Jeff Garcia on Myers-Hartman show

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, October 2nd, 2009 at 5:52 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Portions of a transcript of an interview on the Fox Sports syndicated Chris Myers-Steve Hartman radio show with quarterback Jeff Garcia that pertained to his time with the Raiders:

Q: Still in shape, want to play, correct?

Garcia: I’m always going to want to stay in shape and I do feel like I have life left in me, I still have football life left in me, and yeah, if the right opportunity presented itself I would definitely listen to it. I feel like I can definitely give to a team in a lot of ways as far as abilites on the field and also helping a young guy out or helping another quarterback out in any way that it may come about. But’ I’m definitely hungry to play this game and still looking for that opportunity. If it doesn’t present itself, I think that would be the unfortunate side of how this game may come to an end for me, but there’s a lot to be thankful for and as far as the great experiences and the career that I have had.

Q: If Al Davis said he made a mistake and said he needs you to come back and he’dmake you the starter what would you say?

Garcia: First of all . . . it would never happen., I understand what you’re saying. That’s for Al to figure out as far as presenting that sort of opportunity. I just felt that for what I went in for, both from a contract standpoint and the situation, as far as I was concerned, I have no problem going into a situation and helping a young guy out and really trying to help the team out overall more than anything. I just feel like it’s an unfortunate situation where the entire work ethic and the entire goal of the team is put upon one guy’s shoulders who really isn’t ready for that situation or ready to take on that sort of responsibility. I’m not saying JaMarcus can never be that guy, it’s just that right now, he’s still young, he has a lot of growth that needs to take place from a mental standpoint, from a physical standpoint, yeah the guy is extremely talented. When you put him on the field in a one-on-one workout situation he’ll make every throw for you. But when it comes down to making things happen in the heat of the battle and rallying the troops around you and making a case for the team, that’s where maybe things aren’t where they need to be. Right now that team is going through those growing pains, and I think that I could have helped in a lot of ways. Had I still been there and maybe had that opportunity to step on the field, and lead the team and really show what it takes from a standpoint of leadership and work ethic and knowledge of the game, but the way things were working out, and the contract that I signed I didn’t feel that it was the right situation for me to be there anymore.

Q: You thought so difficult rather do nothing than be there . . . was it that bad?

Garcia: It was to a point where I just felt there were guys who just walked through those doors who were there to collect a check and not really interested in putting everything that they had within themselves on to the football field. That was the frustrating thing for me to see. There are a lot of good young guys in that locker room who really want to do whatever it takes to win, but unfortunately it’s not everybody, and in order to compete at this level, in this game, everybody needs to be on board, everybody needs to be on the same page. Everybody needs to really be accountable and be able to look at each other and have responsibility within themselves if they’re going to bring the best that they have to bring. Not just on Sunday, but every single day during the work week. When you’re not seeing that, and maybe that’s because that’s how things have been for a number of years now and they just don’t see the hope, but I was the guy who was trying to bring a fresh outlook, a fresh new start. I was trying to be that kind of guy who could help motivate my teammates or help create a certain attitude, a certain mentality, and it was just tough to break through to everybody. That’s where I just found it was more discouraging than encouraging and for me at this point in my career, being 39 years old, as much as it meant so much for me to return back home and be close to the family and friends and play for a team that I grew up watching as a kid, to see the reality of the situation and realize what I may be up against, staying here for the entire year, and it hurt me, it broke my heart to do that, step up like that, but I just felt like it was something I really didn’t want to put myself through anymore.

For what it’s worth, I think Garcia may be regretting his decision to be released because he realizes he actually did have a chance to start.

No way any Coach in Oakland is allowed to develop anything organically in the locker-room between players and coaches. The stuff that produces fidelity, and emotional investment, esprit d’ corp. All the shyt that’s lacking in Oakland. All because Al Davis is shining the light on himself. Up in his office playing fantasy football with the Raiders.

Fits right in with what Garcia saying, no?

  4. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Contrary to some…the Raiders are much better off playing Russell and slogging through ths.

Jeff Garcia is a good fit for a veteran team on the cusp of a deep playoff run or Super Bowl. A team like Minnesota (before Favre) or Bears (before Cutler) or the Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins.

To put a vet at that late stage of his career on a young and developing team would be a waste of time. At best, the Raiders go 7-9 or 8-8 with Garcia. And I still am not sure he could execute the deep passing game here (Which is the root cause of the nonsense here).

Playing Garcia is like procrastinating on that big report for work/school. Sure, put it off for a while and enjoy the days care-free. But eventually things come due. And that’s when you start working all-nighters and stressing yourself out.

If we play Garcia, the whole offseason will be spent on scouring the free agency wire or looking for a trade.

Play Russell…slog through this…and get the answers we need

  5. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    KoolKell,

You are right about the culture and the way things seem to get done here. Al Davis has to give Tom Cable the authority to play/bench anyone at his discretion and his discretion alone. Whether that be Russell, DMAC, Heyward-Bey or Greg Ellis hell…even Nnamdi.

Cable has to have full authority and he doesn’t have it.

