Lease deal no surprise

More news and notes and observations following Wednesday’s practice:

— Considering the state of the economy and the Raiders current state of affairs, it’s no shocker that the club and the Joint Powers Authority reached agreement on a three-year extension.

It’s also an indication that for whatever rumors exist about the financial instability of the franchise under Al Davis, there isn’t a buyer lined up to purchase the club and move it to Los Angeles in the foreseeable future.

Also guessing the current rock-bottom status of the team in terms of butts in the seats somehow benefitted the Raiders in this deal.

Coach Tom Cable on the lease extension: “I think it’s important any time you know your hometown team is going to be there. As I mentioned when I got this job, we need to get this team going to give something back to Oakland so they have something to be excited about, for people to come to the games and buy the tickets and do all those things that you want as an organization. So I think it’s very important.”

Unless the Gradkowski news prompts a flood of ticket requests, blackout No. 5 should be announced Thursday.

— Read Cable’s words closely and while he won’t come out and say it, is there any doubt that all the talk of JaMarcus Russell’s poor work ethic is far more accurate than his passes on a given Sunday?

Cable’s been hinting at it all year and has never come out and say it. Given the way he’s talked up the dedication of Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye, he never had to. His message is clear enough without taking on Russell directly in the media.

Davis also thinks a crisis point has been reached, otherwise he would have never either reccommended it or gone along with it. It also gives him a chance at a future press conference to say how Cable erred when he benched Russell.

— Insteresting to see how Russell handles the situation. Ideally, he’ll stand tall, take some responsibility and vow to get better. If he gets good advice, he’ll do exactly that.

— Chaz Schilens will start at wide receiver in place of Louis Murphy, and not Darrius Heyward-Bey. The rationale is is Murphy and Schilens play the same position, although passing game coordinator Ted Tollner said the positions are essentially interchangable.

Russell has never had any sort of chemistry with Heyward-Bey, at least not during training camp or any regular-season games. He and Murphy seemed to have something going early, but in the last few weeks Russell couldn’t develop any timing with either man.
— Last week, cornerback Chris Johnson told media members not to forget that if the Raiders went unbeaten in the second half, they would finish 10-6. His sights were still set high on Wednesday when discussing what the Raiders must do on defense in light of the struggles of the offense.

“The defense is fine,’’ Johnson said. “What we have to do is with the turnovers we get, we’ve got to make sure we try to get in the end zone. Or not let the offense in the end zone and we win 3-0. that’s our mentality now.

“If not score, then set up a score. If we do that the rest of the seven games, I think we’ll be all right.’’

— Heyward-Bey has no plans on going Ochocinco on the Raiders in terms of being a flamboyant personality, but conceded the Bengals wide receiver has at least one fan who is also a Raiders fan.

“ It works for him. I know my mom likes it,” Heyward-Bey said. “So, whatever works for him, that’s good, because whatever you got to do on and off the field to make your play good, that’s what you got to do.”

— Still no sign of LB Ricky Brown or WR/KR Nick Miller, who didn’t practice. Nor did free safety Hiram Eugene, who had a shoulder injury.

The good news is veteran defensive end Greg Ellis was limited and could possibly play against Cincinnati, Cable said. Also, Michael Huff’s ankle which necessitated an MRI, is apparently fine. He made it through the entire practice.

To be honest TrueRaider it is easy to say who we should have taken after the fact. There are a number of QBBs not panning out right now and it is hard to understand why.

Brian Brohm was a good QB at louisville. Bush actually played aginst him for a HS Championship. Bush was the starting QB at the time. Brohm won the championship but not by much. He went to Louisville and played strong but when Bush broke his leg and no running game he really struggled. Many scouts questioned his arm strength and height. So you never know what QBs are really going to be that good. You can’t draft them all.

If there is any hope in Russel look at what Vince Young is doing now in Tenn. I do not buy Chad Johnson’s stuff that much saying how great Russel is but I will say this. Name me the last QB that was successful in NFL history with two starting rookie WRs with questionable hands?

Anyone else think we may actually take the Bengals by surprise this week?

    – Bengals are coming off a huge win over the Steelers. Letdown city.
    – Benson is out.
    – It’s a long road game for them.
    – Schilens should be back in the flow and will start at WR.
    – Gradkowski may be a huge improvement at QB and backup QBs usually do their best in their 1st game coming off the bench since teams aren’t as prepared for them and haven’t had a chance to pick them apart yet and they often inject an offense with at least some fresh optimism.
    – Raiders are healthier than they’ve been in awhile.

