Asomugha vs. Johnson

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at 8:09 am in Oakland Raiders.

Two of the NFL’s most understated superstars square off Sunday when Nnamdi Asomugha attempts to lock down Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson. Johnson caught just two passes for 19 yards in last season’s 27-16 win in Oakland, although coach Tom Cable noted weather conditions (wet and sloppy) had a lot to do with it.

Johnson didn’t catch a pass until Asomugha left the game due to injury. Johnson was available to Bay Area reporters Wednesday by conference call, and Asomugha talked with Texans beat writers. Some observations from each player on playing the other:

Johnson: “He’s a great player, probably the best cornerback in the league. I didn’t really get many opportunities in that game. He’s a tough person to go against.”

Asomugha: “You’re talking about one of if not the top receiver in the league. Any time you get a guy with his size and his strength and his speed, you’re going to have some matchup problems, and there’s a lot of ways that he can hurt you whether it’s running the ball, whether it’s deep, whether it’s short. He’s got all the intangibles. So he always presents a problem for any corner around the league.”

Johnson: “Most of the time they’re in man-to-man, and they do a good job of mixing it up. They’ll make it look like man, and it’s really not man. They do a lot of man coverage, though, and it’s just something you have to go out and beat. Against a guy like Nnamdi, it’s a big challenge.”

Asomugha:“ Whether I’ve had success on him or not, he’s still been a challenge. He’s been one of my greatest challenges that I face each week. Each year, it’s one of those things where you look at the schedule and you see who the top guys are that you’re going to face, and you see Houston on the schedule, you know you’re going to have a battle any time you’re going to have to play against that type of a receiver. So I don’t know; I just play my game and try my best and see how successful how I can be. But he’s a great player.”

Johnson: “I think it depends on the defensive call. Sometimes he’s on me, sometimes he’s not. It really depends on their defense.”

Asomugha: “I think every year that we play him, there’s a plan together where I’ll be on him the majority of the time. Not all the time, but there’ll be a lot of situations where he goes to the left or the right or wherever he goes where I’ll end up on him. But it won’t be every single snap. Just as far as game plans in the past, it’s never been every snap, but we’ve always had some sort of plan together.”

Johnson: ``He doesn’t talk at all (on the field). He’s a cool guy. I asked him for a loan when he signed his new contract, asked him if he could loan me a million dollars. I love going against him because when go up against a guy of that caliber it’s always a challenge and you get a chance to see where your game’s at.”

Asomugha: “I’m sure we’ll talk more after the game as opposed to before the game, but yeah, definitely. I’ve known the type of talent he was since high school. I’ve met him since college and in the Pro Bowl and all that stuff. We have each other’s number. We talk in the offseason every now and then. He’s a really good guy.”

JaPoatroast has no value you release him or keep him no-one will give anything for him IMHO

  • Raider Headbutt

The reason we don’t pass rush is because Al is obsessed with a MAN D. When you have people blitzing, depending on the offensive formation, you dont have enough bodies to cover the WR/RB which means playing zone during the blitz most of the time.

Al is running out of money, and is trying to sell more of the team. The reason why nobody will come here is because nobody wants to be here when the franchise goes belly up, which is coming.

This is what Johnson said about the Raider’s defense.

I thought the Raider’s defense was suppose to be vanilla.

    =====================
    No, mental midget.
The reason no one wants to come to Oakland is because no one is in charge. Because the losing continues. Because Oakland is the laughingstock of the NFL. Because almost every player, to a man, who leaves Oakland makes it clear it was a bad experience.

Ignorant take, as usual, from you.

BTW..good of you to come out of the closet. Explains lots of things.

We can all agree that Kiffin was wrong about Brady Quinn. He has been benched in favor of a qb that threw 3 int’s last week.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

Raider Dogg, some reports had Kiffin wanting Peterson, some had him wanting C. Johnson. Unless you have a quote by Kiffin, there’s no way of knowing he wanted Quinn.

  • raidertay

We all know that JR has sucked royally. But I cant help but wonder what he could do with some descent and reliable WRs.

I hate to say it, but things seem to have started going down hill the moment Bruce Allen walked out the door.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

Richochet, nobody cares about Al’s meddling. Most of these good coaches around the league like Payton and Whisenhunt would let Al put literal puppet strings on them if he really had the money to pay them. Bottom line is, he doesn’t have the money. He would have hired those guys then scapegoated them in the first season, to have an excuse not to pay them. He would have pushed them into acting insubordinate so he could get documentation on them, like he did with Kiffin. It’s all about money, Richochet. That’s how it works in the real world. But you’re not living in the real world, so what’s the point?

And, you only quoted half of my Garcia quote. I said that Brien always accuses me of having a man crush on Garcia, so I’d might as well pretend I do. You just quoted the pun part of it. But ,your only goal is to win arguments, not to discuss anything or to learn or to teach. You’re just a person who needs to fight. And since you don’t have the courage to fight in the real world with people who push you around every single day, you fight on the internet. Sad thing is, you get pushed around on the internet, too. You’re just in denial of it.

  • wishbone

When AL says the only thing that matters is winning it’s the same as Hitler telling the Germans the same thing. However what they really mean is the only thing that matters is doing things my way. I believe Al is mentally just as looney as Hitler was. Too bad Al doesn’t have enuff guts to do what Hitler did when he saw the end was near. JUST DIE AL!!!

I don’t have a quote for you and no time to do the research. I guess I just pulled that one outta my a$$, but I could have sworn that I heard, a few times, that Kiffin coveted Quinn over Russell because of his experience in a pro style/WC offense.

