“I don’t really see any change whatsoever. He’s working, doing what he’s asked to do. He’s preparing like normal. So I wouldn’t say there was any change or anything I’ve noticed.”

Man, you guys are sharks in the water with this Russell kid.

So the issue is he shouldn’t be working?

He shouldn’t be doing what he’s asked to do?

He shouldn’t be preparing like normal?

    LMFAO!
    …………

You have to read between the lines.

I don’t really see any change whatsoever = no improvement

He’s working, doing what he’s asked to do. = He’s only doing the minimal amount of work.

He’s preparing like normal = Still doing the same crap that got him benched

So I wouldn’t say there was any change or anything I’ve noticed. = He still sucks and if he has put in extra work, I haven’t noticed it. He certainly hasn’t done anything to change the fact that Gradkowski is my starter.

    You need to learn Media-Speak

Problem is, nothing is normal in Oakland. If they expect to compete, they’ve got to go beyond normal. Cable was clear in his remarks. What he wanted to say was: Since Russell was benched, he’s gone into hyper-drive over-time to get better. He hasn’t left the campus. He working, studying, preparing 24/7 because he knows that is what the Raiders are going to need from him.
    But Cable didn’t say that.

  3. KoolKell Says:

Jerry, do you think you’ll take any questions about Al Davis’ competency

  4. NorthernD Says:

    JHill,
Clearly he hasn’t been working hard enough. If he was successful in the past, then keep on doing what works, but he hasn’t been successful. He has been awful. Putting in the “regular” hours is simply not good enough. Other players in the league realize there is a limited window of opportunity in the NFL, JaMarcus hasn’t realized that yet.
Gradkowski is working hard because he knows this is it for him. He either works hard and makes something of this chance to start, or else he will be stuck as a lifetime back-up.
JaMarcus is on a sinking ship. Working with a sense of urgency should be required.

  5. jhill Says:

    Ohhhh, ok, lol!

    Reading between the lines, huh?

You don’t think that Cable, Hackett, and Tollner have spelled out what Russell should be doing? You don’t think they’ve asked him to do those things?

You think that they are just sitting back hoping that he figures things out on his own?

    LMFAO!

Well shame on Cable and staff! If a guy is willing to do all you ask him to do, and is willing to work, why not turn up the notches on “Normal”? Why not ask the guy to come in from 6am to 6pm? And if you tell me they shouldn’t have to, then I’ll say what the hell are the coaches supposed to be doing on this team?

  6. KoolKell Says:

The Raiders are so dysfunctional that year after year their players can’t even get lined up properly.

  7. jhill Says:

    Northern D,

What’s clear to me is that the WRs we have can’t get open. They are a foot or 5 from getting it all together as Cable says, but right now, and all season, they’ve been awful.

Did you see the 20 yds we had at halftime?

The 45 yds through 3 qtrs?

Thank GOD Dallas decided to go into prevent mode.

Gradkowski anb all his fire and endless work look the same, and in some cases worse than Russell.

And to be clear, I think Frye should be starting with Russell as the backup with these WRs. You need a bigger arm out there than Gradkowski has.

  8. jhill Says:

And once we get down and the running game is not a factor, this Oline CAN NOT pass block.

Bad Oline, terrible WRs, and no threat of a running game = Terrible QB.

  9. NorthernD Says:

The NFL sets limits to how much time is mandatory practice, scrimmages, etc. The coaches can’t tell a player to work 16 hours a day for 52 weeks.
    That’s why they have O.T.A.’s.
There is nothing to stop a player from coming in “voluntarily” to improve his game, though.
Peyton Manning has been in the same system for 12 years now, with a lot of veteran players, yet he probably puts in a lot more extra time than JaMarcus.
The one thing that set Donovan McNabb apart form the four other first round QB’s in his draft class was that he worked so hard at it.
Hard work pays. Too bad that’s never been a Raider motto.

  10. KoolKell Says:

Sources who were part of the team say that in the late 1980s and early ’90s Davis ordered Raiders coaches to limit Allen’s playing time, often in favor of far less effective runners. Steve Smith and others say that Davis sometimes ordered that quarterbacks not throw the ball to Allen. “The other players had heard so much about this ‘family’ thing, but then we saw what happened to Marcus,” says Ronnie Lott, who played safety for the Raiders in 1991 and ‘92. “All of a sudden, the guy who was Mr. Raider wasn’t part of the family. We wondered, How can you not play your best player?”

  11. KoolKell Says:

“If you don’t do what he says to do, when he says to do it, you’re on the s—list,” Steve Smith says. Tight end Jamie Williams, who spent 1994, the last of his 12 NFL seasons, with the Raiders, likens Davis to an “evil emperor. There’s no one to challenge him because he’s surrounded by yes-men.”