Just like Jim Zorn and Wade Phillips are emaciated by their owners in their respective cities.

These strong-arm/willed owners fail, fail, fail!

  6. ragin Says:

F this guy, he is washed up And russell is 1-0 against him…

  7. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I also don’t understand the hype around this guy. I always saw Garcia as a backup QB. Even going back to the Cleveland/Detroit days.

Everywhere he goes, the teams try to replace him. Gruden wanted Favre and then played Griese, Philly had McNabb and Detroit and Cleveland (two QB needy teams at the time) freely let him go for nothing. Saying nothing of his original team in San Francisco.

If you didn’t like Josh McCown or Culpepper…you aren’t going to like this guy either

  8. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Guys like Tomlin, Singletary, Coughlin have full command and respect in that lockerroom and full control over who plays and doesn’t play.

Davis still doesn’t get it! And he is supposed to be a visionary and all that

Oakland sucks and its Al’s fault for giving millionaire children the freedom to be spoiled bishes. This isn’t the 70’s oakland blue collar teams who took pride in being able to work their azzes off, oh no, this is the pimped out, super star athlete League where dog killers and woman beaters get top billing.

Paying ridiculous salaries to infants is the epitome of whats wrong with todays billion dollar NFL.

  11. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Nnamdi21,

Perhaps…but this has been a problem for longer than any player has been on the roster. Gannon was talking the same stuff 10 yrs ago. Shanahan was fired in part because he wouldn’t let players sit on their helmets.

Davis wants 100% control of player personnell and significant input in game planning…fine…

But you gotta let the coach run the team!

  12. jhill Says:

The hype around this guy was that he was a Raider. Good press or bad press, the Raiders are relevant to a lot of people.

A lot of the complaining is getting old. The Raiders are not winning because the other team has been better. Plain and simple. Coaching, QB play, rookie WRs, Oline, LBs, 3rd corner, too hot, not enough gatorade, whatever!

SD game – special teams sucked, dropped TD kills us, bad 4th qtr defense. Lose by 4 pts.

KC – defense won a ugly game. Shyt happens sometimes.

Den – defense couldn’t over come 2 picks, and 3 fumbles. Denver’s Dline and Oline kicked our arses all over the field.

It’s football and it goes like that sometime!

We need to come out and kick Houston in the teeth on both sides of the line, and not turn the F’ing ball over! Those 2 things happen, and we win the game. Stats, smats, rookies, and cookies. Kick em in the teeth, and don’t turn the ball over. I guarantee you that philosophy wins more games than not!

You hit it on the head..but actually..Al’s problem is that HE STILL THINKS HE’S THE COACH.

He truly still wants total control. Wants the players answering to him. Still thinks his ways are best. Still reads those old 70’s newsclips that called him “brilliant” and refuses to believe things have changed.

Can’t you just see Al up in his booth?

After a play run amuk, he mutters “I would have called this play/defense” and soon convinces himself that he actually DID make that call prior to the snap, and is convinced no one is better at GM/HC than he.”

Yep, the Emperor has no clothes (and in Al’s case, no hair)

I completely disagree with this statement. I guess Garcia didn’t see how Russell played coming from behind in the SD and KC games. When it mattered most the kid rallied the offense and drove them the length of the field for potential game winning TD’s.

I do recall Garcia trying to do that very thing as a Buc last year against the Raiders, could have got his team into the playoffs. I also remember how awful he looked in that last drive, culminated with a Trevor Scott sack and a Raider victory.

When Garcia mentioned guys just collecting checks, for some reason Tommy Kelly’s image popped into my head.

What a sad state the Raiders are in. Right now they are a three ring circus. Al is the head clown. What a joke things have become. Just when you think they have hit rock bottom they sink to further depths !!

  18. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Nnamdi21,

Mike Tomlin benched Casey Hampton when he showed up out of shape. He benched Mendenhall because of playbook issues…threatening Limas Sweed because he dropped a TD pass against Cincy

Mike Singletary (my favorite coach in the NFL) gave that famous “I want winners” speech….Sent Vernon Davis (a high draft pick doing jack sh…at the time) to the showers DURING THE GAME!

The Cowboys jettisoned T.O because of attitude…as did Philly

Bill Belicheck benched Drew Bledsoe and stayed with Brady even after Bledsoe was healthy

Al Davis would never let the above happen. AND THAT IS THE REASON WHY THIS FOOTBALL TEAM HAS BEEN SO BAD THE LAST 6 YRS AND 18 OF THE LAST 21 YEARS!

    KoolKell,

You are right about the culture and the way things seem to get done here. Al Davis has to give Tom Cable the authority to play/bench anyone at his discretion and his discretion alone.
    ———-
Cable doesn’t have it, and the players know it, ergo nothing organically is allowed to develop in the locker room and field between Coaches & Players.

The Players know it’s a lost cause, so they collect their substantial paychecks and live for another day and opportunity.

They’re not going to kill themselves in a lost cause.

  21. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Let’s be real here. If a Mike Singletary or Bill Parcells was coaching here without restriction….do you think we would be hearing about the QB showing up out of shape? Do you think the right tackle would lead the league in penalties? Do you think a running back fumbling up and down the field would still play? Or a wide receiver that’s only redeeming value is his 40x?

