Tim Brown on Russell, Davis
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 at 11:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Some comments from former Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown on an ESPN podcast with host Jeremy Green about quarterback JaMarcus Russell and owner Al Davis:
Is JaMarcus Russell the answer?
When they drafted this kid four years ago, three years ago, whatever it was, I didn’t think he was the answer then. I was asked my opinion unofficially by someone in the organization and I told them, after being at the LSU-Notre Dame game in the Sugar Bowl and watching this kid, I just didn’t think that he had what it took to come into the NFL and be productive right away.
Now if you give him three or years to learn, and get this game under his belt, yes, but he had to come in and play right away. He missed most of his rookie year, and played sparingly because of holding out, so I just don’t know. The best you’re going to get out of this kid is Daunte Culpepper and that’s nothing to shake your head at. Daunte was a pretty good quarterback in the league for awhile and is still holding on, trying to make some plays. But the flip side of this is you could get Akili Smith. And that’s the problem you have. If he’s not willing to work, and put in the time and effort to be the best, then it’s going to be very difficult.
Do they need a veteran quarterback along with him?
At this particular point, it’s going to be JaMarcus’s job. It’s his job. So you can’t think about the quarterback. But what you can think about is surrounding him with veteran players, and when you look at his surrounding cast, I think Antonio Fargas may be the oldest guy that he’s playing with, and that’s just not a good thing. When he comes off the field, they look at each other like, `What happened?’ Nobody can explain what just happened, and I think that is the biggest problem that he has is he finds out what the problem is on Monday morning.
Antonio Fargas would indeed be quite a bit older. He is Justin Fargas’ father _ the actor who played “Huggy Bear” in the television series “Starsky and Hutch.”
I even think he needs a veteran receiver on the field with him, someone who says, `Hey, man, this is what I saw. This guy is rolling up coverage, this guy is doing this’ on this play and that play. That’s the kind of interaction a quarterback needs on the field because when you’re learning stuff on the sideline or on Monday morning, it’s not going to do you any good.
Can Al Davis bring the Raiders back to respectability?
I think he can, man, but it’s just going to be impossible for him to do it by himself. Before, when Al was able to be on the field and have a presence, I mean, he had a presence. When he walked out there, everybody tied their shoes a little tighter and made sure, well, now he can’t do that. He needs to have someone to kind of do that kind of stuff for him. He can guide it, but he’s going to have someone to be his eyes and ears and feet while he can’t come down on the field any more.

priesttj, you give new meaning to the phrase “village idiot”. Seriously you’ve taken it to a whole new level!
November 11th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
I bet Gannon would have more valuable insight on JaMeatloaf. We’ve already heard B Esiason weigh in.
Tim doesn’t want to burn a bridge with the old goat so he sugar coated it.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Tim still pining for a job huh! Everyone with any kind of sense knows and sees that Russell has no help. They re asking him to do something very few QB’ could pull off. The Ryans and Flacco’s have vet. help on every play even if they can’t read the defense pre-snap someone else can. The recievers are vets who know what to do under pressure. These babies have no freakin’ clue. And Fargas just got back.
Everyone looks at Russell to lead this crap and it would take a vet of Peyton Mannings stature to pull that off. This kid is still learning how to put his pants on the right leg. But I swear if you give this kid the right tools and support he will make you a winner. I gaurantee it!! Get an Oline and playmakers and give him a veteran QB on the sideline to help him adjust to what the defense is doing to him. And he will win for you…………..period
He has NONE OF THAT!!!
November 11th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
Thats all he needs to do is lose some weight???
Does he need to know his playbook? Guess not..
Does he need to be a leader? Guess not..
Does he need to stay awake in meeting? Guess not..
Does he need to have some pocket presence? Guess not..
Does he need to work on his mechanics? Guess not..

