Nick Miller at least a week away

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 12:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Wide receiver/punt return specialist Nick Miller remains in some pain and hasn’t been cleared to practice while recovering from a broken tibia.

Chaz Schilens, meanwhile, is keeping his fingers crossed that he’ll be able to face the Chiefs Sunday at the Coliseum.

The Raiders placed a lot of faith in two players they believe aren’t short on talent even if they’re a little light when it comes to their resumes.

Miller showed enough during training camp that the Raiders had specialty plays for him, occasionally lining him up as a running back. He was penciled in as the kickoff return specialist, beating out incumbent Justin Miller, until what he thought was a shin injury turned out instead to be a cracked tibia.

Instead of putting Nick Miller on injured reserve, ending his season but keeping him a Raider, the club instead has kept him on the 53-man roster through eight games.

“Man, you have no idea. To make it here and to get to this level, I just want to show myself,” Miller said. “Words don’t describe how frustrating it is to just sit out and watch.”

Schilens’ return from a broken fifth metatarsal on his left foot was so anticipated the Raiders actually put out a press the week heading into the Jets game, only to be sidelined against because of foot soreness.

Raiders coach Tom Cable sounded optimistic last Thursday Schilens would return. Schilens is being more cautious.

“It’s not 100 percent so I’d like it to be so I’ve just got to work through it,” Schilens said.

Schilens absence was noted by Al Davis and has been pointed to by Cable as a big reason JaMarcus Russell and the passing game has struggled to find a rhythm with the wide receivers. Schilens, a seventh-round draft pick last year out of San Diego State, caught five passes from Russell in the first quarter of the preseason opener against Dallas.

Rookie Darrius Heyward-Bey, by contrast, has five catches in eight games as a starter opposite fellow rookie Louis Murphy, who has 16 receptions.

“I guess he expects me to do well. I have to go out there and do my job, just like everyone else has to go out there and do their job,” Cable said. “I think if we have a good week of practice and prepare, we know what Kansas City does, we play them twice a year, we’ll go out there and play well.”

Joseph back for third go-round

Defensive tackle William Joseph, already cut on two occasions this season, was flown in last Friday to work out and take a physical, and was signed to a contract Monday.

Coincidentally, or perhaps not, the only other team Joseph has worked out for lately is Kansas City.

“I don’t know what’s going on, they didn’t give me a reason why,” Joseph said.

The Raiders are down a defensive lineman this week with Greg Ellis having undergone arthroscopic surgery. Ellis plays end and Joseph is primarily a tackle, but it’s possible the Raiders could have Seymour play more outside instead of occasionally moving him to tackle.

No word as yet as to who lost a roster spot to make room for Joseph. Linebacker Ricky Brown was scheduled to get a cast removed from his right foot to determine if he will be able to rehab it and play this season. He has been out since Oct. 11, tearing ligaments in his right ankle.

Brown went on injured last season with a groin injury and later had surgery for a sports hernia.

More to come later . . .

Yes DHB has really made a difference this season. Last year, without DHB we scored a few TDs…this year with DHB, we have scored VERY few TDs.

    Great pick!

DHB and Mitchell really putting us over the top!

  18. 4evaRaider Says:

I sure hope they dont rush Chaz or Nick Miller back.I think the Broncos are 6-1…they “could” lose out but I highly dought it.I think thats our only way 2 post season would be as divisional winner,8-8 wont make it 4 us.So the season is basically done, play 4 pride type thing.Highly improbable but not impossible. If Chaz or Nick Miller need the rest of the season…so be it,imo

  19. KoolKell Says:

Darrius Heyward Bey and Mike Mitchell are really putting on a show, boyezz!

    Attention all football players!

Do you have talent and want to waste it with a know-nothing coaching staff? Or do you have no talent and want to be drafted anyhow? If so, do I have an offer for you!

Just call 1-800-Raiders and ask for Al Davis!

(offer applies to applicants with qualified 40 times only! Decent football players that are winners need not apply!)
