Gradkowski AFC offensive player of week
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 at 5:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski has been named AFC offensive player of the week, according to Raiders.com.
Gradkowski threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter of a 27-24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the first quarterback to bring his team from behind to ahead with a touchdown pass three times in the fourth quarter since Stats, LLC began tracking it in 1991, and the first Raiders quarterback to throw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter since Ken Stabler in 1979.
Gradkowski was 20 of 33 for 308 yards and had no interceptions. He was 10 of 16 for 188 yards and the three TDs in the fourth quarter.
Looking down on Gradkowski in the photo in the Raiders Web site is a cutout of JaMarcus Russell, with Gradkowski in the middle holding up a football in the victorious locker room.

This is something Jamarcus Russell’ aka Black Moses will never achieve.

Bruce Almighty!
December 8th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
congrats to bruce & rest of the victorious raiders. if he had been in there in week 3 or 4, where would we be now??
December 8th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Good. Now Al Davis can get another draft pick or more money when he dumps him off to New England. Got to get more track stars for the franchise QB to throw to. Get over it.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
Just waiting for Al to call Gradkowski a great player.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
When did “Get over it” become the new “It is what it is.” You know what I mean? For the last year and a half I couldn’t go 20 minutes without hearing someone say “it is what it is.” Then for the last few weeks the same thing is happening with “Get over it.” What gives?
December 8th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Any congratulatory words from Al, yet? After all, he called Russell a great player, when Russell has not gotten an offensive player of the week award. Come on, Al. Tell those few Russell guys left over in the Raider Nation that Gradkowski is great, and to get over it.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Chris, why would you want to insult Al Davis and his terminology? What kind of fan are you?
“Russell is a great player, get over it” – Al Davis ( in his letter to Lane Kiffin)
December 8th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
I still say Al set up Kiffin’s Tennessee guys on that armed robbery charge. You know an SEC team like that is paying those kids more money than they know what to do with.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Good eye, Jerry. Why haven’t they put Gradkowski in the background design on the Raiders’ web page? It’s still Raider greats JaMarcus Russell and Jim Plunkett.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
DR EVIL.
I LOVE IT HE’S MAKING AL LOOK BAD WHILE MAKING THE TEAM LOOK GOOD. LMFAO
December 8th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Bruce is the Man!
Amazing what 1 player can do for a franchise…
December 8th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Any congratulatory words from Al yet? Remember, it’s up to Al rather or not Gradkowski starts next year. Not Gradkowski, or any fans. Al called Russell a great player for accomplishing nothing. Any positive words for Grads? And, as Jerry pointed out, It’s Russell still on Raiders.com’s wallpaper. It doesn’t take long to change wallpaper. Raiders have a web design department. One phone call, and Russell is off the wallpaper. Seems if the organization was as serious as you guys about dumping Russell and giving the keys to Grad, this would have been done. I could be cynical.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
If you guys owned the Raiders, and you were convinced Grad is the man and Russell is garbage, wouldn’t you reflect that in your organizational image, right up to the web page’s wallpaper? Wouldn’t you want your increasingly critical fan base, that just put up a billboard calling for your head, to know that changes are being made? Al seems to be mum on the issue.

…………..
If the Raiders keep up this pace, she’ll change her name. Or go by a nickname. She’ll hate her parents forever.

There are 500 people in the United States named ESPN.
No joke.

Dorks. Their kids are going to hate them. Why don’t they think about that? They’ll regret it later, when their daughter ESPN changes her name to Amber and doesn’t show up for holiday dinners.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
And, naming your daughter after the Raiders… Might as well name her after a porn star. The humiliation she’ll face as soon as she enrolls in school will be no different. I could see naming your kid after the Raiders in the ’60s, so that way the team was good while they were in school. But they’d be paying for it now.

Great Gradkowski lives!!
Bowdown to the Great Gradkowski!!
I say we keep Russell and Grads and let them grow together on the sam eteam in casse either stumbles.
But I’m really for re-signing all 3 QB’s that we have right now how can we go wrong?

December 8th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
After watching the replay tonite, we got hosed on both of Pitt’s 4th qtr td’s. Mendenhall got the corner after Howard was held, and Hines molested CJ to get open.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Of course Russell must renegotiate his deal to accomodate the others. It’s a win win situation. The other two are insurance against Russell not ever living up to his potential and by the time we really know Andrew Luck will be ready to take the helm.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:17 pm

December 8th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Oh yeah, and incidentally, hell of a game from Gradkowski. I can’t wait to see if he can keep this up, been a long time since the Raider Nation has had any real hope. Nothing like a backup-QB-makes-good success story.

