At least penalties are down
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 7:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Who says there’s no good news where the Raiders are concerned?
Either the NFL felt sorry for Al Davis and didn’t hold its annual “screw the Raiders” offseason meeting with officials this year or Tom Cable actually has an area where he can look at and have solid evidence of progress.
Through seven games, the Raiders have 41 penalties for 312 yards, tied for 12th in penalties and 21st in yardage. This is usually an area where the Raiders lord over the rest of the league like Rod Carew in a 1970s race to a batting title.
Projected through 16 games, the Raiders would 94 penalties for a scant 713 yards at the end of the season.
The Raiders have had 100 penalties or more in each of the last nine seasons, since having only 98 in 1999. They’ve had more than 800 yards in penalties in each of those yards and have marched backward for more than 1,000 yards in every season from 2002 through 2005. (Yes, 2002. Good teams overcome penalites).
If the Raiders were to stay in their current range of penalty yardage, it would be the lowest total since 1990, when they had 97 penalties for only 682 yards.
Their high-water mark for flags since returning to Oakland was 1996 (156 penalties, 1,266 yards _ if only they could find a running back with that kind of production).
In a 38-0 loss to the Jets, the Raiders had only three penalties for 41 yards.
Cable wasn’t about to wear a party hat, given the won-loss record and the fact that all three penalties were costly.
“That is something we are excited about, we are not giving away yards, but it’s just one area and we have to improve in a few areas,” Cable said.
The bad news is the Raiders still know how to get quality out of a penalty even if the quantity is down.
On the opening kickoff, tight end Brandon Myers was called for an illegal block below the waist, pushing the Raiders half-the-distance to the goal and starting at the 10-yard line instead of the 20.
Cable decided not to alter the script of sending four receivers on vertical routes despite being backed up, and the result was a lost fumble by JaMarcus Russell after being hit by Calvin Pace. The Jets eventually scored on a 1-yard run by Thomas Jones.
(Tackle Khalif Barnes was called for tripping on Pace’s sack, but it was declined).
With the Jets leading 14-0 and driving to the Oakland 39-yard line, Mark Sanchez threw incomplete on third down, but the Jets picked up the first down when Stanford Routt was called for defensive holding and an automatic first down. New York eventually scored on an 8-yard run by Shonn Greene.
The final flag came when Richard Seymour gave New York a first down on a third-and-4 play with a personal foul inside the 10-yard line. No reason to pull your hair out over that one _ the Raiders got a break when Jay Feeley missed a short field goal attempt.

Could have fooled me that the penalties are down. Seems like every crucial 3rd down stop we get, has some sort of illegal contact on Routt called.
October 27th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Going back over the lst half of that last debacle, the defense actually played pretty well. Nnamdi didn’t. Michael Huff is quietly becoming a force at FS.
The problem with this team is the constant mistakes. Constant, constant, constant mistakes. Take the beginning of the game. Poor special teams return, a penalty, and the Raiders are already backed up, and the game has barely started. Next play, Barnes gets absolutely blown to bits, causing a fumble AND he commits a penalty. The game is barely seconds old, and there are a myraid of mistakes. This team is not good enough to overcome a myriad of mistakes. The Jets did not make a lot of mistakes. The Jets won.
October 27th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
huff has been very physical this year and its good to see. he had a few hits out there and he had one tackle where he just planted some guys face in the dirt. if only the damn lb’s would get that aggressive.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Or every big offensive play, there’s a hold. Or EVERY ST return, there’s a penalty.
October 27th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Penalties being down is just a symptom of the players not caring and not even trying hard enough to get penalties.
October 27th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
If they lose Sunday and Russell stinks it up again, there might be a chance that they push the 30K level for the KC game. The stadium will be very depressing.

Jerry, Russell’s done nothing to help his cause but it seems like your more butt hurt over his dissing the press.
Its sounding petty.
Gradkowski did nothing signioficant against Jets scrubs on defense.
Granted he’s no Marino, but doesn’t that seem to point to the fact its not all Russell.
You seem to be pi-ssed more at the fact he didn’t talk to the press.

With as much denial as Jamarcus seems to have in regards to himself, makes you wonder how bad is conditioning really was in the offseason for him to actually admit he was “a little heavy”. If Jamarcus was willing to fess up, he was probably HUGE.

What I don’t get is why does it seem like no matter what we do, it always back fires. We r either not training enough, not prepared enough, or not caring enough. All of which are unacceptable for any type of profesional team. Specially a sports one.

