Cable on chopping block? Probably not
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, November 1st, 2009 at 9:26 am in Oakland Raiders.
There is speculation that Tom Cable’s job could be in danger should the Raiders suffer another blowout loss Sunday to the San Diego Chargers.
That’s all it is at this point _ speculation. A lot of it by fans, a few off-hand references in the media.
It seems reasonable enough. The Raiders are coming up on their bye week. Al Davis fired his coach, Lane Kiffin, last season at the bye week. The bye week presents an opportunity for the interim coach to at least begin to get up to speed for the Raiders’ post-bye game Nov. 15 at the Coliseum against Kansas City.
Cable is 6-13 as a head coach, slightly better than Kiffin’s 5-15, and his losses have been much more one-sided _ nine of them by three touchdowns or more.
The heat is off Cable in terms of prosecution for the assault alleged by Randy Hanson, although an NFL sanction (more likely a fine than suspension) is still a possibility. Now comes an ESPN Outside the LInes report aired Sunday morning which says Cable has a history of violence toward women.
Cable issued statements through the Associated Press conceding he struck his first wife “with an open hand” in 1989 and has regretted it ever since and challenged ESPN for never contacting him initially for comment.
I’ve heard Davis is unhappy with the whole Hanson affair, given that he gave Cable his big chance to be an NFL coach and then the organization had to deal with an unwanted distraction.
Never mind the fact that Davis is the one responsible for putting Hanson in the mix in the first place, and that other distractions over the years have also been a great deal of his own making. It’s doubtful he sees it that way. No telling what he thinks of this latest run of bad publicity. Coupled with another face-plant today, Davis could conceivably use it as “cause” for firing another coach.
That said, I don’t see Cable being an in-season casualty. There is some sentiment within the building that he’s been the best coach at dealing with the boss since Jon Gruden, although his team’s on-field performance has never approached what Gruden delivered.
Whatever disagreements Cable has had with Davis, or problems with personnel, he’s never leaked them to the media. He’s held firm to the philosophies of the owner on offense and defense, which he says he agrees with due to his lifelong love for the franchise.
Kiffin antagonized Davis at every turn, hoping to get fired. Cable espouses traditions, rivalries and the kind of history which plays well upstairs. He made his most risky move against the Jets, benching JaMarcus Russell and taking a subtle but evident hard line regarding his inadequacies in the loss. It’s a tightrope, to be sure, because Cable’s job is tied to Russell’s progress and no one believes Bruce Gradkowski or Charlie Frye could step in and suddenly deliver victories.
Still, unless Cable takes a “him or me’ stance with Russell, and continues to try and build a team around him, he’s not going anywhere this season.
That doesn’t mean Cable has a free pass by any means. Only that he’s probably going to last the season. He could end up a dead man walking, much like the final weeks of the reigns of Bill Callahan, Art Shell and Norv Turner.
One thing’s for sure. Cable could really use a repeat of the kind of electricity the Raiders had on opening night against San Diego, this time followed by a win. And he needs to bag a few more wins along the way. Beating fellow lightweights such as the Chiefs, Redskins and Browns would be mandatory, coupled with a couple of unexpected victories along the way such as a high-profile Thanksgiving Day game against the Cowboys.
There’s also potential upsets against teams such as Pittsburgh, Denver and Baltimore.
Tall orders to be sure. After the Jets game, frankly, it looks next to impossible.
Cable got his chance in large measure because of two wins to close the season against Houston and Tampa Bay, and I’ll be the first to admit I thought winning those games earned him a shot at the job.
Davis apparently thought so as well, but closing with a rush over the last two games won’t count for nearly as much this time around if it is preceded by a few more lackluster one-sided losses.

Nnamdi21, that’s my premise, we are going into the year for the first time in 4 years with a confident offense. As much flack as Russell get he was playing good football late last year. The WR’s wereplaying good football. The running game was showing the all important dpth we knew they had.
There just is no way we struglle as bad as we did last year.