And how about the insane hold on Shaughnessy on the final Hail Mary throw? If the Steelers ever came down with that I would have gone berserk. The LT has a handful of Shaughnessy’s jersey in the open field for a good 5 yards. It was the only thing holding him back from getting a sack there.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:30 pm

Gradkowski is impressive, guys. The better he is, the more draft picks and money Al gets from whatever team he dumps him off to. Al can stock up on more track stars for the great one to throw to.

December 8th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
the wrs sure caught a groove on sunday, jlh played well despite giving up on that route but dhb returning to the lineup will have him on the bench again. jlh 4 rec in 1 game, dhb 9 rec in 11 games
December 8th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I know that Dierdorf is clueless, but putting him next to Gumbel makes him sound like a Mensa member.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Another thing I saw in the replay. We blitzed more than I thought, we just didn’t get there. Many times we sent two lb and dropped a d-lineman into coverage. Never seemed to work either.
We need to stop trying to put a 300 pounder into coverage. We get penalties or burned when we do.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

i hate to be negative and the bearer of bad news, but no matter how well gradkowski plays, he’ll be gone or watching russell stink it up. same goes for DHB. need proof?? see williams, sam or jett, james. if al puts you on scholarship, you’re not going anywhere. jamarcus and al are our future. ouch.
at least he’ll get to learn another offense next year when cable gets canned.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
our wr core can be scary to opposing teams in the upcoming yrs. u figure with chazz and lou murph, u have a combo of size and speed. both know how to get open. plus if dhb develops thats yet another size and speed guy. just build up the o-line next yr. and hopefully whoever is at qb, will be able to utilize these weapons.

i agree, our receivers are promising, with the exception DHB(he’s a joke). however, like every great player over the last few years, they live in the abyss that is playing for al davis and his grossly outdated philosophies. their careers and this team will not flourish until al is history.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
i share the same sentiment that nothing will ever change with al at the helm of the org. but i also feel with some additions on the o-line and a dt here and a mlb there, we can do something by next season with cable as head coach
December 8th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
That’s just the problem, MT: AD really is History, and he knows it.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
i agree cable is below average play calling but how many drops, how many miss-throws, how many fumbles, especially by the qb, have we had this yr. once the play is called, its up to the players on the field to get it done.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
jruss was 95% part of the offenses’ problem. just watch this last game, pressure by pit and grad just stepped up in the pocket, scrambled and made some plays. i bet he’ll be the 1st to admit he missed 2 td’s on overthrows to jlh and murph on 2 of those scrambles. that was something jruss was totally incapable of
December 8th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
I think Cable’s getting better at OC. IMHO he was working with a limited playbook because of JR. Now he can open it up more each week. In the Pitt game we had more sets and patterns for the WR. Of course we did have that horrendous throwback, but at least he’s trying.
I also liked the changes he made in the 4th with regards to protection.

The Washington game this weekend will give Al Davis a chance to preview a potential QB candidate for the 2010 season.
Jason Campbell is a FA after this season.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
i love being a raider fan and i also hate being a raider fan. one glance at the roster, and you realize this team is loaded with talent and potential. that’s when i get all excited for about 15 minutes and then my buzz is killed when i remember who’s in charge. with a real GM and head coach AND al out of the way, this team could be right back on top. oh yeah, we could use some line depth; both sides of the ball.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Campbell has already set a career high with 15 TD passes. His 7.4 yards per attempt are a career best.
(STATS, Inc.)

on the other hand, our d still needs more gap discipline and a veteran mlb who can qb the d.

December 8th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
I don’t know why it’s so hard for so many fans to see this team and its owner for what they are. You have to be insane to think that Al Davis is going to keep Gradkowski and let Russell go. I think it’s just denial at work. They know what’s up. I guess they figure that if they keep saying Gradkowski’s the man and that Al will keep him, it might happen. Sort of like Dorothy saying there’s no place like home. No, not sort of, it’s exactly like that.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Seymour is a run stopper, and you have to build a defense to stop the run. You can’t have a pass stopping defense, and expect one guy to stop the run. We need a real GM and head coach, to build a system, is what we need. To build a run defense you’ve got to spend major loot on your front 7, something Al would never dream of doing, and then you have to know how to scout guys that can play the run, because it’s a rare commodity in this league. It takes a level of expertise that Al doesn’t have, nor never had.

