Wide receivers get welcome mat
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, December 7th, 2009 at 4:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.
News and notes from the Raiders open locker room session and coach Tom Cable’s weekly press briefing Monday following a 27-24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers:
– Cable said when he made the change to Bruce Gradkowski the quarterback’s most important task was to increase the productivity of the wide receivers.
Mission accomplished.
Raiders wide receivers combined for 12 receptions, 248 yards and three touchdowns against Pittsburgh and all four contributed.
Louis Murphy had four catches for 128 yards and the two scores, all in the final drive. Johnnie Lee Higgins had a season-high four catches for 63 yards, Chaz Schilens three catches for 45 yards and a touchdown and Todd Watkins one catch for 12 yards on the final drive.
It’s the most yardage for Raiders wideouts as a group since the 2005 season finale, when Randy Moss (7 for 116), Doug Gabriel (8 for 100), Jerry Porter (6 for 76) and Alvis Whitted (1-for-7) combined for 22 receptions and 299 yards from Kerry Collins.
“If you notice the biggest difference in the last three weeks is getting the wide receivers involved in the offense,’’ Cable said.
– Speaking of receivers, Cable said Darrius Heyward-Bey injured his foot at the Friday practice when someone stepped on it. He’s currently in a boot and his status for the upcoming game against Washington is not known.
Same goes for Robert Gallery (back strain) and center Samson Satele (calf strain), both of whom will be evaluated Tuesday and Wednesday. Higgins didn’t sustain a concussion after taking a blow to the head on the final drive, Cable said, but he will be evaluated as a precaution.
– Cable wanted no part of pitting Heyward-Bey against either Murphy or Schilens with regard to playing time. And although passing game coordinator Ted Tollner said earlier this season the receiver positions were fairly interchangeable, Cable said Monday they are not.
Schilens and Murphy play flanker on the right side, Heyward-Bey a split end on the left.
“Those are two distinct positions,’’ Cable said. “One’s on the ball, one’s off. One’s in motion, one’s not. So it’s much different.’’
– Langston Walker conceded it never dawned on him he could end up playing left guard.
“It didn’t occur to me until I saw Gallery hurt,’’ Walker said. “I was sort of not paying attention, just because I know I’m the swing tackle. Coach Michalczik comes over, ‘You’ve got to go in.’ I said some choice words.
“ This is what football is about, adjusting to a not perfect scenario and going in and doing your best.”
Walker said he “blew the first two plays,’’ and then was greeted by Cable when he came off the field.
“He basically asked, ‘What do you like, what do you not like.’ I told him I don’t like any of it,’ ‘’ Walker said. “ He sort of chuckled.’’
Walker said he told him what he was comfortable with and things got better.
“ I won’t say protected me, but eased me into it, didn’t call anything exotic the first time out,’’ Walker said. “Just sort of got into it. We all got our flow, and you see what happened.”
Cable’s account: “ I said, ‘What are you comfortable with? What do you like?’ And I kind of showed him the call sheet and he goes, ‘None of that.’
“ I said, ‘What do you want to do then?’ Then he said, ‘Well, don’t pull me on power. Run power to me and things like that, and I’ll be fine with these other things.’ Kind of did a little protection review real quick.
“ I thought that next series he struggled. And then after that I thought he was fine. And I mean, they’re good coaches. They went right after him, too.’’
– More Gradkowski details . . . he’s under contract for this season at $535,000 and would be an unrestricted free agent. Cable wasn’t about to delve into a discussion about how Gradkowski fits into the future with JaMarcus Russell still under contract for big money.
The three teams that had Gradkowski under contract and said, “Thanks, but no thanks,” _ Tampa Bay, St. Louis and Cleveland _ are a combined 3-33.
– Gradkowski said Mario Henderson wasn’t the only offender when he snapped at the lineman for paying attention to the video screen on the game’s final drive.
“The clock was stopped, but still the play clock was a factor. I saw a couple of guys looking up at the scoreboard trying to watch the replay,’’ Gradkowski said. “I’m not going to say exactly what I said. But I said, hey get in the huddle, we’ll look at the
scoreboard after we score.’’
– More offensive line heroics _ Morris, who went in for Satele in the first quarter, played so well he earned a game ball. Morris’ job was to make line calls against the Steelers’ blitzing defenders as well as take on formidable nose tackle Casey Hampton.
“Chris Morris probably played his finest football as a Raider,’’ Cable said. “In many regards, one who he was playing against. Two, getting all those blitzes kind of dialed in the right way in terms of sliding people where you needed ‘em, and redirecting. The guy was fabulous, he really was.
Other recipients of game balls were long snapper Jon Condo, Gradkowski, wide receiver Louis Murphy and linebackers Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard.
– Cable didn’t want the team’s defensive performance in the first half to get lost in the shuffle of the fourth-quarter fireworks.
“We go into halftime really giving up two chunk throws and one chunk run,’’ Cable said. “That’s a huge improvement for us. It’s not what you want. You don’t want any of that and the damn run (60 yards by Rashard Mendenhall) really could have been stopped by three different guys.
“You go in at halftime and that’s why it is 10-6 because we limited them.
– It didn’t exactly light up the stat box, but given the Raiders problems returning kicks this season, Cable thought Gary Russell’s 34-yard return, which came following a Pittsburgh field goal set up by Sefon Logan’s 83-yard kickoff return, helped change momentum.
“It’s not like you just wake up one morning and become the U.S. track team and return everything 100 yard,” Cable said. “No, it’s getting the ball out past the 30 and creating that positive feel when you come out on the field on offense that the field just got shortened by a decent return. I thought that was a huge lift.”
– Sebastian Janikowski is kicking so well hit one from 43 yards on a bad approach.
“He slipped so I guess it would be for him like hitting a slice,” Cable said. “It was a bad three iron for him but it went in. When you see it on film, it starts out a good six, seven feet out there and all of a sudden it went in.”

I’m staying at Royal Playa del Carmen, it’s a huge all-inclusive too. Never been down there before. Love snorkeling, been working on my PADI Open Water cert. but haven’t finished yet though.”
You will have a blast, very relaxing too. You may even be able to finish your PADI Open Water certification on site. They do that at the Moon Palace in their pools.
The wife and I really enjoyed the Jungle Tour, where you jetski through a little jungle area for a while until you end up on the other side. Then everyone tied their jetskis together and we all snorkled for a while.
The guides would throw a ton of fish food and every fish in the area would surround you, so amazing. It’s funny, the fish eat so well down there, we even saw a fish that looked very much like a barracuda with several teeth, swim by lethargicly without a care in the world or a bit of interest in us and what we were doing. My wife almost s’d her bikini!
Plus Castle Chitzen Itza(sp) is highly recommended, especially the late night tour which includes an authentic Mayan dinner and amazing show on the castle at night.
Ok I am rambling, but have an excellent time!