Vegas Raider of course I’m rooting for the Jets. AFC over NFC, all day every day. If you don’t like what Rex Ryan in the Jets are doing you’re not a football fan. That’s how I see it. Saints are good, too. But there’s just something so puzzy azz about the NFC. Cowboys were an exception when Parcells was there.

    MR,

The Bears a few years ago were pretty smashmouth as well, but I agree, Rex Ryan is doing something special over there. That D is sick, and I only caught the last few plays of their game last week. I did see the last Titans offensive play, a 4th and 15 or something, and I swear they sent at least 7 guys in the pass-rush, and still had two guys in the area where the ball was thrown.

Good D’s like theirs seem like there is 12 or 13 guys on the field sometimes. And the Raiders look like they have 9 guys out there sometimes.

Vegas Raider, Al’s in the beginning stages of bankruptcy, is what he’s in. As far as dementia goes, he’s been demented for decades. But being demented doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t run a football team. If your genuine goal is to win, you’ll find a way too. His goal isn’t to win. It’s to save as much money as he can. He pays players big to give the impression he’s still loaded. But of course those contracts are laced with incentives and are back loaded. The reason Al won’t hire a real head coach or GM is because he can’t afford to. He’s trying to make it look like everything is ok. He’s a pathological liar is what he is.

In the Land of Oak, its subjects grow restless and weary of the Long Drought. It has been more than six years since the Silver & Black Army vanquished a formidable foe in the dead of winter.

Most members of this Nation blame the Supreme Commander of the Silver & Black. In his day, he was a ruthless, merciless leader and evaluator of men, challenging any and all to do battle and be humiliated on the field of play by superior warriors locked in mortal combat one on one with lesser men with slower 40 times.

The Supreme Commander turned a def ear to the Nation and they grew to resent him. Even after fleeing the Land of Oak to the City of Angels, the Dark One was accepted upon his return by the subjects of the Land of Oak with the promise of glory days restored.

However, years of bitter conflict with the Striped Ones – enforcers of The Code, the select group who control the League of Football, and deterioration of the relationship with the one called Chuckie have lead to his downfall and defeat after humiliating defeat at the hands of lesser armies with inferior warriors but more engaging captains and leaders.

Not even Nnamdi the Shadow, counting his bountiful collection of riches bestowed upon him by the Dark One, with all the talent in the world, was able to right the ship.

The Dark One turned to JaMarcus the Arm and Darrius the Quick to strike fear in the hearts of defensive coordinators the League over.

The inexperience of these warriors, coupled with the lack of vision and leadership of their captain, known as the Cable Guy, has led to more suffering amongst the Nation.

The Army of the Silver & Black is set to do battle with the Texans of Houston and is certain to be underestimated and counted as finished before the fight even begins.

The Army requires the support of the subjects, of course. But the Supreme Commander is unlikely to change his strategy, as he is old, decrepit, and set in his ways.

Vegas Raider, I’m not familiar with Donald Sterling and how he runs the Clippers. I do follow Al Davis, on the other hand. I think he tries to balance the image of being an owner who wants to win with the reality of being dead broke. I think the difference between him and Sterling is that Sterling doesn’t care about his image as an NBA pioneer or a winning GM, or anything like that, as Al Davis. Sterling’s just a penny pinching shiest. Al Davis is in the NFL hall of fame and is as responsible for the NFL being what it is today as anyone. He cares. He wants to win. But he’s broke. And doesn’t want to face the fact that his management of the team is the reason they’re broke, nor does he want people to know it.

Do you have any quotes to REFUTE my claim about Kiffin wanting to draft Quinn or to back up your claim that he wanted AP or Chris Johnson for that matter? I looked to find any quote regarding who Kiffin wanted to draft that year and I couldn’t find anything about Chris Johnson or AP. I did find several articles quoting Al Davis at his now infamous Overhead Projector press conference, saying that Kiffin wanted to draft Quinn over Russell. Everything else is specualtion and all of it is about Kiffin NOT wanting Russell. Not one mention of C Johnson or AP.

The only person that I remember mentioning that they wanted Chris Johnson was BHP leading up to that draft.

JaMarcus the Arm was regarded by all as the most prized warrior in his class and stood out amongst the rest both because of his talents and imposing size.

Being branded a buffoon and failure, for luck, he carved in his head a brohawk.

The strategy installed for the Army of the Silver & Black mandated that he throw the Pigskin as far as the eye could see. But as it turns out, Darrius the Quick, enlisted to snare the Pigskin from the sky, is a complete and utter disappointment.

Another swift warrior – more skilled and adept to war – Chaz the Beast – is slowly healing from wounds inflicted during preparation for battle and the only hope for JaMarcus the Arm.

Raider Dogg, no, I don’t have any quotes by Kiffin to refute your claim, yet, I didn’t state anything as fact. You did. Kiffin may have wanted Quinn. But he never said so. MR,

The Raiders spend money. Being broke has nothing to do with it. Al has spent enough money over the last several years to be a winning team.

However, it is WHERE he has spent the money that is the problem.

    1. Won’t pay a decent coaching staff
    2. Will overpay for lower level FA talent
    3. Drafts like a fool and wastes money on people like Russell, DHB (though I think he needs another year), Huff, Gallery, and others
    4. Continues to spend money on stupid self-promoting promos and videos
    5. Keeps idiots on his radio crew
    6. Pays scouts that he never listens to come draft day
    7. Pays a Defensive coordinator he never listens to come game day
    8. Keeps “Smoke potting guy” Herrea (or whatever the hell his name is) on his staff

and the list goes on and on…