No! Good coaches set the tone for the team during the season and the offseason. They reward the players that exhibit the qualities necessary to succeed and jettison in short order those that don’t

AL Davis just sits there lording over this mess. His coaches are nothing more than coordinators…not a head coach amoung them!

  22. KoolKell Says:

Sure the Raiders won’t be the same without Davis. But the same is 25-76

    ——————————————————

I just think that is such an easy out, man! I understand where you guys are coming from BUT IMO that is the type of talk that allows this BS to keep going!

Cable is the one calling the plays. So what AL this, and Al that. I don’t think that anyone can argue that Cable just looks …. well lets just say at times you find yourself asking the TV (or probably screaming) WTF are you thinking! I mean, no matter what side of the fence you fall on regarding the struggling passing game, I bet EVERYONE agrees that Cable’s play calling is bad. Not AL’s, but Cable AND Marshall, the guys with the headsets on.

The coaches need to be held accountable for what happens on the field on Sunday’s. F the rest of the soap opera BS! Have YOUR game plan prepared, and make YOUR adjustments.

  24. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    JHill,

19 of 22 1st & 2nd round picks for Oakland have busted out. Asomugha, Howard and Seabass being the only non-busts. You telling me all those players were bad?

The Owner’s meddling hurts preparation. Whereas the players in San Fran are running hills and doing everything in their collective powers to meet the coaches high expectations….in Oakland, the QB shows up overweight, the O-Line is a penalty machine, the team has sloppy azz practices two days before the game….

All that crap goes back to a head coach that has limited control of his team.

And that’s why this team runs out of gas in the 4th QTR, is penalty stricken, can’t hold the football, makes bad reads at the QB and all that crap.

Because they don’t do the little things right and the damn team is generally unprepared.

Remember what Ellis said? Players partying it up before the game.

Tomlin or Singletary would just straight cut you for that garbage.

Not in Oakland! Because we have so many great playahs!

    N Harris

We don’t draft football players, but we do draft athletes! That’s the problem!!

  26. Raider O Says:

We always go with the flashy pick!!
We need to start drafting football players, and no more projects in the 1st round. We need starters who can play right away. We are not a great team that can afford to draft projects for later. We need help, and we need it now.

Remind me not to smoke, and talk about love at 4am!

    Legalize it!

  27. texguy Says:

However bad Russell is, bringing Garcia back would be worse.

  28. jhill Says:

I just think that over analyzing SnB …

The rookie Murphy hold on the ball instead of giving the refs a reason to look at it, we win the SD game and are 2-1. No one thought we would be anywhere close to undefeated so the Denver game was just a loss at the end of the day. I’m not buying this doomsday scenario for the year with our skill players on offense and defense. The guys with the headsets need to do a better job on SUNDAY!

  29. Raider O Says:

Garcia is not the answer! IMO
We need to draft better, trade better, and sign better FAs!
    G Wilson
    TK
    Warren
    Hall
    Moss
    And drafting hasn’t been better!
We also need stability at coaching, and I’m starting to think Cable is not the answer.

  30. jhill Says:

    Wassup O,

That was funny stuff this mng!

Glad you had a good time!

  31. Plunketthead Says:

I am confident that Cable will get the Oline run blocking again.
Its one thing he seems to be able to do no matter who the linemen are. Up till recently its been pass protection problems. Thats another reason this team is about to turn it on.

Cable will have the running game going, JaPoppinFresh will have his best game and we will be 2-2 after Sunday

  32. Raider O Says:

This team takes one step forward, and three backward.
They are the dumbest team in America!

  33. Plunketthead Says:

Cable benched JR last year. Why would’nt he do it this year?

  34. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Cable never benched JR last year. JR missed the Carolina game due to injury and Walter started.

Of course that was the game where Delhomme was the 1st QB to win a game despite throwing 4 ints….

  35. Raider O Says:

    Jhill,

It was great. I always enjoy being here, but today’s morning session was too strong & too early.

  36. Raider O Says:

    It’s not all JR!!
There are 2 rookie WRs starting, and both have 6/7 catches for less than 180 yards.

  37. Plunketthead Says:

If I remeber correct there was a lot of discussion about that being a benching, not a injury

  38. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    JHill,

Good teams overcome bad calls and the like. Murphy dropped the ball because he is not an elite receiver. The defense melted in the 4th QTR because Marshall calls a game the same way Ryan does.

As for Denver: I figure that the Raiders should be able to beat…let alone compete…with a team that lost its QB, its head coach, its #1 receiver (marginalized) and a defense in supposed disarray. Not to mention the game was at home. They went out there and got their azz whupped up Atlanta style.

This game coming up against Houston is the biggest game for the next 3 years. Here’s why:

    1. They lose this game and its 7 yrs of double digit losses

    2. Russell will lose what little support he has in the lockerroom and coaching staff. His only support will be Al Davis

    3. Probably will mean a new QB in 2010. Most likely a free agent reject. That never works so there goes the future

    4. Toss in another weak head coach and new staff.

So, if this team full of “great playahs” is as good as they like to claim. It would be nice if they would play a complete game (no excuses) and win!