Even if Gradkowski is NOT the answer at QB…he has already proven himself a more capable backup than any we’ve had since Kerry Collins.
Guys with the potential to become very good QB’s cannot just be let go because they don’t fit a certain mold.
If he plays .500 ball with this team, in this environment, Gradkowski deserves the shot at keeping this job…and a contract suitable for a QB in his position as a returning #1 QB (albeit with little experience).
A few more good games, and I’d rather pay a guy with proven ability to produce…like Grad…$8 Mill over 3 years, than a rookie draft pick $20-30 Mill guaranteed just to sign on the dotted line.

Its time for Al Davis to just sit down.
The Raiders threw away this season trying to prove a point.
Russell and his slothful, lazy and indifferent attitude during camp had no business starting on a PROFESSIONAL football team
DHB was outperformed by Murphy starting in training camp
DMAC has less production than Bush or Fargas
Al Davis might very well screw this up in the offseason.
Cut Russell, Cut DHB, Cut DMAC
Strip Cable of O.C so he can focus on getting the team prepared each week
Re-sign Gradkowski and sign a veteran for competition
Have Bush and Fargas go 60 / 40 on runs

December 7th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Its been a while… mostly because there has been nothing to worth mentioning.
Now that the Raiders have came back from the dead; although, the Cable era is still on life support here is the way I see it.
Cable needs two more wins to stay on as head coach: and he needs to be competitive in all four remaining games.
Bruce G is the unquestioned leader of the team for the rest of the season. I hope he can follow up that amazing story book performance with another victory next week.
Al still should step down as General Manager: he is just too old and is never accountable for his blunders.
DHB sucks… he does not know how to catch the ball with his hands. JLH was the unsung hero of that game because he pulled in a few difficult( requiring a catch with hands) catches that would not have been made if DHB was playing.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
I don’t think Gradkowski is all that great, but he is good enough to get the team playing better football.
Much better than Russell was playing.
Some folks were saying Peyton Manning couldn’t win on this team…Yet, Bruce Gradkowski throws for 300 yards and 3 TD to beat the Steelers at home.
So what does that say about what Manning could do?
December 7th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Hey Dakota, you come in this room bashing Gradkowski, and Coach Cable, and the Raider Nation on this blog!! Dude.. take a chill pill, relax! Why do you have a hard on for J-bust? I bet your not even a Raider fan!!
You like the donkeys? Or do you work in the front office in Alameda? What..is Al paying you to back up his boy??
Every time I come here..your always talking shyt!!
Sorry Nation, just had to get that off my chest!
December 7th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Yeah – that’s TRUE!!! It would be 3 comeback victories for Gradkowski if DHB didn’t think he was playing vollyball instead of football on that perfectly thrown pass by the endzone! Gawd, I hope he stays out of the line-up until he learns to catch.
What a GREAT Game! Well, most posters were right. It’s stupid to put in starters who don’t deserve it or produce. It holds the whole team back. Now, just stop giving DMC so many carries and give them to Bush and it’ll be the final “free ride” going away imo.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Mcfadden can still be salvaged. Fargas first few seasons in Oakland mirrored Mcfadden. The raiders (the crypt keeper in the jump suit)stood with him, and he is solid player.
Mcfadden is a bust, but most likely in the sense of Gallery and Huff: not the all pro that were envisioned, but solid contributers after a several years of nothing… It takes some people time to develop. Namdi was the same way.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
In addition:
Restructure the contracts of:
Tommy Kelly, Michael Huff and Gerard Warren….they each contribute but they are not elite talents at their position.
Restructure or release
Cut Russell, Cut DHB, Cut DMAC

December 7th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
I’m not one saying that we have to cut Russell, DHB or Mcfadden. Just don’t give them the playing time until they’re the most productive option and they’ve earned it….just like every other position on this team.
And I’d trade our 1st round pick. We have much better success trading our 1st round pick for productive players than picking them in the 1st round. Maybe add a whole bunch of picks instead of trading for a player. Like their 2nd this year & next, their 3rd and 5th or something. Hell, we’d get a much higher chance of successful picking per our draft history.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
If Murphy doesn’t catch that pop fly, we don’t win that game.
But no question Bruce got out trouble in the pocket and made plays.

But RB is one of the few positions normally you know what you got exactly after their 1st year playing. It’s not all that unusual for a rookie back to get 1000 yards rushing. You almost never see a rookie QB, Corner etc. playing up to their level right away.

Solid players…fine. But they are being paid as elite talents. That has to stop.
If we paid for production, we would have enough money available to grab a Barrett Rudd or other premier free agents that could help the team.
I am tired of potential and promise…the language of Al Davis…For me, its p&ss or get off the pot!
Russell will never beat out Gradkowski or a veteran
DHB will never outperform Schilens or Murphy…the latter guys being late round picks who had to grind to get where they are
DMAC can’t beat out Bush…let alone Fargas. He isn’t going to do it anytime soon. DMAC does NOT look like Adrian Pederson or Chris Johnson….Move on
2010 is an uncapped year. clean out the closet!
December 7th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Hopefully the raiders can string together a few more victories to get out of the top ten… That would be one hell of an achievement and bring some much needed relief to the pocket book.
Besides we need to get low enough to not have a shot at Taylor Mays. I shudder everytime I watch USC because I know Al Davis is just salivating looking at that dude.
Know knock to Mays, but we really do not need another DB that high. Branch, Eugene, Huff, and Mitchell are enough for that position
December 7th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
KK, the truth is that a couple of those TDs were not pretty throws at all….but the good news is it don’t matter how pretty it is, but that we scored and we won!
Having WRs who can catch in there made a huge difference. If JLH and Murphy were on the bench because of DHB there’s NO WAY we would have won.

Why would you keep backup players on the roster while paying them ELITE starter salary.
Do you really think Russell’s slothfullness will turn around and outwork Gradkowski? So cut Russell and move on.
Do you see DMAC transforming into an Adrian Pederson or Chris Johnson…hell how about Percy Harvin? Exactly, cut him and move on!
Do you really, honestly see DHB outperforming Schilens or Murphy in route running, catching the ball, and just making plays? Exactly…and you are not paying a slot receiver $10MM. Cut him and move on.
Is Huff, Kelly or Warren top 5 at their positions? Top 10? Exactly. So why pay them as such. Restructure or cut them and find a replacement in free agency.
Time for Al Davis to let the pros run this organization and atone for his awful decisions.
Play production….not hype or potential!!!!

I agree with you guys on Russell, Huff, Kelly, DHB, Javon Walker… and to extent McFadden.
I am just saying maybe a little more time with Mcfadden would be wise.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I am a DHB basher. I think he’s a waste of a pick who didn’t prove himself even in college. He REGRESSED his last year. His BIGGEST year had 51 catches! He only caught 42 his senior year. AND THIS IS IN COLLEGE WHERE YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH THINGS BECAUSE OF SIZE/SPEED ALONE WITHOUT TECHNIQUE (like Jamarcus did). He wasn’t even productive being by far the fastest player out there and being bigger than far lesser CB competition. And add to that he was known already for having bad hands.
How the heck is that going to translate into becoming a starter in the NFL?

