that lives near my house and is chewing the bark off my trees, feel free to come over and shoot it…

Boycott the rest of the season. Hit Al where it means the most. I keep tell all of you Al wants to win, but ONLY his way, with his guys, with his schemes. We had the best team in the NFL when Gruden was here, but Al didn’t like winning like that. Gruden & Gannon got all the credit and he hated it. He thinks they can win with inferior players and a 70′s philosophy. That what you get when you are delusional & senile. If you do go to the games bring signs that say “AL MUST GO! & TAKE JR WITH YOU!”

Andre Johnson was 3rd overall pick in the 2003 draft. We got Nnamdi 31st overall that year.

no complaints about that pick up, except I’m sure we could have found a better player than Tyler Brayton, also selected in Round 1.

Maybe Anquan Boldin, Osi Umenyiora or Lance Briggs for example …

  • beeecham

    Mistabrown -

Krappy gives you the “impression” he has alzheimers? The freakin “impression”?!?

If that’s the case, he also gives his adult diapers the “impression” he’s not going to unload a torrential crap storm into it’s soft absorbent layers.

He also gives his microwave the impression he won’t jam his nappy old head in and set the timer for 5 min on medium, while a frozen hot pocket sits on the countertop.

And finally, the old goat definitely gives the innocent children at his local Arby’s the impression he won’t be stumbling through the drive thru with his pants around his ankles.

  • wishbone

The reason why our drafts are so hit & miss is because of Al. He does a lot of his own scouting and he makes the final decision. How many 80 year old guys can make accurate readings on college players? Why do you think he drafted DHB so high? No other team had him in the top 25 & some even in the 2nd round. Mike Mitchell looks like he could be for real and worth the high pick, but eveyone said it was a reach.

  • RaiderRockstar

even though I hate Lane Kiffin, I gotta admit:

-he was right about Randy Hanson
-he was right about Rob Ryan
-he was right about JaMarcus Russell
-he was right about Darren McFadden (so far)

I miss guys like Brian Schneider & Tom Rathman he recruited to the staff as well. Even Tom Cable was a great hire at o-line coach.

imagine what this team would look like with Monte Kiffin instead of Rob the slob. Johnson or Peterson instead of Russell. Clady or Flacco instead of McFadden.

Lame Sniffen was a real tool, but he was right more often than not.

  • chappy23us

Of course Kiffin and Cable should have never been hired, but let’s face it, not a lot of QUALITY coaches want to work for Old man Al and be expected to act like puppets. Cable and John Marshall are a disgrace when they blindly run Al’s outdated offense/defense.

  • chappy23us

I’d take Danny Southwick over Jaslob Russel anyday.

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

I’d like someone to find one article or expert opinion that said Clady or Flacco should be drafted in the top five of the 2008 draft.

The argument for who to choose was between Long, Long, Gholston, Dorsey, Ellis, and McFadden…or trade down.

  • jhill

    Kiffin ????

You’ve GOT to be kidding me. Another guy, along with Cable AND Ryan, who should have NEVER been hired. Kiffin had zero experience in the position and it showed.

    Kiffin wasn’t right about ANYTHING!

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

I think Flacco isn’t that great anyhow…I’d take Ryan over him 100 times out of 100.

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

The guy making the wrong calls on the free agents, draft picks and coaching hires is none other than Al Davis.

And he is only 80 and his mom lived until she was 128 years old or something like that, lol…Al will probably outlive most of us because we are all going to die of Raider-stress induced heart disease in the next 10 years, while Al goes on pissing himself and ruining the Raiders for another 25 years.

  • CJ Legend 34

Man to bad we did not draft Charles Rodgers we would be on our way to the playoffs.

Wait a minute have I been smoking what he’s been smoking????

  • RaiderRockstar

Dakota: Ryan was off the board. If we wanted a strong armed QB it would have been him. no brainer. and after watching Barry Sims in 2007 and seeing Ryan Clady as the best LT in the draft for the zbs I don’t think that would be a reach. (Henderson hadn’t played a down at that point as a rookie.) especially considering we had Fargas, Rhodes, Jordan, Bush & Echemandu all in the fold at RB.

