Shane takes aim

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 2:32 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Much was made of the low-hanging video scoreboard which hovers above much of the sparkling new Cowboys Stadium.

Speculation was that it would be a target for punters who really got into one and could interrupt the flow of the game.

False alarm. Through five home games, the screen remains untouched during a game, punters occasionally nail it during warmups.

And here comes Shane Lechler, who kicks the ball higher and farther than anyone in the NFL _ No. 1 all-time in terms gross yards per punt.

“I don’t think he’s gonna hit it if he kicks it. I mean, nobody’s even come close except the guy that kicked it straight up in preseason to try to hit it,” Cowboys coach Wade Phillips told Bay Area reporters during what may have been the most lifeless conference call in NFL history. “Shane doesn’t kick ‘em straight up. We haven’t had anybody that had any problem with it.”

As it stands, the only in-game striking of the scoreboard came from Tennessee’s A.J. Trepasso, who didn’t even make the roster.

Said Lechler: “If that guy in Tennessee can hit it, I can hit it.”

Lechler got his first scouting report from 49ers punter Andy Lee, who said, “it isn’t that big of a deal. He said you could hit it but it’s going to take a perfect shot. He said you can hit it in pre-game all you want.”

Lechler said trying to nail the scoreboard in the event of a big point margin one way or the other would be selfish. If he hits it, it’s a do-over, which taxes the coverage teams.

“If we’re backed up and they have to run 60, 70 yards, it takes a toll, especially to have to turn around and do it right away,” Lechler said. “I’ve got guys, some of them play on offense and some of those guys are going to go right into the defensive series. It’s tough on them.”

However, if the scoreboard happens to get in the way . . .

“I’m not going to go for it. If it’s there, it’s there,” Lechler said.

With the Raiders in town Thursday, and the Chargers Mike Scifres visiting in the Cowboys’ next game, the moment of truth has arrived.

“If it’s going to get hit, it’s going to get hit within the next two weeks, I would say,” Lechler said.

Quick update: Richard Seymour practiced without limitations, a good indication he’ll be ready to face Dallas. Jon Alston is having “residual” post-concussion symptoms and is being evaluated. Isaiah Ekejiuba did not practice and is questionable. With Alston out and Ekejiuba questionable, Slade Norris, who has been cleared to play after a hamstring issue, could be placed on the 53-man roster.

More to come . . .

I have to agree with 4eva on this one, no contest. Billy Gibbons was Jimi Hendrix’s favorite guitar player (look it up) and I tend to agree with Jimi when it comes to guitar playing.

4eva knows. Billy played that axe regularly for many years, until Bo Diddley(RIP) gave him one of his trademark red “box guitars” which then became the guitar that Billy used for most live performances.

BTW Billy Gibbons appears on the song “Brokedown on the Brazos” on Gov’t Mule’s new album By A Thread. Sounds like Gov’t Top or ZZ Mule.

    Not just Cheny’s war.

“In the fall of 2002, Senator Hillary Clinton sought to discredit those questioning Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Vice-President Dick Cheney, and others who were making hyperbolic statements about Iraq’s supposed military prowess by insisting that Iraq’s possession of such weapons “are not in doubt” and was “undisputed.”
In March 2003, well after UN weapons inspectors had been allowed to return and engage in unfettered inspections and were not finding any WMDs, Senator Clinton made clear that the United States should invade that Iraq anyway. Indeed, she asserted that the only way to avoid war would be for Saddam Hussein to abide by President Bush’s ultimatum to resign as president and leave the country.”

Cincy is still scratching their heads.

Dallas will be a tougher win, but it is not impossible. The team has picked up some confidence but it is clear they still have their sense of reality that in order to keep winning they are going to have to play a lot better. Let’s hope Grad has that sense too and doesn’t get too over confident and tries to be hero. Keep your cool, stay focused and don’t try to do too much.

Run the ball, use Bush, start Chaz and Murphy, and start using Myers a little more on two TE sets. It’s not that hard to figure it out. The rookies are beginning to make themselves heard. Let’s hope DHB joins them soon. but as a 3rd WR. at least for this year…

Gobble! Gobble! Muthaf….! … Happy Turkey Day! and Remember, give thanks BEFORE the game, not after. Otherwise you might not end up giving thanks at all.