McFadden can be kept. He should be a 3rd down type back with swing passes, going out to the slot as a WR etc. getting him the ball in space to make use of his speed. It is not a primary RB role, but he can be kept. Kelly is playing quite well actually. Not spectacular but solid. He’s being overpaid so should restructure, but I don’t think we need to flat-out cut him. Warren is maybe another story. I want someone who weighs 330+ as our other DT.
Javon Walker needs to be released or traded if we’re not going to give him a chance. He deserves it.

Give McFadden’s carries to Bush. Bush should be starting or at least getting 50% of the carries.

It is so nice to see a Raider game where the offense actually looked functional. I don’t care what anybody says, Gradkowski is a huge upgrade over JRuss. I don’t believe Gradkowski is the answer long term, but I love him over JRuss. We need to go after a veteran quarterback, not a rookie. In the upcoming draft, the Raiders need to concentrate on OL(tackle, guard and center)to sure up the right side of the line, MLB and DL. Keep playing JLH and Murphy and play DHB sparringly. He obviously is not prepare or ready for the pressures of a #1 receiver. Give him some reps to get him comfortable.
We need to get Seymore signed to a 3 or 4 year deal now!!!!

I agree. Gradkowski through up some ducks, but they won the game. I saw one interception dropped, and that is surely going to be picked next time. That is the reason why one week you are king and the next you are a bum.
The bottom line is that gradkowski has made it happen. He has two stunning come from behind victories on his resume in the past three games. He has established himself as the unquestioned leader of the team.
He has my attention. I’m not ready to crown him, but he is on the right path.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
A lot of you guys are going to be screaming bloody murder if Russell is “named” the starter after camp next year.
I am still very nervous of Davis trying to prove a point.
Step aside and let the coaches do their damn job!
We could have had a decent season had we just decided from start to play the best players!
We can’t keep throwing away these seasons and then have a late season run to keep us entertained.
You know these late season drives rarely translate into the next season…for any team.
So let’s figure out RIGHT NOW who we should develop and who we should jettison.
CUT RUSSELL
CUT DHB
CUT DMAC
December 7th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Gotta agree. Restructure the contracts of Kelly, Huff, JRuss and get rid of Javon Waler all together. Paying him all that money to sit on the bench. Invest in te trenches man. That is where the game is won and lost!

December 7th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
SnB… I am 100% on your side with staying away from WR’s, rb”s, Safeties, in the raiders case CB’s in the first round. I beleive we need more bigs in the top of the draft: DE, & OT’s mostly… maybe a stud linebacker.
DT’s scare me because they often have the same struggles with desire and weight that Jamarcus has… they are just too lazy. Glen Dorsey, Raji Bell… are missing in action like DHB, and DMAC. Sedrick Ellis and peria jerry ( i really liked him this past year)have had a lot of injuries.
It is dangerous to give a fatty too much too fast with regards to money.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
I am not trying to be a hater here.
But at the end of the day its about contending for the playoffs and competing for the Super Bowl.
To do that, the Raiders need to be as focused and fired up about OTAs and training camp as they are about the 4th win in the 12 week of the season.
This game yesterday proved that the “braintrust!?!” threw away another season b.s’n about who should play etc. etc.
Get it right and get it together
December 7th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Dickyv,
If you want to slow down an opposing running game…you have to be strong up the middle in this order:
DT, MLB, SS
December 7th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Look at the Vikings. Excellent D-Line….average Linebackers…#1 run defense!
December 7th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
We need to get the money by restructuring contracts. Al will not cut Russell, should restructure if nothing else with him.
DHB will not be cut. Aint restructuring yet.
Cannot cut DMAC yet. Yes he has not played well, but he has not been utilized correctly either. Routes from the slot, reverses, screens, etc… We use him correctly and he does nothing, then cut him or trade him.

Good picks from the past 3 years:
2009

Myers
too early to tell on the rest
2008
Branch
Schillens
Trevor Scott
2007
Zach Miller
Mario Henderson (traded for 2008 3rd)
JLH
Jay Richardson
big misses:
JR
DMAC
DHB
quinten mosses
Stryker Sluvak
John Bowie ( Moss Pick)
Arman Shields
trading #2 for D Hall
unknown:
mitchell
Slade norris
Holland
M Bush
who did I leave off the list?

December 7th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
SNB if Taylor Mays is there next year for us do you feel we should take if he is the best player on the board?
December 7th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
The Raiders should trade their 1st and DMAC for SUH… that kid is stud. It probably will take more, but who knows most teams would love to trade out of the top pick to get into the middle of the round just to esape paying big money for unproven commidities
December 7th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Al is defintaley resposible for drafting Russell, DMAC, DHB, and trading for D Hall. Those four moves are the reason why the raiders are 4-8. nothing from the last three top picks and giving away a good prospect pick for a chump like d hall is just unexcusable. There was plenty of proof that he was a bust: see the game where hines ward ripped him for 3 td’s and 200 yards while he was in ATL

I would love to have Huh but I think it will cost more. Al has traded up to the 2 spot before. I remember him wainting Orlando Pace only to be outfoxed by the Rams. I have a feeling it will cost him an arm and leg but Suh is da man beast. Have you read the bio on that guy? Wow what a fantastic player.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
Hear ya AIG, but what a catch, solve problems for a long time!
December 7th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
I like Cable… for the most part because I beleive continuity and stability will raise Oakland from the dead… back to say mediocre or vaguely interesting.
Cable has done a fine job for salvaging the team from the Al Davis v Lane kiffin debacle.
He did a great job of making the switch from Russell to Gradkowski: anything sooner would have been great in retrospect, but really ill-advised at the time.
I would say he deserves a clean slate next year. With a QB that has earned the job.
He was handed two bad situations and he made the most of them.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
lol
KK, you are the angriest sensitive little he-bich in here.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
DickyV I agree with that the only thing I would ad is hire a OC. Cable needs to get his mits off that.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
The thing is as has been said by almost everybody in the whole world….it takes “around” 3 years 4A WR 2 enter his zone.Sure there are exceptions like Welker….
In 5 years Darious Heyward Bey will be thee one most feared WR the NFL has ever seen, imo
December 7th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
AIG,
I think it is important to not give up too much for one player: imagine where the raiders would be without picks like Miller, Branch, Scott, Murphy, Myers, Fargas, chris Morris, Mario Henderson, chaz Schillens… all of which would be after thoughts in a trade for a prospect like SUH.
If anything the raiders should be very careful not to be giving up middle to late round picks for top picks because they are having more success later in the draft than they are at the begining
December 7th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