  12. NorthernD Says:

    JHill,
I also think Frye should be starting. It was pretty much a coin flip as to who was going to be the 2nd or 3rd QB breaking camp.
Yes the WR are out to lunch at times. But the QB also has to make sure they run the proper routes, come back to the ball, etc.
That’s also where the extra practice time helps. The QB and receivers pick the on the details which help them connect on more passes.
The is an old army expression, ” Sweat in peacetime, so you don’t bleed in wartime.”

  13. KoolKell Says:

Davis favors players whose most striking attribute is raw speed and obscure players whom he has discovered. Three examples are tight end Andrew Glover, a Raiders starter the past two seasons who caught only 10 passes as a senior at Grambling; defensive back Dan Land, a converted running back with excellent speed: and defensive back James Trapp, who won the NFL’s Fastest Man competition in 1995.
“Teams would watch our waiver wire,” five-time Pro Bowl wideout Tim Brown said last summer, “because the word around the league was that the Raiders were going to release football players and keep the guys Al likes.”

  14. KoolKell Says:

“You can say ‘problem players’ all you want, but that’s a lot of bull,” says safety Patrick Bates, a 1993 first-round draft choice who sat out all of last season because of his distaste for the Raiders’ organization and was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in April. “Somebody has to say, ‘I’m going to step up and discipline this team.’ “

  15. KoolKell Says:

    This one’s for you NorthernD

Nonetheless, in what has become an annual rite of spring, optimism abounds in Raiderland. Last year hopes were buoyed by the hiring of Mike White as coach and the switch to an offensive scheme featuring short timing patterns. This spring a draft-day deal that landed Ohio State tight end Rickey Dudley and the signing of two big-name free agents—defensive tackle Russell Maryland and cornerback Larry Brown, both former Dallas Cowboys—have allowed Oakland to put a happy spin on 1996.

  16. NorthernD Says:

    KoolKell,
I’ve been banging my head against wall for so long now I’ve got calluses on my forehead.
Being a Raider fan is like being in limbo.
Every year there is a new glimmer of hope. They re-signed Asomugha and Lechler. Great moves.
Then they get to the draft and reach for DHB and Mitchell. Back to square one.
I think we all know who has to leave the organization before anything changes, but we just have to sit on hands until then.
I hear Cuba has some great beaches, but nothing will change there until Castro is gone from the picture.

  17. jhill Says:

But the QB also has to make sure they run the proper routes, come back to the ball, etc.

    ——————————————————-

    Really?

I thought that was the position coaches job? And the HC on OCs job?

They spend HOURS, EVERY DAY working on this stuff. Cable as much as told you that the WRs are not where they are supposed to be. STILL!

Grads is one of the most accurate passers to come out of college. Or so I’ve been told. Did you see how badly he was missing the WRs the past 2 weeks?

Like I’ve been saying, we run a TIMIMG offense, and the WRs not being where they are supposed to be makes the QB look really bad.

  18. NorthernD Says:

Gradkowski had better make sure the WR’s run the proper routes, or else he’s out of a very high paying job.
I’m sure he’ll be all over the WR’s when they get sloppy. I don’t think he’ll leave it to Sanjay Lal to make the correction.
He’s from the Pittsburgh school of quarterbacking. His dad is friends with Dan Marino’s dad.
Can you picture Dan Marino letting a receiver mess up a route, and say “that’s okay, the WR coach will deal with it. That’s not my problem.”
Manning knows everyone’s assignment on each play. He knows when a guard messes up, let alone a WR.

    …………..
Patrick James Bates (born November 27, 1970 in Galveston, Texas) is a former safety in the National Football League. He was drafted in the 1st round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Raiders and later played for the Atlanta Falcons.

After several off-field mishaps, he never realized his full potential, which is why ESPN named him the 37th of the top 50 busts in NFL draft history

    …………..

This guy had the nerve to talk about someone being disciplined?

    LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!

But it just proves how f’d Al is when it comes to drafting.

Russell will be on the list soon.

  20. NorthernD Says:

JaMarcus can afford to be sloppy and slothful in his approach to the game.
The simple truth is that he never has to work another day in his life. He can sit at home in his mansion, and play video games ALL DAY, EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.
Gradkowski is just delaying his entry into the real world. He’ll have to get a real job after his playing days are done.
I don’t think he’ll be working at BK or McDonald’s, but he’ll still have to get up every day, report to some boss he doesn’t like, and do something that has never been a dream of his.
He’s got one shot to change that. He’s got one shot at fulfilling that lifetime dream and becoming a starter in the NFL.
Do you really think that he’s not going to try to get the WR’s to work as hard as he does? Or that he’ll let those little details slide because someone else is supposed to cover it?
A life’s work comes down to this one season for him. 7 weeks.

  21. VanHeathen Says:

JaMarcus can only control the things he’s in charge of, and that thing is HIMSELF.
This means, extra work in the film room, weight room, etc. Coming in overweight is a serious issue, yet that’s what he did. Arriving late, and leaving early, are isues w/ the team leader. Partying on Friday nite before a game, these are problems for a player who is still developing at this level, but i guess these are all OK for the worst QB in the league…He could be so much more, even on this team.

