Surprise! Ellis had shoulder surgery, too

News and notes following coach Tom Cable’s post practice press briefing Wednesday as the Raiders prepare to host the Kansas City Chiefs:

— Defensive end Greg Ellis didn’t practice Wednesday following arthroscopic surgery. Or was that surgeries? Turns out doctors fixed more than just his knee.

“They worked on both the knee and the shoulder,” Cable said. “Everything is coming along fine, it’s just a matter of whether there’s enough time.”

Cable said if Ellis can practice by Friday, he could conceivably play. If not, rookie Matt Shaughnessy would make his first NFL start at left end.

— Ricky Schmitt, who punted for the Raiders during training camp and finished last season on the practice squad, was on the field as practice concluded, booming kicks to Johnnie Lee Higgins and practice squad returner Shaun Bodiford.

Why would Schmitt even be around, given that Shane Lechler is on pace to break Sammy Baugh’s all-time record for punting average at 52.3 yards per kick?

“Just to see if he’s had some workouts and he’s kicking better,” Cable said.

Of course, Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt, like Schmitt, is left-footed, and it gives Higgins a chance to field a kick which comes with a different spin. And if Higgins looks shaky enough, the Raiders could always activate Bodiford.

— Predictably, and wisely, Cable isn’t about to delve into the details of how he will use Chaz Schilens and Darren McFadden, two important pieces to the offensive puzzle who went through the entirety of practice Wednesday with no limitations and are on schedule to play, if not start.

“I’m kind of messing around with personnel and how I’m going to start it and all that,” Cable said.

— The Raiders will prepare defensively this week without consideration of Larry Johnson, who rushed for 938 yards on 222 carries in 10 games against the Raiders dating back to 2004 and scored 12 touchdowns (11 rushing).

The Chiefs are ranked 24th in rushing offense, and will utilize some combination of Jamal Charles, Dantrell Savage and Kolby Smith. Smith had 31 carries for 150 yards as a rookie against the Raiders in 2007 in a game won 20-17 by Oakland at Arrowhead Stadium.

“They still have good runners,” Cable said. “It’s not like they’re going to change their system of their scheme. The runner they got is a good player. Larry was a very good player. So, it impacts it to some degree. But in this business, it’s the next man up.”

Linebacker Kirk Morrison and cornerback Chris Johnson both expect the Chiefs to try and get their smaller, shiftier runners in space rather than pound ahead as they did with Larry Johnson.

— Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel will start his second game in Oakland, having beaten the Raiders 49-26 as a member of the Patriots last season. He completed 18 of 30 passes for 218 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

“That game in particular was a pretty emotional game for me,” Cassel told Bay Area reporters by conference call. “My father just passed away that Wednesday and we went in and it’s quite a place to play but for me personally it was quite an experience and quite a game. I was able to honor him in a nice way by us getting the victory there with the Patriots.”

— Claiming Chris Chambers off waivers from San Diego paid immediate dividends as he caught two touchdown passes in his first game. By claiming his contract, the Chiefs are obligated to pay the remainder of Chambers’ salary this season.

Before Chambers was claimed, Cable said the Raiders wouldn’t be interested “because of who we’ve got there.”

“He’s a veteran player in the league. Any place he would have went he probably would make an impact,” Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson said. “I’m not really surprised.”

— While Cable insists he “can see the mountain top” with regard to his team turning things around, Chiefs coach Todd Haley went for straight reality.

“I wish I had that sense,” Haley said. Nah, as a coach, you can just point it out. We’re 0-3 in games decided by seven points or less. That hurts, obviously. That means there’s little things on each side of the ball in each of those games that could have made a difference in winning instead of losing. So we’ve just got to continue to focus on doing all the little things right all the time, not part of the time, Keep them focused and concentrating throughout a game in order to have a win.”

— The only players who didn’t practice other than Ellis were wide receiver/return specialist Nick Miller (broken tibia) and linebacker Ricky Brown (ankle).

Cable insists he “can see the mountain top”… what the hell is he talking about? This offense is worse than the Bed & Breakfast POS offense Art Shell ran. Art had zero probability of keeping his job. Cable, the mountain top is a phone call by Uncle Al on christmas eve saying he’s firing you for cause.