Exactly … and the team put it behind him and the Jets came out to play.
You guys can make all the excuses you want for JaMarcus … bottom line he does NOTHING to show he wants to succeed in the NFL.
1. Comes training camp out of shape
2. Cable basically calls him out before pre-season
3. Garcia asks to be released because of JR
4. JaMarcus throws his WRs under the bus
5. Ex LSU teammates call him out
I could go on and on but whats the point … JR could throw 20 INTs and one TD … and the JR lovers would praise him for than one TD throw.
Face it … if Leaf was a bust so will JaMarcus just check out their stats …
Leaf
… Games 24 … Comp 48.4% … 3,666 Yds … 14 TDs … 36 Ints … 12 Fumbles.
JaMarcus
… Games 26 … Comp 51.9% … 3,687 Yds … 17 TDs … 20 Ints … 14 Fumbles

October 27th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Raideralex99,
Either the JR lovers will still praise him or the Davis basher’s will blame Davis solely and absolve Russell of any blame.
The team has plenty of problems, starting with Al Davis, but with either Bruce or Frye, we probably would have lost 17-3, 24-6 or something like that, but it would have been a helluva lot more entertaining than 38-0. Just shows how little confidence and faith the rest of the team has in him, and he doesn’t seem to care less about it.
I think the reason Cable went to the papers with his attack on Russell, is he had to, to save face with the other 52 players. They are sick of his act, and the coach had to call him on it. So either he turns around his act and attitude, even more so than his performance, or they are going to have to move on. Teammates won’t sell out for him, especially under this coach-ownership crap platter we have going on.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
This team has no prayer until Al Davis dies. Simple as that.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Nah dont need either. Just venting while I wait for the 7th crappy raider season to end, the coach to get fired, our draft to suck when we dont draft any o-line or d-line men lol

October 27th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
I disagree Oak, Leaf and Russell have a one big thing in common.
They each were the worst starting QB in the league in a year they played. Stats are stats, not many have ever been this bad except…..well Ryan Leaf.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
It’s not a question of how many penalties are called, but when they are called, and by whom. ie THE TUCK RULE
Perhaps when Al is gone, the league office will get over their grudge and start calling the plays fairly.

Just saw that Dez Bryant is suspended for the rest of this season. The fact is he’s going to be a stud in the NFL and will be much better than any of the WRs drafted this past season.
This is another reason the DHB pick drives me crazy. All leading up to the 2009 draft I was saying trade down, pick Maualuga and Loadholt. Or, take Maualuga at No. 7 and hope Loadholt falls to you in Round 2.
Well, both guys lasted till Round 2.
Loadholt is the starting RT since Game 1 on a 6-1 team that is 3rd in the league in points per game.
Maualuga is the starting strong side OLB since Game 1 on a 5-2 team that is 9th in points per game allowed and has gone from dreadful to taking down Chicago, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Green Bay and is one fluke play away from dealing the Broncos what would be their only loss of the season.
Would’ve been nice to land fixtures in a mammoth RT and bonecrushing LB in this past draft and go out and get a guy like Bryant this year who is going to be the next T.O. or Andre Johnson. Instead we got a guy who isn’t even going to be the next James Jett and who knows what else down the line.

Chris I was on record before the draft saying Cushing will be a better pro backer than Maualuga. I still think that. As bad as our offense is, we couldn’t afford to draft defense and trading down was an iffy proposition. Eugene Monroe would have been a good choice at #7.

If I said to the nation we could have Andy Reids Philly offense here, what would all of you say??? Probably most of you would want that offense here. As for Davis and Cable installing a new offense for Russell, that is correct, he has not done well with it. You have to ask what are the reasons? Losing his best receiving option, starting two rookies, poor line play, dismal running from Dmac and Bush, and certainly a poor dedication to the craft from Russell himself have all combined to put us in the mess we are in right now.

Cut the dosage!
Monroe’s a LEFT tackle.
Probably wouldn’t have helped us right away anyway.
I agree we need linemen, obviously, but the ZBS isn’t a great fit for Monroe is it? and the system allows the acquisistion and application of smaller more agile guys who cost LESS.
Unless you scrap the system, there shouldn’t be a need to pay 7th over all money to a right tackle.
After last years abysmal wide out production, the pic was obviously going to be a receiver.
Crabtree just played his FIRST GAME. Prima Donna and you don’t know how things will shake out for most NFL careers for THREE YEARS, so lets wait and see on DHB shall we?
October 27th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Remember Eugene Monroe kept Brandon Albert at guard while both were at Virginia. KC moved Albert to tackle and he has done pretty damn good for them there. That shows how good Eugene Monroe really is. He could play left tackle, right tackle, shoot, he could probably play QB.