  39. Raider O Says:

Zach M is covered all the time due to our lack of plays from the WRs.

Our passing game Sucks, and cable gets most of the blame. He is the coach who is starting 2 rookie WRs, and is calling a very vanilla offense.
We can do much better. Call some wildcat plays, trick plays, reverses, etc…..

Look at the Dolphins last year.

    We have athletes!! Use them!!!!!

  40. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Raider O

The playcalling is abysmal. And that is on Tom Cable. Short throws, screens, slants, and running the football.

No team in the NFL throws more deep throws than Oakland.

Also, DHB should be on the bench. If Russell is having trust/timing issues…then for heavens sake, get JLH on the doggone field!

My point exactly! We are not a good TEAM.

  43. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I am really hoping that the Raiders can get this right against Houston.

A win puts everything back in order and hopefully gets the team’s attention to getting up for challenges in the following week.

A loss….I really hope they don’t go down that road.

I hope Cable was telling the truth about the team having a good practice this week….his job is depending on it!

  44. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    JHill,

I just want to see a competent football team.

there have been way too many Atlanta, New Orleans, Carolina, San Diego and now Denver games.

I can’t understand why this team regresses so much and can’t establish any consistency.

I think they are rushing these rookies. No reason why JLH should be on the bench behind two rookies. But the coaches claim to know what they are doing.

  45. Raider O Says:

    SnB,

I fear this will be another losing season. We need better coaching!!

  46. edward teach Says:

Sorry, but Garcia’s a tool. He talks about being able to contribute and to help the younger players and lead by example to show how a professional should prepare and lead. Then he obviously pouts and refuses to get involved after he “hurts his calf” in training camp, and pretty much quits by asking for his release because he realizes (which he should have all along) that he isn’t going to start. Combine that with borderline crappy play in the preseason and the pre-camp interview he did with the LA radio station, and the guy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. I said on this blog the day that interview came out that he should be cut immediately because it was obviously “all about Jeff” and not about the team, and with his comments today it’s pretty obvious that the only reason the guy came to Oakland was to start, and when he couldn’t he quit. Good riddance.

  47. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Clearly its not just the QB who has work ethic issues.

I am still at a loss of words as to how the team was so unprepared last week and STILL having sloppy azz practices.

Its a culture JHill. I think its Romper Room in there.

I hope they get some pride and do something.

  48. jhill Says:

I would bet that Murphy and DHB get more 1st and 2nd down snaps than JLH because of their run blocking. Obviously that makes no sense with Cable outguessing himself and calling PA instead of actually pounding the ball.

Any NFL really can beat any other NFL team on a given day. Nobody expected The Raiders to beat Houston last year, but they did. Nobody expected The Raiders to go to Denver and win last year after the way they got embarrassed by them opening game, but they did. Of course they can win, the question is will they win.

I don’t know if JR is going to work out or not, Jhill. Obviously, I hope he does. And maybe a veteran presence would help him, but a steadying presence is what that veteran would have to bring. Garcia is just too much drama, and in my opinion he makes the situation worse, not better.

Why can’t we get the ball into McFadden, Higgins, DHB’s hands in the open field. How can the defense consistently take all three away, especially when we have other weapons like Bush and Miller that have to be paid attention to as well. McFadden and DHB may not have proved themselves yet, but I would like to see the ball in their hand in the open field to find out.

  61. raiderkoolaid Says:

The run defense was OK, but not great against KC. They just gave up a lot of yards because the offense went three and out so many times. I am hoping that the pathetic way they played against Denver turns out to be the exception rather than the rule.

García is just like all the other fools letting lyers I mean myers bait him. 1-0 beechohet…

  63. Chris in NY Says:

McFadden needs to see more toss sweeps. He’s asked to run up the middle too much. I think he’s capable of running between the tackles. He’s really not a Reggie Bush type. But his speed on the sweeps and off-tackle plays is where he is special. Cable needs to realize this. I’m not saying run him outside all the time. More like 50/50. Right now it seems like he’s running 80/20 or even 90/10 between the tackles.

  64. Chris in NY Says:

I’m not anxious to see Garcia back here either. If a change has to be made why not see what Gradkowski or Frye can do. Both are far younger and have NFL starting experience. We need to hang with JaMarcus as the starter for now, but if it continues like this I’d rather see if either Gradkowski or Frye is a viable option to compete for the permanent starting QB job in Oakland.

Doesn’t matter who we have at QB. We call deep passing plays from our own end zone, and prevent defenses with time on the clock in one score games, we can have the best QB in the game and it won’t matter. JaMarcus Russell is not the reason this team is losing. Al Davis is.

    ——————-

Throwing the ball deep out of your own end zone is not a bad playcall at all. The D is often anticipating a run and stacking the line in hopes of a safety. A deep pass can get either a big gain or a big gain from pass interference and an INT off a deep pass can act like a punt.

