Back among the living

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, October 12th, 2009 at 9:26 am in Oakland Raiders.

At the risk of imparting too much information, I hadn’t thrown up in in 10 years but puked as many times Sunday as the Raiders had first downs.

Only a coincidence, I’m sure.

Before determining that sitting upright and attempting to keep track of a 44-7 loss to the Giants was not going to be possible, the game was already well in hand for New York.

At one point I fell asleep when it was 31-7 and woke up to find it 44-7, so your own assessments are better than mine for what ailed the Raiders.

Among the developments I missed out on Sunday was the first Randy Hanson interview since the alleged altercation with Tom Cable (to Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports), JaMarcus Russell conceding that he’d fibbed with regard to being fined for being overweight (he says he hasn’t missed any meetings) and a general tone well set by columnist Gary Peterson that the Raiders may have reached a low point in the history of the franchise.

So I guess Sunday was as good a day to be incapacitated as any.

Won’t be heading to Alameda today, but will check in later through the miracle of televised press conferences for a 1-4 team and perhaps a few locker room nuggets from group interviews from the open locker room session passed along by compassionate colleagues . . .

    This just in …

Jerry Mac was playing a drinking game yesterday where he had to do a shot of 151 rum every time the Giants scored a TD.

Needless to say he was in a coma by the time the 2nd half started. That’s why the updates mysteriously stopped.

    Say a prayer.

    Hire Jim Fassel.

  17. RaidingTexas Says:

Fire Cable and then what? Promote an assistant who can’t find a job anywhere else in the league to become head coach of a bunch of practice squad-quality players?

Some of you just don’t get it. Firing the coach is not the solution. It wasn’t for the previous four coaches. Why would it be now?

  18. Raider O Says:

    Good Morning 4eva.
I never imagined that football can be so hard!! It’s harder that rocket science!
Who do we put 7 men in the front, but still stop the run, and rush the passer?
How do you pass, and how do you run?
How do you do this thing called Blocking!!

    FU Cable!

  19. Raider O Says:

Who ever we promote can’t be worse than Cable.

    405,

Is jerry your life partner, why do you care?

    lmao!!!

  22. Chris in NY Says:

I’m shocked that the Eagles are only 14 point favorites for next week’s game in Oakland. I predicted 21 point favorites with a chance to rise as high as 24 before kickoff.

Want to double your money? Get your bets in now on Philly. And that line definitely shoots up to at least 17 in the next few days.

  23. Raider O Says:

    TDs:

JaMeatball is so locked on his man he cant see or feel anybody coming. If we had the best O-line in football it wouldn’t make much difference. He is dumb, slow, not prepared, overweight.

Its just horrible and it starts and end with the Qb & the coach. If you let him play it sends a message to the team that they tolerate garbage. If you sit him he wont get any better. Hence the team quit after week 1.
    =================================================

Once again, a very dumb post by a very dumb person. Russell is NOT SUPPOSED to see the rush coming. He has been taught at EVERY level to be looking downfield. And if he was locked onto just one receiver all the time, his interception ratios would be much higher. The offensive line got manhandled yesterday by the Giants. THAT’S what happened. The only way he is going to feel the rush, is by playing. Getting rid of the coach and the QB is not going to solve anything. moron. And Peter King has no idea what it’s like to be a QB either.

    ============
This is why you get laughed at and ridiculed across the board, OakDork. QB’s are taught pocket awareness FROM THE START. Sacks and turnovers kill drives, and no coach worth a penny (sorry Cable, leaves you out) does what you say. Who in the hell teaches a qb ‘TO LOOK DOWNFIELD’. No, you idiot, YOU GO THROUGH YOUR READS. You checkdown. You make sure you don’t lose the ball/take a sack. Russell locks on so tight, he didn’t even GLANCE anywhere, even though it was obvious the pressure was there.
And NO, YOU IDIOT..it’s not locking on a receiver that causes picks, it’s that even when he does THE BALL ISN’T EVEN CLOSE TO THE RECEIVER. It’s not close to anyone..over EVERYONE’S HEAD means no one gets it..bouncing the ball 5 feet in front? No one gets it. Out of bounds? No one gets it.
    Like you not getting it.

Ok, now is when you concede what I just said by posting some silly whimper..oh..and toss in something about the Niners while you’re at it. Maybe everyone won’t notice you just got your ass handed to you…again.

  27. Chris in NY Says:

I was listening to part of the game on the radio when I had to run out yesterday. At one point the announcer called a play as follows:

“Fargas takes the handoff running right, and … runs right into his own teammate and falls down. Fargas runs right into the right tackle Pears on the play for a loss of 1.”

Sadly, I was not at all surprised.

  28. Raider-405 Says:

We can blame this, that and whatever.

The blame is SOLELY on the shoulders of Al Davis.

    Couple things to consider….

WHY can Felix Jones – (who backed up McFadden and Arkansas) return kicks, but not McFadden? Shoot, get your money out of DHB and let him return kicks. What is the risk? injury vs 20m+ guaranteed??

WHY have we not seen any changes on the Defensive side of the ball in 7 years?
Marshall… Ryan, same scheme, same results.

Thanks Al. YOU have put this franchise out to pasture.

Advise Al… if you want to see a team over .500 before you pass away, bring in someone like Bill Cowher and had the keys over.
Until then, the only competition will be the bottom feeders competing for top draft picks.

  29. Raider O Says:

Back to the important issues: has Cable been fired yet?
Atleast take the play calling away from him!

  30. the510 Says:

Jerry … that was a great day to take off. I have to agree with Peterson’s column … it has NEVER been so bleak. I’ve held out for years, but it’s evident Al simply has to go. Somewhere in the world there is a UFL team more deserving of a slot in the NFL that this embarrassment of a franchise. At the owners meetings, doesn’t anyone have the cojones to tell the old man he’s wetting his pants at a crowded party?!

  31. Charlie Says:

For those of you who say that Mr Davis will not draft lineman with our first two draft selections please see the analysis below:

Since 1963 the Raiders have drafted 36 lineman with either their first or second round pick in the draft.

Taking a look on a percentage basis only 20% of our first or second round selections since 2000 have been dedicated to lineman.
THIS IS THE LOWEST TOTAL DURING ANY PERIOD OF TIME IN RAIDERS HISTORY.

