Cable gets character reference _ from Kiffin
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, November 2nd, 2009 at 10:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.
You’d think things couldn’t be going much worse for Raiders coach Tom Cable, given the Randy Hanson affair, a 2-6 record, a non-productive future of the franchise at quarterback, an ESPN story detailing a history of violence toward women and a club press release saying they’re going give a serious look at the allegations.
Never fear, Lane is here.
Lane Kiffin told Bay Area News Group-East Bay columnist Cam Inman that Cable deserves to keep his job at least through next season and seemed surprised by the ESPN story, calling Cable “a first class coach and a great person.”
This is the same Kiffin still involved in a process attempting to recover the remainder of his 2008 salary for being fired “with cause” and parlaying his ouster into a better gig at the University of Tennessee.
Kiffin’s support will either be a strike against Cable or have no impact at all. It surely isn’t going to help, although from the sound of it Kiffin would surely consider Cable for a job on his staff should he suddenly become available.
A link to Inman’s column is here.

Jhill,
We are not all the same, and we all don’t have the same standards. How can we analyse JR without putting him in the right situation? I don’t consider a bad Oline, 2 Rookie WRs as starters, and bad play the Right Situation!!!!

The sad part is…Kiffin was right about everything. I just wish he would have succeeded in overthrowing The Emperor but unfortunately, the force wasn’t strong enough within him.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:03 am
Cable was brought in to change the attitude on the team. To change the negative atmosphere into a positive one.
Now get positive or he’ll punch you in the face.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:10 am
Hire Gruden. Demote Cable back to OL coach. Bench JaBustus until his weight is 250# or below. And, after he has demonstrated that he’s learned the entire playbook. Additionally, in practice, he has to demonstrate accuracy & touch on all necessary passes. If he’s unable to do the above by the end of the season, cut him outright. If this happens, he’ll never play in the NFL again.
Chucky, if given the HC position, will do 1 of 2 things: Make JR play to a level that is required of an NFL QB or get rid of this BUST and find someone else to do the job & then start winning games.

Haven’t stopped by for a while but I have been watching the team and have been reading the articles. Our Offense is Offensive. We Effin suck on O! No Wr’s not one of em is worth a crap right now! Why would u start 2 rookie wr’s? It makes no sense! Our O-line regressed to something I saw in the Art Shell part 2 era. No Running game! When we start saying Fargas is a stud then we know we have hit rock bottom. Don’t get me wrong props for running his ass off but still he is no starter. Jamarcus has no help and that includes him not helping himself . The boy doesn’t put the effort in to succeed in this league and there is no excuse for that in my book. Wake me up at 5 in the morning to get paid millions so I can be a QB in an NFL franchise (The best one in my opinion) So I can attempt to master my craft so I can audible if I see something in the D. HAS ANYONE SEEN HIM AUDIBLE? Does he know what he’s looking at out there? What is the point of having a QB coach if he won’t do anything to help his own mechanics? I damn near broke my house when I saw the first pick! He threw on his back foot again! WTF! UGH! ok needed to vent go Raiders! We lost the D already. Next half I hope gets better. They will play hard once Chaz gets back. If we error in that game the team will fold with Chaz or not. We need a GM.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:39 am
Kiffin was contacted by the press, and is just blowing sunshine to avoid tarnishing his grievance case to recoup what Al owes him.
I’ve got to tell you, what a week. Hearing all of the Raider fans supporting the abuse of women. The comments in blogs… about how one of the girls deserved it because he caught her cheating. Unreal. I think it tells us a lot about the character of hard core Raider fans anymore. What a disturbing sect of society.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:49 am
“STATEMENT ABOUT ESPN
ESPN’s role in this matter must be carefully examined. ESPN routinely disseminates falsehoods about the Raiders. During the last year, ESPN (working with someone who was in this organization) engaged in a calculated effort to distort the truth about the Raiders, utilizing lies and innuendo.”
For example?
(that’s what you’re supposed to ask at this point, Jerry. Kind of your job)
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:14 am
Hopefully, Al can now do the right thing and send out a strong message to his team and to women everywhere — violence toward women is unacceptable! Cable’s credibility as a coach is gone, and he needs to be jettisoned from the team. #2 needs to be benched, and we desperately need a strong GM in place. That’s just for starters …
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:14 am
If what Kiffin says is true and he would welcome Cable onto his staff, that would be just terrific — let’s just send him to Rocky Top, one of the highest ranked states in the country for spousal abuse — it all makes sense!
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:36 am
Hypothetically, if Al were to be eyeing Gruden as replacement HC this season, could he? I mean, what’s Gruden’s contract status with his media work? Is it a 1 year deal, does it give him an out if he lines up a coaching job? Or does he have to wait for 2010 or beyond?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:16 am
GG:
Gruden has indicated that he will take a closer look at getting back into coaching at the end of this season. Likely frontrunners are the Redskins and Cowboys — the Skins are at the top of his list right now, according to several sources. Right now, it looks like we’re stuck with either Marshall or Tollner as our short-term possibilities.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:23 am
Good Morning NATION!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 am
Isn’t Gruden still getting paid for the Tampa job like 4 mill a year and he loses that if he coaches in the NFL before his contract is up. Watching the NYC Marathon made me wish Russell had to run it you hear when they said he was 260 no way that man is less than 280+.

