Raiders bring back Gary Russell

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at 11:14 am in Oakland Raiders.

Gary Russell, a running back/fullback who had a solid training camp and preseason, was brought back Wednesday to help compensate for the loss of Darren McFadden to a torn meniscus.

Justin Miller, who was brought back last week to return kickoffs but averaged 17.7 yards per return, was cut.

More to come later . . .

I was suprised when we cut him in the first place.

With this guy can we actually see what he does this time, unlike Rankin where he didn’t even get one carry.

  2. RaiderDogg Says:

I like the versatility of this kid. Going back and watching pre-season film, he looks like a better rb than McFadden has all year. Hell so did Rankin!

Cracks me up how people always laugh about Al and James Jett.

The Raiders got more mileage out of James Jett than just about any team has ever gotten out of an UNDRAFTED player.

And those ROOKIE stats above by an UNDRAFTED FREE AGENT are most likely numbers that Michael Crabnuts wouldn’t have achieved this season even if he hadn’t held out.

Come on man. Don’t be so pessimistic. Let’s root for both of our Russells & beat the crap out of the G-Men this weekend!

    Go Raiders baby!

  7. Silver-n-Smac Says:

Well, I guess one silver lining is that our O-Line looks fantastic compared to Green Bay’s.

Surprisingly, we really haven’t given up too many sacks thusfar (thusfar being the key word LOL)

I could be wrong (I haven’t done my “research” LOL) but I believe the Whiners have given up considerably more sacks than us.

And yes, I’m reaching at straws to make myself feel better.

Ok you can never have enough Russells on your team. Now if we could just get some more Napoleons on the team I think were okay.

  10. Zymurge Says:

True. We have to compensate for the recent reduction in Millers.

  11. Silver-n-Smac Says:

I think we had an O-Lineman named Marc Wilson in training camp.

Talk about a name that brings back some nightmares.

My all-time worst Raider QB – The Great Marc Wilson.

The thought of how many more superbowls we may have won with the talent we had around that guy makes me sick.

  12. Lynn from Snot Says:

I guess Gary Russell will return kickoffs and JLH will return punts. I assume the giants will hand off quite a bit to keep Eli from further injury.

  13. jsj4raiders Says:

James Jett 1997 led the the AFC with 12 TD’s and was second in the NFL. Langston Walker would be a welcome addition to a weak line.

  14. Lynn from Snot Says:

I think if we keep our pad level lower it bodes well for the Giants game

  15. DKnight007 Says:

Should have never cut G Russell in the 1st place!

They cut him over Luke Lawton??

    Give me a break!

  16. Lynn from Snot Says:

  21. NorthernD Says:

James Jett was a great pick-up as a free agent. It’s always good when you can get a starter without wasting a draft pick. But DHB will be lucky to put up the same numbers Jett did. So far he has shown no indication of being productive, or even that he wants the ball.
The real problem with Jett was that they stuck with him as the #2 reciever when it was clear he was just a speed guy. Getting a solid pair of hands opposite T Brown could have improved the Raiders years before Rice came to town.
The same thing will happen with DHB. Instead of using him as a 3rd WR, Al Davis wants him to take up time as the #2. Same thing all over again.
It’s funny because AL thinks you win with burners, but if you look back, you find the find the best receivers were possesion guys. Fred B and Tim B. Rice and Brown were slow, with Porter going deep, and they went to the superbowl…

Then he’s going to attempt to convince wr coach Sanjay Lal that he can go up and get any pass over any db in the league, but only if the football is made of freshly trimmed Arby’s roast beef au jus.

And finally Krappy is going to go for the proverbial gold and get a 1 on 1 with head coach Tom Cable, where he’ll unveil a private workout tape of him kicking the crap out of a 94 year old man at the barber shop.

And if all else fails, Krappy is going to whine his way into the cafeteria where he’ll threaten to blow up his own head in the team microwave unless he’s given a position on the shower detail staff.

    why not Langston?

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

They’re just waiting for his weigh-in. Under 360 = RT. Over 360 = DT. Over 460 = RG and RT.

Also, they probably won’t sign him until they find a helmet big enough. Is Ted Washington’s still lying around? http://www.eaglex.de/pics/walls/sapp_washington.jpg

OMG look how much bigger he is than Sapp!

  26. RaiderRockstar Says:

I think Oren O’Neal should be the emergency 3rd RB.

Gary Russell is a wasted signing…

O’Neal running behind Luke Lawton is a solid infusion of power in short yardage & goaline – but not with Carlisle & Pears on the right side against the Giants D-Line!

