Raiders HOF semifinalists
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, November 28th, 2009 at 12:39 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Former Raiders among the 25 players who named as semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010
WR Cliff Branch, 1972-85: Al Davis campaigns hardest for Ray Guy, Jim Plunkett and Tom Flores, but Branch is the guy with the biggest gripe. A regular-season and postseason star. Contemporaries included Lynn Swann and John Stallworth, both in the HOF. I’d take Branch over either one.
WR/KR Tim Brown, 1988-2003: There are going to be some surprised people in Raider Nation when Brown doesn’t make it in his first year. Like it or not, there are a lot of voters who look at Brown’s stats and don’t see enough wins or a defining moment. They consider him like a 28 ppg scorer on a bad NBA team. Someone has to put up the numbers, even if they don’t mean all that much.
If Cris Carter wasn’t a first-ballot pick, neither is Brown.
RB Roger Craig, 1991: Gained 591 yards, averaged 3.6 yards per carry, scored one touchdown and had no run longer than 16 years in an end-of-the-line season after piling up terrific rushing-receiving numbers with the 49ers. That wouldn’t stop the Raiders from putting him their media guide should he be inducted _ which he won’t in 2010.
P Ray Guy, 1973-86: Two problems _ there are simply too many voters who will never vote for a punter. Ridiculous, of course. It’s a huge part of the sport, and you can leave it to Canton visitors to bypass his bust if they’re offended. Then there’s the “There goes the neighborhood” issue. Guy’s career stats are being obliterated by Shane Lechler, the heir to his legacy in silver and black. That makes the voters think, “You mean we’ll have to put in another punter some day?
CB Lester Hayes, 1977-86: Never clear as to why Hayes isn’t taken more seriously as a candidate. Think Charles Woodson is having a great season for the Packers this year? It’s not even close to what Hayes did in 1980 _ the single best season any defensive back has ever had. “The Judge” had 39 career interceptions and made five Pro Bowls.
WR Jerry Rice, 2001-04: In 2001 and 2002, Rice caught 175 passes for 2,350 yards and 16 touchdowns following two sub-1,000 yard season playing second-fiddle to Terrell Owens in San Francisco. In 2003, Rice finally started to show some age, catching 63 passes for 869 yards. He turned 41 that season. Those numbers are looking pretty good to the Raiders about now.
Look for Rice’s bio in your Raiders media guide next year, and deservedly so. Two great years and a turn-back-the-clock playoff game against the Jets following the 2001 season (9 catches, 183 yards, one touchdown) added to his legacy.

Thanks Dell!
Kinda strange how Cable decides who to bench. The again, without much depth, Morrison and the rookie WRs have to stay out there.
I wonder what the long term plan is for Howard? If Scott is now the Weakside LB, then we should just cut the BS and go with the 3-4. There are so many times when we play around with it any way by standing a DT up.
Let’s just get on with it!
===========
Why do you think Cable decides?
He’s pretty much made it clear that he “got the ok” to not just bench JR, but for it to be longer than a week.
He might request..and seek affirmation, but can’t see him, on his own, benching anyone.
Unless they’re a nobody that is just run of the mill, and no threat to reflect on Al’s decisions making/signing abilities.

You said it to the point. Kind of reminded me of a dad whos’ son just got relegated to the back-up at the high school level. All the excuses in the world without any truth.
November 28th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
BTW..Jerry?
Pretty weak listing Craig and Rice as “Raider HOF prospects”, don’t you think?
However, obviously the point appears to be the “RAIDERS” putting them in their media guide, which honestly would just come across as pathetic.
Raiders will be laughed at, across the Bay, listing both of those players as “Raiders”, as they go into the Hall as Niners, (obviously inductees don’t go in wearing the team logo) who both came back to SF and signed a one day deal, to retire as Niners.
Will be funny when the Raiders list Sapp, and Randy Moss as “RAIDER PLAYERS IN THE HALL”..and pathetic.

Exactly.
Like Jeff Garcia’s dad.
Now that was some funny shyte.
Game after game Garcia was playing like total crap..just horrible.
Radio talk show after the game..caller kept calling in, making excuse after excuse after excuse, just like Priest does. EVERYONE else’s fault, but never Garcia’s. Wasn’t Garcia’s fault the ball bounced off the turf..the PLAYER SHOULD HAVE DOVE. Wasn’t Garcia’s fault he took a sack, it was the lineman’s..Garcia didn’t fumble..was a “lucky” play by the defense….
Finally, after a handful of bad games, and repeated calls from the exact same caller, telling everyone who’s calling in they’re WRONG ABOUT GARCIA, host playfully said “jeez..only someone’s Dad would run that weak excuse”..where he stated “I AM HIS DAD”.
Classic. Funny as hell.

In all honesty, JR had his chance. He was not set up to fail. The playbook was even catered to fit him and his ability to call sets. Even Moronovich put together a drive or two. It was evident with the spark Grads created, which at this point, was better than watching this excrutiating ice wagon try and make it up a hill. The only consolation to some of these losses is to come in here and read some of the posts by the pro Jr’ers and get a laugh.

———————–
Someone has to put up the numbers? How do you figure? Who’s putting up Tim Brown-like numbers in Oakland the last 7 years. Brown has to be a Hall of Fame lock. Carter should certainly make it too, but I have the feeling he’s not in yet because he’s kind of a pr!ck.
November 28th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Brown is a lock..in due time.
When you look at a Rice? Easy automatic.
But Brown? All things considered, there are many quality players who are worthy, it’s just when do they get in.
I suspect Brown is going to be waiting a few years.
November 28th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Also, Brown did play in 3 AFC Championship games and a Super Bowl. Would’ve been in a 4th Championship game and possibly another Super Bowl if not for “The Tuck Rule” debacle.

