Another streak on the line

Beating the Chargers seems unlikely, given on response of the oddsmakers who have made the some 16-point favorites last time I looked (they’re pretty good at their job) and the Raiders’ own play of late.

But it seemed unlikely the Raiders would beat Kansas City two years ago, given their nine-game losing streak to the Chiefs and a staggering 19 game run of defeats in the AFC West. Both of those streaks came to an end when the Raiders prevailed 20-17.

In Week 4 of that season, on Sept. 30, Oakland beat up the Miami Dolphins 35-17, rushing for 299 yards, ending a 12-game losing streak on the road.

For what it’s worth, Justin Fargas helped put away both of those games with big second halves, gaining 139 yards on 22 carries against the Chiefs and 179 yards on 22 carries against the Dolphins.

A big by game Fargas (or Michael Bush, or both) would seem mandatory if the Raiders are to end their one remaining streak. The San Diego Chargers own a 12-game winning streak over the Raiders, with Oakland last winning 34-31 on Sept. 28, 2003.

A few other facts regarding the series and the streak before I had off for a the better part of the day to a fall baseball tournament:

– The Chargers have scored at least 21 points in all 12 games. The Raiders have never scored more than 20. They lost 24-20 in Week 1 this season.

– The Chargers have won by an average of 15.0 points (they are plus-180 in the 12 games). The average score is 28.25-13.25.

– The Chargers won by more than seven points nine of 12 times.

– The Raiders held a 54-31-2 advantage in the first 87 games of the series.

– San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson is 39 yards shy of gaining 2,000 career yards against the Raiders going into his 18th game. The Raiders won four of the first five against San Diego when Tomlinson arrived.

Last time a 17 point dog won outright in the NFL was 1995, when the Redskins beat the Cowboys.

The Raiders also sandwiched a victory between 2 37+ point losses, last time that happened was 1992 (Atlanta Falcons).

Just read those little tid-bits that I thought were interesting.

How come Fargas can have 2 halves like that in a couple of weeks, and Darren will have only 1 after two years?

Darren pisses me off more than Russell. At least once in a blue moon, we see the immense talent in Russell. Never seen it from Darren, his greatest run he got caught from behind by a LB, fumbled and got hurt. He never seems THAT fast, and I can’t remember one play that sticks out and says that is why he was the #4 pick. How can one of the great runners in SEC history seem so average in the NFL?

    Priesttj,

I am very frustrated. I didn’t have any illusions of this team winning 10 games and going to the playoffs.

All I want is effort and competition. Its been 7 yrs since this team has even bothered to compete on a regular basis.

I get the youth movement and all that. But this team gets blown out way too many times. That’s a lack of focus, professionalism and just plain competence.

    Its unacceptable

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Given all that. I don’t even care if they win or lose tomorrow. I just want a competitive game. If they can repeat the MNF game…I will be more than happy with that.

Show me that the team is progressing. Show me that they are getting better at something other than the Punter position.

That’s all! I don’t care about wins and losses. Just compete and stop embarrassing themselves every freekn week

I think JLH is done, he got drilled and has never recovered fully from it.

It happens in a lot of physical sports, football, boxing even Nascar (after a crash).

He has lost his edge, and was dropping passes all pre-season any ways. You can see it on his PR, he is looking for the sidelines and is not going up the field. He is running scared out there.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Vegas Raider,

McFadden has no excuses. Running backs are supposed to succeed regardless. Adrian Peterson is a real running back…those guys in Carolina are real running backs. They face 8 and 9 man fronts…they’ve been in offenses with no passing threat….Chris Johnson is a real running back to.

McFadden is another overhyped SEC bust

We should have taken any of the 3 USC LB’s in last year’s draft. Cushing should win defensive ROY and is in the top 10 in tackles, and Matthews has won rookie of the week and has scored a TD. Rey might be the worst of the 3.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Vegas Raider,

I think JLH on the bench is more of that Tom Cable B.S of picking his favorites over talent.

JLH has been playing football his entire life. He hasn’t lost his edge.

Davis and Cable are force feeding the offense a full helping of Darius Heyward-Bey

    Vegas Raider,

The owner is not as smart as people claim he is.

He hasn’t really done a good job in over 20yrs.

MOst of his picks are ridiculous and he has no concept of what a team really is.

No way he drafts a linebacker high. He thinks that any front 7 or offensive line position is a plug n play position. Look at all the undrafted free agents and late round picks that play in the front 7 / o-line.

Meanwhile, the secondary and skill positions are full of high round busts!