  22. Raider75 Says:

I wish I could slap the sh*t out of Rush Limbaugh and Nancy Pelosi.

  23. priesttj Says:

Young players take time to develope on every team nt just this one. Huff is paying dividends. IMO so will these high picks it’s just a matter of time. Alex Smith is finally showing some maturity for the 49ers. So is their TE who was a huge disappointment. You can go all over the league and see the same things. As good Troy Palamulo(spelling?) is now his first 2 years he was a huge disappointment.

It’s just the way the league is, it is a very high level and young players take time to get used to the speed of the game. Nnamdi is a perfect example. Rich Gannon is a perfect example he bounced around the league for 8 years. It’s not the players that are at fault it’s the way the league pays HUGE $$$ to an unproven player. The NBA does it right they have a rookie cap and it hepls them invest bigger contracts on solid talent. Monte Ellis finally got paid and now loook at him. Same with Anthony Randolph and Step Curry under caps until they learn the game. It’s the right way to do business.

Russell’s contract is not Russell’s fault it’s the league in retrospect Russell would’ve been much better off to sit for his 1st 2 years and understand what the NFL is all about. But the HUGE money forces an immature unprepared young man into a role he is in no way ready to fill. Then he takes all the criticism.

Ken Stabler sat for 5 seasons and still took a year to get his game together. If Russell had half that time we might well have a very different opinion of the young. I was very impressed with 3 yong QB’s who are finally starting to see the light. Alex Smith, Vince Young and Matt Leinert they’ve been in the league and had to sit a year after starting and it has paid very nice dividends. Maybe Russell needs the same opportunity.

  24. Kirk Says:

“Teams would watch our waiver wire,” five-time Pro Bowl wideout Tim Brown said last summer, “because the word around the league was that the Raiders were going to release football players and keep the guys Al likes.”

Sheesh, that’s it in a nutshell!

Did anyone else enjoy the Saints slapping the sh*t out of the Bellicheats?

    I loved it.

  25. armond Says:

you know priest these guys just dont like russell and never will. u remember all the fried chicken and barbeque and gumbo insults these fools were sayin when we drafted him. his struggles just bring out whats already been there. young guys develope at their own pace regardless of the money and what we want. the rules of the game dont change just cuz the money does. thats life.

  26. priesttj Says:

Even Tom Brady needs time to be effective. He threw picks that are very unlike the future HOFer. But that’s what happens when you pressure any QB.

  27. Kirk Says:

That’s why it is important to blitz. We really are the dumbest team in football.

  28. priesttj Says:

Armond, you right but I’m through arguing with a bunch of hatemongers. Russell is so very young that he needed a lot more time to develope than I anticipated. This benching is for his own good and the Raiders arw trying to salvage him by letting him sit and get the crowd off his back. The Titans were able to give Vince some sorely needed time away from the pressure and allow him to see the game differently. Sometimes when that happens your own issues become very clear and you now can approach things properly.

  29. priesttj Says:

It worked very well for Michael Huff.

  30. priesttj Says:

See what I mean Kirk thinks all you have to do is blitz and that solves your defense. they don’t understand that blitzing exposes a defense not the other way around. We don’t have the type of players that are great blitzers well we didn’t until lately.

They believe we never blitzed before now. Our histroy is we blitz but we blitz great players that can get there. Like Ted Hendricks and those great players we had back then. Kirk Morrison and T Hqward tend to not get there and then you’re over exposed. But fans will be fans.

  31. Raider75 Says:

    Priest…

Are you saying if I think Russell sucks and will never be an NFL QB that its because he’s African-American?

  32. armond Says:

bottom line is russell needs to grow up, cable should get fired and al davis needs to get football people in here to clean this mess up. last but not least these players need to understand what theyve become in the league. unfortunately some of these guys they are what they are and have to go. ive seen enuff of kelly morrison carlisle warren etc to know we need to upgrade these positions. morrison isnt a very skilled lb period. hes decent at best and would benefit playin with a dominant lb core than to headline a group himself. kelly doesnt make enuff game changing plays and our right side oline isnt physical or talented enuff to win 1 on 1 matchups to win. bottomline we need a makeover with physical players. we also need some GRADE A AZZHOLES who will bend the rules even when we dont need to. the mentality on this team is too soft to win which is another reason we arent a good come from behind team. thats why i like brandon spikes, dude is an ornery heffa.

  33. priesttj Says:

75, what the hell are you talking about? who said anything about that?

Armond, I’ll take Spikes and several others I wont mention right now. But we get a chance to draft a great player and this time we need an immediate impact player. Spikes qualifies IMO.

  34. armond Says:

watchin VY on sunday made me smile the whole time on his drive cuz it was like watchin him in college again. he had the same cool quiet swagger at texas and just like the rose bowl he came thru. i was even happier to see that he won that game with his arm which is what people said he couldnt do. he was a qb not some rinky dink wildcat scrambler people sayin he was. it made me think that could be russell next year if he and the raiders get their act 2gether.

