Ellis on field

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 13th, 2009 at 10:52 am in Oakland Raiders.

Defensive end Greg Ellis was wearing his helmet and joining his teammates on the defensive line as team sessions began Friday.

The defensive line didn’t go through any actual drills as special teams worked on kickoff and punt returns, instead meeting as a group with line coach Dwaine Board, shooting the bull and at one point laughing uproariously.

The offensive line went through it’s normal drill route, but also had a moment of levity when right tackle Cornell Green took a orange cone and flung it toward a fence.

For the first time in at least a few weeks, coach Tom Cable opted to let line coach Jim Michalczik run line drills and instead stood at the opposite end of the field, alone, watching the special teams return drills.

All previously injured players expected to face the Chiefs _ left guard Robert Gallery, Green, running back Darren McFadden and wide receiver Chaz Schilens _ were all present and accounted for. Absent were return specialist/wide receiver Nick Miller (tibia) and linebacker Ricky Brown (ankle).

Wide receiver Javon Walker, who failed to complete practice with a strained hamstring Thursday, was wearing a sweat suit and baseball cap, apparently not practicing.

More to come later . . .

    repost –

do we have enough veteran leadership to bring along the youngsters?

does Al allow the coaches to coach the schemes that they believe in and the players that they feel give us the best chance to win, both now and in the future?

so many distractions with kiffin and now cable. makes you wonder if a coaching change isn’t looming in the offseason, which means a new playbook, terminology, lack of trust, etc. starting all over will not help the youngsters, with or without playing time under their belts. thats why it is important to get a qualified coaching staff in place to begin with and give them 3 or 4 years to make this a competitive football team. right now we’re a laughing stock and we’ll continue to be one as long as Al is cheap with coaches, power hungry and drafts potential over production and speed over football IQ

“shooting the bull and laughing uproariously” they must have been talking about the last 6 seasons. Yeah real funny.

I’m through with Johnny Lee Scary. Find someone who isn’t scared of contact to return punts. Same thing goes for Holland. Their killing us in field position.
Let’s try DHB to return kickoffs. Let’s see what’s all the hype with his speed that Al loved.

this guy is obviously not in the team’s plans, present or future. I’m guessing we’ll cut him in the offseason, since next year is uncapped.

I think that may have been the plan all along when we restructured his deal. Al trying to save a buck

    1. No – we don’t have any veteran leadership on the offensive side of the ball. That’s hurting us right now, but, my point was that this young team is growing up together the hard way, just as did the young Rams team that eventually won the superbowl. That was a young team across the board, with almost no veteran leadership. They took their lumps together and eventually won together. That’s Al’s plan. Whether or not these players pan out remains to be seen.

    2. Don’t get me wrong – your point about the authority or lack of authority of coaches is well taken. But, I’ve always believed that stuff was overrated. Tom Flores was handed the team he was going to coach. He knew his role. He had no ego, and he coached his tail off. And he succeeded because he had good players.

    3. The bottom line is that Al needs to put good players on the field. Period. All the talk about the Raiders having SO much talent is bogus. We have some proven talent and a whole lot of players with “potential”. But potential doesn’t mean squat until it comes to fruition.

    4. If we don’t have good football players on the field, it doesn’t matter if Bill Walsh or you coached this team.

    5. This team simply has too many guys that have known nothing but losing since they entered the league.

Guys like Namdi, Howard, Morrison – they need to quit being little biotches and complaining about “distractions” and instead get into someone’s face when they make mistakes, and DEMAND better plan.

I like the 3 guys I just mentioned, but, they are a prime example of players who have grown accustomed to LOSING.

That has to change. Those guys are all too nice. We need another guy like Seymour on this team – someone with rings to get into people’s faces while we’re down 30-0 in a ball game and raise hell.

You guys can sit here and claim that the Raiders will lose until Al Davis is gone.

    That’s fine – that’s your perrogative.

    I happen to disagree.

  16. DMAC Says:

    Agreed. Very much agreed.

Look, the bottom line is that if these young guys truly can play this game (including Jamarcus), then we’ll be fine.

If they can’t, we’ll suck some more.

  19. DMAC Says:

I want to agree with you SNS, but these young guys haven’t shown me anything. In particular DHB. There’s rookie WR’s making plays every weekend, that were drafted in the later rounds.

  20. RaiderRockstar Says:

you know it’s sad that we have an undrafted FA wide receiver Nick Miller on the shelf until Week 11 or 12 just to use for kick returns…

we left a roster spot open for Ricky Brown too, who was projected to be out at least 8 weeks, possibly the season…

I would have placed them both on IR. signed Derrick Brooks & Amani Toomer and never looked back

  21. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Two posts back Jerry was writing about the inadvisability of starting two rookies as receivers.