Russell just needs to lose some weight and get some WRs that can catch the ball.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Louis Murphy is a smack talkin cry baby. The talk would be okay if he would make more of an effort to catch the ball.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Poor tj!
Theres just not enough hours in the day to preach your nonsense eh tj ? Dont ever mention AL’s meddling just blame it on the players & coaches.
Poor Black Moses, the coach is just putting too much on his shoulders….oh wait did you say Kiffin was holding this kid back? Turn him loose right tj? Let the kid be great, right tj?
Poor tj!
November 11th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
I dont think it was suger coated even though it came from Tim Brown. It sounded pretty legit and right on the money. The problem is, who can Al trust with being his eyes and ears and not get burned in the end. Will it be a tough minded coach or a go get’em GM who can take charge and make his team instantly competetive ie: atlanta, Miami.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
Hopefully Chaz Schilens can do and be for us what Miles Austin has done for the Cowboys.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
According to Cable our WR’s are so good we didnt need to sign Chambers & J Walker isnt getting a chance so I don’t know how anybody can say JaDumbell doesn’t have the weapons.
Help me out tj…..oh wait you turned on Cable like you did Kiffin, nevermind tj…oh AL has nothing to do with this right, tj?
November 11th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Well Russell just needs to lose 7 lbs and he’ll be a “Bonafide Qb”, right 504 ?
November 11th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
Louis Murphy is what a rookie is supposed to be, average at best. He shouldn’t be in this situation and neither should DHB. The QB they’re playing with has no confidence in them and for good reason. He’s learning himself and has a long way to go. He cannot help them, when he can’t even help himself.
If Chaz and Fargas had been here all year long things might be better. But you need veteran WR’s to help him when he’s under pressure. To make in game adjustments to win games. No QB in football is being asked to do what Russell is asked to do. Win with confused babies. That includes the HB’s except Fargas.
In time it will change but right now it is very ugly. Once they get it figured out they will be very good but that will take time.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
We didnt need Chambers. HE wouldnt help or hurt this team but and hes def not worth the money or the chance.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
Bootleg J. Russell more and let him pound the rock head 1st no QB slide. He is the heaviest back we have. If he gets a head of steam up with that fat ass he could pick up some 1st downs. If he gets hurt we have back-up’s that can perform if needed.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
Rancho why would a savvy veteran WR help our team? Damn I dont know what I was thinking! DHb has ZERO Td’s, JLH has ZERO Td’s. You are right we dont need any help. And JaMeatball doesn’t need any help either, good call Rancho we have 6 or 8 guys on offense alone going to the pro bowl, right?
November 12th, 2009 at 12:02 am
Watch out he’s 40!
lol
November 12th, 2009 at 12:03 am
Alisgod made the most sense when he said and I agree, they want them to all grow together and bringing someone else in would slow that process. It is obvious that they want that. The problem has been that the two WR’s that could’ve made a HUGE difference Chaz and JLH were both hurt. Even their Wes Welker type got hurt “Nick Miller the DB killer”. That more than anything is what caused this passing game to get this ssssslllooooooww start.
But “Black Moses” will soon appear at a stadium near you. Dress rehearsals are still under way. Previews this winter and show premiers next season with sold out dates in early Sept 2010 get your tickets NOW!!

wow. nothing in that statement excites me.
End the Jabustus experiment.
November 12th, 2009 at 12:06 am
Mista,
Tim Brown makes a good point about Russell should have veteran WRs to help him during games. Walker should be one of the starters………Russell needs to lose about 20 lbs so he can evade a pass rush and buy more time in the pocket……….He needs a new coach. Cable is a joke.

So your telling me that Chambers is the answer? You have got to be kidding. This season is over already there is no point to bring in any reciever that has had the same season as dhb jlg and murphy before he got to KC.
November 12th, 2009 at 12:16 am
I think this will be Bush’s last season as a Raider. He goes down just as easy as Russell. Forget the Tampa game. We got conned by that game just like we got conned by Cable being the coach that game.

I had decent hopes for this year for development and and gaining some confidence I’m hoping that can still be realised. Nothing wrong with a little humor.