Web posted at: 8:51 p.m. EST (0151 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) — From the Oval Office, President Clinton told the nation Wednesday evening why he ordered new military strikes against Iraq.

The president said Iraq’s refusal to cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors presented a threat to the entire world.

“Saddam (Hussein) must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons,” Clinton said.

Operation Desert Fox, a strong, sustained series of attacks, will be carried out over several days by U.S. and British forces, Clinton said.

“Earlier today I ordered America’s armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces,” Clinton said.

“Their mission is to attack Iraq’s nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors,” said Clinton.

    Richochet,

I merely remind you that while you brag about how you own other people on here and they aer your LAP DOG. yet when they call your bluff, you wilt and citing the coliseum as unsafe for you.

RICHOCHET: Wrong, wife beater. I stated there IS NO GAME this weekend. Also gave directions where I’ll be. Also invited YOUR SORRY PUNKASS TO SHOW..Instead all you managed to do was make it clear you’re a scared sorry joke of a man who ONLY finds his balls when he’s beating on small women.

Is there any bigger coward in THE WORLD than a man who first states he’s afraid of every man out there, but then attacks a woman? And THEN says ’she deserved it because she cheated on my short fatass”.

    You’re a freaking coward. A punk. And a worm.

    ###########################

No I dont call La Kotex or you my lap dogs. La Kotex thinks he is tough and mock me for not wanting to endanger my family in my neighborhood. I wanted to remind him that when you live in teh 2nd worst crime city in the US (memphis) you best shut your mouth and move on when idiots and thugs cross you.

RICHOCHET: Ahhh..but YOU BEAT WOMEN, THOUGH..and that’s ok. Those big meany’s have you soiling your little panties, but when it comes to a woman, then you’re a tough guy, right?

    ##################
Get it? I doubt you do. you jumped in the middle of the argument and didnt know your shyt and began your tough talk calling me names. I thought it would be nice to remind you that you called mac your lap dog and you refused to meet him at the coliseum citing “his friends” as the excuse.

RICHOCHET: Again, wifebeater, I didn’t call you names. “names” indicates made up, no desire to be appropriate/appropos. Calling you a wifebeater isn’t a name. It’s a title that you admitted to.
Calling you a coward isn’t a name. It’s a title that YOU admitted to.
Calling you an unemployed stay at home, sit on his ass while his wife supports him, I.E. a scumbag, isn’t a name, it’s a title that YOU admitted to.

Now, while your cowardly ass would love it if I took the time, and spent the parking fee just to go out to the coliseum to “look for someone in whatever area of the parking lot”, personally I can’t be bothered.

I’m sorry, that confused you. I CAN’T BE BOTHERED..not worth my time. Drive out there? Pay for parking? wander around looking for someone? LMFAO..are you serious?

What I will do is take time out from my beer, while at the bar, up at the Englander, if Smac wants to follow through on HIS threats..gladly.
    That’s easy stuff.

You know..like when YOU see someone walking down the street, where you admit to quickly crossing the street..”just in case they’re scary’??
Or when you see a defenseless woman, and decide to backhand her across the face..because you feel “tough” around women?

    Yeah..just like that, coward.

Thought you might like that. Some of the songs appear to be just excuses to jam. If you get the album, there are 2 tracks that stand out to me the most: Inside Woman Outside Woman Blues #3 and Any Open Window. Both are smokin and take you to another place. The song Steppin’ Lightly is pretty smokin too. Hell it’s all good, some songs are mellower than others, but every song is excellent and very well written.

His unprovoked invasion of Iran is estimated to have left another million people dead. His seizure of Kuwait threw the Middle East into crisis. More insidious, arguably, was the psychological damage he inflicted on his own land. Hussein created a nation of informants — friends on friends, circles within circles — making an entire population complicit in his rule”.[7] Estimates for the number of dead in the Iran-Iraq war vary from 500,000[8] to 1.5 million.[9] Others have estimated 800,000 deaths caused by Saddam not counting the Iran-Iraq war.[10]”

It was NOT a Democratic or Republican partisan act but bipartisan.

They guy is 6′4, 275 and is a beast when healthy who brings alot of energy, passion, has a good work ethic, is smart, and is a good tackler.

The Raiders should sign him early and let him rehab and get healthy and watch him be a steal of a pickup next year.