Jhill,
I havent seen the NFLN bit on Oakland so I cant comment on it, ok ?
As far as you having something in common with those 2 tits. If the shoe fits..
Jhill, we are all avid fans or we wouldn’t be in here. However being an “avid” fan doesn’t mean you talk down to people and lecture them as if you are an authority on Raider football…..ESPECIALLY when they are dead wrong far more that right.

Automatic clock adjustments?
Damn, I need to upgrade!
November 1st, 2009 at 9:36 am
OK Mista,
So the fact that those 4 guys who are getting paid for their opinion said the EXACT same thing I’ve been saying since day 1 tells you what?
And how the heck do you put me in the same boat with Priest? That guy is BY FAR the Raiders most avid fan. Nothing is EVER wrong with this team, let him tell it.
And Oakglenn? Another avid fan right behind priest.
Other than the fact that they can run circles around you talking FOOTBALL, I’m not quiet sure what the 3 of us have in common, lol!

Sheesh!

This is our Super Bowl. We can beat these fools. Merriman is nothing without his roids. LT is useless. They’ve got injuries on both lines. All we need to win is one thing…JaMarcASS needs to hold onto the damn ball!
November 1st, 2009 at 9:40 am
Jhill,
I will say this to your credit..
We can disagree and its all in fun, you dont call me names like a 15yr old JUST because we disagree so for that I’m going to cancel your sweater and will not lump you together with those 2 tits OakGlenda & Priest.

My IPOD docking station that doubles as an alarm clock does not automatically adjust.
Neither does the frickin coffee pot, clock on the stove, and all the other annoying crap I have to adjust.
WTF is the point of this shyt anyway?!?!? I thought we were going to do away with the daylight savings crap in Cali!

I have to admit it was pretty silly for NFL Network to have the Raider piece on so early. Unless they were targeting the East coast Raider fans, or maybe the fans who might be up early headed to SD. Other than that, not quite sure how many people on the West coast they expected to see it.

I don’t get this whole talking down to someone business. If someone is dead wrong about something, how can they be talking down to anyone? Just keep pointing out to them how they are wrong, and you will soon see them start to get off topic with non football stuff. The minute they stop talking football, you win! It’s not that hard.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:01 am
The Cable stuff is unfortunate. But, that’s a private matter that is between him, the women and the police, who were called in those incidents.
My problem with Cable is his awful coaching and playcalling. He has been an absolute disaster in this area. The team’s up and down play also fall on his shoulders.
I don’t know if this Raider team will win another game this year. I hope they do….I really do.
My goal is not wins and losses with this sad team.
I just want to see them compete. I want to see the offense look professional in its playcalling, execution. How about a complete scoring drive.
I really have lost the hope that the Raiders will ever be competitive until there is a change in the approach by the owner.
Oh well!

They aren’t going to waste prime-time space on a team that barely even tries to play on a week to week basis.
A team where the problems are so entrenched with an incompetent and stubborn owner who refuses to change.
Why would you waste any prime-time space with this lot?
November 1st, 2009 at 10:10 am
Jhill: It was ESPN, not NFL Network.
I’m wondering if this story was quietly leaked/pushed by Al as the first step of firing Cable (with cause?)!
November 1st, 2009 at 10:13 am
You know SnB,
I look at little things like the entire Denver team showing up in a suit and tie. That means there is a dress code. Little stuff like that matters!
Russell can show up to something representing the Raiders wearing a White fuggin mink coat because it’s ok with the management.
Russell can show up for the first time in 3 years at 6 am because it’s ok with management.
The Raiders can have 8-4 work hours instead of 6-6 because it’s ok with management.
The sad thing about the piece on NFL Network this morning is that all 4 of the guys were NOT trying to be funny. You could see the disgust and almost gut wrenching pain these guys had on there faces just talking about what’s going on in Oakland. Marriucci and Faulk especially. Where is the organazational leadership they were asking? Mooch was begging for help for Russell from a leadership standpoint and a supporting cast.
If I didn’t know any better by the disgust on their face, Faulk is ready to take over the front office, Mooch is ready to coach the team, Sapp wants to be the D Coordinator, and Irvin wants to take DHB somewhere and beat the fugg outta him.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:14 am
Pretty much what I saw, Mista.
Except they didn’t even bother talking about the game. It was all about the entire team and organization.
The one thing they all agreed on that (that I was giving you shyt about) was that not one of them think Russell is a bust. The jury is still out they said. How can you tell when he’s surrounded by ZERO supporting cast. Mooch laughed at the Flacco and Ryan comparisons. He said, are you really going to sit here and tell me that Jamarcus Russell has the same supporting cast that Flacco and Ryan had. He literally laughed at that. The Oline is a disaster, the WRs are a disaster, and McFadden, the other #1 pick can’t stay on the field.
Put some talent around the guy and leadership around a guy that has only 1 year of experience and then see what he can do. THEIR words, not mine.