Cable has already been told he wont be back next year……..this is fact
Al is contemplating stepping down
Now we must do these things
Hire Bill Cowher as GM/Coach
Install a 3-4 defense
Find a mid level vet QB
Get rid of Kirk,Farglass Russell, Kelly,Warren,Brown,Eugene,Green,Carlisle,Barnes and many others.
Draft Terrence Cody or Brandon Spikes with first pick
November 12th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Poor cable…he’ll never coach another NFL team after his tour is done with the raiders. Career line coach. oh well…im ready for a freash start. This team is toast.
November 12th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Yeah Oakglen is sharp! He predicted we run the table or at least win 8/10. And then theres the “Bonafide Qb” gaff on Russell. Cables “trajectory”….wow how does he doit tj?

November 12th, 2009 at 12:27 am

Translation of Tim’s comments:
Russell sucks.
Al Davis sucks.
Like he’s going to come right out in say it. He could have easily said that Russell was going to be good, and that Davis still has his fast ball. Other ex Raiders do. But Tim didn’t. Figure it out.

B, the point is, if Michael really wanted to be white, he would have just worked with mostly white artists. Every last album michael made, right to his final work, put an emphasis on soul and r&b. Sure, he’d do a few radio tracks that were korny and wannabe rockish, but the rest of the tracks were pure soul. why does he bother if he wants to be white? Why doesn’t he just go all out toward white music, appeal to white audiences? wouldn’t have hurt him financially, either. he kept doing black music to his dying day because that’s what he loved

MR has this boy ever seen a MJ video, or his entourage? If he says they’re all white he certainly doesn’t know him. His cook was black his doctor was black his most loyal confidante was black. Nurse black Background singers black. Musical director black. Most of the kids that came to neverland black.
My belief is this humans are humans, no matter what color. My early militancy was due to the way my particular race was being treated. That’s what I refused to accept. I felt I was as much a human being as anyone else. And I wouldn’t accept anything less.
But I studied my history and took 12 people to Africa when i was in college for two weeks and named my first born after an AFRICAN tribe. We went over to in ‘77 the Festac festival. To Lagos Nigeria for two weeks. Led a movement to rename East Palo Alto Nigeria. Then the 80’s appeared and everybody went for the condos and the BMW’s and lost sight of the reasons we did what we did. I got disinterested and started my family and the rest is history.

I totally agree with Tim Brown that we need to have some sort of Veteran presence on offense. I know we are trying to build the new guys, but they should have some leadership around them. Guys to put people in their places like Ellis was doing on Defense.
Until they change something the offense will continue to be offensively bad. Either bring in some Veteran help or change QB or both. You can’t have a QB who ain’t putting in the time throwing to receivers who don’t know what they’re doing.
I do believe that Jamarcus could develop into something halfway descent (which is miles above where he is now) if he actually put in the extra time for real. But, I don’t see him ever doing that so from my standpoint he’ll be a major bust forever.

You gotts do what you gotta do bro. Its all good!
November 12th, 2009 at 9:41 am
I’m working on a first round bye, and I don’t need bogus trades and a million roster moves to get there.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:48 am
So what are we REALLY looking forward to this weekend?
Personally, I’m just looking for signs that we are developing into a real team, lol!
Will the coach improve his play calling?
Did the QB and WRs come in early and stay late?
Will we play to our strengths and run the ball 30 times plus per game with a some play action passes?
Will our LBs remember the first week of training camp instruction and stay in there gaps?
Raiders 5 KC 2
November 12th, 2009 at 9:48 am
Making trades for the benefit of another FFL player is very bogus. Shame on you.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:49 am
Does anyone want 2 pick up DHB for their FF?
Lmao
November 12th, 2009 at 9:51 am
If Mitchell is such a hitter and has great speed, why not try him out at the LB position? (Works for me on Madden)
November 12th, 2009 at 9:54 am
But head coach Tom Coughlin made it clear on Wednesday that anyone who wants to criticize the team should criticize him.
“I thought it was perfectly clear, but let me express it so no longer does anyone else receive any type of blame,” Coughlin said. “The blame goes right here. That’s all. . . . I’m responsible for all of the decisions that are made with our football team.”
……………….
Take notes Tom Cable. That is a real coach.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Jhill,
I think we would all be happy if the team looked better coming out of the bye than they did going into it. If so, they should win, because this Chiefs team is real bad, and Haley is about the only coach who was ever outcoached by Tom Cable on a Sunday.
I would like to see Chaz play, and get at least one clutch 3rd and long catch to move the chains.
I would like to see DMac hit the hole and not fumble on the initial contact.
Russell…….just look like you care and complete a few passes.
And no And-1 style fake FG’s!!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 10:09 am
“He needs to have someone to kind of do that kind of stuff for him. He can guide it, but he’s going to have someone to be his eyes and ears and feet while he can’t come down on the field any more”

