Screw your ‘Live Chat” and this FKD up bootsy blog!

JaMarshmallow is a hot piece of smelly garbage! I cant wait till week 8 to call him a BUST!

  2. Raider75 Says:

You guys defending Russell are the worst.

THE GUY SUCKS. He will never be an NFL QB. He doesn’t make reads fast enough, can’t feel the rush, can’t lead the team, and has a stupid haircut.

The haircut alone would be enough to get him cut from my team.

    Jerry, FIX THIS BLOG!

  3. raideredoutL.A. Says:

not exactly defending jr, but know there isn’t much behind him. might as well throw frye in there next.

So you cant checkdown from the correct formation or the wrong one? Good job Jhill, you have joined priest & his left tit Oakglenn.

Jerry can we see about giving these tits sweaters ?

“In one breath Cable says the QB has the wrong formation. Then he goes to the QB should have checked down, lol!”

  5. jhill Says:

“Maybe I shouldn’t put the offense in that situation on the 10-yard line to start the game, you know, trying to throw four verticals,” Cable said. “But I want to be more aggressive, I think that’s an important part of it.”

    ——————————————————

    4 verticals ????

Like Russell said, their was no time for a checkdown.

    Idiot ass Cable!

In one breath Cable says the QB has the wrong formation. Then he goes to the QB should have checked down, lol!

Hey Cable! Your boy Barnes got pancaked by Pace and was on #2 in a second.

“The first play of the game is going to haunt me,” Barnes said. “I’m just going to have nightmares over that one. That’s unacceptable.”

Maybe you shouldn’t put the offense in that postion to start the game?????

    YA THINK !!!!!

Let be real here. Gradkowski aint gonna lead this franchise anywhere. Anybody promoting him to start is just fooling themselves. Really fooling themselves.

10-19 for 97yds …he can’t do any worse than Russell? Sht that “IS” Russell …darn near 50% completion and piss poor production for darn near a whole 4Qs. And how long has Gradkowski been in the league?

    Puuuhlezze!

Face it. The Raiders have to see this through and hope it all turns around. But the longer this goes on that hope becomes lost. If nothing shows itself then look for a replacement in the offseason.

Bring in Gradkowski in the 2Q, Cable basically told the team he gave up. And the defense got progressively worse. It was a bad move by Cable. Period! He made the move and ended up getting shut out at home – 0pt! Even if they would have loss anyway, would you rather lose 38-14 or 38-0? At least the former has some semblance of respect. But you make the move EARLY in the game and your offense gets shut out at home. Brilliant!

The playcalling – terrible – too many deep patterns – not enough quick stuff to mix it up. Not enough sticking with the run. Cable is aggressive which is great, but damn he has to realize his team isn’t there yet.

  9. raideredoutL.A. Says:

i hate the chargers. damn the foreskins suck!

  10. raideredoutL.A. Says:

i think was, stl, tb, cle, kc are just as bad. we’ll find out who’s the worst, we play was, cle, kc, still.

  11. Mistabrown Says:

    Terrapin,
Nobody is going to lead this franchise anywhere! The point ISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Russell needs to have the sh!t kicked out of him until he “gets it” or he needs to go back to Alabammy and spend the remainder of his $ on bling & bbq. The kid needs a wakeup call!

  12. Terrapin Says:

Henderson and Gallery are the only offensive linemen worth a damn.

You mofos complaining about Russell fumblitis have a very valid point; but man you have got to pay attention to that offensive line too and how they are contributing to a lot of it.

Russell fumble near the goal line …check down where …that ball was coming out no matter what …he had no chance. If you look at it closely HE WAS CHECKING DOWN!!!! NO chance to even do that.

And that 1st INT …blitzer coming free ..who else but Barnes not picking it up.

JR sucked but so did the rest of the team.

AL really FK’d up not bringing in a vet WR like Toomer to show these youngsters how to practice, watch film, and play. They are lost out there and what is supposed to be their leader is a pitiful excuse of a ungrateful millionaire “bonafide” reject of a Qb.

    The end.

So you cant checkdown from the correct formation or the wrong one?

    —————————————————–

More evidence of your utter lack of football knowledge. Why don’t you just get back to practicing your comedy routine and enjoying the demise of this team.

WTF is that question YOU ask even asking?

So you can’t checkdown from the right formation? Sure you can

or the wrong one? I guess.

Not quite sure what any of that has to do with the point. Let me help you, lol!

Do you understand what Cable meant by calling 4 vertical routes?

Can you tell me which one of those 4 vertical routes was the “quick before Barnes gets pancaked” checkdown?

How long does it take for a vertical checkdown route to develop, lol!

  16. Terrapin Says:

Check down where. The guy was on him so fast he couldnt even check down when he wanted to.

He was checkin’ down. Damn thats bad. If you can’t even check down before a defender is on your asz.

Henderson and Gallery are the only linemen worth a damn. That right side and middle is like a jail break.

(Satele, Carlisle, Green are backups elsewhere ….Carl obviously lost a step)

  17. Random Drug Tester Says:

Hello Raider Fans, we are at a cross-roads…..

This is a Fletcher Christian kind of cross-roads.
Not an easy decision, but almost as plain as your hand in front of your face.

Mutiny, plain and simple as that, confront the fact that Al Davis is incapable to Captain the ship anymore and you have to quit acting like good little soldiers anymore in order to be true and honest Raider fans.

YOU have to be part of the movement that actively removes him from the seat of power. Quit buying his tickets, quit making him successful, quit defending his obviously deluded orders.

It’s over…HE is the “root cause” of the problem.

It hurts…but it’s the truth, no pain – no gain, it’s rock-bottom and not getting better, face it.

I’m no MR, but I am a Raider fan deserving more than I am getting from the status quo.

TIME TO CHANGE THE STATUS QUO!!!

Fight back and change it like Lyle Alzado, Romanoski, Hendricks, Tatum, Hayes, Haynes, Stabler, Matuszak, and every other good Raider would do…say this is wrong and not stand for it!!!

  18. jhill Says:

Can someone please tell me who #2, or #5 for that matter is suppossed to check the ball down to when the receivers are all running vertical patterns because the coach wants to be aggressive?

Is #2 or #5 supposed to anticipate the RT getting PANCAKED and the DE jumping right over him in less than 2 seconds? When ALL the receivers are running vertical routes?

At what point do you start going through progressions with ALL 4 receivers running vertical routes? 3 seconds? At least 3, right?

    Cable is an idiot!

  19. Terrapin Says:

Cable is trying to for from A to C without taking any intermediate steps. I think that much is clear.

He has to look at himself and realize you can’t have it all NOW. Slow this sht down before you lose everything. Run the damn ball. Shorten the routes. Get your offense in a rhythm.

  20. jhill Says:

Cable is so lost, it’s pathetic.

Cable benched #2 because he saw another coach do it on ESPN, lol.

The same way he copied the timeout right before the FG move.

Cable is CLEARLY grasping for straws as he circles the drain.

He knows he shouldn’t call that play with the QB and WRs we have, but a big fat F it, he wants to be aggressive?????

Is that acceptable to you guys?

    CMON!

  21. Terrapin Says:

check out the nfl.com game highlights ….you’ll see clearly that he had no shot at even checking down (which he tried to do) on that fumbled play …what a dayum shame …guy was on him in less than 3secs …and of course very few ppl pay attn to that

  22. Mistabrown Says:

    You answered my question, thanks!

“So you can’t checkdown from the right formation? Sure you can

or the wrong one? I guess”

  23. priesttj Says:

Cable is a retard, anybody with half a brain can see he’s handycapping this team with his as he says aggressive playcalling. This line these WR’s and this QB are not ready for this. Yet week in week out he keeps putting them in this suituation and then blaming the QB if he can’t chicken salad outta chicken excrement. These guy’s are learning and it aint pretty but to make the QB the fallguy is weak. The entire thing wreaks………………..period

  24. priesttj Says:

BS, what we lack is a playcaller who knows what his team can and cannot do. And what’s worse who should do it.

Loook at the poor Redskins, they’re struggling badly becaue they don’t have playmakers. And neither do we.

  25. Random Drug Tester Says:

this won’t be fixed by better check downs!!!

we lack FOOTBALL TALENT and FOOTBALL PLAYERS!!!

  28. Random Drug Tester Says:

do you seriously think that a couple of different play-calls or different check-downs would have avoided a 38 to NOTHING beatdown?

Have you ever been on the field of play?

This organization is in serious need of a re-org!!

  29. Mistabrown Says:

Yeah Priest throw Cable under the bus in your effort to make excuses for JaDumbell. Poor Black Moses eh Priest, you had such HIGH hopes for him but he is a waste a complete utter disaster!

  30. Raider75 Says:

I agree with all the people who are down on Cable.

However, I don’t care if you resurrected Bill Walsh as the HC, RUSSELL SUCKS!

RUSSELL WILL SUCK NO MATTER WHO THE COACH IS!

38-14 is more respectable? What did you see that made you think Russell would get 14 points?

Was it the fumble, the 1st pick when no Raider was around, or the absolute garbage throw to the endzone to a covered WR that ended in a pick when it was 1st f’n down?!

  31. Mistabrown Says:

Jhill if your going to make the following statement you better be ready to defend it.