Mcfadden can still be salvaged. Fargas first few seasons in Oakland mirrored Mcfadden. The raiders (the crypt keeper in the jump suit)stood with him, and he is solid player.
======================================================
^^^^^^^^^
Russell should definately be on the short lease…..DMC and DHB still have maybe two more years prove themselves.
Cable and Tollner still need to figure out way to use DMC more effectively. They need to use the Wildcat more to keep defenses off balance and they need to put DMC in the slot more and use reverses and pitches.

agreed. I wouldnt mind our 1st round and some other creative way to make it happen. We do have a young nucleus with some decent vets.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
I don’t know mista brown about your assesment of Cable’s play calling.
The raiders almost put up 400 yards yesterday in Steel Country.
Is it his play calling or him being asked to make chicken salad from chicken shyt.
JLH should have been playing all year over DHB. JLH is an idiot but and I am sure everyone can list their fave five blooper reels from that dude, but he catches the ball with his hands and he can go from 0 to 60 with the ball in his hands quickly.
I wonder how the offense would have performed with JLH in over DHB all year… probably would have a few more TD’s and maybe one more win here or there. I can’t help but remember that dude making big plays late last year for the Raiders.
Not to mention all the injuries: gallery coming back has made a huge improvement. Chaz has made an impact as well.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
And another thing about Big Al….anyone ever see him sweat????
December 7th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Put me in the camp of who thinks DHB will have a better NFL career than Darren and Jamarcus.
DHB seems to do the little things and has shown a decent work ethic and attitude. Darren and Jamarcus are trash, go with the flow southerners (sorry 504) with way overhyped “skills”.
Darren could be utilized a little better, but he will never be as good as even Justin Fargas running between the tackles, and that is sad.
I want a guy like Mendanhall or these other recent 1st round RB’s, big physical, fast, violent runners. Darren had a decent 4 yard run on a pitch play and you would have thought it was a highlight reel run according to people in here. He finally did his job, beat the LB to the corner and lowered his shoulder and got an extra yard or two.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
dark night
I think DMAC at the very least has to be in their returning punts… ever since Timmy b went down, Al has refused to put his coveted picks in the return game, but DMAC is abust and at this point we need some kind of return from him. there is no way a full back should be fielding kicks before DMAC…
Again shyt is always strange with Al Davis running the show.

BSJ,
One day late brother!!!! I was at the Hilton yesterday. Rain today, chance of snow and more rain tomorrow.
How long are you in town?
December 7th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Vegas… DHB never even attempts to catch the ball with his hands. The dude at best is a James Jett maybe and at best a Willie Gault ( and that would require a huge improvement)
Why not just throw the same money at that Jamaican cat Bolt. At least that would be intriguing as oppossed to embarassing that we drafted a player high that everyone said we shouldn’t have.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Yes AIG, been watching him all year, was hoping to keep it a secret, lol.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
I don’t think JLH’s heart was in it playing with Jamarcus. He got led to die once and didn’t feel like going back.
Bet his punt-returning improves now that Bruce is in there.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
860,
I have been watching him a lil until the texas game. Like you I was hoping it was a secret utnil they announced that Mel kiper has him #1 on his board during the game. Then he went out and registered 12 tackles and 4.5 sacks against a #2 team in the nation. lmao.

Yes, lmao also, but I didn’t give it up! True Raider fan here! lol
December 7th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
JLH is double edged sword. He runs bad routes, looses focus, doesn’t run through routes, but he can take it to the house at any time.
He showed up big yesterday with a few big catches. I hope he stays on the field over DHB. DHB has not earned that starting spot.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Heyward Bey was mediocre in College.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

December 7th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
DickyV,
All I said was that he would be better than Darren and Russell. I realize that is not saying much at all, but I think he can evolve into a Jerry Porter type, semi-productive with some drops.
Russell is toast and Darren can’t break a tackle.

Russell’s nacho fund is more than that. DHB makes more than that every time he clanks a ball in practice. McFadden makes more when he falls into a fetal position when anyone gets near him.

December 7th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Bruce’s biggest downfall is his size and arm angle that he throws it. It’s a given, he is going to get 1-2 passes batted down a game. However, he knows how to overcome it by throwing at odd angles, just like Rich Gannon.
He was dropping dimes out there yesterday. That sweet fade away throw to Murphy under big pressure on the last drive (not the pop fly but earlier on the drive), the game-winning TD, and the 75 yarder, the 4th and 1 touch to Fargas. Just fun as hell to watch.

What does Jamarcus have? A strong arm that is more of of a shotgun than a rifle?
Vince Young can do things on the field nobody else can. Jamarcus can also do things that other people can’t do, but that’s because he’s created new depths of crappyness.

This is true and I mentioned this on here about a month ago. But it was more him being unfamiliar with playbook than the drops. He didn’t know his assignments. Off the record he told a guy I know that it was the Creole broads we have down here. That’s where most of his focus was. He grew up quick. The slap in the face to him was the re-signing of Devery Henderson to contract extension because he was drafted to be a better version of Henderson.

Schilens and Murphy play flanker on the right side, Heyward-Bey a split end on the left.

We will all know how serious JaMarcus is about his job during the first minicamp. The scale will say it all. Every off-season since he was at LSU he gained weight (275 lbs) because he always knew when he returned he would be the man. He would always work as a counselor at the annual Manning Passing Academy during the summer down here. The GUT was on full display. He always made Peyton and Eli look like crack babies.
By the way, his last year at LSU he was way overweight and played the season getting in shape. He didn’t get down to his listed size (250) until the Sugar Bowl. Because major money was on the line.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
There was major money on the line this offseason, if he just blows things off, he might be out of the league.

DHB is a perfect example of how Al Davis doesn’t know the difference between speed and quickness. Quickness is way more important than straight ahead speed. Not to mention the ability to catch the football. How can a wide receiver be so bad at catching a football?

I’m still holding out hope for DHB though. Only a rookie, and WR’s can take a little while. Will never be great though, pretty safe to say that.

luv that we beat pit. and that hines ward who laughed as he thought he caught the game-winning td late in the 4th. of course the zebras didn’t catch him pulling cj’s facemask to fight off the bump and get an extra step. nifty move but it wasn’t enough to win suckas.

this is a totally unpopular opinion, but Cable has shown the last few weeks he can call a good game when he has a competent QB.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Lefty,
I didn’t like the way Cable called the first 58 minutes of the Cincy game. Even plays in the last drive like running DMAC up the middle on 3rd and 1.
The Dallas game was far from impressive.
I liked A LOT of what I saw from him yesterday. The PA rollouts, a lot of running, shorter routes. And of course it helps that the lineup not only included a decent QB, but decent WRs and good Oline play.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
I REALLY like the progress of the defense under Marshall though. I can see 1 or 2 more players making a HUGE difference on those big plays we give up. Solid defense on a huge majority of the plays.