I reread the above blog and did not see anything Jerry said that would suggest that “writers should be voting on who goes in”. Where is that quote that I missed?
November 28th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
The word may come down from Al on certain players like Russell, but I have a hard time believing that Al would prefer DHB over Walker, per se. Al spent a lot of $ on Walker and refused to let him retire. Why would Al want him on the inactive list?
I can’t imagine Al telling Cable to put Russell back at KR.
Why on earth would Al spend all that $ on McFadden and hail Bush only to insist that Cable give Fargas the most carries?
Cable is responsible for the offense and who takes the field. He has the final say and can deal with Al on Monday’s. The big one’s like Russell I get that he needs the owner’s ok. But not most of his decisions.
November 28th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Jhill, we can no longer question why Al does what he does. It’s like trying to pick fly sheet out of pepper. Impossible.
November 28th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
he 1983 Raiders are on KTVU Channel 2. I accidentally found it because its called The Deadliest Catch which is the wrong title. Now theres some real truth to whats being said there if you haven’t seen it before.
November 28th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
What a shame we can’t draft the qb position. There a some good qbs’ in college and we have to look to the recycle bin. In all Als’ doings, he could never put into place a system for developing quarterbacks? I guess he just thought his JaMar could get it done, the team would morph around #2 and the deep threat would be Als’.
I’ll say it again, While Grads might be only 50% of what it takes to be a pro qb, he is a 100% better than Als’ #1 pick.
====================
Case in point.
November 28th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
I predicted the Cowboys would win 38-7. I’m surprised I was 2 Touchdowns off my prediction. I guess the Raiders played better than I thought.

November 28th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

November 28th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I’d want two firsts, or a first and a second for Nnamdi. Not sure anyone would give that up, but we really have no reason to give him up barring big time compensation.
November 28th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Maybe a proven D lineman and a second. I admit to not being a draft guru. I am just full of turkey and trying to start some conversation.
It just seems other teams can run or pass on us at will and have been able to for a number of years.
It may be the scheme we play, nonetheless
we may be better off if we got a good deal for him.
November 28th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
JUST IN: Justin Miller released from Jets. If we don’t make a move on him, we’re even more brain dead than we previously thought.
I mean, seriously. Russel running back kickoffs?
At least we know what Miller can/can’t do. Namely, he can get into the Pro Bowl.

I’m on board with Mallert after watching the LSU game. Dude looks like a taller Tom Brady and he would come in miles ahead of where Russell was because he’s coached by Petrino. I haven’t seen Pike but he puts up monster numbers. I will make a point to watch his next game.
November 28th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
I’m on board with a Nnamdi trade for a 1st. I think his stock is falling each week because our defensive philosophy is stupid. He’s getting beat and not even covering #1 receivers.
November 28th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
504,
Mallert is da man. He is going to be the first overall pick if he comes out in 2011. We have way too many young players. I think we need more veterans in there. I’d love to see some vet LB’s that we can get in the offseason or trade for. Our LB corp is pathetic. I dont want to wait for a young QB. Get a legit vet QB in the offseason would be fine too.
Later….I’m out.
November 28th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Think of other things to do with your Raider fan pals and relatives. Do something else on Sundays. BBQ at the park, something. I’ve heard that if you watch games at bars the NFL nor the Raiders get any money from it. I don’t understand how that works but someone explained it to me once. Anyhow, just stop giving your money directly to the Raiders, one way or another. Nobody’s asking you to denounce the Raider Nation. By all means, stay a Raider fan. But just stop giving your money to Al Davis.

Fassel says he plans to return to UFL
Posted by Mike Florio on November 28, 2009 10:26 PM ET
As part of the same FanHouse.com article in which Florida Tuskers coach Jim Haslett says he already has been contacted by an NFL team, Las Vegas Locomotives coach Jim Fassel says he plans to return to the UFL in 2010.
“I loved this,” Fassel said. “I loved coaching in this league and I just had a ball coaching these guys. You saw the character and the toughness they have.”
Translation? Fassel, who coached the Giants from 1997 through 2003, knows he’s got no chance of getting an NFL head-coaching job.
Or maybe Fassel has realized that he needs to play it cool in order to generate NFL interest. Indeed, he tried out a very uncool approach last November, sending a “please hire me” letter to Raiders owner Al Davis.
Fassel says he won’t rule out a return to the NFL. But he says he wouldn’t want to “go there and be miserable and lose.”
In other words, he has decided in the past 12 months that he doesn’t want to coach the Raiders, after all.
…………
sigh… I am a fan of the ‘Rodney Dangerfield’ of football.

JaMarcus Russell’s mysterious pants accessory
Posted by Mike Florio on November 28, 2009 11:14 PM ET
Several of you have forwarded to us throughout the day this image from the Raiders’ November 22 game against the Bengals.
Most insist that the item tucked inside the waistband of Russell’s pants is a pack of Skittles.
We think it’s not nearly as clear as many of you have suggested.
Our guess? It’s a folded up bag of David’s Sunflower Seeds.
Besides, Russell doesn’t strike as a Skittles guy. He’s got more of an extra-thick gravy and entire-carrot-cake-in-one-sitting build.
November 28th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Each and every player’s HOF stats were the accumulation of everywhere they played, period. Hall of Famers are not measured by their stats on only one of their teams they played for. Nope, that proves how completely pathetic your logic really is. Hall of Famers are presented by their CAREER stats, dip$hit! That means that every team they played for was part of their HOF career, and therefore should display each players name with honor! If you don’t believe that each of Jerry Rice’s teams should honor Jerry’s presence, and time on thier team proudly, then you are living in a different universe than the rest of us. Yeah, IDIOT, IF he performed well while in Oakland, it could have helped his overall stats, and helped in deciding. But again, that’s not the point, is it?
Point is only a sorryass fool is going to state ‘oh goody, Rice was with the Raiders, so I’m going to celebrate him going into the hall as a Raider”