McLain (sp)
If he’s a junior he should be. The money will be there. I’ve seen him rated as the #1 ILB/MLB.
I’d rather have a big body as the first pick and then pick up a 2nd round LB.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
The weirdness just won’t stop:
Given OAK’s projected draft position, Mr. Davis could be in position to draft…wait for it…Tim Tebow.
(And the ‘noise’ just keeps on comin’)
December 8th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Seems as though a major problem on the long runs is players getting out of their gaps.
Either they overpursue or can’t stay on their feet.
It would be nice to have a DT blow up a play every now and then.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Fullbacks/ quarterbacks don’t usually pan out in the NFL. Based on his arm and mechanics, he doesn’t rate a first round pick.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Absolutely agree Tebow/QB not worth #1; just that given Mr. Davis’ history of re-making certain players to fit other positions, i could see AD salivating at the prospect of having Russell & Tebow in the same backfield, TT @ H-back, slot guy, or something; ‘championship pedigree’, etc.

==================================
This is true.
Another problem is none of the Raider LBs are very good at stack and shed. Reviewing their games you notice them getting manhandled by TE’s and blown outa the hole 5-7 yds off the ball.
Morrison at MLB too often over runs plays. The defense has changed to give him the easiest possible job by limiting the need for audibles with simplistic play and formations and its helped somewhat and I think FS Michael Huff may be doing more to set the D as well.
Our safety play is responsible for some of the run gpas and break aways too, but in reality they’ve been the surprise this year and are starting to look like a strength which is very good news considering how important it is to to Davis’s pass rush / man coverage scheme and how long we’ve been without solid play at that crucial position.
An upgrade at LB needs to occur.

Even moving Scott to OLB doesn’t change much.

Anyone happen to catch ESPN2’s morning show “First Take” today?
Jon Ritchie, who is a regular on the show, was on the debate panel or whatever they call it with Skip Bayless. Interesting segment where they were talking about Tim Donaghy saying basketball is the easiest sport for an official to fix. They tossed the question to Ritchie and asked him if he felt he was ever in an NFL game that was fixed. He paused for a second or two kind of pondering how he should answer that question, but then went ahead to say he feels like the “Tuck Rule” game was essentially fixed. Whether it was revenge from the league office against the Raiders or sentiment favoring the red, white and blue “Patriots” winning the Super Bowl on the heels of 9/11 or whatever. Bayless agreed that it was an incredible screw job and added that Al Davis told him afterward that NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue was involved, via phone, in the curiously long replay review of that call.
Not sure if the clip is online somewhere but it was pretty remarkable to see a former NFL player come out and honestly say he believes a playoff game was fixed.
By the way, I really like Gruden on MNF. I don’t think he’s the next Madden though. For one, he’ll be back coaching soon enough. Two, I think he lacks a little something that Madden had. I do think Ritchie would be the next Madden if ever given a chance. He’s legitimately funny and not afraid to speak his mind. Always like hearing what he has to say.

The Raiders have always had bad calls against them. That’s pretty hard to debate if you’ve watched the games over the years.
I question whether there is deliberate intent to miscall a game, or if it’s just a subtle bias.
I read one time that teams with black uniforms get penalized more than white ones. That could be a factor.
But the steelers get most of the calls in their favour.
I think the league just hates Al and wants to stick it to him at every opportunity. It might change when Al is no longer in the picture.
The tuck rule was the ultimate screwgee though. There was no call on the field, and I’m certain the referee was informed about the rule from the league reps upstairs. Complete fix.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Whoa now, the “Tuck Game” is my cue – i’m out.
Peace.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Chris, for Paul Tagliabue to even be involved in that speaks volumns. That is the second time a commissioner took his psoition way too far when it comes to the Raiders. When we were trading to get John Elway Rozzelle called the Bears to stop the trade. Mr Davis went to bed thinking he had Elway only to wake up and see the trade had been recinded by the Bears who were the third part in a three team trade.
If you look at the film of the Steeler game the officials did everything they could to help Pittspuke win that game and they simply couldn’t do it. JLH was interferred with on the late hit play and the refs wiffed on the call. The holdng on the hailmary play was s blatant you wonder if the refs were getting paid.
Throughout the game all the Deeirdorf ever noticed were the infractions against the Steelers. Never thought what the Steelers were doing was a factor at all in just focused on the Raiders. On the long run by Mendenhall T Scott was held at the point which directly affected the play. then on Mario holding call there was no way that DT was going to get to Grads it reversed a big play.

I also recall seeing Jerry Rice on a TV talk show out here in NY a couple of years ago. He flat-out said that the Raiders always had to deal with more strange penalties and terrible calls that went against them than any other team. He said it was quite noticeable during his time in Oakland. He didn’t say this about the 49ers, the Seahawks or any other team he played for. So perhaps the greatest football player in the history of the game said there’s an anti-Raider bias in how games are officiated.