  35. NorthernD Says:

Perhaps sitting on the bench will work for JaMarcus.
The reason why people get so upset with him is that he lacks the traits that the rest of us are forced to have.
JaMarcus has as much, or more physical talent than anyone in, well, the world. But he lacks the focus and motivation to get the job done. I think he would catch a lot less hatred if he at least tried harder, or gave the impression of trying. Most people will never know what it’s like to flick a football 70 yards, but most people do know about having to get up early, stay late, work extra hours. We do it because we have to.

  36. priesttj Says:

It could very well be Russell. People were saying the same things about Alex Smith and Matt Leinert.

It takes 5 years to learn that position, not to say their aren’t misses but when you have a talent like Russell you better make damn sure before you give up on him. The short time he’s played in this league is nothing in terms of determining what type of player he will eventually be. All the hatemongers look at preripheral things that have nothing to do and then they exagerate everything.

  37. priesttj Says:

NorthenD, you have no idea what he does all you know is what you read. So stop talking in absolutes.

    Russell is young and immature………period.

  38. armond Says:

priest i hate 2 say but we really blew it on dhb this year. i root for him but he was more of a luxury than dmc. dmc and russ were at the top of their conference dhb wasnt. we had so many directions on oline and lb, cushing wouldve been PERFECT!!! then we would only need mlb next year. i can name a bunch of wr coming out next year better than dhb. briscoe kansas /bryant ok st. /damain williams usc /lafelle lsu /tate and floyd notre dame / gilyard cinci / shipley texas top of my head.

  39. NorthernD Says:

There’s know way Davis has pulled the plug on Russell yet. He’s probably penciled in as next year’s opening day starter.
But maybe that’s part of the problem as well. He’s knows he’s going to get another shot. He’s got too much talent to let walk away.
Matt Leinert was also a guy who was not a great worker. He has the reputation of being a hollywood party boy. That may have delayed his progress as well.

    ……….

Oh, sorry dude. It was Armond making reference to fried chicken jokes.

I was all for the Russell pick. Dude just doesn’t look the same as he did at LSU.

He came out of LSU throwing on the run, making plays with his legs, and had a smooth throwing motion. He was having FUN!!!

Now he stands in one place, throws off his back foot, and just looks tight. He is not having FUN.

Some guys can handle the pressures of the NFL and some guys can’t.

  42. armond Says:

i think we might draft another wr next year. i really like briscoe of kansas. i was hopin he wouldve come out this year but he was a sophmore. its important whatever players we get next offseason they are physical. fb has to be addressed whether oneal is healthy or not. not addressing that has hurt our running game bigtime. id prefer to go back to the big power oline than the zbs. its not about systems its about talent. everybody went on and on about the system and now they hate it. great PLAYERS make great systems. a power running system may fit dmc and bush much better anyway.

  43. NorthernD Says:

Yes, I am basing my opinion on what I read. I don’t have access to his personal life. But those that do have said that he is not a great worker and he doesn’t put the time in. I know hearsay evidence is not acceptable in court, but this is just a blog.

  44. armond Says:

75 i was pointing out whoever said the stuff i mentioned. they know who they are and thats that. u are right about him not looking the same and part of it is his fault and the rest is the organization. my point was that there are people on here who never have and never will like the dude and made it clear thru racist comments. i dont know why people act like that doesnt exist just cuz some people in here dont let that affect their decision about him.

  45. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Congratulations New Orleans, hitting that 11-0 mark. 4 years and 3 months ago, New Orlean’s poorest citizens huddled into that very same venue to shelter themselves from the biggest storm to hit the country in recent memory, many, perhaps most of them, being women and children, watched the storm rip parts of the ceiling right off of the dome, as they sat there helpless and horrified. And, that would only be the beginning of a week long hell, caused partly by natural disaster, partly by poverty, partly by the state and federal government’s failure to serve it’s soul purpose, to protect citizens from disaster when they are unable to protect themselves, and perhaps even by a faulty levee built at grade, or even worse, by builders who didn’t find it feasible to exhaust resources protecting wards that would only occupy former slaves and their descendants.

I wonder if it crossed Steve Young’s Brigham Young prepped, Carmen Policy San Fran Niner seasoned brain, the shear hell on earth that took place amongst those funky, multi colored seats behind him just 4 years ago as he ran down his review of tonight’s game. I know Mike Tirico thought about it. Perhaps Jaws and Chucky, too, if for only a moment.

Tonight’s game was a statement. Don’t kid yourself. A little running up the score, Belichick style, was Sean Payton’s way of letting the NFL know that they’d better get used to a new dynasty. The Aints are a thing of the past. The Saints, are marching in. Snatching up FAs like McKenzie has shades of the kind of FA netting that Dallas, SF, and GB used to do late season when the league belonged to them a decade ago.

