Giants are what Raiders hope to be
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at 4:17 pm in Oakland Raiders.
News and notes following the Raiders’ pracitce session Wednesday and press briefing with coach Tom Cable:
– The New York Giants are what the Raiders want to be when they grow up.
Although the Giants’ don’t play nearly as much man-to-man coverage in their secondary, their defense is built on a front four that rotates seven players, keeping them fresh, and doesn’t spend a lot of time dialing up exotic blitzes when natural pressure will do just fine.
Their offense has a heavy emphasis on play-action, is utilizing young receivers just coming into their own and has a no-frills running game with multiple running backs.
“You really have to respect what they’ve done there and what they have going,” Raiders coach Tom Cable said. “I think everybody in football would like to get those two units to be similar to their style.”
It’s no secret that Raiders’ owner Al Davis was interested in offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride in part because he was able to utilize three backs successfully last season.
The Giants developed a No. 1 overall draft pick, Eli Manning (acquired by trade from San Diego), into a Super Bowl championship quarterback now considered among the elite at his position.
– Chaz Schilens still has pain in his left foot when he plants and cuts, did not practice and is listed as doubtful. He almost certainly will not face the Giants. Left guard Robert Gallery has already been declared out, as wide receiver Nick Miller (shin) and right tackle Cornell Green (calf).
Fullback Oren O’Neal is day-to-day with an ankle sprain, Zach Miller day-to-day with a concussion (he wasn’t scheduled to practice Wednesday but will have to be cleared medically to play) and Tyvon Branch was limited with a hip injury.
Darren McFadden underwent what Cable called successful surgery to “clean out” a knee, although the coach still isn’t sure whether it was the right or left knee.
– As expected, the Raiders will start Erik Pears at right tackle, Chris Morris at left guard and Samson Satele at center to go along with right guard Cooper Carlisle and left tackle Mario Henderson. Cable went back to his offensive line coach roots with some personal instruction, which should continue throughout the week.
“I want to help because the changes that are going on I think needs another set of eyes in there and certainly that’s one place I can help, for sure,” Cable said.
Cable was blunt in his assessment of the group’s performance, particularly against Houston.
“I’m not good with it at all, at this point. We don’t have an identity, we have to get that back, we have to learn how to strain, to do those kinds of things,” Cable said. “The protection has really been pretty good the first three games, only two sacks last game but too many hits on the quarterback, there were 10, plus the two sacks.”
Henderson is at a loss to explain what happened.
“We expected more out of our running game but things haven’t been working out there. The good thing is we have a chance to get on track,” Henderson said. “We need to do it early. People might make excuses because we have different linemen. But there aren’t no excuses. No matter who you put up, you get out there and you’re taught to do this. That’s what we all need to do and be responsible.”
– Taking positive thinking to the limit, Henderson said, “It’s not the best momentum but it’s still momentum” regarding the reversal of fortunes since Week 1.
– Cable confirmed the Raiders tried out Langston Walker Tuesday, the former Raider who signed with the Bills during free agency in 2007. The Raiders made no attempt to bring Walker back in part because they thought he wasn’t compatible with a zone blocking system.
“He’s working on what he needs to do in terms of conditioning and all that, so we’ll just see down the road,” Cable said.
– Cable said the starting running back between Justin Fargas and Michael Bush won’t be determined until they put in the offense and the initial series of plays and that it doesn’t matter, anyway.
“Yeah, I think it’s really feel, but they both have to get involved,” Cable said. “You’ve got to do it with two runners.”
– Gary Russell signed Tuesday with McFadden out from two to four weeks, can expect play on special teams and as a third running back.
Russell gained 155 yards on 28 carries, averaging 5.5 yards per carry during the preseason after arriving from Pittsburgh, where he scored the first touchodwn in last year’s Super Bowl against the Arizona Cardinals.
“I pretty much already knew it was a numbers game,” Russell said. “I thanked them for the opportunity to showcase my talent.”
– Cable said Jonathan Holland, sufficiently recovered from an elbow dislocation, would resume kickoff return duties and that Johnnie Lee Higgins would return punts against the Giants.
– Thomas Howard wasn’t bragging about the sack of Matt Schaub which wound up on the stat sheet against Houston.
“My sack was more of a scumbag sack,” Howard said. “I was reaching for him but he ran out of bounds. I think I touched him _ barely. I still want it though. At the end of the year, it’s a sack.”
– Howard said dealing with 270-pound running back Brandon Jacobs, who he considers a close friend and someone he visits with in the offseason, as a great challenge.
Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly is of the belief Jacobs has some bird-like qualities.
“You don’t get to see 270-pound backs running that fast, but I mean he’s human so if you hit him around his beak a couple of times, he’ll slow down,’’ Kelly said.
“He is a load, but like (Tommy) says, you rap him around the beak a time or two and he’ll fold up.”
– Howard says he fully expects Manning to play, but Manning did not practice Wednesday and it’s conceivable they’ll rest him against the Raiders.
If Manning can’t play, the quarterback will be former No. 1 overall pick David Carr, who has the kind of dream supporting cast the Raiders would love to put around Russell.
“Look at the production they’re getting out of the receivers and the tight end in the passing game,” Cable said. “It’s a system, the run game ,they do what they do. I think whoever is playing, you still have the other 10 pieces around you.”
– Russell is scheduled to speak to the media Thursday.