Mark Tausher, Jon Runyan or Langston Walker should have been signed if they felt Justin Miller’s services were no longer needed. Maybe even Chris McAlister?

  27. Richochet Says:

And Rice..oh, yeah, gotcha. That NFC Rookie of the Year award? Sure..Bey’s in line for that, right? And Rice’s 10 catch, 241 yds in ONE game? Oh yeah, I can see Bey doing that..oh..next week?

I’m glad the Raiders didn’t draft Crabnuts.

    Screw Crabnuts.

I think DHB will be a better receiver in this league and only time can prove that.

Screw the the media & the rest of the NFL if they want to take shots at us. Easy to take shots 4 weeks into a guys career. It’s absolutely hilarious in today’s “electronic” world, how everyone wants instant gratification.

15 years ago, absolutely nothing would be expected of a rookie receiver.

And what J-Russ has done after 24 starts in the NFL would be standard QB growing pains.

But people are stupid these days. That’s just the way it is our BSPN worls.

Do you know what Jerry Rice was known for his rookie year? That’s right – dropping balls.

    Have some patience people.

And let’s wait a year or two before we make any judgment on either Crabnuts or DHB.

  29. DirtyBathWater Says:

Rich Gannon said that Cable must get credit cause he knows his personnel he has on the team………..I must disagree with Gannon on that point, 1. Cable should know that a “healthy Javon Walker is an upgrade over the 2 rookies we have that are struggling. 2. He should know how to use russells assets, he’s not a straight up drop back passer, he is atheletic for a guy his size and can move, he would know to get him out of the pocket, roll outs boot legs etc. 3. He should know that mcfadden is not an inside runner, all of his yards are best off the edges on the outside, and he would know that bush poses more of a consistant threat in the run game since he is big has real good balance and elusive for a big guy, he makes more people miss than mcfadden, mcfadden just tries to outrun guys like he did in college which is back firing. And lastly cable should know that the long ball is not what this offense need right now, shorten the routes and play the other rookie TE collecting dust on the bench for he will with out a doubt help, he’s a good blocker and shown great hands, but Cable don’t do these things because he don’t know the personnel he’s an Oline coach that’s all!!!

  30. Zymurge Says:

Northern D: if you don’t think that WR speed kills, then you might want to inform Belichik of your opinion. Maybe he’ll then consider benching his burner, Moss, and lightning quick counterpart, Welker, to go with some slower guys to fit your statement.

Let’s not forget that this is the pair, with all their speed, that makes Brady the world’s most overrated NFL player ever. Hell, they even made Cassell look like a real NFL QB despite not even being able to win a starting job in college!

Speed creates huge matchup problems. It causes defenses to over-adjust and opens up other options. The three things missing right now are:
    1) DHB has to learn how to clear the jams and actually get deep to start the threat
    2) The play calling has to work in several deep attempts to prove that the threat is legit
    3) JaMarcus has to actually read when it’s there and be ready to check down to a dump when it isn’t

#1 will come with seasoning. DHB has the speed, size and work ethic to manage it.

#2 is somewhat hindered by a patchwork line and questionable protection and conservative play calling to help keep some semblance of time of possession

#3 JR seems to be looking short first these days. He needs to learn to read the safety quickly before making his decision. As #1 improves and it becomes easier to see if DHB is loose deep early in the play, he will improve here.

As a possible sign that the 32 folks who own NFL franchises realize that they have some important issues that they need to discuss face-to-face, next week’s ownership meeting in Boston will include a session limited to the principal owner of each team, a league source tells us.

The move often causes complaints from teams that choose to send someone other than the principal owner to the site of the meeting, but there are no exceptions. If the principal owner does not attend, no designee may do so.

It’s believed that next week’s owners-only session will focus on the labor agreement, and possibly revenue sharing. Other business will be conducted at sessions that aren’t limited to the principal team owners.

    Just for information sake:

Jay Shroeder got worse and worse as his career went on. His completion percentage while with the Raiders, even after having been in the league for years WAS IN THE FORTIES!!!

Hostetler had the dual advantages of being on a Super Bowl contending team AND sitting and watching the first five years of his career. If we were Super Bowls contenders and Russell sat for five years, do you think he would play better??

Jeff George is an interesting comparison because he really did not develop until he went to Atlanta his 5th year in the league. His 3rd year as a starter for Indy he threw over twice as many pix as TD’s.

Gannon basically did not play a down until his 4th year in the league. Again, think any of this makes a difference??

