It’s Gradkowski _ and a new lease

Bruce Gradkowski will replace JaMarcus Russell as the quarterback of the Raiders, coach Tom Cable said following practice.

Moments before the club was confirming along with the Joint Powers Authority a lease extension at the Coliseum through 2013.

I’m assuming they’re not related . . .

More to come . . .

No way Mike Singletary would be allowed to do his thing in Oakland, like he’s doing in SF.
No way any Coach in Oakland is allowed to develop anything organically in the locker-room between players and coaches. The stuff that produces fidelity, and emotional investment, esprit d’ corp. All the shyt that’s lacking in Oakland. All because Al Davis is shining the light on himself. Up in his office playing fantasy football with the Raiders.

People said the same thing about Gannon. That he sucked before he started playing. I’m not calling Gradikowski is the next Gannon. But, right time, right opportunity. It’s worth looking at. Also, we have already proven that Oakland is not able to develop a QB so why draft another one in the first round.
Obviously the problem is the GM and Owner. So given that constant, let me comment anyway.

Gannon was a free agent after starting 12 gms with K.C and going 5-5. Not cut as the 3rd string QB in Seattle or Cleveland. So any talk about Gradkowski or Frye morphing into a journeyman super star is simply wishing upon a star.

So what should the Raiders do? Find a Matt Schaub lite or a Brett Favre capable talent that is buried on the depth chart on a team right now. A guy like Tyler Thigpen, Brian St. Pierre Drew STanton or Tavaris Jackson. Or, I would pursue a mid stage starter like Campbell or Marc Bulger. Maybe bring in 3 guys like that and let them all compete. I would then draft a QB in the 5th or 6th round

    That’s what I would do.

How Jamarcus reacts to this move will decide his future with the Raiders. If he keeps doing what he is doing, not putting extra time in with Receivers, not watching extra film etc. Then he will be cut at the end of the season. If he becomes Charlie Fry’s shadow and helps Gradkowski prep for the Bengals while working on his game then we will get a real franchise QB. Now we will see if he wants to be a Raider or not.

People don’t want to admit or acknowledge that the real problem is the Owner/GM. Beginning, middle and end. And this is not a hater here talking. Its simply looking at the body of work over the last 20 years.

Its easier to talk about coaches and players because they are the only pieces that can be replaced…Now with what? Well that question brings you back to my 1st paragraph above.

    Russell should be cut immediately

This is great news, JaMarcus can’t be treated like a stubborn child anymore, this is the NFL buddy so get with it.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

If you can’t beat out Gradkowski and Frye…you are not NFL caliber.

If Russell has any chance…he has to learn from his mistakes and get with an organization that will push him and surround him with true leaders in the ownership, coaching staff and teammates.

I would cut Russell and move on with it.

I’ve seen Locker play a bunch of times. He jumps off the screen. He doesn’t have 1/4 the talent around him that Bradford, McCoy and Clausen have to work with (I wouldn’t even consider drafting Tebow before the 3rd round).
He reminds me of a cross between Roethlisberger and Steve Young. He’s at least as athletic as Young but closer in size to Roethlisberger. He isn’t afraid to throw the ball into tight coverage (unlike JaMarcus) and makes a lot of plays like Big Ben.
Dude, you still didn’t even state the obvious, he has a strong arm but lacks accuracy, he is a junior, limited game experience in college, who is he similar to in the NFL? Guess, JABUST. Thats my point. We dont need to pay another Junior QB $40 mil guarantee money.

    SnB offense defense specialteams,

I say let him “earn” his $$ on scout team for the rest of the season. If we cut Russell and Walker at the end of the season then we can either pick Bradford in the 2nd or 3rd round or bring in Bulger from the Rams and pick up Dwayne Bowe after he is cut from KC.

  • Jeff Garcia wanted out because he was convinced Russell would start no matter how bad he was. That’s now not the case. Garcia was lied to. Al Davis didn’t want Garcia sitting on the bench and creating a controversy with his mere presence, and especially didn’t want Garcia playing, and calling is own plays and building drives, and hence, perhaps, the Raiders winning. So he told Garcia he wouldn’t play, knowing Garcia would want out for it and then Al wouldn’t look like a bad guy for releasing him. Now we’ll see how Gradkowski is sabotaged. For starters, Heyward Bey will be his primary target. I’m looking at offensive formations and plays that leave Miller covered, cause Gradkowski will be looking for him. We’ll see. Whatever the case, Al will sabotage him, one way or another.