I found it. Sure looks like Russell has some munchies tucked in his waistband during the game, in this photo. Probably sunflower seeds, or beef jerky.

The GOP and Republican party are greedy, evil, racist lying, hypocrites who with their corrupt politics caused this country to fall into another recession….

    —————————-
So are the Democrats with their multi-trillion dollar deficits. Nancy Pelosi flies around in a mini Air Force 1 and they have pork-barreled the budget to death.

Obama burns 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go to a save the tree rally.

    Good Night All.

Don’t waste your time talking about Dems “pork barreling” when god knows the amount of EVIL things the GOP and Republicans have done to ruin this country!

The situation is an embarrassment and disgrace to the entire operation.

Russell’s slothfullness, laziness, skipping of meetings, ignorance of the basics of the position AFTER 3 YRS IN THE ORGANIZATION….is an indictment of the incompetence that emanates from Raider HQ.

The ooaching, scouting and draft strategy. To pick a player so incompetent defies explanation and will stain the Raiders for years….like Leaf does to San Diego.

Tied up the financials and forced the Raiders to toss away another season.

    ABSOLUTE DISGRACE TO ALL INVOLVED!

Now we rest our hope in a QB that has very limited ability.

The Raiders will have to start all over again in the offseason.

You want to know the worst part? Just about every “domestic growth” mutual fund or annuity has money in their stock. Mutual funds make up over 50% of all money in 401K’s in the country. Haliburton is part of the S & P 500.

The American public has been hoodwinked into supporting the stock price. Anyone in here with a 401K probably has a small amount of HAL in their “portfolio”.

  114. Richochet Says:

Facts are Russell is lazy. Lazy as hell. Had a whole year to learn, and basically, seemingly, took the year off.

But honestly, isn’t the majority of the blame point at the coaching staff, and His Highness?

Where was the “MOVE YOUR ASS” that Russell definitely needed?
Where was the “You’ll be tested every week on how many plays you’ve grasped since the previous week”?
Where was the coach, ANY COACH, getting in Russell’s face and letting him know that his crap play is not acceptable in the NFL?
Where was the coaching staff telling him he WILL be in, first thing every morning, until he learns the playbook, like everyone else did in one 10th the time?
How is it possible the guy shows up after his first year, out of shape, and nothing is done?
THEN..shows up the following year, out of shape, and he basically gets his hand slapped?

No, he shouldn’t NEED this to be done, but he’s not the first young man who needed his ass kicked in order for him to do his best.
he’s honestly the ONLY YOUNG MAN WHO NEEDED HIS ASS KICKED, IN ORDER TO DO HIS BEST, who never had it kicked..even once.
No “warnings”. No “threats”. No “promises your ass will be riding the pine”..just coddling. Just ’sure would be nice if he did those extra things.

Lastly..to exemplify exactly what I mean as far as lack of communication??

When Russell was stinking up the joint? Worst qb in the league? Horrible sub 45 qb ratings? NO ONE SAID A DAMN THING TO HIM.
The guy, in multiple interviews, stated he felt he “was doing just fine” that he was “where I want to be” that it “wasn’t my play, but that other players needed to be where they’re supposed to be”.

Cable, Al Davis, AND Russell should all be ashamed.

It’s unfortunate that he needs a special type of structure. Hackett helped Gannon be one of the hardest workers in the league. Now Hackett can’t provide a “structure”?

Get out of here. Russell would never realize his full potential in Oakland, I will give you that, but he is so far from anything near “full potential”, that he deserves zero excuses.

    ZERO

  118. vegas raider Says:

Remember the INT that Russell threw in the first quarter of the Jets game. The one were he was being pressured and just threw it right to a guy about 3 yards from the line of scrimmage, and he returned it to the 5 yard line.

That was quite possibly the worst pass I have ever seen thrown. Seriously. There wasn’t a Raider within 5 yards, and knowing Jamarcus’ accuracy, he couldn’t have thrown it more perfect for the defender if he tried.

No excuse for that. Just straight crappy, awful, lackluster football.

  119. vegas raider Says:

I hope everybody is ready for the love fest Simms and Gumble are going to have for Bruce. As my boy does his thing, and has us in the game in the second half, Simms is going to go on and on, about his “heady” play, his “grit”, his “good decision-making”, and the “chance of pace” it is for the offense.