He won 5 of 11 games that year (still better than Russell). Tui started like 2 games between 2001 & 2003. Billy Joe Hobert was a 4 year backup. Marinovich was a total bust, but he had 8 TD’s to 9 INT’s and a overall QB Rating above 66 (just about even with Russell) LOL

    =====================================================

What Zymurge says he is exactly right. Wes welker the sure handed possession receiver is what makes the NE offense go. Saying “sure handed” in the same breath as “Raiders” is kind of a joke.
As I said after the Denver game, the 2nd pick that Russell threw, the one where tons of boos sh** rained down on him, was a timing pattern that Bailey knocked DHB off his route. lst off, if timing was such a simple concept, they wouldn’t be paying these guys millions to do it. 2ndly, that was a complete rookie mistake to let that All Pro corner knock you off your route. That will be corrected with playing time.

Not only does the play calling have to work in the deep routes, the team HAS to execute those plays. That means not only hitting the receiver, but also catching the ball, keeping possession of it, and keeping feet in bounds. Something that has not happened with regularity.

Draws, Screens and checkdowns would help the long play develop which would back the defense up, which in turn would open up running lanes. None of that has happened.

DirtyBath — I’m not kidding at all about Brady. Put him on any other team, without the help of the best mind in football when it comes to adapting a system to the opposition, a consistently solid defense that always puts the offense in a place to win, an eerie knowledge of what the other defense is going to call, etc and he’d be very average. In fact, his numbers were very average until Moss came over and started catching jump balls into double coverage.

All the evidence that you need to see that it is the system and not the player is Cassell. By about his 3rd game starting (in both his college and NFL career combined!) he had it figured out enough that there was virtually no dropoff in QB production with him at the helm.

I’m not saying Brady sucks, just that he’s average. take him out of that system and take away his numbers from the season when Belichik had him running up the scores every game (where other more classy coaches wouldn’t) and his stats stay average at best. And with his lack of mobility, behind an average or below line, he’d last maybe 2-3 games per season, tops.

In all sincerity, I would take at least 10 other starting NFL QBs over Brady right now if I were building my dream team for one season. Don’t confuse that with fantasy rankings, that are as much reflective of the system as the player.

Well….. brady would do good on any other team in the nfl except our Raiders…. the organization is just rotten to the core, I don’t think any other organization is as disfunctional as Oakland……we haven’t been stable in a long time, I can’t think of another team more unstable as the raiders, with the revolving door of coaches, an Owner that wants us to play like they did in the past… no Qb can survive here

KK-one of the differences between us is while i can acknowledge what you say about the org. as being true, you won’t acknowledge the fact Russell is terrible and is more than likely a bust.

How can you blame the players when, in the last 100 games the Raiders have won 25 of them?

The Raiders have been horrible since a long time. Russell hasn’t.

  68. KoolKell Says:

    Lefty,

Let me put it this way. The Raiders are the laughingstock of the league, not JaMarcus Russell, understand?

  69. NorthernD Says:

“I’m not saying Brady sucks, just that he’s average.”

Are you kidding? He won three superbowl before Moss came to town, and none since.

  70. NorthernD Says:

    DirtyBathWater
You’re right about Brady. He would do better than JaMarcus here though.
He runs a system that works for his strengths and not one designed to make the owner happy. He asked to bring Welker in. Do you think that would happen with Raiders?

  71. TrueRaider Says:

This organization is bad because of the players we got, we have to admit that our D line became better with the addition of Seymour, overall our defense seems good therefore if we had a decent QB not the mannings just a decent like Orton, Jason Campbell, Schaub, or even Garrard we would be 2-2 at least.
You guys can blame the Ol, Al Davis, Wrs, etc but honestly I never heard Al or the rest of those who I mentioned not trying to win, Al traded for seymour, Ol are protecting Jr, DHB and Murphy are trying their best by at least being professional rather than divas, the only real problem in all this is JAMARCUS THE BUST RUSSEL. you cant win with the worst QB in the NFL, simple. Trade for Kevin Kolb thats much better.

  72. DirtyBathWater Says:

Of course not, Davis is fascinated with throwing the bomb, football is a game of field position, guys are bigger much faster and the defenses are more complex than the past, many teams won’t just give up the long ball each team has to play to their strengths, take a few chances and take what the d gives….can’t force the long ball… that’s why Davis needs to take a ride out of town and Cable with him

The Raiders are the laughingstock of the league, in large part due to the play of JaMarcus Russell, understand?