Raiders have to step up this week and show everyone Giants are not a real 4-0 team!! They’ve beaten Chiefs, Bucs, and Skins, with a decent win over a decent cowboys team. Raiders could have a winning record against that competition. Sounds like Raiders might go back to run, and cable is back where he belongs, coaching the O-line!!

I smell a massacre. When was the last time you have seen Tommy Kelly blast ANY running back let alone someone like Brandon Jacobs. He should keep his mouth shut and stay in his lane.

Krappy is in classic Krappy form today! The old dog is whining about the old days and cut and pasting worthless stats that no one is going to read.
If there is a stronger argument for why ol Krappy should be taken directly to the old folks home and chained to his bed pan, I’d like to hear it.
I’m guessing he hasn’t had his afternoon oatmeal feeding, which would explain why his feathers are getting so ruffled. I mean seriously – is anyone grumpier than this old goat besides Adolf Hitler?
Anyway, hopefully his latest pant crapping will calm him down just a tad. We can only pray he’ll get hosed down and tucked in before he jams that old dome in the microwave again.

– The New York Giants are what the Raiders want to be when they grow up.
===================================================
The New York Giants are what the Raiders want to be when they grow up. Huh. The New York Giants are one of the most physical franchises if not THE single most physical franchise in the history of the entire league. They had Tunnell, Huff, Robustelli, Taylor, Carson, George Martin. How about Leonard Marshall busting Joe Montana in HALF, ending his Whiner career? They stood toe to toe 2 years ago with an undefeated New England team and beat their ass. Who on our team is a physical player??? Honestly, other than Gallery and Nnam, I can’t think of ONE. And Nnam is a freaking corner for crissakes.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
I honestly think playing the Giants is the best thing for this young, struggling team.
If you get blown off the field against the mediocre Texans, sometimes playing one of the best teams with no pressure on you can be a relief. They are expected to get crushed, any type of a competitive down the last few minutes game would be a huge confidence boost.
I think they are going to shock everyone and play a tight game, and maybe win this weekend.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Another thing Oakglenn. Singeltary and V. Davis got off to a rocky start, too. That seemed to have worked itself out. I think you’re overlooking the Singletary factor. He’s one of the best coaches in the NFL. As painful as it is to admit, the 49ers have finally turned the corner. They’re doing everything right over there.

The Raiders and the Steelers were the most physical teams in the league as recent as 8 years ago. You don’t even have to go back to the ’70s. The Steelers still are. Of course, the Steelers aren’t ran by an 80 year old nut job, either.

Not even close.
An Oakland Raiders coach’s job is to put lipstick on a pig. That’s what Cable does, period. You do what Al Davis tells you to do, you spin the disastrous results, and you take accountability. It’s not a bad gig for an offensive line coach who would never get hired as a head coach elsewhere in the league. But no real coach will ever put up with it. Young coaches looking to become respectable coaches someday will just try to circumvent the system, the way Kiffin and Gruden did.

Is there a curse on the city of Oakland or what?
Raiders suck!
Warriors suck!
A’s suck!
We suck again!
I forget the year but I think it was the year after Jeter threw out Giambi at home, we had home field and lost to Minnesota in game five I was there. Mark Ellis had to give us some false hope with a late inning homer, but in the end, we lost again.
Why must we suck for so long, only to get so close and suck again?????
I’m losing it here! My Tim Brown jersey has seen better days and I can’t for the life of me wear another players jersey…

No, it’s not about relationships at all. It’s about people. People that are pains in the ass to start, are normally pains in the ass in the end. It is certainly true in relationships and I used that to diagram what I was saying. Can’t really say Richard Seymour has been anything other than advertised: he has shown up for us and played well for us. One of the few that has.

October 7th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Sure, I thought the Raiders could be competitive this year. I was optimistic, as always in July. I thought they would lean on those talented RB’s and strike with the pass when necessary.
My only fear was that Al Davis would preempt the sane and rational, and instead pursue his fantasy’s of yesteryear.
Which he’s indeed done. With the same predictable results as 2006′
If he had ANY class, he’d retire.

October 7th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I found it pretty weird Mcfadden was able to break some tackles and not go down easily in the first half against the chargers. Usually, hes tackles for losses were bad plays by the o-line but what I hated was the shoe string tackle near the end and since then, he has gone down on very little contact except a little broken tackle for a TD vs the chiefs (watching most of that game, I was thinking the guy would stop him short). I hope he can do better.
Also, Russell sort of stepped of this week playing like a regular nfl QB missing 2 passes like cable said but the receivers dropped a lot and I think the catch that was ruled out of bounds messed up murphy mentally because he came back the next drive with 3 drops.

