O-line gets extra attention

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at 1:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Tom Cable was back in his element Wednesday.

It could have been two years ago, with Cable working as a relatively anonymous position coach, alternately yelling and cajoling, kicking some guys in the butt, patting others on the back. A live camera would have to bleep out 30 percent of his vocabulary.

Cable was working with the grunts on the offensive line, with Jim Michalczik watching closely and Cable doing most of the talking.

“Use your legs,” Cable barked to 6-foot-8 tackle Erik Pears. “You’re an athlete and you’re long.”

Within the Raiders’ most daunting challenge of the season at the Meadowlands Sunday is the game within a game, with a makeshift offensive line which was taken apart in Houston attempting to block the Giants’ front four, generally considered to be the best in the NFL.

With left guard Robert Gallery not at practice and unlikely to make the world’s fastest recovery from a broken left fibula, and Cornell Green out with a calf injury, the Raiders look as if they’ll line up as they did against Houston when Green went out.

Pears was going through drills as the right tackle, with Cooper Carlisle at right guard, Samson Satele at center, Chris Morris at left guard and Mario Henderson at left tackle.

“It can go two ways,” Henderson said. “We can go out there and embarrass ourselves or go out their and make a name for ourselves. It’s a good opportunity for us.”

Said Morris: “That’s how we will measure ourselves, going up against the best. If we can put up a good game like we plan on doing it will be good for us.”

As the Raiders ended warmups and drills, there was no sign of wide receiver Chaz Schilens, who is beginning his seventh week of missed practice with a broken fifth metatarsal on his left foot. It was originally described as a four to six week injury.

Also missing were Gallery and Nick Miller. Tight end Zach Miller, who has not been cleared to play yet following a concussion, was watching practice in a baseball hat.

Assuming Schilens won’t play, if Miller isn’t cleared, the two receivers with whom JaMarcus Russell had developed some sort of comfort level with would not be available.

More to come following practice after Cable’s press briefing . . .

are you related to Dakota? I see many similarities…

let’s find out. How about some BBQ Beaver for lunch?
    =========================================================
dude, I dont know Dakota and I am not related to anybody in this post, I am a fan who bleeds silver and black just like others in this post. It is simple to understand my position, I played football in high school and when a everyone are working hard and we are not losing there is someone to be blamed, coach, players, etc. In the Raiders case, JR is a fat, lazy, arrogant SOB who doesnt care about winning, you can see it by the way he plays, acts, talks and by the reports that he had been fined for missing meetings. Can you imagine any QB in this league missing meetings? you hear a Wr or LB acting this way not your franchise player and QB. This is why we are losing, we are 1-3 for a reason everyone is trying hard except the most important player JR, he is to be blamed if we end up 3-13 in this season.

Of course not, Davis is fascinated with throwing the bomb, football is a game of field position, guys are bigger much faster and the defenses are more complex than the past, many teams won’t just give up the long ball each team has to play to their strengths, take a few chances and take what the d gives….can’t force the long ball… that’s why Davis needs to take a ride out of town and Cable with him
    ===================================================

Even the founders and architects of the dink and dunk or west coast offense, the “take what the defense gives you” approach, would take shots down the field. Walsh/Montana/Young would air it out a few times a game. There is no denying that. All teams have to do that. The issue is, if you can never complete that play, no one is going to defense it and they are going to continue to stack up.

trueraider, can you tell me why the Raiders cannot land a “prominent coach”? Because none of them want to work for AD because they know just like everyone else except you that AD wants the team to run the way he wants it to go, so we get these make shift guys to come in and all we do is loose. Do you think that if we had a Bill Cower here we would be loosing nah I don’t think so…. and it is Davis fault he is a major part of the problem, we need a true coach. Not an oline converted HC and a GM to get this team going in the right direction. al needs to pack it in and turn the organization over, we have way too much talent on this team….. a real coach will know how to get the most out of his players, Cable don’t fit the bill
    =====================================================
If we had Cowher we would still be losing if JR was our QB, look at Ken Whisenhunt he came to the Cardinals and first thing he did was bench Leinart, it is simple, we cant win with JR, JR is the worst QB in this league which equals to 3-13. Now do you believe you can win with a bum QB who doesnt wanna put on the work if u had Cowher?

