Final: Raiders 27, Steelers 24

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 6th, 2009 at 1:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News, notes and observations:

– Jeff Reed misses 53-yard field goal attempt to open fourth quarter. No way Steelers attempt that kick (Reed’s career long is 50) if they had any respect at all for Oakland offense.

– Fourth-and-1, near midfield, Tom Cable gets it. Gradkowski gets QB sneak for first down.

– Chris Morris in for Satele this drive.

– Pitch to McFadden on left perimeter for first down. What a concept.

– Gradkowski to Schilens, fake sweep right, half-roll left, Schilens gets open against Tyrone Carter and Raiders take the lead with 8:21 left.

Hands down, easily most clutch Raiders drive of the season, coming as it did after Steelers failed on long FGA and disrespected their offense.

– Not a good way to start post-touchdown sequence. Steelers get 38-yard kickoff return from Stefan Logan.

– The Raiders ability to give back is stunning. Roethlisberger to Santonio Holmes, 57 yards. Rashard Mendenhall scores on the next play. Raiders held lead for two plays, 1:08 off the clock.

– Raiders fight back _ touchbacks on back-to-back drives. Gradkowski to Murphy for 75 yards on play-fake, third-and-2. It’s 20-17 with 5:28 left. Ball was actually a tad underthrown, but Murphy had Ike Taylor beaten so badly it didn’t matter.

– Asomugha corner blitz backfires with Roethlisberger pass for first down. Steelers already in Raiders territory.

– Roethlisberger getting all day to pass, antoehr strike to Holmes. He’s got eight catches for 149 yards. He turns broken play (missed handoff with Mendenhall) into an 8-yard run to the 11, first-and-goal at 2-minute warning.

– Hines Ward knows all the tricks _ subtle push off facemask of Chris Johnson on 11-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger.

– Raiders hold on ensuing kickoff (Sam Williams), Gradkowski’s got 1:48 and nearly 90 yards to go.

– Clutch third-and-10 completion to Todd Watkins keeps final drive alive, they’re out to their own 41. Gradkowski hits Louis Murphy to the Steelers 40, hammered by Brett Kiesel as he throws.

– Gradkowski gets a gift on worst throw of day _ Joe Burnett drops sure interception. Next play, Louis Murphy goes up for a jump ball at the 18 and catches it. Steals it from Ike Taylor.

– Delay of game penalty offset by head-high shot by Brian Clark vs. JLH inside the 10. Half the distance. Raiders at 11 with 22 seconds to play. Watkins can’t hold potential touchdown. It was there for the taking.

– Gradkowski to Murphy for touchdown with nine seconds left, touchdown.

Get this _ Gradkowski is 20 of 33 for 308 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions.

The game of his life.

– Roethlisberger wings one into the end zone on final play form 60-plus yards . . . Chris Johnson breaks it up with lots of help.

1We’ve had wins like this before. ‘04 against Denver. Heck, we beat Pittsburgh in ‘06. We never build on the momentum. The Raiders are going to act as if they won the Super Bowl this week, and not even prepare for Washington. Al Davis finds ways to lose. Today was all Gradkowski. You guys were right about him. He’s a “little” better than Russell. Although a lot of this was Steelers D, too. They look awful. The Raiders have to build on this momentum. They won’t.

Props to the WRs for getting involved today. Finally start JLH and Schillens, with a rookie in the slot, and wa-la …

Also, good job of play calling by Cable to go back to heavy run and PLAY ACTION. Also mixed in some misdirection.

    Getting much better at that.

    Great Win!

Now Cable step down as OC and you can coach this team next year!

  28. 504 Raider Says:

Now we may know why DHB mysteriously came up lame today. Cable punched him at the team hotel this morning after complaining about his lack of touches.

  29. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

And now the Davis worshipers are going to come back from their crypts and use this game as evidence that Al still has it. Even though they know it was all Gradkowski.

We did not win with the vertical game. We won by taking what the Steelers gave us. Mainly, Gradkowski taking what Steelers’ coverage shells were giving him. Grad’s got it. More than Russell. But this game does nothing to refute the argument that Al Davis needs to retire. He needs to.