What has your loyalty to a piece of silver and black cloth brought you? When it’s all said and done is you being a fan or a team that sucks balls going to matter? If they’re willing to do the right things and regain a minimal level of self respect then there might be a chance of reconciliation in the future. To all you guys who can’t wait for Al to pass away:
Will there really be anything interesting about being a Raider fan at that point?
Will there really be anything interesting, unique or cool about the Raiders, any more so than any other NFL team?
The answer is HELL NO.
Obviously, to some of you, the only reason to root for this team is the wins.
Let me tell you something; There is only one reason the Raiders are different, and unique, and cool, and “us-against-the-world” and that reason is Al Davis.
For all his greatness, for all his faults (and he has many), he is the single ingredient that makes our team different. And to me, as a fan, that is cool.
We’ve won with Al and we’ve lost with Davis. But, once he’s gone, all that uniqueness goes away. We become just another NFL franchise, win or lose.
Is that really that interesting to any of you? If it is, then damn. . . .go root for any of the other 31 teams that may be having success right now.
I for one choose to be part of the NATION that says “screw the rest of you”.

I think (hope) this will be the game where Jamarcus Russell gets the injury that will end his already miserable career. All busts inevitability get hurt around thier second crappy season and never see the field again. ex. ryan leaf, alex smith. Either that or I wanna see jamarcus finish under 40 percent completion precentage for the year and still hear morons blame it on the refs, wrs, o line, rbs, defense, etc.

Except Bret Favre’s!

Hey guys,
I’ve got a question. When did this Al Davis won’t let his D.C.’s blitz b.s. begin? Within the last six years maybe? Coincidence. I think this defense has the potential to be special. But the lack of even an occasional blitz is driving me crazy. You can’t leave your corners hanging out in man like that. And the Raiders have two good cover corners. I always remember the Raiders playing a physical, attacking style of defense. I thought Al’s often mocked quote was “the other teams quarterback must go down, and he must go down hard!”

You have got got be kidding me Richocet. There is no denying the fact that the Raiders are held to a different standard than every other team by NFL officials.Sure, every team gets a bad call now and then. Nobody ever got screwed worse than Seattle in the superbowl against Pittsburgh. It was so bad I almost thought the fix was in. If that had been the raiders my wife would have had to have me sedated. But it is just a fact of life as a Raider fan. Every week they have two opponents, the other team and the refs. I’m not whining. I’m not saying that’s the only reason they lose. It doesn’t matter if they’re a good team winning three straight division championships and being one tuck rule away from playing in three straight conference championships. A team full of veteran hall of fame caliber leaders like Rod Woodson, Gannon, Rice and Brown. Or a young struggling team devoid of leadership on a six year skid.Only one thing is constant, the Raiders will lead the league in penalties and controversial calls. It’s been that way for forty years.

Vegas – Pass the Kool Aid, I’ll stand with you and watch the game from a bar anytime.
Buckeye – I agree – Did Al change? Did Madden Blitz a lot? As far back as I can remember Al hates the blitz.. but we DID used to blitz…
You can do it when your safety and corners are good enough. I’d like to think we were getting close.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
You’re right Kell. They were playing a base 3-4. But on passing downs, they slid Long In to DT.And brought Jones in as a pass rush specialist. Maybe they could run some 3-4 packages now. Ellis and Seymour offer some versatility. Not sure we have the linebackers for it. Or a true nose tackle. The 3-4 is back in vogue. All the rage around the league. Whoda thunk it. The senile old man was years ahead of his time.

October 7th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Richochet, why are you pretending to be tough on the internet? Do you honestly think you’re intimidating anyone?
October 7th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Kell… I’ll never forget the Super Bowl against the Vikings. Minnesota had the baddest, meanest front four in the business and the Raider o-line made them look like schoolboys.
Now we’re the ones looking like schoolboys. Gotta get that fixed.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Our o-line couldn’t block the Washington State Cougars right now. That doesn’t exactly help the QB’s timing with his receivers, either.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
When the Raiders were successful last year they had Russel throwing to Chaz S, Miller and J.L.H for the last few games last year.
I think that the bad passing game is as much the receivers fault as Russels. If you don’t have any confidence and are hesitant throwing to your receivers (they run wrong routes, timing is off, you don’t know where they’ll be when) obviously you’ll hesitate…and if they’re on a wrong route you’ll look like you’re throwing into left field.
Now…needless to say he had some HORRIBLE throws also, but I think that the receivers are as much to blame as the QB at this point. I don’t get why they don’t put ANY experience in there. It’s obvious that they’re not in sync….with time they’ll develop, but we don’t need to look bad while they’re doing it!