I think Timmy is still sending smoke signals that he wants the job.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:28 am
And again Broncossuck…I would have prolly traded C.Johnson 2 you 2 if the price was right.
It’s like Ralph Wilson loaning Al Davis 400,000.Help a brother out. AND…with the emergence of the Bucs new QB…I think Cadillac can run for 100 yards a game and this Mike Wallace guy is a rookie who Rothlisberger is going 2 more and more.Sooo in my way of thinking I got 2 players who may go far instead of 1 player who’s real nfl team is not playing good and other teams might start stacking the box against him

November 12th, 2009 at 10:39 am
Vegas,
What’s the odds of Cable lining DHB up in the slot to get him matched up on a S or LB?
How about the chances of him getting a reverse?
November 12th, 2009 at 10:41 am
AND Dakota mom…I got clinton portis in case of injury 2 Cadillac. 3 players for 1 proved 2 me the408Raider is willing to do whatever it takes 2 win just like Big Al in the true spirit of the Raider Org. the408Raider put his money where his mouth is,imo

November 12th, 2009 at 10:47 am
“Can Al Davis bring the Raiders back to respectability?”
Tim Brown’s answer SHOULD have been: “Yes, if the players stqart listening to Al. For example, Al said I should reire a Raider. But no, I signed that idiot deal to play in Tampa and Mr. Davis forced me to retire at the Hyatt with no team support. Point being, listen to Al.”
November 12th, 2009 at 10:48 am
I like the idea of Shaugnessy starting. I’d also like to see Bryant get the nod over Warren.
Where is the young LB and nickle corner?
I still say we need to find a way to get Huff, Branch, and Mitchell on the field at the same time.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Who are we developing at RT and RG?
November 12th, 2009 at 10:50 am
What happened to the cover 1 defense that was used in week 1? I like using this D w/ our fast db’s.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:51 am
“he’s going to have someone to be his eyes and ears and feet while he can’t come down on the field any more.” – Tim Brown
***
his name was Randy Hanson. he got fired and left the building with a broken jaw
can we beat the Chiefs without Greg Ellis, Nick Miller & Ricky Brown ???
November 12th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Thanks Jhill…As you and I both know its only half-way over. And Josh Freeman came in as a rookie and BEAT THE GREEN BAY PACKERS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!.The kid didnt back down in his 1st nfl start!!! The emergence of Josh Freeman,as they are saying here in Tampa Bay after 1 game lol,is gonna open it up 4 da Caddy!!!.I see 100 yards a game 4 da Caddy…and Chris Johnson is gonna be under a microscope of other teams vying 4 a playoff spot, imo
November 12th, 2009 at 10:51 am
What about Mitchell as our SLB? Can’t do worse than Brown, Alston……..
November 12th, 2009 at 10:53 am
well ya know I definatly dont want you down on me Dakota!!!…and I hope the beautifull MRS. is doing as well as can be expected!?!?!?!?
November 12th, 2009 at 10:56 am
4eva,
It is going to be hard for Cadillac to rack up a lot of yards with the giant fork sticking out of his back.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:56 am
I too like Shaunessy starting. When Ellis comes back keep Shuanessy on the line with Ellis and move 310 SuperSeymour 2 DT.Kick out T.Kelly and put the young, strong as a bull Bryant kid in there Now THERE is a D-line that could really inflict damage 2 any O-line,imo
November 12th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I don’t know about MItchell as a LB, DMAC.
I’d prefer a a Nickel defense that utilized Branch and Huff’s cover skills, with Mitchell’s ability to support the box.
I’d love to pretend to be a GM who could come up with something like that, but I just know we ran a bunch of 3 S sets last year with Baker (Thanks, Dell!) and Mitchell can not be any worse than Routt.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:57 am
What chew talkin bout Vegas lol
November 12th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Jhill,
DHB in the slot? You remember who is calling plays right?
Now a reverse, I can see that. But how about a fake-reverse? I have seen them run a few reverses this year, and not once have they faked it.
The Saints will run one, and than fake it later in the same game. We can’t even get Cable to switch it up halfway through the year.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Yeah I like that nickel coverage w/ Mitchell, but I loved that Cover 1 that was used in week 1. It should be used more often, since we have fast DB’s.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Mon, Nov 9
Williams had 16 carries for 56 yards in the Buccaneers’ 38-28 win over Green Bay on Sunday.
Advice: Williams only has two touchdowns this season, but the Bucs have been behind so often it’s hard to stick with the running game. Perhaps with Josh Freeman taking over the starting job that will change, at least occasionally.
(STATS, Inc.) Sun, Nov 8
Williams carried the ball a team-high 16 times for 56 yards in Sunday’s 38-28 upset win over Green Bay.
Recommendation: Williams led the team in rushing on Sunday, but Derrick Ward was arguably more productive, catching three passes for 54 yards with a touchdown. Rookie quarterback Josh Freeman played well in his first career start, throwing three touchdowns, which bodes well for Williams and the entire offense.