History shows that the league and it’s puppet officials and refs have had it in for Raiders and the old man Al.
The Raiders have been involved in the most controversial questionable calls out of all the teams in the NFL for a reason.
It’s a disturbing trend that is way more than just random coincidences.

NorthernD, I disagree about Scott not being a factor, I think his play has been a huge help. Tyvon just had a bad game which is very unlike him. That kid might be on his way to being a regular at the pro-bowl he is outstanding. I think Tyvon has a chance to be as good as George Aktkinson ever was. Mitchell, Branch and Huff are outstanding safeties. We just might be as talented at safety as we’ve ever been. If we can get a B Spikes in the draft this defense could rival the best defenses we’ve ever had. We’re just missing a great MLB and a little more speed off the edge.

Scott has been an improvement no doubt. But I think his best skill is just getting after the QB. Playing him in space, or asking him to fill the gap from the OLB spot is just not something he’s suited for. He’s got those long arms and he’ll let the blockers get in on body on occasion.
I would like to see him stay at DE, and bring in another OLB and MLB who is better at stuffing the run and finding the ball carrier.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Scott had 3 tackles for a loss his first week playing and 2 sacks. That’s 5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. I’d say he’s not playing bad. Of course he has to improve in some areas as he’s only now learning the position, but it looks very hopeful for the future.
As far as the draft, I’d say either a DT (a BIG one like the NT SD, Pitts etc. has) or a MLB.
But the fact of the matter is we’re making a lot of plays in the backfield (more takles for loss than almost any teams). We’re for the most part stopping things. If we can stop those big plays we’ve got a pretty quality “D” I think. It’s not far away. Probably more work on technique – a 2nd year with the same DC and one or two more “Solid” players in the middle.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
raiderzmaverick,
I think moving Scott around is helpful. Just let him and Seymour line up wherever they want to, and let them go.
Tommy Kelly has turned into more of a NT than a hybrid DE/DT. I don’t think that’s what Al had in mind when he gave him all that money.
I agree with looking for a DT. Suh or McCoy would be great, but I think they’ll be long gone when the Raiders draft.
Warrren has to do than just take up space in the Raiders want to improve though.

JLH had 4 catches for some 60+yds and drew a penalty late.
Murphy had 4 catches for 120+ and 2TDs
Raiders win the GAME!
The test for Cable/Davis comes when DHB is healthy. If DHB is in the starting lineup…then its business as usual….the B.S of trying to prove a point instead of trying to win a game.
And if DHB starts over JLH or Murphy then Cable should be FIRED for gross incompetence.

Chris, not that the NFL doesn’t have a vendetta against Al Davis, but I don’t think the tuck game was fixed. I think the refs just caved in to mob rule. That was the last game in that stadium. 60,000 drunken Bostonians were leaving the place then all of a sudden over the p.a. they announce that the play is under review. The refs looked up at that crowd and just said “F this” and gave it to NE, so they could get out of that. I’ll give you this much, had it been anyone other than the Raiders, it would have been a tougher decision for them to make. That’s where the league’s beef with Al comes into play. That it was so easy for them to pull it on the Raiders.

December 9th, 2009 at 12:01 am
The NFL’s not going to fix a Raider game and make a martyr out of Al Davis. The NFL hated Al Davis in the ’70s and ’80s too, even more so than now because of the AFL drama and Rozelle, etc, and they couldn’t stop the Raiders from winning 3 Super Bowls. The NFL cracked down on the safeties teeing off on receivers (Tatum and Atkinson) so the Raiders just adjusted and relied more on press man, not giving receivers room to get open to begin with (Hayes and Haynes). Al just had the right people helping him run his organization then and they found ways to win. The league didn’t fix games instead they just changed the rules every year to handicap Al, not unlike how they change them every year today to help out Brady and Manning. The NFL works from the top. If there’s any fixing in the NFL, it’s the players taking money from organized crime figures to keep within the spread, etc. I imagine this has been going on since the league began. Wherever there’s money there’s corruption. Al Davis has been losing the past 7 years because he’s either crazy, or he wants to to get the team out of Oakland. The NFL never wanted Al to win. That didn’t stop him back in the day. He’s stopping himself.

We seemed to be using him differently last year. He caught a lot of crossing routes shallow and then turned a pass which he caught 8 yards out to turn it into a 35 yards. I’d use him like the Patriots use Welker. Give him short passes and let him turn it into something more.

They were down 35-14 and they were going to take out Snake in the 3rd, but he argued with the coach, put his helmet back on and went back into the game.