The fact is there easily could have been pass interference called on that play. I’m not saying it was a slam-dunk PI call but I’d say at least 50% of the time that kind of contact with the WR falling down draws a flag. If DHB doesn’t fall down there I think he makes the catch (or at least has the ball bounce off his hands).

Totally agree with you about running the prevent D with significant time on the clock though. Hopefully these coaches will never forget that lesson after the disappointing SD loss.

Also agree that JaMarcus is not the sole reason for the Raiders’ struggles right now. He’s definitely at the top of the list, but it’s not that simple where you can just blame one guy. And, in terms of “struggles,” let’s not forget we should have beat SD and then we did beat KC. The Denver game undoubtedly was a disgrace. The D got picked apart and the O was totally inept. Hopefully it was an aberration. Sadly, my head tells me that’s not the case. But we’ll see.

    This 2006
Against Auburn no TDs 57.1 Pct
Against Florida 1 td 3 INT 58 PCT
    ===============================================

One last thing, I think that Auburn team had a top 5 defense and Florida was ranked number one late in the season. And of course, a completion percentage just under 60% against that kind of competition is not that bad. Of course you knew that. And you knew that Russells QB rating that year was third in the nation behind colt brennan and john Beck, neither of which played in a major. And you knew that too didn’t you “True Raider.” You can get up off the floor now.

Here you go you said it, Florida and Auburn defenses resembled NFL teams defenses and dude struggles, wow how smart are you?

They should be able to beat Houston. This is the game where Michael Bush and DMAC HAVE TO shine. I also hope to see a lot of JLH. I think Cable was too quick to toss him to the side.

Defense has to buck up and play well. Can’t let a QB like Schaub sit back and watch the field. They will be prepared and expect plenty of balls over the middle to Daniels (TE) and their slot receivers. Marshall will HAVE to make adjustments to the game plan.

Hate to disagree so early in the morning, ok it’s not that early. JLH and DHB play 2 different positions. DHB is an outside wr where as JLH primarily plays in the slot, although he played all over last year. I don’t know exactly why JLH has fallen out of favor so to speak, he definitely hasn’t been on the field much at all this season. He was the leading wr for the Raiders last year and now he doesn’t even have a catch.

Now that I think about it more KK may be on to something regarding DHB. JLH is worthy of being the #2 wr regardless of preference of position, it’s not like JLH can ONLY play in the slot. Maybe they should give DHB a shot in the slot. Catch a slant over the middle and see how fast he can really run.

On a funny side note, has anyone noticed JLH’s high flat top/fade? He looks like Kid from KidnPlay. I imagine that’s the look he’s going for after seeing him do the “Carlton” last year.

  129. RaiderDogg Says:

I wish Michael Crabtree would pull his head out of his a$$ and figure it out. As much as I can’t stand the 9ers, I would like to see this kid play. All signs are pointing to him holding out until next year’s draft. He will probably get drafted by the Patriots, they have something like 40 picks in next year’s draft. If he thought that Singletary made him cry, Bellichik will have Crabtree quivering in the corner…

  130. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    RaiderDogg,

Its a free market. If Crabtree thinks he’s worth more money…he is totally free to pursue any course of action he sees fit. Obviously, he must think someone will pay him the dollars in next year’s draft. And who knows…he could be right. There are a lot of teams with no wide receivers that could use a good talent…Titans, Jets, Browns, Dolphins, Chiefs and others….

If he’s wrong…he costs himself money. I don’t think its that big a deal. Crabtree is doing what he feels is his best interest. Free market economics at work

And by the way, the Niners are also doing what they feel is in their best interest by not paying him.

I wish they would get rid of the draft and let the players sign with whomever is willing to pay them. Then you would see the free market at work.

Of course the Raiders would see the short-end of the stick given they have only developed 3 1st or 2nd rd picks since 1999. (Asomugha, Howard, Janikowski)

  134. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    JHill,

Why hasn’t Garcia been picked up by another team yet? Everyone raves about how talented this guy is, yet his only offer was to be the emergency QB in Philly for two weeks.

He (Garcia) is pathetic and everyone has caught on to his game. You gain NOTHING by playing him. He can’t win games, (Tampa dumped him and Gruden spent 2 yrs trying to replace him!)

Again, Raider fans are delusional. They love the idea of trying to play old veteran rejects like Garcia, McCown, Culpepper, Brooks, Collins, Hollas, George, Evans, Wilson, Schroeder….and the same Raider fan learned nothing from the short-term joy…long-term destruction that comes from playing old vets at the end (Hostetler/Gannon)

Again, two or three years of average play…then retirement!

HEAR ME RAIDER FAN! YOU HAVE TO DEVELOP A YOUNG QB TO WIN IN THE NFL!

  135. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    RaiderDogg,

Actually, the whole thing could be remedied by eliminating the draft!

I don’t blame the guy one bit, any kind of leverage on his part needs to be taken. I don’t blame the 9ers either, they should stand pat. This could all be remedied with a Rookie Salary Cap of some kind. I am so tired of these guys that have never played a down in the NFL making far too much money, while some proven vets are tossed aside.

For some reason the Patriots and the Bears came to mind when I thought about who would draft Crabtree next year.