Contrast that with 70% of our first and second round picks from 1995-1999 being dedicated to lineman.
(Though certainly Gannon etc. were instrumental, this line focus also helped us in building those teams leading to the 2002 superbowl.)

Other time frames and the percentage of first and second round picks dedicated to lineman:

    1990-1994 40%
    1980-1989 53%
    1970-1979 33%
    1964-1969 50%

I understand that we have had misses on lineman in the past but my point is that a draft focus on the line is instrumental in building a competitive team.
Since 2000 we have lost that focus.

    ————————————————-
I used to be a Cable supporter, but I realize now that he is in over his head. He is not capable of being the head coach. The game is too complex and he is too simple. I was a Al Davis supporter. The game is too sophisticated for his brand of ball. I respect AD but his time has passed.

  35. 2romes Says:

Cable said “U are retarded if U take out DHB”, as a starter.I support the Ideal of playing DHB, but I do not believe he earned the starting job.The primary job for the wide receiver is to get open and catch the ball.DHB has has struggled considerably with both of these task. Now, compound all the struggles J.Russell is having to get the ball were it needs to be and U concoct a team with the worst offense in the NFL.The Raiders have two key players failing to expedite their game and what’s funny about that is the Raiders expect to be competitve with this mindset.Do the Raiders expect the rest of the NFL to wait for them while they develop into good players. If U want players to play that don’t have good hand yet,get the ball in his hands by other means, if they don’t run good routes run pic plays to get them open. Be creative. Don’t treat every player the same.
The point is, money does not make every player great. We all fine this out time over time that big time players can make a modest pay check, while big time money maker play modestly.I Know big time money was spent on him but has he really earned the starting job?

  43. Raider75 Says:

There is more to coaching than ra-ra emotions and expecting to win 1 on 1 matchups no matter what plays are ran.

Coaching is about finding and exploiting weaknesses on the other side of the ball by putting together a scheme that places your players in the best spot to be effective.

Al Davis, and therefore Cable, seem to think that none of that matters. They think they can run vanilla schemes and simply beat the man in front of you.

That is why the Raiders suck.

The last coach the Raiders had who actually studied other teams and developed a scheme that matched his personnel was Gruden.

Imagine that. He is also the last coach to develop a winning team in Oakland.

Al Davis only cares about winning if its done on his terms and he can’t face the fact that his way of doing things just won’t work.

Yeah, that’s very telling. They don’t play their best players. They keep trying what doesn’t work. They don’t adjust any philosophy. It’s kinda stupid. Reminds me of a simpsons episode where Lisa’s trying to see who’s smarter a hampster or Bart her brother. She takes a muffin and electrifies it. Hampster does it, gets electricuted, finds another way. Bart keeps going to the muffin and keeps getting zapped over and over. Never learn.

If something’s not working TRY SOMETHING ELSE!!! DHB gets 0 catches many games, start someone else. Fargas keeps getting 0 yards per carry, don’t keep playing him. Play who’s effective, not who’s popular or paid the most.

    ==================
I agree. Actually wasn’t saying he didn’t. OakDork stated he’s “not SUPPOSED to see the rush coming. Taught at every level to look downfield”

I think it’s exactly what you stated..he’s oblivious to what’s going on around him. He’s incapable of “multi-tasking” (I.E. thinking on his feet).

Because of that the likely relief of getting Russell out of there will only come from an injury. Al won’t pull the plug, and Cable doesn’t know where the plug is.

  54. JB Says:

Given the fact that our current O-Line is totally inadequate AND the fact that Cable’s firing is soon to happen (by the BYE week), it’s a good time to trash the ZBS and get back t Power smash mouth blocking. Cable should be arraigned for the Hanson caper by the BYE week. Tghat will be what AD’s been waiting for so he can fire for cause and obviate having to pay the contracted salary. Back to the O-Line. Hendersen & Gallery can play the Power smash-mouth technique. The rest I doubt will survive. That means we need at least 7 new OL to fill the vacant starter spots (i.e. C, RG, RT) and back-up positions. That means 2 C’s, 3 OT’s & 2 OG’s. On top of that we’ll need a DT & MLB. What are the odds that AD will use our picks on that grouping? How about zero? Enough said about personnel.

Coaching is a known weak spot. What can we realistically hope for you might ask. My answer is that there is only one real NFL quality HC that might even consider us and thgat is Gruden. He knows how to work AD and we’ll get the best bang for the buck from CHUCKIE. The only question is will he give us another shot? IK really don’t know.

    Time to drop some knowledge.

For those of you who say the schemes we run are old and outdated and Al Davis doesn’t recognize modern day football.

Shut up, sit down and listen.

Do you realize that the offense the Giants run is almost a mirror image of ours. Do you realise that the offensive Coordinator was inche away from being our HC Kevin Gilbride was second choice and we keptCable based solely on continuity. Which a lot of us in her were in favor of and also the star corner for this team.

Do you realize that the defensive system the Giants run is also almost a mirror image of our own scheme. A 4/3 which relies heavily on the front4 and rarely ever blitzes. They also play a lot of man mixed with zone in certain situations.

Do you alo realise that thestar QB they have ad the HC was inches sho of being ran out of town just weeks before the won the SB. The star QB being reemed in the local papers as a major BUST!! The HC was being reemed for having LOST the team. A star RB that retired blasted the entire team and QB as having a lack of leadership. He said the QB would never amount to more than just a average QB.

FF to this date the same is being said about this team here in Oakland. I’m not at all predicting anything what so ever I’m simply drawing a comparison.

Now the NYG are the classs of the league but at that point their Oline was average at best. With a looose cannon as a star WR. And a defense trying to find itself.

I just found all this very interesting. These teams are very simular and the Raiders talent wise is very similar to what the Giants were at that time. If theOline can some how get heathy and the star in the making WR (Chaz) can cme back andbe who he was prior t injury and the coach figures out that he has an emmense talent at HB (Bush). The second half of this season could be very interesting.

But a lot needs to happen for any of that to be possible.