Exactly! Not throwing the ball to DHB 10 times a game makes your QB look a helluva lot better. Should have had the kid rotating with Murphy in the slot.

  65. Try Some Reality Says:

    Exactly M!

    Damn!

It’s been a month already, who gives a fugg about the backup QB?

  71. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

We went in this game with THREE WINS and beat the Super BOWL champions.

Who knows how good Bruce is but he’s one hell of an improvement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  72. RaidingTexas Says:

Still have two very winnable games (Wash/Cle), one somewhat winnable game(Den), and one tough home game (Balt) left on the schedule. This team can go 7-9. No reason it can’t.

  73. Crimedog Says:

The most underrated aspect of the 4th quarter was the protection from the o-line. Those final few drives Grads had time to throw down field. Maybe the o-line plays better for Grads.

  74. Try Some Reality Says:

    – Pitch to McFadden on left perimeter for first down. What a concept.
    =====================================================
LOL. Really. It took all year for fat slob of a coach to realize McFadden needs to be in space.

  75. DT42 Says:

Congrats to the Silver and Black. Everyone can enjoy this win without it messing up you view on the state of the Raiders. (YOU KNOW WHO I AM TALKING TO.) Lets enjoy the win and get ready for next week.

  78. BlackSunday32 Says:

Even Russells mom couldn’t tell you with a straight face he gives us a better chance than Grabs although listing to post game waiting for usual priest call.

  79. Mistabrown Says:

Crimedog the O-line sucks big time. Bruce Satriani can move around in the pocket. One of many things JaBeefalo CANT do.

  80. KoolKell Says:

    Bruce played a helluva game.

  81. aig Says:

    crimedog,

I was about to say the same thing. They picked up the blitz beautifully and FARGAS is da man at blocking. HUGE.

  82. priesttj Says:

The play of JLH early and Murphy late were the difference in this game. The WR’s actually MADE PLAYS it does so much for the confidence of the QB. I think Murphy has finally turned the corner after a ton of gaffs he is much more poised and in control. But starting JLH was HUGE to get the passing game going.

What a concept WR’s that MAKE plays instead of COST plays. A passing game is born.

  83. weaselbit Says:

    Bruce came into his own.
    Real deal.

About to do an interview on ksfo.
    You can listen online..

  84. Mistabrown Says:

JaBeefalo will never see the field again…..period

    The end.

  85. VanHeathen Says:

Maybe this team just believes that Grads gives them a better chance to win…
    I DO!

  86. darkhorse Says:

ahhhh,…this is what it feels like to win,… Buying my Bruce Grad jersey now. the inverted 2 actually has some spunk. switch contracts with the inverted 5.

  87. weaselbit Says:

    Bruce on Ksfo right now.

  88. Roch R Says:

    5 Lead changes
35 pts scored in the 4th qtr
Gradowski playing infront of the home town

A game like this is why I’m a Raiders fan.

This game should go down somewhere in Raider lore.

    Great game guys!! GREAT GAME

  89. Raider75 Says:

Get this _ Gradkowski is 20 of 33 for 308 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions.

    ……..

These are pro stats. Finally, a 300 yard multiple TD game by a Raiders QB.

Please keep DHB on the bench. Murphy, Watkins, and JLH (if he is still alive) should remain the starters.

Gradkowski or Garcia should have been starting from the beginning.

3 games difference right now and the Raiders would still be in the playoff picture.

  90. Crimedog Says:

Im not saying the o-line is great but anyone could tell that they were playing good in the 4th. It was pretty obvious. Yeah, Grads can move, but dont completely dismiss the o-line.

  91. Thec07 Says:

Good Win for the Raiders, good win for ALL YOU DIE HARD FANS that ip spite of Mr. Davis still love the Silver and Black….

  92. doriangray Says:

FUKK ALL U FAKE RAIDER FANS, LIKE KOOL KELL. FUKK YALL. I LOVE AL DAVIS. RAIDER NATION .

  93. aig Says:

    Van,

you know they do. The results are there.

  94. weaselbit Says:

Giving all the credit to evrybody else.