  74. edward teach Says:

I know this is probably going to piss some people off, but those of you that think Russell is the problem have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

Does he have a ways to go? Yes. Most young QBs do. If you know anything whatsoever about football, however, you do not place the blame for this team’s struggles at his feet. It makes a good story on pregame shows, but it is far from the truth.

    Fire away, boys.

  78. DirtyBathWater Says:

trueraider, can you tell me why the Raiders cannot land a “prominent coach”? Because none of them want to work for AD because they know just like everyone else except you that AD wants the team to run the way he wants it to go, so we get these make shift guys to come in and all we do is loose. Do you think that if we had a Bill Cower here we would be loosing nah I don’t think so…. and it is Davis fault he is a major part of the problem, we need a true coach. Not an oline converted HC and a GM to get this team going in the right direction. al needs to pack it in and turn the organization over, we have way too much talent on this team….. a real coach will know how to get the most out of his players, Cable don’t fit the bill

The Raiders are laughed at, scorned and ridiculed by the NFL commentariat. FOR YEARS.

Russell is a 23 year old QB in the league 3 years. 2 Head Coaches 3-4 play-callers, 2 Rookie WR’s

If you can’t see the difference in institutional ridicule, and poor play by a young QB in said institution, so be it. Have a nice day.

  81. RaiderRockstar Says:

edward teach: i don’t think you offended anybody

you basically said “it’s not Russell’s fault” without listing any reasons why it isn’t or blaming Tom Cable & Al Davis (like everyone else does)

please explain how Russell is doing his part. what is there about his game that you like? give us the positives, because all that shows up on Sundays are the negatives …

If we had Cowher we would still be losing if JR was our QB, look at Ken Whisenhunt he came to the Cardinals and first thing he did was bench Leinart, it is simple, we cant win with JR, JR is the worst QB in this league which equals to 3-13.

Lions won ZERO games last year. Raiders won five

    Matthew Stafford (rookie)

JaMarcus Russell (3rd year in the league)

Stafford has more passing yards, better completion percentage, better QB Rating, 4 times as many TD passes and just as many wins.

  85. RaiderRetribution Says:

Mr. Gary Russell was excellent on kick return coverage as well during the preseason, illegal wedge by Houston aside we have not been as dominant this season with our special teams coverage as we have in the past.

Good pick up, also I think this will send a message to Mr. Lawton as well to catch the damn ball and block.

  90. pirate1 Says:

What the FCK? This is the saddest I have ever seen this team, and I have been a raider fan and watching and attending games since 1970. This team is a total waste. Giants just scored again in 10 seconds from getting a JR fumble. Is it legal for this team to masquerade as professional. I’ve seen games on Friday nights and on yesterday that had more polished players. I can’t stand to watch anymore, I’m out. FCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!

  91. pirate1 Says:

One more thing, Al has taken this team from the most feared to the most fcked. He has been the only constant in all this losing and the decisions being made on and off the field. At 80 years of age he must realize that he is no longer the sharpest knife in the draw, hell, he’s not even a butter knife at this point. Time to give it up, the game has clearly passed you and your judgment by, leaving a shell of what once was. Thanks for the Raiders memories of the 70s and 80s but it’s time to say goodbye.

  92. pirate1 Says:

F#CK, my cable television must be acting up, I could swear I just saw the Raiders score a touchdown. I’m going to be on Time Warner’s ass as soon as I stop this comment. How cruel of them to fake a Raiders score to keep audience tuned in. I’m also going to complain to the FCC about this as well.

  93. pirate1 Says:

People the insults at my house are flying fast and furious, my daughter just said I could get more satisfaction watching paint dry than watching the Raiders play. She states any rational person would have thrown the towel in long ago, I guess I love pain, because this sh*t is agonizing to watch. Manning on the sideline before the half, shows the respect they have for us. Face it, we are the laughing stock of the NFL and should be delisted as a professional football team until we acquire that level of talent, coaching, and ownership.

  94. pirate1 Says:

JR just lost another fumble, I’m in tears now. This is surreal. Raiders coming unglued, just got another personal foul penalty and the Giants just kicked a field goal. Must we really play the 2nd half? If this was a fight, the refs would have stopped it by now.

  95. pirate1 Says:

Halftime, please let me summarize. NO PASS COVERAGE, NO SACKS, NO BLOCKING, NO TACKLING, DREADFUL PASSING, NO RUSH, NO SHOW FOR RAIDERS THUS FAR. IN A WORD, HORRIBLE!!!