“In one breath Cable says the QB has the wrong formation. Then he goes to the QB should have checked down, lol!”

What does 1 have to do with the other? Thats why I asked you if we could check down from both wrong or right formations. All you wanna do is ask me further questions…..WTF is wrong with you?

  32. Random Drug Tester Says:

There is no playbook, there is no game-plan or game-planning.

This club is run by lunacy and chaos and it shows up on the field week in and week out.

I could do a better job and that’s not an empty statement…this is an easy standard to exceed.

    Pathetic…Pathetic….Pathetic…heads should roll!

  33. RaiderYYZ Says:

Look at Eli Manning the past two weeks. SB MVP and a so-called “elite” QB barely completes half his passes, and turns the ball over 5 times.

This because he doesn’t have much of a running game for 2 weeks (Bradshaw HAS been giving them big plays), and his O-Line is missing a guy for the first time in over 2 seasons.

This kind of running game and O-Line play is JaMarcus’ reality EVERY WEEK.

Barnes got run over in 2 seconds and JaMarcus was on his way to a check down (WAITING FOR RUSSELL TO GET IN FRONT OF THE O-LINE) and he gets sacked before this can even happen.

He didn’t even have time to dump it in front of the O-Line!!!

    C’Mon people…

  41. jhill Says:

    Cmon Mista,

If you want to talk, let’s talk, but I’m not for the BS. If you want to play your Jameatball games, you have plenty of takers.

Cable is a bad coach, IMO.

I’ve said a million times that the QB is not playing well. What’s YOUR problem?

What is the point of Cable saying that the QB had the team in the wrong formation? What does that have to do with the turnover? Is he simply throwing the QB under the bus? Well why would the dumb ass coach not call timeout himself if the play is headed down the tubes? We are only on the 10 yd line?

What is the point of him saying the QB should have checked it down? Other than him trying to justify the benching, of course. Are you REALLY trying to tell me that the QB had time to evaluate 4 vertical routes before Pace got to him? Impossible.

Check down?!?!! 7 step drop, with 4 vertical routes, with a blown block by the RT?

    LMFAO!

What Cable SHOULD have said IF ANYTHING was the QB should have done a better job of recognizing the blown assignment from the RT and tucked the ball away.

Or simply what he said today – Maybe I shouldn’t have put the offense in that position to start the game.

  42. priesttj Says:

What I said last year and what I see this year are two different things FOOL. The man is putting his team in bad situations every week. That’s what I see NOW!!

Priest how many times were you on local radio screaming like a loon for Kiffin to “LET THAT KID PLAY”?
    1235986877 times?

Priest let me ask another question..

How many times on this blog did you say Kiffin was holding this KID back take the training wheels off AND LET HIM PLAY?

YYZ, im not defending Cable or his play calling I’m pointing out to priest what a two-faced talking out both sides of his mouth & ass he is.

Is YYZ a reference to Rush?”

well I don’t know anything about priest. I’m just saying he probably thinks the same way as I do. I wanted more than Kiffin offered also, but less than we’re getting with cable.

Look at the Eagles game tonight. We blitzed the heck out of them and exposed something. What does Andy Reid do? First 3 passes the ball was out in less than 2 seconds…. THAT’S PLAY CALLING.

Tale a shot downfield AFTER establishing some underneath stuff. Take a shot downfield AFTER establishing some running. That’s what teams do. Every good run, ever good short pass the safeties creep up a little. That’s when DHB should get single coverage and be able to beat a guys downfield. I dunno… Play-action first play of the game MAY work if you have Adrian peterson or MJD, but not with teh way we’ve been running.

In terms of YYZ it’s a reference to an airport, which is what the Rush song is a reference to, which is a reference to where they are from, which is where I am from.

I see Geddy Lee driving around all the time.

  60. jhill Says:

    75,

I think you post a lot of good stuff.

My question to you is like Gallery under Shell, how can we judge ANY of our young players under the circumstances of this year?

Every indication since he became HC was that Cable was going to turn Russell loose. Be damned if he’s ready, we are ready for him to be ready!

Cable told you his play all summer. Garcia confirmed it, and said what everyone knew, that #2 was NOT ready for this. Everyone and their mother knows that Bush/McFadden/Fargas should be running the shyt out of the ball. Not Kiffin like 90/10 ratios, but probably 60/40 run like we were doing the last 6 games of last year.

Even Al said more Bush and McFadden and power running is what we should expect to see. Where is it?!?!?!?

Last week, Fargas says it was good to get back to what we do, running the ball and passing off of the run. That’s what we do, that’s who we are.

    Really?

“Maybe I shouldn’t put the offense in that situation on the 10-yard line to start the game, you know, trying to throw four verticals,” Cable said. “But I want to be more aggressive, I think that’s an important part of it.”

jhill said it best about the playcall. why would u call 4 vertical routes with no intermediate and checkdown patterns mixed in to protect your qb? it wasnt like we needed a hail mary to win the game. why wouldnt he run right off the bat knowing kris jenkins was out of the game? he said he wanted to catch the jets by surprise but for what? that was the prime time to establish the run early and control the clock being down just 1 score. the jets werent going to get away from who they are but cable has. this team has no identity cuz cable took it away.

  63. Random Drug Tester Says:

Asomugha is a sell-out shill as far am I’m concerned because he stays here and says nothing and takes 14 million. I’d rather compete for a Super Bowl and take 7 million because that’s what the real pay-off is for REAL football players. Never seen him win a game for us, might as well trade him for a couple of new players, real GM’s would too.

Playcalling is as much an art as any skill player learning his skill. It takes a lot pf experience and knowledge about your own team and the opponent. What to call and when to call based on the momentum and strengths of your opponent. If you don’t have a handle on that you can cause your own team to be exposed to unnecessary pressure. That is what I’m seeing in Cable he just doesn’t understand when and what to call. Because he believes every play he calls should work whenever he calls it.

jhill said it best about the playcall. why would u call 4 vertical routes with no intermediate and checkdown patterns mixed in to protect your qb? it wasnt like we needed a hail mary to win the game. why wouldnt he run right off the bat knowing kris jenkins was out of the game? he said he wanted to catch the jets by surprise but for what? that was the prime time to establish the run early and control the clock being down just 1 score. the jets werent going to get away from who they are but cable has. this team has no identity cuz cable took it away.

He’s proven to be a good O-Line coach and now that it isn’t a focus for him the O-Line sucks. 2007 was a good year for our O-Line…

Al Davis is not going anywhere and the Raiders have ALWAYS been a players team. It’s never been coached by hard-asses… Cable is a life-long Raider fan. He understands Davis, knows his role.

Somethings in life can’t be changed. AD still drafted Nnam. Still drafted Zach Miller. Still drafted Gallery who is a pro-Bowl calibre guard at least not a total bust. Tyvon branch looks good. Schilens in the 7th looks lik a steal if he comes back from injury. Morrison and Howard are solid. After missing on Gallery (from a #2 overall LT perspective), Stinchcomb, McQuistan, Grove) he got scared away from OL. That’s my biggest personell issue.

It’s not ALL BAD though. AD has his faults but he’s not going anywhere. Cable is the best guy for this team. We just need some balance on offense and time.

Anyone oyt there name a SINGLE QB in the history off football that put up good numbers with basically 3 rook wr’s, and a bad O-Line. I can’t think of a single one with that combination

YYZ-while we don’t know what is said behind closed doors, it’s a safe bet Cable isn’t telling the faltering qb, who’s dead last in the league, that his play is completely unacceptable, right?
Russell keeps stating he’s “happy with where I am” or “No, I don’t think I did anything wrong” adding “That interception I threw it up, and waited for my WR to make a play”. JR seems to be in total denial.
IF Cable is actually telling him he’s not doing well? Then JR truly has serious problems.

RE: Al’s spending being wrong? And doing things different?
What was wrong wasn’t that he spent money, it was that he spent ridiculous bucks on players who weren’t worth 1/4 of what they received. Correcting the problem isn’t ceasing to improve the team, it’s making better choices on free agents, and paying them what they’re worth.
(of course, as many believe, many players won’t come to the Raiders unless they receive above their market value)

As far as Chucky not calling out players? First off, not saying Cable or any coach need call out a player via the press, ever. What I’m talking about is when a player makes a mistake, the coach is there, in their face, either motivating or kicking ass. Chucky did that, in spades. From Gannon on down. Who can forget the exchanges between Chucky and players coming off the field who made a mistake, especially Gannon. Well documented F bombs exchanged on both sides, with both sides saying “no biggee..we both want the same thing for this team”. Cable never does that. For that matter, it’s hard to recall him actually walking up to any players except after a TD, or a great play. Mistakes? He doesn’t bat an eye. Turnovers? Sits there, ala Shell, staring blankly.

^^^^^^^Agree with you for once…..Gruden used to get in players faces and hold them accountable for mistakes and discipline them!

Cable doesn’t get anyones face (except an assistant coach) and doesn’t hold players accountable for lack of effort or mistakes. He does seem to have that blank stare like Art Shell….no good.

Whichever team moves to LA…..Roski wants part ownership and I doubt the stubborn old man will sell half to Roski. Unless the old man realizes that moving to LA maybe his only chance to get a new stadium before he dies and that LA stadium will host Super Bowls. Good morning Nation the only Nation.
Looking to next year this is what i feel needs to happen.