I kind of worry for JLH. He’s on the small side and seems to take a lot big hits.
They should be thinking of a replacement for him because it doesn’t seem like he’s going to have a long career the way he’s going.
December 9th, 2009 at 1:14 am
I don’t think they want to give up on McFadden as a RB, but it would be nice to see him diversify.
Getting better as a receiver could only help him stay on the field longer.

I am not sure if the Washington game will sell out. Now, if we had beaten Dallas on Thanksgiving also, then maybe because that would have been 3 games in a row and the ever so coveted 2 games on the road straight. Read Jerry’s chat and he seems to be hearing the same things I am about Jamarcus.
Jerry called him a “headcase” and subtly hinted that there may be more “issues” at hand beyond simple immaturity.
I think we are cooking up another fired “for cause” event, LOL. Although I don’t think Al will embaress Jamarcus. But he will be asked to take a pay-cut and I think Jamarcus will refuse and quit.
If we can be so lucky!!!!!
December 9th, 2009 at 6:31 am
If JaMarcus wants to stay in the NFL (because right now, i don’t think any team will take him) he would take a pay cut and sit on the bench. I mean come on now…how easy of a job is that?
December 9th, 2009 at 6:33 am
What if Jamarcus doesn’t say anything to the media for the rest of the year, pretty likely, than packs up after the Ravens game and isn’t heard from in a month or two?
Are the Raiders going to beg him back?
I think Russell would like to be removed of the burden of being an NFL player.

Murphy is prolly the only WR 100%
And Todd Watkins hasnt played much but it seems he has a way 2 get open in crucial 3rd and long situations.
This time Watkins was isolated on Woodley, and it was just a 5 yard cross that Watkins got 12 yards out of.
The coaching staff is finally able to use the the mis-matches it can create with our highly-explosive personell, imo
No LB in the NFL is gonna go 1 on 1 vs.Watkins on a 5 yard cross and win,imo
Plus they did it in Pittsburgh…. with calls favoring the home team
With 1:48 left on the clock, down by 4,89 yards to go
YESSS

To all the Raider Nation who reads this blog. I am proposing a naming contest for Dakota’s son. Originality will be needed.
The winning person will receive two tickets to two games during the pre season where I sit.
The names for his son should be colorful, dynamic, have some Raider theme, Cub theme, and Laker theme to the name. Dig deep and think hard.
Two game tickets await the winner. Dakota will have final say on the name and will select the winner on originality and if the name is used.

December 9th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Before we all crown Gradkowski the new johnny U.
A couple of things to remember.
He has a weak arm, thats OK if he can step into his throws.
With this OL thats not very often.
A lot of his throws were lame ducks that the Receiver made a great play on or the DB just blew it.
You compare the Murphy catch and the TD throw.
The first catch will be picked off 9 out of ten times.
The TD throw he was able to step into it and make a nice throw.
He scrambles well and that makes him more suited for playing behind this line but lets see him over 8-10 games and see how teams begin scheming him.

FREE KITTENS
A pretty little girl named Suzy was standing on the sidewalk in front of her home. Next to her was a basket containing a number tiny creatures; in her hand was a sign announcing FREE KITTENS.
Suddenly a line of big black cars pulled up beside her. Out of the lead car stepped a tall, grinning man.
“Hi there, little girl, I’m President Obama. What do you have in the basket?” he asked.
“Kittens.” little Suzy said.
How old are they? asked Obama.
Suzy replied, “They’re so young, their eyes aren’t even open yet.”
“And what kind of kittens are they?” “Democrats,” answered Suzy with a smile.
Obama was delighted. As soon as he returned to his car, he called his PR chief and told him about the little girl and the kittens.
Recognizing the perfect photo op, the two men agreed that the president should return the next day, and, in front of the assembled media, have the girl talk about her discerning kittens.
So the next day, Suzy was again standing on the sidewalk with her basket of “FREE KITTENS” when another motorcade pulled up, this time followed by vans from ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN.
Cameras and audio equipment were quickly set up, then Obama got out of his limo and walked over to little Suzy.
“Hello, again,” he said, “Id love it if you would tell all my friends out there what kind of kittens you’re giving away..”
“Yes sir,” Suzy said. “They’re Republicans.”
Taken by surprise, the president stammered, “But… but… yesterday, you told me they were DEMOCRATS.”
Little Suzy smiled and said, “I know. But today, they have their eyes open.”