Not to blow my own horn but I preached that in pre-season.
And you’re wrong Jerry, it didn’t start after JLH was hit. It was actually announced by Cable, and repeated, before the season started.

However, even with two great veteran receivers we’re not going anywhere as long as we start a quartback who can’t read the defense, can’t see the field, who after three years still hasn’t learned Cable’s very thin playbook, who couldn’t hit an aircraft hangar if he was inside it, whose footwork resembles an elephant swimming, who moves so slowly in the pocket that we’ve all got time for lunch, and who couldn’t see or hear someone coming on the blitz if they already hit him once and we’re coming back for seconds.

    DMAC:

The problem is that you can’t compare any of the other situations in the league with this one. None of the other rookies are in a situation where there are 2 of them lined up at the same time. Combine that with the fact that you have a QB throwing to them who has barely over 20 games under his belt.

so, you’ve got an inexperience QB who’s already got so many things to learn, throwing to 2 guys who seemingly are lost out there at times.

That is a BAD combination and so it’s like a bad cycle. Because of what I mentioned above, at times, it’s damned near impossible to say who was at fault on any given play.

So, I say have some faith in the fact that what you’re watching right now is almost unprecedented and hopefully, it will all pay off.

I think it will. I think when DHB catches his 1st TD, he gains that much more confidence.

I think when JRuss throws that TD to him, HE gains that much more confidence in HIM.

And so on and so on. . . . .

^^^^^^^Thats right….and thats why I’m not an Al Davis lapdog like you who actually “cares” about him and his ego and his welfare.

Try DHB or Murphy at KR/PR? Whats wrong with you people? They’re All American Pro Bowl type WR’s and the last thing we want to do is put them in a position to get injured. They’re too valuable and if we lose one of them, what are we going to do and who are we going to turn to? Can you imagine our passing game without them? Sheesh!!!

With that said…I’m done joking around. I’m going back to work.

Dear CBS: Why assign Gus Johnson to such a dreadful game?

    (On second thought … )

Dear CBS: Thanks for assigning Gus Johnson to such a dreadful game! I might actually flick over to it now.

By the way, I am declaring this game ungamble-able. The Chiefs are the only 2009 team without a rushing TD; Oakland has given up 13. The Chiefs have given up 12 passing plays of 40-plus yards; the Raiders have a QB with a 48.3 rating. The Chiefs have amassed 2,231 yards and given up 3,172; the Raiders have amassed 1,793 yards and given up 3,086. The Chiefs have given up 30 sacks; the Raiders have turned the ball over 25 times. I’d say this was the worst game of the year, but remember, Oakland plays in Cleveland in Week 16. That’s the Stupor Bowl. This is more of the Blew-Gray Game.

Now you’re running the all time weak copout of “Oh…NOW I have a life”. Losers always run that take when they whimper off..don’t you?
    =======================================

So, don’t try the whole “OK, now that you Ladies have a healthy team, no more excuses” crap on me.
That’s not gonna fly. Not now. Not ever.
There are no excuses when you suck. We’re not the only team with injuries. Have they hurt the team, and Jamarcus in particular? Hell yeah. If you don’t acknowledge that his development as a young QB has been hindered by a team playing 2 rookie receivers for only the 2nd time in the last 30 years in the NFL, then you really are naive.

RICHOCHET: ahhhh the “I’m NOT GOING TO MAKE EXCUSES” which is immediately followed by AN EXCUSE. The “no excuses when we suck” FOLLOWED BY “INJURIES HURT THE TEAM. DEVELOPMENT IS HINDERED”..are you so stupid you don’t realize you just contradicted yourself?
    ==================

But, with all that being said – the record is what it is. Period. The Patriots won last year with a QB that hadn’t even started in college.
So, there are no excuses for the Raiders losing to the Jets 38-0 at home.

But hey, let’s not blame him right?

  50. El Tato Says:

I know Higgins play scared, but what I see too is that he is capable of turnig a 5 yards pass in a 70+yards TD, he did it last season:

    - short slant against Buffalo: 84 yards TD
    - short crossing route against New England: 56 yards TD

Just see his College highlights, ever single pass he catches is a short pass he turns in a big play, he is good after the catch:

After watching how these first 8 games played out, it’s clear the Raiders have absolutely committed to living & dying with the youth of this team.

But, I think Al is firm in his belief that the lumps they take this year (literally, from losing & from the media) will only have them that much more prepared for the following season.

    No secret.