  12. RaiderRockstar Says:

Lions won ZERO games last year. Raiders won five

    Matthew Stafford (rookie)

JaMarcus Russell (3rd year in the league)

Stafford has more passing yards, better completion percentage, better QB Rating, 4 times as many TD passes and just as many wins.

let’s go grunts. zero sacks allowed & zero penalties!

that’ll be a good enough game from them imo. I don’t expect them to come out & dominate and have Bush & Fargas rush for 200 yards against them, but I think my expectations can be met with some hard work and a positive attitude. now whip these hogs into shape Coach Cable!

  15. Silver and Barf Says:

Interesting note passed on from David White at the Chron…

“** Just saw this stat on Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell: on first down passing, he is 12 of 40 for 136 yards with one sack, three interception and a passer’s rating of 10.0.

On fourth down Russell is 3 for 4 with a passer’s rating of 156.3 — two points off the perfect rating. **”

Interesting….and makes me wonder if Russell’s issue is something that really hasn’t been mentioned much:

    Concentration and Focus

Somehow, Cable or someone else needs to get Russell to view EVERY SINGLE PLAY as 4th down and the game on the line.

It’d be interesting to see what kind of performance he could produce today, right now, with that type of mindset on every play, and every pass.

Let’s not forget that this is the pair, with all their speed, that makes Brady the world’s most overrated NFL player ever. Hell, they even made Cassell look like a real NFL QB despite not even being able to win a starting job in college!

Speed creates huge matchup problems. It causes defenses to over-adjust and opens up other options. The three things missing right now are:
    1) DHB has to learn how to clear the jams and actually get deep to start the threat
    2) The play calling has to work in several deep attempts to prove that the threat is legit
    3) JaMarcus has to actually read when it’s there and be ready to check down to a dump when it isn’t
    =====================================================

What Zymurge says he is exactly right. Wes welker the sure handed possession receiver is what makes the NE offense go. Saying “sure handed” in the same breath as “Raiders” is kind of a joke.
As I said after the Denver game, the 2nd pick that Russell threw, the one where tons of boos sh** rained down on him, was a timing pattern that Bailey knocked DHB off his route. lst off, if timing was such a simple concept, they wouldn’t be paying these guys millions to do it. 2ndly, that was a complete rookie mistake to let that All Pro corner knock you off your route. That will be corrected with playing time.

Not only does the play calling have to work in the deep routes, the team HAS to execute those plays. That means not only hitting the receiver, but also catching the ball, keeping possession of it, and keeping feet in bounds. Something that has not happened with regularity.

Draws, Screens and checkdowns would help the long play develop which would back the defense up, which in turn would open up running lanes. None of that has happened.

^^^^^^^The problem is Cable and Tollner are FORCING the deep ball and low percentage throws with ROOKIE WR’s starting and with a struggling QB.

NOT a good recipe for success at all!

Cable and Tollner need to concentrate on sustaining drives with the short to intermediate passing game and work perfecting the execution of screens and rollout plays like what the Vikes and Eagles do.

  26. Scottish Raider Says:

Silver and Barf – good observation.

At LSU, Russell was allowed to ad-lib most play. It was a very loose playbook – plus he had a very solid Oline and some very good receivers (Bowe, etc.). Perhaps he just struggles with understanding instructions, perhaps the Raiders are trying to script too much for him, perhaps they should just allow him to audible his way through the game. More spread, more no-huddle. Just let him play on instinct – as he has to on 4th down?