I think he could be a Chad Pennington type QB.
Good worker good manager but will never scare a team with his arm.
That might get you a good record but against the top teams they will scheme him out of the game.
That means he can be our transitional QB.
I think you can bring in a young QB to sit and learn now.
Or you decide JR is that young QB.
But Gradkowski will never get you to the top of the mountain.
I say dump JR now.
Sign David Carr and let him and Grads scrap it out for the #1

Kiffin the pimp????????LMAO!
“The NCAA is probing Tennessee’s football recruiting practices, according to several prep prospects, their family members and high school administrators, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
Much of the investigation is centered on the use of recruiting “hostesses” who have helped the program convince prep prospects to choose Tennessee by befriending prep prospects and attending their high school games, according to the report. Because the hostesses are considered an extension of the university, it could be considered a violation of NCAA rules if they helped recruit prospective athletes off campus.
Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton confirmed the school was being investigated but declined to address the allegations in the report. “Typically, we do not comment on inquires that are in progress,” he said, according to the newspaper.
Tennessee has committed at least six secondary NCAA violations — unintended violations of rules not deemed to have given the school an unfair competitive or recruiting advantage — since Lane Kiffin took over as coach.
The NCAA appears to be strongly interested in Tennessee’s use of hostesses — students who are part of a university group that hosts prospective students on campus visits, including athletes. It was not clear whether the university sent the hostesses to visit the football players, the newspaper reported.
In one case, hostesses attended a football game at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., one of the nation’s best high school programs, where at least three potential Tennessee recruits were playing, according to the report.
Marcus Lattimore, a running back who had made an unofficial visit to Tennessee but was not interested in attending the school, said the hostesses brought signs, including one that read, “Come to Tennessee,” according to the report.
Two of Lattimore’s high school teammates, Brandon Willis and Corey Miller, have orally committed to Tennessee. Lattimore said the hostesses were “real pretty, real nice and just real cool” and thinks they had “a lot” of influence in his teammates making oral commitments, according to the report.
“I haven’t seen no other schools do that,” Lattimore said, according to the report. “It’s crazy.”
Gary Willis, Brandon Willis’ father, said the NCAA had interviewed his son about the hostesses’ visit to the game, according to The Times. Gary Willis said the girls met his son at Tennessee’s football camp last summer and told him they would be attending one of his games. He also said the trip was not arranged by Tennessee coaches or staff.
NCAA officials have visited with four prospects and are scheduled to visit two others this week, according to the report.

I think they need to blitz the hell out of Cambell. Looks like the Raiders secondary can handle the WR’s. The need to cause chaos, and make JC look like the typical qb that he is.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:06 am
It will be good to see how DC’s around the league try to defence Gradkowski….That TD to Chaz was set up on a pitch 2 Fargas that got 10 yds earlier.Heat of the game steAlers see the same pitch coming to Fargas and
BINGO….I think DC’s around the league are gonna have their hands full.Man Grads and Fargas SOLD that pitch, a thing of beauty, imo.

Vegas,
My only point is that we need to see this a couple more times before we crown him the QB for 2010. That’s all.
He wouldn’t be the first QB to come from nowhere, so there is a chance he could suddenly be a starting caliber NFL qb, but the odds are heavily against it and I don’t think you can call it after one good game.
Looking at all of his career starts you can see that this was out of the norm…yes he might have transformed before our eyes, but in all likelihood he will be back to form in the coming weeks.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Dakota,
You may need to see it a few more times, but I don’t, he is our best shot at winning the division in 2010.
After I posted about my last comment, I did think back on Kelly Holcombe of the Browns having like a 400 yard game in a playoff loss to the Steelers a few years back. So sure it could be a fluke.
Just seems like Al can totally luck into this one, as a leader like Bruce is exactly what this team needs post-Jamarcus.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Grad will be the starter next year. Mark my words.

December 9th, 2009 at 9:19 am
I see getting maybe 4-5 sacks this weekend. Their O-line is banged up and this is such a huge letdown game for the Redskins.
But we need more first-half points this weekend.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:19 am
I also think Fargas might have a hard time with Haynesworth in the middle ( if he is in.) Get it to DMAC on the edges.