Raider fans need not waste their time or mere daydreams finding comparisons between “Mr. Davis’s baby” and what you’re seeing in “Norlins” right now. They are two different universes, football speaking, and the Raiders are not just a draft pick or head coach away from getting there. It’s really almost like comparing hell to heaven. There’s no more astute way to put it. Hell to heaven. The closest the Raiders’ have come to experiencing such a rejuvenation in recent memory was probably the overtime victory vs. the Niners in ‘00. In short, the Raiders become what the Saints are today when hell freezes over. And I mean that literally.

  46. armond Says:

if we are going to suck the rest of the year i just would atleast like to be in a position to get suh from nebraska next year. now thats who we want playin next to seymour. price from ucla is a good one too.

  47. priesttj Says:

I say he is young and immature because I know it. I’m not reading it, I’ve seen it. I’ve raised 3 children and gthey all degrees and are doing well but like me they went through some very serious problems due to immaturity. Russell is no different he’s just rich.

Armond, DHB IMO wouldn’t have been drafted in the 1st rnd. Brian Cushing is the guy I wanted all along and we could’ve drafted Rey-Rey in the 2nd rnd. Jut think if we had traded down and dracted Chris Johnson and then got and OT instead of DMC. Not that I don’t like DMC. But I would trade him straight up fro CJ right now.

I like what we did in late rnds but I would never have drafted DHB that high.

  48. priesttj Says:

Armond, Suh and some others are very good prospects but we have to see what we do in FA 1st before we start deciding what we should do in the draft.

We did very well IMO in this draft it’s just with DHB the results be slow to realize. I do believe DHB is going to be an outstanding talent but we have to be very patient he is just now learning the position. But he is a phenomal talent that just needs time to develope.

  49. Raider75 Says:

I remember when I was younger and before every season I would pick the Raiders to win the Super Bowl because I really believed any year could be their year.

    Those were the days.

  50. armond Says:

priest the reason i say suh is cuz i dont see any dt in fa that may be that good at the nfl level as he is in college. then again we didnt think seymour was available either. ofcourse id take cj for dmc now but my point was dhb was much more of luxury especially without the production of dmc. i have my doubts about dhb for me to be patient but i will. he is too much of a project when we needed help now and the future. i dont see him being better than harvin anytime soon or close to him. i also felt like there are too many wrs next year to pick from that would be better than him even if he stayed in college.

In the 2001 NFL Draft the Raiders chose Derrick Gibson with the 28th Pick in round 1

    The next 4 picks

    Ryan Pickett – who cares
Reggie Wayne – Looking for 6th straight 1,000 yard season
Todd Heap – 316 receptions for 3658 yards and 26 touchdown. 2 800 yard seasons as a TE
Drew Brees – Could have replaced Gannon (Marques Tuiasosopo was picked later in that round)

and oh yeah, a few picks after Brees was a young WR who used to be named Chad Johnson.

    2002 Draft
28th pick – Napoleon Harris (Raiders)
    29th pick – Ed Reed

Drafts like these destroy football teams.

  53. Raider75 Says:

    2003 Draft

2nd Round – Raiders select TE Teyo Johnson

    6 picks later

3rd Round – Cowboys select TE Jason Witten

Al Davis f’s up another pick. He was looking for a TE and chose the wrong one.

Could it be because he can’t recognize talent?

I can see that here he took a Pac-10 guy over a Tenn. guy, but how did he miss on Todd Heap (Arizona) and Chad Johnson (Oregon State)?

  54. NorthernD Says:

Davis has always liked the big fast safety. Davis would never draft Ed Reed because he doesn’t have the measurables. Same as Bob Sanders.
Instead he takes a flyer on Mike Mitchell because he’s 220 and ran a 4.45. Derrick Gibson and Patrick Bates also fit the same mould.
The two biggest draft blunders IMO, could be Huff instead of Haloti Ngata, and DHB instead of Crabtree. All Davis picks.

  55. Copenhagen_Fan Says:

If Al really loved the Raiduhs more than himself, then he would hand control over to a big time GM and stay out of the way.

THE TUNA would look good in Silver and Black!

Anytime a WR comes into the NFL and you have to spend wasted time on catching the ball chances are he ain’t gonna be good a 20yr old working on catching the ball I hope he get good because it absolutely sicking to have such a horrible O and of course we still can’t stop the run. Sure wish C. Woodson was here getting DHB,DMAC,Russells money I would take him over all three. Don’t get to excited for next years draft at least the 1 rd its gonna be another bust, but hey Gallery is an ok G not great and a worthless LT with t-rex arms.

  58. BlackSunday32 Says:

Let’s see last year priest raved about Arman Shields hurt all year and didn’t play now cut. He always talks about Nick Miller being the DB killa well hurt all year may not play at all and watch him get cut next year, priest curse is stronger than the Madden Cover period IMO.

  59. 4evaRaider Says:

When Gallery came out of Iowa he was all that.I know we drafted him 4 LT but a real footballer will adjust when needed and he did.Gallery is a footballer, imo

Not gonna lie when in the 1 qt when they lined Fargas and Dmac together in backfield than spread Dmac out I thought for sure they were finally getting it why oh why did Garcia want out he would have been in a lot sooner than Gradowski those home games where the crowd was booing Russell would have been screaming for Garcia.