When he left we were a strong winning team. When he left the Bucs I agree that they had problems but they were an old team. He may leave something to be desired but as compared to Cable? Get real. We need Chuckie and Bruce Allen back.

At least we know that with Chuckie, the players would b getting an ear-full on a regular basis. He didn’t pull punches and wasn’t afraid to call people out. JR would either play the way he should or he’d be benched. Enough with Cables positive reinforcement approach. W need some ass-kicking going on in there. Dude, almost doesn’t mean equal. Al doesn’t even allow almost, he wants 100% of his scheme used. U r crazy to compare Eli to Jamarcus or their defense with top DL, LB to our bums. Giants have given Eli everything he needed, Al kept getting track stars. I think u should sit down n listen. Al ruined this team.

Deep within the bowels of the Legion of Doom (Oakland Raiders Headquarters – Alameda, CA), the Supreme Commander of the Silver & Black ponders the catastrophe that is the 2009 season.

The Dark One wonders if the season can be salvaged and if the Land of Oak can be left behind for the pristine, fortified walls of a new fortress being built in the City of Angels.

Meanwhile, Tom Cable, The Supreme Commander’s minion, has arrived for his weekly meeting and dreads being terminated from his position and sent to the dregs of the UFL.

Al: Dammit, Tim, what happened to the gameplan we discussed?

Cable: Well, actually Mr. Davis, I, uh, followed it to a T. Seven step drop, go deep, four man pressure on the opposition’s quarterback.

Al: Curses, Ted, don’t you realize that when I tell you to do something, you disregard it, install a scheme and gameplan that makes sense and win despite me, only to have your contract traded in the off-season and have a shot at a contender with a real front office?

    Cable: Sir, I don’t think –

Al: Never mind, you’re too feeble minded to understand. We’re making a change at quarterback. Herrera!!

Herrera: Mr. Davis, I’m standing right behind you.

Al: I know that fool, I just felt like screaming at someone. Get Jeff George on the line. Now that’s an athlete. I can spot them just by looking, you know. Guy throws on a rope. Anyone have anything on his 40 time? Sure it hasn’t changed too much since 98. That was only, what, 2, 3 seasons ago? Why we ever benched him I’ll never figure out.

Cable: Thank God, because I’ve been wanting to bench Russell for weeks, although –

Al: Bench him? I might as well promote him to head coach, seeing as how incompetent you are. No, of course not. JaMarcus is a great player. I want George as our #2 guy. To serve as a mentor of sorts. His kind of pride and poise and commitment to excellence will surely rub off on Russell. I’m telling you, that kid’s the next LaMonica! After watching his combine tape, Herrera here had to change me twice!

Cable: (sigh) Sir, I think I’m losing my grip on this team. It’s obvious they’re quitting out there. Apparently Merriman is on the trade block and I strongly recommend we take a look at hi-

Al: Merriman? Ha! Not a superior athlete. Haven’t you seen his 40 time? It’s a disgrace to athletes. Of course you know I can spot them just by looking at them. Absolutely not. Promote that kid from the practice squad – the DB – tell him to put on 30 pounds and get ready to suit up as our 3rd down pass rusher, I’m converting him to defensive end.

Cable: Mr. Davis, I can’t sit idly by while you drive this team into the ground. I feel like hitting somebody right now.

    Later at the press conference:

Cable: This team is right there, people. Write whatever you want, but we’re about to turn this thing around.

Reporter: Tom, I just got a Twitter update from Adam Schefter saying Al Davis has replaced you with Art Shell. Reported he’s to run the Bed & Breakfast offense.

Cable: That’s nonsense. More media bias against the Raiders.

Mike Taylor sheepishly walks toward Cable and whispers something in his ear.

    Cable: WHAT?!!!!

Cable throws his chair into the crowd, breaking Tim Kawakami’s face. He then strikes Taylor in the jaw and has to be restrained by club security and is escorted out of the building where he sees Rich Gannon at the bus stop, eating and apple and reading the paper.

    Gannon: Told ya so.

    ————————————————

As usual, rack-ette embarrasses herself by her lack of any type of knowledge. What the hell do you think looking downfield means?? You think he’s looking downfield at the cheer leaders??? Rack-ette you are an embarrassment to yourself. As for the rest of you, you cannot teach pocket awareness. It is something that DEVELOPS!!! It is part of DEVELOPING a player!!! The game speeds up between college and pro levels. This is one aspect of that along with timing, reading defenses, checking out of plays, making certain throws. This is why QB’s normally take a while to develop. As for poor rack-ette, she obviously was the last one chosen on her block when the kids played sports.

THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I’M SAYING!!! Firing Cable doesn’t change the fact that you still have dysfunction at the very top of the organization – dysfunction that has resulted in poor coaches, poor draft picks, poor trades, etc. Inserting another coach right now will just produce the same results as Cable.
    =====================================================
Most fans are right there with you. If not for the season ticket holders you would see an embarrassing turnout for the next game. Heck, it may still be embarrassing.

There are only a few Davis apologists out there blaming the coaches, players, etc. with blatant disregard to the man who hires these coaches and drafts these players. The team is a reflection of the owner. Whether the apologists like it or not. This isn’t a point that can be argued. And those that do will never get it, so don’t bother.

Did Jeff Fisher lose his football knowledge this year?

Schemes are only as good as the players that execute them.
Cable can only run what his Oline can handle which is obviously not much.

Players are 80% of the team with coaches and schemes only making a difference when you are competitive.
We do not have the talent where we need it. On the line of scrimmage.

