Raiders turn back the clock one year
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, October 12th, 2009 at 4:52 pm in Oakland Raiders.
News, notes and quotes Monday in the aftermath of a 44-7 loss to the New York Giants in the Meadowlands:
– When Tom Cable talked of his love for Raiders tradition and getting things back to the way they were, he meant going back a lot farther than one year.
Yet that’s where the Raiders find themselves. They’re playing as if confused, tentative and unsure of their own abilities. They’re 1-4 and the season is spinning out of control.
Sort of like when Cable took over for Lane Kiffin after four games, the Raiders got crushed in New Orleans in Week 5, and then stumbled around for the better part of the remainder of the season before latching on to something positive in Weeks 16 and 17.
Only this time, two good weeks at year’s end aren’t going to do it for Cable.
“This reminds me of last year, the first few weeks of taking over, playing hard but not playing well,” Cable said.
What will it take to get the Raiders truly turned around?
“I think it takes three wins in a row to to really get faith and belief in what you’re trying to do and we’re just not there yet,” Cable said.
The last time the Raiders won three games in a row was 2002, beating Denver 28-17 on Dec. 22, the Kansas City Chiefs 28-0 on Dec. 28 and their first two playoff games, 30-10 over the New York Jets and 41-24 over Tennessee for the AFC championship. They had a five-game regular-season win streak earlier that season under the direction of the quarterback whose name must not be spoken.
They have had five two-game winning streaks over the past six seasons but have yet to win three in a row.
– Cable’s messages remain the same _ stay the course, find something to believe in, practice better if not harder. It’s not the effort that’s the problem, it’s the execution.
Cable wasn’t interested in building up the Giants as an unbeatable monster at the expense of the poor Raiders, nor will he chew his fingernails over the incoming Philadelphia Eagles.
“The problem is not who we’re playing,” Cable said. “The problem is us.”
– The Raiders have been outscored 96-16 in their last three games and haven’t broken 200 yards of total offense in their last four after never in franchise history going more than two consecutive weeks with less than 200.
Defensively, the Raiders gave up 14 more “explosive plays” against the Giants (runs of 11 more yards, pass plays of 16 or more yards) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha talked after the game of maybe being a little more multiple defensively.
Cable was asked about surendering play-calling duties again and brushed it off. He’s more concerned with staying in manageable third downs and executing the plays that are called rather than obsessing over sequence.
And although Cable didn’t say it _ with the issue being his own team, and all _ but all the evidence he needed was on the other side of the field.
The Giants did very little offensively or defensively that the Raiders don’t try and do on a weekly basis. They just do it better, and by a staggering degree.
– Defensive end Jay Richardson knows where he works, and he’s not expecting anything nearly as exotic as what the Eagles will line up with Sunday in terms of their zone blitzing packages.
“A little more mystery in what we’re going to do defensively? I’ve heard that from guys before,” Richardson said. “The reality is we know where we’re at, and we know how we do things here, and that’s how it’s going to be done. As long as we play it the way we’re supposed to play it, we shouldn’t have too many problems.”
Strong side linebacker Jon Alston, who figures to be a starter for the next month assuming he has recovered from a concussion sustained late in the Giants game, wanted no part of evaluating defensive strategy.
“I’m not a coach. I don’t know schemes other than this scheme,” Alston said. “I just play it, try to do the best that I can, given what I’ve been given. It’s not the scheme’s fault when a ‘backer goes into the wrong gap or a DB misses a coverage or doesn’t make a play on the ball.
“I’m more worried about my job. I’m worried about how well I’m doing that. Until I’m doing that at a Pro Bowl caliber level, I’m not pointing fingers anywhere.”
– Cable’s renewed commitment to the offensive line last week resulted in the Raiders averaging 2.4 yards per carry, giving up six sacks and affording JaMarcus Russell little or no protection.
“Obviously, I think we’re his baby, because he was our coach for so long,” left guard Chris Morris said. “I’m sure he feels like crap about it. But ultimately it’s on the players. We’re getting coaching from him, from coach (Jim) Michalczik, from our assistant O-line coach. In the end it’s on the players.”
– Cable deflected any issues regarding Russell’s play to issues regarding the whole team, and for the last two weeks he has a point. The protection has been so poor Russell had virtually no chance to succeed, whereas over the first three weeks he had ample time and missed the chance to make a lot of plays.
He said he believed a quarterback should have “presence” enough to avoid the three lost fumbles which hurt the Raiders Sunday, but it sounded as if the only solution is getting the Raiders to pass block better _ even though they used a lot of seven and eight-man protections.
– Cable said he has not allowed the Randy Hanson issue to filter down to the team. Hanson went public with his allegations of being attacked by Cable on Aug. 5 in an interview with Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports.com.
“I know the truth and I trust in the system, the process and I just know what’s supposed to happen will happen,” Cable said. “I’ve not let it become an issue. I’ve not put a lot into it, and, quite frankly, haven’t brought it to the team because it’s not their issue, it’s mine.”
Monday medical report
WR Chaz Schilens is day-to-day, having made “very good progress,” according to Cable. They hope to get him on the field this week . . . LB Ricky Brown has an ankle injury that could be rehabbed in four weeks, but also could necessitate surgery that would put him out for the season. They hope to get him on the field this week . . . Luke Lawton has an ankle sprain, his MRI was negative . . . T Mario Henderson left briefly with a stinger and is fine . . . RT Cornell Green (calf) and RB Darren McFadden (calf) will not play this week . . . LG Robert Gallery had a “good workout” and will be day-to-day . . . MLB Kirk Morrison had a knee strain in the second half and Cable said he “did not know what’s come of that” . . . DE Greg Ellis had an arthritic knee drained, a condition that could limit him in practice . . . FB Oren O’Neal is “day-to-day” with his ankle sprain.