  27. lefty12 Says:

now all we need is a QB who can implement the short to intermediate passing game, because the one we have playing now sure as hell can’t.bench him for a game or two like we did last year-it seemed to work last year.

Another thing. Russell is at his most comfortable throwing straight downfield to Miller. Most of his misfires are to the touchlines. So why doesn’t Cable call more 2 TE sets and gets Myers or Stewart in the game alongside Miller?

If we are going to stick with Russell, we need to play to his strengths. I would go with 2 TEs and just give him some big targets in midfield. Not much else to lose.

Ok, here is the problem with your analogy, it is not the environment that made JR fat, lazy, and a bust. He doesnt seem to have the passion to succeed in the NFL, whats the prove? Simple, in the combine when u are suppose to be on your best shape in life, dude comes in over weight and out of shape doesn’t even workout, during the time he was holding out, cameras spotted him drinking beers in LSU games rather than working on his footwork. Listen, we were bad against the run when Randy Moss was here but our offense was functioning with old Collins as our QB, today, we have the defense that can allows us to win problem is we lack the QB that can help our defense. I think we go back to what we do best, bring in veterans or decent QBs and hope we draft OL and DL along with picking up decent LBs from free agency.

Cracks me up how people always laugh about Al and James Jett.

The Raiders got more mileage out of James Jett than just about any team has ever gotten out of an UNDRAFTED player.

And those ROOKIE stats above by an UNDRAFTED FREE AGENT are most likely numbers that Michael Crabnuts wouldn’t have achieved this season even if he hadn’t held out.

One thing I have learned is people who are pains in the ass in the beginning of a relationship, are pains in the ass in the middle and pains in the ass in the end of the relationship. That right there is the Michael Craptree Story, hence why 9 teams passed. As for the Whiners, their 3 wins have come against teams with a combined 2-9 or .187 winning percentage. Not good. They have played one team with a winning record. They lost. Right now they are 28th in total offense ahead of The Raiders, KC, St Louis, and Cleveland, and behind Tampon Bay. Not good. Especially when you are playing teams with a .187 winning percentage.

  55. Chris in NY Says:

    Definitely Oak,

If anyone can pinpoint ONE time this season where a receiver made a great catch or a nice adjustment on an off-target pass to make a big play I’ll buy you a beer. Most QBs get that kind of help on probably 3-5 passes per game. JaMarcus has yet to get that kind of help through 4 games. I understand that they’re rookies, so I’m not trying to kill the WRs, but NO OTHER QB in the league is playing with a pair of rookie starting WRs.

I’ve heard people try to say Peyton Manning is doing it with 2 rookies (Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon). First of all, he’s Peyton Manning. Second of all, no, he’s not. Ever hear of a guy by the name of Reggie Wayne? He’s a Pro Bowl veteran receiver. And Garcon is not a rookie either. He’s a 2nd year player who was drafted ahead of Chaz Schilens last year. So Manning’s weapons would be comparable to Russell’s if say, the Raiders had Anquan Boldin and Schilens lining up at WR right now. They don’t. They have DHB and Louis Murphy.

  56. Silver-n-Smac Says:

Not to go down memory lane, but, just imagine if Barrett Robbins doesn’t go AWAL the day before the biggest game in his life.

It’s amazing to me how one incident like that actually (well, I should say POTENTIALLY) changed the future of so many different people and scenarios.

We would have still had to rebuild our team, as we were definitely old, but, a guy like Robbins would most likely still be playing.

He’d be up there in years, but, was hands-down the best center in football.

Imagine him next to Gallery & Henderson right now.

Hell, we could just declare the right side of the field off-limits and dominate the left!

Here’s something to chew on: JaMarcus has yet to throw an INT that was his fault this season:

No. 1 – Murphy ran a sloppy route and didn’t go after the ball aggressively, waiting for it to come to him. The DB did go after the ball aggressively and blew past Murphy for the pick.

No. 2 – Hail mary pass.