  95. 504 Raider Says:

Russell and DHB should stay on the bench the rest of the season. They should sit next to each other and talk the first half and play pitch and catch the second half. Then Russell wouldn’t have to do that private QB school thingy in Alabama this summer.

  96. KoolKell Says:

The Protection wasn’t great, Bruce made plays, despite.

  97. jhill Says:

    Crimedog Says:

    ——————————————————-

Totally disagree with that. Grads’ mobility and the playcalling actually is what go us over today. Steelers were biting HARD on the PA fakes in the 4th qtr. ALL of the big throws were off PA. Grads had to throw that ball up to Murphy at the end because of helluva pressure.

  98. Try Some Reality Says:

And here comes dumsh1t to undermine Gradkowski’s performance in this game. LOL!

  99. manassamauler Says:

best win the raiders have had since they won in denver in 2004. gradkowski has a lot of heart and is a LOT better than jabustus. Maddenraider is an idiot for thinking japorkrine could have EVER done what grad did today. no chance in hell. Great win, but my question is why did it take cable so damm long to bench the deadbeat jabustus? grad should have been starting since week one. i bet oak has a few more wins if grad had been starting all year.

oh well 4-8 at least it looks like we have found a good QB for next year.

  100. aig Says:

Crime was referring to the 4th Qtr. Bruce was throwing on that last drive from the pocket and fargas picked up the blitz time and again.

  101. Mistabrown Says:

    Let J Walker play.
    Let Fargas sit down.
Let DHB stub his toe every sunday morning.
Let Cable fire himself as OC.
Let JLH talk to a shrink.
    Let priesttj go F himself.

  102. priesttj Says:

Gradkowski gave the WR’s a chance to make plays and they FINALLY made them. My hat’s off to the Great Gradkowskiyou must give credit where credit is due and he got it done. Beating the Steelers in Pittspuke is HUGE. The Oline played very well late.

I would think that finally the Raider fans in here understand just how much of an impact Fargas makes on this team. Nothing special but very very solid and productive.

  103. Tonio Says:

  123. Crimedog Says:

I dont believe you guys. Considering that our line has consistently been destroyed by crappy teams and this was against the Steelers who are arguably the best pressure team in the NFL, how can you say the o-line did not do well in the the 4th quarter?? C’moooon Maaaaaaan!!

  124. Roch R Says:

Anybody else get butterflies when the Steelers got the ball back with 8 seconds left??

I kept thinkin, the game is in the bag, nobody can come back with 8 seconds.

    Then I thought…but this is the Raiders…

Anything can happen in a Raiders game.

Then hail mary throw…i’ll tell ya’ the Steeler WR had position on that throw, alot of hands around though.

But fact is this was a Raiders game, that’s what watchin the Raiders is all about, it’s about the Roller Coaster.

at least we know going into this game we can catch the ball on both sides of the field.
    ======================================================
This game becomes very interesting now. I think Murphy and Schilens and Miller gives THREE reliable pass catchers. First time all freekn year.

Schilens and Miller the main targets and Murphy in a support role…read not leading role.

Now, will the “cerebral” Tom Cable figure out a way to get DMAC involved in more than dives up the middle?

I think DHB being on the bench made the biggest difference……..

Murphy fights for the ball, makes the catches, runs the routes and blocks.

Oh, and JLH being on the field helps too.

I would like for Tom Cable to step down from OC next year.

  155. Crimedog Says:

I agree with that too. The PA touchdown to Schilens was wide open because they did it on 1st down. Finally did something was wasn’t completely predictable based on down and distance. Gradkowski is also soooooooo much better than JaWalrus at the PA fakes which are an underrated part of a QBs game.

  156. DarthPirate Says:

So uh, maybe Murphy should be starting?

  157. aig Says:

    Dorian,

Suh is not going to be around. You have a DT that plays soccer (quick on his feet), that leads the team in tackle from the DT position, that has 10 passes defended for the year, that had 4.5 sacks yesterday along with 12 tackles from the DT pos. He should be the heisman winner imo.

He solidify his status as the #1 pick. Unless al is goign to trade up again, we will not have a shot at him.