Jhill: Kiffin was wrong about Hanson, Ryan & Russell? really?

I am still pissed that Sean Payton turned us down on the advice of Parcells….and that Sarkisian guy is doing pretty well recently too….

Al, why is it that when most NFL teams offer a job, people jump at the opportunity to coach one of only 32 NFL teams, but when you offer the job (oh right, you didn’t offer them the job lol…whatever) anyhow, when you offer them the job, they say no thanks, I would rather remain as an assistant coach at USC or Dallas over being the HC of the Oakland Raiders.

I hope you understand that you are 100% responsible due to all your BS.

We end up with Cable, Kiffin, Shell, Bugel, White etc etc etc…and you wonder why we haven’t won a SB for 25 years?

We should make a deal for Derek Anderson. He is in a worse situation there than he would be here. He has proven that he could win games. I think he could do what Drew Brees did in his switch to NO. There is nothing that says his “work ethic” has ever been questioned. He has been scuttled because the team invested so much money in Quinn. Sound Familiar?

Make the deal, put him in Silver and Black, and watch him make the throws that JaMissed-us Russel cannot.

    =====================
You have a REALLY SHORT MEMORY.
    Convenient.

Easy enough to prove you wrong.
Go back and read what THE PLAYERS HAD TO SAY about Kiffin..this AFTER he was gone. (every player says the politically correct thing regarding those that can still affect their tenure)
From Aso to Russell to Gallery to Lechler..etc..players stated they loved what he brought. What he had done.
Guess you were on vacation that month, lol..

And yeah, he was right about a LOT of things..

As Davis stated, he didn’t want Russell. Al overruled him..only a complete MORON would state “good hire”.

Kiffin also wanted to FIRE RYAN. Al overruled him. Then AL fired him.

That’s why the Raiders are stuck with Russell. Benching him means Al has to state KIFFIN WAS RIGHT.

Oh..BTW..as mentioned above..WHAT WAS ONE OF AL’S MENTIONS DURING THE INFAMOUS “Can you see the overhead”?
Was that “Lance didn’t want Russell. I did. And he’s going to do great things for the Raiders.”

Well, LOL, I don’t see that happening.

But I do see Al sinking the team, leaving in Russell because BENCHING HIM MAKES KIFFIN RIGHT.

Try this. WORKS MOST TIMES..not all..but most. (yes, a pain, but better than the hodgepodge of meandering posts.)

    1. type in comment
    2. copy comment (for the vertically challenged, click anywhere in post, hit ctrl A, ctrl C)
    3. HIT THE REFRESH BUTTON FOR PAGE.
    4. Hit the X button
    5. Paste copied post in box (ctrl-V)
    6. HIT the X button again.
    7. Hit submit.

Takes a few seconds (except for those of you that use your index finger to read the screen.)
Works most of the time..not all. Sometimes only one or two posts up, instead of 10.

Art Shell & Norv Turner fall into that category, as well as Kevin Gilbride who almost got the job this offseason. Jim Fassel, Dennis Green, Brian Billick, etc do too.

  • UP LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEER

AL DAVIS IS A CLASSIC EGO-MANIAC. WE ALL KNOW THAT !!!

HE WILL NEVER HIRE A GM

HE WILL NEVER HIRE A EXPERIENCED HEAD COACH

HE WILL NEVER CHANGE THE DEFENSIVE SCHEMES

HE WILL NEVER DRAFT SOMEONE WITH AN AVERAGE 40 TIME.

HE WILL NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO TAKE OVER DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS.

AL DAVIS IS THE CLASSIC DICTATOR TYPE. PARANOID LIKE SADDAM HUSSEIN AND FIDEL CASTRO AND HUGO CHAVEZ

HIS SON IS PROBABLY THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN STEOP IN AND DO SOMETHING I BELIEVE AL’S SON IS OUR ONLY HOPE IF AL WAS MY DAD I WOULD OF ALREADY HAD A SIT DOWN WITH HIM, BUT AL MIGHT HAVE THREATENED TO CUT HIM OUT OF THE WILL IF HE PHUKED WIT HIM !!!!!!!! YOU NEVER KNOW.
