Head start for Seymour?

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, November 5th, 2009 at 11:04 am in Oakland Raiders.

No sign of defensive end Richard Seymour as the Raiders went through warmups and drills Thursday preceding their last practice before getting the weekend off.

As per bye week custom, players will beat a hasty retreat from the locker room following practice, some catching flights home, others remaining the area to relax.

Wide receiver Chaz Schilens and guard Robert Gallery continued to practice with the team, with the latter almost assuredly rejoining the starting line up at left guard when the Raiders host the Kansas City Chiefs Nov. 15.

More to come following practice and Tom Cable’s press briefing . . .

    wow. are we that desperate?

how about dropping Watkins for Curry, Lelie, Carter, Jerry Porter or Matt Jones? Maybe even Ike Hilliard or Amani Toomer …

I think thats fair as a play caller.

I’d say F though if you include the distraction regarding Randy Hanson and his history of abuse

this team has showed up unprepared and confused at times. like Antonio Pierce said “playing the Raiders feels like a scrimmage”

jamarcus and the wide receivers should NOT be vacationing during the bye week. they should do as drew brees does with the saints. he and his receivers work AFTER practice to get their timing down. they practice till they get it perfectly right. clearly, this team is nowhere near approaching what the saints do and it is a reflection of their practice habits. they might be working hard, but they aren’t working hard enough nor efficiently.

U are wrong bro, Seymour plays with half heart, A game is being dominate every week, not when you feel like there is a good match up (meaning a weak OL), Seymour is having the Moss syndrome. The good thing is that he is still in his first year as a Raider, if we keep sucking, you will see his C game every week, so far I see a B effort.

It’s obvious every single Cable comment has one intent..to get Al to consider that MAYBE next week things will get on track, and to not fire him.

As I recall Cable seems to have only once stated things looked like crap..and that was AFTER A GAME, and blamed the bad showing on the previous Friday’s practice.

The man has no spine. No owner wants a spineless guy running the team.
Add onto that his massive amount of new baggage that would overload a Boeing 757, Cable is toast in the NFL, in my opinion.

While Al loves the bargain basement fee Cable expects as HC, the negative PR that’s mounting says everything about Cable is a disaster.

Of course, it’s Al. He’ll cut off his nose to spite his face, just to not do what is expected.

For all those who are so blinded into blaming Cable, here is a reality check on who is running the show, AL Davis, period. Players know that, Cable knows that, and the media knows that, how come some of you are so freaking blind to understand who is running the show? National Organization for Women wants Cable fired
Posted by Mike Florio on November 5, 2009 3:17 PM ET
As the Raiders and the NFL embark on the inherently delicate process of determining the best course of action in the wake of allegations of domestic violence against coach Tom Cable, the National Organization for Women has chimed in.

“Tom Cable’s history of violence against women raises a question: why is he still the head coach of an NFL team?” Terry O’Neill, the President of NOW, told USA Today. “Mr. Cable admits having battered his first wife, and he stands accused of battering two other intimate partners as well. As a survivor of domestic violence, I know that women do not make such accusations lightly. Indeed, women have much more to lose than to gain by coming forward to tell their stories.

“The Oakland Raiders, properly, say they are undergoing a ’serious evaluation’ of these recent allegations. At the very least he should be suspended during this process. . . . A man who has admitted battering his wife has no business being a role model for all of us who would like to be able to look up to the head coach of an NFL football team.”

Though the problem of domestic violence is very real and should not be minimized, the fact that the incident to which Cable has admitted occurred more than two decades ago gives us some concern. .

So the NFL faces a difficult dilemma in this case. Given that Cable has struggled as a head coach and in light of the fact that defensive assistant Randy Hanson emerged from an August meeting with a broken jaw, it makes sense for the Raiders to sever ties with Cable in light of the totality of the circumstances.

A far thornier dilemma will arise if/when an NFL head coach with no history of assault allegations and a solid won-loss record faces outdated but meritorious claims of domestic violence. Cable surely isn’t the only NFL head coach who ever has snapped under the stress of a job premised in large part on physicality. Indeed, we’re surprised in hindsight that similar claims haven’t previously been made against other NFL head coaches.

Now that multiple women have gone on the record regarding Cable, we wonder whether any of the former wives and girlfriends of other NFL coaches will do the same.

  43. TrueRaider Says:

According to Jerry who knows more than you and me, AL only controlled the draft as Gruden decided who plays and who to sign in free agency. He didnt want Jeff George, he went with Gannon. Do you think Cable can go to AL and say I wanna go with Grad or Frye? AL will pimp slap him right away.

DMAC, with all due respect, you getting this wrong. Cable has never had authority, the last couple of coaches we had as a Raider had no authority over AL. Gruden was an exception that won’t happen again. Every coach coming to the Raiders knows which system that team is going to run, AL Davis verticle pass and man to man defense. Under Gruden, we were running a pure WCO system, Kiffen tried to run this system and guess what happened, fired with no money. Hey I share your feelings on Al Davis. His ownership method is why we are falling on hard times. You can’t blame the players, as most of them have not been here for 7 seasons…Al hired all these POS HCs because he knew they were pussies and wouldn’t go against him.

