What will Raiders do with Russell?
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 10:42 am in Oakland Raiders.
Excellent overview by beat writer Steve Corkran in today’s Bay Area News Group papers on how the Raiders may deal with the poor performance of quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
Using unnamed sources is never ideal, but sometimes necessary. The key is being fairly certain the unnamed source isn’t using anonymity to further an agenda or take a cheap shot, as opposed to giving an honest opinion which helps enlighten an issue.
The story only enhances what I’ve thought to be the case all along _ no way the Raiders part ways with Russell because of a bad season. Al Davis has a history of being very patient with draft picks, including players such as Robert Gallery and Nnamdi Asomugha who eventually flourished.
Davis is also not likely to be swayed by the media jumping to conclusions on Russell being a “bust,” having already pointed out to USA Today that “can’t miss” picks such as Troy Aikman and John Elway had rough starts.
You could add Vince Young and Alex Smith to that list this season. Although neither is guaranteed to eventually justify their draft status, both players benefitted from doing what Russell is doing right now _ sitting, watching and learning.
Pre-practice update
Defensive end Greg Ellis, who has not practiced all week, walked out slowly to the practice field, helmet in hand, to join his position group.
Trevor Scott, the defensive end-turned-weakside linebacker, continued to get private instruction during special teams drills from defensive coordinator John Marshall and linebackers coach Mike Haluchak.

Ok, since we are most likely not gonna part, maybe we can renegotiate with an incentive laden contract. One could hope anyways…

Platooning 3 rb’s isn’t working.
You know one of those 3 will be in some kind of trade package offer.
Unfortunately the team can’t decide, week to week, who the starter is/should be.
Posters here about seem almost evenly split on who should be carrying the rock, although Bush’s stock seems to have dropped lately, where McFadden stock fluctuates on a weekly basis. Fargas is rarely given credit, but always seems to bust out when all but given up for dead.
——————————————————-
You can say that again. People we all over me when I was suggesting we take that 2nd rounder that Tampa was allegedly offering for Bush. I even said fine, give them McFadden, but what good does a backup RB getting 5 or 6 carries a game do us when we could get an everydown player with that 2nd rd pick?
At this point, I think I would stick with McFadden. My problem is Cable and his zero creativity. I’d play McFadden at WR AND RB, I’d give him about 10-15 touches out of the backfield with screens and slant runs instead of these power I dives.
Fargas is more than an adequate backup.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Of course they won’t get rid of Russell, he has at least 1 more Leaf like season in him then out of the NFL for mr. commitment my fav was during bye week he actually spent 1 of his 3 off days looking at film wow 1 whole day that good ol Iverson type work ethic.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:51 am
JR would be an idot to renegotiate a “G” contract for incentives. They should have been written into the original deal. Too late. He will never get $32Mil again. Why should he roll the dice. Allen Davis, you are stuck. Not smarter than a 5th grader at this point.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:51 am

I wonder if Jadeadly can hit? Maybe he can play MLB for us.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Problem is McFadden seems to be fast approaching “injury prone” label.
guy gets hurt getting out of bed, it seems.
Most rb’s love/need reps to “get in the flow” during a game..usually not performing as well when inserted herky jerky. But McFadden’s body doesn’t seem to be able to take that kind of punishment, especially with his spindly legs, that resemble Ticonderoga #2 pencils.
Want amazing?
that #6 rushing game of couple of years ago, that added Bush and McFadden, which then dropped to 14th.. and not sure this year..obviously way down..just might end up with zero top rb’s in the bunch.

I know I might encite a riot here, but the O-line really just needs some competition and probably a new RG.
In the two games since Bruce started, against 2 top 10 D’s, we have given up one sack and averaged close to 5 yards a carry.
With crap at the skill positions!!!!!
——————————————————-
Vegas, STOP IT!
Grads was constantly under pressure, had like 2 seconds to throw the ball.
RT AND RG must be addressed.

Stanley Roberts, a NBA player, could have been a All-World. The problem was he did not have the will to win, or desire to improve. Initially he got by on God given talent, then he ate his way out of the league. Now he is broke and working as a security guard. Sound familiar?

JR is an idiot, but unfortunately, his agent is not. And you are right, they should have put incentives in the original deal. our only hope is, with the new CBA that they do like the NBA and put in a rookie salary cap, or we are gonna be screwed for years salary cap wise as high as we are drafting.

Barret Rudd or Dameco Ryans would be a nice addition in the middle.

December 4th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Sorry Jhill, just they way I feel.
And hey I said RG needs to be replaced and more competition is needed. Who has played the Cowboys this year and had all day to throw? A good D-line always beats a good O-line, IMO.

