Pierce: It felt like a scrimmage
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009 at 11:14 pm in Oakland Raiders.
A transcript of an interview with Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce was sent along by the folks at Sirius Satellite Radio:
Antonio Pierce: “I don’t like knocking teams, but right now (the Raiders) are struggling. We were playing that game the other day and honestly if felt like a scrimmage. It felt like a practice. It felt like we were going against our offense or something like that, like the tempo, I mean, as far as there was no vibe of a one-two, or trying, or effort from the Raiders at all from a defensive standpoint against their offense.
“ We are getting three and outs and you don’t hear nobody like, ‘Hey, let’s go,’ trying to pick the guys up, rallying them up, getting guys fired up. There was nothing. It was quiet. A guy gets sacked or somebody gets beat, they just get up. No yelling. It was shocking to be out there in that game and get that kind of feeling. The good thing I think about our team and what happened in that game, we went out there and handled business regardless.
“ We didn’t take our game down to that level and we kept it up to the level that we want to be playing at, a championship level. It’s sad because I grew up a Raiders fan living in Los Angeles, but that organization right now, they need somebody to pick them up.”

Everyone keeps blaming this QB, it’s easy to use him as a scapegoat. Tom Cable hasn’t properly motivated this team to want to compete. Simple as that.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
These bums are just collecting checks…….period
October 13th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Man jerry, you’re late on the report already read it on pft and prosportsdaily. But yea he pretty much said what all us fans feel already and what cable should be saying but can’t.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
dont you guys think that this is the best thign that coudl have happen to us in years?
I mean now the players are getting called out by their peers and everyone has pride. Maybe they didnt care as a team but after being called out, I guarantee you they have no choice now. Sometimes it takes to be insulted to make you defensive. It’s like being in an argument. Sometimes you are pushed into a corner and suddenly you bite and fight like a mad dog.
I have been complaining about lack of intensity and I guarantee you this is exactly what we needed.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Garcia said the same thing, that players were just collecting checks. I believed it then and I believe this now.
These bums know tha if they lose the media will blame Al Davis theplayers never get called out in the media. The media will go as far as saying that Al Davis calls the plays and runstheteam so we can’t win.
It’s a biult in excuse and has been for years, but wen winners like Jerry Rice and Romo and Woodson were here they didn’t listento those excuses. Gannon got after their ass andmde them compete. That’s how we went to the SB.
Gannon took away all the excuses that Tim Brown and all the other selfish players just excepted. All Tim wanted was to go to the Probowl every year and get in the HOF, winning was never his priority. That’s why when we made it there he had his worse game, he was petrified to actually be on that stage. While the two Jerry’s were out there competing he was standing around satisfied with just being there.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
Alsigod, it doesn’t mean a thing if the plyers on this teamdon’t stop excepting getting beat.
We need the Nnamdi’s and the Howards to say that. We need Russell after he gts sacked to get up andget in someones face. We need Russell to demand that his young WR’s grow up. When Murphy doesn’t make an effort to get a ball he needs to hear from the QB. Untill he does that other players on ther teams wont mean diddly.
Until Seymour and Kelly demand tha the LB’s on this team play well and attack runners this doesn’t mean squat. e need Morrison ad Nnamdi to demad excellence from their teammates. But Nnamdi just wont do it.
Huff and the res of thse playe will run through a brick wall for Nnamdi but he doesn’t demand it from them. Like Ray Lewis does he wont let thosegu’s have abad game.
Rod Woodson was the same way he was in everybodies face, Nanmdi wont breath a word…………period. Kirk doesn’t either because he knows he sucks worse than they do.
We have no leaders……..period
Just a bunch of athletic followers.
Russell has to change this NOW!!
October 13th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
There’s two things that can happen now, and they both will give us answers.
It is true. Players have pride. But in order to make a statement and win, you need more than that, you need heart. We will see if the Raiders have both this week. All the critics are licking their chops with these statements by Pierce. This is the sort of thing they wanted in order to take their “Jamarcus is not a leader” comments and run with them. Along with every other comment about the organization being dysfunctional and all that good stuff.
So the players (specially Jamarcus) can either come out and light up the field and overcome any mistake and show everyone that they have what it takes to win, or they fold under pressure at the first incompletion, penalty, or missed assignment and have to endure another blow out loss at home.
Either way, we find out what kind of team we have, as if we didn’t know already.
Pierce didn’t exactly called them out, what he did was point out the obvious to those who might not see through the pink colored glasses of hope.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
Priest,
As a manager and a sales guy, I have seen this effect before with the many people and situations I have witnessed. Everybody has a threshold. Sometimes it takes to be insulted (with cause) to this level to have a bite in you. I have seen people that dont care and do their own thing but when it gets highlighted like this nationally, they’ve now been put in a corner and there’s only one way out.
They might have tried to get away with this but now they know every tv analyst will be looking for these signs. Sometimes an issue like this brings the team together. I am excited again.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Like I said yesterday. Just going through the motions… hard to argue that, now that an actual player that experienced it first hand confirms it.
As much as Cable likes to deny the Hanson incident has any effect on the team, I think it does. If not on himself alone. It’s gotta be tough having to think about the possibility of going to jail, having to gameplan, and knowing that with each loss you get one giant step closer to being the next Kiffin.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Agree wholeheartedly!! But Garcia I believe told them. They didn’t believe it.
This team has way too much talent to ever get beat by anyone like that. The don’t put forth the effort it takes to win. I saw on one play MBush get ran right over for a sack by a SAFETY a freakin’ SAFETY no one can tell me that’s not a lack of FOCUS. And Russell said nothing. He cannot do that……..period.
I want to see a fight on our sideline between our own players and then I’ll believe the care.
I’vebeen hesitant to say this about Russell due to the constant criticism he already gets that makes no sense. But this team is in fact waiting for him to lead them. Until he does they will not respond.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am
OK, hope you’re right but the leadership thing is real. That may work for a few game but until leaders step forward and make a differece they’ll just sink back into their own misery.
However, I agree that this Hanson incident is a distraction. They think they may lose their coach.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am
Armond, as much as it hurts, I agree. This team is gutless and the are used to having an excuse to rely on.
Until Russell says we aint taking it no more, they will continue to take it.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:10 am
Garcia or Gannon saying something is one thing. Getting your a$$ kicked on national tv and having the opponent pity you is another.
that’s what I am talking about. Say you have an employee that shows up late to work every day and gets away with it. Now you put the camera on and tell that employee you goign to monitor them. I guarantee you that employee goign to put in the effort (at least in the short term).
