Russell should be accountable

No sign of JaMarcus Russell. No surprise.

It’s not the way the Raiders operate, urging players to be available during open locker room sessions, and it’s never the way Russell has handled himself since he arrived as the first pick of the 2007 NFL draft.

More than just the media is watching Russell closely now. In the aftermath of Sunday’s 38-0 loss to the New York Jets, and a pointed critique from coach Tom Cable, Russell essentially shrugged his shoulders and said he had no idea what his coach was talking about.

He didn’t have time to checkdown, the first interception came when a defender crosses his face and the one in the end zone intended for Todd Watkins was giving the wide receiver a chance to make a play.

Russell didn’t sound as if wanted any of his decisions or plays back.

Here’s what a face of the franchise does after a bad game:

He plants himself in front of the locker and takes on all questions. He takes responsibility for the bad plays, analyzes what went wrong, and not just for the sake of the media.

Russell does it so his teammates don’t have to alibi for him. He does it so his teammates realize he’s taking it to heart.

A good P.R. staff points out the ancillary benefit of Russell taking on all comers on Monday. Once Russell deals with his struggles on the first day of the week, then the story is cycled through the news and morphs into something else as the week goes on.

They urge the quarterback to get it out of the way now, put it behind him, and focus on the next opponent.

Assuming Russell, as per his custom this season, doesn’t talk until Thursday, the quarterback issue essenially remains on the table through Friday’s papers, when his responses reach print.

More to come following Tom Cable’s press conference . . .

it’s not JaMarcus’ fault that Kalif Barnes got run over on the first play of the game.

it’s not JaMarcus’ fault that Louis Murphy dropped a pass on 3rd down on the second series of the game.

it’s not JaMarcus’ fault that Todd Watkins allows Revis to cut in front of him, jump over him and pretty much force him to the ground and get an INT.

JaMarcus has a lot of issues, but he’s not the problem right now.

Al was still the owner when chucky was here. Al was still the owner when chucky LEFT and the team still went to the super-bowl.

The problem for whatever reason is this team either shows up or doesn’t show up to play. They are not a talentless team, indicating poor drafting. They simply either come to play or don’t and win or lose usually based on this alone. I don’t blame this entirely on the players, coaches or ownership.

I don’t really know how this continues to happen.

I agree…benching Russell in favor of Frye or Garbagekowski would be a JOKE!

We have to see if Russell can show some signs. Starting those other two worthless QBs takes us NOWHERE!

Russell has work ethic and attitude problems, but he also lacks a quality HC, quality WRs, a running game and a decent scheme.

Start by hiring a legit NFL HC. Demand Russell restructure his contract after the season to be incentive laden or he will be cut in 2010…maybe money can motivate him (I am sure the moron has burned through most of his signing bonus on cheesy necklaces and expensive coats, cars and homes). Fix the o-line FIRST, then worry about WRs. Get the running game going and stick with it until Russell can make some plays.

    COME ON ALREADY!

Boycott, are you guys crazy? The majority of the Raider Nation has sworn an oath to Al Davis.

I swear by God this sacred oath that I shall render unconditional obedience to Al Davis, the Managing General Partner of the Oakland Raiders and the supreme commander of the Raider Nation, and that I shall at all times be ready, as a brave fan, to give my life for this oath no matter how far the Franchise is driven into the ground by his actions.

Good luck with your little boycott…Al has way too many morons swinging from his nutz for it to work.

Many morons in here actually think Al Davis IS THE OAKLAND RAIDERS!

    ^^^^^^^DAKOTA,

A semi boycott has already been happening this year….the home games are blacked out because only 35K people show up out a 60K capacity stadium!

People are tired of Al Davis and his stupid ways of ruining this once proud franchise and are NOT showing up to the games! Thats the way to hurt the old man in his pockets.