  158. priesttj Says:

I’m a Raider fan first and foremost and whoever helps us win I’m 1,000% behind no matter how they do it. My thoughts exactly and we will draft that way in 2010.
OT in first round and DT in round two.

We are starting to gell a bit but our line play is still soft.

The coaching staff will absolutely stay here and continue to build on continuity.
We finished with a pretty marginal OLine and I am amazed we did what we did today.

The only shot at getting him is trading up by Al. Maybe Al gives up #1 pick and Nnamdi as part of the package to whoever holds that spot. Nnamdi’s contract is really a 2 year cuz 3 yr is option and no way Raiders pick up that option.

Corner is overrated position. You win in the trenches.

I agree with Oline being the focus and it will help the defense.
Bottom line is our defensive tackles do not make enough plays and do not provide enough face pressure on passes.
When you factor in the money Kelly and Warren make it is a joke.
    Our Dline needs more work.
I called Sands(not hard to do) and Burgess leaving this year.
Warren is gone next year and Kelly will have a new salary or he will be gone as well.

Draft the best available Defensive Tackle or Linebacker in the 1st round. Warren is in his 10th year anyway and Kelly is very expensive for his production.

Get the best available. We have good defensive ends with Ellis, Seymour, Scott, Shaughnessy, Richardson….we need a REAL DT prescence or Linebacking prescence.

    Russell didn’t deserve to start
    DHB didn’t deserve to start
    DMAC didn’t deserve to start

Yet they did. All year long. And hence the season was thrown away before it started.

When Gannon came I didn’t care for him much either but when I saw he would take the team and win I had to defend that. And I did against a lot of Raider fans that wanted Kerry Collins to start. I have a good friend who literally hated Gannon and when he lost the SB said that he finally showed his true colors. That is SAD!!

We all know Grads may not win a champioship but for right now he is what we neeed…..period.

Boy!! all of a sudden the big BUST Alex Smith is playing some very good football. So is Vince Young. Proving there is hope for Russell if he dedicates himself to the game. A Smith looks good!!

Let’s leverage their skills by building the Oline in 2010.

Dline needs help as well but I think we can get sufficient help in round two.

Oaklands protection was decent against Blitzburgh after he came in. Granted, Grad scrambled and bought time, with Satele and Gallery out and Morris and Walker in, Oakland did pretty well to come away with the win.

The run game pretty mcuhcollapsed when Gallery went out though. Hope his back isn’t bad and he’s on the line next week…

Because this team should have been at this level to begin with. I am elated by the win…but disappointed that it again takes us until week 12 to figure it out.

I also think that today highlights how inept Russell and DHB really are.

The fact that those two BUSTS are still on the roster should give us all pause…because you know there is a good chance they get back on the field

Those long plays came off PA, not out of the shotgun. The 2 minute drive was out of the shotgun, you’re right about that. And, now that I think about it, we did line up in the shotgun and ran out of it. toss sweeps to fargas even on third down. My bad on that.

    ——————————————————

    lol, Lefty ….

Actaully, this game was called like Cable was calling the games at the end of last year. I don’t think we saw the shotgun ONE time today. Taking DHB off the field got rid of all the vertical routes, IMO.

PA rollouts? I don’t think I’ve seen that all year, and that would include Grad’s previous starts. And really, until the 4th qtr, I didn’t see it much this game.

Great 4th qtr man, that’s all I can say.

    ================================

We DID see the shotgun today several times. We also saw the vertical routes several times too! IN fact, Gradkowski over threw Murphy and Higgins on 3 occasions where they were wide open. Russell would’ve been crucified…

Grad DID connect on a 75 yd TD pass to Murphy and I’d say yeah, that definitely qualified as a deep ball vertical route.

It was the Raiders best out put on offense by far partly because the run game, partly because the receviers made grabs.

Grad was innacurrate several times and wides dropped passes that hit them in the hands, but they made more then they dropped this game and it made the difference.

Murphy outperformed DHB all summer long. Yet it took an injury to get him the starting job once Schilens got back.

Russell didn’t know the playbook in training camp…yet it took 10 long weeks of the most inept offensive football in league history to make a change.