The players know that the camera will be looking for signs that the players are not supporting each other. They have no choice but to at least shows it on Sunday.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:10 am
preist let me give u 2 examples from last year why i they have to get ridof several guys. u rememver last year when higgins got tha td run against buffalo and got tackled 8 yards deep in the endzone. donte whitner was pissed higgins hotdogged it for 30 yards so he hit him late. jlh thought it was more important to do a stupid dance than smack him in the face and none of his teammates ran downfield to smack him either. jlh couldve gotten hurt on a cheap shot and they just take it. th ebroncos look ready to punk them at pregame this year and they just except it. the scrimmage against the 49ers made me sick. even the 8er players said they expected them just to say something and nothing happened. they are a bunch of punks and lie grove told that one guy they have no heart and neither does the qb.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:12 am
Priest, I saw that Bush play too. When I saw the replay that it was a DB running him over, I couldnt believe it. However you noticed how he rectified himself with a block on Justin Tuck. Right now, they need a shot in the arm and I believe Pierce just delivered to them. I dont care about the long term. I just want a few little steps. It takes a little crawling before you walk and run.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:22 am
russell makes me so sick with his ho hum even keeled crap. its and excuse to not step and show some fight. they dont cuz he dont fight. i am questioning his heart now cuz u dont see him get mad at anything. he doesnt do anything to inspire his teammates and he seems content with it. its time to bench him just to see how much juice someonelse gives us and we better look at getting a young qb next year. whether its vince young troy smith or someone in the draft. i garuantee u tebow would get better results than this cuz of his demeanor to bring out the best in people. we have 2 3rd picks and one of those should be to get him for his inspiration alone. this team needs leaders more than it needs players.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:27 am
pierce is a good dude and a raiders fan. he is not a hater and gave an astute observation on what alot of players feel. they have no heart and al davis has created an environment that allows this to continue.his fueds with coaches and lack of a true personnell dpt for so long has worn out for too long. that hanson incident happened while he was away in ny over an issue with guess what a coaching issue. namdi is soft and broderline gay with his approach. he doesnt demand anything. he doesnt go crazy at all and morrison is soft as hell. he cant lay anybody out. u see how after that td he had a clear shot on a 180 pound wr and still couldnt lay him out? hell he fell down instead of the wr. back 7 my azz!!!!!!
October 14th, 2009 at 12:31 am
the problem with Morrison is he waits for the runner rather than runs to them. It all about momentum. The guy that is at full speed will always run over a guy standing pat. I dont think any of us can recall the last time Kirk ran at somebody and laid the boom on them. I hope they play mitchell more. He may get burned but you know he will lay someone out at some point. We need that jolt of intensity out there.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:34 am
russell soft demeanor carries onto the field. he plays slow cuz he is allowed to.it has nothing to do with all of these other issues. he is slow in a 2 minute drill and they let him get away with it. they dont help him up and the wr arent going after the ball cuz he isnt as accurate as much he doesnt inspire them to play tougher. a coworker told me this weeks ago about how guys see him off to the side with “i do my thing and u do yours” type of attitude and how eventually theyre not going to play for him. nobody even helps him up after a sack as much now. he has to step it up or he will lose this team. he is too careless about his weight and his attitude comes off as very entitled.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:35 am
Armond, let me say this I’ve been watching this kid play for almost 5 years. What you are seeing in him now is reall toned down. At LSU he was the consumate leader and competitor. This kid can compete with the best of them trust me. I’ve seen him do it. You saw him do it this year in the SD and KC games when the game was on the line.
I saw him do that at LSU, what you are seeing is a kid who lacks confidence and is unsure of himself and his surroundings. In thos e two games mentioned he just let it rip like in college. Until he starts to play with that same swagger from down one to down game over he will look like he doesn’t care. But trust me HE DOES. Something is holdg him back a lack of confidence is what I think it is.
I’m tired Adios!
October 14th, 2009 at 12:36 am
damn i have to start editing my comments. oh hell if they dont care i dont. alisgod kirk dont have any dog in him at all. his personality is cool but he plays like shiit. we have to get rid of him brown kelly warren and get young guys who are natural leaders. some say get a dt inthe draft or ol first. i say u get the best player and the best player is someone who can play and lead. brandon spikes make his teammates better by his play and his theatrics. we need some CHARATCERS like the old days. not some quiet character guys like namdi who do their job. we need some mean azzholes who dont give a fuuk.maybe we should look at vick next year who has SOMETHING TO PROVE. we need some on field thugs who want beat u up and laugh about it. mitchell needs to start to give some physical toughness to that defense.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:51 am
priest i saw him too but he is a pro now and u wonder why is he holding himself back. he carries his swag right in all of those flashy pictures. i want him to be great but he has to assert that on his own. he doesnt seem like a self motivator. cable is a joke with his stay the course crap. play huff at fs with mitch at ss and start with barnes at rt. he is holding this team back with his false belief in these guys. play the right damn people coach its your job. hell start desmond bryant instead of kelly or warren. he does nothing to motivate this team right and they have quit on him atleast subconsciously.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:05 am
Same thing the Bucs said about the Raiders after the Super Bowl. This isn’t the first time an opponent of the Raiders said it was like a scrimmage.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:14 am
Gannon threw away all of the video games and toys in the locker room when he got here in ‘99 because, as he put it, KC used to just come in here and thrash us time and time again. When we have coaches and players who don’t like to lose, and aren’t afraid to hurt Al’s feelings in doing what it takes to avoid losing, we get results.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:21 am
That’s the reason no one liked Gannon. He came here for the money, and to win. No other reason. Didn’t cross his mind once rather or not his teammates liked him, and it still hasn’t, years after retiring. Part of what makes a winner a winner is not caring what losers think of them.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:32 am
AlisGod, if you don’t understand the differences between manual laborers and NFL football players, please refrain drawing comparisons between managing the two.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:38 am
Honestly, Louis Murphy’s been the only spark plug but he’s a rook with not much room to talk. His drops, fumbles, poor routes misreads, inability to create consistent seperation, lack of blocking skill and jinx imposed by the refs leave him very little clout to motivate his fellow Raiders.
Thats Russell’s job, but he doesn’t seem like the vocal type does he?
Oakland seem to need a Richard Seymour on offense.

Here here. Its why Gruden’s strategy worked. He had a mouth piece who led by championship example.
The coach is emmasculated by Davis and the old man waxes rhapsodic every time a player mentions the good old days. Enough to keep them on for years with out production apparently.
As long as sloth by loathesome individuals is tolerated, Oakland will not succeed.
Frankly, RUSSELL has the power to wield. To have a say in who stays, who needs to do what.
He’s the franchise. He needs to speak up and say what and more improtantly WHO he needs.
Some one needs to be the man down in Oakland.