October 7th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
The second thing I noticed from that MNF game was the play of Stacey Toran. After Jackson, he was the second most impressive player on the field that night. He absolutely laid a receiver out. I don’t know how the dude held onto the ball. He hit a back in short yardage so hard Gifford and Dierdorf were laughing and replayed it like three time to here the pads crack. He timed his blitzes so well, he was on the qb at the snap of the ball. When I watched Toran I thought of one thing. The Mike Mitchell youtube highlights.Identical. Now he needs to translate that onto an NFL field. We’ve already seen him splatter Darren sproles on a kickoff return. We need his 220 lb ass in the box, stuffing the run, blitzing the QB and intimidating receivers old school Raider style.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Does anyone else think they should just put in the players who get the best stats, not who have the most status by draft pick or the most $$$ paycheck?
Bush would be in for sure. Heck, we’d probably be playing the 2nd tight end (forgot his name who we drafted this year and looked DAMNED GOOD in pre-season). We wouldn’t have DHB in there now for sure.
Funny quote I saw from a person when asked if he thought Crabtree would end up the year with more catches than DHB “Well, with Crabtree holding out 4 games into the season he’s still only 2 catches behind DHB”.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Raiderzmaverick,
Branden Meyers is the rookie TE, out of Iowa. He was supposed to be drafted for his blocking ability. But you’re right he looked excellent in the preseason. caught everything thrown his way. You’d think they could use that right about now. somebody actually catching the ball. I know tony stewart is valued for his ST play. But I’d like to see more of Meyers as well.
October 7th, 2009 at 8:10 pm
Free JLH. Yes, he celebrates too early on his way to the end zone, but sweet Jesus he actually gets there–and mostly on his own–occasionally.
October 7th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Watching the Crabtree presser on NFLN. Does OZZY know samurai Mike stole his six inch crucifix necklace. Singletary’s got the niners ballin though.
October 7th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
I figure put some guys out that can catch the ball. JLH did well last year and turned short passes into long gains. Branden Meyers made some amazing catches in the pre-season (and Russel seems to throw MUCH better over the middle than to the sidelines). Even the passes to Wide Receivers are normally caught deep middle rather than sideline throws. So 2 tight ends running out would make sense. And that would also open more lanes if they’re packing 8 men in the box for Bush to run through.
October 7th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
The only thing I can figure is management is trying to be RIGHT more than trying to WIN. They have to prove how wrong all the criticism for drafting DHB was….and so, it’s more important to prove them wrong than to put in someone else and concede that DHB will take more development
October 7th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Where the hell did everybody go?Well, it’s almost 11:30 here, and I have to work tomorrow. I’m out. This has been fun.
October 7th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Is it too much to ask that when the quarterback does have time and spots an open receiver that he throw an accurate pass to them, and is it too much to ask that when a receiver does get open and then has an accurate pass thrown to him that he catch it? If we could have managed to have done even that much we would have been much more competitive.

October 7th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
Giants also stuck with Eli well into his 4th season while he struggled, never made it to the playoffs his first 3 years and had fans calling for him to be benched in that 4th season. Late in that 4th season, the light went on. Eli improved dramatically and the Giants went on to stun the 18-0 Pats in the Super Bowl and Eli was the clearly the team’s playoff MVP.
No, Eli never struggled as much as JaMarcus has this season. He also didn’t play as well as JaMarcus did in the second half of last season. Eli also never played with two rookie WRs. He never had 2 head coaches and 3 playcallers in his first 2 seasons. He also played all 4 years in college and didn’t come out after his junior year with limited starting experience.
Not saying you wait forever on JaMarcus, but you’ve got to give him this season to see if he catches on. If he doesn’t, make it a true QB competition going into next season with a viable alternative.

That they don’t, and that nothing is being done to fix it is a waste of my precious time…
And no, I don’t care that you want to beat me up. Actually, that makes me laugh.
——————————–
In other words, you’re not a Raider fan? Why not just say that? Why all that pathetic drivel trying to justify why you have different hats in your drawer?
No, dude, no one gives a ratsass that you stayed or left. You aren’t a fan. You’re bandwagon. Everyone, even YOU know bandwagon fans are the fake fans..those who, FOR SOME ODD REASON own a hat of the last 5 SB winners. Means you’re a joke as a fan.
Hey, you know it, I know it. Everyone knows it. No biggee.
On the other hand, they’re are the diehards.
Those that stick with a team. Through the good. Through the bad. See..they, unlike you, aren’t bandwagon.
Oh, sure, you’ll cheer on whatever teams hat you have on that day..you’ll even do as you THINK YOU SHOULD DO, which is jump up and celebrate a td..as if you supported them all along. You’ll high five. You’ll yell out the window.
But it’s fake.
What you’ll NEVER feel is the feeling a fan gets when their team does come back. You have no idea what I’m talking about, do you? Hell no.
You have NO IDEA what passion for you team means. You can’t even comprehend what I’m talking about. Because you’re bandwagon. you’re a fakeass fan who only wants to watch if he’s cheering on a winner, or a team that has a really good chance of winning..your fake ass will pretend you’re all excited..but it’s fake. It’s made up.
Oh..and here’s EXACTLY WHY YOU’RE A FAKEASS FAN..you stated “when the team starts winning, no one will care that you were there when they were losing”..
WTF??? “no one will care”?? LMAO..you dumbass waste of space..WE AREN’T FANS BECAUSE WE WANT SOMEONE ELSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE US AS FANS..you moron.
We support our teams FOR US..not anyone else.
You’re textbook example if living vicariously through your team. When they succeed..YOU PROUDLY WEAR YOUR HAT..WANTING OTHERS (IN YOUR WORDS) TO NOTICE YOU’RE THAT TEAMS FANS..and when the team loses? Oh hell no, you don’t wear the colors..you view their losing as YOU BEING A LOSER.
Dude, you know where this is going, right? How can you be anything but a loser? YOU stated you do it for ACCEPTANCE..and that you’ll be back..when the team wins..SO YOU CAN BRAG, AND GET ACCEPTANCE.
Of course when your friends laugh at you for being a fakeass fan, you just laugh it off..
But inside you know they’re right, right Bandwagon?
oh..I know, I know..”I don’t care..I DON’T..I DON’T..I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO NOT LOOK AT ME AS A LOSER”
Bad news for ya..too late.