You have scouts who are paid to report on good prospects to draft.

AL IGNORES THEM, and makes stupid decisions.

You have coaches who detail who is playing better than who.
AL IGNORES THEM, and overrules them.

quote: “Kiffin refused to start Higgins and Schillens at the beginning of last year. That is why he was fired.”

All the money spent on Walker? Ignorant.
Signing Kwame? arguably the dumbest signing of the last decade.
FORCING the HC to play Kwame? for 12 games? How can that not hurt the team?
refusing to let the HC discipline/bench suspect players?

The list is long…and no surprise.

Al Davis is killing the Raiders.
    Killing the morale.
Killing the list of coaching prospects.
Killing any desire of other players/agents entertaining coming to play for the Raiders without a huge payday.
Killing fan enthusiasm/willingness to spend their money.
Killing the teams chance to compete with his archaic schemes/play calling…

    on and on and on.

Right about now I would be much happier with Chris Johnson than Dmac, sorry McFadden fans. It appears that BHP was right on that one. Sorry Dakota.
    _______________

BHP was right on with Chris Johnson, and I have given him props for it several times.

Still, no one would be talking about Chris Johnson right now had he been drafted #4 by the Raiders. In your heart you know it to be true.

Did you see that Lakers-Suns game last night…killed ‘em. muhahahaha

You know that wasn’t a slight against you personally. If DMac had remained healthy and on a better team, who knows?

BTW if Bynum is putting up 25 and 15 every night the rest of us are screwed.

    Ok now I am out.

    No front office.
No one who has the balls to tell Al he was wrong.

EVERYONE WHO HAS, has gotten fired.

What front office personell has been fired that stood up to Al? That is actually news to me.

RICHOCHET: Kiffin, right? Gruden, in many minds.

    ——————————————————

quote: “Kiffin refused to start Higgins and Schillens at the beginning of last year. That is why he was fired.”

Is that YOUR qoute? I thought it was because of a series of things including Kiffin trying to get the Arkansas job.

RICHOCHET: That was an exact Al Davis quote. Now, you and I both know it was a lot more than that. (IMO, beginning of the end was the kiffin firing of ryan, Al’s rehiring of Ryan, Kiffin making the obvious screw you Al statement of not wearing Raider gear at the Senior Bowl that started the beginning of the end for Kiffin)

    ——————————————————-

Signing Kwame? arguably the dumbest signing of the last decade.
FORCING the HC to play Kwame? for 12 games? How can that not hurt the team?
refusing to let the HC discipline/bench suspect players?

So you’re telling me in one breath that Kiffin had the balls to not start JLH, Chaz, or Henderson, but he didn’t have the balls to say FU Al and bench Kwame?

RICHOCHET: Kiffin was gone after game 4. IMO Kiffin was already in lame duck mode, maybe even in sabotage mode (76 yard FG try? into the wind? You KNOW that was a “pour salt in the wound” dig against Al, right?) and likely left in Kwame, knowing it shined badly on Al, while refusing to play the guys who might have helped.
hard to tell..because he sure made some suspect decisions.
Both seemed to be “in your face, Al” decisions.

Oh man, lol..after all that, I post..and an apology?

    Geez..you guys are no fun

    *sigh*…ok…let’s Starbuck

Don’t do Starbucks, gives me the shyts!

My post to Dogg simply replayed the scenario in my mind. I don’t know how, or do I care to know how to work the archives to pull that up. I have to imagine no one actually sits down and scrolls through all the posts to find something unless it was a really recent.

You were posting to someone else, I butted in, slapped you around (IMO), lol, and because I felt I slapped you around, called you a poster who I frequently slapped around.

I admit there are 3 sides to every story, but the point is you weren’t talking to me, and I shouldn’t have called you Dude.

    Man enough to admit that.

    Now let talk football:

Yeah, save the football talk, dude!

Interesting poll taken by Oakland Trib/BayAreaNewsGroup papers, for the last week.

QUESTION: WHERE DO YOU LAY THE BLAME FOR THE OAKLAND RAIDERS WOES THE LAST 7 YEARS?

    88% Al Davis
    9% players
    3% coaches

But hey, I’m sure those 40,000 or so responses don’t realize that Al is just preparing for “the future”..right?

Lol…yeah, let’s go with that one for a while.

^^^^^^^Hey! Can’t believe 88% actually have their heads on straight and realize Al Davis is the problem!

Quick…someone send this poll to Raider headquarter and Amy Trask.

Once they get it….they will trash it and say FU to the fans!

They don’t give a rats a$$ about the fans in Raider Nation….least of all….you Priesst! LOL