Reading an article that mentioned, lets start thinking about next year. Well i have although i have not given up this year, and will not until that final whistle blows.

I have thought this for a while, but now it makes more sense then anything else going on. We have lost our identity, witch is a power running team. I don’t blame Cable but that’s just not us this zone blocking scheme is for teams that do not have the running backs we have. Lets go back in time for a bit, who recalls Wheatley, and Garner running through our power blocking O-Line? Now tell me don’t they remind you of Michael Bush and Darren McFadden?.

I don’t think we have the running backs for the zone blocking scheme, we need some power blockers. So i say Gallery, and Super Mario stay the rest of the O-Line goes next season. Putting Gallery and Henderson kind of reminds me of Shell and Upshaw, a little premature i know but hell anything is better then this.

So i say lets allow Cable to coach but we need a power running game, i say enough with this zone blocking crap “sorry for my language lol”.

Man on man no confusion, you got you’re guy i got my guy now find the hole and burst through it. I have said many time McFadden is an instinctive runner with his field vision he finds his own holes, you cant make him be a cut back runner with a slow fullback in front of him. They just block the hole, but put a fullback in there with a power blocking O-Line and look out McFadden will be at the second level juking DB’S in no time. As for Michael Bush well that’s like having 2 fullbacks coming at you, only 1 has the speed to burn you in the open field.

Please bring back the power running game, zone blocking is for line men that cant block man to man. It’s also confusing for the players we have. Power Blocking will also help Jamarcus it will give him a better sense of who is blitzing and who has contain on the outside. “BRING BACK THE POWER BLOCKING”

  129. RaiderRockstar Says:

wow. looks like 2 things have transpired

#1 Tom Cable has finally given up on Russell
    and
#2 Al Davis played the trump card and Russell will start regardless

“JaMarcus Russell is a talented quarterback. get over it!” – Al Davis

Cable’s hands are tied. I told you guys that JaWalrus would cost Cable, Hackett & Tollner thier jobs…

  130. r8dr4lfe21 Says:

Cable is costing himself his own job, he drafted and signed these so called zone blocking line men. He didnt draft Jmac i agree but he did sign these unproductive line men. I remember people saying no worries Cable will find a gem in the later rounds of the draft. 1 gem Mario Henderson and i still believe thats a Davis pic.
Why bash on Davis cause he gave us Seymour and a good off season. Ok i know the past years he spent money on mediocre players. I dont see DeAngelo Hall talking much right now do you.
This year Al gave us hope but this zone blocking run game has been our downfall.

  131. FunkyBathWater Says:

What’s good RR?!?, Dirt lot and they rest of the morning crew, I have nothing to say about that loss, gotta get ready for S.D.

  132. hwnrdr Says:

Had doubts of that in the beginning, especially since he played well to end the season last year. However, now, I can pretty much agree with you on that one, Rockstar. Another blow out this week by SD heading into the bye…Cable may get the axe! I hope not, but knowing Al…

  133. RaiderRockstar Says:

after the Giants pounded us and Antonio Pierce said it felt like a scrimmage we played solid football against the Eagles and beat a much better team than us.

now that the Jets have pounded us 38-0 I hope somebody puts a message on the board. the one by Richard Seymour about “an Oakland high school team would beat us” should do. LOL. maybe we’ll steal a victory against another team that is better than us, but we know all too well.

keep Routt away from Vincent Jackson. no more getting screwed over by the refs (Murphy’s TD catch)

  134. CJ Legend 34 Says:

    *******Question for Jerry*************

Do you ever feel cursed to covering this terrible franchise?

Do you ever get tired of talking about what was in Raider history to create a positive story?

We gotta know Jerry, we gotta know!

  135. RaiderRockstar Says:

r8dr4lfe21: i agree. Cable is not a personnel man.

However, who signed Cornell Green/Cooper Carlisle/Kwame Harris/Erik Pears/Khalif Barnes & traded for Samson Satele?

if give you a hint. it wasn’t Cable …

who drafted Russell, McFadden & Heyward-Bey the past 3 years? that wasn’t Cable either.

I blame Cable for his play calling. he should have ran the ball down the Jets throats and made it a physical football game. Even still, with better players those plays called might have been executed.

this team is not prepared or motivated. Cable can’t seem to shake the losing culture. the players expect to lose each week.

  136. hwnrdr Says:

Week 8 at we still only have 2 wins. Like I stated earlier in the season…we have to go 2-1 to start, because that will dictate the rest of the season. Well, we started 1-2…where are we now? The team must show fight now throuhout the rest of the season or…we all know what’s up…

  137. CJ Legend 34 Says:

I hope so they are very deserving of that record from the top to the bottom. I would not blow my money on these clowns if I were a zillionaire!!!!!!!!!!

I was hoping for an 8-8 record this year. that is improvement in my book.

even 6 or 7 wins would be. yikes!

to reach 8-8 we’d have to win 6 of our next 9 games.

only winnable games I see left are KC, Washington & Cleveland. 5-11 finish for Cable and another HC search in the offseason (if not sooner)

  140. RaiderRockstar Says:

I’ve been saying for 7 years, STOP THE RUN! I don’t think it mattered that JR lost the ball 3 times, if you can’t stop the run NOTHING matters. If they spent all the draft picks for boring Off linemen & D lineman & left the flashy players behind the Raiders would be making names from nobody RBs WRs QBs & TEs!!!!
For 7 years now, if you don’t drft or trade to stop the run nothing & nobody else matters!!!
Am I smarter than Al Davis?!?!?!?!

  144. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

So who is taking the Clippers tonight?

  145. CJ Legend 34 Says:

    Raider TW

You must stop the run and you also have to protect the ball. They are both most important to win a game.

I question our scout team (if we have one) of making the right picks any how.

  148. TiredFan Says:

All these long posts on how to fix this team. Simple 3 Things in order of importance. You can talk about scheme and coaches and Al Davis and blah blah blah. Its simple and its the only consistent that this franchise has been missing over the past 20 miserable years.

    1 Player Accountability
-Cable keeps preaching it but he seems to be one of the only one that has it.

    2 Discipline
-As long as a player loves a franchise more so because he can do whatever he wants rather than loving it for winning there will be no light at the end of the tunnel.

    3 Better role players
-Ever notice how so many players that have started for the raiders can’t even make other teams roster.

For those of you who know of it its the theory of the power of context. Until the core is taken care of the rest will never fall into place.

  149. hwnrdr Says:

    Good Post TiredFan…

So who is taking the Clippers tonight?

whats up with Michigan? saw they got some bad press on SportsCenter this mornin’

  151. FunkyBathWater Says:

Yeah the Defense played great last week came in all hyped up about it but forgot about staying in their gaps, our defense will never be good on a consistant basis. One week they are disciplined and plays well the next week these guys take bad angles miss tackles and don’t stay in the gaps. The team as a WHOLE IS GARBAGE!!!! Just can’t blame Russell alone everyone shares the blame!

  152. jhill Says:

    Damn good post Tired Fan!

  153. RaiderRockstar Says:

    3 Better role players
-Ever notice how so many players that have started for the raiders can’t even make other teams roster.

    ***

    TF: how about better starters?

Fargas, Satele, Morris, Carlisle & Green should all be backups. Russell isn’t playing like a starter and the rookie WR’s should be able to sit & learn. Walker & Higgins should be starting

on defense, Warren & Eugene are not starter quality and Routt is an awful nickel corner.

I’m not going to sit and blame guys like Frye, Bush, McQuistan, Myers, Lawton, Stewart and L. Walker for our lack of offense.

Not gonna blame guys like Shaughnessy, Bryant, Scott, Williams and Mitchell for our lack of defense either.

nor our ST unit. Higgins hasn’t been the same since his injury and Justin Miller (when healthy) was a much better kick returner than Rankin or Holland. Nick Miller is still hurt. Jano & Lechler are awesome so far this year.

  154. M Lonetree Says:

    TiredFan,

    interesting and poignant.

Player Accountability : Hmmm, having a rookie salary cap would make some overpaid players hungrier to admit they need to work hard to stay in the league, otherwise they’d have to find a real job (tough to do when the college resume skirts any education).

Discipline : Many modern athletes have been told from early years that they are the greatest and have been coddled with all praise as they have been allowed to do whatsoever they damn well please without discipline. Discipline comes down to individual awareness and can only accepted by some.

Better Role Players : that’s a problem for many teams, not just Oaktown.

good morning and pass the coffee this way if you please.

  155. M Lonetree Says:

    LMN,

I blame the time-stamp problem on you as your Danish time-zone has upset all of the hamsters running on their wheels which power this blog.

  156. wishbone Says:

Tired–There is a slight problem or two with your ideas. First off Al never makes his players accountable unless he wasn’t in favor of bringing them in. (Gannon was brought in by Gruden and Al never wanted him). Discipline has never really been around since the early 80’s. Al prefers to let his guys run wild and just make plays. The “role players” I do agree with you. There are a bunch of guys on this team that would never make an NFL team or possibly even UFL team. (Lawton, Kelly, Pears, JRussell, Eugene, Huff, Brown). The problem stems from the very top. He is the one who has created this mess. Now he has a fat, dumb, lazy & overpaid QB he is forced to play or admit he made a mistake. Al rarely ever admits any wrong doing.