…Which is why there is nothing wrong with *every* team (that Rice played for) to honor Rice as a HOF that played for their team. Rice was a Niner, Rice was a Raider. Rice even helped both teams get to a Superbowl. My god! Not mentioning Rice would have been terrible! There is absolutely nothing wrong with honoring Rice, or pathetic about it. Lester Hayes has belonged in the hall for twenty years… definately an injustice…
Moss should never get in strictly based on his two years here…
in my opinion it was the combination of Sapp and Moss that set us back a couple years…
November 29th, 2009 at 5:27 am
And Grudens win now attitude Pete, imo. Not saying Gruden was bad 4 us…he was good and bad, imo. He assembled a vet team and didnt think of the future, just as in Tampa Bay…same story, almost identical.Plus Robbins flipping out.It was old players and no heir apparents. And of course the F/A’s fiasco.
Well I think Javon Walker cured Big Al of that “MADNESS”.
I think we have a real good nucleus but am seeing our LB’s as the biggest weekness of the team.Sure the O-line didnt play well vs. ‘boys but the defense lost that game.
Now all of a sudden we giving up HUGE plays.
It woulda been nice 2 get 2 or 3 of the top LB’s last year. Its almost like T.Howard and K.Morrison are regressing like Jmac…I wonder if they eat at the same places’ lol.
November 29th, 2009 at 5:32 am
with-out those big plays 2 the ‘boys…We prolly still lose but lose 10-7 or so.I know it’s still a “L” but when we are trying to still get it together I would rather lose 10-7 than 24-7.
Yep altho many say he isnt the answer…who knows,Grads did a fine job in his 2nd outing, imo.Room 4 improvment?Sure!!! but no bad at-all,imo
November 29th, 2009 at 5:58 am
Moss is gonna finish with so many TD he will get in 1 time. No way is Gradowski the answer but just show how awful russell was playing that an awful journeyman gives you a better chance.

November 29th, 2009 at 6:47 am

November 29th, 2009 at 6:51 am
It begs the question……why are we not using Dmac in the wildcat ? Just use it once are twice a game to give the other teams D coach something to think about. We’ve all seen the Youtube clips of Dmac running it in college why not try it in the pro’s ? There’s nothing to lose.
November 29th, 2009 at 6:53 am
Branch,Hayes,Plunkett and Guy for the Hall !!

November 29th, 2009 at 6:54 am
Cable was given the job after Greg Knapp was stripped of his duties. Knapp was given the job after Kiffin was fired. Al took away the job from Knapp after he figured he was going to leave for Seattle. He had no one for the position and gave it to Cable who is a line coach. He has been putrid as an Offensive Coor. in college previously and is not qualified.

Dmac saw defenses in college that maybe had one or two guys that would eventually play on Sundays.
In the mean time his offensive line was able to give him space to work.
Speed is useless without space to work and we are seeing the effect of a weak offensive line in how Dmac is used.
Football is a game of time and space and all the speed in world is useles without and Oline that can give the space to work.
Building our Oline in the 2010 draft will happen but in the meantime we have another lost season.

We have trotted out so many different coordinators and coaches over the past seven seasons and have gotten the same results.
Why? Because we do not have the TALENT.
Period.
You guys that constantly complain about poor coaching have got to look at the track record OF THIS TEAM.
Madden was a terrific coach but he also had HOF talent especially on the Oline.
Draft some line talent and you will see the Raiders rebound.

Agreed. If you take the Dallas game they had one big play using the wildcat ( if I remember right ) and then we stopped them after that.
I wouldn’t use the wildcat all the time.Just once or twice if that-could even fake going into the wildcat.I just want to make the other D coach plan for it.Make him think we’re going to use it.
Football is a game of time……it’s also a game of inches, and if the threat of the wildcat gives the Raiders both, then I’m all for it.

OMG, If any of you in the Sacramento market want to see something extraordinarily creepy right now, tune to channel 4 on comcast or 58 on satellite and watch this gore fest called, “Al Davis: An AFL Legend”. They have this guy who looks dead who keeps talking about the Raiders. Oh, wait, it’s Al Davis! My god, his eyes look like they’re bleeding! Sort of this watery, blood look. Don’t let your kids see this. They should remove the footage of Davis, and then it wouldn’t be as scary and you could put it on the network where it belongs, Comedy Central.
Does he look like this

This just in…My Nephew (In Law) is 1 1/2 years old and was told about the Raiders once by his father. They were at the store and he saw another kid with a Raider shirt on and he got excited and pointed at his shirt and said Go Raiders over and over. I never knew a kid so young would already be into it but thats hella cool. Lets hope he can see some winning Raiders football as he gets older and begins to understand it.

If I was voting for the 5 to get in the Hall this year I’d go with, in order:
- Rice
- Emmitt
- Lester Hayes
- Charles Haley
- Andre Reed
Tim Brown should definitely make it soon, but possibly won’t be 1st ballot since Reed and Carter are still waiting.

Guys, what is up with Al Davis? I was watching that Al Davis, AFL special last night, where they had current footage of him talking. He has this watery, bloody look in his eyes, like he’s crying tears of blood. WTF is that? I’ve never seen that, even in old people. What is wrong with him? Al Davis is hands down one of the scariest looking people on the planet, and I don’t mean scary in a masculine way. I mean scary in a pitiful way.

He doesn’t look very good. Too bad. He coukld at least do something about his appearance but I guess he just doesn’t care. The watery eyes are often found in older people. He certainly could use a tri to the dentist and get some whitening treatments. I assume it is like he says – just win baby. Unfortunately he’s failing there too.

Al Davis needs to consider Marc Trestman as a coaching candidate.
November 29th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
I wonder if Al ever considers what his Raiders would be like today if he would have drafted Lienert instead of Huff???
November 29th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
JB, Al looks like a freak. Sugar coat it all you will. This may come as a surprise to you, but I’ve met old people. Had grandparents. Great aunts and uncles. I’ve been to the grocery store, which is full of old people. And I’ve never seen a ghoul like Al Davis with blood in their eyes. Al looks all f’d up. Something is seriously wrong with him, aside from age. Stress or something.
November 29th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
You know what pisses me off. Through all these drafts, Al always takes the guy with straight speed over production. But then last year, he goes with McFadden over straight speed Chris Johnson. I mean, McFadden is fast too, but if we followed that same strategy this year, then we should have taken Maclin (someone really fast but also with production). The one time he goes with production, the guy he passes ends up being a monster.
But, there are also 20 other teams that passed on him and even when the Titans took him, it was seen as a shock and a reach.
This is just another way of saying Al is completely lost in his draft strategy and seems to be changing it up yearly.