Damn good list Assasin …
a FA would be a good way to go on the Oline.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:10 am
McFadden should be molded to be like Darren Sproles.
Return kicks, be a 3rd down back and a guy who catches a lot of passes. And one who rarely takes handoffs between the tackles.
The guy just doesn’t break tackles. None. Ever.

No quarterback will succeed here without a system. Gradkowski’s proof of that. Decent QB skills, can run a modern day offense.., etc. Just flat out sucks when he lines up with the Raiders. As any QB would.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:16 am
I didn’t know he looked that bad.

No doubt jhill. Hopefully we get some free agents to compete for C, RG and RT and cornell green is not re-signed.

Creativity and a Tom “4 verticals” Cable offense is like water and oil.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:18 am
You know what Al Davis looks like? A sick man, that his inner circle is too afraid of to intervene with and force to take necessary time off. He looks sick, and isolated. What a hell this man is living in. He’s be better off dead.

If an O-line can have Justin Fargas average 5 yards carry in any game, they aren’t awful.
Give me a new RG, some more competition at C and RT, and some skills players so we aren’t down 2 TD’s so the D is pinning their ears back and they would be good enough. Not great but good enough.

In preparation for Pittsburgh this week, Tom Cable decided to meet up with Art Shell. Since Shell was the last head coach of the Raiders to beat the Steelers, Cable sought his counsel.
Through anonymous sources, JBB was able to attain a transcript of their conversation.
Tom Cable: Coach Shell, thanks for taking the time to meet with me.
Art Shell: Anything to help the Raiders beat those Steelers!
TC: That’s the spirit!
AS: So, what can I do for you?
TC: Well, back in ’06 you were in the same boat I’m currently in while preparing for the Steelers
AS: Yep.
TC: The Steelers were defending Super Bowl champs then just like they are now.
AS: Yep.
TC: You were a lame duck coach then just as I am now.
AS: Yep.
TC: Your offense then was as bad as mine is now.
AS: Time out, Cable. We were scoring in double digits at least.
TC: My apologies. My point is that you were able to beat the Steelers without any help from the offense. How did you do it?
AS: Well, as I recall it…Ben Roethlisberger pretty much gifted us that win by throwing two pick sixes; one to Nnamdi and the other to Chris Carr.
TC: So much for that. Nobody throws at Nnamdi anymore and Chris Carr is gone.
AS: Well, not all is lost. You’ve got more talent on offense than we did. Surely you can get at least one TD out of your unit, right?
TC: Ugghhh…maybe…I mean…
AS: Come on Cable! You’ve got Janikowski. If you can’t get across midfield just start lining up 70-yard field goals. It will save you the time cause if he misses it gives Pittsburgh a shorter field to work with. Which means you’ll get the ball back quicker.
TC: Wow! That’s genius.
AS: If nothing else, at the very least you can just blame your offensive coordinator. I had Tom Walsh ten years removed from the NFL and one month removed from running a bed and breakfast in Idaho. Who is the numskull calling your plays?
TC: Actually…I’m the play caller…
AS: Oh…I hear Roethlisbereger didn’t play last week. Maybe he’ll be out this week too.
TC: They’re saying he’s going to play.
AS: Oh…well…
TC: Some help you are, Shell.
AS: Hey, at least we won back-to-back games in 2006.
TC: Too bad those were the only games you won all year! I’ve already got three wins this year. Suck it!
AS: If it wasn’t for me you’d never have landed JaMarcus Russell with the number one pick.
TC: Is that sarcasm? Very funny, Shell. This is the most emotion you’ve ever shown.
AS: Ask your mom how much emotion I show.
TC: Sure you wanna go there?
AS: Oh, I’m there already. You wanna join me, sweetheart.
TC: Easy, Shell. Judging by that 1993 Raiders’ Starter jacket you’re sporting, I’m guessing you don’t keep up on current affairs. Let’s just say that the last guy who talked to me like that couldn’t yawn without crying after I got done with him.
AS: Let me tell you something, son. This ain’t no Napa Marriott and I’m not going out like Randy Hanson on some phantom sucker punch.
TC: Make your move then…
(Cable lunges at Shell. The two men begin to roll around on the floor.)
TC: I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!
(Al Davis enters the room.)
Al Davis: What the hell? Not again, Cable!
(Cable jumps up helping Shell up as he stands)
TC: Coach Shell was just showing me some new…uh… blocking techniques.
AD: Save it for the police department, Cable.
AS: Ha! Ha! Ha!
AD: Ha! Ha! Ha!
TC: What’s so funny?
AS: He still doesn’t know, does he?
AD: No, this kid is slow to catch on. Look how long it took him to bench JaMarcus.
AS: Ha! Good point.
TC: Somebody like to tell me what’s going on here?
AS: Looks like you’ve got a winner here, Mr. Davis. My work is done.
(Art Shell leaves the room)
TC: Mr. Davis, what was that about?
AD: You poor boy. You just attacked an employee and told him you’d “kill him” and I got it all on hidden camera. I’m firing you for cause now! Gotcha!
TC: What? Coach Shell isn’t an employee any longer.
AD: Wrong! I hired him to be an offensive consultant. Congrats Cable, you just kissed away your contract.
(Al Davis walks out of the room laughing)
(Art Shell sneaks back into the room moments later)
AS: Sorry about that, Cable. Nothing personal, I just needed some money since Walsh laid me off from his bed and breakfast.
TC: Why you…I should just slap you around like some cheap whore.
AS: So, you’ve slapped a woman before?
TC: Wait…I’m not falling for that…
AS: Sorry, Davis said he’d pay me double if I got you to admit to that ESPN report being true.
TC: You’ve done enough! Why don’t you just get out of here now?
AS: Sorry again, man. Look, you want to know how to beat the Steelers?
TC: You serious?
AS: It’s the least I can do.
TC: I’m all ears.
AS: Bench Darrius Heyward-Bey, start Javon Walker, tell John Marshall to blitz Big Ben like he did McNabb, lineup McFadden all over the field, use him in the Wild Hog offense as often as possible, get Zach Miller one-on-one with their slowest linebacker, tell Gradkowski to make two quick reads then take off if he doesn’t see anything, tell Morrison to stay at home and not over commit, and lastly, whatever you do don’t under any circumstances call a fake field goal.
TC: Thanks, Shell! I’m never going to live down that fake field goal.
(Al Davis re-enters the room)
AD: What the hell, Shell? You just compromised the entire operation. Now I’m going to have to fire you for cause too.
AS: What ‘cause’ do you have?
AD: ‘Cause’ you’re nuts. What kind of a stupid gameplan is that? Blitz? Are you serious? Honestly Cable, if you do any of that stuff Shell said I’ll fire you for cause…again! Do you hear me?