AL is going to fire Tom (my pimp hand is strong) Cable its just a matter of time. Cable somehow is an embarrassment to even this organization.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:24 am
Cable may or may not be a bad play caller. The problem is he is stuck with probably the most unintelligent QB in the league. How do you call plays when your QB only knows a quarter of the playbook, can’t read a defense or call audibles, and has no idea when a blitz is coming?
November 1st, 2009 at 10:27 am
Colorado thats what I’ve been saying since week 2. How to judge the guy he is handicapped with JaMeatloaf.
Thats why Cable should have gone public and benched Russell before week 1 and sighted him being over weight, late to meetings, etc. But Tom is afraid of AL so he’s going to take the sword!
FK him.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:30 am
Maybe Jamarcus doesn’t know the playbook (if that’s even true) because he’s only REQUIRED to work part time.
Up until last week, Russell wan’t REQUIRED to do anything. For all we know, he STILL isn’t REQUIRED to do anything, and he just finally grew up and is taking his job seriously.
My issue with that is where is the MANAGER who allows the TEAM LEADER to half ass it around the workplace?
I mean, translate that to your work environment.
Pres
VP
Manager
Supervisor
Team Leader
Scrub guys
Since when are Team Leaders allowed to draft and implement policies and procedures?
When the drive-thru is backed up at your local McDonald’s or it’s taking you too long to get some fires, do you complain to the guy taking your order?

dude JR is a bust for many reasons, work ethic, leadership, respect, motivation, and the money he received, he lacks all the above. I don’t care about the talent around him, he doesn’t have the swagger to be the leader of this team n as first overall pick u gotta have that kind swagger. M Vick had that swagger, he didn’t have work ethic but he had the “it” factor which JR is missing. JR is a bust Imo.

Forget about those fools on NFL Network. They love to bash the Raiders but never actually watch the games. They think when JaCrapAss fires a slant 5 ft behind the receiver that it’s a drop and not his fault. DHB caught the ball just fine from Baldkowski cuz it was on target. They also don’t see that the receivers have to run the same two routes because our QB can’t remember any more.

True about NFLN. No where near as bad as ESPN though. Too bad were not any good or we could shut them up.

By the way, I agree with most of that, 4eve. I think I disagree with the swagger part of it. JRuss certainly thinks he is a damn good QB, and not the problem.
The ONE thing I give him credit for is NOT pulling a Chrissy Everett like Walter did once he started getting hit.
If Russell EVER “gets it” and WORKS on his game, then who knows what this guy can do. 12 hour days, 1st one to arrive and the last one to leave type of thing. True, we may NEVER see it hear because it’s not what is REQUIRED of him in Oakland.
And it’s NOT just about Russell. Look at Huff. FINALLY breaking out because he decided to start watching film this offseason?
CMON!
FINALLY stared watching film this offseason??????
I just don’t understand why this stuff is NOT REQUIRED!