AL’s eyes are glazed over really bad. He looks like his days are numbered but at the end of the season when he gets out the overhead and breaks down the demise of Tom Cable he could look better, its called old age. Would look the same as it does today. Our O & D lines are terrible – especially the O-line. Weak lines play ZBS because it makes them all they can be. Unfortunately, a power line will kick a ZBS line’s ass every time. We will never be a championship team playing ZBS. Keep Hendersen & Gallery and dump the rest. Draft all power linemen this next draft. Oh yes, one DT & middle linebacker too! Until we build up our lines we will never be worth a schit.

November 29th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
MB, again, do you honestly think I’ve never seen old people? I know plenty of old people. In the grocery store, you see a multitude of old people. But I don’t see any old people who literally look as if their eyes are bleeding. Al has this sort of plastic looking film covering his face, and it looks as if it disconnects from where his eyes are, almost as if he’s a burn victim. It’s abnormal. It’s not a sign of aging. It’s rare. I know a lot of people who are 80 years old, people who’ve drank and smoked in their lives, something Al never did, and none of them look that bad. I personally believe it’s stress. I think when you spend so much of your time lying and holding grudges with people it accumulates and start to take its toll on you mentally and physically, and Al is on the extreme end of it. Al is a poster boy for living an honest life and spending all of your time trying to screw people over and lie about it to anyone who calls you on it. Basically, that’s what will eventually happen to you. You’ll start to look like Freddy Krueger.
November 29th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
We have no GM, a horrible HC and a Slacker QB who doesn’t give a crap. There’s nothing the draft can do to help us, it has to come from upstairs…

November 29th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Al’s been known for making late night phone calls to coaches, etc, even in recent years. I can just picture this guy staying up till 4 every night, carrying out grudges, plotting ways to screw this person and that person, drumming up lies to make himself seem innocent…wow. It’s no way to live. He really needs help.

MR, old people go through phases where they look terrible and then they improve a little bit. Every time they bounce back a little less and then they are gone. I saw that interview. I’ve seen a similar look on my family member and I’ve seen that same person rebound thats all I’m saying.
Why AL agreed to the interview in that condition is beyond me.

Watched the Colts win today. Beat Texans 35-27.
Was great to see what a real NFL Team looks like.
They got down 17-0. Peyton throws 2 picks in the first half. Panic? Cave in? Roll-over? Heck NO!
They just keep coming like the tide on the ocean.
If the Raiders got down 17-0 and had 2 picks in the 1st half, what do you think the final score would be?
Against the Bengals – 20-17 Raiders
Against the rest of the NFL – 45-0
Too bad Oakland can’t play the Bengals 16 times in a season. lol

November 29th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Al looks like he does because he has sucked the life from this franchise and know he’s tired. The players who bail get a second chance. There was a time when Al could give new hope and life to cast-offs, but since the Marcus Allen deal, he’s gone bizarro. Except for the Gruden years, Al seems hell bent on taking this team down.
However, Cable as he is, tends to be the resuscitator right now. Can you imagine the baggage that guy has to tote around. Scrambling all over the facility looking for ways to keep this ship from sinking. Give him the credit (at least a little bit). He is trying, albeit may not be good enough. Look who he has to deal with. He may have puppet strings on his balls, but I’ll bet he don’t like it.
We can only hope Al wakes up one day and realizes he is old and tired and truly desires some quality help and gm.

When your a permanent resident of last place, somethings wrong. All teams go in the gutter but quickly turn it around and remain competetive. This Oakland squad hasn’t done much for quite some time, and I sadly don’t see any overnight success on the horizon. We have to make some lite of this or we go nuts being true fans. This has been a very depressing last twenty years. We had to sweat out the Marc Wilson years and its’ only gotten worse. Where is the annual desire to be competetive? Every thing starts at the top, wether it be in the family, business, sports, whatever. If I own a bodyshop and an employee royally does a awful job, I get the credit. If I buld a fine home and the sub-contractors to an horrible job, I get the credit. If I am a principle and my HS has the lowest math scores in the state, I’m going to have a tough time finding another job. If I’m Al Davis and my raiders suck ass, its’ on me!

If Al is meddling and not letting his coaches coach, and we all know he is, Tom Brady couldn’t carry this team. Do you believe Russell is more at fault than Al Davis? Tell me you’re that crazy, along with naming your presidential hopeful for ‘12. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get ready to laugh my ass off. Awaiting your answer.

Islandraider, you guy’s are so funny, and cute you think that’s all there is. They were right when they said ignorance is bliss. Every team has a GM why are only a few win on a regular basis if that’s all it takes. What’s wrong with the 49ers the Rams, the Browns, the Bucs, the Lions, the Chiefs, the Chargers, why haven’t the Cowboy’s won a playoff game?
Fans are so naive.
=============================================
So what excuse does Al have since he is the GM? Can’t do it as a GM?
November 29th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Oh, Obama’s going to drop out and not run for reelection? Where did you read that? The same place you found out that Obama gave the orders for today’s police shootings, or that JaMarcus Russell is the reason the Raiders have been bad for 7 years? You’re all laughs tonight, MB. Let’s hear who your presidential hopeful to beat Obama in ‘12 is. That’s probably why your’e saying he’s going to bow out, to save yourself the utter humiliation you would endure by naming a Republican candidate that will beat Obama.

MB, are you going to name a potential candidate to beat Obama, or not? If anyone could beat him, that’s all the more easier it is for you to name someone. You do understand how elections work, don’t you? You do understand that actual people have to run against him. Which brings me to my next point, what kind of president is going to bow out of a reelection race when there’s no sign of a a candidate that can beat him? Just like you, the Republican party doesn’t have a clue, either. Your guys’ hopes rest on him dropping out, when there’s no promising candidate that looks like they can beat him? Dream on, dunce.