That is where the business of football comes in. The team have invested 32 million $$ on JRus. They are going to give him every chance to get things going. In the old days he would have sit and watched for at least 3 years but now teams don’t develop players like they used to and College teams don’t coach players they just get out of their way and let there physical gifts take over.

You want to see the best example of this look at DHB and Vernon Davis. Same college, same off the chart physical gifts and same problems. Can’t catch. Davis looks like he is getting better but for DHB its too early too tell but he needs someone to teach him the position. In the past the Raiders had vets and Freddy B. as their position coach but with Sanjay Lal i think that the organization is just asking too much from a coach that has no history of teaching the postion.

And comparing DHB to Murphy is not fair. Murphy knew he had to do twice as much just to make the team. Plus there has been a stigma with Gator WR’s not producing in the NFL. He had the right mentality coming in the season. DHB will get it together and he has a great example in Murphy.

    SNB

That is where the business of football comes in. The team have invested 32 million $$ on JRus. They are going to give him every chance to get things going.

And comparing DHB to Murphy is not fair. Murphy knew he had to do twice as much just to make the team. Plus there has been a stigma with Gator WR’s not producing in the NFL. He had the right mentality coming in the season. DHB will get it together and he has a great example in Murphy.
    ======================================================
Couple of things….I understand “business decisions” but there is also a business concept that is called “sunk costs” or “escalating commitment”

Basically it means that you don’t throw more time and investment into something that is not delivering, and shows no realistic sign of delivering, just because you spent a ton of money in the past.

If Russell was just struggling through the position…I could understand the investment thing. But after hearing about the weight issue, skipping OTAs, skipping position meetings, being late, and not knowing the playbook….the Raider leadership cheated the players, coaches and fans by putting this guy out there.

AS for DHB vs. Murphy…DHB should be in here with the SAME drive as Murphy (as you said in your post). Murphy is fighting for the job and performing…DHB SHOULD NOT play ahead of him just because of his status.

I would rather win knowing I wasted a ton of money…than to lose knowing I wasted a ton of money.

Perhaps the lesson of Gradkowski and Murphy will teach Davis to think twice before sending the card up to the Commissioner on draft day!

What good does it do to sit here and argue about Al when you KNOW he’s not going anywhere. When you know that the difference between today’s win and the KC loss is Murphy catching the ball. Cable calls plays for DHB, we lose. Last 2 weeks, we don’t do that and we win. What does Al have to do with players making plays?

Today was not a “great” win for the Raiders.

But it wasn’t, Russell and DHB on the bench, DMAC getting 9 touches for 25yds, Bush 1 rush & 1 pass. Did Mitchell play?

It just indicates that the future of our team has to be re-engineered….again.
    =====================================================

I disagree, its a team game. If you have productive players on the field leave them there and let them play. Not every star in the NFL are the top draft picks. If its Grad, Murphy and Branch that are leading the way then so be it. If the others come around then it makes the team stronger.

Give 3 reasons why either one should be.

    Ok..give one.

    Just one.

Russell brings zero to the table. Nada..zilch…not even sure if he’s salvageable. Does nothing right, and pretty much everything wrong.

Bey? guys a train wreck, and a liability.

So..in your opinion, what ONE thing would make you, as a GM want them on your team?

    ——————————————————-

Uhhh … I can give you 30 million reasons for Russell still being on the roster and trying to develop him.

    Same for DHB.

Money is already spent so TRY and coach the kid back to where he was just 10 games ago. At the end of last season, NOT ONE person was talking shyt about Russell. Now he can’t even be the backup?

RICHOCHET: Is he a liability? I say yes. Is he someone you want behind center? I say no. When you see the difference between Grab, an admitted less than stellar qb, behind center, as compared to Russell, it’s a huge difference. Not marginal, but huge.

that alone is reason enough to want a Frye, or Garcia, or whoever back there as a backup.
    ############################

He should actually be 3rd string behind Frye right now, but surely on the roster. Plenty of examples of reclamation projects like Alex Smith, VY, Leinart to warrant him still being on the roster. CMON!