Al is a mother-fing POS owner, but he isn’t going anywhere. Our only hope is to fire the fat wife beater and hope that Al hires a coach with some balls (he did it once in the past 15 years)…I’d take that 1% chance of Al hitting it right with a new HC over the 0% chance that Cable is cut out for this job. WE ARE GOING NOWHERE WITH CABLE! No chance in hell Cable will EVER be more than he has already shown as a HC…he is a 17-49 LOSER as a HC!

Dakota, how do you know Gannon wasn’t popular in the locker room? I’ve only heard the Raiders brass bash him personally. I’m yet to hear a player bash him on a personal level. I think one player did allude to the notion in 3rd person, that Gannon wasn’t popular, whatever, but when has a player outright bashed Gannon personally? I haven’t seen it. Meanwhile, several players have bashed Al Davis and/or the organization, which translates to Al Davis as well, because the last I checked, there’s nobody else who runs that organization. What that tells me is that the players merely disapproved of Gannon’s tenacious style of leadership (considering before Gannon’s arrival they had no leadership whatsoever, and, not unlike present day, players only went to Oakland to collect a check in their final few years and not have a coach ..or player..yelling in their face), but aside from that, they had no problem with him. You’d be surprised how much athletes like winning, and how much they’ll tolerate an uptight locker room leader when they do. Unless Gannon literally never spoke to anyone, I mean if he was really that snobbish, I guarantee you the only players that didn’t like Gannnon were the ones who only came to Oakland for the easy check and the siesta, and didn’t care rather the team won or lost. And, I’m glad they hated Gannon. They’re not team mates, anyway. They’re junk players taking advantage of our dumb as sin owner who still thinks they’re great, and that they’re determined to win a championship. I consider them Raiders about as much as I consider Todd Marinovich a Raider. What they think of Gannon is irrelevant.

    ____________________________________

Hey, Gruden wasn’t a puppet, neither was Kiffen…one worked out better than the other, but Al does occasionally hire a guy with some spine…it just doesn’t happen very often.

That means that there is a VERY SLIM CHANCE that Al MIGHT hire a decent HC…whereas our alternative is to stick with Cable who is so clearly not a legit NFL HC to anyone with a brain? At least with a new HC we have a chance…with Cable we have NO CHANCE.

As an Al Davis hater that understands the motherfer is going nowhere, it is the only way I maintain any hope for the future of the Raiders. With Cable and Al we have no hope…that has been made evident over the course of the past 20 games…but maybe, just maybe with the next guy?????? I know, a slim thread of hope…but better than no hope with the Wife Beating Buffoon.

    Just my opinion.

I think we as fans are also to be blamed. The Browns fans (I think his name big dog) forced a meeting with their owner, Snyder apologized to his fans who were forced to throw away their emotional signs against him. Lions fans boycotted their team and forced the owner to fire Matt Millen, what are we doing as fans? We got dumb guys who support AL Davis and call themselves loyal fans. Until AL knows he needs to hire a true GM and a good Coach who works side by side with the GM, we will remain a mediocre team.

    Crude Earl,

Was N.O.W. silent on Bobby Brown, Chris Brown, and Terrence Howard?

As far as Letterman’s affairs, and Kanye West/Taylor Swift, I’m going to assume you’re joking. You can’t be that retarded.

Al Davis loves his Raiders just as much as we do, but he has no clue how to run a franchise anymore.

Guys, give it a break! NOTHING will change until Al is gone. NOTHING. Hopefully it will be in a couple of years. In last 100 games the Raiders have won 25? Freaken pathetic. No decent coach will come to Oakland until Al is gone. It has been real hard to be a Raider fan for the past 5 years. Same BS every year.

Whose fault are the Raiders downfalls? Jamarcus Russel? Al Davis? Tom Cable? Well the owners job (even as controlling as Al is) is to provide the means to win. I believe that Al has provided the raw talent that is necessary to win.

Russell: While he has seemingly digressed from the end of last season, I believe him when he says it’s not his fault. He was given a big time contract he didn’t earn, that is gonna lead to motivational issues throughout a young qb’s career. The fact of the matter is that he has the ability, but when it all comes down to it, it is Tom Cable’s job to keep his quarterback motivated to work hard. As coach it would be Cable’s responsibility to see that Russell wants to show up to practice early and stay late.

Cable: His legal issues aside, Cable is not a good fit for the Raiders period. A coaches job when you’re on the Raiders staff and only have limited decision making power if any is to keep your players inspired, well practiced, and motivated. This whole media frenzy is going to leave Cable with an intimidation over motivation persona which will in turn lead to more losses for the Raiders. The fact of the matter is it was Cable’s job to turn Russell into a leader, he was coming off a pretty good last few games last season and Tom Cable refuses to call to his strengths.

Side note, I think Louis Murphy might have been better than DHB in college and so far he definitely is better in the NFL, but you can’t blame Russell until the offensive line starts blocking, the runners start running, and the receivers start catching all the close passes.

Russell should have been practicing with Gallery and Shilens! He needs it more than any player in the league.

But he is off to Alabama to eat more. this is why this team is a train wreck. The more you let this Guy get away with this crap, the worse this team will be.

cable is a coward. he can’t confront a 80 year old man who can barely walk. But he can beat on a woman! This Guy is a joke.

    Fire this Bastard!