The stupid secret practices and closed training camp to the Nation..is what really holds them back imo
these players arent accountable ..theres not even 100 fans at their practices…its BS
October 14th, 2009 at 4:06 am
Shortly before training camp, Davis grilled Marshall, the team’s new defensive coordinator, during a meeting. As Marshall struggled to answer a question from the owner, Hanson assisted the veteran coach by giving hand signals from the back of the room. Cable, Hanson said, seemed to have been angered by his actions
Dysfunction…
October 14th, 2009 at 4:21 am
In the San Diego game we saw that our guys are actually talented enough to hang with just about anybody.
They knocked the hell out the Chargers and were sending people off the field.
It is all about pride. They lost the game and went into the tank afterwards and accepted that they were losers.
What a bunch of punks! “oh the refs cheated us, we can’t win, our prevent defense didn’t work, forget it”.
October 14th, 2009 at 4:21 am
Of all the criticism heaped on Davis, Cable, the coaches and the team, the withering words of Antonio Pierce must hurt the most.
To be called out by a fellow professional for not trying enough, not caring enough is the lowest point any team has ever sunk. And Pierce is not a hater, he is a Raiders fan.
Shame on all in Almeda. But only one man can fix this. Al Davis, Pierce’s observations are far more damaging than anything Kiff did or said. If they don’t prompt a reaction from you, then there is no hope for you or this team.
Come on, Al. Be man enough to admit you were wrong and make the changes. Pierce is calling you out as well.

These guys need Richard Simmons to teach them about pride !
October 14th, 2009 at 4:30 am
I have to agree that the comparisons between NFL players and your average “Joe Employee” is pretty erroneous. If “Joe” got millions of dollars in guaranteed money, working for a company that sucked, he would probably just keep his head down and keep collecting the money, realizing the whole time that he would need to find another job pretty soon. These guys are making money way beyond what we average fans can comprehend — so the “fire” to play, to succeed, to win has to be internal.
So let’s look at the internal — an owner who doesn’t realize that the game has passed him by; a head coach who is going to be lucky if he is able to skirt going to jail; a locker room with no pride; injuries all about; a quarterback who isn’t a leader; young receivers who aren’t consistent; and tackling? (please!)
A lot of things must change; I don’t see it happening this year, though. But the Raider Nation is the one constant — we will stay strong … we just need a new koolaid recipe!
October 14th, 2009 at 4:31 am
I have some sympathy for the players:
A QB who is inept, unprofessional and still a bling-draped multi-millionaire.
A Coach who is so far out of his depth that he is beyond saving and beyond caring.
A first-round draft pick who can run like the wind but only in straight lines and without the ball.
A MLB who shouts a lot, runs about a lot but who can’t stop anyone heavier than Britney Spears.
An Oline that have lost their technique, their power and their heart.
A Dline that has the highest salary bill in the NFL but couldn’t dominate a row of tackle bags.
But Copenhagen is right, that still doesn’t mean they shouldn’t show a lot more guts and pride.

I agree with a lot of critics that Jamarcus needs to sit. Even if it’s just to show him what it looks like for someone else to lead the team, I think he needs a huge shot of humility. He can spend two quarters on the exercise bike — or, he can stand next to Cable on the sidelines, with his hat on backwards, eating a box of twinkies.
October 14th, 2009 at 4:45 am
Bottom line, if JaWobble is being unprofessional and breaking team rules he must be punished. Otherwise the whole team-ethos is undermined. No player is bigger than the team.
Canning Russell may be expensive but it won’t be a disaster. Look at the Falcons – lost Vick, found Ryan.
Raiders, lose Russell gain Clausen or Bradford or Locker – maybe even Snead in the 2nd. 2010 is looking like the best draft class for a decade.
October 14th, 2009 at 4:49 am
About the funniest/saddest thing I saw in New York last weekend was someone carrying a sign that read: Support Mercy Killings – Euthanize Al Davis.
October 14th, 2009 at 4:50 am
Now you all see why I have been LIVID the last few days. I was at the game and I can concur with Pierce’s comments.
I had good seats and close to the field and the game just didn’t look right. The players went through the motions. Look to the bench and guys just hanging out…no emotion nothing,.
After fumbles and all the B.S the players had an “oh well” component to it.
That game made me sick and embarrassed to even follow the team that day.
They did quit that day. Why? I don’t even care to know.
Get some freekn pride and try to compete this weekend.
That’s all I am asking for these days. Just compete and stop disrespecting the fans who pay good money and invest time following this team.
Because they obviously don’t care about disrespecting themselves!

I played high school ball at at school with almost no big players. I was the nose tackle and weighed 190 lbs.
At the end of my senior year I made “all league”. I was no great player, but I had pride and never quit and I did what I could to punish the opposition any time I could. Blasting my helmet into any open area on ballcarriers going down or in a pile, always hitting people right at the whistle, biting and scratching, grabbing grass to not get blown out of the hole.
I can’t understand why these guys even play football if they don’t have the desire to man up.

Every team loses. But you try to earn the respect of your opponents by punishing them or at least making them thing….”we don’t want to play those guys again”.
We have no dirty players.
While I was watching the game and noticed that no defensive players on the other team get hit around the piles or at the whistle. WE NEED GUYS LIKE WIZ!

Yeah, reading Pierce’s comments was a blow. Generally you dont have a player make comments like that. HOWEVER, I think it carries a lot of wait since he grew up a Raider fan.
I believe the issue is organization more than anything else. This isnt the 70’s where mono vs mono works, its much more sophisticated than that.
We dont pay our coaches, we only pay our players and even then the owner supercedes everyone.
I wish Al would try something different and hand the keys over and see how that works for a season instead of doing the same stuck record routine that we have had for 20 years.

Good morning Nation,
I’am really getting sick of Morrison, he showboats on a simple tackle. He hides his tail between his legs on missed tackles. I think Nnamdi, Howard, Seymoure, G-Ellis, need to be the team leaders on D. Getting Mitchell in there to plug the hole while allowing Huff to roam would be a better idea then allowing Morrison to miss tackles. Lets put Trevor scott in the middle with mitchell behind him for the speed factor allowing scott to take on the first blocker and mitchell getting to the ball carrier.
We dont try enough new plays. It was said here that DHB should return kicks, with his speed i’m sure we can get to the 20 at the very least. Run some end arounds, or WR screens anything to have this waist of space contribute. We dont need a fullback in this offense to run the ball, all he does is plug the hole with no push, so our guys are running into our own guy.
Lets not start a game with a playaction pass for an incompletion, teams dont fear our run game so it makes no sense. DHB needs to fight off of tight bump coverage, you do this by running slants not seam routes. Run some crossing patterns get the opposing D’s corners to get a lil confused enough with the seam routes. Like Gruden did do what you need to do so long as you win big Al cant say a F—ing thing.
Morrison enough with you’re twitter updates, let us know when you win a game. OMG Stanfor routt just stop.. stop.. stop you’re not Nnamdi so quit with you’re press coverage you’re getting burnt bad on slants. Johnson another Dieon Sanders protege what a waist, got payed and said cool i got mine.
Blame the offense all you want for the defense getting tired, but let me say the D gave up almost 21 points in the first quarter they got themselves tired.
We need the big Oline again i’m tired of this zone blocking crap, make 1 cut and hit the hole bullcrap.
M-Bush is a power runner not a cut back runner, Mcfaddens talent lies in him making his moves that he see’s, not the hole the coaches tell him to hit.