  137. RaiderDogg Says:

Just a plain old rookie free agent pool? That would certainly favor all of the good teams. The Raiders would have a hard time winning favor with many rookies, the way things have been around here for the last 6+ years. They would have to seriously over pay rookies, like they do free agents now.

No other team would be the lead story in sports on some NO NEWS story from a 4th string QB who was just cut, lol!

This stuff is funny! The Raiders, good are bad, are being talked about by everyone! Too funny!

ONLY the receprient’s of bad press state “no such thing as bad press”.

Oh….BTW..that’s usually reserved for celebs..who need their name in the limelight so they’re ‘remembered’..or “considered for the next role’..it’s NEVER used for teams that are the laughingstock of the country.. No, not just the NFL, the country.

Oh, and another tidbit for you, babbling boob..to show you how stupid your comment is. EACH AND EVERY TIME a Gannon comment surfaces? Where Garcia echoes it? Where Tim Brown confirms it? Where the Halls, Sapps, Simms, etc state it’s exactly that bad?
That “press” is noted by agents and players alike..adding to the mountain of negative press that goes along with the Raiders organization.

Let me help you figure out what it means, because I’m know you’re confused. (no, I know..in denial, not confused)

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME A TOP PLAYER WANTED TO COME TO THE RAIDERS?

    Yeah, I’m stumped as well.

Ok..try this. When was the last time a top player signed with the Raiders without making it clear he was not happy with the deal?

    See? lol..

That “bad press” that you stated was no biggee is why the Raiders are where their at.

Not necessarily. If you are a rookie QB like Sanchez or Stafford this year. Are you going to go to a team like the Giants or Patriots? Probably not, because you won’t have a chance to play for years.

Of course, a team like the Raiders would be disadvantaged for an entirely different reason. The Raiders inability to develop players would any top tier talent in a rookie free agent pool. Of course, for the Raiders that too would be a blessing, since the only players that seem to get any traction here are the later round picks.

Of course, the Raiders would still have been the only team to overpay for DHB!

Why has this happened, and why can’t the team find its way out of the darkness? We all know the answer — it’s not the coaches or the players. The man at the top, who was once one of the greatest minds in football, has become a delusional Norma Desmond (go watch Sunset Boulevard, if you don’t get the reference), dreaming of past glory and unable to recognize the real world. Deluded by an ego that’s out of controd, he refuses to release the iron grip that continues to throttle the life out of this team. The coaches can’t use the best players, or call the plays they know they should, and the players quickly realize that there’s no hope and give up.

Sooner or later, the league or the other owners of this team will grow a pair and find a way to send in the men in white coats. Maybe they just need to convince Ms. Desmond, I mean Mr. Davis, that they’re coming to film his close-up, not to haul him away.

Think about it. A guy like Aaron Curry or BJ Raji. Teams that believe in building inside out…(usually the successfull teams) would probably be in a bidding war for guys like that.

Meanwhile, these flashy skill position players might only have a couple of “needy” teams or philosophical (read Raiders) teams bidding for them.

No. Because the salary cap is what keeps the playing field level. The salary cap is based on the T.V contract. Not the income derived from other sources.

Players will have to weigh a couple of factors before signing with a team:

    1. Salary offer from team (salary cap limited)
    2. Ability to get on the field and start because everything else is derived from this
    3. Team ability to develop player’s skills (coaching) (stability)
    4. Income derived from outside activities (big mkt influenced)
    5. Quality of life…Miami vs. Kansas City

Raiders wouldn’t have to pay over the top for an unproven player. They do that now. How much did DHB, Mitchell, DMAC, Russell, Huff get paid? Talk about overpaying for a bunch of stiffs……At least without a draft, the Raiders could gauge how much real interest there was in a guy like DHB or Mike Mitchell, instead of just making a wild azz guess.

Don’t forget. Players want to play. Most players would rather start for the Raiders, then ride the bench for the Patriots…all things being equal. Of course, the Raider front office chaos would force them to pay a premium. And it should! There should be a penalty for the incompetence that eminates from Al Davis and his front office!

Still, delusional despots stay in power only because those who could do something to stop it are content to be enablers of the status quo. The league, the coaches, the other minority owners — even the fans who continue to pay to see this [expletive deleted] week after week, year after year — they’re all just enablers. But the salary cap keeps the spending equal among the teams.

Also, players want to play 1st and foremost. No top tier QB is going to Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Baltimore, Indy, New England, Jets and quite a few others.

Same for every position. If you are a top tier Center. Would you go play for the Jets with Nick Mangold? No, you will go to the Raiders. Plus, the Jets (big market) are not going to offer a top Center as much as the Raiders SHOULD.

Granted, if Miami and Oakland were bidding on the same QB next yr. The Raiders will have to offer a premium to compensate for:

    1. Inferior coaching and support environment
    2. History of high pick busts (19 of 22 busts)
    3. Quality of life

But, the Raiders would get a top tier QB talent before Indy or New England. Why? A top tier QB still wants to play and is not going to wait 5 yrs before Peyton MIGHT retire.