Three reasons (well, excuses ok)
-poor decisions for the wrong reasons
-one man cannot do it alone (as in the raiders case)
-bad management, bad personell
Feel free to add.
November 29th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
You don’t have one single candidate in mind who can beat Obama, do you, MB? Yeh, I’ve been twisting your words all night, haven’t I? Yet you’ve still responded, up until now. Now all of a sudden you’re above the argument. Wrong. You just don’t have any candidate in mind who can beat Obama, and you’re too afraid to embarrass yourself naming one of the current GOP hopefuls, because you know you’ll get laughed at. Wise choice. Keep hiding from the question, moron.
November 29th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
MB, what chances do any of the current GOP hopefuls have of beating Obama if republicans don’t even have the balls to get behind any of them? You can’t even name someone who has a chance! OK, I’ll tell you what, I’ll make it easier on you. Name someone who has a chance of getting within 100 electoral votes of Obama. You know none of the current GOP hopefuls can beat him, so to save yourself face, I’ll let you name one candidate who at least might make it close. Go ahead, name one.

I asked you to name just one, out of the republicans likely to run. You don’t want to because you don’t want to embarrass yourself any further. Every time you bring this up without having the ballsack to name a GOP hopeful who can beat Obama, you make yourself look dumber. You say Obama is a pu$$y? Who’s the pu$$y in here tonight? YOU! November 29th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Islandraider, I’m not at all attacking you my man. Just stating some facts, as fans we believe that whatever you’re doing do the opposite and that will fix everything. My point is it is not that simple if it were winning SB’s would be very easy.
Winning in the NFL is very difficult. The Jets haven’t won since the 70’s the Chiefs haven’t won since the 70’s the Bears went 23 years before winng in ‘85 the 49ers haven’t won since 1995.
All I ever read in here is that if we get a GM everything will be great. That IMO is the height of ignorance every single team has a GM. That doesn’t solve a thing other than to say we have a GM. The Warriors have a GM and they stink!!
Biulding a winner is having a lot of luck and some well planned organized objectives that happen to pan out. If you’re of the opinion that he hires a GM and then we win, you’re crazy. Every GM has a phylosophy like Bill Parcells for instance desn’t gaurantee a damn thing.
Chiefs had a great GM for 20 years everybody said he was one of the best. He never won a damn thing. Same with the Chargers, same with several other organizatins that have never won.
Because it just isn’t as simple as getting a GM. Teams like Tampa and Baltimore got really lucky and won but look at them now with the same system sure they have decent records and such but the chance of them winning a SB is a toss up.

November 29th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
Kirk, hear that Lou Dobbs might run? Talk about a landslide. Considering the growing Latino vote. And, the republicans are just desperate, and stupid enough to nominate him. Obama wouldn’t even have to campaign. Could just start working on his second term agenda.

He’s not going to lose to FoxNews or Matt Drudge, your butt buddy. A person has to beat him. You’re saying Obama’s going to lose, yet you can’t name one single person who you think can beat him. Mickey Mouse (a fictional cartoon character)

Good Article… Explains why Raiders might win 2 more this season.
Raiders prove that some should be more thankful for than others
By MJD
When Tony Romo(notes) looked around his locker room after today’s 24-7 win over the Raiders, he saw a lot of guys he could point to and say, “I am thankful for this guy, because he makes my job easier.”
If Bruce Gradkowski(notes) said that about anyone in his locker room, he was just being nice.
The Raiders played hard this afternoon, and while it might be a stretch to say that they gave the Cowboys a game, they didn’t embarrass themselves, either. The effort was there. What’s not there, though, is the same level of talent enjoyed by most other NFL teams. It becomes especially clear when they play a team like the Cowboys who are loaded at the skill positions. It doesn’t even look like the two teams are playing the same sport.
When Tony Romo drops back, he’s got guys in front of him who can protect him from a pass rush. With the time that gives him, he’s usually able to locate a receiver who has been able to get separation from the defense.
When Gradkowski drops back, he’s got about two seconds before a defender crushes him. And if, somehow, he’s able to get away from the rush, he’ll be looking downfield for an inexperienced receiver who probably has not found a way to beat the coverage.
He’s playing with such a high degree of difficulty. It’s like he and Romo are both carpenters, and when Romo goes to work, he gets a hammer, a screwdriver, a drill, a saw and a tape measure. Gradkowski gets a ball of yarn and a breadstick.
I felt bad for the Raiders today. They’re trying. Tom Cable has them playing hard, but they just don’t have the horses. It’s not Bruce Gradkowski’s fault, and it wasn’t entirely JaMarcus’s Russell’s fault, either. It’s a bare cupboard. There are haves and have-nots in the NFL right now, and the Raiders demonstrated to all the haves today just how thankful they should be.

Charlie,
With 3 young guys entrenched on our Oline In Gallery, Henderson, and Satele, I think it would be wise to add a solid veteran or 2 to the group.
Free agency is going to be huge for us this year. We need LBs in the worst way unless Nixon and Norris develop rather quickly.
We don’t have a nickle corner on the roster.
We’re going to need a DT because I’m pretty sure that Warren AND Kelly won’t both be back. One or the other, and I’d think it would be Warren at a reduced salary.
I think we will be picking around 10 and should have a shot at a good LB or CB.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

——————————————————
That about sums up our offense for most of the year.
Charlie is right! We need to fix this OL quick!
Isn’t it about time to put Gallery back at OT? Let Gallery and Henderson be our bookends! Draft 2 MONSTERS at OG this year, and we are back in business.