Al Davis go…we will continue to lose and stink and be the laughing stock of the NFL until Al sells or passes on.
Please Al, if you love the Raiders as you claim, give up the franchise. You’re bring it down, you’re out of touch but you refuses to see what everyone else sees in regard to the steady, constant decline of this team.
If you can’t sell and you refuses to move on to the promise land, then put other people in charge, with the guarantee that you’ll keep your freaking nose out of all operations…starting with you’re “no-pressure defense.”
Just go away already.
October 12th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Cable needs to go.
October 12th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
“This reminds me of last year, the first few weeks of taking over, playing hard but not playing well,” …who is playing hard? Lechler?….“I think it takes three wins in a row to to really get faith and belief in what you’re trying to do and we’re just not there yet,” …Tom, lets try 3 first downs in a series, then 3 tds in a game, then 3 wins in a row…Cable said he has not allowed the Randy Hanson issue to filter down to the team….Tom, let it filter down! maybe we’ll still be in the game during the 3rd qtr!
October 12th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
This team is embarrasing.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
too many old people here on this site praising Al and living in the past. Live in the now! No coach will succeed as long as AD is in charge. The decisions come from him and why should anyone listen to Cable? Just Win Baby… What a joke.. Good bye nation, we deserve so much more.
I actually enjoyed this weekend of football, as I have emotionally detached myself from this “franchise”, I actually laughed when it was 28-0… It should have been worse, Coughlin called off the dogs.
Pride and Poise? Never have those terms been so misused as they are describing this awful organization.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
At the end of last season I was all for Cable being our head coach because he seemed to have the support of the players and had lit a spark under them. Im not sure what happened since then but he has lost the locker room. Man I’ll never stop being a Raider fan but seriously can Al just back off a bit and let someone run this organization right. Watching games where we play horrible sucks. We have talent. We should be competitive in more games. We do need better line help both sides to be good but we do have the pieces to at least be competitive with better coaching
October 12th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
It’s not Cable, although he’s way over his head. He’s there because he will “cow-toll” to whatever Davis wants him to do, and he will not out shine Davis. out shining Davis is what cost Gruden his job. Al Davis couldn’t handle the success of Gruden and the attention that Gruden was getting for his success. So, Al, like the fool that he is, traded Gruden.
Everything comes down to Al Davis. Especially our defensive play. Al can’t adjust to modern football and still lives in the past success and glory of our Raiders from the seventies and early eighties.
There is too much loyalty from the Raiders fans around northern california and especially the Oakland area. But, fans should not forget that he “bailed out of them for the Los Angeles market.” If it wasn’t for the politics of the Mayor’s office in LA and if they would have kept their promise to Davis, the Raiders would still be the Los Angeles Raiders. Never forget that, it’s speaks volumes of who Davis is. And, what Davis is…is sick and senile. He’s even down on Rich Gannon for speaking out. The truth doesn’t matter, you can’t speak anything negative against his Raiders.
Enough is enough. People need to stop supporting this team until Davis sells it or release all of his control.
Davis must go, he’s the Raiders biggest nightmare.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
This is not Cable’s fault…hes only part of the problem. Al hires these guys to clean up the mess he created and no coach has yet to get it done. If Al is going to stay and not hire a Cowher or Holmgren to coach and run this team than he needs to bring Gruden back because whatever it is that he did…IT WORKED!
October 12th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
This exerpt was from an article in the Sporting News
“When you’re kind of riding that rail of having a breakthrough and going backward, you can’t allow like what just happened to us to keep pushing you backward,” Cable said. “You have to keep fighting through it. I think it takes three wins in a row to really get faith and a belief in what you’re trying to do, and we’re just not there yet.”
————————————————————————————————————–
It’s official: Tom Cable is on drugs.
We can’t get three straight first downs and this clown is talking about three wins in a row. I almost choked on my own spit when I read that.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
I saw an effort out there too … Too bad its not nearly enough to measure up to NFL standards.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
People keep saying that we have talent. this is the nfl, talent is a commodity, every team has talent, talent does not win games, talent is an excuse. How the hell do you measure talent? measuring talent is arbitrary and discretional. how the hell do you measure a team? with numbers, with wins and losses, with Yards and TDs, with completion percentage and sacks…talent is Al Davis pathetic excuse.

Cable needs to hire Romo yesterday. this team needs a fiery guy like Romo. I mean this guy is hands down the mst inspiring guy I’ve seen. Can you imagine Gruden as HC with Romo DC you’d have guy’s running around like their hairs on fire. They might not win right away but they would literally beat the crap out of everybody the play.
You wouldn’t see guy’s moping around thinking they can get away with showing up and collecting a paychecks. Like Warren Sapp and Moss did.
********************************8
No man you still are fighting it. Upper management is trash and the players dont give a good damn because of it. It isn’t the fact we lack talent or anything, we know who takes responsibility for this savage failure week after week year after year. You can bring Vince Lombardi from the 60s in to coach Oakland and we would still be garbage. Stop it man with your fantasies of this guy and that guy ever coming here. It will never work and Al Davis is the reason.

Anybody read Playboy’s Raider piece!! Boy do I wish the Tooz, Assasin tatum, the Snake, and characters alike were on the Raiders squad today!!
Our players today are soft, and twitter about who has good food and other crap, nobody is vocal about this teams lack of raw Raiderness! Nobody calls anyone out! Nobody holds anyone accountable!!
The way to change the environment is to speak up, let the real issues be known!! We need some true throwback Raiders on this team!!!
October 12th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Who “reads” Playboy?
October 12th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
We have an old stubborn new york raised owner that over rules everything inside the organization. He continues scholarship program for guys who shouldn’t be playing. The head coach is a stooged idiot who has no idea how to manage a football team. He is responsible for calling the offensive plays, are you kidding me? He should humble himself and demote his duties.
The QB doesn’t take it serious at all. Fat,lazy and dumb defines the guy. He is the biggest problem as far as playing time goes. His comp pct being low cant be only attributed to the other players. Guy sucks and we need to cut him immediately after the season.
We have huge troubles. Al won’t give it up and we already better be looking to 2010.

You should be thankful you didn’t puke as many times the Giants got a first down….You would be in the hospital…
October 12th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Many people here have mentioned other coaches like Cowher, etc. But those successful coaches “will-not” and “should-not” ever take a job coaching for Al Davis. Most, if not all good coaches will refuse to work with Al Davis.
We all know WHY. Al’s ego forces him to meddle and keep control of too many aspects of this teams schemes and method of play. From Defense to Offense to the draft selections. On the draft, Al continues to try and convert track speedsters into football players and we have seen that that fails more than it works.
So stop hoping for a “good-coach” to take over and guide this team to some victories. It’s not going to happen.
No one in their right mind wants to coach for Al Davis.
We’ll only improve when Al Davis is gone or has sold the team or has signed a “GUARANTEED-CONTRACT” that cannot be changed, stating that Al Davis cannot have anything to do with the running, coaching and drafting of players. Then, and only then, will we have a small chance of getting a good coach.

Finally, Finally! A player admits that Al Davis runs the defense and if they shut up and just do it, they won’t have too many problems collecting their checks on Monday.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Brien,
Not too high on Nnamdi right now. Yeah he does his job but he keeps his mouth shut so he can continue to collect his checks. You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem and right now Nnamdi is part of the problem. Just keeping it real!
October 12th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
HAHA Yeah I know reading is a lost art, but the fact that I obtain a Playboy speaks for itself!! Regardless still a great piece, to remember the days of yor! Even the 03-04 Raiders, those were the days!

Russell is the leader and doesnt give a damn about being great at all. Send that guy outta here.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
I am not going to get on the Al Davis must go bandwagon. Nor will I get on bench Russell in favor of Gradkowski b/c it’s never gonna happen.
I truly believe that we can’t fully evaluate Russell as a QB until our O-line play improves and our WR’s get more NFL experience. There’s a reason why most teams don’t start rookie WR’s. Yes, fill in on certain packages but not counted on every play. It’s not just lip service that Cable says that it’s a team effort and not just one person.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not sold as Russell as the QB of the future, but the Raiders have such an investment in him.
My thought, which isn’t worth crap, is that we (like we preach every year around draft time) is draft oline/dline with maybe a CB in the 3rd. See how Russell performs next year with a better oline and WR’s who have some NFL experience and a full NFL offseason to train and practice.
Than if he still sucks, we have a team that’s ready to support and protect a rookie QB.

Look buddy I’m not trying to start and argument with ya but tell me what the other possible solutions are there. Davis is cool for all the old mystique but seriously the team hasn’t found it way to dominance since 86. Al needs to do something else because his aura and style wont allow wins in today’s NFL. IT is classic failure after classic failure.
As for that country bama ass Jachokeus Russell, he is an utter piece of trash for not even trying to be good. He is disgusting to watch live. He is embarrassing to the highest degree. Got 32 million in the bank the financial struggles of the everyday man doesnt ail him. He is awful man. He has had ample chances. Overweight and not good. Face it

^^^^^^^Exactly…the old stubborn man needs to go!
I also hope the media and us fans keep pressuring and talking about why the passing game seems to have regressed instead of progressed to where they left off last year??
I think it’s a combination of two 3 things obviously.
They changed unecessarily to a more vertical passing attack (which sucks) the O-Line and Russell are struggling.
Lousy…lousy….lousy……Cable and Tollner don’t even know how to utilize DHB and DMC correctly and get them the ball in space….