the kiss of death
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:30 am
Good morning Nation! The attitude certainly has to change — we need to get guys back from injury, we need receivers who can catch consistently, we need tacklers who wrap and FINISH and we need a QB who can lead (I have nothing against Jamarcus, other than the fact that he is NOT a true NFL QB — neither was Ryan Leaf).
Above all else, Cable needs to go … h$ll, Al didn’t even want to introduce him at the hiring press conference last year! Insert an interim for now, and perform due diligence to get a GOOD coach into the Bay area next year. Let Frye and Gradkowski compete for the starting job, while Jamarcus rides the exercise bike on the sidelines.
Pick up Chambers, and start Javon — make him either produce or blow out a knee and be done with him (sounds callous, I know, but that’s about where we’re at).
Give up on the hopes of Gruden coming back … not going to happen.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:34 am
Let’s just line Janikowski up for a “free kick” — up JaMuckass’s ass! Maybe then he’ll learn how to read coverages — and maybe even start stepping into his throws every one in awhile!

November 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 am
Ahhh the kiss of death from Lance. His war with Al Davis put this franchise back at least 5 years. 24, Lance wasn’t right about anything. Both he and Al Davis are to blame for many of the problems that this franchise have. Lances inability to develop JRuss as a rookie. (And please don’t tell me that Lance was powerless, if he can order up a 75yard FG attempt he can call out JRuss publicly for poor work ethic and not making a commitment to this team.) He used this team to get a college job. He was a nobody at USC. Sark brought him in as a OC candidtate and he charmed Al into a job, which i blame on Al as his role as a GM. Oh but at least we still have Lances legacy on staff. Sanjay Lal, WR’s coach was brought in by Lance. His claim to fame at USC was how well he stapled scouting reports and picked up the donuts for the morning meetings that JRuss sleeps thru.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:00 am
We have a lot to clean up! How many other teams do you think would have Sanjay Lal as a receivers coach? – PLEASE! I think Al’s hiring of Kiffin was as much a result of not being able to find anyone else who would take the job .. ditto for Cable. There are several people out there who haven’t gotten their shot as a head coach yet who I think would make a good, solid impression on a young and floundering team … how about Russ Grimm?

November 3rd, 2009 at 6:37 am
Do we actually still have a first round draft pick? I thought we gave it up for seymour…
I really don’t want to suggest this because he’s such a decent guy and player but… I think we should trade Asomugha for a first and second round pick and continue to bring in more players from the draft – are we actually going to use Asomugha properly (as a key player in a playoff team) – no… so let’s use his value – Anyways I think we can cope with Johnson and Routt for now – no where near as good – but good enough… – they seemed ok in that game where nnamdi was out..
Thoughts?

November 3rd, 2009 at 6:46 am

You don’t understand how Dan Snyder works in Washington: he spends a lot of money to make a big “splash”, then meddles with the team to make all the decisions. Remember Steve Spurrier? Remember Marty? Remember Jeff George? Deion (past his prime) Time?
The guy who really needs to leave town there is Vinny Cerrato … if Gruden goes to the Skins, as long as Sny-dee is the owner, he doesn’t stand a chance … don’t feel sorry for Chucky though, because he will make a TON of cash!

November 3rd, 2009 at 7:15 am
The one difference between Al and Dan Snyder is the fact that Dan doesn’t wage war with everyone … he just spends the money and moves on. He doesn’t care about the Skins — they’re just his play toy. Al, I believe, cares deeply about the Raiders … he’s just like the old man who loves to eat, but ends up getting more food on his shirt than in his mouth … very sad.