Now Minnesota might be interesting. Do you wait a year or two for Favre to retire and go to a stable situation….or go the circus in Oakland, play right away and have an 87% chance of being a bust

Again, how much time was Kiffin spending working with Russell during those formative years? Where is DeFillipo (his QB coach?_

Russell and this team learned a lot of bad habits. That’s why I HOPE Davis let Cable remake the lockerroom.

That’s why Singletary is so successfull. He owns the lockerroom and he owns the game day. No interference. He also pushes players in the offseason. Remember his “HIll”

Russell comes in out of shape. Is that going to fly in San Fran?

Russell holds a passing camp. Who shows up? Murphy and Watkins. Murphy didn’t sign his contract either. Look who leads the doggone team in receptions.

The whole culture of expectations in Oakland is poisoned. That’s why players don’t reach their full potential.

    Where’s our “Hill”
    =============================
    Exactly right.
Singletary’s presence commands attention. Cable is a teddy bear, who’s so worried about not hurting anyone’s feelings. There are ZERO SUCCESSFUL HEAD COACHES who didn’t do as you stated, presented their own personal “hill”.

I remember when Singletary sent Vernon Davis to the locker room, first game, barking at him.
Whole country took note. Rest of team definitely took note. And now Vernon is stating “Singletary is the best thing that ever happened to me.”

What’s sad for the Raider fans is Al thinks of himself as a Singletary.. I really believe that.
And thats what he wants..players to fear him, respect him, to jump when he says jump..because, after all, according to Al, Al’s the HC.

  177. jhill Says:

But you said it..players all things equal, will pick NE over KC. The warmth of Miami over freezing in Buffalo..the deep pockets of Dallas compared to Al having to borrow money.

    No parity.

The small markets couldn’t compete. Team values would plummet. Players would buy out contracts just to go elsewhere.

Ripple effect would devastate the league, IMO.

    ——————————————————

But how would things truely be equal?

I’ll be the first to admit I am no economist or capologist, but it just seems like NE would have to be able to offer a better contract than KC.. The next athlete to turn down the most $ will be the first.

Players buying out their contracts? What about the players NE would have to cut or trade to get a player it might want?

I think the salary cap would have to play into this somehow, and maybe guaranteed contracts.

I think the NBA has it right as far as the rookies go. Might as well model that.

  178. jhill Says:

The biggest difference between Singletary and Cable is he is smart enough to know he should not be calling the plays.

I think Cable breaking Hanson’s jaw had it all set up for him, right or wrong. You could see it in that Charger game. I mean, they were knocking fools out., But now? Seems like a whole new squad!

Maybe he should steal on JRuss??!?!?

  181. Richochet Says:

    SnB:
Yes, it keeps it equal, but is it fair that the SB champ, because they’re the champ, and a solid team, is able to snatch the top RB in the draft, ahead of say..Detroit?
So now the player knows theirs a bidding war. Detroit is small market, little bucks, and are easily outbid.
Raiders would also be outbid in short order because they had to pay double for someone because of the above mentioned intangibles of playing for Al.
    Where does it end?
    the strong get stronger.

Remember how all this came into fruition?

Was Eddie D, pre-cap days, who did just what you stated. Took excellent care of the players, coaches, and staff. Flew the whole team, plus families, in a private jet to Hawaii, each year after the season was over. Lavished boats, cars, jewelry, as appreciation. Other players took pay cuts to come to the Niners, and gladly so.
That’s when the other owners cried foul, because they couldn’t keep up with Eddie’s deep pockets, and rules went into place.

As far as top tier players wanting to start in Oakland, instead of sitting in NE?
    Hmm..not so sure about that.
Elway had a chance to start with the Colts. He knew he was going to get KILLED behind that horrible O line, and wanted none of it.
Players seem to now be looking long term, both in probably longevity, but also being on a winner, which brings salary, and endorsements.
Yep, everyone would clammor to go to the top 10 teams, and do everything possible to stay away from the bottom 10, unless they got monstrous bucks.
Which, as we both know, would dry up soon.
    Parity.
NFL learned from MLB..watched Steinbrenner buy a team, year after year..and watched other franchises die off, move, and be basically a joke.
NFL is trying to avoid that.

    =============================
    Exactly right.
NFL is so damn old school, and slow to adjust, it’s annoying.
Now..NOW..after it’s only so obvious, they’re discussing rookie salary cap. Should have been the first discussion ever made. It’s so backasswards that these unproven draft picks are immediately making more money than THE #1 RB THE PREVIOUS YEAR..or the #1 WR..in many cases more than the #1 qb.

Equal is, IMO, drafted players GO WHERE THEIR DRAFTED OR GO TO CANADA and play..adios. Team picks you, that’s where you play.
Salary cap for rookies. By position or not, just a cap, so guys have to EARN their money. (honestly, can anyone believe JR wouldn’t have shown up in TOP SHAPE if he knew his production decided his bank account?)