DK………….DHB was reached for eventhough he would have went in the first round. The team was lacking toughness up the middle of the field. There wasnt a nose tackle worth the 7th pick but Ron Brace was there in the 2nd. Rey Maualuga is a smack addict and smashed everyone he hits. He is a true football player in the mold of Greg Biekert. Team needed that more than anything. Morrison is a complete joke out there. Al messed up just like he did letting Norv convince him Robert Gallery was worth the number 2 pick

They’re talking about this weekends games, when they finally get around to the Raiders. Tom Jackson states that the Raiders are going to go 0-16. He didn’t just say they wouldn’t win another game. The other two jackasses were going right along with him. They kept going on and on about how what once was unthinkable, a winless team in the NFL, was now likely going to happen in back to back years. I was thinking How stupid are you guys? Unless it’s discovered that the Raiders used an academically ineligible player, and the NCAA makes them forfeit their win in KC, they are not going 0-16. 1-15 maybe.

I have been a Raider fan my entire life, and I just don’t even know what to think with this team right now. My honest opinion is Cable should be fired,JaMarcus thrown out the front door, and hire a GM to help AL. I am loyal to AL and the Raiders for life but he needs help in that front office and that team needs an established coach with a new QB that want to lead the rest of that talented group of players. I also think that every player looking to just pick up a paycheck should be tossed out like trash.
October 12th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Brien,
You missed the point about the article and the old Raiders. See those guys in Denver, thye are currently playing like the old raiders. They are a tight group up there.
the old Raiders per the article – Guys would check with the older guys on wearing their number and whether they were living up to the standards. They were a bunch of crazy guys but they were extremely tight and cared for each other. Madden had a rule that you do whatever but practice hard and be on time. That was what was in the article….
These current yoyo’s dont care and that has been well documented.

Then we have the most worthless athlete of all time playing on the most worthless franchise of all time!

No, the logical thing to happen is for Al to beg Cowher to be his gm/head coach and his undying promise to humble himself and let Cowher run that franchise. He has the fire, passion and track record to tell everyone to shut the F up. Too bad it wont happen.
October 12th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
This team is in total denial. The culture of losing is so deeply embedded in this team that it shocks me. I have been a Raider fan for almost 35 years and I have never felt more hopeless than I do now. C’mon Raiders turn it around!!!!!
October 12th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

I don’t like to be disrespected by an organization who is run by the Devil(AL). They play like crap and then if you go to Raiders.com they got the nerve to ask their fans to vote what was the most impressive play by the Raiders in a 44-7 loss to the NY Giants…You got to be F ing kidding me…Realistically though I’m cursed I will be watching the raiders next week.

Davis tweeked the offense this off=season to more resemble the 2006 classic, and hits on the QB. I knew he’d ruin Russell
October 12th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
It is hard to believe that Javon Walker at 75% cannot get on the field before a “speed” guy with no hands D.H.B.=(Doesn’t Handle the Ball) with 2 cathes over 5 games.
After yesterdays game, the blitz happy Eagles are probabaly giddy with the thought that they are going to come into Oakland and throw the kitchen sink at JRuss while the track team tries to outrun the deep coverage. The only way the Raiders make this a game is if they commit to the run and find a short/intermediate pass game. Otherwise, this could be uglier than yesterday, the Eagles might not let off the gas like the Giants did.

snb,
Im really frustrated and these 2 weeks been like hell. I have been having a bad mood all the time for the past 2 weeks but shut the hell up bro. You’re overreacting and release kelly(playin well), asomugha)our BEST player), seymour(impact), ellis(impact), c.johnson(2nd best corner),and Gallery (whose absence is the reason our o line sucks rite now)is just complete lunacy. Like I said I can understand how frustrated you are but you are overreacting on this post because without some of the players i listed this team would probably be the worst team in Raiders history. The entire defense had a terrible game and basically werent trying but who hasnt? personally i dnt blame the giants win on any of the players i blame it on the fat f*** cable and the greatest owner that ever lived the beyong egotistical al davis who is the MAIN reason we suck right now. Cable is just a puppet and he didnt do nothing and get in the face of nobody and thats why the players play like they did after being down by 14-0 and they really didnt try and played uninspired football after those 2 tds. And we have a qb who actually wasnt the blame for the loss but it dont matter because his absolute zero work ethic, dedication is the reason why we play like we are. The main faults is Davis because he lets the players do everything and is a control freak of the entire raiders except money and doesnt let cable do nothing but rally troops which the fat f** failed to do. We have an absolute dysfunctional franchise and it wont change unless al davis changes his ways( which he never will) or he steps down and i can see us going deep in the playoffs when he steps down but it aint gonna happen because it concerns me deeply that we have a owner who has a massive ego, whose ridiculously evil, unconvincable tyrant running our once proud, once glorious, beloved Raiders.
October 12th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
This is getting ugly. I knew the Russell bashers would be out in full force, but c’mon. Did he have much of a chance. The Giants have probably the best, deepest D-line in football. The Raiders would have had their hands full with a healthy offensive line. But with that patchwork reshuffled offensive line. Then Henderson goes down. Total mismatch. It was a complete jailbreak. It reminded me of that old video game Frogger. JR looked like he was trying to cross an eight lane freeway with semis coming from both directions. This is starting to look like the beating Andrew Walter took in the B&B offense. Totally ruined that kid’s career. Hope the same doesn’t happen to Russell.

Isnt it bad that you cant enjoy the holidays with a winning team?
October 12th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Tazz, if u want the Raiders to win this the keys to victory.
1) Al Davis changes or dies
2) Fire Cable sign Shannahan
3) Trade for Mcnabb give up next year 1st plus JR, Mcfumble
4) Trade Kelly n Warren n 2 rounder for Shaun Rogers
5) Sign best available RG, RT
5 hard steps to change the Raiders fortunes.

October 12th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Until Al Davis starts drafting linemen in the first round, we will continue to suck.
October 12th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Quit it with the we need to trade for this guy and that guy. After the season we can sign the All Pro Team and bring them to Alameda to don the Silver N Black, if Al and Cable are still running the show we will only be good enough to beat the Chiefs (once) next year.
October 12th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
To be honest. THere is a good chance the Raiders are going to have a helluva time signing their top 10 pick UNLESS they reach another 20 picks and draft a 2nd rounder in the 1st round.
I don’t think a high ranking QB will sign here at this point. would you?
Hell, you might just sit out.
The Raiders don’t build careers…they destroy them!

=====================================================
Do you think Sam Bradford would report? There is no way a young QB drafted in the top 10 would sign with the Raiders at this point.
And it would be a rational decision. Raiders haven’t demonstrated a good ability to develop young talent, especially at the QB. The coaching carousel and substandard hires would destroy a young career…not withstanding a young QB who is overweight and skips meetings mind you.
The Raiders get more production from later round picks anyway. I would just trade them all down and get hungry late round “height/weight/speed” guys and see who can make the squad.

Someone needs to sit Al down, and talk some sense to him. Al needs help.

Or, hire a coach with a lot of HC exp.