Why can’t Asmough openly call out slackers, why can’t Al end up selling this team

  90. Bobby Bushay Says:

Was At The Game Yesterday (ugh!)… I know that many of you are able to go to each home game. Living in Ohio, I usually get to a game each year without outside distractions, etc. – I go to observe in the sincerest form. Things that I noticed in no particular order were: DHB was out early pregame catching (yes, catching) passes from staff… However, DHB was hardly turning back to JaMarcus when a sack was occurring. it appears that Cable is true to his word – he’s a “go route” receiver on most all plays. It appears his other route is a slant… OL gave little to no pass protection, and very little in the run game. It appeared that Henderson is our only stud presently playing (Gallery)… Russell doesn’t look fat to me or my unbiased friend who is a Bengals’ fan. I thought #2 would be “Fat Albert” in person the way most of you speak on here… He needs to show a sense of urgency. His body language shows he has no confidence in what the offense is doing or components of it. He looks great rolling out. They need to build the offense around his mobility as he seems to play with more intensity on the roll (no, not the JELLY roll)… Tommy Kelly is hurt – stretched out by trainer before the game and could hardly move onto or off of the field during it – I’m thinking groin pull… Gerard Warren showed emotion, did not see this with any other player outwardly… players definitely going through the motions – where is the intensity?… I think the teams take on their coaches demeanor – something NOT prevalent on this team – case in point – NY Giants had a personal foul on an OL-man in the first half. Coughlin was LIVID. He went half way out on the field and was giving the penalized player the business. He was active throughout the game with his players. On the other hand, Cable “appears” to be Art Shell part II. Hand claps the players off of the field after D gave up the 3rd TD or the O after their 3rd straight 3 and out… Don’t see the players together much if not called together by the coaches. QBs stay to themselves as does WRs and RBs, etc. Greg Ellis seemed interested in watching/supporting the offense during the 1st quarter. Cable needs to work on this aspect… Holland is lost as a return specialist. I watched him during warm-ups, and we have a serious problem without a proven returner… Offense had TE Stewart motion far out as a WR at least three times. Boy did that confuse the Giants – not!… JLH’s well enough to return punts but not healthy enough to replace Watkins as the 3rd receiver? This stinks and is “fishy”…Defense played single deep safety most of the downs – not a lot of different looks or changing looks before the snap. Just line up and hope to beat your man and not give up TOO many yards… Did I mention there is no emotion or seemingly pride? Give me the Charger game intensity from the opener, and I think we would be competing a whole lot better…Sorry that this was long, but from what few peeks at the TV I see of the bench each week was validated from my 3rd tier seats behind the Raider bench. I watch our bench and the Giants bench – with the talent levels so “close”, there is no doubt about it – coaching is FAR more important than it was during the Raiders’ glory years – when talent truly wasn’t on an even playing field. Good teams have coaches who have to motivate, teach, organize, inspire, give a sense of urgency, and step on a few toes to get the job done. I didn’t see any of this during the game. Perhaps Cable can become this type of leader – in short, he should. What ails this team is a combination of many things, not just one. Intensity and urgency would be a step in the right direction – the coach and coaches need to step it up. Football is a war. Forget the coddling…

Firing Cable won’t fix the problem. He may not be the answer, but he isn’t the problem. I don’t know if Russel will ever make a good QB with the way he stares down receivers and seems to have no field vision for anything else going on the field. That is part of his fumbling problem. He doesn’t see the pass rush as well as any other receivers other than the one he is intending to throw to. In spite of all that, it isn’t his fault the defense game up touchdowns on the first four Giant possessions. I really expected the defense to at least put up a fight. I don’t even know why the defense is so hapless. They are not getting run over like they did last year. They just are not making plays to stop drives. I hope Marshall can put his finger on what is wrong with the defense, because I can’t.

I was really impressed with Mitchell on the goaline as well. Totally cracked Jacobs in the grill on that 3rd down play. 1-4 with three terrible losses in a row. Hiram Eugene is not a big reason this team is so bad right now, but it’s time to see what Mitchell can do, see if he can be a difference maker on defense.

I’d leave Branch at SS since that requires a lot of man coverage on the tight end and play Mitchell at FS and just let him roam around the secondary and blast people all over the field. What do you have to lose at this point?

Of course, Cable is the same guy who started Kwame Harris over Mario last season until Week 15 and continues to let Fargas run the ball as much as anyone else in the backfield, so don’t expect many smart personnel decisions from that guy anytime soon.

i know gruden will never be with raiders again but if he was russell would be way better gruden is a qb guy he would have russell in shape and reading everything but just like al won’t give up the raiders soon we will never have gruden and russell will never be good, but they still invested too much in him so they have to go with him,.

    ———————————————————-

I think I disagree with everything you say. Your support of Russell and love of him is quite obvious as you continue to defend the fraud in every remark you make. However, your last comment is just complete idiocy.

If you think for one solitary second that Jon Gruden would put up with JaFraud’s fat azz you are either ugly or crazy, or probably both. Gruden would have benched this fat azz QB in the pre-season. You are a moron.

Always respected Al, but seriously, QB change, coach change… on and on and its the same thing, nothing changes.

Imagine if you were a stock holder, would you want the CEO to bleed cash and not turn things around season after season and still retain him?

    I thought not.

  116. raideralex99 Says:

LOL … Russell WILL NOT be good on any team PERIOD.
The first drive … he lockes on a WR down the field and misses Zach standing in front of him 10 yds down the field with NO ONE around him.

If JaMarcus played in NY he would have been run of out town already. The NY media is very hard on players … they will chase you out … here everyone is making excuses for JaMarcus … I think I heard over 1001 excuses already and I’m sick of them.

After a great defensive performance in beating the Chiefs … the team went down hill … the players have stopped playing because of JaMarcus … he should have been benched.

  117. djohnnyg Says:

We all agree that maintaining his ‘legacy’ is of utmost importance to Al Davis, right? Here’s how he does it. He washes his hands of this whole damn mess by FINALLY turning it over to a GM and announces he is “turning over the reigns”. Now, if the Raiders continue to suck, Al can blame it on the guys he turned it over to, and say “see, i told you what would happen if I went away”. Now if the Raiders actually start resembling a competitive NFL franchise after this move, then Al can take credit by saying it was his “genius” that he was just waiting for the “right guy” to take over and return the Raiders to greatness. And “now that I am able to step back and concentrate on the big picture, we are winning again”.

-Al now has a scapegoat for ruining the “great Raider tradition” etc. (He will also want everyone to forget the past 7 seasons by the way, but oh well.)

-Al get’s to protect his “legacy” by putting a time stamp on his departure, thereby stopping the bleeding in so far as his direct connection to Raider futility.

..In other words “get out now”, while he still has a winning record and while people still remember the “great things” he’s done for the Riders and the NFL.