  67. 4evaRaider Says:

Maybe as a professional he couldnt relate 2 the “distractions” in our beloved Oak-town.Like I’m sure (lol) some things are magnified and others arent but maybe the birth of his kid and his smoking HOT wife had something 2do with it.I also heard of him going 2 Philly but that didnt work-out either

  68. RaiderRockstar Says:

I can’t beleive we’re still holding out hope for Nick Miller to make an impact and contribute this year … there is only 5 games left in the season and only 2 are winnable

  69. RaiderRockstar Says:

Steelers have lost 3 straight, including 1 to KC.

Graddy is going back home, looking to play big in front of his friends & family. This is his 4th year in the league. he should be able to do some things now that he wasn’t able to do in the past. I’m hoping his trend against the Steelers doesn’t continue. those are awful numbers!

    http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1208/is_n36_v220/ai_18645193/?tag=content;col1

  76. vegas raider Says:

When I watched last night’s game, the whole time I was thinking that New Orleans could have started LSU’s O-line and it wouldn’t have stopped them one bit.

Brees in the shotgun, gets rid of the ball so quickly, literally the D has zero chance. The Pats sent the blitz at times, and the blitzer would go untouched, but the ball was out and the WR was already running down the field.

This is a QB’s league right now. Brees is so good and so smart, they are just rotating in RB’s, WR’s and O-line and they don’t skip a beat.

  77. Kirk Says:

After watching the Saints last night, I wonder how we managed to win even 3 games this year.

  78. 4evaRaider Says:

    Morning Vegas!!!

    Be Back L8er NATION!!!

  79. Kirk Says:

The QB position in the NFL has become like the point guard in basketball. Brees pump fakes on almost every play to keep the defense off guard. Farve does the same thing. We need to teach our QBs to do the same this as well.

  80. los raiders de don rober Says:

  82. Charlie Says:

    Vegas

I do not agree with your assessment regarding the Oline at all.
Most of what the Saints do is predicated on superior Oline play.
The simple threat of the run impacts the defensive alignment.
The Oline repeatedly picked up the blitz which allows Brees to STEP INTO THROWS and not just get the ball off.

Just the threat of pressure caused Brady to misfire on several attempts.
The Patriots got beat on the line of scrimmage which is why they lost. Brees is not a better QB than Brady and the Saints do not have a better WR than Moss.
No one schemes better than Belichick.
What the Saints did was render the Patriots skill people useless as did the Giants in the Super Bowl by beating the Pats Oline.

  83. vegas raider Says:

    Charlie Says:
    December 1st, 2009 at 7:38 am

Brees is not a better QB than Brady and the Saints do not have a better WR than Moss.

    ************************************

Right now Brees is light years ahead of Brady. Tom’s momentum killing awful int, thrown into double coverage, was the biggest play of the game.

You are crazy with this O-line stuff Charlie. The Saints replaced 2 O-lineman from last year, and you couldn’t tell. That’s 40% of the starting O-line from a team that threw for 5,000 yards, and they will throw for 5,000 yards again this year.

If they replace the QB this offseason, they will not throw for anywhere close to 5,000 yards next year. If they brought in the Raiders O-line, they would come close.

  84. vegas raider Says:

You say “Most of what the Saints do is predicated on superior O-line play.”

I say, “EVERYTHING the Saints do is predicated on the best QB in the NFL right now.”

  85. vegas raider Says:

So the Saints changed this year: TE, are working in a new RB and altering the carries differently than last year, replaced their leading WR last year (Lance Moore) and overhauled 40% of their O-line.

The three constants: QB, Coach and production.

  86. Charlie Says:

    Vegas

Put Brees behind Cleveland’s Oline and he would be on IR.

    Brees better than Brady?
You need to watch more football.
If Brees is so wonderful then why was he traded from the Bolts?
He nearly had his career ended in SD because he was getting hammered due to a weak Oline.

Dilfer won with Baltimore because of superior line play. Dilfer was an average QB.

Plunkett nearly had his career ended because of weak Oline play before he came to the Raiders.

Just spend a game not looking at the ball. Watch the line.

  87. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

What I got from the Patrick Bates article is that JaMarcus is probably being conditioned by Lincoln Kennedy.: “Kennedy suffered from weight problems – according to one teammate, be set the Waffle House record by consuming 21 cheeseburgers at one sitting.”
    IMHO

  88. vegas raider Says:

    Charlie,

Can we live in the now please? Jim Plunkett….who the hell cares that was 25 years ago?

A completely different game right in today’s NFL, and I think it changed about 3-4 years ago. Every rule that has been implemented recently is to protect the QB, and help the passing offense.

And why are you ragging on the Cleveland O-line, they drafted O-line in the first round 2 of the last 3 years? I thought that was what you were all about, building the lines, blah blah blah.

