Cable mum on deployment at RB, WR
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 13th, 2009 at 1:41 pm in Oakland Raiders.
News and notes from Friday’s practice as the Raiders prepare to host the Kansas City Chiefs at the Coliseum:
– Raiders coach Tom Cable predictably played it close to the vest regarding the use of wide receiver Chaz Schilens and running back Darren McFadden.
Schilens missed the entire first half the season with a broken fifth metatarsal on his left foot, while McFadden has been out for the last four games following arthroscopic knee surgery.
First, Cable tried to float the idea that he hadn’t even thought of how he would use the running backs before cutting to the chase.
“I just think for this game, coming out of the bye, it’s better to wait ‘till we start the game,” Cable said.
Asked if it was important to keep things quiet against a divisional foe in particular, Cable said, “Absolutely.”
Said McFadden of his role Sunday:“I don’t know. It’s a process you have to go through. You don’t go to the bottom and jump right back to the top. You’ve got to go out there and work for it. Right now I’m just working myself back in.”
– Defensive end Greg Ellis was limited during practice, and according to Cable, was on the field for “40 to 50 percent of the work.” He was listed as questionable and will be a game time decision, Cable said.
Listed as out were wide receiver/return specialist Nick Miller (tibia), linebacker Ricky Brown (ankle) and wide receiver Javon Walker (hamstring), none of whom practiced. While Brown is out of his cast and the stability in his ankle is good, Cable acknowledged the possibility of injured reserve for the strong side linebacker.
Left guard Robert Gallery, right tackle Cornell Green, McFadden and Schilens all practiced without limitations and were listed as probable.
“I feel really good about how all four of those guys have worked, had had full work load pretty much the whole time this week,” Cable said. “Really it’s green light, ready to go.”
– Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, as delicately as possible, addressed the reality that the Raiders had better beat the 1-7 Chiefs considering the next three opponents _ Cincinnati, Dallas and Pittsburgh _ are a combined 18-6. The Cowboys, a Thanksgiving Day game on short rest, and Steelers games are on the road.
“It’s important to start off and get on the right foot . . . and we’ve got a stretch of four games here that are going to be pretty tough if we don’t focus in, so I think this is the prime opportunity,” Asomugha said. “It’s a team that we’ve beaten before and we’ve got a chance to start off on the right foot.”
– Cable didn’t seem bothered by Walker’s request for a release, as reported in Friday’s papers by Steve Corkran.
“I think I respect it, the fact that he has an injury right now doesn’t help is situation, but you know, you want your players to want to be out there and to want to be on the field, so, it’s OK,” Cable said.
– As a member of the Patriots, defensive end Richard Seymour was never under .500 through eight games, although New England was 4-4 on threee different occasions during his tenure. Yet Seymour was wearing a broad smile and politely fielding questions Friday with a 2-6 record.
“Well I mean, I’m fine. I can play in any situation. I mean it really don’t matter. I enjoy the game and I enjoy playing football,” Cable said. “So it doesn’t matter, really, the surroundings. I can go play anywhere.”