  118. big chill Says:

he would of never been a fat azz sorry azz qb if gruden was here in the first place and if he did suck yes gruden would of benched him but if gruden had the time with him it would not be like this but since all this was just a hypothetical come your sorry azzz down it’s not reality, i’m just saying the invested 60 mil in this guy you can’t just throw that away, if that was your money do you think you would throw that away, no what i would do is get some big azzz mofo’s to follow him around and whip him in shape make him accountable always be watching and if he simply can’t get better then you take the loss and kept garcia’s sorry azz.

  119. CaptainBlack Says:

Also, as icing on the cake, if you must go to the game, wear a bag over your head and write raiduhhs across the front of the bag so it can be seen on TV. Humiliate this organization which Al has destroyed.

Please look at the Bengals … last year year without their #1 pick QB Carson Palmer … they only won one game in their first 12 games. This year with a healthy Palmer … they are in first place with a 4-1 record and should actually be 5-0. It’s basically the same team minus a pro-bowl WR … so I guess a good QB can actually make or break the team.

  123. halster Says:

Raideralex99, As bad as Jamarcus looks, neither Gruden or any top notch
GM would have set him or any QB up for failure with inadequate O-Line
personnel and blockng scemes. No good team drafts or trades from the top down. The lack of O-Line building from the bottom up has been a Raider handicap for years. That’s why the Randy Moss move was a bust from the beginning

  124. Raider25 Says:

If Gruden was here he wouldn’t have a choice but to draft Russel. Do you realy think a coach has that much power, even Gruden??? Why isn’t Gruden stil here if he had that much control and power?

  125. TiredFan Says:

Why does everyone wanna bench Jamarcus? What good would come out of it? This isn’t high school football. If he needs to be benched to be motivated then he shouldn’t be on the team in the first place. If its for “set an example” purposes then the other guys shouldn’t be there either. These are grown men making millions of dollars. Benching anyone isn’t going to make any difference.

These guys are all young behind probably THE WORST offensive line in the NFL. No need to start benching skill players. Someone mentioned rebuilding the line. Smartest thing I’ve read on here in two days. Keep the coach and the quarterback. Let them get their arses handed to them this year and put them behind a decent line next year. If motivation is the problem then everyone will know this off season and those guys will hopefully be dealt with.

Everyone talks about the talent so maybe its not so much the players. I don’t know.

You have to admire Al’s commitment and desire to win but you have to question everything else. For those of you with hope that he will change his philosophy don’t know much about old people who have experienced success.

There is talent on this team BUT, without a game plan it goes down the tubes. They are running basic football plays on offense and still can’t execute. On defense they are vanilla and can’t get off the field. Special teams can’t get a return going either. The coaches have to put the team in a position to succeed , I don’t see that. I see forced throws and bad routes and bad down and distance situations. Since the Charger game it looks like they don’t belong on the same field with any NFL team. That said I will not boycott or wear a bag over my head. I root for the Raiders because they’re my team not because they are in first place. Which seems like an eternity.

So true! Gruden should be here. We’d be talking about a team with 4 Super Bowls right now, maybe a 5th? The day that trade went down continues to be the worst day in Raider fan history. Give me Gruden, and his West Coast offense with his fiery personality and a competitive team any day over this mess. Probably would have never worked though. Knowing Davis, the relationship was bound to sour if not then, then later. Especially when Russell’s fat azz came along.

Fire Cable and then what? Promote an assistant who can’t find a job anywhere else in the league to become head coach of a bunch of practice squad-quality players?

Some of you just don’t get it. Firing the coach is not the solution. It wasn’t for the previous four coaches. Why would it be now?

    ………..

I could agree with that. And I was nearly sold on Cable the first two weeks. But everything he’s done since… I just don’t trust these coaches that are willing to bend for Al. True, replacing Cable with another puppet won’t work. But replacing him with a junior Al Davis type like Lane Kiffin or Gruden will bring some kind of result. Somebody here said once that they’d rather have a coach who works with Al than someone who fights with him. I say just the opposite! In recent memory, this franchise’s best years came Davis and his HC butting heads. Tyrant owners need coaches with backbones to be the ying to their yang. Let ‘em fight. If it results in getting us back to the .500 mark and competing for a playoff spot in December, I’m all for it. Because we know what happens when we have a coach who bends for Al. Just go to NFL.com and check the current standings.

Big Bananana, Gruden would be the perfect hire. You know, it’s funny, but have you noticed that Gruden and Davis have been saying nothing but good things about each other recently? These two got a man crush going with each other. Davis doesn’t go any interview now without pointing out that he wanted Gruden over Belichick in ‘98, while B. Allen wanted Bilichick. I’ve got no delusions as to how it will end up. These two will be butting heads before draft day. But one season with Chucky would be better than 2 seasons with another run of the mill puppet.

  136. CJ Legend 34 Says:

Look at Cable’s coaching record (he sucks!). I am with Big Mouth sap on this one. This clown could not lead his team to a picnic! Before this site keeps jumping all over Russel and fat @$$ Cable to the mix as well. At least Russel did not blind side a coach, break his jaw, and try to kill a guy!

Most are jaded Raider fans, some just lost and disillusioned, reaching out for something – anything – to make sense anymore. The once-proud army of the Silver & Black has been vanquished by inferior athletes with slower 40 times four times already this season, and only five games in.

Away from the gathering media horde, two stealthy figures are waiting for their moment to strike.

Gannon: OK, Tom, you got the ski masks, right?

Cable: Uh, they were all out at Big 5. I guess snowboard season’s coming up, so all those punk kids cleaned ‘em out. I got these though, which I think will work just as well.

Gannon: Are those what I think they are?

Cable: Yes, Denny Green, they are what you think they are. So you wanna be Hillary or Barrack?

Gannon: Do I look like I want to make a total fool of myself? Hillary, of course.

Cable: I have face paint too, in case we want to look intimidating.

Gannon: We’re two grown men dressing up in masks ready to break into our former boss’s office, Tom. I don’t think we’re in danger of intimidating anyone.

Cable: Suit yourself, Rich – I’m rockin’ the war paint.

    Gannon: Is that mascara?

Cable: Yah, my wife left some behind when she packed up her stuff. Stop looking at me like that. What’s the count?

Gannon: Hard count, baby – on three, OK?