No. 3 – DHB falls down after contact with the defender. Could have been pass interference. The pass was on target for a completion if DHB stays on his feet.

No. 4 – DHB bumps into a defender coming out of his break on a deep crossing pattern. The ball was thrown in anticipation to an opening where DHB would’ve been if he didn’t get bumped off his route. He couldn’t make it to that spot and another defender picked the pass.

I agree he has not thrown an interception in the DB’s hands this season. While he is still struggling with his accuracy at least he is not doing his best Jay Schroeder impression. I would rather have him throw it away then force one and get picked off for 6. The O-line’s inconsistency is hurting the Raiders the most no matter who is at QB if your Oline doesn’t play as unit no one can be successful.

THOSE ARE PHYSICAL GUYS!! Who do we have now??? Tommmie Kelly?? Howard?? CJ?? Jay Richardson?? Satele?? Cornell Green?? Kirk Morrison?? Ricky Brown?? Hiram Eugene?? Shoot I look at those names and I want to get a bunch of my friends to go suit up, line up and play those guys.

    Chris:

Your comments are right-on. The problem is that there are a lot of JaMarcus haters & DHB haters in here who already have their minds made up.

They’re the same people who were booing him at the SD game and begging to have Gradkowski in there.

I turned around and gave about 50 people the finger and the “are you kidding me, do you really want Gradkowski as your starting QB” glare.

30 seconds later, Russell throws the potential game winning bomb to Murphy.

Does he need to “visually” look like he really wants it more? Sure.

Does he need to not smile on the sidelines when we’re down by 23 points? sure.

But the reality is that this is a 23 year old kid who’s simply not a man yet.

But the reason I don’t see any semblance of BUST in him is this:

Guys like Alex Smith, Akili Smith, Jim Druckenmiller, Ryan Leif. . .those guys NEVER showed the crunch-time display that Russell showed at the end of the 1st two games this season.

“BUSTS” simply do NOT make clutch throws in pressure situations. Russell DID.

This truly gives me confidence that once the kid grows up, matures into a grown man, acts more like a man, that he will be a damned good QB in this league.

Raider games are the best bar-none. We cheer our asses off, win or lose.

And there are a lot of reasons the Raiders have trouble selling out that people don’t want to talk about.

Let’s be real about this. Do you see a lot of kids at Raider games? No. Do you see a lot of women? No.
Do you see a predominately white-collar crowd? No.

Those are things that you see at every other NFL stadium and that, in itself, is a big contributer to sell-outs. The Raiders have, by far, the most ethnically-diverse crowd in the NFL, and frankly, that scares a lot of people. They’re too scared to bring their kids or their wives or their girlfriends.

Does that make it right? Of course not, but, that’s just the harsh reality.

Lynn from snot is right, once the Silver and Black is in your blood it doesn’t leave, regardless of how disgusted you are.

I will say this though, like you all don’t know anyway. . .Al dying is the only way to salvation.

And . . . am I the only fan (25 years a fan) that feels there is no possible way we avoid a 1-7 start? Beating the Giants, Eagles, Jets, and Chargers the next four games. . . I see it not happening.

Will there really be anything interesting about being a Raider fan at that point?

Will there really be anything interesting, unique or cool about the Raiders, any more so than any other NFL team?

    The answer is HELL NO.

Obviously, to some of you, the only reason to root for this team is the wins.

Let me tell you something; There is only one reason the Raiders are different, and unique, and cool, and “us-against-the-world” and that reason is Al Davis.

For all his greatness, for all his faults (and he has many), he is the single ingredient that makes our team different. And to me, as a fan, that is cool.

We’ve won with Al and we’ve lost with Davis. But, once he’s gone, all that uniqueness goes away. We become just another NFL franchise, win or lose.

Is that really that interesting to any of you? If it is, then damn. . . .go root for any of the other 31 teams that may be having success right now.

I for one choose to be part of the NATION that says “screw the rest of you”.