Get the damn Oline fixed!!

Richochet, enjoy reading that gigantic mess over and over again, because I promise you no one else is going to.

Chris, how Cable culd allow this Oline to deteriorate le this is ridculous. He passed on sme very good Oline help in the last two drafts and look at this crap. Because he doesn’t want physical types he goes for these athletic types and look at this mess.
We must make sure this doesn’t happen next draft as well as the offseason. We need talented physical players on this line, no more scrap heap projects that he makes into a player. Damnit draft great players and let them be dominant. I hate his approach to the Oline. It stinks.

Hey Rack-ette. Start your next novel romance something like this:
It is the brutal winter of 1871. All the choice corn meal is gone. If it wasn’t for Captain Fremont and his fortitude, I would have nothing to live for.
There you go. Maybe someone would read your garbage.
October 8th, 2009 at 12:23 am
Hey OakWimp..don’t apologize. You’re slow. We get it. You get confused..We understand. Hell, little boy, YOU ran the “Russell is a great qb ” bit that Brownie keeps laughing at you..
BTW..little boy..most of that post was from RobG, whining about how he’s proud to jump on and off the bandwagon..I simply got the joy of laughing at him..much like I do you.
Now, for fun? Tell us how much russell has improved.
Oh..THAT’S RIGHT..you begged off like a slapped on little b!tch months ago.
Good. I like it when worms know their place.
You may go, flea.

lol..you moron.
Niners are in first place in the NFC West..by two games, dumbass.
How freaking stupid are you to bring up Hill, WHEN YOU’RE ON RECORD AS STATING THAT RUSSELL IS GOING TO BE A SUPERSTAR?
How can you be this ignorant? You take a class, or it just come natural?
October 8th, 2009 at 12:27 am
Rack-ette what was I thinking?? Here, let’s do this again:
It was the brutal winter of 1871. All is lost. The choice corn meal is gone. We thought Captain Hill could bring us to the promised land. But after the ancient aborigine some call Favre scalped us, we have no hope other than slow painful death.
There. Much better.
October 8th, 2009 at 12:35 am
Shaun Hill is the answer rack-ette. Keep repeating that. Even tho he is 29th in the NFL in total offense. You’ll be fine. lmao. dummfukk.

Russell? YOU KNOW..the qb YOU stated was an OBVIOUS STAR…GOING TO BE A SUPERSTAR??
Out of 32 qb’s? HE’S 33, lol..rating of 42..damn, dude, Hill has over TWICE his numbers..
thanks for the setup, moron. Love you trying to smack on a qb who’s easily twice your hero, while the Niners are in first and the raiders are in the gutter..dumbass.

Richo-shart “I was there man! I cheered no matter what the old man did! I cheered my bestest and the team got worse and worse, but I LIKE IT! I LOVED IT!!!!”