Cable and Gannon (unison): Ready, break!

    Gannon: One….two….three!

Former Raider head coach Tom Cable and his sidekick, former Raider All Pro Rich Gannon come flying out of a tinted vehicle, almost as if in slow motion. Some of the growing mob see them as the second coming of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. For those over age 12, Cable and Gannon look like middle aged men playing dress up, complete with bandanas and fatigues, shouting their heads off, ready to storm Alameda HQ.

Some of you guy’s that are of the opinion that Mr Davis is stapped for cash need a clue. If you had any idea about the TV money alone you’d ignore al this madness. These teams are insulated from ever being cash strapped. He may not make what most owners make and may be at the bottom rung. But if he didn’t sell another garment or ticket it would take long after he’s dead to be cash strapped.

    ==============
This is just ONE of the many reasons you’re viewed as being slow.
    Let me help.
There is a VERY GOOD REASON that teams state they need bigger stadiums and more luxury suites in order to compete with other teams who bring in the big bucks.
Even your simpleton mind can do the simple math of 75,000 seats revenue, times 10, times $75.00 average PLUS the hundreds of thousands luxury boxes bring in, compared to 45,000, times 10, times $50.00 average, with almost no revenue from suites.
Oh, I’m sorry, that was too confusing for you.

Ok, try this. Home team gets half of ticket sales. Opposing team gets other half.

    Oh..damn..ok..forget. It’s you.
    Alright. Try this.
75,000 @100.00 seat means teams split $7,500,000 for the game.
45,000 @$50.00 means teams split $2,250,000. Add in luxury suite bucks, which Davis has always had problems selling, and it’s WHY TEAMS ARE PUSHING FOR BIGGER STADIUMS.

Damn..it’s amazing you can’t figure that simple thing out. I mean, according to you, ticket sales means squat..just get the tv revenue, right? lol..moron.

Ok, here’s your homework. Why did Al sell the chunk he did recently?
    Come on..you can do it…

  182. dirtyraider Says:

Halster…you have it right. If I lived in the Bay area, I would be the first on the pickett line with signs insisting that no one pay for another Raider game until we have a decent product to put on the field. That will not happen until AD is gone. I would love to see the league step in and oust him. He has ruined the Raider image, and who suffers the most….us the fans. I can’t even tell you how embarrassing I feel to be a Raider fan. And yet I am….and will die and be buried in a silver and black casket. But I am a realist and the Raiders will not turn around until one of two things happen: either (1) Al admits that he needs a GM and hands the keys over to someone and let him make the decisions going forward (Holmgreen as a GM who hires his own coach, or Cowher as a GM/coach would be great). The only way we will get a respectable coach is if Al makes it known that he is taking his hands off, leaving the football stuff to the coach alone. The coach must be able to run the team as he sees fit. (2) Al kicks the bucket….Sorry to say it, but it is true. And ya know what I aint close to 80 years old, so I am set to hunker down and wait AL out.

  183. raideredoutL.A. Says:

how did we end up back in 2006?

  184. Chris in NY Says:

Cable is now 5-12 with the Raiders, which is definitely very bad and that’s on top of his 4-20 record at the U (of Idaho).

But what stands out more to me is that of Cable’s 12 losses, 8 have been completely non-competitive blowouts:

    2008
    - Saints 34, Raiders 3
    - Ravens 29, Raiders 10 (wasn’t even that close)
    - Falcons 24, Raiders 0
    - Chargers 34, Raiders 7
    - Patriots 49, Raiders 26 (game was well out of hand before some window dressing TDs by Oakland)

    2009
    - Broncos 23, Raiders 3 (wasn’t even that close)
    - Texans 29, Raiders 6
    - Giants 44, Raiders 7 (could’ve been 100-7 if the Giants for some reason wanted to do that)

And on top of that we’ve now been completely obliterated for 3 straight weeks.

The guy has been completely blown out of the water in half the games he’s been head coach. I know the Raiders sucked long before he took over, but what is he doing to change anything?

    Hire Jim Fassel.

  185. Noshadowking Says:

Yeah I think Cable is going to get the axe as soon as Davis has a reason to fire him which will be when the after effects come out from the Hanson incident but I hate to say it theres still no hope. Unless Davis breaks down and runs things right our team is doomed

  186. Chris in NY Says:

RAIDERS’ BLOWOUT LOSSES OF 20+ POINTS:

Under Tom Cable (17 games): 7

  191. KoolKell Says:

    Gate Split

When the teams play, there is a “gate,” the money people pay for seats. This is in the neighborhood of about $2.5M per game. This money is split 60-40, with the visiting team getting 40% of the gate. Because of this teams like Jacksonville and Arizona just love it when the Packers or Cowboys come to play. These are the two or three games each year these teams can count on selling out, and the money they get is very welcome. Sometimes you will find that to buy a ticket to see the Packers on the road you have to buy a package of two or three tickets. This is nothing more or less than a device to get money from Packers fans into the pockets of the other teams owners.

  192. DirtyBathWater Says:

I agree Raider 75!! He has to go. I’ve been in support of Russell but its all gone now! He needs to be benched, put in Charlie frye and lets roll. He don’t care about the game of football. He got his money and that’s all he cares about. We need a guy who will consume the game and put in the hard work that’s needed to steer this ship in the right direction. This season isn’t lost yet, Cable will have to have a damn gut check and pull this guy b4 its too late! At least try and salvage this season man good God give us something we can actually root for. Don’t give us this “break through”, or “we’re getting close” crap! Pull the guys that’s not playing up to par, and that’s Russell and DHB

  193. raiderrej Says:

is cable even qualified to coach a professional team? only Al Davis… only Al Davis!

  194. tazZraider Says:

Dungy to Vick: Don’t go to Oakland

Tony Dungy said Sunday night on NBC that he advised Michael Vick not to sign with the Oakland Raiders before he inked a deal with the Eagles.

“I advised Michael Vick not to go there,” Dungy said. “I said, ‘Mike, you might be able to start there but that is not a good place for you.’”

It is unclear if the Raiders made a pitch to Vick. But if Dungy advised Vick against Oakland, there had to be some interest. Very intriguing.

