Branch rewarded for dominant performance
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 3:29 pm in Oakland Raiders.
News, notes and quotes from the Raiders practice facility Monday and coach Tom Cable’s press briefing:
– Strong safety Tyvon Branch was one of ? players given a game ball for his performance in a 20-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Branch had 12 tackles, 11 unassisted, a 12-yard sack, two tackles for losses a pass defensed and a forced fumble.
Asked if it was Branch’s best game, Cable said, “I don’t think there’s any question.”
Also getting game balls were quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, tight end Zach Miller, tight end Brandon Myers and place kicker Sebastian Janikowski.
Painfully slow connection speeds . . . will leave facility and complete Monday files from home later . . .

Cable and his multiple game ball crap is SO …..
Well it just bugs the shyt outta me. Game ball should have gone to ONE person, and that is Branch!
Branch is turning into a STUD! Him and Huff are BALLIN!
I’ll just be glad when Huff is allowed to play instead of lining up 20 yds off the ball.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:35 pm
I know Branch did a lot on Sunday, but it pissed me off to see him just stand there when Palmer stretched for the pylon for his first TD.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:38 pm
WCO, Shotgun, Pro-Set, doesn’t matter, JR could not put the ball through a tire at 2 feet.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Brandon Myers! Great play on STs.
Why can’t this guy get on the field in more two TE sets? The guy can catch and block…DHB can’t catch!
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Repost:
Fabian was 2005 draft pick. Surprise. A 4.25 40 in the combine caught AD’s eye. Who would have thought? lol
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Because Tony Stewart is actually playing pretty well. Funny how 2 of the guys who we drafted replacements for have stepped their games up big time. Meyers and Mitchell can’t get on the field b/c Branch and Stewart are playing really well.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Hey Exla…nice to see Bynum playing so well along side Pau isn’t it?
The Celtics are going down in June!

That may be true ExLA, but if you are going to draft a raw kid like that, why not go with a systems that TRIES to play to his strengths? Even if he only has 1 or 2 of them, play to those.
WCO ????
That was never going to work.

The old ass Celtics will not be playing in June. There is no reason to think that Orlando and Atlanta won’t take them out.
Lakers vs Magic. Lakers in 5.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Al probably only watched the wipeout of OSU by LSU and said “That’s my QB!” Should have taken Troy Smith at QB in the 6th.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Mitchell is going to be an absolute wasted pick. I guess it’s one of those good problems to have since Huff and Branch are playing lights out.
But what are we going to do with Mitchell?
He is NOT a FS, and he is NOT taking Branch’s spot.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Really what we need next year is a solid huge NT like the kid from Alabama, Cody I think. He is hybrid so he can play the 3-4 and 4-3 and so huge he is a run stopper. With Seymour, Bryant and if we take this kid we have solid rotation and we might be able to stop the run but we still need to take a strong MLB. We should focus our first 3 picks on DL, LB and maybe a CB to replace Routt. After that we focus on RT, RG, C, and Kick Returner.

Well if you want to go back that far, we really should have drafted AP and seen what a RB would do for a young QB like Walter. Draft AP, keep Moss, and hire a coach who would not try and put that trio in a WCO or Bed and Breakfast.

For the first 9 games, B&B didn’t look bad in comparison. LOL
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:55 pm
True,
If we dradt DT in rd 1, that means the end of the TK era in Oakland. Would have to. Bryant, Shaugnessy, and Scott have all been nice young additions to our Dline that will continue to get better. I think the key is Seymour. If for some reason he doesn’t come back next year, we 100% need to do Dline. If he does come back, I say LB, like we should have taken Maulauga last year.

Haha, copy/paste fail. My bad.

November 23rd, 2009 at 4:04 pm
I wish we didn’t take a first-round WR last time around, because Golden Tate would make a pretty solid compliment to Schilens.
Ndamukong Suh would be an intriguing pick. Especially if Greg Ellis doesn’t come back next year and our line needs a little extra help.
Brandon Spikes could be a monster in the middle, but I’m not sure if he’s fast enough for our system. Chances are either Morrison or Howard are leaving after this season, and I think Howard is more valuable to the defense at this point. Morrison keeps getting burned by running backs on short passes over the middle. A true SAM linebacker is needed, too. But Al Davis has never been one to take linebackers in the first round.

Schillens is a good player, but is a big injury concern. I really hope DHB comes on before the end of the year, or else we really may be looking at WR next year. Best case scenario, we have Schillens, DHB, and Murphy to develop. Ideally we can add a solid veteran to that group who can actually get on the field. I think it’s safe to say that the JLH and Todd Watkins days are about over.
Worst case scenario is DHB doesn’t develop and Schillens can’t stay healthy. That leaves us with Murphy and a HUGE need to take WR in rd 1.
Uggghhhh!

Anyone tell JR yet that he’s not starting anymore?
Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell admits it – it’s going to be kind of cool to face Ravens legendary linebacker Ray Lewis for the first time.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun, I promise,” Russell said. “You get a chance to play against some of the top guys in the NFL and bring your level up.”

7 DB’s on that list. Al’s always been a big believer in having shutdown corners and dominating, knock out safeties.
He had great success with George Atkinson and Jack Tatum, but that was back in the days when you could “clothesline” receivers coming over the middle. That’s why he reached for Mike Mitchell in the 2nd round. Must have reminded him of Jack Tatum.
But the rules have changed and you can barely touch WR’s now. Knocking guys out with helmet to helmet hits isn’t in the game plan anymore.
I wish someone would tell Al before they draft USC safety Taylor Mays next, instead of someone they can actually use.

Jhill,
I would move branch to FS, and play Mitchell at SS. I know Branch is playing great at FS, but I think he can even do better at FS. He can use his speed more, he ran around a 4.35, and we all one he can tackle!

===========================================
From what I’ve heard about Al and the draft process,(from the NFL network), is that the scouts do the leg work and grade out all the players before the draft. Then Al comes down before the draft and changes the order on the big board.
That’s how they end up with DHB ahead of Crabtree, Huff ahead of Haolti Ngata, etc.
They have people who are doing the work, Al just doesn’t listen to them.

The offense didn’t get any breaks this season. From Schillens and Miller going down, to JLH falling off the map. The injuries to Gallery, DMAC, and Green didn’t help at all. Even now it seems like Chaz will at best be 75% for the rest of the year.
I look at Chris Chambers and think how bad can Javon Walker really be? Why can’t he get any PT?