  157. LA to TheBay Says:

The team is starting to fold.

The key is to hit the ground running.

The offense isn’t capable of stringing together plays because of:

-Poor STU play, drive starts at 19 too much
    -Poor coaching
    -Puzzling play calling
    -Poor offensive line play
    -Poor QB play
    -Poor WR play
-Zach Miller is being taken away by teams smart enough to do so.

When the offense goes stagnant early, the D strings together several good series.

When they see the offense will never prodeuce, they become morally defeated and they’ve already lost the game.

Then come the missed tackles and the poor gap discipline.

    It starts with the offense.

As long as the offense doesn’t turn the ball over and moves the chains, FGs and the occasional lucky TD will allow the Raiders D to keep them hanging around.

  158. hwnrdr Says:

I think that the Kool-Aid man smashed into a toilette! And not referencing anyone here…OAK…where you at, brother?

  159. FunkyBathWater Says:

Yup I can go along with that, and lets not forget we are playing someone big money just to put on a jersey(guess who im talking about) lol if the OWNER HIMSELF talked this guy out of retiring why isn’t he playing now, being that certain WRs drops more balls than Kobe drops 30

  160. LA to TheBay Says:

  162. AbusedByAl Says:

What a mess! I guess Al Davis just likes losing. He is cursed since the days he fired Gruden, and deservedly so. Everything he now touches turns to dust… This team and organization needs a new culture from the top down. We won’t see a better team until the day Al resigns. Until then, we can talk and get furious as much as we want, we will suck. This will never be a good team again as long as Al is around.

As to QB, Russell hasn’t got “it”. Look at Sanchez, a ROOKIE. Yes he played bad the week before, but in the games before the bad one, one could easily see his talent and that he is already better than Russell who is in his 3rd year. Except for a strong arm, Russell has got nothing that makes a good QB in this game. And that is NOT the most important quality required! Kiffin was right, he’s a lazy, fat, disinterested dud. We will never see a good game from him. Or two in a row, or three in a row or like a full season like we see if from the good ones. Maybe he is not the only roster problem but certainly one of them and an expensive one at that. The face of the franchise?? Damn, I don’t want to be associated with that bozo. He will never be my face of the Raiders franchise.

These were the last 10min for me to occupy myself in earnest with the Raiders. Now I’m checking out. Call me when Al is gone. Until then good luck to all of us! We’ll need it….

    LMAO @ 170 & 171!

  171. LA to TheBay Says:

You’d figure getting clowned every day in the media, by your coaches and by the fans would wake Russell up.

    His offensive line is terrible.
His WRs are rookies who drop more than they catch
His head coach is calling plays like he’s Peyton Manning.

OK, so now that the excuses are out of the way.

Russell held out. Fine. Get your money, you came to a 2-14 team and you and your agent knew what you were in for. I think we’re a long ways from times when guys were lucky to play, played their @$$es off and sold insurance or used cars in the offseason. But, whatever, fine. This is a new age.

So you held out. Missed camp, had Culpepper to look up to (a guy auditioning for a job elsewhere and so dejected he “retired” at the end of the season) and get a garbage start at the end of the season.

Kiffin, who has been critical of you, declares you starter. You have the offseason to prepare and learn the playbook, which you don’t.

You have a pedestrian 1st half of the season and rather effective as a game manager on a bad team.

You have success near the end, going 3-3 and putting up decent numbers. You and your young WRs are clicking and you’re getting protection.

You know you’re unquestioned starter and you have the whole offseason to get into the best shape of your life, digesting only good carbs and the playbook.

You come in out of shape and put up some of the worst numbers in the history of the game. Fine. It’s a young offense, yada, yada (see above for excuses).

OK, so now that the team has suffered its worst home loss ever, the whole franchise and fan base is reeling, and you have the audacity to shrug it off and blame everyone else?

Even if it wasn’t all on you, or any of it, you are the QB. For better or worse, you are the leader and the face of the franchise.

I stand by my assessments of your talent, but when you sh;t on everyone like that, shrug it off and Cable has to tell us “you understand” why you were benched, you clearly don’t.

  172. Dakota Says:

Russell is salvageable…but it will take a franchise culture transplant to do it.

Strong head coach empowered by the owner to deal with Russell…tough love and motivation…no more making excuses for the turd.

The owner cutting himself off from interacting with the players so much. Russell knows the owner would can Cable before giving up on him…that hierarchy needs to change.

The owner will have to threaten to cut his darling QB in 2010 to force a renegotiation (even Russell’s agent know no other team would give him more than the vet minimum if the Raiders cut him). The renegotiated contract will have to be incentive filled in order to motivate the lazy bastard.

    God help us.

Russell has not played well but as you see across the bay, the QB can manage what he can manage.

The organization created the scenario were JR cannot be sat down while a veteren runs it for a while.

JR gets taken in the second round he is a project that everyone is screaming for to play.

Bad management and bad coaching……QB is just a player nothing special but not the thing thats killing this team either.

I still think that our QB is not helping, but he is not anymore of a problem than 7 other starting QBs in this league week to week.

Coaching is about game planning for your personnel and being successful until someone stops you.

This coach stops our success for us.

  192. RaiderYYZ Says:

I think JaMarcus is at the point where from his perspective it’s “him against the world”.

I don’t really care about his comments to the media. Even if he said he played poorly what would that change?

If anything I am happy that despite being labelled as the “biggest bust in NFL history”, or the “worst starting QB in the history of the nfl” by national media outlets he still keeps positive, still keeps his confidence. Is it un-warranted, maybe, but i’d rather have that then him cave at this point…

Bottom 5 offensive lines in the league, 3 rook wr’s he’s throwing to right now, play-calling that requires time in the pocket to be effective.

    Big picture people, big picture.

  193. Silver-n-Smac Says:

Most of you (probably all of you) will disagree with the following assessment of JaMarcus. But, I’ve always had a good read on people’s psyche’s during my life (yeah, laugh away) and this is what I see in this kid:

    1. Deep down, he’s a good kid, with a big heart. I don’t mean “big heart” in football terms. I just mean he cares about the people close to him. He’s not a bad guy. He’s not the un-caring loser everyone makes him out to be.

    2. He’s very immature. Not immature as in he doesn’t give a crap what anyone says, but, rather – that he is completely overwhelmed by having so much money and having 30 microphones in his face. This doesn’t justify his immature behavior, but, that’s the fact. Deep down, this kid is shy and he was raised as such. It’s as clear as day.

    3. With that being said, and despite his 275 pound frame, I think he’s INSECURE AS HELL. That may sound crazy but it’s the truth. When a kid plays as horribly as he did last Sunday and relinquishes all blame and asks “do you think it’s me?”, he’s showing that he’s simply not ready to handle the limelight. Like it or not, it’s a defense mechanism. He knows he’s the reason we lost. But, standing there and admitting it on live TV is embarrassing to him. He doesn’t want to admit that with his buddies ( his “possy”) watching. Is it the right thing to do? Hell no, but, that’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s putting up a shield.

    4. Haven’t you all seen someone who’s got too much pride or is too insecure to admit their faults? I see it all the time. That doesn’t make he/she a bad human being. It doesn’t make him/her a loser. And it doesn’t mean that he/she doesn’t care. Those are damning statements to make about someone without knowing them.

Jamarcus does care, but until he grows up some and realizes that you’re more of a man when you admit that you’re wrong, he’ll continue to put up that self-defense shield.

I may be the only human being on earth (besides Al) who thinks he’s going to be a good quarterback. He sucks right now. And he sucks for a multitude of reasons. There is no denying that. The Raiders haven’t made it easy for him – that’s for sure.

And he will NOT become a good QB until he matures as a human being.

I personally think that he WILL do that. Unfortunately, as a Raider fan, I have to watch my team go through this in the meantime.

Sucks, but, I sure as hell ain’t gonna root for another team.

Big picture? You want big picture?
How about a qb who doesn’t get it?

Is that big enough for ya?

A qb who, instead of stating he has LOTS OF WORK TO DO, is stating “hey, I’m happy with how I’m doing”?

A qb, who throws two interceptions, and fumbles away a ball, instead of taking blame, actually blames everyone/anything but HIMSELF?

It’s not an issue of caving. It’s an issue of accepting what you need to do to succeed.

“Even if he said he played poorly, what would that change’? CHANGES A LOT..means he knows that what he’s doing is NOT acceptable. Means he knows that what everyone has been saying, that he needs to “do those extra things to insure his success” is dead on, instead of actually believing it’s everyone else, but not him.

You know..maybe..when he comes off the field? To actually do what EVERY QB DOES..which is seek out the coaches to go over still shots of defensive alignments..talk with the coach about what just happened.
What does JR do? Goes and sits..plops down..as if he can’t be bothered. The assts then have to COME TO HIM to show him alignments.

The moron just got benched..and he DOESN’T KNOW WHY. That’s not confidence, that’s total ignorance and dis-interest. How is it possible to know that last year, AND THIS YEAR, you’re the absolute worst starting qb in the league, and state ‘I’m happy with what I’m doing”??