The above sets the tone so teams aren’t bankrupt because they were actually unfortunate enough to OWN the first pick. (read where some teams don’t want it..because they know the money they’ll have to pay out on someone unproven, which might screw them for the next 5 years)

    Now you have equal parity.
    Players perform, or no pay.
Teams reward performance, and get rid of wasted picks ( man, how many teams have big bucks on the bench? Alex Smith? Guaranteed 24 mil..Bey..22 mil..Russell..32 mil.. without those guarantees most of the above would know thier job is either terminated, or on the line, right?

Remember a few years back when Tiki Barber was having the same problem with fumbles? He ended up carrying a football with him at all times in his everyday life. Whenever someone saw him, they would try to knock the ball out of his hands and cause him to fumble. They even attached a teather line to the end of it and folks would yank on the teather, trying to yank it out of his grasp. It seemed to work, whoever’s idea it was.

I would like to think that the Raiders would be doing something similar, but I am not holding out any hope.

I hear what you are saying. Of course, a Super Bowl champion outbidding for the top RB assumes that its existing RB is on the outs.

But your point is well taken.

I think that the pressure on other teams to clean up their intangibles will lead to much better “long-term” decision making.

The fact that there are a limited number of starting jobs will keep the talent available to all but the most incompetent (read Raiders) teams.

Also, Pittsburgh is a small market team…as is Green Bay and Minnesota. they are just run really really well….while Detroit is a large market team 5 or 6 million people in their metro area and a strong regional following.

This is a big reason we cannot dig ourselves out of the hole. Same with Detroit. Too many super high paid misfires.

The worse team should be able to name their order in the draft, especially if it costs high dollars for #1 pic.

I think we will start seeing teams go under in the near future unless saleries are redone and brought back to earth. Of course if we lost 6 teams we would be treated to some much better football.

Al would get good players by default!

  203. jhill Says:

Despite Al, Snyder, and Jones …

I still can’t get past the dudes with the headsets on. I think it just gives them a pass to say they coach for those type of owners. Prime example is Gruden. Gruden won his way, and no one can dispute that. So what Al was “in his ear”. Gruden says he dealt with it by listening to the owner and them diagraming why that wouldn’t work, and then Al would be fine with it.

Cable, Turner, Callahan, Ryan, and these other guys who are puppets by character are more of a problem than Davis. I mean, if Cable calls go with the run 70% of the time, and we win, what is Al going to do, fire him? I’d like to see that happen. CABLE is the one who needs to let his nutz hang and just getg after it.

  204. Plunketthead Says:

Was Gruden able to do what he wanted right away?
Or was he able to slowly work over Al to get what he wanted?
Singletary is gonna go places. It was obvious when he took over. And I agree he would not be able to work with Al.

But Cable seems to be the right fit and hopefully he will get more and more of what he wants from Al. That may be our best hope for the future.

  205. jhill Says:

What Singletary did to Davis was no different than what Shell did to Porter.

Cable knocked the shyt outta Davis’ hand picked GM Hanson and Davis didn’t undermine the coach by letting the guy back in.

Gruden brought in Rich Gannon and the dink and dunk offense pretty much right from the beginning.

Cable ??? Well, we will see, but he simply looks like what he is – A guy with little experience at what he’s being asked to do.

You know, Garcia was right, and we can see it. It’s like Cable has put all his chips on Jamarcus Russell. When in fact the direction of the team should be Bush/McFadden/Fargas and the defense, with the 3rd youngest QB in the league and 2 rookie WRs coming along for the ride. I guess that would just be too easy!

  206. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Kell, funny how sarcasm flies right over his head, isn’t it? Just imagine what this guy’s like in real life. Then he tries to calm down and pass it off as normal, but everyone is already a little freaked out. His face is red. I guarantee that’s how he is in real life. I’d bet anything.

If your asking if JRuss is really Al’s guy, then that again is stating the obvious.

But Cable has the headset on, plain and simple. He’s obviously trying to kiss Al’s ass with the playcalling, and that’s a shame. Al is not telling him what plays to call. Al would be satisfied with 2 or 3 vertical shots per game and a lot of Bo and Marcus, I mean DMac and Bush. If Cable called the game right, you would see DHB, Murphy, Miller, and Watkins with more single coverage. Pass when they expect run, create match up problems with DMac and Bush.

JHill, it’s obvious you’re prepared to blame Cable for how bad this team is. Since 2003, the Oakland Raiders are the worst team in the NFL overall. Cable was hired in 2007 as an offensive line coach. He was made head coach, with virtually no NFL coordinator experience, early in the ‘08 season. So let’s say Cable is at fault? Who was at fault before him for how bad we were? And who as at fault before that guy? And who was at fault before him? Get real. Al Davis doesn’t have to call the plays. The coaches know when they’re hired here that Al wants to stretch the field. Sure, Cable can do what he wants. You can go rob an old lady, too. But there’ll be consequences, it both instances. Snap out of your denial, JHill.

  213. jhill Says:

    LOL, ok MR.

So like you said, Cable can call his own play just like Kiffin did, Callahan, and Gruden did.

OR he can follow the what Turner and Shell did.

Consequences? If Cable runs Bush and McFadden just like he did in the SD game for 30 carries a game instead of calling vertical bombs out of the end zone, AL is going to do what?