Its like the players know no-matter what they do we gonna lose. The tuck-rule what a load of BS.And it carries over into EVERY GAME.They can play as hard as they want but the refs WILL TAKE THE GAME FROM THEM.I been watching this un-furl 4years.;..NO MATTER HOW WELL THEY PLAY THE REFS TAKE THE GAME AWAY FROM THEM.Now tell me how hard you gonna try after this BS keeps happening time after time. And no I dont sound like a complainer its THE TRUTH

I like Tom Cable a lot, but he has not shown me the mettle of a true, respected NFL coach. We need a strong GM and a coach working together, to re-set the solid foundation for this football organization. Parcells went to Miami and the turnaround was pretty quick.
Atlanta was “rock bottom” two years ago.
It’s our turn … it can happen … we just need to start it soon.
Fire Cable/Bench Jamarcus/Richard Seymour and Zach Miller become the new captains
October 14th, 2009 at 5:22 am
Simple keys to victory
1) Trade for Mcnabb by giving next year first round pick
2) Trade for Shaun Rogers give RR his fav player kelly n second rounder
3) Sign Brooks to be a veteran leader for the LB crew.
4) Sign best available RT or start Khalif there instead of da bums.
5) Fire Cable n hire Shanahan
6) Start Walker over DHB.
We need to inject new blood into this team, Mcnabb will be just or better than what Gannon was.

October 14th, 2009 at 5:30 am
Meanwhile Tom Brady scuffs his knee’s when he falls and the closest player to him gets the personal foul.
Our guy scores a touchdown throws his hands up in the air to thank GOD and thats a penalty. Then the other team scores and the whole team is dancing around but thats ok. Phillip rivers throws a ball at our players head in anger and does not get ejected. DHB gets manhandled way more then 5yards passed the “LOS” and nothing. Then come the holding penalties, they never get called when our guys get held wich is alot.
October 14th, 2009 at 5:31 am
JR shouldn’t be in the playing in the NFL, at best he is a UFL player just like Losman.
October 14th, 2009 at 5:33 am
Say what you want about our team, but guess what werew not the worst yet, we do have a win lol. The titans, the Cheifs, and numerous others are far worse so far. Brady Quinn is selling his home it’s so bad in cleveland, T.O. is already sick of Buffalo…
Well after the next 2 weeks Jmac wont have to worry about his critics, cause the focus will turn to DHB after Crabtree catches 4 balls for 40 yards and doubles DHB’s production in 1 game lol.
Anyways my phylosophy is this, 32 teams start each year wanting to win the big game, thats the goal.
Only 1 team wins it so in my opinion 31 teams faild and are looking to next year. I think we just like to get a headstart on them lol.

Do NOT trade for McNabb — we can’t afford him and he is NOT the answer!
Shaun Rogers – are you KIDDING ME?!
Derrick Brooks – if he would come, that would be a TREMENDOUS boost for our defense;
Sign best available RT — I agree; get rid of Routt!
Fire Cable; even if we just have another interim, we can start looking for a strong candidate — there are other younger up-and-comers with strong organizations, who could pair up with a strong GM. Madden could probably help woo a good GM for the Silver and Black.
Start Walker? Might as well see what he has left in the tank (before he goes down again)
October 14th, 2009 at 5:39 am
Yeah how old is D.Brooks and we don’t play cover 2 which is all he has ever played. Yeah we all ready have a GM he is also the owner and he ain’t giving that role up if anything I can see him be more stubborn and sticking with jruss for 2 more yrs cause Al will blame his laziness on the coaches.

October 14th, 2009 at 5:46 am
Hey, I have a brilliant idea … let’s package the rest of our already overpaid has-beens and ship them off to Daniel Snyder — he’s an idiot and will take our expensive trash and give us a bunch of draft picks.
And while we’re at it – I would trade him JaMarcus for Jason Campbell – straight up – in a heartbeat!
October 14th, 2009 at 5:46 am
I most definatly DIS AGREE tbone. The tuck rule 4 instance…
The refs have taken many-a-game from us,no matter how hard we punch someone in the mouth.Untill EVERTONE SEE’S THIS IT WILL CONTINUE 2B A PROBLEM.Big Al is about honor and the powers that be know this so they know he wont cry and complain about the refs. But come-on…when we get CHEATED OUT OF A S/B because the refs wanna split hairs over a call thats never been called or been called sinse well I say …
NO MATTER HOW HARD WE PUNCH SOMEONE IN THE MOUTH THE REFS WILL STILL TAKE A GAME OR EVEN A SUPER BOWL FROM US.
I have seen it many times
October 14th, 2009 at 5:50 am
D. Brooks would be good if we didnt have Howard in that position already.
If Howard were to get injured, then it would be a consideration.
October 14th, 2009 at 5:54 am
Louis Murphy’s TD against the doltz
On the same day Jacoby Jones of the texans same catch but its ruled a TD.
When the refs KEEP taking away points and catches and us getting penalties and other teams not…
Man I’m not trying 2 make excuses b/c they getting paid millions but they are after all professional athletes…but after years of all the bs they already know how its gonna turn out.Gawd I HATE crying complainers but no matter how you sclice it,the players know what gonna happen

4eva:
As much as I’d like to buy your conspiracy theory, let me just point out that it was not a bad call that cost us the San Diego game — it was the defense’s inability to hold a lead. Against KC, there were easily some overlooked calls against our DBs that could’ve (and should’ve) been called. I strongly believe that Goodell has the integrity to investigate and expose any blatant bias toward one team or another on the part of the officials. When we start playing good, consistent, fundamental football, the “calls” will start leveling off – you’ll see.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:02 am
You can see it in their eyes, imo
October 14th, 2009 at 6:04 am
Good Morning Nation!!!
That is why that when the refs do that, the team has to take that in stride and steal the game from both the opponent and the refs. I hear ya on that one, 4eva, but if you remember after that stupid tuck rule was called, the team just let Brady march down the field and get a field goal…twice.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:07 am
I know this is going back a ways, but I know of no other call in NFL history that screwed a team as bad as the touchdown that was ruled NOT a touchdown when the Houston Oilers played the Steelers in the AFC Championship back in the 70s. I think that killed their whole franchise. Ain’t no refs gonna kill us!!!