RICHOCHET: Smith, Young, Leinart have all done something russell has never done..worked their ass off. Gave 100%. Cared about being the best they can be. All have taken responsibility when they should have.
Russell has done none of the above.

so..just because he got a brink’s truck backed up to his driveway, should he not be held to the same standards as others who weren’t as lucky? He should work even HARDER to justify the money..but he doesn’t.

    No doubt!

I think the plan was for Garcia to be the starter this year, but he quit so what could they do? Garcia would’ve been the starter, Russell the backup, and Grads #3. The fact that Grads is a Garcia clone tells me that Cable and Hackett prefer that type of QB over Russell. For whatever reason.

Look, the guy is a backup and #2 at that, so he is a snap away from being back on the field. For that reason alone, I have to stay somewhat positive about is potential, lol. Priesttj,

If Russell gets is behind in shape. If he has the discipline to get up in the morning and make meetings on time. If he has the capability of learning the entire playbook.

I don’t think this guy is it. After 3yrs…his issues are more basic than that of any other QB. AGain, all those other young QBs stayed in shape and attended meetings…..when you don’t even do those things…you are on your way out of the league and back to Mobile where you can live a life of luxury…maybe being an assistant coach for the local high school team or something.

Russell really let me down with his antics this year…disappointing!

But Gradkowski showed the determination to want to succeed. For now that is good enough

  373. jhill Says:

A BIG congrats to the players on this gutty win and Cable for calling some decent plays for once.

Looks like this team may have a QB in da Bruce!

Nice homecoming for Bruce and it sure seems like the starters at WR better remain Chaz and Murphy with JLH and DHB battling for 3 and 4.

I think Scott is a DEFINATE keeper at WLB because he plays it ideally and with his versatility to play well standing up and sometimes as a down DE, he will continue to be able to make plays all over the field.

The weakness of the defense is of course Kelly and Warren. The DT Suh from Nebraska would be great fit for the defense to replace one if not both of those guys with Bryant waiting in the wings as well. The other big need is a BEAST MLB.

I liked seeing L Walker be versatile enough to fill in for Gallery at LG and I see his future being a RG next year to compete with Carlisle. The team also needs a STUD RT and another Center to compete with Samson and Morris.

    A couple of things:

I didn’t say that DHB didn’t have the same drive as Murphy. Murphy was a lower draft pick from a school that has a rep for producing busts in the NFL. DHB is a lot like Vernon Davis in that he has gotten away with getting results from being athletic. Murphy took a different approach. But my question to you is where is the WR coach in all of this?

I’ve been against Sanjay Lal all season. He is a Kiffin holdover and i’m not surprised that his unit underperforms. Look who brought him in here.

As for your other comment. Grad and Frye battled for the 2nd string job all off season. I don’t remember anyone saying that either one should be starting on week one. So if there was no viable option to upgrade the position what do you do? Garcia asked to be released so he was not an option. So what were the options?

Then there is Okung, williams, and black at ot plus some other ones you havent heard of yet. then you have berry and mays at safety, best and spiller at rb all the wrs coming out next year so there will be plenty of good corners in the 2nd rd and after.

Why would Tampa, St Louis, Cleveland or Detroit not take him in front of us?

    ^^^^^^^^
Well, Tampa needs O-Line and D-Line help. They may look for an OT to protect Freeman before D-Line. D-Line is gonna be deep this year in the draft.

St Louis will go QB unless they sign a vet like Vick.
Cleveland need playmakers on offense and they need a RB and WR…..BADLY.

Detroit may take Suh if he is there, but they also need a OT.

Terrance Cody is NOT a top 10 pick IMO. In the NFL he will only be a two down player due to him being overweight. He will need to lose 20-25 pounds before being considered a top 10 pick.

Why pay top 10 money to another player who become lazy after signing his big contract and may not care about getting in shape like Russell?

  420. PassTheCheetos Says:

As a cornhusker and raiders fan i can honestly say Suh is the best college football player in the country. Oakland has already won too many games for it to be in contention for Suh. Vegas,

I agree with you that a Mendenhall type of bcak is needed. But I DO think that DMAC isn’t being used right. I would emphasize touches with him instead of carries, and mix him in the passing game a lot more. he should get AT LEAST 3 screens per game, and should be lined up in the slot more often.