You’re right Brien,
This team severely lacks toughness, and physicality on defense. Especially at linebacker. It was evident sunday.I really wanted Mauauluga(sp) in this draft. Even over Laurrenitis. His 260lbs. of meanness is exactly what this defense needed. I really thought Morrison and Howard were two cornerstones that this defense could be built around. Remember when they combined for 11 int’s a couple of years ago. They were both baby butt soft on Sunday. Against the run and pass. They both did something on Sun. on more than one occasion. and it drove me crazy. The Giant receivers kept leaving their feet to catch passes, especially the tight end who was replacing Boss. Kirk and Howard both had chances to unload. I’m not talking about stupid shyt like going to the head, and drawing 15. Just arriving with velocity, leading with shoulder pads, wrapping up and driving the opponent into the ground. Good fundamental defense. Instead both of them would arrive at the rec. stop and stand flat footed, then reach out and try to make an arm tackle. And look rather sissified doing it. It was disgusting.

Seriously guys, just start rooting for a different team until Al Davis dies or gives it up. I am convinced that it is more important to him to try and be right, then WIN.
The reason Jamarcus is still in is because he wants so desperately to prove that Kiffin was wrong in not wanting him. That to Mr. Davis is more important than YOU the fan. His stubborness takes priority over everything else…including winning.
Shove it up Al’s arse and STAY AWAY from the coliseum Sunday. It’s the only way to “get back at” Al.
Whatever happened to ‘Just Win Baby’? It got replaced by “Just let me prove I’m right, even though I’m wrong baby”.

Most o you watching the MNF game are seeing what a running game and experienced WR’s and an Oline can do for a young QB. Sure the QB has to get it done but at least he has some help. You can’t jus tee off on either of these guy’s because of the running game.
If not for Jones and Washington Sanchez would be under siege. If you give ussell theme protection and running game you’ll seee what he is capable of. Murphy had an opportunity for a huge play vs the Giants and just didn’t make play on the ball.
You’ll see what I mean when Chaz gets back and we start using Bush properly. It sounds simplistic and it is but until you do it. It sound like an excuse!

Henne’s TD pass to the TE was badly underthrown, and that pass Sanchez just threw to Braylon was NOT on target. Receivers get paid to make plays on the ball, and our young guys are just not there yet.
And NOOOOOOO that doesn’t mean JRuss gets any less blame for Christ’s sake! It just means our WRs are not making plays, just like our QB, Oline, LBs, and Nickel corner are not either!

Thats It Raider Fans! I am officially done with this team. I cannot endure it any longer.
Its not the losses that have me throwing in the towel, it is the utter, sheer ineptitude that this team has found those losses with. This is by far the absolute WORST run franchise in the NFL today.
I know I will not be missed, and you know what, I won’t miss living and dying week in and week out for 7 years with this team. Enough is enough, I want a divorce from this Horrible excuse for a football team. Im done, it is over. I will always love the Raiders, but for now, my time, my money, and my emotional state need to be spent in a more positive, thoughfull, progressive manner. This is such a sorry excuse for football that I simply cannot watch this disgrace any more. I cannot raise my son watching this, and I cannot condone this sort of football being presented to my family anymore. I have played the game my whole life, I have played on teams that were bad, and I have played AGAINST teams that were this bad, and you know what the number one thing that those bad teams had in common? Zero Discipline.. Its that simple. I refuse to continue to be associated with a team that is this Undisciplined, this uncommitted to playing solid, intelligent football. I don’t want my son to see it, to think that I condone this…as football??!!! I grew up watching the best players in the game and constantly sought to play like them. I never once dropped a pass in a game. I fumbled once a year maybe. I never jumped offsides, false started or got called for holding or clipping–Because the players that I emulated never did either. I simply cannot show my children this. I don’t want to have these conversations with them. How do you explain to a child, why Jamarcus Russell and Co. are so bad? How do you justify their existance….Simply, you can’t!
In the early years of 1999-2000 etc..this team won in spite of AL Davis, this team won because the people that were on this team were professionals, and refused to stamp their name on a loser. They made this team a winner.
I have seen 1st year QB’s from 1-AA schools take their respective teams to the AFC Championship Game I have seen 1st year rookies all OVER the NFL look like they could take their team as far as they want to go. I have seen OUR 3rd year QB look as clueless as my 90 year old Grandmother trying to climb Mt. Everest.not any more…I cannot watch this, the Raiders do not stand for Who I am as a person any longer, they stand for something I abhor as a human being, Laziness, Unprofessionalism, Unnacountability, Lack of Pride, Finger Pointing, Disbelief, All talk, no action….The list goes on and on. Oh the Horror!
Nnambdi and a handful of others have my deepest sympathies. The rest of you fans have my respect and my sympathies also. Fare thee well my friends, I will miss you, and the Raiders that I once knew with all my heart. For now though, I must sail on lest I teach a generation of my own family what it looks like to play a disgusting excuse for football. Someday, we may meet again…..
October 12th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Most intelligent thing John Paul has ever said.
You’re right, because Al Davis is injured we can’t send him across the middle every down. I’d slap that birthday jersey on his back and send him on the same routes the last good #80 we had running them.
October 12th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
It’s not about JRuss, it’s about the WRs making some plays regardless of the QB.
For the 1000000000000000th time, of course JRuss misses some passes badly. Tell us something we don’t know.
But that doesn’t excuse the FACT that the WRs on our team have yet to make a play. 9 DROPS by the WRs last game has nothing to do with the QB. The 2 drops yesterday were ridiculous.
This team has the “here we go again” mentality IMO. I don’t think they have “quit” at all. Chris Johnson is making bonehead plays that are giving up TDs. Same with Routt. Our LBs are back to overpursuing and missing gaps. Changing the QB is not going to make CJ stop taking those risks! Changing the QB is NOT going to make our LBs all of a sudden have gap discipline. Changing the QB is NOT going to plug the holes on the Oline, man. It’s just NOT going to happen.
Like I said, you guys seem to have all the JRuss criticism down pat, so I’ll just focus on the Oline, WRs, and LBs. Oh, and Stan Routt!

I think you are going to see a lot of 3 WR sets with DHB, Chaz, and Murphy. Hopefully we can get a heavy dose of Bush on the field with those 3 and that should open it up a little bit for the Oline. Problem is, opposing teams front 4 has been handling our guys with no problem.

…….
B4 someone tries to bring up the 70s Raiders to refute this point, let me remind you that while Kenny Stabler’s Raiders partied off of the field, they were all business on the field, and that included practice. There were occasions, like Ted Hendricks and the horse, whatever. But they were business. Stabler talks of a guy coming in and making a joke while they were in the huddle. They all just stared at him. He didn’t get it. That’s not what the Raiders were about. It’s ALL business between the white lines. They partied AFTER the win.

Brien,
You have GOT to be kidding me! Did you see Sanchez the past few weeks? Are you telling me this new Braylon Edwards kid is not making plays all over the place? Does DHB fight the DBs while the ball is in the air? Watkins? Murphy? Murphy should have AT LEAST drawn a PI call on that play yesterday by slowing up. I’m sure he’ll get that in his arsenal, but we do NOT have a guy on our team making plays like Braylon is tonight! And I haven’t seen DHB get behind the defense like Ginn did or else our QB would hit him like he did with 2 min to go in the MN game.