Russell will be as good as he wants to be, he has emmense talent top teir and it’s only experience ad what’s going on around him that’s holding him back.
When hecam here the C didn’t want him and undermined everything he did. He should’ve challenged Russell fined him and not accepted anything short of his best. Instead he allowed him to think he could get away with being unprofessionalism. A HC worth his salt pushes and prods and demands that his prise pupil conforms to what it takes to be his best. But his HC never believed in him. When Cable inherited Russell he was on a fast track to being an underacheiving washout.
Cable has exposed him and demanded he take his profession seriously, Outlining what he need to do an put his ass in QB school with the best instructors this profession has to offer and since then he has made grea strides tha aren’t obvious to the untrained eye. You would simply have had to be with him when cable got him to understand any of this. They are at the embroinic stages of Russell’s development. Like any student with bad habits it is taking Russell time to adjust. But he is struggling to adjust andCable has had to make some concessions in order to get some production. But Russell needs two more offseasons with Hackett before he gets to where the technigues they’re teaching is natural to him. That doesn’t preclude them from winning games and titles. Big Ben is just now getting to where Russell needsto go. But he has won in the meantime. Elway had the same struggles as did Steve Young when Steve came to the49ers he was a mess. It took 3 years for the 49ers to get him straightened out by the time Montana was winding down Stee was winding up. No one sawhis flawsuntil he 1st year starting ad it was at times very ugly, Jerry Rice and i talked about it almost weeekly. Then the light turned on and Young stated to get it. Two years later he was a SB winner. The QB coach was none other than our own Paul Hackett.
Russell needs the very same tutelage that Young recieved and his mechanics can be transformed into a very sound technician with aility to process infomation as he drops. Steve and Elway really stuggled with tha and would just take off running if the first read was covered.
Steve Young has conveniently forgotten those days because they were very ugly. He critigues Russell along with the gannons of the world as if none of them went through that and the truth is THEY ALL DID.
Russell is simply going through what it takest be a professional QB the sameas every other QBthat’s EVER played this game and he’s struggling like 98% of them did when they came in. Some never got it. His collegiate performances appear in short glimpses and then regresses back to trying to apply the teaching and that’s when you see the awkwardness and robotic behavior becase he’s trying to go through the process which he is very uncomfortale with. His body and mind want to play the way he always has but you can’t do that at this level.
He needs time to make that transition to becoming a pro and that will take time wether we like it or not…………period
October 8th, 2009 at 1:15 am
Oak, Shaun Hill is a jurneyman QB at best, when the 49ers start to plat top notch team s that ar competing for the playoffs he’ll get exposed. They must get Frank Gore healthy in a hurry or they will drop the next two games.
They are a run of mill teamthat has maufactur some wins on grit and guts. Pretty soon they’ll have actually be a good team, right now it’s easier to get away with the try hard effort stuff. But that team is seriously lacking talent. It will show soon enough.
A few injuries and some bad breaks and the bottom will fall out. This league is very unforgiving and any chink in your armour teams will find it and beat you to death with it.
If they’re for real you’ll see it in the next 4 games. Look at the division record it’s HORRIBLE they are the only team that’s half way decent the rest of the teams are worse than the Raiders. Tuth be toldthe 49ers aren’t much better than the Raiders if at all. But they’ve benefitted from a lousy division.
October 8th, 2009 at 1:40 am
I have been very angry of late because of the failures of the team, but JESUS, let’s get real.
I’m tired of hearing “we suck”, “fire Cable” etc etc.
The fact of the matter is that we have had to re-build the entire team over the last 3 years.
Jamarcus is having a tough time, but he has no O-line and rookies at WR.
We need to stick with Jamarcus, Murphy and DHB and get them up to speed TOGETHER. They all have the tools. They need time.
The offensive line is a mess. We can now see how good Gallery is in his absence, and Henderson has improved and is demonstrating that he was a great 3rd round pick.
We need a center and RT, as well as a RG. We can pick up all of these guys in the next draft. We also need a power LB and a backup CB.
Let’s stick with the guys have potential and pick up some tough guys.
I have to give Jamarcus some credit, he is a tough guy. He has to listen to all the venom of the press and the fans. He has shown that he pulls through in some tough situations. He is first now understanding how much work he needs to do. Give him a chance with some continuity.
Don’t be stupid, if you basically have nothing and have to replace the whole team in 3 years, it takes more time.
October 8th, 2009 at 1:41 am
Reading the last story about Cable working with the OL makes you start hoping again but the OL will have three guys starting after a week of practice in that position working together.
That better be a fast jelling process.
At the end of last year and prior to the draft Cable spoke several times about the need to bolster the OL in the draft.
And yet we didn’t.
At the end of the year he went out of his way to say how important it was to keep Grove if they were going to play as well as they did in the last three games of last season.
And yet we didn’t.
You can’t just change centers and expect everything to be just fine.
It all starts with the OL and although Grove isn’t a great center the Raiders only gave up five penalties in the last two games and only two in the TB game.
We should have gone for Mack among others in the draft. He was probably my favorite pick. We should have also worked on both lines.
As loathe as I am to criticize you Al, it’s your fault.
In the upcoming draft, where we look to be well placed, we need to do the same thing we needed to do in the last draft.
You need to get on the ball Al, or get out.
October 8th, 2009 at 1:41 am
Priest says: “Russell will be as good as he wants to be..”
That is entirely correct.
And that is entriely the problem.
You really have to wonder how much this guy wants it.
There is no denying his physical talent but you could say the same thing about Jeff George and Ryan Leaf.
In the last game he only completed a third of his attempted passes but he did play as if he wanted it.
October 8th, 2009 at 1:44 am
We haven’t gotten a single break this year either. A bunch of no-calls or bad calls, a bunch of injuries, including Ndamdi, Chaz, Mitchell, Branch, Eugene, Gallery, N. Miller, Javon, Justin Miller, JLH, and now McFadden, Z. Miller, and Green.
No excuses, but we have had adversity. The Cable jaw breaker, the Garcia garbage and the Gannon drama didn’t help either.
October 8th, 2009 at 1:48 am
Cope_fan, thanks for the support, I know we all want to win now but it just isn’t realistic. These guy’s are just way too young especially the QB and WR’s andthat is where your points should come from.
If we are patient this could pay off big, the Oline needs TALENT on it. NO more scrap heap types from cable, andjus develope this young team. And I think we’ll all be very happy with the results. So we’ll see.
It’s nice to have a sober post like yours to read, thanks again.
Adios!
October 8th, 2009 at 1:51 am
Priest. Just trying to keep it real. I am also critical at times, but am sick of it.
I am starting to think that Raider Nation is getting DISFUNCTIONAL itself.
We give up at the first sign of failure and start calling for everybody’s head. Players are expected to step in from day one and play like all pro’s, we boo the QB who hasn’t even had a chance to get himself together.
I think he will.