Not that it matters much in the grand scheme of the season. But it’s nice to steal a win every once in a while.

Hey Dakota,if you despise Al Davis for taking down our Raiders why don’t you despise George W.for taking down our economy. No,its easier for you to put it on Obama because of your issues and we know what it is.Eight years of nothing and you say nothing.Eight months and you say everything. Please as one Raider fan to another,GET SOME HELP and I mean that.

I certainly have no warm-fuzzies for Bush. I voted for him the first time, but not the second time. And please, re-post where I ever blame the current economic crisis on Obama.

I just have a problem with the programs Obama wants to put in place.

Economies go up and down, it is cyclical. It is not Obama’s fault he landed on a downturn and Bush had less to do with a dip in the economy than most libs would like you to believe.

Deregulation of the banking system occurred under the Clinton regime.

To all of you defending JaGravy ,for the love of god knock it off. Dropped passes? Really? You blame the receivers? Sure, they suck as well and have dropped their fair share of balls.

But…. What games have you been watching? Do you pay attention? To every 1 dropped pass there are 4 to 5 horrible throws. And I mean Pop Warner 12 year old throws. He is atrocious at throwing the damn ball, it takes him 10 seconds for a 5 step drop and has no pocket presence or feel for what is going on around him.

His faults outweigh the faults of others.

JaMarcus is VERY inaccurate, but our WR corp (without Schilens)is the WORST in the NFL

The bad news is once Schilens is back, JaMarcus will be in the bench. It looked like they had something going on between them.

And I fully agree with you that Al needs a quality GM to help him out.

My point is that if he does NOT do that, what then?

Are we all to slit our wrists?

No. So there are 2 choices, deal with it and just do your best to enjoy the games, or just don’t watch anymore.

    That’s all I’ve been saying all along.========
No, all you’ve been saying all along is you’re a mouse.

    No gumption to demand better.

Others, like you, stay in the shadows, just accepting whatever anyone does to them.

Uh, ok, Jim Rome. 1999 called, and wants their expression back.

  • The Problem a not JR. Why can JR throw a good pass to Miller, but not the WRs? Who is our WRs coach?
Look at our Play Caller, HC, Oline, WRs, WRs coach, AND THE QB!

  • Even Michael Irvin knows that, and he is an idiot!

  • JaMarcus Russell was never given a chance with the offense he’s surrounded by, and the play calling. The bottom line is, and his talents noted, he should not be throwing long passes yet. They should be emphasizing the run, and having JaMarcus work on high percentage pass plays like slants, short roll outs, screens, etc. I know that doesn’t play to his talents. But in the NFL smart quarterbacking is everything, and at LSU, considering the offense they used which relied on the deep pass, he never really got the training to run an NFL offense. He’s training on the job, right now. The problem is, he’s being trained with an offensive gameplan even more archaic than the bomb happy LSU’s. Frankly, I didn’t think either Russell or Quinn were that good to begin with, and thought we should have drafted Calvin Johnson or Peterson in ’07. I’ve read some reports that Kiffin wanted Johnson and some that Kiffin wanted Peterson. In either case, Al had other ideas.

  • I’ll be really disappointed if they change the playbook for Gradkowski and give him more high percentage, WCO type pass plays. Because the same should have been done for Russell. Russell and his agent should be angry, too, in this instance, and should consider some tricks up their sleeve to get out of this hell hole and get a fair chance elsewhere in the league.

  • JR is 22, he is young, talented, but he has:
    1- 2 Rookie WRs starting
    2- rookie WRs coach
    3- rookie HC
    4- rookie play caller
    5- no Oline

And according to a lot of reports, he has bad Work ethics.

  • The Big Banana

Raider O, it’s quite simple really. The problem is Al Davis. Beginning, and end of story. Coaches come and coaches go. Players come and players go. We have the same BS schemes and the same undermining owner and the same BS draft picks through all of it. For instance, it’s not DHB’s fault he got drafted that high and is being forced into the lineup before he’s even ready. And you know Davis is behind it too since he laid it all out for everyone and expressed his opinion on starting the rookies. He’s said it so no need to argue this point. Either fans are tuned into reality – and I believe most of us are, as evidenced by the attendance and the booing – or they are well-trained Al Davis puppies.

  • It’s hard to develop any QB with all those issues.

It’s 4 rookies, a very young QB who lacks exp, bad Oline, and a Defense that can’t stop the run trying to compete in the NFL.

    This Is A Joke!