I see the jets finally geting back to the playoffs and beyond Sanchez is playing very well. And that is a damn good team he’s on they play grea defense and run Now they have the final piece in Sanchez. Can’t deny it they have got it going. Kudos!!

we are a terrible football team. Even the DETROIT LIONS are playing with more heart and desire and even though they lost to the steelers they stuck it out throught the end and held they own. Its terrible that our team has no desire to play because we aint goin nowhere. However unlike some weak bandwagon fans on this blog like MikieG, I will still be a die hard Raiders fan if we go 1-15 or play worse because i have unconditional love for the Raiders and its like loving my wife. I will watch ALL of the games upcoming for this season because i have too much love ofr this team. And when the Raiders return to glory your goin to see people like mikieg hangin on the raiders nuts and witness a bandwagon traitor that gave up on the team on now proclaims his love for them. Shout out to 408 an other raider fans who are true im with ya bro WIN, LOSE OR TIE, RAIDERS TILL I F*** DIE!!!

October 12th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
The Raiders (1-4) simply can’t find the first-down marker to retain possession. They have averaged only 10.8 first downs in their first five games, one of several categories in which they rank 32nd (last) in the NFL. Among the others: yards per game (191.6) and time of possession (25 minutes, 17 seconds).
……………..
Cable needs to go.

I 110 % agree with you but it still doesnt escape the fact that russell has no zero work ethic and is a lazy bum. I mean come on our own franchise qb, the most important player on this team is fined for being overweight and sources say he was fined for being late too meetings. Our franchise qb. We were well coached in the charger game and played tremendous but russell lost the game for us anyways because of the 5 STRAIGHT THREE N OUTS. I want to support russell like you do but the guy doesnt care and it shows when he plays annd he has a GREAT QB COACH in paul hackett. Dont defend russell too much.

I’m going to tell you what I saw tonight Brien….
Grove and Mangold were pretty damn good!
I’ve said it a million times, I could care less about Russell. BUT, I can clearly see that this team has a lot more issues than poor QB play. Leader, smeader, hamburger eater. Who the F cares man!
The team was up with two minutes to go in game 1, and the DEFENSE LOST THE GAME giving up 2 4th qtr TDs. Had SD in 3rd and long TWICE and gave up TD BOTH TIMES. And the team quit because of the QB? No, we lost because we got outcoached.
Defense played the type of game we all expected week 2 so they certainly didn’t give up then, right or wrong?
Coming off a win, the team quit against Denver? NO! We got our ASSES kicked by a team that is now 5-0. Their defense beat the shyt out of our Oline and our defensive coach was OUTCOACHED again when he KEPT having Morrison check Marshall, lol!
Houston game saw the WRs drop 9 balls and CJ get torched.
This shyt is plain as day, but a QB change is going to cure all of this? Gradkowski is going to make CJ look like he did last year? Will Frye make Routt a legit corner? Morrison, Brown, or Alston going to be LBs all of a sudden?
Cmon man, I know you’ve got WAY more than that!
October 12th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
I wish someone on the Raiders staff would tell the truth and come out and say we suck! and then address the problems and call people out on the B.S. Cut all the fat and let the players who play hard, regardless of salary play the game…we need to cut all of our dead weight

That’s BS Brien! You are better than that. I already had this debate with you, gave you your 6 passes you said would have made it a helluva game, and you still come with this?
McFadden dropped 2 balls
DHB dropped 2 balls
Murphy dropped 2 balls including the TD at the half.
Evreyone INCLUDING the BSPN crew said that first pick was on Murphy. The other was a hail mary at the end of the game.
Did Russell put up 2 scoring drives in the 4th qtr, one to go up with 2 mins to go or not? Were you and all the Russell haters not going crazy when he hit Murphy for that go ahead TD. You can’t tell me you were not celebrating a GO AHEAD TD with 2 minutes to go in the 4th qtr!

exactly priest juss like brien said 12 for 30 missed open guys. The game should’ve been a blowout anyways. The outcome of our screwed murphy call should’ve been a blowout. Our defense stopped the chargers soo many times and when jamarcus was handed over the ball he wasted away 5 possessions basically. He could’ve drove the team at least twice to score and the game would’ve benn before. Quit protecting russell too much.

So no matter what you say it’s Russell’s fault. I would love to see Russell with Miami’s running game. He would destroy defenses.
How many players has Henne overthrown 6 if not more but that running game bails him out.
October 12th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
I have been a Raider Fan for 35 years. I relinquish my Raider fandom not because they have lost for the past 7 years straight…no, no, no…that would be too easy. TazZraider and Co. I am not a fair weather, Band Wagon fan.
The Raiders have simply made themselves totally irrelevant in my life. They stand for NOTHING I have been teaching my children and my students as well as my self for my entire life.
I can’t identify with these guys. I don’t even recognize what they are trying to do, or present themselves as. I am completely baffled by what they think they are trying to accomplish.
They are masters of denial, overestimation, and blame. I don’t want my family to bear witness to this tragedy, to think themselves somehow associated with this disgusting excuse for professionalism. If I made everything I did look as hard as the Raiders make it look, my children would have no confidence in themselves or me….
I cannot teach this.
I cannot allow this to be taught….

He is in accurate and his entourage have no respect forthe people that pay alot of money to watch him play. Damn shame if you ask me. It comes down to this:
We have an 80 yr. old man who is (not joking here) probably a little touched in the head who is serving as GM of a modern day NFL franchise. He is also the defensive coordinator, and offensive coordinator for all intents and purposes. Think about that…

LOL, 2 of the drops were bad passes? Did they hit the guys in the hands or what?
And I said the commentary on the ONE PLAY was unanimous that Murphy ran a bad route and gave up the pick to Jammer. Murphy also without question dropped the on the money TD pass at the half.

If the team were winning you wouldn’t be hearing all the negativity about the Raiders.
Winning cures everything.
Al has forgotten that and let the worst part of himself shine through. His bitterness and hatred and vengefulness and pride are undoing him. And his franchise.
Al doesn’t realize that people would actually rspect him more if he had the guts to admit his mistakes (like Russell and Gruden and.ON AND ON).
Stupid pride has killed the Raiders and we the fans are the hostages in Al’s bizarre trek of retribution.

Great call brother. That pass was over the outside shoulder where only his player could make the play. Its either a catch or an incompletion.

The film shows teams can go all out against the run in the first half because Russell sucks and then once you established a lead you can just send the sink at Russell because he cant throw the ball lol. Come on man he isnt going to make a play to beat anyone

Brien, stop with the BS man!
You are a much more astute FB guy that this. I’m really starting to wonder if someone is trolling you.
All the panel was just talking about was Braylon Edwards opening up the playbook for the Jets with his talent. SY said “to be able to have a guy that big and strong that you can just throw the ball up to and he’ll go get it ….” I mean CMON!
That pass to Braylon was put where only he could make a play? LMFAO! Well let me just say that there is not ONE WR on our team that would have made that play! NOT ONE!
Mendenhall is slacking, how does Tomlin handle it?
Bly gets out of line? What happens?
Kids test the parents in Oakland? What happens?
QB MY ASS! And you say those young QBs would suck ass in Oakland, but just not as bad? Is that what it has come to? How about addressing what you KNOW will also make those other guys with all the qualities you love just as big a bust as JRuss?