To say that YOU KNOW HE WON’T DO NOTHING is as stupid a comment I’ve heard. I will telll you that what you said is hard to understand, a proven veteran can in someway help this team period.

Let’s hope Gerrard Warren & Kirk Morrison are also up to the task!

Tommy Kelly had a LOT of tackles against Houston. I think it was 9 solo stops plus some assists.

What’s up Hwndr, bro honestly I have seen nothing from our team that can show we can compete with this giants team, they don’t even have to blitz cause the get consistant pressure with the front guys, and I rreally don’t know how we will be able to handle that. Cable has no creativity in his play calling. He’s gonna have Russell drop back and get killed. Id be surprised if he gets the man out of the pocket at all.
October 8th, 2009 at 7:04 am
the only way to beat the Giants is to take the ball out of Russell’s hands. that means a ton of running, trick plays, own the time of possession and field position battle (helps that we have Seabass & Shane)
a want to see a reverse to DHB. maybe a double reverse to Higgins. fake FG attempt. flea flicker. HB pass. bring in an extra OL and declare him an eligible receiver for a run play.
the defense is solid. they can hold thier own
we can win this game if we keep it low scoring and then kick a late FG or perhaps a punt return score from Higgins…
Russell is a liability and since Al Davis is forcing him in the starting lineup Tom Cable needs to be creative and find a way to win in spite of him, because we WILL NOT win games because of him. He’s not the type of QB that can put a team on his shoulders and takes them to victory. Those QB’s work hard and study hard prior to Sunday afternoon.
October 8th, 2009 at 7:06 am
So, everyone that has been wanting Bush to get more carries and become the lead back. Think he breaks out this game? Or will he do as bad as DMC has been?

Semcken said new talks would begin after the Super Bowl in February, and may involve the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Buffalo Bills, the Minnesota Vikings, the St. Louis Rams, the Chargers and the Oakland Raiders.
The San Francisco 49ers could also be pursued if a vote for a new stadium in Santa Clara fails.
“There are at least seven teams that are having an issue,” Semcken said. “San Francisco, I think they’re fine. So the other six teams, one of those six will move to our stadium.”

So, everyone that has been wanting Bush to get more carries and become the lead back. Think he breaks out this game? Or will he do as bad as DMC has been?
————
Let’s hope for a big breakout!
This game reminds me of the types of chances Bush has gotten the last few games. 3rd and 27 from the 5 — draw play to Bush (what are the odds of a first down?)
If he gets actual playing time this week, it will be with a completely mixed up o-line (except Mario), Z Miller coming off a concussion, starting FullBack confusion, and no passing game at all.
Let’s see him kick some butt anyway!

Semcken said new talks would begin after the Super Bowl in February, and may involve the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Buffalo Bills, the Minnesota Vikings, the St. Louis Rams, the Chargers and the Oakland Raiders

something to consider is the league confrences.
If bills, rams, vikes move that would screw up the existing conferences. Raiders or chargers move no big deal….
right now chargers have the lead…IMHO

We must make sure this doesn’t happen next draft as well as the offseason. We need talented physical players on this line, no more scrap heap projects that he makes into a player. Damnit draft great players and let them be dominant. I hate his approach to the Oline. It stinks.

Three words come to mind as I witness the current ineptness of the Raiders: Hapless, Hopeless and Heartbreaking.
As a kid, I remember sitting in the backseat of my dad’s ‘68 Dodge Dart riding to grandma’s house and listening to Bill King describe George Blanda coming off the bench at about 73 years old and leading the Raiders down the field for the winning TD.
It was all about pride. It was a special team to root for. Now, the Raiders are “special” in a durogatory way.
It’s hard to watch — but through all the pain I still bleed silver and black.

October 8th, 2009 at 10:40 am
AlisGod, if his jaw was broken, it’s not a stretch to assume he was punched. Him having his jaw broken from a shove is a very unlikely scenario. So I’d chalk it up as an error, not some kind of conspiracy to exaggerate every incident with the Raiders. Most people would assume that a punch was thrown if they heard there was an altercation that resulted in a broken jaw.

Rush would keep the team in St. Louis, he has personal interests and business interests there as does his partner Dave Checketts. (I think that’s how it is spelled)
October 8th, 2009 at 10:43 am
And I don’t know if I buy Hanson’s story, anyway. Broken jaw…from a shove? Cable would have had to have literally thrown him through the wall to break his jaw from merely pushing him. He might as well have punched him. Either that’s what happened, which is just as severe as a punch, if not more malicious, or Hanson is retracting to earn his way buck into the clubhouse.