Sources who were part of the team say that in the late 1980s and early ’90s Davis ordered Raiders coaches to limit Allen’s playing time, often in favor of far less effective runners. Steve Smith and others say that Davis sometimes ordered that quarterbacks not throw the ball to Allen. “The other players had heard so much about this ‘family’ thing, but then we saw what happened to Marcus,” says Ronnie Lott, who played safety for the Raiders in 1991 and ‘92. “All of a sudden, the guy who was Mr. Raider wasn’t part of the family. We wondered, How can you not play your best player?”

Straight out of the desperate right winger’s handbook. Duck the question, then insist you’ve answered it. Again, name one potential presidential candidate who you think could beat Barack Obama in ‘12. Do you understand what that means? I means name one living, breathing person, who’s been mentioned in the press or otherwise as being a potential 2012 presidential candidate, who you think could beat Obama. There’s about a dozen or so to choose from. Just do a google on 2012 presidential candidates and the links mentioning the usual suspects will pop up. “anyone” is not an answer. If you honestly believe that anyone on the planet could beat Obama in ‘12, then it should be all the more easier for you to give us just one name. You’re net to do so. So far, you’ve only mentioned George W. Bush (laughable, even if he wasn’t termed out), and Mickey Mouse, who is a fictional cartoon character, and, at last I heard, has no intentions of running. You do know Mickey Mouse is fictional, don’t you? It’s sad I have to ask, but considering the intelligence you’ve demonstrated thus far? So, like I said, I’ll stop asking the question when you actually man up and answer it. November 29th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Here is some food for thought…
DHB
11 Games – 9 Rec for 124 yards. 13.8 Yards Per Catch average with 1 TD
The “Speedster” DHB’s longest completion is 24 yards. He has maybe 3 total catches over 20 yards.
Crabtree
5 Games – 22 Rec for 292 yards. 13.3 Yards Per Catch average with 1 TD
The “Possession” Crabtree’s longest completion is 38 yards. He has several catches over 20 yards.
By the way, the League Average this year for WRs is 287 yards. (Crabtree is higher than that in only 5 games)
Funny how some guys on here claim Crabtree is NOTHING but a possession WR and DHB has all this potential due to his “speed”
Crabtree has the same yards per catch average as DHB and has connected on longer pass plays.
Crabtree’s last game he had 4 catches for 77 yards. That’s a 19 yard per catch average.
Crabtree has a 58 yards per game average compared to DHB’s 13 yards per game.
Yeah, that DHB pick is looking better and better.

The way these Davis worshipers root against Davis’s adversaries around the football world with the same passion they root for the Raiders is just sad. I wonder if they were doing this when the Raiders were good earlier this decade? Something tells me that if the Raiders’ record was reversed, and they were in the playoff hunt, guys like Plunkethead wouldn’t even be paying attention to Kiffin or how he’s doing. They’re desperate for any bravado they can find, because they’re not getting it with the Raiders till Al is gone, and deep inside they know that.

My favorite part of the article above…
He’s(Gradkowski) playing with such a high degree of difficulty. It’s like he and Romo are both carpenters, and when Romo goes to work, he gets a hammer, a screwdriver, a drill, a saw and a tape measure. Gradkowski gets a ball of yarn and a breadstick.
……………
F’N ball of yarn and a breadstick. That’s funny. Sad, but funny.
November 29th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Same goes for Russell. Got a ball of yarn and a breadstick, too. And when you consider that Russell’s playcalling was more dated and ineffective, Gradkowski was actually saddled with more tools than Russell. Don’t get me wrong, Russell sucks. The point is, so does Gradkowski. This team is fractured and the point of impact is at the top. That’s where the changes need to be made. They’ll never be made there? Then guess what, it doesn’t matter who we start at QB. We’re going to suck no matter what. I don’t care if Gradkowski is a tiny bit better than Russell (which is all he’s proven so far, if even that…), let me know when we cross the 5 win mark with Gradkowski under center. Because in case you spinmeisters don’t know, that’s all that counts. Not being better than Russell.

The Raiders have the fewest plays over 20 yeards of any team in the league by a large margin. All that speed and Rusell’s “big” arm have added up to the most anemic, least explosive offense in the league.
November 29th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Every time you go to NFL.com and play with the stat search, you find something new the Raiders suck at.

If the raiders have scored 10 tds’ this season, that means they are paying about

Feels good to know I’m not shelling out anything for that investment. Feel sorry for those who still are.
I didn’t even know the Raiders had the highest payroll. Wonder why that’s kept quiet? Well, I mean, I know why Davis’s shills keep it quiet. It’s f’n embarrassing, considering the return on their investment, as you pointed out. But I wonder why the national sports media doesn’t talk about that more? They always try to avoid the business aspect of the game, especially where management is concerned. They’ll talk about an overpaid player till the network goes off the air.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:14 am
Look at all of the good teams on the bottom half of that list. Tell me today’s NFL isn’t a GM/coach’s medium. That’s where the competition is.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:26 am
A good coach/gm. Doesn’t garauntee super bowls, but it will fill the seats and make you competetive. Also a good team spends their money wisely. Haven’t the raiders been big spenders for quite some time. near or at the top? I’ll have to research it.
Interesting nonetheless.

………
I will be glad when Al is gone or hires a gm. Would prefer the former though because Al would only f’k up the GM thing like he does the coaching hires and drafts.
But part of me still digs what he used to be. Hard to see him all old and batsh*t crazy.
I just hope when he goes, we don’t end up with some Fords/Millen combo running the team. Raiders could go out of the frying pan and into the oven.
Would like to see the organization go the way of the Pats, Colts, Ravens, or Steelers.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:00 am
Seven teams in the AFC now have five or six losses, with the Ravens and Steelers both at 6-5. Denver had the best week of any Wild Card hopeful. If the season ended today, the Broncos stand alone as the fifth seed.
…….
This is a f’n shame.
Let’s see… Raiders are 3-8
Win in week 1 – 4-7
Win against Texans – 5-6
Win against Chiefs – 6-5
3 F’N games difference and as sh*tty as we are, we would still be right in the playoff race with games against Steelers, Broncos, and Ravens remaining.