That’s the impact of your boy Cable. His 3 back system and forcing the vertical game is directly responsible for that.
Crazy that Ostler predicted this …
Prediction: The Raiders again will be the only NFL team to play man-to-man defense much of the time. Which will work out great, assuming Nnamdi Asomugha’s clone can be located and signed.
Davis didn’t discuss defense, but he did stress that no team can be effective without a long passing game.
“You’ve got to throw the ball deep,” Davis said.
Since Cable will be calling the plays, he had best mix in some long chucks if he doesn’t want to get overhead-projector-ized by midseason.

Some of you guys act as if long passes are ill-thought plays. Prefer the dink and dunk? Drew Brees averaged – yes AVERAGED – 16 yards per attempt and 20 yards per completion a few days ago. Few were the WCO slant and go type.

If you need any more proof that the NFL is all about the passing game right now, look no further than the Jets-Bills games this year. I think the Jets ran for almost 600 yards total in the two contests!!! And they only went 1-1 and the Bills had the ball at the end of the game last night with a chance to win that one.
We’re going to suck until we have a good QB. We won’t be a contender again until we have a great one. Simple as that.

this just in….. dmac still sux. kirk still over runs gaps. nnamdi still whiffs on his shoulder to shin dive type tackles. tommy kelly is far worse than gerard warren. hi eugene still has no idea of responsiblities. grads is still our qb. we as fans still dont give fargas a lil props. dont think he is the greatest, but if we had more that played with his energy, we may be a lil better. and can go on and on. PLAY MIKE MITCHELL.

Chris, neither the Jets or Bills are a Super Bowl contender. Monday night would be a better example to use, because N.O. obviously lit it up. But they can run the ball, too. They’re balanced. They took what New England gave them. We need to be like N.O., not like some mediocre team that aired it out in one game.

What up J.
I’m just suffering through another RAIDER season.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:56 am
When a coach gives a RB 20 plus carries a game, he’s saying “you’re my guy”.
Cable is running scared on making any of those predictions (we know it’s not his call, but obviously he can lean in one of their directions)and seems to be juggling players, hoping “this guy will save my job”.
Flash back-OTA’s where Cable stated, when asked who the starter would be “that will play itself out in camp”
Didn’t Cable say something on the line of will know by week 3? Then moved it to week 4?
and now?? 12 weeks later he STILL doesn’t know who the starter is?
What is wrong with this picture?

December 4th, 2009 at 11:56 am
ManassasMauler,
Dominic Rhodes, MBush, CrashTest, they have all had impact games in the recent past for the Raiders. McFade = 0
blame Al all for this? can’t reckon that connection myself.
McFade will be fine? When. Avg length of RB career in the NFL is 4 years. Half done already with nothing to show for it. but lots of dinero.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Richochet, you’re on top of it, dude. Keep it coming.