1st Round 2010 … either Suh (Nebraska), Hardy (Mississippi), Jones (Syracuse) or Cody (Alabama) — all are highly-rated D-line players. Then, pick up the highest-rated O-lineman in Round Two, or perhaps squeeze out two second-rounders with a trade …
October 14th, 2009 at 6:10 am
Exactly…the team must overcome that and keep playing. The best example of that, imo was that BS non TD call on Murphy. After that call, they ran back on the field to kick a FG…what happened after that, I don’t know…
October 14th, 2009 at 6:10 am

Trent Dilfer said on NFL Live last night we should trade for Brady Quinn, while he has little to no trade value. He has the leadership, footwork, work ethic etc that Russell doesn’t …
Can’t say I disagree with him. If the Browns would take Fargas & Walker for Quinn i’d pull the trigger in a heartbeat!
what would it be like to have a QB that actually puts the work in? not overweight, not late to meetings, no missed meetings, stays after practice to develop a chemistry with the young WR’s. We couldn’t get much worse at the QB position so WHY NOT ???

Somebody just needs to “accidentally” fall on JaMarcus during practice; then we could IR him, move ahead without the controversy and the baggage, and start making headway toward December – a very winnable month for us!
October 14th, 2009 at 6:23 am
As much as I hate Brady Queen, I was thinking the same thing when I heard a clip about him being on the trading block. JaMarcus is going to struggle until he is given true competition. Who better to push them than the #2 quarterback picked that year.
I doubt that the Browns would ask for a whole lot for him right now. Brady has his own struggles, but atleast the guy seems to want it more than JaMarcus. I bet you he wont get fined on the first day of camp for being fat. Or miss weeks of camps. So he’s a little bit of a Queen, but atleast the Queen will compete.

I think it’s funny that everybody is making a big deal about Rush wanting to purchase the Rams.
Goodell was asked about it in his presser and all he said was that he didn’t agree with Rush’s take on McNabb (from 2003). LOL
only 7 NFL players have protested against Rush as an NFL owner.
32 owners vote for/against and the commish & players can do nothing about it. only the Colts owner has said no. haha. people are making a big deal over nothing imo.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:26 am
I hear ya Rockstar. Besides, he already put his house on the market. It was funny because even though I knew Al was going to draft Russell, with Kiff there and his WCO ideas, Quinn would have been a better fit. We got nothing to lose, so why not? Heck, we got nothing to lose so I wish the team plays like it (someday).
October 14th, 2009 at 6:26 am

October 14th, 2009 at 6:26 am
I thought going into the season that Graddy-boy could be a good, stable QB; I still feel that way. I don’t think we need to bring in Quinn, necessarily. McNabb is getting a little old, and he has had a history of injuries; besides, our O-line (right now) would get him killed! Gradkowski could be a good short-term fix until we bring in Tony Pike.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:26 am
Also, while we still have Walker on contract….why isn’t he playing?
October 14th, 2009 at 6:27 am
If we can afford JR then we can afford Mcnabb. Mcnabb would give us more than what GAnnon gave us for four yrs, with a good running game n good coach Mcnabb will guide us to the promised land, we need a good QB to win in this league n Mcnabb is top 10.

Hnwdr… because the Raiders, or should I say the men up top, are “mad at him because he went to have knee surgery without their knowledge”. This team is a utter complete joke. October 14th, 2009 at 6:45 am
I was at the game in New York, near the Raider bench, and I studied J Russ the whole game … both on and off the field. My conclusion is that he is an overpaid, unmotivated bum who has no leadership qualities and doesn’t know that there is a problem. Plus, he doesn’t know how to do a proper check-down — he had multiple receivers open on shorter routes all day long. When receivers dropped passes, he just shrugged it off (Would Peyton Manning do that? Hell no!) Jettison this piece of worthless crap!
October 14th, 2009 at 6:45 am
NATION – wake up, please! McNabb is NOT the answer! By the time he made his way in, endured a couple of coaching changes and got an offensive line built around him, he’d be too old or injured (or both) to perform. Don’t get me wrong – I like McNabb – but this is not the right play. Quinn would be a better choice, but I don’t think we have to go that route either.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:48 am
Stabler wasnt ready when he came out either. He rode dapine for 4years.
Why would ANYONE think Jmac would be further than Stabler or any other QB.

maybe he can guide it

October 14th, 2009 at 6:51 am
I make a prediction: if J Russ plays, we get blown out in the 1st quarter; if they bring in Gradkowski, we at least hang on to the ball and keep it fairly respectable for the first half. HEY AL – ARE YOU LISTENING … CAN YOU HEAR .. THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH?!!!

Execution! Stanford Routt needs to stay on the sidelines and Chris Johnson needs to perform like he did last year.

You know, I still think that JR could make it as a NFL QB, but at this point I would be ecstatic if the raiders traded for Quinn and got him ready to start very soon. They need something to shake things up.
They need the cable of last year, who wasn’t afraid to bench people who were playing like crap. Seriously, what happened to this approach? They actually made players accountable for their playing and it helped as things started to turn at the end of the season. THIS IS WHAT WE NEED AGAIN. Bench DHB until hes ready to play (hes not a bust, but hes not ready to start in the nfl) Bench Murphy if he keeps dropping easy catches. Do the same thing on D with Routt and CJ. I would highly expect CJ to turn it around if he has the potential to get benched.

We remember Gruden and Gannon, but that was a blip on the radar because we sucked before then, we sucked after then.

In my opinion, you could bring in who ever you want coach or player…It wont make a diffrence. The ORGANIZATION is the thing that needs to chage first and foremost. Once that happens then you can change the losing philosophy. No other team allows the players to run over the coaching staff to complain to the owner. Mr. Davis needs to retire, not die, just retire. the 70’s are over…

I am completely shocked at the fall of the 2009 Oakland Raiders. I mean we hired a very qualified Head Coach (11-35 in college, 4-8 in the NFL), a great Defensive Coordinator (run defense usually in the bottom 1/3) and drafted the next Cliff Branch and Jack Tatum while passing on those overrated interior players that other teams mistakenly think are so important!
I am utterly mystified!