For some reason this Jason Smith, #2 pick in this past draft, concussion story isn’t gaining much attention, but I am on it.
First, the guy has struggled mightily at RT in pass protection. Than he got a concussion in practice, and was inactive from the game, yet still was hospitalized while vomiting on the sideline. Crowd-noise made him dizzy, he said.
Damaged goods? Not a good start that’s for sure.
Again, it is not the position we draft that is the issue, it is the players.
Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith don’t seem to be very good, and might not have long NFL careers. If we would have drafted them, we would not be any better today.
But if we would have taken Oher or Percy Harvin…..

Ricky Ray is a Rainbow Arm.
He does not have the velocity to put the ball in the small holes needed in the NFL.
He’s a good QB but better suited to the wide open spaces in the CFL.
Jarious Jackson has a better chance to be successful but he would be considered too old now.
November 30th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Ricky Ray had a cup of coffee with the Jets.
Smart QB but a touch passer.
November 30th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Vegas,
Don’t you believe there might be a connection between draft picks struggling and being drafted by Schytty teams?
I seriously doubt Percy Harvin would be having a good season right now if he played for the Oakland Raiders. And Michael Oher got to go to a great team that has stability and a history of good o-line play in Baltimore…if he had gone to the Rams he might be struggling just as much as Smith.
I think a young player’s struggles has almost as much to do with who he was drafted by as opposed to the player’s abilities.
Chris Johnson very well could be a great RB, but place him on the Raiders and put McFadden on Tenn and I doubt Chris would be as great as he is right now and McFadden wouldn’t look nearly as bad as he does right now.
….but DHB wouldn’t be catching passes anywhere….
November 30th, 2009 at 9:17 am

They are 10 times better than 3/4 of the team execs and coaches in the NFL today.
November 30th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Has it really come to the point where we are looking to the CFL to save the Raiders?
YIKES!
November 30th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Dakota,
Surely there is a correlation, I don’t doubt that. But a baller is a baller. You see Chris Johnson’s runs, is it the “stability” of Tennessee or the fact that he routinely breaks open-field tackles and makes guys miss in space. D-Mac doesn’t do any of this.
Percy Harvin would be having a helluva a lot better year than DHB, that’s for sure, and is a fantastic kick-returner. He didn’t learn to break tackles, be a play-maker, have great hands and be an electric open-field runner at Minnesota in 6 months, he had it all along.
St. Louis stinks and usually they do, but they developed maybe the greatest LT ever in Orlando Pace. The record of the Rams has nothing do with Jason Smith, at least in his rookie year, not being able to handle the physicality of the NFL.
So while you are right to an extent, no matter what teams you place DHB and Harvin on, Percy would be making a lot more plays, and Oher would be hammering people more than Monroe and Jason Smith. At least IMO.

after watching the game on Thanksgiving, I must say:
I am not impressed with ANY of our WR’s …
not Heyward-Bey, not Murphy, not Schilens. McFadden has better hands than any of them and he’s had fumble issues to work out. He also fights for the ball and gives 100 percent. those other clowns weren’t hungry
Bruce got taken down 2 or 3 times, but he was pressured an awful lot. his mobility is an asset, but he clearly has a noodle arm. the o-line is STILL garbage in pass protection
the running game was solid, but when we got down by 10 points Cable stopped calling for the runs. Fargas actually averaged over 5 yards per carry! Zach Miller continues to impress. Seabass & Shane are dominant
November 30th, 2009 at 10:44 am
on defense i was glad that we brought the pressure. Even giving up big plays in the run game, we still could have overcame those imo. Sam Williams covering Jason Witten is a joke. I hate to say this, but it’s true: nobody on the field could cover Miles Austin. He got the better of not only Johnson & Routt, but Asomugha. he made Nnamdi look like an average corner. thats rare
Branch should have been there to help CJ on that TD pass to Roy Williams. he should have been the one to shadow Witten too. I saw some good plays from Warren, Morrison, Scott & Huff on defense. Kelly, Seymour & Howard were invisable. it was like they disappeared or something?

Yeah, that DHB pick is looking better and bet
^^^^^^^^
One of the many STUPID and Brainless Al Davis picks that I have seen in my life. Didn’t think it could get worse than drafting a freakin kicker in the 1st round, but making a pick that shouldn’t even have been an option at #7 just shows how much Al Davis has lost it.
Picking DHB over guys like Crabtree, Harvin, Monroe, Oher, and even Maclin and not even trading down was flat out one of the worst draft day decisions I have ever seen!
Thanks again to AL DAVIS fro RUINING the Raider franchise!

Put fu-kin DMC back there returning kicks.
Fumbled alot doing it in college but sheesh, Oaklands special teams look like shiz on the return.
Gary Russell? He’s not even good enough to run block.
I know its not priority but it should be. Oakland needs FULLBACKS that can open holes for its potentially talented running backs.
Like putting regular gas in a dragster.
What happened to Holland? He injured or what? Just when it looked like he was starting to get the hang of it, we throw G Russell back to return kicks.
Serious mismanagement of assets.
BTW, didn’t exactly see Gradkowski lighting up the revamped wide open offense either.
So was it just J. Russell who’s only got a third of the playbook down?
Grads been working with Paul Hackett since Tampa and thats all we got was standard crap plays. In fact, it looked even MORE restricted.
Some of that was Dallas’s ends not letting us outside but still…
Unfortunately for you Russell haters, its not just our former number one making the O look bad.
What a mess… Davis has tried to fix the O. Got some high draft picks languishing there but its been seriously f’ed up since Gannon got his neck broke.
I bet Cable stays head coach. Who else would want the job?
November 30th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Since we are talking draft here we go for 2010:
Round 1- Brandon Spikes. Physical, put him in the middle and move Kirk over to the outside.
Round 2- Rather than taking another youtube legend, trade the pick for a real everydown RB. Marshawn Lynch could be had, is from Oakland and is way better than anything we have. He actually breaks tackles from time to time.
Round3-We have two picks, either go both O-line or 1 O-liner and 1 DB. Routt must be replaced.
After that…..I will leave it up to Florida Pete and all his late-round gems
November 30th, 2009 at 11:12 am
i hope we draft o-line in the first 3 rounds and draft Tebow in the 4th.
last year they said he projects to be an NFL FB or TE
i dont care what anybody says. this kid would be a better NFL QB on Day 1 than Russell, Graddy or Frye
he’s got toughness, smarts, work ethic and he’s a proven winner