He should be embarrassed. He should be doing extra. Should be RUNNING LAPS AFTER EVERY PRACTICE to get his fatass in shape..but he doesn’t. He thinks ‘everything is just peachy’

5 years after JR is out of football he’ll still be saying ‘I was fine. I threw it up. Receivers should have gone up for it. Not my fault.”

    JaMarcus will remain the man

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 26, 2009 11:29 AM ET

Raiders coach Tom Cable didn’t even have to be asked the question.

JaMarcus Russell remains Oakland’s starting quarterback, despite getting the hook in Sunday’s 38-0 loss to the Jets. After the game, various players took responsibility for their roles in the worst loss in Raiders history. Except Russell.

“I don’t think it’s me personally, I really don’t,” Russell said after the game. “It’s a bad combination of one guy doesn’t do something right one time. Personally, I don’t think so . . . Do you?”

(Yes, and we also just heard the sound of a thousand Raiders fans screaming.)

Russell also asked said he was happy with all his reads and decisions. JaMarcus turned the ball over three times despite throwing only 11 times, one of them being an inexplicable toss to Jets defender Jim Leonhard with no Raider players nearby.

Russell was booed heavily Sunday, but Raiders fans are speaking loudest with their indifference. The paid attendance for Sunday’s loss was the lowest in Oakland since 1968.

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

    so my questions are:

how do you train a guy who doesn’t think he needs training???

is there any hope for an employee who thinks he has nothing to learn and that you have no authority over him???

what do you say to an employee who screws up royally and refuses to admit he screwed up???

But, as I said in post #193 above, JaMarcus is simply not there yet in his maturation as an adult.

He will be, but, he’s still very much an immature kid.

Like you, I have much hope for him and believe that he will improve as others around him improve and mature.

In the meantime, we’re gonna have to sit here and hear all these guys rip him to shreds.

  203. RaiderYYZ Says:

Richochet all i’m saying is I always take comments to the media with a grain of salt.

So much has been put squarly on his shoulders alone which I think is unfair that at this point what is he supposed to do? I didn’t hear Mark Sanchez say anything about playing better after 5 INT’s.

“Seek out coaches instead of the opposite”…
    C’mon that’s knit-picking…

If when Schilens comes back and he’s 100%, the line is giving him at least a little time, combined with more time with Murphy & Hey bey and he’s still playing this bad then I will be more critical.

Until then I don’t think the circumstances merit much higher expectations to be honest.

  204. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

So Jerry asks Cable whether Russell should face the media and face up to his mistakes in the game and Cable says: “I think when he’s comfortable enough to do that, mature enough to do that…”!

    Ist drive-a fumble.
    2nd drive-an interception.
    3rd drive-an interception.

Then after the game we get Russell arging with the coach and refusing to any kind of responsibility.

Cable probably wants to bench this guy like crazy but Al wants him to play.

  210. los raiders de don rober Says:

I know I’m not gonna look good at 80. But man, sad sight of a man that does not know how to let go when everything around him is falling to shreds….

  211. LA to TheBay Says:

    I’m tired of “athletic” QBs.

    Russell is a project.

    Either you

    A) Bench him and allow him to develop there
    B) Start him and hope he develops on the fly
    C) Cut him in an uncapped year and start over

I would say they should restructure his deal as best they can and sit him behind a guy with a chip on his shoulder and who is real hungry (no jokes please, too easy).

Gannon would throw rocks at Gruden’s window at 6 AM to let him in the building. The had to make Gannon a key.

Him and Gruden watched film constantly. Gannon may have been a system QB, and a noodle arm, etc, etc., but the guy had an unmatched work ethic and a chip on his shoulder.

Of course it took a coach with unwaivering faith in him and smarts enough to build a team around him and weed out the malcontents.

Cable looks like he’s trying (in his own words, “I’m just a ball coach, fellas”) but few are responding, at least consistently. And he certainly is not an X’s and O’s guy.

Maybe if you look at it like Cable, Hackett, and co. are trying to coach up young players and instill in them a mindset rather than an Xs and Os approach. They’ll learn under fire and be that much better once they have a real system and some consistency down the road.

Al has to be willing to take a chance again and get a coach who will not only get in the players’ faces, but his own as well.

You don’t have to dump the philosophy/identity entirely. You can keep that intact and play smart, modern football.

I doubt if you have a good read on the Sunday comic page, much less other people’s psyche’s.

RICHOCHET: Huh??? He “likes his buddies”?? Wow. Gosh. Thanks. Well, hell…that sure clears things up, doesn’t it? Yeah, lol..big time grasp on his “psyche”..
Doesn’t EVERYONE care about those “close to them’? What the hell does that have to do with him not giving a damn about his conditioning, or his play? NOTHING..that’s what.

    #####################

    2. He’s very immature. Not immature as in he doesn’t give a crap what anyone says, but, rather – that he is completely overwhelmed by having so much money and having 30 microphones in his face.

RICHOCHET: Not liking mics has nothing to do with being in love with the buffet table, bling, and being a party animal with his “entourage”. Overwhelmed? WTF??? Guy has mic’s in his face AFTER A GAME..that’s it. All week long and ALL OFFSEASON LONG he can do those extra things to help the team, yet he doesn’t.
Weak ass excuse, as usual, Silver-n-Whine.

    ####################

    3. With that being said, and despite his 275 pound frame, I think he’s INSECURE AS HELL. That may sound crazy but it’s the truth. RICHOCHET: And YOU are an idiot. Insecure? lol..dude, you have zero grasp of psyche’s. See, someone insecure? They are NEVER happy with how they’re doing, you moron. Insecure people NEVER state “it’s not me” or “I’m happy where I am.” Insecure people usually stay longer on a job, put in extra hours, always thinking they can do something better…because THEY AREN’T SECURE IN WHAT THEY JUST DID. Russell is blase’, not insecure. Russell is “slow”, not insecure. Russell just couldn’t give a damn, and that’s NOT WHAT INSECURE PEOPLE DO. An insecure qb would fret over every miss, fumble, interception.
    Russell?? “ho-hum…where’s the bench..my beanie..WHERE’S MY BEANIE??”

And honestly? “possy”?? What’s a possy? Oh, you mean posse..ok, got it.
BTW..that comment about not wanting to admit it to his “friends watching’? ROFLMFAO..wow..arguably the dumbest thing you’ve ever said, and that says a lot.

    ###################3

Jamarcus does care, but until he grows up some and realizes that you’re more of a man when you admit that you’re wrong, he’ll continue to put up that self-defense shield.

RICHOCHET: Oh stop, lol. JR “cares’? When you come in, ADMITTING YOU’RE OUT OF SHAPE, AND VASTLY OVERWEIGHT..explain how he CARES??? Oh, yeah, he cares that everyone is POINTING OUT HIS BAD PLAY, but doesn’t give one damn about doing anything about it. He CARES that he’s called out for his bad throws, but instead CASTS THE BLAME TO THE REST OF THE TEAM.
He cares that his $150,000 diamond encrusted necklace jersey is centered exactly over his protruding gut when someone pulls out a camera, but doesn’t care enough to get rid of the gut.

    #####################

I may be the only human being on earth (besides Al) who thinks he’s going to be a good quarterback. The Raiders haven’t made it easy for him – that’s for sure.

RICHOCHET: Bravo..you now have joined the “blame EVERYONE BUT JR” brigade.

See, that’s exactly what losers do.
Winners? Leaders? They take it upon themselves to make themselves better, and those around them.
Losers always have excuses. Always point the finger elsewhere…you know…like you do.

    And Russell.

  216. RaiderYYZ Says:

“RICHOCHET: Bravo..you now have joined the “blame EVERYONE BUT JR” brigade.”

I’m spreading the wealth of blame evenly. JaMarcus gets a share. Cable gets a share. The wr’s get a share. The O-LINE gets a share.

Add up all other shares and Jamarcus is still getting more of the blame. Can you henstly say that’s justified?

Last 2 weeks Eli Manning has 5 turnovers, and has completed less than 50% of his passes, Giants are 0-2.

This from 2 weeks of poor O-Line play (this past week first time in over 2 seasons a SINGLE member of O-Line is out), wr’s dropping passes and missing routes.

I’m not comparing JaMarcus to Eli, my point is put Eli on the Raiders and he’s no longer Eli Manning.

I won’t lay total blame on JaMarcus until he actually has a legitimate opportunity to succeed and he is single handedly holding them back, a la what Tavaris Jackson sis for the Vikes.

NO WAY IN HELL he becomes a starter anywhere else..ever.

    Think about it.

    You start a new job.
You’re handed a massive bank account, new Maserati, new mansion..IN ADVANCE.
You then are asked to do your best..BUT YOU DECIDE YOU’RE NOT GOING TO. When questioned about why your results are the worst IN THE COMPANY? You reply “not my fault. everyone else’s fault..but not mine”
When asked ‘don’t you think you can do better?” You reply “No, I think I’m doing just fine.”

Now..WHY would someone decide to do elsewhere what he refuses to do for the company that handed him the Golden Ticket?

Anyone that saw JaMarcus as the reporter “do you think it’s my fault” could see that the kid was nervous and uncomfortable answering questions about his poor play.

That doesn’t make him a loser and it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care.