But like Charlie says, upgrade the line play, and you will see a difference. DMAC had a nice strong run in the 4th qtr. First time I saw him not see a defender in his face for a yard or 2. It’s not like he’s missing open holes. There aren’t any.

  430. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Both Chaz and Murphy are big and fast. We may just have gold here with those two. All they needed was someone who could throw catchable passes.

There are enough holes for Fargas to average more per carry than McFadden. I do agree that Darren shouldn’t be getting hand-offs, and catching the ball is the only thing he seems really good at. The other player our NEW GM/PERSONNEL man should look at besides Suh is the monster brickhouse OT from Maryland Bruce Campbell. 6′6, 310, LONG ARMS, and has good feet and can move. He would probably be the Raiders starting RT from day one!

  457. Kirk Says:

No Russell and no DHB = Victory

Now if we can just get rid of Fargas….

This Game shows once and for all just how Horrible Al Davis runs his Drafts…His Last 3 top 10 picks did NOTHING in this game. Jamungus Russel sat on his useless big fat rich rear. DHB Mr. “Hands of Stone” was injured with what’s being termed a “total lack of Hand Eye coordination”. Dmac made a cameo appearance doing the one thing we know he can “run fast to outside”. Huff is finally playing like a good player, but as Al has said he didn’t want Huff, because Huff was Art Shell’s pick. The only Good 1st rd picks we’ve ever had were one’s Al didn’t want. Marcus Allen comes to mind. Davis didn’t want him because he “wasn’t fast”, and he’s probably the greatest Raider ever. We need a GM who knows how to recognize talent and looks at more than 40 times in picking draft picks. Al has no Idea how the modern game works. Fast WR’s and RB’s are usless if they can’t catch or can’t make people miss. Srong Armed Qb’s are usless if they can read defenses and make GOOD quick decisions under pressure

Whats hand eye coordination got to do with stubbing your toe? last time i checked i didnt need hand eye coordination to keep myself from stubbing my toe.

What a classic almost like the 70s rivalry pitt raiders games. I had a feeling we had a chance with dhb not starting. Silvaa and black forever . I still pray for a gm and gruden and sign jason campbell.vince young

  460. armond Says:

lefty, jhill said exactly what im talking about. dmc isnt used right thats on the playcaller which is cable. bush makes nice runs asks to come out cuz he got tired and rarely sees the field, thats on cable. bush fumbles and hes out of the game, thats on cable. dhb drops several passes and loses a game and runs bad routes but still played, thats on cable. how the hell do u committ to some young guys but not the better ones? FOOK the bullsheit man cable aint usin guys right. he cleary has favorites and its doin us no favors. why isnt jlh returining kicks instead of g russ? the man is a bafoon!!

    Thec,

This would be the SAFEST way to go. The Raiders need to get more production out of its top picks.

    Get lineman!

    ^^^^^^^^
    Yep…Linemen and a beast MLB!

funny how when discussing the WRs all people talk about is production, yet when talking about RBs production doesn’t seem so important.

    *************************************

I agree 100%. I wish the other guys were better than Fargas, but they aren’t. Or at least they aren’t consistantly.

  463. Que Says:

And also lets not forget about all the extremely late raider only flags to kill a drive. Nice non call on hines ward. Classic raider pitt gm

  464. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Russell’s career is in all probability behind him.

  465. Random Drug Tester Says:

We had a Tight-end returning kicks today…must be some kind of first.

  466. vegas raider Says:

I wonder if we will be favorites next week?

I would think 3 point underdogs.

  467. PassTheCheetos Says:

49ers just lost, there is a God.

  468. 16yearsold16yearfan Says:

england thats true i almost wanted to blow up al’s house when i heard dar i didnt even need the whole name i was like you old ignorant bastard what is wrong with you but with this year any reach still might be a good pick unless its a something crazy like a long snapper in the 1st rd

  469. PassTheCheetos Says:

No we had a fullback returning kicks. Pretty sure the patriots used vrabel on puts or kicks for a few games a couple years ago. That is if i recollect correctly.