No front office.
No one who has the balls to tell Al he was wrong.
EVERYONE WHO HAS, has gotten fired.
What front office personell has been fired that stood up to Al? That is actually news to me.
RICHOCHET: Kiffin, right? Gruden, in many minds.
Jhill: Thought we were talking front office as in GM or “in Al’s ear” guy.
——————————————————
quote: “Kiffin refused to start Higgins and Schillens at the beginning of last year. That is why he was fired.”
Is that YOUR qoute? I thought it was because of a series of things including Kiffin trying to get the Arkansas job.
RICHOCHET: That was an exact Al Davis quote. Now, you and I both know it was a lot more than that. (IMO, beginning of the end was the kiffin firing of ryan, Al’s rehiring of Ryan, Kiffin making the obvious screw you Al statement of not wearing Raider gear at the Senior Bowl that started the beginning of the end for Kiffin)
Jhill: Agreed. I actaully didn’t put much thought into the college coaching BS. Why would Kiffin try to bring his dad here if he was trying to leave. Al over ruling Kiffin on firing Ryan is what ended this thing, IMO. Put all the BS aside, and you can really see Lance wanting out after that.
——————————————————-
Signing Kwame? arguably the dumbest signing of the last decade.
FORCING the HC to play Kwame? for 12 games? How can that not hurt the team?
refusing to let the HC discipline/bench suspect players?
So you’re telling me in one breath that Kiffin had the balls to not start JLH, Chaz, or Henderson, but he didn’t have the balls to say FU Al and bench Kwame?
RICHOCHET: Kiffin was gone after game 4. IMO Kiffin was already in lame duck mode, maybe even in sabotage mode (76 yard FG try? into the wind? You KNOW that was a “pour salt in the wound” dig against Al, right?) and likely left in Kwame, knowing it shined badly on Al, while refusing to play the guys who might have helped.
hard to tell..because he sure made some suspect decisions.
Both seemed to be “in your face, Al” decisions.
Jhill: Way more likely to believe that it was a Kiffin decision to slight Al as to why he kept Kwame in there. I have to believe that Henderson was Al’s guy all along and Kwame was a guy that Cable wanted as one of his ZBS projects. Just like Barnes. If Al had drafted Kwame, I would have no problem believing that. But I think Kwame post Kiffin was just another bad personell move by Cable.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
It’s always a move like not letting Kiffin bring in his DC that tends to fugg things up. That’s why I blame Al the GM. Al the Owner is willing to spend money and clearly wants to win, so I can’t be to mad at that. But Al the GM is flat out AWFUL in that he can’t get out of his own way.
Control of the roster and picking his own staff would have kept Gruden here. That and $3 million at the time is VERY believable. Like he told Gannon, bringing this franchise back would make them legends. Was he wrong?
Same thing with Kiffin. It was a no lose situation for him, why would he want to leave? Because Al fugged him with Ryan, that’s why. I agreed with pretty much everything Kiffin was doing year 1. I have NO problem admitting that.

Interesting poll taken by Oakland Trib/BayAreaNewsGroup papers, for the last week.
QUESTION: WHERE DO YOU LAY THE BLAME FOR THE OAKLAND RAIDERS WOES THE LAST 7 YEARS?
88% Al Davis
9% players
3% coaches
But hey, I’m sure those 40,000 or so responses don’t realize that Al is just preparing for “the future”..right?
Lol…yeah, let’s go with that one for a while.
^^^^^^^Hey! Can’t believe 88% actually have their heads on straight and realize Al Davis is the problem!
Quick…someone send this poll to Raider headquarter and Amy Trask.
Once they get it….they will trash it and say FU to the fans!
They don’t give a rats a$$ about the fans in Raider Nation….least of all….you Priesst! LOL
November 13th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
I dunno DKnight,
This has to be killing the old man. Al Davis is the biggest Raider fan out there, so I don’t think it is about that at all.
The simple problem is Al thinks he has a lot more talent than he actually does. Evidenced by the fact that he employs these basic man schemes on offense and defense that simply says my guys are better than yours.
Get a GM in there who is not just a puppet for Al, and watch how things change.
Now with that said, I don’t buy for a second that Davis is mandating who plays. I think the initial plan was for DHB to be the 3rd WR, in theory, with JLH and DMAC in the slot, and Schillens on the outside. JLH getting blasted and losing his confidence, coupled with the suprised Walker surgery and Schillens injury left us with 3 young guys at WR.
Even with the team getting healthy, will Cable play to the strength of the team and run the ball 30 times a game? Most of our passes should be off of PA and across the middle. Mix in some reverses to DHB and play the kid in the slot.
CMon Cable! Sometimes you have to perform IN SPITE of your circumstances.
November 13th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Wow same old crap, but one question why “delicately” say you had better win against the chefs? Come on!! someone on this team needs to drop their balls and start taking some accountability for the teams poor play and show TRUE signs of turning this joke of a franchise around!! What a bunch of fireless cupcakes!!

Can’t argue with that. Al loves his Raiders, and he wants to win more than anyone. His fatal flaw is that he wants the credit when they do win, which prevents him from putting people in charge that know what they are doing.

re javon walker: “you want your players to want to be out there and to want to be on the field, so, it’s OK,” Cable said.
j walker has said repeatedly this season he is ready to go & nothing was wrong with him. he repeatedly got no playing time while other WR’s produced little to nothing. now that he is reportedly injured & asking a trade, cable implies that he didn’t want to be on the field.