Ok, for all you fellow raider fans out there protecting JR. If our O line is injured and you know its going to be a jailbreak every down then why don’t the raiders put in a more mobile quarterback like Gradowsiki and have him role out and throw the ball. Besides the fact I think JR is a huge powder puff. I believe it would be a good decision to give the back up some work. This is a team game. It least the two quarterbacks could empathize with one another and maybe talk to each other about what each of them is seeing on the field. But what the hell do I know…Al and Cable are the rocket scientist. Oh yeah its not just JR but I don’t blame the defense for giving JR a perspective on what they have to watch every week from the offense.
October 12th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Tommy Kelly, Warren, Scott, Morrison, Ricky Brown, Alston, CJ, and Routt have all quit because or QB sucks according to some of you.
John Holland, Louis Rank and File, JLH, and all the other return guys just see no point in it since our QB won’t do anything anyway.

My take on those guys is they just suck and provide huge holes in our defense and special teams. But what do I know!
October 12th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

But the “Genius”, needed to prove how smart he was drafting Bey, and forced him on the offense.
October 12th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Let’s say that they would “care” more …
So what?
Just like Gradkowski and Frye care more, and we would still lose?
Ok let’s hurry up and get to that phase of it so we can FINALLY start talking about the Oline and STs.

Are we up to 2001 excuses for JaMarcus.
I saw Sanchez tonight look at 4 different WRs … that’s right 4 different WRs and he completed the pass. The Raiders can’t send move than 2 WRs because it’s to confusing for JaMarcus … he can process it.
Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown would quit playing if JaMarcus was the QB and I would bet my last dollar Jones and Washington would rush for less than 100 yds/game if JaMarcus was their QB.
Gradkowski … play two plays this year … threw 2 passes and guess what he completed both of them. Wow … what would happen if he had a good OL and got help from the receivers … be a MVP.

what bothers me about russ is that he ended last year very good and he comes in out of shape instead of bulding offof what he finished last year. that is disturbing and he 80% responsible for his regression. he doesnt take off and run for 1rst downs like he is capable of and makes me sick. i will agree with brien that he doesnt make plays to win THROUGHOUT a game. its more than completetion %. he doesnt run until the 3rd or 4th quarter when the game is out of reach when he needs to do it early.

Lombardi notes that the Raiders have called “a lot of teams” and everyone is available with the exception of about five or six players, a group that includes CB Nnamdi Asomugah and QB JaMarcus Russell. “The Raiders want to shake it up, and certainly, they should,” Lombardi said. “They’re 1-4, they’re pathetic offensively. They need to do something to kind of stimulate and change the culture of the football team.”

Chad Henne, in his second NFL start, completed 20 of 26 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns for the Dolphins.
Jets rookie Mark Sanchez was 12-of-24 for 172 yards, while Edwards, acquired in a trade with Cleveland a week ago, caught a scoring pass and set up New York’s other two touchdowns.

Wassup Armond.
I can understand the frustration, to be honest. It’s just that my expectations were never for JRuss to be this helluva #1 pick. Even with the way he finished last year, I expected this team to be led by a strong running game, defense, and special teams.
I go back to the summer when I got killed on this board for saying take Mack at #7. Once we lost Grove, C became the # 1 priority in front of replacing Green at RT. For some reason, we went with Satele. THAT MOVE right there set us WAY back. Satele getting beat out by Morris has killed this Oline.
When we traded for Satele, I said Rey-Rey-Rey-Rey! Brien told me it would never happen. Me and Chris in NY thought better since Al was such an SC guy. We all know what happened next.
Next blow was Chaz going down. With all the momentum Murphy had, I got killed for saying that Chaz going down was going to have a huge impact on the passing game.
Anyway, not as surprised as a lot of folks are, so it’s easy to see ALL the flaws, not just one.

Al Davis doesn’t really need to die, he just needs to man up and realize that all great offenses have great offensive lines. Every single one of the Raiders offenses that were great, since the franchize has been around had outstanding offensive lineman. And it starts with the draft. We need some SMART young lineman from big time schools to come in and grow together. We started with Gallery and never really brought in anyone else (although Mario Henderson holds his own some of the time). WE NEED LINEMAN

October 12th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
Time to see more Mike Mitchell. Nice job on the goaline D. Let him roam the field as FS and lay people out while gaining some experience. What do you have to lose at this point?
Also, Bush needs to get 5x as many carries as Fargas until McFadden returns.
And I’ve been defending JaMarcus fiercely all along, but maybe it’s time to give him a break and see what kind of difference one of the other two QBs makes. If the answer is “not much” go right back to JaMarcus. I still feel he’s capable of being a great QB because he shows that in flashes, but those flashes are too few and far between. But it’s worth seeing just how much of the problem he truly is at this point.
Also, Pears stinks. Put Barnes in at RT already.
Also, Hire Jim Fassel.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Chaz’s return has on JaMarcus and the offense. Don’t be shocked if it’s absolutely dramatic. He’s the only receiver besides Miller who JaMarcus has shown a consistent connection with.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Just a thought…..
Last year when Cable took over the team in mid season, he ran the ball and ran the ball some more, and then threw the high percentage pass the team looked good and won some games. JRuss looked good then.
Simple math tells me that when AD Football hired Cable permanenetly, due in no small part to the differences of opinion on offensive strategy experienced with the former coach “Lance Kiddin”, AD Football got some assurance from the new coach Cable that the A.D. Football “Big Play” offense, with the A.D. Football approved “Big Play” QB, and A.D. Football endorsed uberathlete “Big Play” rookie WR would be showcased to show all the doubters as well as former coach included that the legendary A.D. Football “Big Play or bust” offense was alive and well…
What you have now is the 2006-2007 Raider offense reincarnated; and just like 2006, the only thing that it will win the Raiders is a top 3 selection in the 2010 draft.
Note to Alameda
This is not 1970 and gifted track athletes will only win track meets. Disciplined Football players will win football games.

guys,
Football is a game of intensity. At this level, everyone is fast and strong. BUT the guy with more intensity at that moment wins. We all wonder why they played so physical in the chargers game. IMO it was Seymour that initially had the sack that fired the team up.
Look at the niners, their talent on offense is not great but Singletary got them fired up to play better than they are.
We need to put hitters in there. We need Mitchell to hit somebody (cuz our LB’s aint going to do it). I have been lobbying for Mitchell to play. This is one guy that I want Al to meddle with and insists that they put him in there. He can crank up the intensity for us. We need it.

Mind boggling….only on LOUSY Al Davis and idiotic cronies watch! LOL
October 13th, 2009 at 12:06 am
yeah gilbert thats the funny thing about dbs. we actually need some now but we dont want al to draft them. u know he will now that rout has been fookin up. we all gotta reamined fired up for the season. im about ready to throw in the towel but i cant help but get juiced up again come thursday. we have to get more physically and mentally tough players next year if we want to win long term. but we also have to utilize our talent properly and let certain phases of the team develope on its own. thats why we got better at the end of last season. u really want al to make a splash then go get peppers to play end and move seymour inside and tell kelly and warren to hit the bricks. sign a dt fa who can be physical and draft one of the better dts with the 1rts or 2nd rnd. it may be a dream but u gotta dream big especially if they are auctioning off 90% of the team.
October 13th, 2009 at 12:07 am
dknight they regressed cuz they went away from what worked and unfortunately russell didnt build off his momentum from the end of last year. instead he got comfortable with it which is a sign of the work ethic
issues people have complained about. he got satisfied instead of being hungry for more. i want him as the guy but he lost alot of my respect for not comin in ready to expand on what he did last year.
October 13th, 2009 at 12:08 am
I’m curious as to you guy’s opinion of Branch, IMO he is the only guy in the back 7 that’s really laying the wood. I want him in there to stay.
ChrisJ needs to get back to the basics and stay assignment sound. Our LB’s are nonexistent and it’s costing us bigtime.
If anyone doesn’t understand the the impact that Chaz will have on this team you should’ve seen what Braylon Edawards brought to the Jets. And hejust got there. Chaz is Russell’s confidence in a word. He will have a huge affect on the young WR’s understanding how to make plays. Once he starts making plays the will follow suit and it will take the prssure off them so the an relax and play.
Murph is simply trying tooo hard and DHB doesn’t have Russell’s trust. But the biggest thing is MICHAEL BUSH if Cable can somehowfocus on getting this kid going early and often this can be a very diffeent team. I swear I can’t emphasize this enough Bush can be the key to this entire team gaining confidence. Because he taes the pressure off Russell and alllows Russell to have some throwing lanes. The entire offens will start to work.
You can archive this post and in 4 weeks read it again and see how true it is. Chaz and Bush can do for this team what Brandon Marshall and Moreno do for the Broncos. Look at Cincinnati with their running game and WR’s. No QB can get it done without playmakers making plays. That’s what Chaz is for us Brandon Marshall in Denver. Same difference.