  • Nnamdi21

Thanks to all our troops past and present who don’t get to choose when, why and where they fight.

Thats OUR job to make make sure its for a just cause…

    Lets go Raiders!!!

Al’s christmas letter to Tom Cable:

    Dear Tom,

You are in breach of contract because you have lost more games that you’ve won, you are overweight, and you pissed off N.O.W.. I have no choice but to fire you for cause. Inside the envelope you will find a transparency of this letter you can put on your overhead projector. Much love, A.D. Football Inc.

  • 24

Nnamdi21 – First off, thank you because I’m a veteran however, don’t say that our troops of present don’t get to choose when, why and where they fight only because they signed the dotted line knowing full well that it was the military. Maybe some were mislead or something similar but nobody made us do anything. Now, once you’re in the military, you don’t have a say but if they can’t deal with that, then they shouldn’t have signed. It was different times when there was a draft held so that I can understand.

In re: to 24 post 4, JMac has had the worst O-Line in the league, we have scored 78 points this year because of our O-Line, Thin and quick does not get it in the NFL, period! When AL puts some effort into BOTH lines, the Raiders will accend to their rightful place in the AFC west, until that time, blame JMac, that seems to be the the flavor of this blog. The kid has the talent, but like changing coaches, changing inexperienced players hoping for a good result, you still get the same results.

Another example of Al Davis in the way. Imo.

Nick Miller supposedly made Justin Miller expendable on returns.

I guess Brian Schnieder resigned, eh? Jeez, J.Miller ran back 2. Higgins ran back 2.

Doesn’t seem like crony, Fassel’s boy is doing so well.

  • 860Todd Christensen

Kell, we are both oldtimers, when is the last time you saw an O-Line that we have on the field? It collapses before the Q even gets the ball. The D is so pourous because they are knocked on their azzes on the point of contact. We do not have a run stuffing LB of any sort, and the blitz is a bye word? This org is really pizzing me off, this is NOT Raider Football!

Let’s hope and pray that we can still go 3-3 in the AFC West and squeak out a few more wins – perhaps we will see 4-4 or 5-3. Think about it nation, we certainly didn’t see wins the last two weeks of the season last year. Perhaps we will turn the corner… perhaps.

  • 860Todd Christensen

Mista, give JMac an O-Line and watch him prosper, give him that much, the poor kid has tried to learn by trial by fire, give him an O-Line that can give him 2 sec’s to make a decision, not .02 seconds to make that decision.

  • Mistabrown

Lets give him another 3 years to learn the playbook!
Are you ok with that ?

Lets not fine him or bench him for coming in over weight or sleeping in meetings! The poor guy has a bad o-line!!

860, do you know A Rogers has been sacked 12 times in 2 games? Thats a damn sorry O-line but Rogers isnt stinking up the field. Yes they are losing but he can still compete unlike our loaf.

Some good posts on here, but I’d like to make mention that a boycott and indirectly an action that represents the fans frustration, should not just be aimed at Al Davis, I’d like to suggest that there have been some pretty poor performances by the players. For what ever reason, time and again the players have outright quit on the field. You could pick any blow out loss, but hands down the worst IMO was the Atlanta game last year, but there is plenty to choose from.

Al has made mistakes, but as was well said in a post(s) above, Al spends the money, Al wants to win.

I have questioned at times if the players have wanted to win.

BUT, we’re past the midway point, we’re reasonably healthy again. Time to “reload” and put up on Sunday. It’s a cliche, but one game at a time. KC this Sunday, then Cincy, then Dallas. I said above, 3 in a row would be an amazing stride forward for this franchise, that’s all I want.

Every fan has a right to be frustrated, but we should have more targets than just Al.

^^^^^^^^No…no other targets……Al Davis makes the picks come draft time….and hires lousy coaches to coach players he should have never drafted.

No…..Al Davis is the ONLY target!

Yep, SC is HORRIBLE! Worst program in the nation. Pert near the Raiders of the NCAA. Only a complete moron would try and talk sheet about SC, but hey, if the shoe fits….

  • alisgod

But hey you’re a “real fan” and let’s go Southern Cheaters…oh i’m sorry I guess they aint going to the BCS game are they?

Oh BTW, what’s it like paying for Reggie Bush and his family to be considered #1 in the country?