Players lose there edge from time to time, it’s what happens in professional sports all the time, for one reason or another. He needs to have a big-gainer to gain his confidence back, but until than, he is very timid, and it is plain as day to see.

    SnB,

The only skill position I would be OK with drafting in the first 3 rounds would be a RB. They need O-line and LB help, and 4th and 5th rounders isn’t going to cut it.

Chris Johnson this week will face 8 or 9 in the box with VY at QB and will probably have a better game than Darren will all year.

It comes down to breaking tackles in the NFL, you see Peterson truck that DB in Pitt last week? Deangelo Williams breaking 4 or 5 tackles for his 20 yard TD run last week. At some point in time as a NFL RB, you have to know that everybody knows you are getting the ball, yet they can’t tackle you. Darren just gives up, slips or fall’s down, and NEVER breaks tackles.

McCoy same along with another Junior the Notre Dam QB, Snead a bum this year, Tim Tebow maybe a wildcat player not an Nfl QB.
Best hope Mcnabb sucks this year, gets cut and AL signs him or else we end up with maybe Anderson, Vick, Brady Quin, u guys name it. Without a good QB we will never win.

At least JLH has demonstrated an edge. One of the few NFL receivers to have a moment of synergy with this QB of ours.

DHB has done jackshUU>..Todd Watkins is not even an NFL talent. and Murphy would be ok if there was a stud starting opposite him.

JLH not playing is ridiculous and shows that the coaches/owner have no clue.

Why would you move Tyvon Branch at all? The guy is the best safety the Raiders have had since Rod Woodson.

You finally have a football player that is developing the right way. Not unlike all the other busts that litter this roster.

Mike Mitchell? Let him play free safety. Just like Raiders4eve said about the YouTube reference.

I am not risking the development of a young player that is actually getting the job done for another highlight reel physical specimen.

Again, play him at free safety if you think he can play.

Branch is arguably the 2nd best defender on the team (Asomugha #1)

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Raiders4eve,

The Raiders organization, coaching is not good enough to develop players at any position let alone QB.

The Raiders don’t have the stability, patience and intelligence to properly develop a QB.

I would be AGAINST this team ever drafting a QB again.

They are better served going the retread route and hoping they get lucky. I would seriously target the following QB that need a fresh start:

    1. Mark Bulger
    2. Rex Grossman
    3. Michael Vick
    4. Jason Campbell
    5. JP Losman

I would also take out a flier on Josh Johnson in Tampa Bay and would invite back Andrew Walter

I agree with post 31. But I wouldn’t say Branch is the second best, Seymour, Elllis are way better and being in the professionalism needed for Branch to succeed. Branch is improving but he still not one of the best but he is improving alot. I would like to see ints or forced fumbles, knock out Wrs head, basically a guy that creates fear for opposing team like Adrian Wilson and Troy Polumola does. Hopefully he gains some weight cause for sole reason he looks like FS.

For those blaming the DTs watch the film most rans are on the right side, knowing Alston is a bum n Morrison will get man handled by a TE, do u think Patrick Wilis gets manhandled by TE?

Losman is playing in a league where there is absolute no blitz and a QB is allowed to intentionally ground the ball, he looks good but who wouldn’t if there is no blitz. Grossman really had a chance more than JR remember what was his problem ints and injury prone. I like Campbell and Bulger, I think Vick needs more than this year to comeback to his form, he lost major steps, I still Mcnabb can be our Gannon at his age and accomplishment, but we need to fix this horrible line, RT, RG, C and depth in LG and LT. Hopefully, Al is willing to open his paycheck next year on this area, no stupid Barnes for a mill or kwame Harris even though I still think Harris can transform his career just like Gallery if he moves to RG. We need a big atheltic center wish we drafted Alex Mack or trade for him, they can have JR lol.

Totally agree. Drafting project players that need expert coaching.

But the Owner can’t recruit good coaches because the Owner insists on setting the scheme, strategy and starting lineup. In addition, the Owner wouldn’t allow a good coach the authority to instill the discipline and lockerroom environment necessary.

So Al Davis needs to bring in veteran players that don’t need the leadership and hopes he gets lucky.

The root cause is Al davis. The worst owner in pro-sports.

I am just trying to find a way that this team could at least be competitive on Sundays. I know that winning seasons are out of reach as long as Davis runs things the way he currently does.

I also know that wins are hard to come by. I don’t expect this team to win any more. Won’t get my hopes up like that. But I do like the Raiders and enjoy watching them. All I am asking is that they are competitive. That’s all….talk about lowered expectations