Armond, truefully speaking Russell was extremely focused on getting better as a QB mechanics wise and as a player. The weight thing with him is a lack of understanding what image he’s portraying. It is a sign of his immaturity more than anything. He’s really thinking as long as I work on the more imporant things I’m not worried about my weight. When he should’ve known the whole world was watching his weight because that’s will they can see. He was warned and he didn’t take it seriously. And it pissed Cable off. He just doesn’t get the whole concern for that and that’s what’s disappointing. Everything he does is and always will be extra scrutinized and they have told him that over and over again. It was inexcusable. He worked very hard all offseason and let that undo all of it because of the perception in the media and with the fans. Also he really is a better player when he’s right around 260lbs. He’s just more lively.
He needs to grow up………………period

The so-called regression is very easy to understand if you understand football.
Two new rookie WR’s and the lack of a consistent running game. No Chaz, no JLH and no running game with a subpar Oline to boot. What’s so hard to understand about that? Hell if you can’t see that it affects Tom Brady how could it not affect JaMarcus Russell. Rady Moss is playing hurt and they can’t run because the Oline is ineffective. You go from an all world offense to an average one in a hurry.
October 13th, 2009 at 12:37 am
priest, we don’t understand football. So explain to us why the Raiders haven’t cracked the 5 win mark in 6 straight seasons.
October 13th, 2009 at 12:37 am
The Titans are 0 and 5 due to injuries and the loss of Haynesworth. The chemistry has changed and they don’t hae their playmakers. It’s common sense except in here.
October 13th, 2009 at 12:42 am
OK, I’ll humor you just this once. NO OFFENSE!!! get it? NO PLAYMAKERS!! make sense?
Of course it doesn’t look who I’m talking to.

Bring us the puppeteer
Cable might not be a good coach, but Al Davis is really responsible for this Raiders mess
By LOWELL COHN
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
It’s a shame Tom Cable had to stand up there at the Monday afternoon news conference and answer tough questions about how bad the Raiders are. The disgraceful state of the Raiders is not primarily his fault, although he’s a bad coach who certainly must take part of the blame.
The Raiders are a league-wide stain because the man at the top can’t do it anymore. The man at the top has ruined the Raiders. The man at the top is Al Davis. Davis should have been in the interview room behind the podium taking the heat, answering for the monstrosity that is his creation and his creation alone.
Cable was there looking pained and uncomfortable in the first place because no one who can coach, no one whom anyone respects around the league will be head coach for Davis. This is not news. It’s a well-known fact. The Raiders are a death trap for serious coaches and only the mediocre and the desperate and perhaps those with no pride choose to involve themselves with Davis.
Davis should have been there answering why his coaches always are dreadful — of course, Jon Gruden was an exception. Davis should have been there explaining why his quarterback is such a dud despite Davis’ assurance JaMarcus Russell is the real thing.
Davis should have been there explaining why Darrius Heyward-Bey can’t get free and why the offensive line can’t protect and the defense can’t defend and the players already don’t seem to care. Davis needs to explain why his talent is so crummy compared to the talent on almost every other team in the league.
Davis should have been there explaining why he can’t sell out games, why he has no front office to speak of besides himself, why the record is so bad year after year. He should have been there explaining so many things.
Instead Cable stood behind the lectern uttering absurdities like, “One positive I took from it, there were some run seams there.”
Run seams in a 44-7 blowout loss to the Giants? The man congratulated himself on seeing run seams? It’s like saying the house burned down but he saved a coffee cup.
Another Cable absurdity — and this was the big whopper — “My faith is not lessened. It’s not broke down. We can be a good football team. My faith and belief in this team is very high.”
To which we reply: No. No. No. No. No.
No right-thinking person, no sane person, no reasonable observer of the NFL can have faith and belief in this outrage that is the Oakland Raiders. No one. There can be no faith because the man at the top has lost touch with modern football and every glaring flaw, every football abomination results from that. And you know it.
Everyone knows it except for Davis and those close to him who whisper silliness in his ear. You feel they live in an alternate universe, these Raiders people, a universe in which everything bad appears good.
Because Davis was not there to answer hard questions, Cable had to hear things like: How is it that things have reverted to how bad they were his first year? He had no good answer for this.
Or, will he consider dropping the offensive play-calling — a clear insinuation that his play-calling isn’t the tops? “I don’t know that,” he said. It wasn’t much of an answer, but what could the poor guy say?
Or, why did JaMarcus Russell take a five-step drop in the shotgun formation? “No, the quarterback should drop three steps in the shotgun,” Cable said, making you wonder why no one told Russell, or maybe why Russell didn’t hear.
Or, will he change quarterbacks? “That’s the least of my concerns,” he said, “although it is a concern.”
Or, how does he plan to keep this downward-plummeting team motivated? “It’s what we do,” he said. “It’s our job.”
Impertinent question to the reader: Does that mean he’s doing a bad job? Impertinent answer to the reader: Sure it does.
On other occasions, Cable says he will stay the course. He likes that phrase — stay the course. It sounds so nautical. Well, here’s a bulletin. He needs to find another course. He needs to change course fast.
But he can’t do that. Whatever he tries is hopeless. Why?
Because Davis, the man charting the course, lost his compass long ago.