Dungy went on to say Al Davis has to give up control of the 1-4 Raiders for the team to turn around their fortunes.

“It starts with the organization and Al Davis needs to cede this over to someone else,” Dungy said. “Every coach that has been there has felt that they have been hamstrung a little bit (by ownership).”

Dungy he doesn’t see a top-flight head coach ever going to Oakland under the current situation.

“I don’t think they will unless you can get total autonomy and I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Dungy said.

    enough said and 100% correct.

  195. DT42 Says:

    Enough is enough.

  196. KoolKell Says:

The newer stadiums have large box seats which are leased to corporations. This money is not currently shared, which gives individual teams a big incentive to get a new stadium with fewer normal seats and more corporate seats.

Finally, a well designed stadium can bring in other money for events like concerts, weddings, a pro shop, and the sale of $12 hot dogs. This money is not shared, again giving teams a huge incentive for a new stadium. The Packer’s stadium is a model of efficiency, and does a league-leading job of extracting money from the local residents. If Green Bay were in the Spy / Defense / Government business like Washington, or the oil business like Dallas, the Packers would almost certainly lead the league in revenue. In fact Green Bay makes placemats, napkins and toilet paper, so the Packers are about #12 in the league in revenue.

  197. tazZraider Says:

Then let’s see if effort and work ethic changes!

At least he used to get jazzed up, and he is a leader. We are going to have yet another high draft pick next year. Hope we trade it away and get lots of picks. We need to concentrate on the O-line and get some decent linebackers. Ours just over run plays. Pothetic.

My entire family are diehard Browns fans. I defected to the dark side of the force when I was about seven or eight, in the late seventies. I’ve stuck with this team through good years and bad, but this season is testing my patience. I’m losing hope.I was stoked when the Raiders were scheduled to play in Cleveland. Hoping for about week 5 or 6. nice autumn day for football. My wife and I were making plans with some other couples, make a weekend out of it. Take in rock and roll hall of fame. Saturday night in the flats. Great time, right? Nooo. should of known better. Official schedule comes out in April…Week 15, two days after Christmas. Not sure if I’m up for 5 hour drive to freeze my ass off and watch this team play an atrocious game vs. Cleveland. Wanted to represent the Nation. Probably just stay home and watch Sunday ticket.

The league needs to step in and have Big Al declared unfit to represent the NFL
in his capacity to promote the interests of the Raiders and the league. Al is ruining the image of the team and the fan base that represents revenue to the league and the other Raider ownership partners. He running the team into the ground. May I suggest that those fans that still show up for future home games protest at the games with paper bag burkas and home made signs letting the “Genius ” and the rest of the ” Gang of Three ” know that as Raider fans we are as mad as hell and we’re not spending anymore till Al is removed by the NFL as an incompetant manager of a once proud organization. People, wake the hell up and stop trying figure this out. It is waste of time untill All is gone and there is a chance for competant leadership. It is a mess that can’t be resolved untill Al is out of the way.

LMFAO..”ruining the image of the team”??
uh…ClownBoy? For decades Al tried to impose an “image” silly and sorry that it was. His distain for the league, other teams, AND HIS OWN FANS has him playing the “me against the world” hermit bit to the hilt.
The Raiders, ClownBoy, have led the league for OVER TEN YEARS in blacked out games. Yes, the opposing team suffers sharing in the revenue for the 8 home games, but the league as a whole isn’t affected.
You’re new at this, aren’t you?

And “the image of the fanbase”?? LMFAO..what, exactly, would that image be? Besides, drunk, beligerent, incoherent, costume wearing fellow clowns who know very very little about the actual game of football, but have perfected the fine art of a manly “aarrrruuugh”?

NFL will NEVER interfere. The will spend umpteen millions in court, none of which can be recouped, because Al has zero cash flow.

Nope..much to the enjoyment of all the other owners, the Raiders are stuck with Al, and the other teams are STUCK WITH PENCILING IN A W EACH WEEK THEY PLAY THE RAIDERS.

Stop cutting and pasting immediately. This is a sure sign to all of us that you’re becoming more and more senile by the minute. Plus it’ll slow down your advancing arthritis.

Put down the hot pocket and step away from the microwave. Brian the Genital should’ve already replaced your microwave with a fake kiddie one from the Barbie dream kitchen collection, but he’s so gay you never know what he’ll do.

damm, rack of schitt… you can’t get one of your butt-buddies to do it???

  246. king and crenshaw Says:

The problem wth this team is the A.D. Football Inc. “Big Play or Bust” offense. Even though the Raiders look like the Giants in terms of offensive and defensive fronts, and even though the individual talent pool on the Raiders is probabaly deeper than the Giants, the Giants and the Raiders are worlds apart.

On Offense the Giants feature a patient rushing attack that emphasizes ball control and high percentage passing. They commit to pounding the rock and play the short to intermediate pass game to keep the linebackers and safeties from stacking the box. They don’t force the big play!!! They play within themselves, stay on the field and wear down the defense. It is a matter of simple probability that the longer the offense is on the field the higher likelihood of the splash play.

The Raider offense on the other hand is the classic AD Football “Big Play or Bust” scheme and features the low percentage “deep strike” play. If the offense does not see the “homerun” they don’t commit to the run, and since the 2nd game of the season seem to have abandoned the short higher percentage passing game, opting for the low percentage over the top, deep strike passing game. The play calling does not consider any ball control. Teams like the Giants eat that deep strike offense alive by selling out on the pass rush betting that they can get the QB before he can throw the ball. With no committed short passing game, the defense can focus on stopping the run and play in the offenses’ backfield with little concern for the underneath coverage. – Hence 41 net rushing yards 6 sacks and 3 lost fumbles.

The defense is also worlds apart, the Giants use the attacking 4-3 that blitzes often, the Raiders still use the four man rush and require each man to win his individual battle. The problem is that when the offense goes 3 and out and the defense is on the field as much as the Raider D they get worn out, lose focus, and give up the “Splash” play.

To compare Giant coaching to Raider coaching is like night and day. The advantage that the Giant coacching staff has over the Raider staff is almost unfair.

The Raiders are nothing like the Giants.