  • crister

i guess once the a’s finish divorcing oakland, the raiders will look to make their stay more permanent beyond 2013 and fix up that stadium.

now of course, gradkowski’s going to start against a pretty defense whihc is most likely demonstrate why he’s been up till this point a journyman qb and we’re going to end up at square one all over again.

You see what I’m saying Willie?

  • Tebow? Brennan? T. Jackson?

You guy have to be joking! There was a reason Russell was drafted #1 and highly thought of after his pro day workout. There is a reason Russell showed flashed of good QB play last year.

The problem is that he has been handed a HC/OC that IS FUKIN CLUELESS and WRs that can’t catch!

Give Russell a coach he respects and FEARS and he might become something. All those other guys are never going to be NFL QBs…Russell + a decent HC is still our best hope IMO.

I think the guy stinks right now, but much of that blame goes to circumstances.

We have a HC that couldn’t get a fukin HC job with a low level college team destroying our young players right now.

  • extension through 2013….HAHAHAHA!!!! Yeh, there’s a commitment. Anyway….

Yes all those coaches failed. But they were all sattled with horrible QB’s.

Good to see others out there who see what I see in Brennan.

Dont think the Seahawks will give up Teel seeing as he’ll be groomed to take over Hasselbeck. But he’s a good’un.

A vet back-up ALSO traded for…isnt a bad idea either. But name some names of who you guys are thinking of!
Is Brennan on the roster or the practice squad? Anyway, I would have to say no to that guy. Redskins are struggling and he can’t even get to be the backup….and if he’s the QB of the future there…they won’t trade him.

Mike Teel….Seahawks cut Gradkowski to draft that kid. We should have drafted Teel. Nope, we are starting the 3rd string QB that got cut from them.

Get a 2nd stringer with some potential (Thigpen, St. Pierre, T. Jackson, Josh Johnson or Volek)…..bring in a current starter that will be in free agency (Campbell, Bulger, Pennington) and move on.

Draft a QB in the 5th round

Cut Russell tonight….release Gradkowski and Frye at the end of the year. Also fire the coaching staff and so we can root around in the rough looking for that diamond.

  • ColoradoRaiderFan

Brennan’s been on injured reserve since the last preseason game. He’d been the backup and was outplaying JaJason.

  • The coaches failed because they were hired to fail, ColoradoRaider. Give me a better explanation for 7 straight losing seasons, and Kiffin’s practically immediate dismissal.

  • SnB,

I might be wrong, but I don’t think the Raiders could cut Russell this season…his entire prorated bonus would come home to roost on this year’s cap. They can cut him next year without any cap problems, but not this year.

  • ColoradoRaiderFan

Guys like Billy Volek and Chris Simms are always considered great backups. Problem is they never do well in a starting roll.

LMFAO! What”s the penalty for braking the lease? Not being able to use the urine and crap smelling restrooms, 3 year extension. I’m laughing with you.

  • “Cut Russell tonight….release Gradkowski and Frye at the end of the year. Also fire the coaching staff and so we can root around in the rough looking for that diamond.”

That dog won’t hunt anymore. 7 straight double-digit losing seasons, will pale against 16 straight blackouts.

    Too late for that SnB.

  • ColoradoRaiderFan

I think those coaches were average, but stuck with the owner’s choice of bad QB’s. Kiffin got fired because he know how bad JamarcASS was coming out, that and he was about as mature as my 5 year old. I don’t think any coaching staff could win with JamarcASS.

  • If you think firing Cable, cutting Russell, and bringing in a fresh face at Coach is going to substantially arouse the fan base. I think you’re being naive.

    Been there, done that!

  • DKnight007

    haha…lease extension until 2013 huh??

Sheesh….no new stadium for the Raiders in the Bay Area for at least 10 years??!! Ugh….

Here come the Los Angeles Chargers!

    Here is another youtube pearl:

Now seriously: I’m shocked!!! No intelligent man speaks in the way Russell does. If I was responsible for his hiring in any capacity, after a two minute conversation I would know beyond any doubt and once and for all that he is unqualified for anything but MAYBE a job as an operator in the local car wash. I would not need to see any CV or football highlight reel or anything to come to this conclusion. Seriously, I mean it. NFL quarterback? Leader?? Gym rat??? Face of the franchise??? You’ve got to be kiddin’ me!!

  • GG

I remember on RFnet I made a serious post about trading Russell while his value was high (just drafted) and getting a bunch of OLmen and Brennan.

I still stick by that idea. Man before my time haha