Charlie Weis is going to be the OC in Chicago next year with Cutler. Lovie Smith will keep job b/c too much left on contract. Ron Turner is outta there.
Reggie Bush out of N.O.?

Cable has said MORE THAN ONCE when a running play is called the RB has to make a read and either take the ball off tackle or break it outside.Dmacs problem is he NEVER reads the play and breaks the run outside,he just runs up the lines backs.it happened yesterday.all he had to do was go outside and he would have had a big game around the right side.those saying we shouldn’t run him off tackle so much don’t know what they are talking about.probably Madden game experts.he has to make reads and cut or take it outside.he doesn’t.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
The ONLY way Cable SHOULD stay is if he hires a full-time offensive coordinator. I’ve seen enough of Cable calling plays. Get Hackett to call the plays since we are going with a pure WCO QB. Let’s match coaching philosophy with the players.
Cut JaMarcus Russell in 2010…he lacks the maturity, commitment, heart and has lost his coach and team. He will never develop…at least in Oakland…cut him and send a message to the rest of the team that PRODUCTION MATTERS.
Cut Darrius Heyward-Bust: I saw enough in college. Again, will HE EVER BEAT OUT SCHILENS AND MURPHY? Come-on. Murphy is a #1 pick….DHB is a huge project…You don’t pay big money for huge projects. Cut him and take your loss and move on. You don’t pay a slot receiver $20MM
Cut Darren McFadden: He does not have it. Its not about getting utilized with this guy. He gets carries. BUSH IS UNDERUTILIZED! DMAC will NEVER BE AN ADRIAN PEDERSON OR CHRIS JOHNSON. That’s his measuring stick right now. He will never get there…so stop paying like he is!
You guys have to stop with the HOPES AND DREAMS and get with reality.
Start playing the guys that produce and STOP PAYING THE GUYS WHO ARE WORTHLESS!
Cut Russell, Cut DHB, Cut DMAC!
Restructure or Cut Huff, Kelly and Warren
Save the money and redeploy it towards players that have the heart, intelligence and commitment to WIN!

jhizzle wassuper!! i was thinking about james jones from gb as a wr for us. i think he might be fa but he is a pretty good wr that would be starter on this team. he plays behind 2 really good ones in driver and jennings but would definately be an upgrade over what we have now. seems like a good low risk high reward type of deal.

lefty i saw what u were talking about on that run. i was highly disappointed in him on that cuz i was thinking the same thing. fargas did the same thing when he was younger. he wasnt as patient and didnt break nearly the amount of tackles he does now. it just goes to show that guys take time to develope. i will say that u let the older guys play and have the youngins learn until they get it right. that is a much better option than just outright cutting guys like so many on here want. there are too many examples of guys who come on later than u would like but u have to give them time.

I always said that When Grad, Garcia, or Frye would get in the game everything moved more fluidly, the play developed faster, more continuity and that was in pre season……..imagine if someone else had gotten all those snaps Jabozo did all year long we would be a little more competitive alot sooner…….and maybe in the hunt……Jabozo is just too big and cumbersom to be a qb…..

I’ve always thought Cable was the coach for the Raiders only because he wanted the job, where no one else did. He also was willing to take next to nothing in pay to babysit and coddle these high priced bonus babies he had to inherit.
Now, he has to step up and coach in the big boys league and obviously he has no credentials. He seems to be in so far over his head, but meanwhile he wants to keep his job.
Give him credit. We’re seeing a little energy we have not seen in quite some time. I believe he has had to study the game at a high pace to learn his job as coach. He also seems to have some pieces in place.
Who knows, Al may be bending, and Cable may have more leash than we think. We’ll know more as this story developes. I hope he gets himself a good OC and play caller, and this is something he may also learn.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
I was also in favor of Cable remaining the coach for this year as well. He brings a positive attitude that is good for the team. And it’s good to have some consistancy in the coaching ranks.
However, after the jaw breaking incident and the history of abuse, they really need to go in another direction next year.
Getting an OC to handle play calling is a must. Cable has no feel for the flow of the game.

Most of those guys were not top 10 picks. Tim Brown was….and at least he demonstrated an ability to catch 3 balls per game in his rookie yr. None of them made the big money.
Russell, DHB and DMAC have players ahead of them that are superior, have better work ethic and produce.
Again, can Russell, DHB and DMAC beat out Gradkowski, Murphy/Schilens, Bush/Fargas? I don’t think so? So if the three mega-busts are not starter calibre players…why pay them all that freekn money.
I will be the 1st to celebrate when Russell/DHB/DMAC are CUT! Get’em out of here with immediate effect.
Reward those low round and UFAs that just go out everyday in practice and make it happen.
Russell/DHB/DMAC are a disgrace to organized, competitive sport!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
And here is why Al Davis is still of concern.
Will he (and CAble for that matter) put the best player out there…or come up with some wild azz excuse like this:
– Cable wanted no part of pitting Heyward-Bey against either Murphy or Schilens with regard to playing time. And although passing game coordinator Ted Tollner said earlier this season the receiver positions were fairly interchangeable, Cable said Monday they are not.
Schilens and Murphy play flanker on the right side, Heyward-Bey a split end on the left.
“Those are two distinct positions,’’ Cable said. “One’s on the ball, one’s off. One’s in motion, one’s not. So it’s much different.’’
December 7th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Consistancy is crucial in the coaching ranks. I hope the wins keep coming so Al will have no choice but to remain consistant with his coaches and the decisions they make.
Also, Cable has set a tone. He may be demanding more discipline from his players and he’s sent the message about playing time. Kind of get the feeling he’s fazing into the line up the players he wants, not Al.
I gotta admit, when I first heard DHB’s foot story, I thought cover-up, they just did not want him in the game. But all’s well that ends well.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Jerry said it before, and I would tend to agree with him, that the more Cable wins, the more space he’ll get.
If he wins, he can start to run what he wants and with who he wants.
But I think DHB will be back for sure. Davis will not give up on him for at least 2-2 1/2 seasons.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Does Al really exist as some guy on high ruling over all his pions and we can’t escape it?
or do we have a real team with a coach that calls the shots?
What is the answer?
December 7th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Yeah I agree, and at the time DHB was thrust into a chaotic mess and probably overwhelmed him coupled with the money he got. He may turn out, he may not. I hope he does. But clearly there are better recievers on the team right now that need to play right now.

Cable kind of reminds me of a politician.
There will be some guys in office who do a really lousy job, and make a mess of things, and you think there’s no way he’ll get re-elected again. But then you see them winning the next election.
Nothing has stuck to Cable yet. He even seems like a big bumbling oaf at times, yet he’s still hanging around.