Gannon has to stop several times to sign autographs for adoring fans, reminiscing of his days as journeyman quarterback turned perennial Pro Bowler. Tom Cable has to stop several times and sign autographs for those who appreciated his work on ‘Rosanne.’

The fanfare has ended and the mission resumed.

Cable has slithered his way through a vent and into an airshaft, trying to penetrate the fortress unnoticed.

    Gannon: Uh, Tom?

    Cable: Yeah?

Gannon: Fred the security guard here remembers me from my playing days. He says he’ll just let us in the front door.

Cable: Don’t you think that will be less dramatic?

Cable: 10-4, Rich, let’s get this bastard!

    Gannon: Uh, yeah….thanks, Fred.

As the two enter the building, they notice it’s been turned into a virtual ghost town. The mounting chaos outside has driven all reasonable people from the facility. Which means Davis is sure to be here. The duo smells blood. Time to strike.

Gannon easily sidesteps his would-be attackers by delivering sidearm style blows to their heads and solar plexuses. Cable is intent on simply bludgeoning them with a balled up fist, breaking jaw after jaw like they were made of glass.

After all the assailants lie bruised and bleeding, strewn about the floor, Cable and Gannon look at each other and give the thumbs up.

Herrera (quivering): P-please don’t h-hurt me, guys. We were always tight. You know I was just taking orders from Mr. D-D-Davis. You know how that is.

    Cable: Infidel!

Cable unsheathes a ninja sword and slices Herrera’s head clean off and shouts to the heavens.

Gannon: Jesus Christ, man you didn’t have to kill him! F*ck, you cut the bastard’s head clean off. And where did you get that sword? You’re f*cking crazy, Tom.

Cable: Damn right, so don’t f*ck with me, Rich. Let’s get this pr*ck.

Gannon: Wait, how do we get in his office? You know he’s got the place lined with steel and a bank vault lock.

Cable: Uh, shoot, I don’t know.

Gannon: Weren’t you supposed to game plan for this? I thought you were gonna put together a strategy of some… (sigh). Wait, never mind.

Cable (verge of tears): What do we do, Rich? What do we do?!

All of a sudden, a slick figure drops from the ceiling and lands without noise in front of the duo.

Cable: Oh my god, who is that ninja-like figure?

Gannon: Well, its none other than Nnamdi Asomugha, All Pro cornerback for the Washington Generals, er, Oakland Raiders.

Asomugha: Listen guys, I just got back from teaching the inhabitants of a small African village how to read, write, process complex equations, and interpret algorithms and heard that you guys needed some help, so here I am.

Cable: But why would you wanna help us? The old man’s paying you like 14 mil a year.

Asomugha: Quite true, but I’ve been wanting to play for a contender too long now, and I can’t stand the unprofessional, quitting, loser atmosphere around here. Time to start over. Hit reset. If I didn’t restore that orphanage in Mexico or donate to various charitable causes the world over, that money would mean next to nothing. I want a title. Here are the codes to get in. Good luck, gentleman – I’m off to speak to the UN about the escalating crisis in Somalia. (speaking into wristwatch) Beam me up.

Asomugha vanishes in a particle beam right before the eyes of our intrepid heroes.

Cable: Wow, that guy is amazing.

Gannon: Shut up, fatty, I’m almost done with the codes. Aaaaaaannd – we’re in.

With the hiss of hydraulics and gears clicking, the steel reinforced door opens.

Cable: where the Hell is the old fart?

Al (off screen): Here, you oafs!

Cable and Gannon look up to the ceiling to find Al Davis strapped into and powering up some sort of rocket device as the ceiling retracts to expose open sky.

Al: You’ll never defeat me, losers. As always, I’m ten steps ahead of you!

    Cable: F*ck, I just can’t win!

Gannon: Don’t worry, stupid. Al can’t manage the team without a headquarters, can you old man?

Al: Silly fools, I’ve already planned the move to Los Angeles and my secret lair awaits. Have fun giving each other – what does my grandson say? – HJ’s, beeeeeyotch!

Davis laughs hysterically as he flies away in his rocket chair.

    Gannon: Well I’ll be damned.

    To be continued…..

Evidently there’s an article that says Oakland was Michael Vick’s first choice, then Dungy told him he’d have to be nuts to come here, and that’s how he wound up in Phily. Anyone heard about this?

  275. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Romanowski…LOL. You guys are unreal. Yeh, he’ll stand up to Al. You guys, we already have a coach who’ll get in the players faces and tell them what’s what. Art Shell did that. Remember, how so many of you kool aid drinkers swore Shell would bring back the discipline? Does no good when the players can circumvent the coaching staff and go right to Al. If Romanowski isn’t going to yell and spit in Al’s face, he’ll be useless here.

  276. KoolKell Says:

Yeah, I read the Dungy story. Evidently Vick thought he might be able to start here. But Dungy talked him out of it, citing Davis.

Troll, I wish I’d been there when the little runt began talking shyte. His ass would have been begging for la madre

  278. priesttj Says:

Cable needs to hire Romo yesterday. this team needs a fiery guy like Romo. I mean this guy is hands down the mst inspiring guy I’ve seen. Can you imagine Gruden as HC with Romo DC you’d have guy’s running around like their hairs on fire. They might not win right away but they would literally beat the crap out of everybody the play.

You wouldn’t see guy’s moping around thinking they can get away with showing up and collecting a paychecks. Like Warren Sapp and Moss did.

  279. priesttj Says:

But to be honest give me Harbaugh and Romo. And I’ll take whatever comes with it. Mr Davis I know is very high on Harbaugh and Romo is a Davis confidante.

Face facts BHP, I have already……..team cant win unless you know who takes a seat. The proof is too obvious. No matter the draft, free agent or coaching acquisition the franchise is fk’d.

post279,You want harbaugh and Romo,I want Gruden and Allen, seems most Demand WINS,but who will get it DONE? Gruden

  282. halster Says:

Hey Racho, you would be a hit at the Niner party if you could make change from that roll of quarters you want Florida Pete to shove up your ass. That might even top Romo slugging Al Davis. Go for it party animal !

I agree. It’s plain and simple I had the same argument in 1997. But thought maybe things have changed but it has never rang so true. AL DAVIS has SUNKEN our Raider Ship.