I don’t want Gruden! Bring in Del Rio & Gilbride. Make Gilbride the HC, and let Del Rio be the DC.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:24 am
In his office, the Supreme Commander of the Silver & Black welcomes a familiar face.
Al: Jon, I need you. The greatness of the Raiders lies in the future. We have several young, very talented players like JaMarcus Russell and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Gruden: I don’t know Al, Snyder’s willing to give me 4 mil a year and full control of football operations.
Al: Snyder? That snake? He knows nothing of football. 1 mil a year and you get to call plays on offense — but none of that West Coast nonsense. Here, just brush the dust off of that. That’s Sid Gillman’s playbook. It’s gold.
Gruden: Uh, Al — that’s nowhere near what I could get in Washington.
Al: Yes, but you get to return to the Team of the Decades, the greatest franchise in all of sports — the Los Angeles Raiders!
Gruden: You drive a hard bargain old man. Done.
Suddenly, the room starts to spin like a psychedelic trip and everything goes black.
Al Davis wakes up in a cold sweat in his bed.
Al: Dammit, it was all a dream.
Lying next to him, Al’s bedmate tells him to go back to sleep.
Al: Shut up, Herrera! By the way, I need to be changed.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:25 am
Gilbride has a lot of exp as a coach in the NFL and in calling plays. I like what he does with the Giants, from rotation of RBs & WRs, and getting them all involved as early as possible.
Fire Cable!!!
Hire Gilbride as a HC, and Del Rio as the DC! Del should be fired by the end of this season. He is still young and needs time to learn more about being a HC, and having to supervise everything was too much for him, and I think he can be a great DC for us.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:29 am
Gilbride is not touching the Raiduhs… Before hiring the obese carreer position coach as HC we had to lure a 30 year old assistant coach from college into the position. Nobody wants to work under Al, simple as that.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:34 am
For those of us that watched the Monday night game…
The Raiders, specifically the recievers need to go out and buy the “mouthpieces” the Saints are using.
Use the bye week to go shopping Mr. Lal, hook up your WR corp with those mouthpieces that expand flexibility. I don’t know exactly how it works, but you can’t argue with the success of the Saints. Do whatever it takes to make our team better.

I think it is BS that media is running Tom out of town. If Tom is fired for not producing, then I have no problem with that. But assassinate him as a person and basically blacklist him in the nfl for the rest of his life is pure BS.
Leonard Little killed a mother over DUI and he still played in this league. Another receiver killed a man while doing DUI last year and he got a couple of months. Where’s the outrage?

It’s the year 2025 and the Raiders are playing in a playoff game against the Los Angeles Cardinals (don’t ask!). Let’s send it down to the field to our broadcast team — former Raiders QB Rich Gannon and former Raiderette Taffy McLean (fictitious name, btw).
Rich: Well Taffy, it’s been a long time since the Raiders have been in the playoffs.
Taffy: That’s right, Rich — it’s been 30 years!
Rich: Actually, only 24, but who’s counting?
Taffy: It appears that Head Coach Justin Fargas has really got the guys ready today!
Rich: Yeah, two of the players just knocked a whole in the side wall of Pepsi/Ameritrade/Hooters/Burger King/General Motors Stadium, and one of the linebackers just bit the head off a chicken … kind of like the throwback days of the 1970s.
Taffy: I wasn’t even alive then.
Rich: I don’t think ANYONE was … oh wait, there were a couple of guys —
(Rich then points up to the Press Box)

See Michael Crabtree? You see some organizations send playbooks and game film to players that are holding out. Some coaches stay in contact with players while they are dealing with the business of football so they can hit the ground running when they do sign.
Also Lance had an entire offseason to develop JRuss. But he spent all of his time updating his resume and crying about what he didn’t have. So what was Kiffin right about? His job is to develop talent that is on the team. He failed. He never developed any talent when he was at USC either. And he never did anything to help the Raiders. His fault for taking a job he was not ready for, Al’s fault for bringing him in.

November 3rd, 2009 at 8:47 am
RaiderO,
Del Rio? Gilbride? Shoot me now.
What has Del Rio ever done as a head coach to inspire confidence? He’s been to the playoffs twice in 6 years (0-2 in the posteason) and isn’t going back in this, his 7th season. The Jags were 5-11 last year. They just lost to the 0-6 Titans and should have lost to the putrid Rams a few weeks back but pulled it out in OT.
Gilbride has a 6-16 career NFL head coaching record (Cable is 6-14). The Giants have been floundering lately despite having a lot of weapons on offense. I can’t tell you how many times he calls a 40 yard passing play on 3rd and 1 despite having a 265 pound running back and another excellent, tough back in Bradshaw.
To me it’s between Fassel and Gruden. Gruden would be an obviously great choice. I don’t think anyone would complain about that one. But it’s probably not likely Al will go that route.
Fassel is 58-53 as an NFL head coach. He coached a Kerry Collins-QB’d team to the Super Bowl this decade. He was the NFL Coach of the Year in his first season in NY in 1997. His teams were no worse than 7-9 until his final season when they were really destroyed with injuries. He resurrected Collins’ career. He mentored John Elway, Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms. He also discovered Sean Payton and John Fox as they were his offensive and defensive coordinators in NY. He has also worked in Oakland before (QB coach in 1995). He has the personality to get along with Al and he wants the job. This is the kind of coach we need.