I just wish Al Davis would stop wasting his time, our time and Javon’s time by keeping him on the bench. Schilens and Walker would be a really good receiving core. Hell, Al should have traded a 1st round for Boldin and reunited the 2 college teammates from Florida State. They would have been re-energized and hungry. Throw in a healthy Schilens and you’d have a great 3 WR set but I’m sorry, this all makes too much sense. Al would have fired me for cause.

You moving to SD?
November 13th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
KoolKell – Yup. Don’t worry…I’ll NEVER be a Charger fan haha. In fact, I hate the Chargers more than the Broncos and Chiefs but I love the city.
November 13th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
I like the City and area too. Great weather, great food, great beaches and the US Navy!
We need reasonable posters on this blog though, 24.
“If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation…want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters…. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”
November 13th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
KoolKell – Regarding SD…exactly. The story goes that my Grandfather was in the Navy (Ken Jones) and he met my Grandmother in San Diego as she was born and grew up there. They eventually moved to Santa Cruz where my mom was born and I was born at O’Connor Hospital in Santa Clara so I’m kind of going back to my roots ironically.
As far as reasonable posters…the fan base, reasonable or not is just as dysfunctional as Al Davis right now. We’re all hurting by this losing and its depressing. Until something positive happens, the Raider Nation is in a state of chaos like its the end of the world. Thats just the passion being destroyed by the one man alot of people looked up to. Its a crumbling empire. Every great nation eventually falls.

Now back to the Raiders:
Now if this is a year dedicated to developing young talent as some of you have suggested, then why isn’t Scott, Matt S, M Mitchell, or M Bush starting?
November 13th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Raider O,they may not be starting but they are getting significant playing time which is the right way to do it IMO. Those guy’s are the future of this team and are getting valuable experience while watching very good examples demonstrate what being a pro is all about. Fargas is great for MBush and DMC. Ellis and Seymour are high quality vets and Michael Huff has seen the light. Which means thoose youngsters provide quality depth.
It’s a shame Russell has no one to look up to and inspire him. Neither does the young WR’s because JLH and Chaz are really still learning. They’re just more prepared to compete at a consistent level than the two rookies.
It has wreaked havoc on our passing game or the lack thereof. Yeah next year this time we’ll have what we hope is the payoff but for right now it flat out stinks.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Our Drafts have been good in late rounds, but our 1st day picks have not been productive.
-Branch, Chaz, M Bush, Murphy, Scott, and Matt S are 2nd day picks.
-DMC, DHB, and JR have been Deadly to our offense in terms of production.
JR has 15 TOs, DMC has done nothing since he was drafted, and DHB has 5 catches in 8 games!
November 13th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
M Mitchell needs to play more.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

We need a better HC. We can’t develop talent or win with Cable.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

When’s the last time the Raiders developed a Quarterback?
November 13th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
post 43 JR has nobody to inspire him? Hows’ about Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith, and Joey Harrington. The likliness of ending up like them , would inspire me plenty!! Not too mention his phat contract. The problem is job security, he knows it’s his job and will be regardless until the day he is cut. The benching was a joke, had we had a better backup, he would have lost his job, but thats why we don’t have a better backup. Although I do agree the Raiders 2nd day picks are better!! I also agree Mike Mitchell should play more, why draft him? What drives me mad is the O-line, being the coaches baby is aweful!! Major problem for offensive woes, also the fact that we haven’t a #1 reciever, and that Todd Watkins see’s the field, he’d get cut anywhere else. And that Jamarcus has no cadence at the line causing in the D line blowing up the O-line, and the main reason for all the false starts!
Raiders beat chiefs in the Toilet Bowl! 21-17 on a good day, but chances are 17-13