And all this talk of Josh Freeman…I can see the Bucs with their HUGE O-line start playing smash-mouth b/c of Freeman Thye buzz here in Tampa Bay is Freeman is the 1 player that will make ALL the others work as 1.Man Jmac please be serious as we are
November 12th, 2009 at 11:07 am
morning gentlemen, ladies
had a dream this morning. I was lined up at wide receiver for the Raiders. DHB was in the slot. At the snap, the DB opposite myself who was in tight man-to-man grabbed me and locked his arms around one of my legs in the most blatant hold imagineable. I looked at him and started to laugh. I looked back at the QB and JRuss waiting on us. I told DHB to slant over the middle while I tried to extricate myself from the DB’s hold. DHB just stood there unmoving.
I finally managed to pry the DB’s hands apart and scoot a bit upfield before the DB tackled me by the ankle.
So I’m sitting there on the ground but my hands are free, JRuss spots me and sends a floater my way which lands directly into my hands. First down Raiders on the four yard line!
There were no flags on the play but the play was reviewed for ten minutes to see if it was a catch. We all took the ten minutes to go outside and have a smoke.
Back in the huddle JRuss was animated and in good spirits. We knew we were going to score on the next play.
I woke up.

I want him to succeed to but, 2 TD’s 11 int’s and a ton of fumbles????
If I were to imagine Jamarcus taking a huge step backwards at the beginning of the year, I never would have imagined it would be this bad. And the team is no worse through 8 games than they were last year, just him.

4eva: where is everyone?
Lonetree: I’m here..hi sweetie. How’s the bursitis?
No small wonder that the exact same “going to bed now, bye bye” or “missed you” group knows the least about football, especially the Raiders?
Yep, Raider fans…slow, pathetic, and needy.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:48 am
I hope Tom Cable learned his lesson from the Chargers game, and has Jamarcus throw dumpoff’s and short passes and isn’t afraid to run it 3 times and punt.
When we did that (the 3 runs and a punt) the game settled down, and the D got a turnover to setup our only TD.
But I’m sure Tom will have Jamarcus dropping back 2 of the first 3 plays.

“Die hard fans”?
“Most passionate fans in the NFL”?
“Support the team, won or lose”?
Oh wait.

WRONG LOSER..it’s a football blog. OAKLAND RAIDER football blog, LOSER.
What YOU mean to say is “Yes, I’m a loser. I have nothing except hanging out online, ALL DAY, discussing stupid crap that has nothing to do with football.”