Adam Sphincter just tweeted that Langston Walker will resign for Raiders today. Good move and hopefully an admission that the ZBS is a busted flush.
I would stick Paul McQuistan at RG – he and Langston would add some much need bulk and power to the right side of our OLine.

Dakota, at least your other team is doing ok, yeah? LOL…the theme of this year is “Where were you? and Where will you be?”
Where will you be when they do turn this thing around, Nation? hopefully, I’ll still be alive and well enough to enjoy it!!!

The Dolphins and Steelers were the teams of the 70s;
49ers were the team of the 80s;
Cowboys were the team of the 90s …
Does that make us the team of the 00’s?

Payback is a MoFo…..Grampa worked hard all his life for his home….but the younger, greedy, heartless members of his family can’t wait to take it away and put grampa in the nursing home. They rationalize their utter callousness by saying grampa cant get around like he used to, and the house is losing value because he can’t take care of it like he used to. They know better and grampa be damned.
This is Al Davis’ team…he worked hard all his life for it and it’s his right to run it any way he wants….he earned that right….the hell with you self centered punks…you have no claim to the Raiders….pick another team…
I can’t wait for the day you all get old and it’s your turn to be put to pasture to die….stripped off all that means the most to you..and left to lay forgotten and lonely.

__________________________________________
Not that it matters, but we drafted Cliff Branch in the 4th Round; let’s see, who did we draft in the 4th Round this year? Oh that’s right — it’s got potential!
As far as Tatum, he did so well as a First Round pick that Al started to fall in love with DBs … THAT hasn’t worked out so well (with the exception of Nmandi).

Actually raidertbone, I’d have to say the Raiders were the best team of the 70’s despite whatever Steelerfans say. We stopped Miami’s unbeaten streak after they won the SB undefeated. Then we were ripped off from the SB by the Squeelers & we were the only team to whip them out of a SB between their winning 4 (I’m discounting the Donkeys fluke SB). Besides the Raiders had the best winning % thru out the 70’s of ANY team. the Raiders were ripped off in the playoffs by KC going to SB IV (phantom PI call). SB X the Raiders were ripped off by the refs during the Rob Lytel fumble in ‘77 AFC champ game.
Bitter? You bet, as bitter as the coffee I’m sucking down right now.

Hey, let’s hire Bobby Petrino to coach the Raiders! Then, it wouldn’t be a complete shock to see him weasel out of town in the middle of the night, only to show up the next day to be the head coach at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo! He could become Al Davis’ next most perfect scapegoat!

The winner of the AFC championship game between the Raiders and Steelers in the 70’s went on to win the SB.

The ONLY reason Cable wasn’t fired this week is because Al is waiting for the arrest so that he can pull the “FOR CAUSE” card again and slime his way out of paying yet another coach.
And then he will actually be surprised when legit coaches refuse to sign a contract with the Raiders.

COWHER: Mr. Davis, what can I do for you?
AL: I’d like you to become the head coach of the greatest franchise in sports history!
COWHER: I think Phil Jackson already has that job.
AL: What? No no no the Oakland Raiders! I want you to bring us back to greatness!
COWHER: I don’t know Al, things seem pretty far gone out there right now.
AL: We really are not that far off, we just need another safety and another cornerback and will will begin dominating again.
COWHER: Well, what is your offer?
AL: I’ll give you $2 million a year for three years, all payable at the end of the contract! How does that sound young man?
COWHER: Hmmm, well, I think I would need a five year $55 million dollar contract, all guaranteed and paid up front…complete control of the coaching staff, scouting department and be able to pick my own player-personnel guy.
AL: What? What the hell are you talking about Cowher? Like I’d want you to be our coach anyhow! I’ve got Tom Flores waiting on line 2 and he would jump at the opportunity!

It all sounds legitimate; the only things that are missing is Al’s 30 minute rant about the greatness and the excellence of Raiders past — names like Madden, Biletnikoff, Marcus Allen, Willie Brown, and Howie … then he would try to schmooze Cowher into thinking that HE could also become part of Raider lore.
THEN, when Cowher politely turned him down, Al would get angry and just call him a “two-bit player from an old hick program in rural North Carolina”.

Well its wednesday, time to start with the predictions (wild dreams).
Raiders will go to a ton of play action this week rolling JR out and making him run a lot. (not because they think it will work, but to make him lose some weight) He will put up decent numbers (18/26 205 yds, 1 td) with a lot of check downs to bush and miller. Bush will have a decent game running (80 yds, 2 TD) and actually break some decent runs thanks to the implementation of the play action. Cable will finally discover that screen plays are good when you have top tier running backs.
Raiders will win a close one 27 – 21
And then I woke up…

The psychiatrist Karl Jaspers defined the three main criteria for diagnosing chronic delusion:
1) Certainty (a belief held with absolute conviction)
2) Incorrigibility (refusing to change even by compelling counterargument or proof to the contrary)
3) Impossibility or falsity of content (uttering the implausible, bizarre or patently untrue)
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines a delusion as:
“A false belief based on incorrect inference about external reality that is firmly sustained despite what almost everybody else believes and despite what constitutes incontrovertible and obvious proof or evidence to the contrary. The belief is not one ordinarily accepted by other members of the person’s culture or subculture.”
Looks like all the proof Mark Davis needs to mount a Palace Coup.

AD is not dumb, hes just competitive and stubborn. All of the media ripping on JR makes AD want him to succeed even more so that he can prove he was right and they were wrong.
TBH the offense needs to get back on track before the defense starts trying again. So my bet would be when the O-line gets healthy in a week or 2 we will see a much more competitive team. When the offense puts it together, my bet is the defense will follow.
Why would half the players work their butts off just so the other half can fail miserably?
October 14th, 2009 at 8:49 am
Offensively we know we can’t walk never mind run.
I think it could be manageble if the offensive philosophy was different and we get Chaz, Gallery and D-Mac back.
It will be more power run and quick hits.
My biggest concern is the defensive unit.
There are proven players over there and they have mailed it in the last three weeks.
I can allow the growing pains of a young offense that is clearly not being used properly (Al or Cable or whoever to blame)
But this Defense has Pro-Bowlers and a proven DC.
Good D and a good running game…..missing both and please name one young QB who has been successful with neither?
No excuses just reality.

Pierce is just telling it like it is and the more I hear, the more disgusted I am as a Raiderfan. I’ve been a fan and started going to games in 1975. I stayed with them through the L.A. move, went absolutely ape sh*t with happiness when they came home and hung in through the rough seasons. It all culminated in the SuperBowl and then it has just slipped away from there.
Still, I have hung in during the 2003-2008 seasons as best as a fan can do. Now, it’s 2009. The Raiders are blacked out on Sunday and I couldn’t be happier. I can watch another game. A real football game. This is a franchise that should be removed from Davis’ power. The NFL is a better league when the Raiders play well. Right now, it’s a lesser league and we have Al Davis to thank for this.