Dilfer won a SB because of their D. They went over a month without an offensive TD!!!

And today, Brees is a better QB than Brady, no doubt about it. Tom has a lot of miles and blew out his knee last year, and has obviously taken a step backwards. Brees is at the height of his game, Tom is not.

  89. vegas raider Says:

    Charlie,

The Super Bowl last year was played with two teams, with 1 (Steelers) whose O-line was their achillies heel, and another whose O-line (Cardinals) was average.

Neither one could block in the game. Arizona’s LT had FOUR penalties in the game and they almost one.

Pittsburgh game-winning drive started with a holding call and first and 20. Ben was running around all game, but he and Holmes made enough plays to off-set all the plays Warner and Fitz were making.

I’m not saying too neglect the O-line, hell I would support drafting O-line in the first round this year, we are due to address that position. But today’s NFL is all about QB and coaching.

Look at the Panthers, they have a very good D and O-line and easily the best 1-2 RB combo. But they stink due to Delhomme being awful. Put any of the top 15 QB’s on that team and they are in the playoffs. Take their O-line and put it on the Raiders, and we still suck. Why? QB and coaching.

  90. vegas raider Says:

I gotta run, but go ahead and reply Charlie and I will read it later.

QB and coaching, everything else is secondary. QB’s make great O-lines, not the other way around.

  91. 4evaRaider Says:

Over the summer someone posted an article about Brees.A company got 10 Olympic archers from the American team and set up a bull-eye.The 10 American Olympic archers hit 50%.From the same distance Brees hit the bulls-eye 10 times out of 10 times for 100%,of course this means the archers hit 5 out of 10 times.Four times out of the 10 bullseyes Brees hit,hit the DEAD CENTER of the bulls-eye.The diameter of the nose of the football was the same diameter of the bullseye.Brees is more accurate than 10 Olympic Archers…as a matter of fact Brees is light-years ahead of any nfl QB of any era,imo

  92. 4evaRaider Says:

    biblical indeed,Vegas!!!

  93. 4evaRaider Says:

Hey Exla…congratulations on your lees than 1 point victory in FF…you earned it!!!

  94. Charlie Says:

I agree that you must have excellent QB play to win in the NFL.
My point is that no QB can be excellent if he does not have the time to throw and if he does not have the threat of the run.
Those elements will never happen without an Oline that CONSISTENTLY wins its matchups.

Again I go back a few years but one of the best pure QB’s I ever saw was Archie Manning.
Absolutely amazing what he could do. Yet his career was horribly damaged by a weak offensive line that nearly got him killed.

The Saints last night actually were playing McCallister at corner and got away with it becasue their Dline was winning the line of scrimmage battle.

Getting to the point regarding the Raiders.
We have had Collins, Moss and Turner and they all failed miserably because of a weak supporting cast which was the Oline on offense. They have all succeeded since they left because they play behind Olines far better than what we have in Oakland.
The Panthers do not have good Oline play. Nor does Detroit or Cleveland. You can always look at a few highlight plays but good Oline play means winning the majority of the batlles week in and week out, not once in while against a weak opponent.
When the Raiders play a good Dline we are not even competitive. Until our Oline play improves significantly we will NEVER be a winning team regardless of the coach or QB.

Steelers expect Roethlisberger to play Sunday

PITTSBURGH (AP) Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has worked out without problems since missing Sunday night’s game in Baltimore with a concussion. He is expected to resume practicing Wednesday.

Coach Mike Tomlin says Roethlisberger has not had any headaches since Friday. He is expected to play Sunday against Oakland barring any further complications.

Roethlisberger’s post-practice headaches last week were brought on by physical activity. Ateam doctor recommended he not play during the 20-17 overtime loss in Baltimore.

The quarterback sustained his fourth concussion since 2006 and his second in less than a year during an overtime loss in Kansas City on Nov. 22.

    Greetings Nation!

I know the draft is a crapshoot but we did draft good players who our coaches can’t get the most out of or just plain don’t know how to use them.

Let’s go back to the last time we were good. Jon Gruden. He knew how to use the players and motivate them.

Then Norv Turner: Can call plays but cannot motivate guys on defense and does not have a strong personality.

Art Shell: Old school dude who had talent here but did himself in with the Bed & Breakfast. Plus his protection schemes required Hall of Fame Linemen to run it, according to the players themselves.

Lane Kiffin: was going places until he got pissed about not getting Arkansas job. Downhill from there.

Tom Cable: Still trying to figure out the following:

    How to motivate JaMarcus.
How to get DMAC the ball.
    How to call plays.
How to make sure Fargas gets (x) amount of carries.
    How to protect the QB.
How to use a player after they make a mistake.
    How to use Kirk Morrison.
    How to use Thomas Howard.
How to get DHB to catch the ball.
How to get DHB sent to the bench.
How to find Javon Walker’s uniform and helmet.
How to get John Marshall to stop the run.
    How to stop beating women.
    How to keep Hanson quiet.
How to say the right things to keep his job next year.