Mentioned it the other day and Jerry too in his live chat then saw it on Yhho sports, man, theres some crappy football being played this year. Not just in Oakland. Big corporations and self centered greed are finally inevitably decaying the game we once loved.
Used to be knock the guy out. see whos tougher, now its no hitting below the waist or above it, $25000 fines and suspensions.
what a joke.
^^^^^^^^^Now I agree with that! There is alot of bad football being played right now and almost half the teams in the NFL are just terrible and then a small percentage is average and even smaller percentage are average.
The NFL needs to seriously implement a ROOKIE salary cap….especially for the top 15 picks in the 1st round!
October 27th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
So…..why again did we draft a track runner over 1 of the 4 “cadillacs”?
October 27th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
We definitely need help in the trenches next year, but with the way DHB looks and Schilens’ injury history I wouldn’t be opposed to taking Dez Bryant. I know I’m likely to get killed for that on this board with all our other needs, but Bryant is going to be a superstar. Mark my words.
For the record I was fiercely opposed to drafting DHB. However, I must admit that I did advocate taking JaMarcus at No. 1 as well.
That’s it for the draft talk for me. Way too early for that stuff now. But a depressing sign of where we are in this season entering Week 8.
To DHB’s credit he seems like a good kid and hard worker. Maybe he will develop into a great player with some time. Not overly optimistic right now but WRs have been known to typically take 2-3 years to break out.

Sorry Jerry. Guess you missed Louis Murphy’s TD in Week 1 and a bunch of other shady calls (overruling a 3rd and long catch by Murphy in Week 3 when the game was close and then upholding that terrible call on review; penalizing Chris Johnson for an extremely basic celebration of a pick; ignoring a blatant SD block in the back on the biggest gain of their winning TD drive; etc.).
Funny how the shady calls generally happen when these games are close but then when they’re out of hand the calls even out.

The pick and option should have been Monroe, Crabtree or trading down…WE ALL KNEW THAT…but the dumb old man does something completely and utterly stupid and drafts a mid to late 1st round rated WR and pays him all that money for what?? Nothing!
==========================
^^^^^^^Do you realize how bad the Raider O-Line is??
Especially at the RT position? Monroe would have started from Day 1 and probably would have been much better than Green and who are the garbage guys at RT now….Pears? Then Cable doesn’t even give reps to Barnes at RT in training camp…..unreal
Monroe is mobile and agile and would have been just fine at LT or RT. Henderson can play either LT or RT also. Basically Monroe would have added great depth to the line and added some stability. He is 6′3/6′4 and at 305, at an ideal size for the ZBS.
At least CrabDiva could catch the damn ball consistently.
I have no problem with DHB as a person or player but what I had and still have a problem with was REACHING beyond belief and taking him at #7 when if old man Al had such a damn hard on for him….he could have traded down and still got him anywhere between 15-20, added a later round pick and more importantly PAID HIM FAR LESS MONEY!
Stupid and unwise decison making like that is why this once proud and respected franchise is in the freakin GUTTER!
October 27th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
DHB is a decent kid, but he is a REAL project as an NFL reciever. He has a good work ethic, but we need guys that can contribute NOW! And I mean NOW NOW NOW!!! Not 2 years from NOW!

Aside from all the name calling on this blog post, that last game was the greatest disaster in the history of the Raiders, and I don’t know if they will ever pull out of this. God help us, this is going to go on all season. We are doomed.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:03 am
Penalties down DOESN’T mean that the Refs aren’t killing us. Just take a look at a couple of plays (example the bullshi$ “incomplete” touchdown catch on the first game). There have been a few like that which make a HUGE difference.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:31 am
Raiderzmaverick,
correct. The Zebras know how to make the calls against the Raiders at any critical juncture they choose, effectively screwing the team. The Zebras also know how to flag the opposing team for meaningless yardage so that in the end of the game the stats don’t look too out of whack. Kind of like a dealer knowing that both players at the table must receive the same amount of cards for the hand, but also knowing who gets the aces when he needs them.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:54 am
That’s proof the league has it in for the Raiders.
Bad teams are bad because they constantly have players out of position, or are being overwhelmed at the point of attack. Those are the very reasons why player take penalties. Therefore, bad teams take more penalties.
The league is simply statistically averaging out the total number of penalties for appearance sake.
The Raiders are garbage now so why not even up the calls? Save the important calls for when they’re going for the playoffs.
Heck, the refs even won two Superbowls for the Steelers.

***Another post why we are a terrible team************
This team sucks! How can so much talent in college be so terrible? It just does not make since to me. I said it before and I wil say it again. Yes, execution is important but you need to have plays that fits these guys strengths. We just don’t do that consistant enough, we try to force guys to fit the system and it just does not work. Outside of Russel he just needs to put up or shut up. Now DMac, Bush, DHB, Zach Miller, Johnnie Higgins. you can’t tell me all these guys are just out partying so they are not prepared. Why do all our 1st round picks struggle on this team and are labeled busts? I don’t want to hear Nnamdi, Mario Henderson and Robert Gallery are not busts because at one time or another they were labeled busts. I think Nnamdi has been able to do so well is because he knew he was sun to be coached by his team and he went to seek out Rod Woodson, Charles Woodson and Ronnie Lott to get his technique down regardless of the system. Our major issue is unlike the Steelers or New England this team does not know how to develop talent in a winning system. The best players through out the Raiders history were groomed on another team and bought out by Al for a kings ransom. Now we are trying to develop talent with out the formula and that is what is killing this franchise. They waste their money on top talent that they can not develop.