At what point do you guys think the league intervenes with the Raiders? 6 straight seasons with 11 or more losses is already a record. We’re heading toward 7. In fact, this could be a 2-14 year at the rate things are going. We look hopeless. Would the league ever intervene? Is there an avenue to remove Al? Or, would they just rather sit back and laugh as the Raiders implode?

Listen up, Simpleton.
You can only get ousted if you BREAK THE RULES.
No rules says you can’t lose, or can’t make bad draft picks, or can’t fire HC after HC after HC or throw silly money at players that don’t deserve it.
No rules say you can’t butt in, can’t call down plays, can’t ride out onto the practice field and call over players to “tutor” them.
No rules, Mama’s boy, that says you can’t be the laughingstock of the NFL.
Usually one team is, each year.
It’s just the Raiders have been for 6 years straight, now going on 7 years.
Oh, and certainly no rule that says the fans can’t be clueless.
NOTHING THE LEAGUE CAN DO.
Oh..and Gumby? THE OTHER OWNERS WILL NEVER VOTE FOR IT..Al makes them look good. Al stupidly gives up players for next to nothing. Playing the Raiders is penciled in as a W.
Funny thing is reading Detroit fans saying “hey, at least we aren’t the Raiders”.

Shaun Hill went undrafted. played in one game for the Vikings in 2005, in which he didn’t even throw a pass.
He was out of the league in 2006, then the 49ers picked him up for depth, prior to the 2007 NFL season.
the Raiders drafted Russell #1 overall that year and Alex Smith, 49ers #1 overall draft pick was going into his 3rd NFL season (when most QB’s are almost fully developed).
who would have thought 3 years later that Shaun Hill would be the most talented QB in the bay area ???
what a sad state of affairs!

RockStar, I don’t know. It’s hard to say what he could do if he had a qb coach and was in a good system. He’s got an arm. If you had a solid coaching staff that could write up a good playbook around him, something a little more current than Al’s Sid Gilman playbook, who knows?

MR… My money’s on the Chargers if anyone relocates, but I really think the league will expand to get a team there. Jacksonville has a relatively new stadium, the Rams (as LAtotheBay pointed out) have Limbaugh’s midwest propaganda ministry in the Midwest, no way the Vikings leave Minnesota, and the league does everything it can to thwart Al Davis as it is; no way he gets a brand new facility in a market like that. Of course, he’ll probably sue, claiming eminent domain or something but the league won’t lose that one in my opinion. I really feel it’ll be expansion, with the rules (draft, etc.) slanted toward making them as competetive as possible as quickly as possible.

Mr. According to the report and confirmed by Hanson’s attorney. There were no punches thrown. Cable pushed him against the wall and that broke his jaw along the way. Believe me that is a far cry from swinging at someone. My take is the fcker got in his face and Cable showed him. Far cry from throwing a puch for all the hoopla the mediots threw at Cable.

San diego would be an obvious choice as they have nothing on the table right now for a new stadium. I read the developer is friends with the SD owner. Would love to see them leave as i hate the chargers, and the fans are bandwangoners….

No expansion.
Not for quite some time.
They have the divisions how they view it as perfect.
8 divisions.
4 teams each.
And so it shall be. Adding another team messes it all up..has to be minimum two at a time.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:46 am

Be interesting to see where the new LA team comes from. I understand what you’re saying about the divisions and number of teams and all, but if there’s one market where they’d make an exception it’s that one. We’ll see.

You know what im gonna go out on a limb and say I think the raiders may pull an upset this week. I think they are being completely over looked and underestimated this game. I mean they gianst are acting as if they’re going to play a lil league team ” oh yeah we’re going to throw at nnamdi and be successful,” “we don’t even have to allow eli to practice to win this game thats how easy it is” and we all know when teams think like that they get walked. I remmember pittsburg came into oakland with that mentality and kicked their asses, and nnam had like 2 int’s. So I think we’re going to pull an upset due to neww yorks big headness.

BSJ: I think Danny Southwick should have changed his name to Sam Williams instead. at least that guarantees him a spot on the 53 man roster every year …

The Bush finally gets his chance!
WTF took so damn long.
This move should have been made LAST YEAR,not because of injury but because he’s the best RB on our roster.
Tough test this week against NYG defense but I’d be willing to go down with the ship alongside Bush over McFadden ANYDAY!
All I want to see is Cable pound the rock all day long!!

By the way is this a Raiders forum or a soap-opera between certain posters?

this has to be the recipe for success, even against a stout Giants D-Line. Russell isn’t going to carry the team.
Kell waits to analyze every word I type. He loves to talk about all non-football related things with me for some reason. It’s flattering, yet somewhat annoying.

The cowgirls smashed the Giants for over 200 yards rushing.
I am well aware of the fact that we don’t have a running game like Dallas but their not that great either.
I’m just hopin for a HEAVY dose of the rushing attack cause regardless of what anyone thinks about Jamarcus,he’s not going to win any games for us at this point.

…and what better way to get a fledgling O-line going in the right direction than by RUNNING THE DAMN BALL