As I said before, that’s a defense-mechanism from someone who’s simply not mature enough yet to handle things in the “right” way.

When DHB drops passes, there is not nearly the amount of pressure & scrutiny on him that there is with a #1 QB pick in the entire draft. That tag has ruined many a player in the past.

Look at Alex Smith. Great kid. Good work ethic, but, completely folded under that pressure.

Not to mention that he’s just not very good. The half of football that he just played, against a vanilla defense, was the best half of football that kid has EVER played in the NFL.

And here he is, 5 years after being drafted, with the opportunity to revive his career.

JaMarcus has had WAY more positive moments and has shown WAY more potential than Smith ever did.

And here we are, after like 23 starts in the league and people want to give up on him.

    Impatience is lame.

    Honestly, I can.

When a player is the WORST PLAYER in the NFL, at his position?
When that same player refuses to take any blame?
When that same player refuses to accept responsibility?
When that same player comes into camp out of shape?
When that same player shows up unprepared? As in STILL doesn’t know the whole playbook?

The last comment alone is indicative of the problem. Honestly, can you find a single solid reason that JR didn’t at least LEARN THE PLAYBOOK THIS PAST OFFSEASON?
He sure as hell wasn’t working out, right?

Every position above mentioned came into camp in the best possible shape..except for JR.
Every position mentioned above studied and learned the playbook in their FIRST year..except JR.
Every single position/person mentioned above has clearly accepted responsibility/blame for their mistakes, except JR.

    Why give JR a pass?
What has he done to deserve all of this forgiving?

    Nothing.

    Good point.
Did you notice how, prior to being yanked, he would just go sit..by himself…all relaxed?

Then Grab goes in..and NOW JR HAS ON HIS HELMET? Stands there for 15-20 minutes…helmet on..Like “Ok, now I’m ready to play”??

  238. RaiderRockstar Says:

Richochet : I think you’re giving Russell too much slack … you forgot to mention that he has missed at least 1 meeting and was late for several others.

he also threw one of his WR’s under the bus recently.

  239. LA to TheBay Says:

JaMarcus Russell = Willie Beaman without the jets.

I don’t claim to know what goes on in his head and I’ve told others they shouldn’t presume to either.

I only know what I see as a fan and someone who’s been around football for a while.

The way he’s responding to the media won’t endear him to his teammates. They’re in the locker room fielding questions about his poor play and he is nowhere to be found. I can only hope hes taped his eyes open and is having a serious coffee-enduced marathon film session with Hackett.

He does have the physical tools to be a great QB. Anyone who argues that just doesn’t see it and that’s fine. He takes time to get into his drop and his footwork is lousy, but when he makes the correct read, plants, and lets it fly, it’s money.

It would seem to me he’s thinking too much and that after a year and a half of being hidden by Kiffin and Cable, then told he’s been given the keys, let er rip, but wait, we’re going to overhaul your mechanics, he’s seriously out of rhthym.

I also think he’s possibly slow, but more likely he’s a guy with ice water in his veins, so he looks indifferent and the game has not slowed down for him.

The bottom line is this: potential means nothing. If he got his head in the right spot, he could tear it up.

Currently, its not and unfortunately, the organization hes in is a mess and his coach is too aggressive in his play calling.

  240. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

The problem with the team really isn’t Cable. You can question his play calling but with a good OC he could be a real good head coach.

The problem is the number 80.

Al Davis is and always will be a football genius but he just can’t do it all any more. No one can do at 80 what they even did at 70. It’s physiologically impossible.
He needs to retire at least 95% and hire a really good GM who has complete authority.

Al, at 80, knows he doesn’t have that long and he wants a winner to go out on.
The way he sees it he can’t afford to wait so he’s taking more gambles than usual.
How else do you explain the draft when we were so desperate for OL and DL players?

    Actually, that’s incorrect.

Only ONE helmet can receive signals. No more than one. Some teams have just one helmet with the green dot on it, and have had instances where the backup would go in quickly, because of an injury, and had to wait to switch helmets, and had to have players run in the plays, like days of old.

In every other instance? Other teams? The backup, waiting/hoping to go in? Is RIGHT NEXT TO THE GUY CALLING THE PLAYS..in some cases they’re the ones actually calling in the plays, which is the coaches way of keeping them involved, and learning what’s going on.

BTW..I don’t think Jr’s a bad guy, just a spoiled rotten clueless football player who apparently doesn’t have the desire to apply himself.

    Isn’t that the real shame?

    2 – cover Sproles, Gates & Jackson

Fargas & Bush have a combined 110 carries for 408 yards & 2 TD’s (both by Bush – of course). thats 3.7 yards per carry

Russel has 4 issues: 1) his wasteline 2) A new coach and scheme every year 3) confidence in this team starting with himself, to the line, to the coaches, to the D. 4) A veteran WR that he count on to get open.

I am not Russel fan but you put the back up in the game and I saw the same garbage play.
    ………………………………..

I’ll take this bet. Russell is overweight, slow to read defenses, telegraphs his throws, has a slow release, has footwork problems, accuracy problems, horrible work ethic, lacks leadership qualities, and can’t even speak freakin english for God’s sake.

  275. LA to TheBay Says:

In order to beat SD, you have to play smart football and call high percentage plays.

They won’t be caught of guard a second time. The reason we almost won the game was managable 3rd down situations (which we converted the fist 5, I believe), and resiliency.

After the early pick and fumble, we continued to battle back and were close enough to not fold.

We outmuscled them physically, a feat we were only able to achieve one other time this season and we got a W out of it.

    Again, keys to the game:

-Start well early. No holes to climb out of.
-Run the ball. Keep your D off the field.
-Play action is where Russell is his best.
    -Miller Time!!
-Play with heart, play with fire.

    Who wants it more?
    Commitment to excellence.
    Pride and poise.
    Just win, baby.

All sound like corny slogans, but they’re all essentially right.

The team that is more poised, focused and plays with more violence, like they want it more, is the team that will just win. Baby.

The 2nd QB has the mic in his helmet. Typically, the 2nd QB does not have his helmet on, as he does not expect to play. That’s why you see most of them with the headset on.

Even Robert Gallery, in street clothing, has the play calls fed to him via microphone.

On MNF, Russell was knocked out of the game briefly. After getting attention on the sideline, he had his helmet on, right on the chalk, ready to get back in.

Whether or not he was ready to play or listening to play calls last Sunday, I have no problems with.

I like that he’s eager to get back into the play, but I would also like to see him talking to his WRs and coach on the sideline. Usually he goes to his spot on the bench, and Grad is pretty much the first one over there, followed typically by the coaches and Frye.

  280. LA to TheBay Says:

If Russell ends up talking with Cable before he hits the bench, it’s usually because Cable initiated it, although occasionally Russell comes to him, for example after the Murphy No-TD.

Cable has also been getting on Russell the last two weeks on the sideline. During the Eagles game, he came out on the field and was pointing out what should have happened on the play.

I must say, that is one thing I’ve seen from Cable recently I like.

He needs to treat SD just like after the NYG game.

  284. Silver-n-Smac Says:

Look, I’ve watched football for 30 years (as have many of you) and I’ve seen many great QB’s go to the bench, BY THEMSELVES and sit down BY THEMSELVES, to cool off, get their minds straight, do whatever they feel they need to do for their own state of mind at that particular moment.

It doesn’t always need to be rah, rah on the sidelines all the time.

Looking at photos on the bench, or discussing every angle of every play with the QB coach is great. But it doesn’t mean you always have to do it to succeed. The camera always goes to Russell right when he goes to the bench. But, there’s also been plenty of shots os him with Hackett & Grad., discussing what just happened.

    LMN:
Glad to see things are going good.

    You’re right. This blog sucks.

  286. Silver-n-Smac Says:

I don’t think Cable is an Al puppet at all. I think he respects what Al wants in the big picture. But, he (Cable) is his own man.

I think he’s a blue-collar guy who loves this team, but, is not gonna let any player on this team end his career.

If he is going to get fired, it’s gonna be on his own terms. I don’t think Cable will hesitate to put any guy on this football team on the bench if it’s warranted.

His reluctance to bench Russell has had way more to do with the fact that he clearly is our future and Gradkowski is not.

You have to ask yourself. Would we win a couple more games with Grad? Probably, yes.

But, who gives us the best chance in the long run, a Russell with more experience and maturity? Or a Gradkowski?

    Answer: Russell.

And until we know the answer is definitely NOT Russell, you have to stay with this kid until at least 3 actual years of football played on the field.

THEN & NOW: Davis’ world left bad taste in L.A.’s mouth
    By Jim McConnell, Staff Writer
    Posted: 10/26/2009 11:01:42 PM PDT

Back in the 1980s, I was the assistant sports editor of the Pomona newspaper.

Thus it was one fall day, when the sports editor was away from the desk, that a call was routed to me. The caller identified himself as Al LoCasale. At the time, LoCasale was, by all indications, the No. 2 man in the Los Angeles Raiders organization. His exact title now escapes me. It might have been Grand Poo-bah. Raiders football, and front office, nomenclature is quite bizarre.

So, why was LoCasale calling? He had a complaint. Specifically, it turned out that his boss, Al Davis, had assembled the news clips from our paper for the season to date. After further review, Davis discovered the Rams had received 249 column inches, and the Raiders “only” 235.