He also has a Hideo Nomo super-long windup, serious accuracy issues, a million miles on him, and a less than NFL arm.
But hey I’m sure Cable will be able to advance all that he lacks, LOL

Lemme at ‘em…
Dixon/Roethlisberger throwing to Hines Ward/Holmes
or
PolishPopGun/BayouBehemoth throwing to DHB/Schilens
= advantage Pennsylvania
Rashard/Fast Willie/Mewelde
or
MBush/CrashTest/McHog
= advantage nada
P!ssburgh D
or
Raiders own
= advantage (close your eyes)
oh well…
whenever I have reached a milestone birthday I always think “thank God I don’t have to do that (the past) anymore”. watching the Raiders since the Marc Wilson era has seldom afforded me the opportunity to have similar thoughts as repetition of unsightliness on the field seems to recur endlessly.

i have no problem with Sam Williams being in the league or even on this team. every team needs depth
he’s a good ST player.
but when is it ok to have him start and then cover one of the best TE’s in the game?
NEVER. Trevor Scott did a nice job. they should have started him at WLB and Howard at SLB. or maybe after placing Alston on IR signed somebody with experience like Morlon Greenwood or Derrick Brooks instead of playing somebody average and expecting him to be Superman?
==================================
Sam Williams is a joke. Wouldn’t make anyone elses roster (Maybe the Pats take him for a week or two)
No one would expect him to cover. Thats Oaklands defense unprepared and on its heels. They sucked and all too often look out of sorts.
Morrison sucks as D QB period.
Huff’s been doing more but he’s not ready either. He blew several coverages that allowed Austin such a big game.
Scott played standing up the majority of the game and was in coverage alot. Back fired on that red zone tip where he slammed into Tyvon Branch who would’ve walked into the endzone. All too typical for the Raiders.
CALL THE BALL!!!
Grade school BS.
Heard it mentioned Scott against Dallas reminded them of Brayton and not just cuz he wears 91 too.
Scott’s way better and I like how they’re using him more then just a pass rush specialist on 3rd.
Of course, like you pointed out, its only out of necessity.
Ricky Brown’s too little to play the position. Alston’s never taken the job and Williams has been a Davis charity case for waaaaay to long.
Hate to say it hate to, but who else can you blame for the Raiders cellar dwelling performances lo’ these long years?
The common denominator?
AL DAVIS.
I hate it. I hate where we are, what we’ve become and how we’ve been mismanaged into the abyss. Its beyond laughing stock and or pity. Now its just complete irrelevance.
Thanks Al.
It was always tough being a Raider fan. Now its this side of unbearable.

I know Troy Smith doesn’t have the Al Davis canon for an arm and he’s “too short” but that kid is a leader and a winner.
He’d be helming the Ravens if not for Flacco and likely winning.
Get Smith at least as Russell’s back up for next year till we boot his azz.

There is a youtube video of the two (Russell and Smith) doing a sideline interview in their rookie years, during the LSU-Ohio State BCS game.
Smith is wearing his teams colors and blue jeans, speaks articulately and is focused. Russell is wearning god knows what, is goofing off, not paying attention….and well the youtube video is titled “Jamarcus Russell attempts to speak English”.
I will take Smith as well.

No, peanut..the nit said “all those Raiders should be in the hall. They made the NFL what it is”
See..that’s ignorant. Makes zero sense.
Adding “The NFL should embrace the greatness of the raiders” is almost as dumb.
I take it back..easily as dumb.
As far as players being slighted? Because of Al?
No doubt. See, Al has spent his WHOLE LIFE screwing over players. Screwing over EACH AND EVERY COACH HE EVER HAD..screwed over his partner who got him in with the Raiders, and has been screwing over fans both in Oakslum, and LA, like no owner EVER HAS in any sport.
Al Davis is an embarrassment to the NFL. The man has never had an ounce of class. The man is universally despised. You won’t find a single person with a backbone who defends him. It’s only the meek sheep who insist others make their choices for them, then they blindly go along.
There is a reason players don’t want to be associated with Al Davis.
A reason coaches don’t want to be mentioned in the same sentence as Al Davis.
He’s the kiss of death.
To players careers.
To coaches longevity.
To players getting in the hall in a timely manner.
And he could care less. He views YOU as a flea. Not even worthy of his time, or even a nod in your direction.
Why should any writer, or schedule maker, or jury not try and return some karma he so deserves?

Yeah, he did what he HAD TO DO.
I’m talking about Al screwing over Madden, and chasing him out of the game. About literally forcing Flores out, ending up in Seattle. About firing White on Christmas Eve, just because he enjoys the image of being a total jerk, and a “scrooge”..about making comments about how fans mean squat, and that he could give a damn about what the fans felt when he moved to LA…the scumbag refused to let the team show up for a parade after the SB in ‘02, all because he was PO’ed at Alameda County,..also refused to let the players show up at a seperate Fan Appreciation day, FOR NO OTHER REASON than to show who’s boss…that same lowlife held back thousands and thousands of SB tickets, that were supposed to go TO THE FANS, until he got caught…
He’s getting what he deserves…which is nothing..which is watching his organization collapse..which is his image and legend permanently tarnished.

I posted here in the spring and all Florida Pete was talking about was this Jasper Brinkley MLB from South Carolina. He’s listed 6′2” 265. His forty time was on the slow side like 4.65 or something.
The Ray Lewis I saw last night is 6′1” 270 and I guarantee you his forty is around 4.7
Now who in this organization wouldn’t take Ray Lewis right now to be our MLB?
We seriously need to start taking football players instead of Combine Kings.