I know this will wrinkle some feathers but the one guy that bothers me the most in terms of his lack of production is DMC. Because he plays the position that great players mostly have instant success. it takes WR’s and QB’s a few years and especially QB which is the single toughest position to play in sports. While HB is basically natural ability on display. DMC has tremendous talent and we just haven’t seen it. It should not have taken him more than a couple of weeks to have a huge impact on this team. He can make DC’s focus on him and take a ton of pressure off the passing game. He is an unbelieveable weapon and we’ve yet to exploit it. And it frustrates the hell out of me. If you watch CJ for Tenn. DC’s stay up all night trying to devise a plan to stop CJ and he still rips them up. Well DMC is bigger and stronger and almost as fast. But he has had little to no impact on this team.
I wanted CJ because we already had MBush and we needed to trade down and get more help on the Oline and I almost got through to the brass but Kiffin being a SEC fanatic loved DMC. I got shot down and the door slammed. But DMC can be as effective for us as CJ is for Tenn. if he can just stay healthy and focused. CJ has proven that he is everyting I said he was which I’m happy for him. But right now I just want DMC to stand up and be counted. Stop falling over his own feet and on those screens READ THE DAMN BLOCKS.
I promise you if he would slow down and let the blocking take form and read the defenses as CJ does and then let his speed take over in open field. He’d be much more effective.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Not only Mcfadden’s lack of production but his injury problems are both huge worries, we need a veteran Wr bad next year this is gonna be 2 yrs in a row of the worst wr production since they started throwing the forward pass.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
Quiet as kept I’ve been watching some very respectable QB’s struggle under the same conditions that Russell is under but everyone makes excuses for them. Cutler threw 5 int’s and the entire time the commentator was making excuses. Inexperience at WR was his premise same thing with Alex Smith no Oline and unfamiliarity with WR’s. Jake Delhomme same thing they make excuses. Eli Manning same thing no Oline. But with Russell it’s all his fault, there is somethjing very wrong with that. Same conditions but they all get a pass except Russell. Who’s playing under the worse conditions of any of them.
So we’ll see now that some of those have been removed.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Hey 16!! are you out there? I might have something for you I’ll know more tomorrow.
If I get them, I’ll come in here tomorrow night and let you know how to get them.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
We could have had Aaron R and Calvin Johnson. Why would you trade Moss for a 4th rd pick over Aaron? Gallery draft killed us too. That was the best draft in 10 years, and all we got out of it was a good G, and a solid MLB!! We just don’t draft well in the 1st RD.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
WenzhouRaider, point taken, but it is what it is.
However I did like whatI saw last year from that trio, Russell, Chaz and JLH. Throw in ZMiller and DMC you have a very talented offense as far as skill positions go. But it would’ve taken all year for them to become what we need them to be and now we only have half of the season. So we’ll see.
IMO Chaz, ZMiller, JLH, Murphy and DHB is not a bad recieving corp if all parties are functioning properly. Add DMC, Bush and Fargas in the mix and you have a very competitive offense. Finally we get to see it.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
Raider O, can’t argue with anything you say but these are very young players, their careers are just beginning. 2 years from now you could be saying just the opposite.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
The same thing were being written about Nnamdi and Huff and especially Gallery wh ight be the best ORG in the AFC. I keep saying that Tim Brown was being called a bust midway through his 2nd season.
Cliff Branch used to get booooed at home. Someplayers just struggling early in their careers. Eli Manning was vilified in NY up to 8 weeks before he won the SB. Think about that at midseason fans wan ted him hung from a tree and by January he had won the SB.
I don’t say these things to mak excuses but you must be very careful when dealing with young extremely talented players. Drew Bress was shown the door just 3 years ago.

There are two things I really get a kick out of when I read these blogs… First and foremost it’s the fact that so many other boneheads like me can still feel so passionately about a team that’s been so extraordinarily inept for such a long time… I suppose being a Raiders fan is like being a parent – just because your kid screws up a lot you still love him and know there will be better times ahead… And secondly – and certainly most enjoyable for me – is the sense of humor you guys have. Some of the nicknames for JaBlubber are just hysterical… Keep the faith boys – one of these days Al will smarten up, hire a GM and we’ll finally make best use of all these juicy draft picks we’ve been squandering for so long…

Good morning Nation!!!
Hey 4eva, I need you to help me root on the Georgia Tech jackets here in a few hours. I put a bunch of money on them, I just love the way they play and put up points.
They run the triple option, with a guy who runs a 4.3 forty as one back, a future first-rounder bruiser as the other back, and a QB who is a freak athlete. I wonder if their version of the option will be the next “Wildcat” in the NFL the next few years.
Anyways, they need to beat Duke by 11 points or more.