Yesterday I was looking at some of Russells highlights when he was at LSU and something jumped out at me that I really haven’t paid attention to. The only difference I seen from him since his college days was that he was a lil slimmer at LSU. His throwing mechanics and alll are the damn same, throwing off of his back foot, not setting his feet and delivering the ball, all the things he did then he’s doing now, as far as the way he plays. How did we all fall in love with this guys rocekt are but over looked all the other things?! Im at fault too I guess. Boy I wish we would have had a better look at this guy. I guess the line of thinking was we can change his mechanics or whatever sht that don’t seem to be working at all. We have someone who is supposed to be one of the best in teach QBS but he seems to be powerless working with Russell. Im really regretting us drafting this guy, I think I would be happy with Matt Leinart over this guy!

Reality is a new coach and new personel coordinator need to be in place.
The systems we employ have to have the ownership of the football staff.
The players will not perform if there is no accountabilty with the coaches.
Coaches can blame the systems and Al can blame the coaches.
Players get a free ride.
This is a basic management truism, impower your people and make them accountable.
Als ego has allowed him to create a loophole for the players.
Kids (players) are not what they used to be.
They don’t come from immigrant stock or fight their way out of poverty.
They have to see the coaches as men of ultimate authority and in total control of their destiny.
Otherwise you loose them…it’s the same in business these days….Al just has not learned it.

Anytime the last few days I check this site or PFT or whatever, I keep expecting something unexpected.

Maybe because it seems logical. Therefore, I have concluded we ’stay the course’ for the next several weeks until Cable goes apesh:t and starts benching people despite Davis, right before being arrested and/or fired.

I watched Jon Ritchie on BSPN this morning giving comments on the also-ran teams of NFL-dom. He surmised that benching JRuss was the solution as the team is dispirited on both sides of the ball knowing that all efforts are for naught as with the present QB they are never going to score. Personally I have no dislike of Russell but neither can I deny Ritchie’s commentary as being in error. When asked who should replace JaMarcus, Ritchie replied, “Grabowski (sic), Jeff George, or any fan from the Black Hole would provide some sort of spark.”

Crude Earl – Are you serious? This is the guy who fired his head coach mid-season last year, all because of his ego and to try to save a few bucks. He threw away any progress just because his coach was telling it like it is. Davis had to know he was throwing away the season. He’s not stupid, as you pointed out. This is the same guy that blocked his coach from firing Rob Ryan and hiring Monte Kiffin. And don’t lie, you and everyone else in here would have been sh1t-your-pants happy if Monte came here, considering what he accomplished in Tampa. But no, Davis’ beloved man defense was in danger. Ryan also was under contract and kissed Davis’ azz every chance he got, so he was safe.
Don’t fool yourself. Davis is a guy who treasures his ego above all. Next comes his pocket book. While he opens it up for players, he’s just the opposite in handling his coaches. And good coaching, my friend, is what gets it done in today’s NFL.

Just a thought…..but do you people (who profess to be such great Raider fans) want to try something different to change the way things are going?
Look, this is Al Davis’ team….why not appeal to Al Davis personally to change the direction he’s taking.
Mr Davis is old school, so why not try and reach out to him in an old school way? Invest a little time , and 44 cents for a postage stamp and write Al Davis a hand written letter…Protests, and bags on your heads at the games will only solidify his resistance to change…a respectful and gracious letter voicing your concerns and disappointment will go a lot farther. Tell him how much it means to you to be a Raider fan…Respectfully voice your concerns about his age and how spending his time finding the right people to turn the team over to when he passes on is more important than trying to throw together a winning team and making hasty decisions. Mention that his legacy is already built in the great history of the Raiders and that choosing the right successor, will only strengthen that legacy. Don’t be critical or negative. Being civil and respectful is the key to making an impact on Al Davis or any one his age for that matter.
You just might be surprised what kindness and respect

FIXING THE RAIDERS
This team is so bad that it’s hard to know where to start in order to get competitive again.
I’m an Al Davis loyalist, but freely admit he is directly responsible for the tragic state of the Raiders.
Having said that, the simple fact of the matter is that Al is not relinquishing control of this team anytime soon. Therefore, it’s a waste of time to think rebuilding this team is going to start with Davis departing.
So where do the Raiders begin ?
When watching this team, the thing that really stands out is the utter ineptitude of the offense. This team can not even make a first down, let alone put together a sustained drive or score touchdowns. The defense definitely isn’t good either, but it’s the total lack of offense that really kills this team.
Why does the offense suck so bad ?
There are many reasons. Most obvious is Russell’s poor play. Strong arms don’t mean much at the NFL level when you don’t have accuracy, pocket presence, leadership ability, work ethic, or brains.
An argument can be made that giving up on Russell or temporarily benching him at the very least, is where the Raids must start to rebuild the offense.
However, one must ask – is Frye or Gradkowski the long term answer – and how would they fare behind a very poor offensive line throwing to an inexperienced WR corps ? I think the answer to those questions are no, and not very well.
As depressing as it sounds, the better option might be to leave Russell in and hope that he can show anything at all to lead us to think he might not be one of the all time busts.
The only way we’re ever going to know with absolute certainty is if he’s given some more time and a functional offensive line to work behind.
Besides Henderson and the injured Gallery, we don’t have a single offensive lineman that’s worth a damn. They’re too weak and undersized to effectively run block and can’t protect to save their lives. This unit is a penalty prone sieve and the root cause of the Raider offensive woes.
Therefore, in my opinion, fixing the offensive line must be priority number one in fixing the Raiders. Once a decent offensive line is in place, our inexperienced WR’s will be more seasoned, we might actually be able to run the ball effectively, and we’ll know for sure whether Russell is indeed the worthless POS he appears to be.
Once the job of putting together a decent offensive line is completed, that’s when the hard decision on Russell can be accurately made. That goes for evaluating Cable’s ability to effectively scheme and play call on offense and be a head coach as well.
Man, it would be nice if a quick fix was available. Sadly, I don’t think one exists. It would be nice to turn this thing around in a year. But I’m thinking a year to fix the O-line and then starting over again to develop a franchise QB is the way to go.
Just my opinion. I admit watching this team play, it’s hard to argue against benching Russell now or even firing Cable.

DirtyBathWater,
I looked at his LSU highlights and the biggest difference is DWAYNE BOWE. Bowe went up and fought for the ball. JR needed someone like that for it to work for him. That’s why you hear him mention Chaz. Sometimes a good WR can make a QB look way too good. Austin Miles made Romo looked like he was world class in KC last week.