you got a problem with yourself…
We finally have a QB who is trying to be his best, has done nothing but play well, motivate his teammmates and win 2 of 3. i’ll take that ANYDAY over what we’ve been given these last 4 years…
December 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
I have said this before. The old lady is a Bucs fan and I had a chance to watch Grad play weekly. As a starter and as a back up. I was impressed with him when he played in Tampa. I always thought he was going to mature into a starter somewhere. I think his shot is with Oakland.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Let’s see how the rest of the season plays out before we talk about the QB position.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:35 am
AND the biggest thing,imo
He was prepared when called upon
December 9th, 2009 at 9:35 am
I agree that we need to be careful before labeling Grads the next best thing to come out of nowhere since Rich Gannon. But, he’s CLEARLY the better than Russell’s lazy fat azz. That much we know. We don’t need to see another game or even another throw to conclude that.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Gradkowski is a good quarterback. He looks good every time I’ve seen him. The naysayers are idiots.
But with DHB as your starting wideout, Peyton Manning would have a hard time being successful.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:36 am
Totally agree Big.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Someone else needs to step on DHB’s foot.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I gave Russell the benefit of the doubt for a long time, but now that he has demonstrated that he is indifferent to being benched I no longer think he should be allowed to wear the silver and black. I hope he is cut this offseason.
Had he stood up and took this challenge on like a man and put in more work and effort, then I could see giving him another shot, but it appears he has not done so, so forget him.
But that doesn’t mean I am going to sit here and pretend we have our starting 2010 QB in Garbagekowski.

On Gradkowski:
Pros:Very accurate throwing for over 70% completion in his junior campaign; strong armed, very athletic; can beat teams running and throwing; tight spirals, strong armed; good leader, good holding point and release, can stretch the field vertically
Cons:Needs to bulk up from 210 lbs.; does not have the best height at 6′2; has not faced the best defenses playing in the MAC, but neither did Roethlisberger

Florida Pete,
Who can figure out which way to send the former Hog? He does not seem to be feeding at the trough of scintillating results. And did you see how easily Pittsburgh dissected the effing gadget play? Opposing coaches know that McFade isn’t utilized often in any base plays as he doesn’t produce, so they have their men watching for tricks whenever he is in.
And then there are the fumbles.
Perhaps he could be a gunner on punt coverage.

I’ve watched the Raiders Steelers game several times and made a few observations about Gradkowski: when the pressure was closing in all around him, Bruce kept his wits and either made a play or got rid of the ball without a loss of yardage. Also, I watched his eyes and saw no fear or confusion. He appeared to be thinking ahead to the next play, not what happened on the last play.

DMAC is explosive, he could take one to the house at anytime. It’s no longer a matter of saving his energy and keeping him healthy due to his importance in the run game as we have 2 other competent backs. He may cough one up but Fargas coughed many up his first couple years, gotta learn sometime and no better time when were out of the playoff hunt. The more touches he gets regardless of situation the more confident he’ll become thus he’ll improve in the run game as well

December 9th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Dakota,
so much coaching turnaround has killed this team. Al Davis drafts are so bad that fans are just hoping to reach 8-8 each year. If we dump Cable now after Al backed him against Hanson and the history of violence towards women, chose him over Gilbride, etc it will be back to square one. There is no guarantee that the next coach will be better than Cable either. nobody wants to work for Al. young guys like Kiffin may use us as a stepping stone and have 1 foot out the door the day they sign Al’s cheapskate contract with no authority.
If Cable can rally this team to a 6-10 record I think he stays, for at least 1 more year. and I’m fine with that
a new coach likely means that Hackett, Tollner, Marshall, etc are gone as well … this team needs continuity imo
December 9th, 2009 at 10:59 am

Rockstar,
Sounds familiar to last year when people were just happy we went 3-3 to end the year. What did it turn into the following year…one win every three games so far.
Now we might win 6 games in 2009 and that will be enough to give hope for 2010?
I just can’t buy it…too many times has this team looked lost and unprepared under Cable. We win one and then take a couple of weeks off…
If Cable can get this team to 7-9 (and be competitive even in the losses) then I will get off his back…but from past experience, I just don’t see that happening.

Rockstar, you are a whiney punkazz
December 9th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Dakota, that is not only a Cable problem that has gone on here for several years.

Captain,
google “tom cable + outside the lines”
should be easy enough to find.

I understand that, but it is still the job of the head coach to have the team ready to play week in and week out. It is not impossible…even Kiffin had this team ready to play almost every week in 2007, we lost a ton of 4th quarter games that year.
On the other hand, Cable wins a game, then the team is blown out…9 blowout losses under Cable thus far…he needs to show that he can get this ready every week. Not win every week, but just be ready to play.

Dakota,
another thing to think about …
I know you’re not a Gradkowski fan, but Paul Hackett may be a big reason for his success. he’s certainly the reason that the Bucs drafted him and the Raiders acquired him this offseason. If Hackett gets fired along with Cable and his other cronies and Graddy gets resigned to compete for the starting job I think his chances of having success in another scheme under another coach are even far less than what you’re predicting for the rest of this season!
December 9th, 2009 at 11:14 am
I don’t educate myself by reading an article from ESPN. If he has a court record than I would be interested in that. Otherwise, I do not care what a woman going through a divorce says through her attorney, or a girlfriend wanting a piece of his head coaching earnings. Try being less emotional and more objective…You must be a liberal?
December 9th, 2009 at 11:14 am
Can someone please do me a favor and go to Alameda and step on DHB’s other foot?
December 9th, 2009 at 11:16 am
CaptainBlack,
You do recall Tom Cable ADMITTING he hit his first wife right?
Take his word for it, not Rockstar’s.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Dakota, I want consistency too. I’m just not certain why it is not happening, and I am not ready to blame Cable yet. There seems to be a lot of cooks in the kitchen.