Raidertbone, LMAO.
Chris, I think Fassell would be a good move. He’s definitely a QB’s coach. A lot of QBs have said how he helped them in their progressions and especially mechanics.
The guy sent a hand written letter to Davis asking to be hired.
Strange that an accomplished NFL head coach actually WANTS the job.
Of course, in an offseason where there are more qualified candidates than in recent memory, Al will probably f that up too.

Gruden is a hot property right now; he’s going to go to the highest bidder — that would be either Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones (probably the former). Even if that weren’t the case, he wouldn’t come back to Oakland unless it was as a GM — now the question is: would the old man relinquish the control and allow that to happen?
I would say no, right now, but we can keep hoping … in any case, he’s already been the HC in Oakland once, and I don’t think his ego would allow him to come back in that same capacity (following in the footsteps of Cable and Kiffin) … count on that!

Sorry guys — gotta break for lunch (on the East Coast). Then, I have important business — I’ve got to finish blowtorching the nads off my D’Angelo Hall voodoo doll … followed by Randy Moss, Derrick Burgess, and “Lance” (actually, I think I’ll just cut his off completely!)

Raidertbone,
I’ve heard that Shanahan to Washington is virtually a done deal. I’m sure Jerry Jones would be interested in Gruden but the Cowboys are playing pretty well right now and Phillips could actually hang on there.
Everything I’ve heard from Gruden regarding the Raiders has been positive and generally defending the organization from media cohorts mocking them. That tells me he’s trying to keep that door open. And the guy is a showman. He likes the spotlight. There would be no more attention-grabbing story for him personally than returning to Oakland.
If the money is right, I think Gruden would come back to Oakland. Would Al be on board with that is the bigger question. I’m sure Al doesn’t want to get pushed to the background in terms of credit if the Raiders turn it around, and that would probably happen if the Raiders turned it around under Gruden. But how many double-digit loss seasons can we/he endure as well? He can always claim credit for discovering Gruden in the first place and making him the youngest HC in the league at the time.

Someone suggested Boise State’s Chris Petersen as another possibility as our next HC. I kind of like that idea. I know college coaches making the leap to the NFL have been kind of spotty, but I think Petersen is a real solid coach. He’s very creative on offense and reminds me a lot of Urban Meyer in terms of Xs and Os genius when Meyer was at Utah.
Although you’d have to wonder if Petersen, 43-4 at Boise State, would take the job. He’s a made man at Boise and I’m sure he’ll be on the short list of candidates for any big-time BCS school job openings in the future.
How bad would things be for the Raiders if they couldn’t get the coach of Boise State University to take the job?

How about this. We have 8 games left. Give 2 starts to Frye, give 2 starts Gradikowski, and 2 more to Jamarcus. The person that plays the best in their two starts get the remaining two games. It’s not like were going to the playoffs and we might as well see what we have here already. No sense in cutting two guys next year without seeing them. And it might make Jamarcus feel like he has to really try. Thoughts?

If Al gets Gruden to win with his prized draft picks and Gruden coaches them up and gets them producing, he can take all the credit.
Resistance to the WCO and Al’s ego would be major factors in preventing this reunion from happening.

Long reader from Mexico and a big raider fan since 76. We have to remember that Al still have the eye on young coaches, remember when he praised Sean Payton and Wisenhaunt, the same with Gilbreath right now. The problem is no big assistant will come to the raiders unless Al gives up some power, we must undestand that the only option will be a second string HC, but the problem is, who will be willing to came here and coach with AD in full power. Unless that change, we must be strong and have a lot of pepto and koolaid for sundays.

“Unless that change(s), we must be strong and have a lot of pepto and koolaid for sundays.”
LMAO! Raidermexico, that was hilarious! Some of the comments on these articles are almost as hilarious as the replies on the ProFootballTalk (PFT) site.
I have a good idea! Why not merely pour the entire bottle of Pepto DIRECTLY into the Koolaid?
As I am typing this right now, I am STILL chortling to myself…

20 yrs ago I backhanded my ex-wife in the car during an argument. I was sorry for it and we have become best friends even after we divorced and moved on with new spouses. I guess that makes me a wife beater too?