In fact, I would be all right if the Raiders drafted Joanthan Dwyer in the first-round, reminds me a lot of Frank Gore, minus the multiple knee surgeries.
He just kicks the crap out of the Defense.

Vegas,
Great fight today!! I love Boxing, but I miss watching heavy weights. Last heavy weight I liked was the young Iron Mike.

My friend keeps telling me that Al will draft Taylor Mays next year. If Al was going to draft Mays, would he have drafted M Mitchell in the 2nd? Branch is playing well, and so is Huff, so where does Mays fit in. If we draft Mays, then he would be the 3rd Safety in this decade drafted in the 1st RD, and the 7th DB. 2 of these DBs drafted in the 1st are on the team!
No More DBs Al!! I don’t care if Mays is 6′3, 230, and runs a 4.3! Don’t draft a DB in the 1st!

O,
It should be a great fight, and the odds are that it will end with a knockout or TKO. This town has a cool little buzz about it with the fight, but everyone wants Manny to win to setup a super-fight with him and Mayweather.

Good Morning Sports Fans!
Why do I feel like it’s not even football season?
What are the chances of the Raiders bringing the fire back tomorrow?
Big ridiculous hits from our LBs and Ss?
Powerful running game?

Because Al thinks 1 great DB is better than 4 D-linemen, and the league’s fastest receiver is better than 5 O-linemen.

Vegas,
We need to draft some bad ass LBs.
Rd 1 – LB/DT
Rd 2 – RT
Rd 3 – DT/LB
Rd 3 – LB
Rd 4 – RG
Rd 5 – LB
Rd 5 – OL
Rd 6 – DL
Rd 7 – DL

I DO think we need a nickel corner though, so a DB in rd 2 might be an option.
No way we draft Mays with Branch and Huff playing well enough to keep Mitchell off the field.
We might need to think about trading Huff to get Mitchell on the field.
But realistically, our DB situtaion is far from settled.

Jhill,
I think we really need a 3rd DB badly, so a 2nd or 3rd rounder spent on a nickel corner could really improve the team, especially on 3rd downs. Can’t see a safety early, but I wouldn’t put it past Al to draft some fast S in the later rounds.
The next games will really determine whether we need to draft a RB, IMO. I’m beginning to think neither of our 3 RB’s are very good, although Darren has a chance the next games to build on something.
I like the idea of drafting a “natural” RT in round 2, like Loadholt last year for the Vikes. But we will probably draft a LT in the first round, move him to the right side and watch him struggle.
November 14th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Vegas,
I understand the pessimism, but Al rarely drafts a position that isn’t actually a need, IMO. He may screw the pick like DHB over Crabs, but he does actaully take positions that we need.
DHB and Mitchell were good examples of need picks, but bad execution by the GM. Not knowing what we had in Huff, and losing Baker and Wilson made S a need pick. With our leading WR having something like 30 catches last year, WR was also a need.
I firmly believe that you take a potential impact playmaker as high as we were in the draft. With not much to choose from, I wanted Maulauga or Percy Harvin at 7. I really had no problem with a S in rd 2 other than the fact that no one had heard of him.
Oh well …

I can’t see us taking a RB.
We need to settle on one guy, and give him the bulk of the touches. DMAC needs to be on the field, IMO. I just don’t think he is being used correctly. Get this kid in space and DCs will need to account for him. Line him up in the slot, throw screens and flares out of the backfield, and run him to the edges.

Jhill,
They have tried all those things with Darren so far when he has been healthy, he just hasn’t done a whole lot with it. They split him out wide opening night, threw him a short pass and had room in front of him and he dropped it. Drive-killer. Same with his fumbles, and h ehas been injury-prone. That leaves Fargas, great backup, below-average starter, and twinkle-toes Bush, who will probably leave after this year anyways.
If Darren doesn’t do anything the next 8 weeks, RB would be a need, IMO. But a big, physical guy, not a super-fast guy. I want Jonathan Dwyer from Georgia Tech.

Cable is Mum because AL hasnt told Cable what he will be doing in regard to the RB’s yet. By Sunday @ 1:00 Cable will have full instructions.
Just win despite it all baby!