He said he slapped her for cheating. That is not a history of violence. That is an act of violence. Say, who have you hit in the past?
December 9th, 2009 at 11:18 am
First person fired should be our special teams coach! But then again, we have Russell returning kicks and Johnny Lee Scary returning punts.

I once punched a fellow marine in bootcamp. Do I now have a history of violence against marines? Please

DMAC, I agree. Schneider should be asked back.

The more touches he gets regardless of situation the more confident he’ll become thus he’ll improve in the run game as well
*********************
DMac is a BUST as a NFL RB. He goes down quicker than a 25¢ hooker. His only salvation is to be repositioned as a slot WR. There, I believe, he could thrive by getting him the ball in the open and then he can run for a score. Face it on a regular basis, DMac vs. a front 7, he loses every time. He’s not built for a between the tackles RB. He’s had more than enough time and opportunity to prove this obsevation wrong. He hasn’t done it. Leave the running duty to the REAL RB’s – Fargas & Bush. Move DMac to WR and then let’s see what develops.

This is a rather dull group.

December 9th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I really want to agree with some of you guys about Cable…about continuity and all that stuff…
But I keep seeing the Giants, Jets, Broncos and Cowboys crushing us…and how most of the young players are not developing under Cable…and I just can’t buy what you are selling.
FIRE CABLE!
December 9th, 2009 at 11:30 am
I’m hoping that Cable keeps Walker and Morris in the lineup as RG & C respectively. Satele & Carlisle are not getting it done. This kind of move should stiffen up the pass protection. Now, if only we could find a decent replacement for Green.

I believe L Walker was in 4 Gallery and Morris in 4 Satelle
December 9th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Everyone keeps talking about Al Davis and his picks. Besides Russell and the fact that he doesn’t have the work ethic to be great, I don’t think the draft has been that bad.
I know, DHB is a question mark, but look at this, We have a first round talent and a fouth round talent at WR. Our fouth round talent does have a lot of upside and with a dedicated QB to work with he will get better.
Tim Brown said that he thought DHB might have a depth issue as it appears the ball gets on top of him before he’s ready to catch. He said that he will be running a WR camp this year to help out some of the young WR and will be reaching out to DHB. It he he’s dropping these passes next season, I admmit he’s a lost cause.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:35 am
What young guys do you want to develop Dakota?
Darren sucks, Russell is a head-case and DHB can’t catch, but other than that there are a bunch of young guys developing.
Murphy, Miller, Mario, Branch, Huff, Chaz and of course Bruce.

Yes they were. But, what I’m suggesting is replacing Satele & Carlisle with Morris & Walker. Those two additions would make for a much stronger O=line.

Sounds like T. Brown is campaigning for a job with the Raiders once again.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:38 am
As bad as the DHB pick was, Murphy was just as good.
tough to find another 2009 4th rounder coming anywhere close to producing more than Murphy is right now.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:39 am
You don’t think it is important to develop those three first round picks that cost upwards of $100 million dollars Vegas?
December 9th, 2009 at 11:40 am
The way the draft has gone in recent years, I wouldn’t mind trading the first round pick for a proven vet.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:43 am
a very high percentage of the time, first round picks dont mean sh-t. Look at the numbers. So many quality players are buried in the draft, it’s about scouting and knowing the players.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:43 am
My vote is to give Bey some time to develop into a quality WR. Don’t blame him that he was picked 7th in the draft. That’s on AD. Rightfully, he should have been a late 1st or 2nd round pick. That fact combined with the fact that the QB he’s been working with is terrible might acount for his lack of development. Let’s not shoot him yet. Give him another year and time with a QB that can throw an accurate pass and let’s see. Who knows, he might end up as the next Cliff Branch or warren Wells. He’s a good kid with a good work ethic. He deserves a little more time.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Can’t do much if Darren is the easiest tackle in the league and Russell has other priorities.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Dakota, the point being he slapped a woman once; therefore, he does not have a history of volence toward women. Your ignorance is unacceptable. Please sacrifice yourself at the alter of stupidty and end the bloodline.