LoCasale said that “Mr. Davis was quite disappointed” with our coverage and fully expected little ol’ me to do something about it. Now.

Welcome to Raiders World, where the only reality that counts is that of Al Davis.

No discussion of NFL football in Los Angeles would be complete without mention of Davis. The Raiders called the Coliseum home from 1981 to 1994. They retain a large and loyal fan base in the Southland, despite fleeing L.A. for their native Oakland in 1995 and despite their woeful on-field record in recent years.

It seems many still admire Davis’ renegade approach to football, and business. This admiration comes easy to those who never worked for, or attempted to work with, Davis.

No question, he has accomplished great things. But those accomplishments remind one of the woodsman who leveled a forest to build an exquisite matchbox.

“It’s a lot easier to work with Al once you accept the fact that he’s the Antichrist,” the late John McKay once told me. McKay, who worked alongside Davis when they were both on the USC football staff in the late 1950s, said Al was the same then as he was later on, when the pair knocked heads in the NFL.

“To Al, two’s a crowd,” McKay said.

Davis grew up in Brooklyn, a city much maligned. He gained fame in Oakland, a city even more maligned. Perhaps the geography explains why Davis has always relished the role of the outsider.

Davis’ football roots include the stint at USC and three years on the staff of Sid Gillman with the San Diego Chargers. From there, he took over as head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 1963.

He’s been Mr. Raider ever since, except for a brief period of time in 1966 when he served as commissioner of the AFL. He resisted the merger with the NFL and quit when the majority of AFL owners did not.

While his team now plays in the NFL, you get the feeling he’s never fully accepted the merger. Again, this may help explain his attachment to the rogue image for his Raiders.

A long-simmering dispute with the Alameda-Oakland Coliseum Commission led to Davis pulling up stakes and heading south for the 1982 season. The Rams had abandoned the L.A. Coliseum for Anaheim, and the Raiders slid right in.

It developed that Davis was no more successful, or diplomatic, when dealing the L.A. Coliseum Commission. From the start, it was not a match made in heaven. The NFL, which had voted against Davis’ move to L.A., did little to help him once he got here.

Despite all the drama off the field, on the field the Raiders were winners. They went 8-1 in a strike-shortened 1982 season, and 12-4 in 1983. In the 1983 playoffs, they beat the arch-enemy Pittsburgh Steelers 38-10 in the first round and Seattle 30-14 in the AFC finals. That elevated L.A. to the Super Bowl, where it upset Washington 38-9 to win the NFL title.

It was likely Davis’ most satisfying moment. It was also the highlight to the franchise’s stay in L.A.

The Raiders returned to the playoffs in 1984 and 1985, but lost both times in the first round. The 1986, ‘87, ‘88 and ‘89 teams failed to make the postseason. By then, it was clear that Davis loved a good fight. Unfortunately, most of his fights were non-football-related. They may have improved Davis’ bank account, but they did nothing to improve the Raiders roster. The attention paid to something as trivial as a stack of press clippings took away from things more important, such as acquiring a quality NFL quarterback.

The team had one last hurrah in L.A., though. The 1990 Raiders went 12-4 and beat Cincinnati 20-10 in the first round of the playoffs. What followed, however, turned out to be the signature game for the franchise for the next 20 years – L.A. trekked to Buffalo and lost 51-3 to the Bills.

The Raiders made it back to the playoffs in 1991 and ‘93, but failed to make it back to the Super Bowl either year. A 9-7 season in 1994 closed out the team’s run in L.A.

Davis, never happy dealing with the L.A. Coliseum Commission (or any group that didn’t wear silver and black), was unable to convince anyone else to build a stadium for him. His “Commitment to Excellence” appeared to be more and more an obsession with conflict.

Angelenos may not be all that far removed from the days of the Dons, but L.A. is the showbiz capital of the world. We know a bad actor when we see one.

Nearly every day, thousands of commuters drive past the gravel pit there in Irwindale where Davis was going to build his stately pleasure dome. It’s a fitting monument to a man who cut deep but came up empty.

  307. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Raiders: Crypt keeper/managing partner Al Davis has forgotten more football than John Madden will ever remember — a fact that makes Davis’ current mismanagement of the once-proud Raiders into stumblebum status all the more perplexing. Is Davis’ draft-day obsession with straight-line speed pathological … or merely childlike? Did former coach Lane Kiffin really deserve the overhead projector treatment? Is Davis still smarting over the AFL-NFL merger? The answers are blowing in the autumn wind. Grade: A (1963-2002), F (2003-present)

Raiders: Tom Cable will not be indicted for allegedly assaulting a former assistant coach. This qualifies as news! It also means that Oakland won’t have to endure the absence of a head coach who was a loser at Idaho (11-35) and is 6-13 since taking over for Kiffin. Lucky Raiders. Grade: F-plus

Raiders: Hard to say. On one hand, speedy first-round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey has just four receptions in seven games; on the other, Oakland stuck it to Bay Area rival San Francisco by drafting Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree. On one hand, running back Darren McFadden showed promise as a rookie; on the other, he’s always injured. On one hand, JaMarcus Russell can throw a football 50-plus yards off one knee; on the other, he’s likely to be holding a slice of pizza in his other hand while doing it. Sum it up like this: The Raiders are quite possibly the planet’s only pigskin organization that could make Randy Moss look like a has-been. Grade: D

Raiders: After the Raiders scored 16 points over a three-game span — the third-worst stretch in franchise history — Cable told reporters “That’s not who we are.” Au contraire! Since Cable assumed command of Oakland midway through last season, the Raiders have scored less than 10 points eight times, something that happened to the Raiders six times in the entire decade of the 1970s. No wonder New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce likened playing against Oakland to playing in an intrasquad scrimmage. Also, six consecutive seasons of 11 or more losses seems like an intentional middle finger to the NFL’s socialistic draft and revenue-sharing mechanisms. Does Davis hate the House that Rozelle Built that much? Grade: F-minus

Raiders: Tony Dungy advised Michael Vick — Michael Vick! — to avoid them. He was wise to do so. Grade: F-minus

Raiders: “Right now we’re kind of the laughingstock of the NFL.” — Defensive end Greg Ellis, not under the influence of Sodium Pentothal. Grade: B

    1. Contrary to common belief, it was not the AFL that initiated merger talks, but the NFL, fearful that Davis’ “take no prisoners” tactics would seriously reduce its talent base. Dallas Cowboys general manager Tex Schramm secretly contacted AFL owners and asked if they were interested in a merger. The talks were conducted without the knowledge of Davis, the AFL commissioner. By June 8, 1966, the collaborators announced a merger agreement.
    2. Long-time sports writer Jerry Magee of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote: “Al Davis taking over as commissioner was the strongest thing the AFL ever did. He thought the AFL–NFL merger was a detriment to the AFL.”
    3. Raiders owner Al Davis won an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL in 1982, based on his contention that the NFL could not prevent franchises from moving, i.e. that Rozelle’s public pledge had no legal standing against an owner who wanted to move his club in defiance of that pledge.

The article quoted by MR was not based on fact in certain issues. The L.A. Coliseum Commission agreed to a remodel of the stadium as a condition of moving to L.A. and agreed to have the renovations completed in time for the 1984 Olympics. Did not happen. Whe AD threatened to move back the 1st time, renovations were started and the field was raised and the running track was eliminated. Promised luxury suites never were built. Al made the deal with Irwindale which approached Tom Flores. Not wanting to be lied to again, Al insisted on a non-refundable deposit. The County of L.A. refused to give the land for the parking lots and the project was scuttled. There was the Hollywood Park proposal next to the Forum but the NFL interferred. Al went back to Oakland only because he had been lied too. That is the facts. He does not have to give up ownership of the Raiders for the new L.A. Stadium just like Jerry Buss did not give up the Lakers for the Staples Center (built by Roski). Just 5%

  314. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

ExLa, my only real problem with Al Davis is his management of the Raiders. I’ll post articles with a lot of other criticisms of him, that I may or may not disagree with. My point about Al Davis is simple: He’s not qualified to run the football operations of an NFL franchise, and considering Ron Wolf’s biography, I’m really not sure if he ever was. He’s detrimental to the process of the Raiders winning a championship. He has to retire before the Raiders will ever be a winning team again, let alone win a championship. Send e mails to those columnists you disagree with regarding league merger issues. I don’t care.

    Los Angeles Times
    September 12, 1990
Davis and Spectacor Management Group, the private firm that manages the Los Angeles Coliseum, agreed Monday to a 20-year lease in exchange for a privately financed, $145-million renovation of the Coliseum. This includes stadium improvements the Raiders claimed they were promised when they moved here from Oakland in 1982.

In addition, it is said the Raiders will receive $32 million in advance cash payments from Spectacor and forgiveness of a $10-million debt the team owes the Coliseum Commission.

But with all the fanfare, there is still a catch: The contract could be void in a few years if Spectacor does not produce an environmental impact report allowing the multimillion dollar renovation of the Coliseum and raise the private financing to ,pay for it.

Plans to renovate the 67-year-old Coliseum call for retention of the historic existing exterior walls. The interior, however, will be drastically altered to include the following:

–A reduction in stadium capacity from 92,500 seats to 70,000 for Raider games and 85,000 for USC games. Davis said Tuesday he actually wants only 65,000 seats.