They should start calling Murphy “Boise State.”
No matter how good he’ll plays, the higher ranked player will get the better opportunity.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Just watched the 4th quarter of that game again. A few things stood out to me:
1. I can’t count how many 3rd downs we converted on those three TD drives. A lot of huge plays including the 75-yard strike to Murphy were on 3rd down. Lot of big-time passes from Gradkowski. And a great call by Cable and a good run by McFadden on the 3rd and 2 pitch play. That’s a play the Raiders need to run for McFadden more often and maybe even create a fake-pitch play-action pass off of it.
2. Anyone who calls for Chris Johnson to be benched has no idea what they’re talking about. I don’t think he gave up one big completion in that game except the play where Hines Ward blatantly grabs his facemask and flings him back to get open. I also saw him making good tackles on short passes and running plays and holding the edge in the run game. He also batted down the Hail Mary on the last play of the game. Anyone who differs needs to point out specific plays where he’s getting beat because I just don’t see it. He probably gets beat once or twice in most weeks on any kind of meaningful completion. Guess what? That’s damn good for an NFL CB — any NFL cornerback — but especially one playing press man coverage opposite one of the two best corners in the league.
3. Great catches by Murphy. Two really nice grabs on that last drive. Great run after the catch on the 2nd TD. And of course the game-winner. Hopefully this rookie has put his own inconsistent catching issues to rest. Could develop into a very nice receiver for years to come.
4. Great ball handling by Gradkowski. He sells the play action very well. JaMarcus would often lazily just go through the motion of running play action but I’m sure the defense was rarely fooled by his lumbering, half-hearted fakes. Gradkowski speeds through the fakes and gets into his drops extremely quick. This really helps create open receivers down field and gives him an extra second to survey things — a second which is often the difference between a big completion and a sack.

Or does Russell and DHB get forced back on us?

SnB,
You’re focusing your efforts on fruitless topics. Al Davis and his prized draft picks aren’t going anywhere. He already conceded that this team is rebuilding.
We may not like it, but the best players ARE on the field. Or at least they were this past weekend. Huff got his starting spot back from Eugene weeks ago. Green is the best RT on the team. Satele EARNED his way back into the starting lineup.
Mike Mitchell looked good this weekend by the way, IMO.

ShanaRat will wind up in Dallas or Chicago. Weis may wind up being the OC in Chicago if Smith is not fired or Weis may wind up as the Browns new OC or with the Rams.

December 7th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
I was strongly opposed to bringing Cable back this season but I’ve got to admit I think he’s doing a good job in a lot of respects.
Once again the team hasn’t quit on him in December when there’s little to play for. I think this also says something positive about the guys on the roster. When Moss and Sapp were here, those were the kind of guys to quit and cry and give zero effort when things got tough. I really don’t see those kinds of players on the current roster.
I like Cable’s play-calling for the most part. I think he needs to do a better job utilizing McFadden. Other than that I love his aggressiveness in going for it on 4th down in certain situations. The 4th and 22 in the opener comes to mind, as do two occasions from the Steelers game where he went for it on 4th and short just on the other side of the 50. The counter-sweep pitch to McFadden on a key 3rd and 2 was a great call. As was the rollout run/pass option for Gradkowski on one of those 4th downs. And I love the fact that he rarely concedes 3rd and long plays with lame draw plays. That was one thing Kiffin and Knapp would do that would drive me insane. Anything more than 3rd and 7 was inevitably a draw play with those guys. Cable gives his QBs a chance to make something happen and keep drives alive. Gotta love that.
For most of the season I’ve wanted Cable out just because at some point you have to have something to show for the season in the win column and in keeping things competitive. But if he can manage even 2 more wins the Raiders would be 4-3 since pulling JaMarcus. That kind of record — against some pretty good teams no less — with Gradkowski and a bunch of 1st and 2nd year WRs would tell me he deserves another shot. It would also show that it was JaMarcus and not Cable that has been holding this team back for the last season and a half. I’m not ready to lock him up for 2010 just yet, but I’m much more receptive to the idea than I was just a few weeks ago.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
I posted earlier what Tom Cable said to the reporter

This team needs a back to back win for once. The coaches better get these guys refreshed and focus on winning this Sunday.
The skins should be very down this weekend after a heartbreaking loss to the saints and they have to travel west. The Raiders are coming off a high after this win and of course as usual can come crashing down and play like crap on sunday.
The game will be played in the rain or on a soggy field.
This game will be ugly and we should see plenty of fargas and bush.
The defense better be ready to play and the offense has to limit it’s mistakes. As always.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
JaBustus should go retire to Alabama and sit in a basement watching a big screen TV and eating pie. He gets $60 million and has the nerve to show up completely out of shape and sleep walking through an NFL season while his teamates are putting it on the line. He quit the moment he put on a Raiders cap at the draft. Watching him in college he just seemed to be much more engaged, it’s obvious he quit on us.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
The problem I see is that these 3 1st round rookies think they’re doing great. DHB “grades” himself high despite only 7 catches or whatever. JaMarcus never saw himself as the problem (probably always thought it was everyone else except for him). If he ever thought it was himself he probably would work harder.
And we keep playing them and probably are a main reason they think that they’re playing up to an acceptable level (or even above acceptable in DHB’s case thinking he got a B+ or A- or something he said)

My vote, TEBOW 2010!!!!!
……..
LOL! Yeah, I can see Tebow hanging out in the Black Hole quoting Bible verses and telling the Nation about his latest Mission Trip.
Actually, this would be comical…
Tim Tebow, Super Christian, as the FACE of Al Davis’ Rebel Raiders.
Almost sounds like a TV Sitcom.
=============================================
The “black hole” shall now be renamed “the center for christian brotherhood.”
It will be alcohol free and include a wide variety of juices and sugar-free energy drinks.
All face-painting shall include bible references, chapter and verse.
The use of profane language and discouraging taunts will frowned upon. No happy faces for those who do not comply. (Bronco games excepted)
And every day will be family day!!!

i’m not willing to annoint Grads just yet…
but i am willing to watch him over these last few games to see if he is the guy we should go with next year…
December 8th, 2009 at 5:15 am
I just hope DHB can miss the next couple of seasons with that injury so that we can keep guys in the game that can actually catch the ball. For those of you who think the guy can get better with practice are kidding yourselves. This guy did not have good hands in college, nor at any level. The one thing all the great wr’s have are great hands. This guy does not. It is so clear that Murphy is a much better talent. Belitnikof should tell that speed is not as important as route running and hands. All these guys can run, it is a matter of technique. Let’s hope the organization can move on from its mistakes.
Great win for the Raiders and Grad.