November 1st, 2009 at 10:47 am
Yeah Colorado …
That’s a big problem man, and not just for #2. The league really needs to look at giving all this $ to guys who have never played the game. There are SOOOOOO many examples around the NFL of guys getting $ who don’t deserve it. Alex Smith, Carr, Lienart, VY, Gholston, Long, DHB, McFadden, etc. The list is endless.
Maybe they address it this offseason, and adopt something similar to the NBA for rookies.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:50 am

Geez..why is it the weakest of the weak always run the “Feel sorry for JR”? He’s a grown freaking man. He’s in the NFL. Saying “NO ONE TOLD HIM TO WORK HARD” means the author of that idiot take abuses the god given right to be a moron.
Amazing.
BOTH CABLE AND KIFFIN MADE IT VERY CLEAR ON WHAT FATASS HAD TO DO. Both stated CLEARLY he wasn’t putting in the time. WHAT PART OF THAT CONFUSED YOUR IGNORANT ASS, JHILL? lol…(BTW..you and I BOTH know you’re best served to keep that tail between your legs, less I school your ignorant ass, yet again)
Over and over both coaches told BlubberButt he needs to PUT IN THE EXTRA TIME.
That’s not rocket science. Both even detailed COMING IN AND SPENDING THE TIME studying, both the playbook, and defenses.
Of course, NEITHER one of them actually went out to JR’s house, and picked him up, bought him breakfast, and made sure he was comfy in front of the screen.
Only weak ass Raider fans run the “It’s not the players fault they don’t work hard or want to excel, IT’S THE COACHES FAULT.”
Here’s a news flash. EVERY PLAYER (correction: ALMOST every NFL player) knows that he needs to stay in top shape in the offseason. Knows to come into camp sharp, and ready to perform..LONG BEFORE THEY SEE A COACH. What qb IN THE LEAGUE, BESIDES RUSSELL, not only showed up out of shape, and fat, but ADMITTED THEY DID?
Only one. That’s on HIS FATASS, NOT THE COACHES. The fact he still is a fatass? Means he has zero desire. You can’t teach desire. Either you have it or you don’t.
Russell will NEVER be even a decent NFL qb…EVER.
He has no desire to be one..period.

CHARGERS (-16.5) over Raiders
We’ve seen great come-from-behind teams before, with the early-90s Bills being my favorite. Well, what would you call the 2009 Raiders? A great fall-from-behind team? When they fall behind by 10, the NFL might as well invoke the Little League’s mercy rule. They can turn a 10-point deficit into 24 while you’re taking a pee break. Remarkable

Al Davis needs to step aside. He needs to give control to his son and trust that some other GM will make his team good and take it to a super bowl before his time expires in this life.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Terrapin I disagree.
I was told in here last year by a “expert” on blogging that Kiffin was holdng Russell back nd needed to “let this kid play”. So Cable lets the “kid” loose and its a complete disaster. This “kid” in his 3rd year and cant get a grip on 100% of his playbook, he has ZERO pocket presence, he has NO leadership qualities what so ever, he is over weight, he is lazy and doesnt study film like he should…
Geeez Terrapin, thi on Cable huh?
What size sweater do you wear Terapin ?
November 1st, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Just scanned the comments above:
1. Its way too early to be calling JR a bust.
2. The Oline is a mess which is contributing mightily to JRs turnovers (fumbles) and misses (can’t step into the throw). Watch the film and you constantly see defenders in the backfield.
3. The QB troubles is not only coming from himself but they are overwhelmingly coming from the Oline and the deep pass plays being called.
Deep patterns are by their nature less successful – low percentage of completion. Calling these deep patterns all day, all things being equal, your QB will have a very low completion percentage.
Shorten the game more and the QB will have more success and the Online may, may have more success.
This is all on Cable to notice and make it work.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Since Cable’s such a violent loose-cannon, maybe he’ll put his fist through the old man’s skull when he gets fired.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:05 pm
That’s pretty much the formula for the team’s success right now! Run the ball, shorten the passing attack with screens/dump offs etc, and throw deep less. The offense will stay on the field longer, the defense less and they’ll be in more games with a chance to win (if not running away with it).
I posted 1 time and all of a sudden i’m posting too fast. What a crock
November 1st, 2009 at 1:10 pm
i agree with u terrapin on what the offense needs to do question is will big al let them just like the dfnse r they gonna play the stupid man to man all over because thats what al wants or we gonna play the type of d that was used against the eagles its sad that r wins and losses r determined before the kick off starts
November 1st, 2009 at 1:10 pm
What size sweater do you wear…u know just in case ?
—————————————————–
lol!
Ok, my bad!
But cmon! Gore breaking a 64 yd run isnt exactly Smith moving the team downfield, lol. And at least they have what EVERYONE concedes is an actual WR.
Smith isn’t the guy EITHER. We’ll see Hill again as soon as Smith pisses off Singletary.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:12 pm
OK, I’m still buzzed from last night, brownies are in the oven and I just hope to God I don’t have to hurt anybody because my freakin team, the Raiders, lose by more than 17 1/2 points. God help me I took the points.
Good luck to us all.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:14 pm
And they need to reset the clock on this site. unless I got jacked to Denver last night. But it don’t smell like a sewer….
November 1st, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Jhill,
A Smith puts the ball where his man can catch it. Its not over their head, or behind, in the dirt. Is every throw perfect no but he is fairly accurate and SF has a VERY avg line especially with Staley and 1 other starter out.
S Hill wont see the field unless Smith gets hurt.