I had some friend who just go to the freakin tailgate to party and then at game time….they hit BART and go back home!

hahaha….is that hilariously pathetic or what….people show up to tailgate, but don’t buy a ticket to the actual game?? LOL

    ================================================

I knew we were NOT going to make a run. We just weren’t. What I did expect tho, is for the team to get better and better and the players to get better and better. After the first game, there seemed to be something there to build on. The second game, we played poorly, yet WON. Certainly something there to build on. The last two games have been nothing but regression. Regression on offense, regression on defense, regression on special teams. This team is NOT good enough to regress on any level. You have to ask yourself, why is this team regressing after one week?? Normally, teams improve the most between games one and two. You can’t blame the coaches. This same thing has happened to every coach that has come here. Kiffin did not run the Al Davis offense and he was 3-13 in his last 16 games before he got run. Maybe we should start cutting players left and right and signing undrafted free agent college players. What could happen?? We get blown out?? We are already getting blown out! Dmac ran what 8 times for MINUS three yards?? Shoot, I CAN GO OUT THERE AND GET NEGATIVE YARDAGE!

    LA to TheBay,

Yes Al is responsible for the greatness of what the Raiders once were…but the Raiders existed before him and they will exist after him. He is just a man, and right now he is the man most responsible for the WORST 7 YEAR RUN IN NFL HISTORY.

If Al Davis disappeared off the face of the Earth tomorrow, the Raiders would go on.

Just as companies are more than their CEOs, no matter how important the CEO once was, they still go on after the CEO is gone. Microsoft will continue after Gates steps aside. The same will be true for the Raider franchise once it is out of the grasp of Al Davis.

The thought of the LA Lakers without Jerry West was once thought to be unfathomable, and yet he left and they went on. The man that had his hand in every LA championship in franchise history stepped away and they continued on.

The Raiders are an entity that does not need Al Davis…Al Davis needs the Raiders. Fans want the Raiders to win and we hold Al Davis up for his past accomplishments, but his time has come and gone and he is holding the franchise back. He just doesn’t have the courage to step aside for the good of the Raiders.

Sad sad story, but hopefully we will live to see the end of the nightmare.

Though, Al is rich, and he may be able to live forever…maybe in 10 years they will be able to download his mind into an Ipod and he will run the Raiders clipped from the belt of John Herrera.

    God help us…..

Oh and by the way Al has screwed so many people he can forget LA,Gruden, and almost anybody with a professional reputation.

    Dakota,

I see, when you put it in those terms.

The Lakers are still the Lake Show. Their identitiy is still for the most part intact.

Whoever runs the show next really should keep the ‘mystique’ or whatever fruity name you want to give it, intact.

It must sound stupid to say it or read it aloud, but I’m sure most of you are no different than me. I was attracted to the uniforms since I was a little kid. My first conscience memories of watching Raider games was when we first got Bo Jackson.

I was bred on the Autmumn Wind, Us against The World mentality and the brash villain that ran the team.

My dad told me stories of Davis and the Oakland Raiders and met the guy in 82 and talked football with him for an hour. My dad was an insurance guy and that amazed me at the time that Al would take the time out to talk to a businessman about something other than business, but I’ve come to learn Al never wastes an opportunity to discuss the greatness of the Raiders.

I guess my point is, without the identity, I don’t know if I want to watch the Raiders.

If you moved them to LA (or wherever) and called them the LA ______’s, and changed the jersey and the identity, I don’t think they’d be my team anymore.

The identity can be intact and we can still win football games is what I’m trying to say I guess.

Mark Davis isn’t a football guy, bless his heart. Maybe he will hire capable GM, coaches, players, scouting staff, front office, etc. while still keeping it the Raiders.

    Otherwise its just another team.

  • RaiderYYZ

Since the Raiders picked Gallery/Grove in the 2004 draft they have not picked an OL in the first two rounds. We were all VERY HAPPY WITH AL after this draft I assume. Gallery was one of the biggest OL prospects in years, and Grove was the #1 rated center, a position of need.

The only two they’ve picked in the first 3 rounds since have been Paul McQuistan (3rd Round 2006 and crap), and Mario Henderson (3rd round 2007, half decent in my mind).

In all, the Raiders have drafted 4 OL IN TOTAL in the past 5 drafts.

Whether justified or not, Al has intentionally backed away from drafting OL. I guess Gallery, Grove, Langston Walker, and Matt Stinchcomb has changed his views…

You can’t win in football without an O-Line. Just look at the Giants and Falcons games yesterday…

This draft BETTER be different as we won’t be drafting QB, RB or WR…