You know its bad when preparing for the SB, Chuckie played qb; aka Gannon and the team were in shock when his qb play came true…

That’s a fair point about some players needing more time to develop than others. Problem is it seems like the only players we draft are height/weight/speed projects who, by the time they’re worth a damn, are 4 or 5 years into the league and need a new contract. How many years do we waste developing these guys who may not pan out or if they do it’s not for 3, 4 or 5 years?
I like upside and I’m not opposed to drafting SOME projects. But we need to start drafting some players who are NFL-ready in a reasonable amount of time.

The Chiefs looked at two veteran defensive tackles Tuesday.
The team worked out Shaun Smith and Terdell Sands. According to a source close to the situation, the Chiefs may not be close to making a decision to bring in a defensive tackle and they were simply doing some bye-week looking.
Smith is a talented, but troubled player who had been shipped out of both Cleveland and Detroit this season. Sands has been cut by Oakland and New England in recent months. Sands was originally a seventh-round draft pick of the Chiefs in 2001.

He is one of the worst QB’s I have ever seen. And with no signs of improvement. How many years has he been here? huh? F- that, he has had enough time to show something. Every aspect of his play is horrible. Everyone knows it, it’s no secret. And don’t blame the team or line or some other strawman. It’s all on him. Any other QB in here would be somewhat productive. He is lazy, shotty attitude, lazy, cant throw for sh-t ( I would have no problems giving him a rifle and standing 10 yards away and ask him to shoot me.) He is a product of this generation, I signed the dotted line, got my bills and now don’t give a f–k, I’ll just show up.

He will have his chance to make an impression next off-season, and if doesn’t make a good one, just cut him. Like it or not Jamarcus, the QB has to be a vocal leader, and one of the hardest-workers on the team. If he is not up to the job description, than find someone who will. Teammates would rather play for an over-achiever than an under-achiever, not matter the talent level.

Reassure him he is redoubling his efforts to make a competitive team.
I like what Cable tried and is trying to do, but its not working. I know a lot of you want the coaching carousel to stop. I say let it stop once we get the right coach.
So that’s first thing.
Second is to offer Seymour a deal. If he balks, franchise him.
Third, In the meantime, sign the nastiest, hungriest FAs available, not neccecarily the best ‘athletes,’ but the best athletic football players.
Fourth, draft intelligently. No skill players. None. Draft order should look something like DT, RT, MLB, SSLB, C, RG, DE, or basically like the last 5 drafts should have been.
Seymour sees legitimate progress (or legitimate dollars), maybe he’s convinced to stay.
Not sure of the NFL schedule of events, so I doubt you can get all of that accomplished before he tries to walk or sit, but I think step 1 would be critical.
Overtures need to be made to Cowher, Holmgrenn, Shanahan (yes, I said it), Shottenheimer (yup), and Gruden (that’s right).
Shanny and Shotty would be interesting because they hate the Raiders and Al Davis, which I think makes them perfect candidates to rebuild the team.
Any of these coaches would need creative control, or at least a great deal of it.
An offensive coordinator would be nice. I’d let Marshall stay as long as he’s allowed to run his defense.
That being said, get ready for Al debuting the youngest NFL Head Coach to date, 25 year Old CIF Coach of the Year Wayne Mifflin and defensive coordinator Al Davis.
Wayne and Al will draft three defensive backs, two wide receivers, and a tight end (to be converted to defensive end).

LA to the Bay,
I’m with you with on 99% of it, except the don’t draft any skill players line.
We need a QB and a RB. Maybe not our 1st rounder, but we must address those two positions. A real NFL everydown RB would do wonder’s to this offense, especially one who does not have to come off the field.
Our QB-RB combo is one of the worst in the NFL, except maybe for Cleveland and Tampa. I don’t get the whole “draft only linemen” talk.
You know who has used the least amount of 1st or 2nd round draft picks on O-lineman the last 10 years, and has drafted the most WR’s in the first two rounds those same 10 years? The Pittsburgh Steelers.
We need a QB, RB, and a MLB more than we need a RT (who you don’t draft until later rounds anyway) or DT. I think Center might be our weakest line spot, and a 3rd rounder would probably be a huge upgrade.