November 1st, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Just scanned the comments above:
1. Its way too early to be calling JR a bust.
RICHOCHET: And yet, everyone is. Gosh..I wonder why? Maybe because HE’S THE ABSOLUTE WORST QB IN THE LEAGUE, FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW? I don’t know..seems to make sense to me. OH..I GET IT. The “I hate to admit I’m wrong” reply. Got it. Well hell, try this on “It’s not JR’s fault, it’s the coaches”. That’s the angle the spineless worms take..try it on for size.
####################################
2. The Oline is a mess which is contributing mightily to JRs turnovers (fumbles) and misses (can’t step into the throw). Watch the film and you constantly see defenders in the backfield.
RICHOCHET: Wow. I guess, according to your analogy, those D linemen contribute mightily to runners being tackled? There is always pressure on qb’s..it’s THE QB’S JOB TO PROTECT THE BALL and be aware of pressure. JR is only aware of Rib night at the local buffet.
######################################
3. The QB troubles is not only coming from himself but they are overwhelmingly coming from the Oline and the deep pass plays being called.
RICHOCHET: Translation: “Other worms here run the “blame everyone else” weakass crap, so I might as well do the same”. LIKE IT OR NOT, WHEN A RECEIVER IS OPEN, AND A QB WITH NO IMMEDIATE PRESSURE BADLY MISSES HIM, that’s on the qb. That’s happened all year long. OH..and sacks? fumbles? Those don’t affect JR’s LEAGUE WORST QB RATING.
##############################
Deep patterns are by their nature less successful – low percentage of completion. Calling these deep patterns all day, all things being equal, your QB will have a very low completion percentage.
Shorten the game more and the QB will have more success and the Online may, may have more success.
This is all on Cable to notice and make it work.
RICHOCHET: lol..oh geez..if the receiver IS OPEN, YOU THROW IT..if not, you check down. This isn’t rocket science..and it’s not even 2nd grade science, which everyone is well aware would still confuse JR.
The majority of JR’s tosses are NOT deep balls, so quit with the whine. Hell, he misses guys wide open, right in front of him..oh…that must be the water boys fault, right?
November 1st, 2009 at 1:22 pm
I can understand the Al haters, the JR haters, the Cable haters, I even understand the people who say Twinkletoes is a bust but I dont understand the hate for DHB.
I cant say for sure he will be successful but he is not fragile. He has started every game. That counts for a lot in my book. He is just getting used to the NFL. I am looking forward to him becoming a pro bowl WR in the future.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:23 pm
I am pissed at that crackhead Irvin
November 1st, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Mistabrown, No. But I could give him a run for the $ this morning.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Cable got his chance in large measure because of two wins to close the season against Houston and Tampa Bay, and I’ll be the first to admit I thought winning those games earned him a shot at the job.
————————————————————————————————————–
Yeah Jerry,
you, Hanson, and 90% of this blog.
Cable is a dead man walking.
Now, about our next coach. Jon Gruden should be the pick along with bringing Allen with him in a package deal. When Gruden inherited Dungy’s Bucs he won it all and got worse every year.
With us he started at the bottom and got better every year. He’ll be starting from the bottom again so I like the idea of a return to Oakland for Gruden.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Jhill if we played the 49ers 5 games I bet Smith beats JaMeatloaf straight up 5/5 times. What do you think?
Plunk I agree on Irvin he is a sh!tburger.