Why do we get coaches like Kiffin, Cable, Art, Norv, Bugel, Callahan, M. White??? Gee cuz nobody else wants the job. Raiders head coaches (Gruden is the exception) have always not been allowed to coach the way they want. Al has always not paid coaches very well because they are just puppets. Gruden was winning and Al didn’t like him getting the credit. So he would much prefer to lose because it’s his way & his guys. Al is a combination of Hitler/GW Bush/Saddam and Kim Jung Ill. your comments are thoughtful on the multitude of subjects you just entertained. and yes, sadly there seems to be no immediate solving of the many problems. there does need to be an attitude adjustment for the players – that alone would be welcome – however it may come about.
my own spilt milk tears are from a constant urging to draft O-lineman in both ‘08 and ‘09 that did not bear out. oh well…
all in all, lousy as they may be, it is still better to be a Raider fan than it is to follow any of the cretinous squads that only keep the seat warm until the Raiders once again rise to prominence.

Actually Wishbone,
It’s because Al choose the wrong guy. Belechick and Gruden were finalist for the Raider job. Fassell openly wrote a letter last year and didn’t even get an interview. Heck Gilbride was a finalist last year. Al keeps choosing the wrong guy. And/or he refuses to do the last thing it takes (cash, preferred asst, etc) to real in Sean Payton and Rex Ryan. LMFAO at Al blowing that one. Dude had the pen in his hand, and Rex on the way, but Al let it slip away.

RAIDERMAN99,you had me untill…
However, one must ask – is Frye or Gradkowski the long term answer – and how would they fare behind a very poor offensive line throwing to an inexperienced WR corps ? I think the answer to those questions are no, and not very well.
************************************************************
Gradkowski led DIV 1a at Toledo on completion %,I think Many posters here that went to the games are saying that Jmac isnt seeing the WR or RB’s that are open.Gradkowski is a tough kid who as a rookie with the bucs started 11 games 4 them.I dont recall his record but it is way better than Jmacs.Leading the Nation in % means you know where all your WR are.My thinking is Gradkowski would know where and how 2 check down recievers. This ONE attribute ALONE would get us many 1st downs and points. Our defence would be better 4it,imo

Shame on the coaching staff for not getting these players ready for the game, and shame on the players for showing no desire to fight and care about their job on any given Sunday.
I know Al Davis must be blame for everything, but why would anyone blame AL for this poor performance all around. Is he the one on the field or coaching the players, I don’t think so.
Their schemes might be very simple but regardless players should execute them to the perfection, that’s why they are getting paid for to do.
Raider nation should BOO the entire team on Sunday. I am so embarassed to be the fan of Raiders.

JHill Sean Payton turned down the job. Who said Rex Ryan or Gilbride was willing to take the job?? Al? John Herrera? Only guys willing to be the head coach are retread losers, college no names or guys who would never in their life have a chance to become an NFL coach. If any of you think Al would ever bring in a bigtime coach you are sadly mistaken. Crude Al lives to win??? Are you kidding me? The worst NFL team 6+ years. Al lives to hear people say “Yes sir Mr. Davis”. Al wants to win, but ONLY with his guys and his way. He had winning teams with Gruden, but got rid of him. Crude is an idiot.

anyone know if chaz and/or gallery are gonna play this week???????

Al Davis will never hire and keep a quality head coach. He will not pay the salary top level coaches command (including assistant coaches). He will not allow a head coach to coach according to HIS OWN beliefs and system, select players that fit HIS system, bring aboard assistants who reflect HIS style and system, or be allowed to hold assistant coaches and players accountable. Hence, no Gilbride, no keeping a Shanahan or a Gruden; no Fassell (even though he expressed initial interest – his requirements could not be met by Al). No hiring a Monte Kiffin, or a Rex Ryan, or any other high quality head coach. It would require those things Al Davis will simply not do – Pay top-scale coach’s salary, entrust that coach with responsibility for operating a system and selecting assistants and FOOTBALL players who also have speed – not just track stars – that fit the system, and empower (and hold accountable) the coaches to motivate, reward and punish players based on performance.
Hate to say it because I appreciate very much the joy Al Davis brought in my youth. But he is making my
“senior” years miserable (insofar as ability to enjoy a competitive football team is concerned).

4evaRaider,
You know more about Gradkowski and are higher on him than I am.
I wasn’t aware of his completion percentage at Toledo.
I saw Gradkowski play a little for the Bucs and wasn’t too impressed. I thought he played decently for the Raids during pre-season, but to be honest his arm strength seems to be a concern. He does appear to be mobile, hard nosed, willing to scramble when necessary, and possessed a good command of the offense. He just doesn’t appear to have the pure throwing ability that top notch NFL QB’s possess.
He reminds me alot of Frye. Don’t see much of a difference between those two guys. In all honesty, if the Raids do bench JR, I’d give the slight nod to Frye.
One other thing to keep in mind about college completion percentages…if I’m not mistaken Russell completed over 60% of his passes his final year at LSU. So I’m not sure that’s a very reliable indicator of being able to see the entire field or how that translates at the NFL level.
One thing you’re definitely right about though…some continuity and first downs on offense would greatly help the defense.
There’s no way a defense can sustain itself when it knows every single time they turn it over to the offense, it’s gonna be 3 and out and right back on the field again.
It’s gotta wear you out and dishearten the players.
Against the Giants it seemed the only way the D got off the field was by giving up a TD. There’s no doubt much work has to be done on that side of the ball too, but they’re not nearly as pathetic as the offense.

“…they need somebody to pick them up.”
Really!!! Didn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure that one out!
October 14th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
It starts with Russell. he is a horrible QB and the team knows it.
But Davis has protected this Guy to a level 5 degree! The other players see this and say what the F!@#! I won’t give my all!
So it is Russell’s fault along with davis! No one else is to blame!
Cable is just a coward, thats His parents fault for putting Him in dresses as a child! They are to blame.

Shark I completely agree,
Playing time is not based on performance, hell not even based on pride, just concern over egos.
The players know this!
The apathy has trickled down, cable & davis have allowed it, and rather than bench the problem they are attempting to go on a fire sale of their veterans!
You see Mr. Nnamdi Asomugha playing hard and a few others Mr. Ellis, Mr. Seymour,Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Huff, and Mr. Murphy & Mr. Bush as well as the kickers and a few others; as for Nnamdi QBs still avoiding him only targeted 5 times in first 4 games, we here from him, as he is clearly the Raiders’ spokesman, by the way is he team captain? Who are the captains?