–Construction of as many as 250 luxury boxes at mid-level of the stadium and 15,000 club seats.

The environmental impact report is expected to take a year. Reconstruction would begin after the 1991 Raider and USC seasons. During the 1992 season, both USC and the Raiders will have to play elsewhere. Speculation is the Raiders will play at Dodger Stadium and USC at Anaheim Stadium.

I think they opened it up more and more down the stretch, culminating in the solid performance in TB.

I see why Al and the coaches wnated to open it up for him. With a better offseason and current circumstances, it may have worked out.

It may be only week 8, but that’s how the story will end. He hasn’t stepped up to the mic and gone out of his way to support his teammates, the only thing he did this week was deflect blame and place it on others. No way grown-men put up with that, especially after 3 turnovers in a quarter.

We will probably see a little of Gradowski and Frye sprinkled in the rest of the year, and Russell having one more offseason to prove to his teammates he will put in the work necessary to win and lead as a team.

Last year, Russell had 11 TD’s & only 8 Int’s. That’s what makes his start this year so perplexing.

This is my own personal philosophy. Last year, the Raiders stuck with Curry & Walker until deep into the season. When Higgins & Schilens finally got some legit playing time, the offense & JaMarcus, in particular, started to click. So, at that infamous press conference, Al ripped Kiffin for not playing the young guys sooner.

Well, the success they had with Higgins & Schilens is that it gave Al a false sense that this is the way to go from now on. So, what do they do this year? They start the season with 2 rookie receivers – something that has only been done 1 other time in the NFL over the past 30 years.

I think what the Raiders didn’t consider strongly enough, though, is that Higgins & Schilens didn’t start the season last year. They spend the majority of the year watching the successes & failures of Curry & Walker and how they handled or didn’t handle media scrutiny.

I think the Raiders have done J-Russ and those two young rookies a disservice by starting them so soon. With that being said, maybe Al already knew this wasn’t going to be a playoff team this year and just said “screw it – let’s put all our young guys in and let’em learn on the fly, and we’ll be that much more ready to make a playoff run next season.”

If that really was the logic and he’s planning on getting some legit O-Lineman in here next summer, then I think it’s a plan that may prove to be successful by year’s end.

It looks really bad while we’re going through it right now, but, maybe it’ll be worth it in the long-run.

    ====================================
Rah rah? WTF??? Who’s talking about rah rah? we’re talking about COMMUNICATING with the HC..with the OC..discussing what just happened, what should happen.
Russell can’t do anything right, yet he NEVER goes for advice..just plops down. No urgency to talk with anyone, no desire to discuss what should have been done.

As far as “own state of mind’?

Cable’s also been in his face quite a bit more the last two weeks. That, plus his comments recently would tell me he’s getting pretty impatient.

MR, your are entitled to your point of view without being drowned out. I kinda agree that AD needs to hire a G.M. But remember, all owners meddle. It’s their team.

    ………….

I agree. All owners do meddle. It’s just that Al is a lot dumber than most of them. It’s not that I want an owner who doesn’t meddle. More like, I want an owner who understands today’s game and knows what he’s doing.

  341. LA to TheBay Says:

Oak, is that Tollner? I was under the impression Tollner was in the booth, but I’m not sure.

I am sure he has discussions with coaches. I can tell because of the disinterested look on Russell’s face and the fact that said coaches are 70+ years old.

  342. LA to TheBay Says:

Seriously, though, Russell does review and you can tell he is taking it seriously, despite my joke.

He typically has pretty good plays out of timeouts, so you know he’s listening to what Cable and Co. are saying.

Russell can’t do anything right, yet he NEVER goes for advice..just plops down. No urgency to talk with anyone, no desire to discuss what should have been done.
    ======================================

It’s these kinds of idiotic statements that rack-ette demonstrates he and others don’t know what the fook they’re talking about. Of course he talks to Tollner his coach after he comes off the field. Tollner is standing right there, going over the defenses with him Frye and Gradkowski. Of course you have no idea who Tollner is. You think Tollner is some type of cookie. Now just please STFU.
    ==============================
    Bull****.
See, if you actually went to the games, you would know that he IMMEDIATELY goes and sits down. Wherever he can plop his ass. The coaches, AS I ALREADY STATED, FOOL, seek Russell out. THEY GO TO HIM to bring printouts, not the other way around.

Of course, considering you’re a lying ass dog..you wouldn’t know about what actually goes on, on the sidelines, would you?

It’s kind of a standing joke now, with announcers, and with some fans that Russell is more concerned about getting his beanie on, than anything else.
That’s why you see so many pics of him sitting there, with that dull look around the eyes, staring off, as if he’s high…you know, little man..like you are..on a daily basis. In EVERY instance, Russell is sitting..BY HIMSELF MOST TIMES..before the assts come find HIM..moron.

  344. LA to TheBay Says:

I think the beanie is his defense mechanism. Like his ‘invisible’ hat or something.

Maybe he lost a bet and is just trying to cover up that ridiculous frohawk.

  347. LA to TheBay Says:

    VR,

I don’t know. The question becomes, are you learning good football in bad football games or is your confidence being whithered away and learning nothing but how to lose?

It all comes down to the individual, IMO.

If you come prepared and play hard, even on a poor team, usually you stick around in this league and can still be a Pro Bowler or be patient and get your shot when you team finally puts it together (IE Adrian Wilson, Tim Brown, etc).

  348. LA to TheBay Says:

    Don’t know.

  349. Coach on Wheels Says:

    JHILL -

You might want to stop talking down to peeps about your football knowledge when YOU ARE WRONG in so many ways –

Four Vertical routes? Genius, THERE ARE FIVE ELIGBLE RECEIVERS EVERY PLAY. The checkdown is almost always there so it isn’t part of the play name.

If Russel put the offense in the wrong formation it can screw up the match-ups and blocking but the checkdown is still there.

    JR is terrible – period.

    Other retarded cooments –

“The D quit after JR was benched.” – lol The D gave up 24 points with JR, 14 with Gradkowski.

“Gradkowski isn’t an answer.” Why? He’s better than JR. He isn’t old. How do you geniuses know he won’t be the next Plunkett or Hostettler or Gannon? The reality is with less time under Cable and far fewer reps in practice he moves the offense and displays more leadership than JaWalrus.

Jhill might want to learn something about football before he calls anybody else out.

Seymour can still be a big force in turning our d around and I really think he is trying everyway possible with both positive and negative things to try and motivate people. Hell if im a professional football player and someone says I cant even beat high schoolers Im showing up to knock some peoples heads off the next Sunday. The 1st charger game was close. This game will either be down to the wire again or San Diego will blow us out. All depends how the players react. Gradkowski is better than Russell? LMFAO! That’s your “coaching knowledge” argument? Ok, you win. Now you know I called for Gradkowski in game 2, right!

So are you telling me that Barnes got pancaked because we were in the wrong formation?

The coach said he called a play with 4 vertical routes. Not my analysis, but the coach’s word. I see you trying to lawyer for a guy in your profession, lol, by referencing Russell leaking out of the backfield.

Russell the muscle’s first responsibility is a chip or at least a look at the Dline for a possible blitz pick up. Right….COACH? I mean with 4 vertical patterns and a suspect Oline, what would YOU do ….. COACH? Now if you tell me that there was time for the RB to be in the pattern before Pace got to Russell …..

Then I disagree. Is that OK? Can I disagree with you and your little brother Mista? Sorry if me disagreeing with someone and talking more football than BS is considered talking down to someone.

I say Cable is a bad play caller. He had ZERO experience that would qualify him for the position, and the gamble is not paying off. Denver game, vertical routes out of our end zone to start the game. Same thing last week. Coach says he knows better BUT wants to be aggressive.

What do you say about Cable, COACH?

I say Pears (oh he got benched already), Carlisle, Morris, and Satele are awful. 4 of 5 starters that is,

    What do you say, COACH?

I say our rookie WRs are, well, rookie WRs. BOTH of them.

I said Russell should have been benched week 2.

Gradkowski is NOT better than Russell, they BOTH suck!

    Gradkowski is better than Russell?
    =======================================

I have to agree with Jhill on this one. There is absolutely no way in hell that Gradkowski is a better Q than Russell. The reason he had what limited success he did was the Jet defense was not at all prepared for him, and were still in the Russell defense. As soon as the Jet defense realized Grad was not going to complete a pass more than 5 yards down the field, and his running was his best weapon, they jammed up the line, and he went nowhere. That is pretty obvious.

  365. Oakglenn Says:

The team did seem a bit more focused with Gradkowski in there. That tells you something. If Russell at all falters, Grad and Frye should have their hats on, and be ready to go in.

There are just too many problems, too much of an attitude and mental shift needs to happen. This is a three year project, from today on. This season is over. Over.Finished. Next season just might see six wins. Depends on how significant the changes in the offseason are in both personell and in attitude, belief. I don’t see 11-5 happening for like four years. Maybe three years, but that would be some serious work behind the scenes going on for that result. Meanwhile, I’ll be watching all along, patient and pissed off, waiting for Raider brutality and dominance to emerge once again.