  470. 16yearsold16yearfan Says:

i dont understand how cable can get mad at bush for being tired after 5 straight runs for 30 yards and its not like hes just running he was busting through the lines and fighting off tackles that was just a bogus reason to keep him out of the game

Let me finish with this comment. The Raiders high draft picks are playing well but most of you nitwits can’t see them. Huff, Nnamdi, Routt, Gallery, Zmiller, and Mitchell had a very good game today. The difference is these players ahve had a chance to develope. They’re in their 3rd, 4th, and 5th years and the ypoung guy’s are starting to come around but they’re in their 1st 2nd and 3rd years the only one that I would call a bit of a disappointment is DMC, but it’s been his health and the fact that he’s in it with two very good players on a young team.

As for Russell those writing him off at this point are ignoring the position he plays and the position this team put him in. His own shortcomings taken into consideration he has had some very good outings just not enough of them the bad has outwieghed the good. But the kid is 24 years old………I just don’t think most of you understand how much of a factor that is. And he was on a bad football team. He could turn this around almost immediately and be a real factor in this teams future. I keep saying it because there are examples all over this team right now.

  472. Kirk Says:

“Long snapper in the 1st round”

Good thing I wasn’t drinking anything when I read that one. I would have spewed it all over the carpet. Too funny!

I was having Rich Gannon flashbacks today. I swear he came back and was quarterbacking the Raiders. Miraculous escapes, side arm throws, runs for first downs, and a Raider victory. This is the best the Raiders offense has played in five years.

  473. jhill Says:

    Vegas,

I like Fargas, so there is no real issue there. I said Bush should be traded this past offseason for whatever Tampa was offering.

Fargas can have his 15 carries a game or so, but I would love to see Cable find a way to get DMAC at least 15 carries a game, and 5-10 passes thrown his way.

Al Davis sucks…..the teams record and questionable decision making the 7 years when it comes coaches and players is PROOF of it!

  475. lefty12 Says:

Armond, people say Dmac should be playing instead of Fargas, yet when they are asked to run the same plays,Fargas out gains ,picks up the blitz, and blocks better than Dmac.you can shift the blame all you want, but Fargas outproduces him .until that changes,Fargas SHOULD be getting more reps.and there has to be a reason we don’t know about that Bush isn’t given more opportunities.-maybe attitude, who knows.you can’t blame the coach for a player asking out after a play or two-what is he supposed to do-oh,i got it-don’t play him if he doesn’t want to play.

if Fargas and Dmac are asked to run the same plays,Fargas gets better production every week.until Dmac reverses that Fargas will continue to get the bulk of the carries.as for Bush,he must do something they don’t like, but i have no idea what it is.funny how when discussing the WRs all people talk about is production, yet when talking about RBs production doesn’t seem so important.

Michael’s production when getting more than 10 carries is the best on the team

  477. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

The position this team’s put Russell in?!!!

How about the position Russell’s put this team in?
That would be 4 and 8.

  478. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Kirk you’re right this was damned exciting Raider football as we know we’re supposed to play it and as to the best in five years maybe you’re right about that too.

  479. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Al Davis picked Murphy as well as DHB and Mitchell which probably means that Al is still a genius but not so much anymore.

Come on Al, I love you but read the billboard and hire a GM.

  480. DKnight007 Says:

Cable should be moving DMC around more and putting him in the slot.

    Throwing more screens.

I wish this team executed screens well like the Eagles do. It’s a very effective offensive play IF executed well.

DID YALL SEE THE AP REPORT THE RAIDERS SCOUTS AT THE TEXAS NEBRASKA GANE/ ? i just hope they were scouting suh not colt mccoy ..

    ————————————————————————————————————–

Highly unlikely because Al Davis was in Pittsburgh.

  482. Kirk Says:

WTF is this thing of running McFumble up the middle? He doesnt run well between the tackles. Get him outside, split him wide, run a reverse, do something other than running him between the tackles. And third and short? Run Bush, not Fargas. This is still the dumbest team in football. It has taken most of the season for them to figure out that Russell and DHB should not be starting.