No..
November 1st, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Relax Mista,
I was strictly talking about the stat line of 6/12, 72 yds, 1 INT qualifying as 10 times better than our QB.
Right now, of course I’d take Smith over Russell and Gradkowski. Who wouldn’t?
November 1st, 2009 at 1:38 pm
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
November 1st, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Chuckie got worse every year because he was given a say in personnel.look at the mess he left TB in.look at what happened to us after he left.he might be a decent coach but don’t give him any say in the roster make-up.but that is all moot since he won’t be coming back.

93% of Mistabrown’s posts contain a comment about Oakglenn or BHP.
Someone needs to take a long look in the mirror. Nice life or maybe it’s love?
Either way, dude needs help, his obsession signifies a touch of mental illness if not more.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:44 pm
When you look at Al Davis, and his a career as a whole no one can argue that he is one of the great men of football. He’s been instrumental in the shaping of what the NFL is today.
However it seems Al Davis has fallen victim to the classic problem with the greats, staying too long and tarnishing their legacy.
Al Davis is just like Jordan with the Washington Wizards.
But I wonder does Al have anyone that will pull him back, sit him down and help him see, that he is one of the greatest football minds of all time, but that time has passed.
Regardless of the rest of the players in this on going soap opera, Al is the man, and it’s been his decisions and directions that have led us here. Yes you can recover from some of the mistakes, and yes he has also made some great moves, but right now the Raiders are seriously hamstrung by some key personnel mistakes, and sooner or later Al needs to let go.
Even Stienbrenner has Cashman. It makes me wonder if Al thought Kiffin was going to be his Brian Cashman, or Theo Epstein?
The Raiders need to heal, need to recover from some significant blunders. Al it’s time to bring in a hired gun and let that person run with it. The Raiders will always be Al Davis’s Raiders, but this team needs more than you and a O-Line coach can bring to the table.

I am neither one of your lovers, just making an observation about how EVERY TIME I read posts here, there you are OBSESSING about Oakglenn, even when he is clearly not here.
You need to check yourself bro, your little school girl crush is becoming more than that. Seek help before it is too late.
Pretty convenient for you to accuse me of being the source of dimentia, but you couldn’t be more wrong.
I happen to agree with you that Oakglenn is a fairy (see my previous posts for proof) but I choose to maybe mention once or twice. Not EVERY DAY FOR OVER A YEAR!
Am I wrong? Nope, the answers are littered in EVERY SINGLE BLOG THAT IS EVER POSTED HERE!

i said it and i still believe he was doing what they were asking in that game, but,no,he has been disappointing.i thought he’d be much better than he has been, but you really can’t judge the guy because of the QB he has been playing with.you also can’t call him a bust after 7 games when everyone knew he was more of a project than a ‘ready’ WR.and he has been getting open,it isn’t his fault he hasn’t been getting many thrown his way.also,ALL WRs drop balls, especially young ones who are pressing.

2010 FA QB’s – Not much there
Jake Delhomme, Jason Campbell, Josh McCown, Jon Kitna, Tarvaris Jackson, Brodie Croyle, Kellen Clemmens

I fn hate al davis, hate jamarcus , and am not to fond of dhb. It pains me to watch crabtree and then turn on the tv to see dhb.smh al has ruined this team to the point of no return. Yhe raiders could have had megatron and joe flacco but we’re stuck with jamarcus and heyward bey. tisk tisk. go ahed al and move to la because us oaklnad fans likely will not miss your torture.

JB, are you kidding me? CJ has been getting torched all year and that ball was tipped right to him! Lets go ahead and give him the Willie Brown achievement award shall we?
November 1st, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Jano time play calling is bad, why, cause we don’t have a QB 9 ints damn
November 1st, 2009 at 2:57 pm
As observed by the announcing group on TV, “it’s eighty degrees out herte & JaMarcus sits on the bench with a woolen cap on”. Maybe that’s because he’s brain-dead!

I gave him credit for 1 play in which he did what he was supposed to do. That’s more than what were getting from most of the other players. The issuance of awards was not suggested by me.