Great post, stupid!
October 13th, 2009 at 12:45 am
priest, we haven’t won in the past 6 years because we’ve had no players? Is that your answer? 6 years with no players? Think it’s time for an ownership/GM change?
October 13th, 2009 at 12:46 am
oooh, you called me stupid.
October 13th, 2009 at 12:53 am
priesttj, you asked about Branch#33 earlier, think hes doing a good job,the future is #33 and# 34 at safety. Priesttj, got to laugh when I read youre posts cuz I hear youre voice at the old 1050,wish the Raiders had a real call in station format.maybe someday
October 13th, 2009 at 12:53 am
NOoooooooooooooooooooo………………..how’s that? does that answer your question? We have plenty of playmakers now they’re just very young. It’s called a rebiuld.
When are you going to understand that I don’t agree with anything you have to say……………..period? so stop talking to me…….gnite!
October 13th, 2009 at 12:54 am
priest, i’ll ask you again:
since you believe a lack of players is the reason we’ve sucked for 6 straight years, wouldn’t you also believe it’s time for new upper management in Oakland?
October 13th, 2009 at 12:55 am
priest is on the radio, Gilbert? Is he one of those idiots who calls in or something?
October 13th, 2009 at 1:07 am
priest, we’ve been rebuilding for 6 years? And, upper management is not to blame? Go ahead, accuse us again of not knowing anything about football.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:09 am
priest, I’m going to address you because you’re calling out people who are critical of the team, and making blanketed insults about them, and I’m one of them.
October 13th, 2009 at 2:08 am
enough is enough. I defended Russell for too long. the guy has no pocket presence or even mobility. The 1st 4 weeks the protection was there. The game vs the Texans too many dropped balls and the weeks before that? He always has someone to blame but never talks about how hes the leader or anything you want to hear from your starting qb. Trade for Tarvaris Jackson, the guy is mobile, strong arm, and has a whole lot better accuracy. Guy deserves to start and we should give it to him. And re-do the offensive line AGAIN. Super Mario has been pretty consistent and Gallery does what he does. After the center spot and right side must be redone
October 13th, 2009 at 3:07 am
Oh yeah were just loaded at playmakers sure man DHB is just making Cris Carter and Dilfer look like dummies. My favorite was they interviewed Papa before the Giants game and he said the Raider D line is as good as the Gman’s ? Seriously anyone thinks a Brady would look as bad as Jruss even with this garbage squad he would still be a leader not sitting on the bench on opening drive and just looking confused yeah sure. Next time Jruss shows good footwork will be the first time go ahead and play that bad in Oakland and get ready for some furious fans.

Black Hole of Oakland
———-
I think that is a very accurate post. Seriously, when coaches in college make 5x what any Oakland HC makes, it tells you something. People say it isnt about the money when it comes to a coach… that is crap. They earn their checks.
Does Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer or Mack Brown continually produce 3-7 teams?
Nope, they sure done.
Coaches are like players in the sense they have payed their dues and get paid accordingly. They have earned those checks and in this day and age, you get what you pay for.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:32 am
i didn’t watch the game on sunday…
i didn’t listen to it either…
didn’t even follow it on nfl.com…
i told the wife about 3:30 that the raiders were playing… she was surprised that i was doing yard work instead of following the game…
because sunday was the first time in years that i didn’t follow the raider game…
but, i did check the score at about quarter to four… i think it was 41-7…
i see Jacarcass threw 13 times… i see Jacarcass fumbled 3 times… i see we ran fewer than 40 plays in the game…
some people want to blame everybody… i don’t know… being defeated shows… the raiders were defeated before the game even started…
in my opinion something happened between the end of the San Diego game and the beginning of the Chiefs game… i don’t know what it is… it would be intersting to find out…
clearly, we have a serious lack of talent on the o-line… due to a couple of injuries, we’re starting guys that probably wouldn’t make most teams…
our d-line has visibly lost it’s spirit… they’re just not doing it…
being defeated shows…
i don’t know how good our non-linemen are right now (exept DHB, right now he sucks)… because both of our lines are hurting… this is what happens when linemen are secondary considerations…
Coach Gibbs proved that an outstanding line can make an average backfield great… it’s why he traded Schroeder to us…
we’re proving the opposite… that a schitty o-line makes an entire team suck…
some guys last week was saying we need to be patient…
i don’t think that’s true…
some of you can scoff… but there is no doubt in my mind… with my limited abilities and experience… that i could do a better job at running this team than Al Davis…
in fact… i would bet that half the posters on this blog could do a better job at running this team than Al Davis…
even that evil, ridiculous, annoying little pissant Rack of Crap could do a better job of running this team than Al Davis…
and yes, i know i have been a big Davis supporter in the past…
but as a fellow businessman… i have no problem telling Al Davis that “results matter”…

I know that Nnandi is a class act, but he is the only one with the voice that could say something like Carlos Rogers.
Carlos Rogers speaks the truth!!
“It not only starts with the players, coaches,” Rogers said, per the Associated Press. “It starts with the ownership.”

when Jmac rolls out he looks good and not overweight, imo. We already worse than bad so stay the course with Jmac.If not he will go somewhere else and torch us,imo
October 13th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Here’s a take I just thought of, as a possible hmmm…
Al better be careful too about holding on too long cos the Raiders franchise could end up thru abuse relocating after sale to somewhere like San Antonio with a new nickname etc (like the Titans). If Al keeps killing the value and rep of the org like he’s been doing. Maybe that’s his plan…to just totally write it off, so that no one can ever be “the raiders” but himself.

Football is one sport where I believe team chemistry is so important over any other sporst I can think of. YOu depend and trust on each other so much for coverage and executions. We dont have it because we dont have enough players with heart. We won again during the Gannon years because we had heart. Right now we dont. All talent in the world will do nothing unless you have heart. When you got heart, you have professionlism and chemistry.

October 13th, 2009 at 5:58 am
Having heart don’t make you good. Like 4eva pointed out Fargas has heart but he’s not good. In the gannon years. We were just good. Veteran leadership was the key, guys who accepted their responsibilities and came in and worked their asses off ala Gannon at Qb. Jerry Rice, Brown, even bad moon Rison came in and played well for us. These guys were what the raiders need to be today. We won’t get it……Aso has heart and im sure other guys have heart but we simply aren’t good at all
October 13th, 2009 at 6:06 am
Btw good morning 4eva ur up bright and early
October 13th, 2009 at 6:12 am
I agree with team chemistry and believe that most of the players on our team do have heart. I also think its hard to buy in week in and week out when any suggestions that you make as a player are overruled by the man up stairs.
Al signs the checks, he isnt with the coaches going over film or preparing for the week, yet he has the final say in what plays and players will be ran on Sundays.

I was at the game. Totally disgusting. Guys we will be lucky to win 3 games this year then we will probably waste our 1st rounder and win 2-4 games next year and watch the Pats take some stud who they will turn into a star. A fish rots from the head and believe me this franchise has rotted. This has been the worst 7 years of rooting for a team I have ever experienced (and Im a Mets & Knicks fan) and unfortunately I really dont see an end to it in order to turn this around it would take at LEAST 3 years and that would be 3 years of excellent management and personnel decisions made by a top notch GM, which are things this franchise is incapable of doing. Unfortunately that light at the end of the tunnel is just an oncoming train. Sad.

RMR post #371, That about sums it all up. Where is Al when the team is slipping
beneath the waves ? Al is the guy behind the curtain, but pay no attention to the curtains. Al you coward, come out and explain why the last 6 years look like the first 3. You have lived off the mstique for far too long. You have pointed the finger at everyone but yourself. Now we are pointing the finger at you, the
middle one of course. It is time to salvage this once feared and copied team
and leave it to a new generation to repair the damage if it can be. You are 7 years younger than my father , he’s 88, and he can’t remember what I said 2 minutes ago ( sorry pop ). Maybe that is what has happened to you Al. You
probably think Shell and Upshaw are running the sweep left. Sad!

cowher gruden holmgren. i’ll take any of them at this point. how they would win with these scrubs is beyond me. there is nobody on the waiver wire capable of returning a kickoff to at least the 20. or an o lineman that can block? is what we’ve got all thats available????

MOVE THE TEAM OUT OF THAT RAT HOLE YOU CALL OAKLAND!
The fans there are clueless! They still drink Davis flavored Kool-Aid.
Oakland is the worst city in america Fact!
Time to move to a new stadium and fill it with fans who have at least a high school education. People who have lives and are not led by Davis.
Just give me some intelligent fans PLEASE!
