News, notes and observations:
– Bruce Gradkowski feels the rush so much better than JaMarcus Russell. He escapes a blind side James Harrison rush to avoid a sack _ but overthrows JLH downfield and Raiders can’t covert potential big play on opening drive.
– Even the Raiders completions are an advanture. Louis Murphy nearly broke up a pass which sailed over his head and directly to intended target Chaz Schilens.
– You wanted a creative play-call? How about that Gradkowski-to-Darren McFadden-to-Gradkowski for a drive-killing loss. To make matters worse, Gallery hurting. Langston Walker comes in at LG. Report is Gallery has a back injury. He’s out.
– Schilens drops short pass on second-and-long . . . tough to miss half the season and then make an impact.
– Shane Lechler may have drifted into the “hell with it, I’m hammering it through the end zone” mode. Just hit a 55-yarder into the end zone for touchback.
– Nice open field stop on Rashard Mendenhall by Tyvon Branch on Roethlisberger dumpoff to force Pittsburgh punt.
– Dick LeBeau turning up the pressure now, or “unleashing hell,” as Maximus would put it. Hard to envision Raiders putting much together at this point with poor field postion, no running game, and no clue how to deal with James Harrison and Co.
– Gerard Warren tries to pull Rashard Mendenall back after a short first down run _ about as successful as a catcher bringing back Ball 4 with jerk of his wrist toward the plate.
– Branch joins Galleryon the sidelines _ he’s helped off the field.
– Elephant Trevor Scott bluffs dropping in coverage, comes in a rush and dumps Roethlisberger for sack on last play of quarter with Steelers driving.

We’ve had wins like this before. ‘04 against Denver. Heck, we beat Pittsburgh in ‘06. We never build on the momentum. The Raiders are going to act as if they won the Super Bowl this week, and not even prepare for Washington. Al Davis finds ways to lose. Today was all Gradkowski. You guys were right about him. He’s a “little” better than Russell. Although a lot of this was Steelers D, too. They look awful. The Raiders have to build on this momentum. They won’t.