That is hilarious!
I have to say I always wondered if Man Ass Mauler was a clever way to describe that maybe he plays MLB for the Ravens or, well, you know …

You’re right, man ass mauler. You do have a better screen name than me. I’ll give you that. (sigh)

Cable will go back to what he did before Oakland, an assistant. That’s all he was ever meant to be. He’s just collecting his check and avoiding being canned for cause. That’s why he’s not doing anything bold. I don’t know if Richochet works with the team and is disgruntled, or what. But pay attention to his comments. He’s connecting all of the dots.
December 4th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Yeh ,I need a pic. Post a pic of you mauling an ass. That would be more entertaining than the long winded skit you typed earlier.
December 4th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
The reason we can’t give any back 20 carries, is that they either ask out of the game, get hurt or fumble.
When you think you have 3 RB’s, you really don’t have any.
December 4th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
I swear to GOD that I never imagined Cable could be this bad. I mean, I know there are so many things I don’t know about what goes on behind the scenes, but you’re right, what is Cable’s plan? At least with Kiffin, Norvel, and Callahan, you could see their impact on Al’s game plan. Heck even Shell had a group of starters that he stuck with. Not settling on Bush or Dmac, or heck even Fargas is a fuggin joke, man!
It’s too easy to day that Al is making the personell choices or else I think we would still see McFadden and Russell starting. Eugene and Fargas over Al’s high draft picks? Gradkowski and a WCO dink and dunk guy in Hackett and Cable? Vertical guy in Tollner?
I honestly don’t know WTF the plan is on offense man! We need a OC in the worst way. I think we should keep Cable but come up with one of those Asst Head Coach/OC positions and relieve dude of playcalling and personell decisions.

cable should go back to coaching the oline. he did that well. better than anybody since the gannon days.
the defense is even worse though. oak needs everything. at least an MLB that is strong enough to break a block. morrison makes a lot of tackles 5-10 yards downfield when he should be playing the other side.

How funny, reading comments by a bunch of people that did not make it out of their first year of High School. Trying to come off as Vince Lombardi in telling the Raiders and Al Davis how to build a team.
I notice it is the same few people that post comment after comment, do you people not have jobs? or any other things you do? I do not mind reading the comment after comment you post, just let off on the “I am some kind of expert” come on.
They put you and Al Davis in a room and you tried to talk football, they would end up bending you over and driving you around the block, get a ####### life.

December 4th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Trade Russell to the Redskins for Colt Brennan + a lineman/linebacker.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
All that may be true too how other drafts rebounded however Russell can’t even talk like he has a solid education and for him to rebound he needs to have one of his left hands removed and or stop eating buttery popcorn before the game. In my opinion if he really put the work in(like he say’s he has) he could be just that good but…I just don’t see it maybe its the coaches who know’s…

If we have to suffer through another season of Jamarcus Leaf, it will be horrible. You can have all the patience in the world, its not going to make JBust any better. The guy has a million dollar arm and a two cent head. He has no passion or desire for the game. Please, Please, Please do not put the Raider fans through another season of watching overthrows and throws at peoples feet. How about his accuracy on screen passes. I mean common, this guy is a total bust. DHB hurt his foot, maybe it we will be lucky and he can miss the next couple of seasons so we don’t have to keep watching dropped passes. Chaz and Murphy should already be the starters. This is the problem with the Raiders, never willing to admit mistakes and move forward. It just pains to see these crappy players still in the silver and black. Who in the world would buy a JBust or DHB jersey? If you did, give it to good will, there is some poor kid in South America who could really use it.
Let’s pray we don’t have to suffer through another season of JBust and DHB…
Fed up Raiders fan!!!
December 5th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Al can be as “patient” as he wishes to be, but it’s pretty obvious that Russell will never be an NFL QB. He needs to worry more about the fans, like myself, who have grown very tired of losing. I can’t stand the thought of throwing another season or two away for Al to realize that he made a huge mistake. Russell is a bust. It’s time to move on. It’s been two bad seasons, and the big dummy hasn’t even proven if he’s worth playing third string.
December 5th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Not to sound redundant but I feel compelled to say it; As a 26 year Raider fan, I can finally say I will no longer root for this team. Al Davis has finally convinced me to part ways. I am not going to waste my time or money supporting a team I have felt should always represent who I am inside and where I’m from (a winner and a Californian). And as far as being patient for the sake of Russel growing into his own; none of us lives for ever and after six years of embarrassment, my waiting is done.
I can’t wait until the new stadium gets built in Industy, CA. And I don’t care who moves in (not the Faiders), I’ll be their new fan, along with my kids. So long to a “Commitment to pathetic selfishness”