Well hell then, lets all just be blind sheep and support him no matter what and just accept the fact that the organization is a total joke.

Where is USC in the BCS poll, havent seen the new one yet.

I know you didnt just say go UCLA….

  • Thec07

USC sucking probable has a lot to do with the underclassmen from the team leaving and starting or making serious contributions on sunday…..
How many teams last year lost the starting LB core to the NFL?

USC starting a freshman QB, and losing OCO to coach wash.

FYI, i would take the USC freshmen over JRUSS any day of the week…. He is way more prepared thn JRUSS even as a freshmam….

I am sorry did i say jruss, i meant BRL, or black ryan leaf…

Every time I log on to this blog, you’re always commenting about USC. This is a Raiders Web Blog, dude.

Go to the USC sight and cry ove there.

I’m sure the committee for the Holiday Bowl is selecting SC for their Bowl game.

See what happens when you stick out your chest and proclaim USC as the BCS champ even before the season starts, I’m laughing my arse off typing this right now.

Go back up the blog and read you might learn a little something. Like the fact that Alisgod brought SC up in the first place and TBone jumped in. I never said they would be BCS champ. You are not only a complete fool but a liar as well.

  • alisgod

I guess it’s kinda hard to win championships when you got caught paying players and their families…I guess that does make it a little hard to try and recruit the best to come to your school. Where was SC before Carroll arrived? What was their losing streak as the Bruins biatch before that? Who’s really blind and have selective memory here?

  • Thec07

BRL, 3 years in still looks like garbage…..
Josh Freeman tampa bay rookie looks really good. Doesnt have name brand WR’s but got it done against GB….

  • Dude

What number post was I crying about SC by the way? Oh, I wasnt? Your just a flat out liar? Ok, got it.

  • Raider Dell

You said prior to the College Football season “USC was the best team in College”. Turning the argument around towards me is not going to solve the comment you said a few months back.

I guess, I’m going to just pretend I didn’t read your comment and I will ignore your comments about USC for now on.

  • Thec07

Black Ryan Leaf deserves to get cut. Preist you called me out a couple of days ago to respond to BLR’s weight…

    Josh Freeman is 6’6″ 248
    BRL is 6’6″ what 280? 290? 300?

Fact, cant argue BRL’s dedication he came in out of shape, and is still out of shape. How do you do that as the “leader” of the raiders, and face of the franchise?

Fact, doesnt know the playbook… when did he get the playbook, last week sometime???

  • Dude

Didnt know they got caught paying players. Must have missed when the NCAA punished them. Damn!

Yep, the SC football program was never good untill Pete Carroll arrived. Never went to any Rose Bowls, never had any Heismans, never won any NCs. They were just garbage. LOL! Another quality post by Alisgod.

You guys are demanding too much from this team.

Again, its about competing. Can the Raiders compete for 4 QTRs. Give me a string of competitive games…then we can start talking about winning on a consistent basis.

K.C will be an unbelievably tough game because of the Raiders poor coaching and personnel decisions.

I just hope that the players can come out and compete after a bye week!

  • Dude

Who leads the Raiders in carries and rushing yards??

  • Raider Dell

Liar is such a strong word, how about using the word “factually incorrect”. This will provide any other comments to be observant of facts when we comment back to your comments.

For you and Aligod….Liar is the correct word. Thanks though.

  • alisgod

Sorry is he starting? Yes or No.

When you gonna man up and admit you were wrong. he never started this year at any point even the last 3 games and I believe he is healthy no? Your argument was that he would start. Then you even went as far as to claim when healthy above but nothing in your fcking quote said that.

Who’s the fcking weasel and liar now?

This just proves how much of a pussay and weasel you are….dont thump your chest on here if you aint ready to defend it and be a man about it.

Again, if you gonna claim you wear black in the nfl, then learn to be a man about it.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Where’s Brandon Myers? He’s 2 for 2 in passes thrown his way. Hopefully Cable rediscovered the 2-TE set during the bye week.

Did Russell and the receivers work together at all during the bye or did they just go home and chill out?

This K.C game is no slam dunk. K.C has been more competitive this year than Oakland this year. The Raiders better bring their version of the A game.

And play Chaz Schilens as many snaps as possible. We’ve seen enough from the rookie experiment.