If Gradkowski plays one more good-to-great game in the next two…he’ll be signed to a nice, mid-sized ($2.5 – $3 Mill-ish per) contract for 2 years, with an option for a 3rd by the Raiders. A nice $4-5 Mill bonus would be hard for Grad to turn down right now.
***
from yesterday (above).
Gradkowski is only playing in the NFL because the Raiders didn’t want QB’s behind Russell who would “push him” for the starting job and because he he’s familiar with QB coach Paul Hackett
no other NFL team wanted this guy. he’ll re-sign for peanuts, as well as he should.
this wouldn’t be a competition if Russell put the work in … Graddy has Russell to thank for his opportunity to stay in the league. a couple starts for the lowly Raiders and he’s already beat 2 teams with playoff hopes and delivered in the clutch. He’d be wise to stay in this system under Hackett. This is the most success he’s had in pro football at the moment and this is his 4th team in 4 years. I don’t expect to see a bidding war for his services
December 8th, 2009 at 6:29 am
Dirt-Lot thats waaaay OK BRO!!!!
Good Morning 2all and thank all of you that had a hand in my “release” LOL

Well Rockstar….
He is only 26 and his rookie year he was forced into playing time due 2 others injury….only had 1 camp 2 learn Grudens complicated system and finished 5-6….not good but not bad 4a rookie either
2me football is steeped in tradition and superstition….dont shave, dont wash certain winning clothes untill you lose, that sort of thing.
Grads come from the “CRADLE” of QB’s in Pennsylvania
Grads led Div.1A in passing %’s his senior year.
Grads was drafted by Gruden
Grads was born 2 lead a NFL team imo.
He will only get better
Only 4th year
December 8th, 2009 at 6:38 am
I wouldn’t expect a bidding “war” for Bruce either, but we won’t be the only ones who want him. He is going to get a pay-raise next year and he deserves it.
He is the only type of QB that can have the Raiders win. We are so dysfunctional that we need a DYNAMIC leader, and ultra-head strong QB. That was Rich Gannon, and this is Bruce Gradkowski.
Guys with chips on their shoulders and having something to prove. Guys willing to work hard and yell at guys making 4-5 times more money than them. We have one and can’t blow it by letting him walk. Let Jamarcus walk, bring back Bruce and maybe draft a QB in a year or two. Bruce isn’t the “long-term” answer, and just like Rich Gannon, his leadership and sometimes abrasive style would probably go stale after 5-6 years, but we can have a productive 5-6 years competing for the division with this guy.

I read up on this “revenue-sharing” supplement that won’t be happening in 2010 and it didn’t seem like a big deal to me.
First, they are only talking about 100 million of the 6.5 Billion that is used for revenue-sharing, which is less than 5% of the total pie. The 100 million went to 9 teams last year (let’s say we are one of them) which comes out to $11 million per team. So no doubt, Al could use it, but this is not back-breaking by any means.

I don’t understand the comparisons to Rich Gannon.
Gannon was the NFL MVP. Bruce has had 2 good games in his 4 year career. I think it’s a bit premature
Maybe if Bruce played against the Chiefs & Cowboys like he did against the Bengals & Steelers i’d feel more secure. I like to see some consistancy from the QB position. I’m glad there are still 4 games left in the season. We’ll find out what Bruce is made of. I think he should be resigned regardless, but not given a huge contract. 2 years, $2 million. We need to save soem money so Al can draft Taylor Mays in the Top 10

How come all the sports news networks seem to be missing the most import part of Gradkowski’s success over JR’s? DHB and Todd Watkins weren’t starting and Murphy was only the 3rd WR.
I mean, Grad even put one right on Watkins numbers in the endzone and he managed to drop it. I’d bet money that JR would have done a lot better if Higgins and Schilens would have started for him. That being said, Grad still looks like a good QB for the time being. Come on 8-8.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:02 am
If Bruce performs at 60% comp. throws 250-300 yds per game and does not turn it over, I say resign him and let him compete for the starting job next summer. Hey, it’s been so long since we’ve been competitive, to get a guy who can light a fire in the locker room would be awesome. I’m not expecting Grad to become the next Gannon, but if he can lead the team ala Hostetler it will be a huge improvement over waht we’ve had during the last 7 years.

First thing Al should do is cut that FAT SLOTH of JaLARDA$$ followed by signing Grad to a decent 2 or 3yr contract, next got out and draft a REAL QB like TEBOW? and have Grad mentor the young QB, issues are solved for the next ten-tweleve yrs PERIOD… 2nd round draft the best available offensive lineman (perhaps trade BUSH for extra picks) then a true middle lineacker and lastly cornerback. Address the offensive line in the free agency along with a veteran reciver to mentor the young cats we have. But again Raiders MUST cut JaLARDA$$ (he is no VY or Alex Smith these two young cats do put in work and strive to get better one must do research before they put this FAT disgusting thingand understand that Grad is no elite QB and we do need a face of the franchise to get fans back in believeing.
————————
You lost me at Tebow. That guy could do an absolute free-fall in the draft. If we scoop him up in Round 3 I could live with the pick. But inaccurate passing and QB dive plays are not going to cut it in the NFL. Wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up playing tight end.

Tebow is going to put up huge numbers in his bowl game against a Cincy team with a shaky D and a coach with one-foot out the door.
Than some team is going to draft him way too high. Hopefully that is not us.
And Neilb, I don’t know what the odds would be, but we are 3 point underdogs this week, and we will probably be underdogs in every other game (except the Browns if we don’t bomb the next 2 weeks)

Good point. You always see #2 on the sideline keeping up with what the offense is doing. Right on par for JaMeatcake though. He wants no part of work. He’s collected his money and has his fur coats. If I’m Al Davis, I’m in that fat slob’s ear every single day telling him to shape the fk up!

In 7 games Crabtree gets 32 receptions after missing all of training camp, pre-season etc.
In 11 games (not including the last one which he didn’t play) DHB gets 9 receptions with tons of pre-season reps, full training camp etc.
Crabtree averages 4.6 catches per game
DHB averages less than 1 reception per game.
Crabtree has Alex Smith throwing to him. It’s not like it’s Payton Manning as his QB!

Sorry to inform y’all DHB bashers, but the kid is not going anywhere (see : James Jett). So y’all better say your prayers that he gets his hands right (personally I can see that his mind is the primary obstruction – whether thinking too much or the pressure of naysayers or whatnot. hypnosis could not hurt the situation.)