At least the entire Nation is aware that we are getting close to finding these things out. We are also aware that we are close to the last game of the season.

Lets face it Nation, the last 7 years of excitement has come from the off-season. Our season is the off-season.

Don’t lie. Every true Raider fan in here is looking forward to two things: Our next coach and draft. These next 5 games are just fodder leading up to that.

Weak at LB to start with. Ricky Brown probably wouldn’t have “won” the start anywhere else. Then when he got hurt, Alston got concussed, so we’re bouncing guys around, but moving Howard sucks. I understand it, but it sucks.

Fullbacks another spot we’ve been dinged and thin at for the last 2 yrs at least.

Asking Oren to come back from a near amputation was too much. Lorenzo was one year too far gone and one year too late for us. Gary Russell couldn’t make another NFL team and Luke Lawton couldn’t even get work on practice squads till hge showed up in oaktown.

You take DMC 4th overall, you luck into Bsuh in the 4th and rehab him for a solid year then you hamstring these guys with sh*t fullbacks?!!!

Let’s bring back Griffin. Or Zac!

    ========================

I was surprised when they let Griffin go, but thought Oren was going to be ok I guess was their thinking…Griffin suffered the knee injury last year but watched him play for Seattle last week end. Not great, but not bad…better then our scrubs!

  140. DMAC Says:

I like that kid Sydquan from Cal. Good coverage and very physical.

I suggest the Raiders draft another cornerback!

    ***

    I agree with you, M

Bowie is already gone and Routt sucks. CJ is getting older

    draft a CB!

    ==============================

    Taylor Mays USC.

Moving Huff to CB? Who knows with these wacky Raiders…

  142. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

After wanting skill players in the last 4 drafts, I have changed to wanting stud lineman and linebackers. We are too weak up front and in the middle.

  143. RaiderRockstar Says:

pay Jon Ritchie $5 million per year to come out of retirement. we need somebody that can block at FB !

  144. DMAC Says:

How about we sign turd sands to play fb.

  145. 4evaRaider Says:

I dunno Stopwatch…Tho Cable needs to learn things,I for one am quite happy with what he has done in a short time with the inherited mess.Looks like a coach who will bust you in the mouth,if needed.Wants nothing MORE than 2 coach da Raiders…except 4 da Raiders to be the Kings again. All we can do,as ever,is wait and see,but Cable will right this ship, imo

  146. Nnamdi21 Says:

Peace out Raider nation. We deserve better!

Enjoy the day all and thanks for keepin us posted Jerry!

  147. Nnamdi21 Says:

Lets get Troy Smith from the Ravens at QB and make the trade for Glen Dorsey and Dwayne Bowe this off season…

  148. RaiderRockstar Says:

Samson Satele, Cooper Carlisle & Cornell Green are premier players in this league. We’re lucky to have them.

Same with Tommy Kelly, Gerrard Warren, William Joseph & Desmond Bryant. I can’t think of a more solid DT rotation in the league!

the lines are fine guys. we need help at the skill positions, Russell can’t do it alone!

  149. DMAC Says:

Let’s trade our pick for Urlacher!

  150. los raiders de don rober Says:

If I were an NFL owner this would be my spending priorities:
    1. Coaching
    2. QB
    3. Defensive Line

    Al’s spending priorities:
    1. DBs
    2. WRs
    3. Defensive Line

  151. 4evaRaider Says:

Yep…I also covet the FB position, especially because of who we are and how we use the FB.Still a nightmare with OO…here I thought was our answer at FB…OO and Bush…OO and Dmac…OO and Fargas…OO and Grads on a play-action.OO getting the 4 yards late in the game 2 kill the clock and the other teams dreams.Yes indeed…I had and still have hopes 4 OO

  152. los raiders de don rober Says:

    Lets get a coach, and a qb…

  153. RaiderRockstar Says:

Let’s trade our pick for Urlacher!

Urlacher would call JaMarcus a pu$$y and Al Davis would cut him immediately

  154. RaiderRockstar Says:

” JaMarcus Russell is a good quarterback. Get over it! ”

  155. AlDavis Stopwatch Says:

As far as drafting a LB,

I would look at some of those SEC linebackers. The Florida guy (Spikes) and the South Carolina guy (forget his name but is MLB) stand out to me.

  156. DMAC Says:

    Front 7
    Ellis
    Kelly
    Seymore
    Shaunessey
    Howard
    Urlacher
    Morrison

  160. AlDavis Stopwatch Says:

Morrison was/is being phased out since training camp. Howard since the bye is on the same path. I think the only thing that saves those guys at this point is a new Coach/DC and scheme.

  161. RaiderRockstar Says:

gotta get back to work. later gents!

  162. Dakota Says:

Anything new and exciting in Raider land?

  163. 4evaRaider Says:

I like Howard he still young and so is Kirk…not saying to get rid of them but if Scott can be a better Will so be it…if Kirk can be a good Sam so be it.But we REALLOY need a true MLB