The Raiders and Gradkowski are getting some props on the Jim Rome show right now. Morrison is coming on the show in a few minutes…
December 8th, 2009 at 9:54 am
Damn. I heard last night that Grads is the first QB to throw 3 TD’s for the Raiders in the 4th quarter since The Snake.
Nice Accomplishment.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:55 am
4Eva,
yes, I had good laugh yesterday when I heard about Cheatin’ Hines and the hammy. Instant karma it is.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:57 am
What about the look on his face, after we scored with 8 seconds left. PRICELESS. (no fk’n smiles)
December 8th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Read somewhere that Gradkowski was the first QB ever to throw three come from behind TDs in the 4th quarter of any game.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Indeed

Hey El Tato….the link 2 vote 4 Murphy 4 Rookie of the Week????
December 8th, 2009 at 10:00 am
I hope this carries for the rest of the season. If not, at least I know Grads giving it all he has. That’s all I can ask for as a fan.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:07 am
the primary problem for DHB is that there is a brain that controls his body… located in his head…
and a separate brain that controls his hands…
the brain that controls his hands is located inside the pimple on his buttocks…
December 8th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Gradkowski sounds like Stabler did when he says things like this: “ya just gotta take your chances and try and put it where your guy can get.” And Gradkowski doesn’t smoke or party excessively.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:14 am
If Cable is inserting Walker at the LG position, he should prepare him to take over the RG position, if Gallery is healthy enough to play. We should have more running room.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:19 am
you guys see JLH’s haircut during the raider report?
December 8th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Wow I didnt realise Lwalker 8th year tips in at 365…Yep him and the Mop, 10th year and 315 or whoever is at RT. But Green seems 2 have settled down a bit 4 whatever reason sinse Grads come in,imo.Maybe we can shoot for getting back into the top 10 rushing teams again as our running attack REALLY sufferd because well everyone know why
December 8th, 2009 at 10:30 am
4eva, I think not having a true FB also hurt us.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:33 am
I understand Russell pulled out a bag of skittles on the sideline of the Cinci game and ate them…yeah, that’s really trying to win your job back…

the coaches were looking for something to motivate him!
December 8th, 2009 at 10:35 am
kudos to Tom Cable for not allowing Langston Walker to get exposed and dominated against Blitzburg.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:36 am
We need to be realistic. It is highly likely that Mr. Davis will force Cable to return JaMarcus to the line-up either towards the end of this season or to start next season.
The logic for end of this season is that the boy needs more seasoning. The logic for next season is the boy “wins” his job in training camp. In either case, it is a classic case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and Mr. Davis is perfectly capable and willing to do it.
My trust in this organization will not return until they start behaving with football logic. The best player must play regardless of draft ranking and pay. You produce or you sit and if you sit long enough, you should walk. That should be the logic. Lately, Mr. Davis seems to think that just paying people cash will make them play. He has fallen behind the times. A big paycheck today is as likely to create a bench-warming self-serving bum.
If Gradkowski continues to shine in training camp and in preseason and he starts the season next year, then may be there is finally hope. Until then, all the wins this season are just window dressing, setting all of us up for a big fall come next season when it all goes back to the old losing ways.
Cheers everyone.

Did anyone know that Elin Nordegren (Tiger’s wife) has a twin sister:

December 8th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Kirk Morrison saying lots of good things about Gradkowski on Jim Rome. If you ‘listen between the lines’, every compliment of Gradkowski is an indirect criticism of Russell: “He finds a way to move the chains…he finds a way to get in the end zone….he avoids the rush….he inspires the defense (that’s right, the DEFENSE).”
At the same time, he’s not ready to completely write off Russell (not publicly, at least). He just thinks he still has a lot to learn (duh!).

The way Al has drafted in the first round throughout recent years, I would trade the pick for a proven vet.

People talk about Gradkowski and the fact ‘it’s only one game’, but comparing to baseball and the amount of games played, 1 game in the NFL is compared to a bit over 10 games in baseball.
Maybe a question to ask is, if a baseball player took over a positon and had 10 good games, how would you feel about him? I don’t think even a baseball player should be inducted into the hall of fame for stringing together 10 good games close together either, but I’m just saying that everything is relative.
Now, “Grads” has actually been good in two out of 3 of his first games, and beaten 2 very good teams, with an offense that has done virtually NOTHING in years. I think that Grads is not even being given enough credit with what he’s done in taking an anemic offense and turning it into what looked like Sunday as a work of art.
Maybe it’s just that Russell was THAT HORRIBLE.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:52 am
I don’t know why Josephin is 4 inches shorter or if she is. They were born 10 minutes apart on New Years 1980. Look it up in the web. She’s married in Sweden and the house Tiger’s wife bought today on a Swedish Island is in both sister’s names.

Question to ask is; can a 6.1 QB with limited arm strength be the QB that takes us to the promised land?
There is a lot to say for LEADERSHIP and SMARTS. In fact, I would venture to say that it is WAY MORE IMPORTANT than having a big arm. Cuz THAT IS ALL Jamarcus Russell brings to the table.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I wonder if Paul HAckett has anything to do with Grads early success? Becuse it sure didn’t show with Jadeadly!
December 8th, 2009 at 10:58 am
We should not be too harsh on JaMarcus. Raiders have drafted and traded poorly before. Wilson, Marinovich, Pastorini, on and on.
Stabler was the only success and he was not a strong-arm QB. He was a wily, smart, take-no-prisoner and never-give-up type of player. Plunkette was that way too. Plunk would get hit, go down and he would get up and play as hard. Hotstetler was that way, so was Gannon. Now we think Gradkowski is that way. All successful Raiders QB, regardless of whether they reached the SuperBowl, had the never-say-die attitude.
JaMarcus cannot even get past owning his position, how can we begin to discuss his attitude? He has little usable feedback coming off the field. He is not a student of the game and that means reading the opponent, learning, strategizing and immediately changing his own looks, head swings, footwork to adapt. Until he does that, he will be no different than Marc Wilson. He will always be someone who seems out of place, out of sync and unable to work.
HOpefully, he has the desire to be a good QB and he will learn. I think his time has run out. If he hangs on for another season, it will be his last in Oakland and possibly the NFL.
December 8th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Gradkowski runs and behaves a lot like Garcia, so there may be some chemistry there. He also reminds me a little of the young Joe Montana. This is not to say Gradkowski can get there but he moves in the pocket and runs like Montana.
Gradkowski deserves all the credit but it is only three games so far. The potential for “greatness”, like that of Stabler, Gannon and Plunk, depends on when a QB fights heart and soul to win a game even when the defense louses up. That is what separates a good QB from an average QB.
Gradkowski showed that important flash last Sunday, now we have to see if he can do it again and again. When the defense is beaten, can Gradkowski kick, scream, shove and get his offensive team moving to score? Stabler, Montana, Plunk and Gannon did.

nah, the Patriots will take a flyer on him. they always sniff around our trash and try to find a diamond. worked well with Moss. not so much with Doug Gabriel, Lamont Jordan, Andrew Walter, Terdell Sands & Derrick Burgess

Bruce is a younger Jeff Garcia without the lisp.
also without the hot wife and pro bowls though.

Sorry, I would add Hotstetler too as one of the few excellent Raiders QB’s over the years.

Patience with Cable will pay off. We need to keep him to have any continuity on this team going into next season. Go Bruce. I think we should all cheer him like they used to cheer Isaac Bruce. It is well deserved so far.

It was welcome last evening to hear the edge in Gruden’s voice when a clip was showed of the fumble in the snow. one could easily hear that Jon is ever p1ssed off about it as Madden has been about Franco Harris all these many years later.
