Q&A with JaMarcus Russell
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, December 10th, 2009 at 12:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.
A transcript of an interview JaMarcus Russell gave to local reporters, his first comments since being downgraded to backup quarterback in favor of Bruce Gradkowski:
Q: How’s it going?
Russell: Going pretty good, as you could see. We’re doing a lot better on the field. I guess the change was (done) in the correct way. But something to learn from, you know what I mean? When it first happened, wasn’t too happy with it. But the thing is, I look at it, we’re both on the same team, playing under the same roof. So the best thing to me is to be a great team player, great teammate, and the same if I was in there. He’d be doing the same. That’s pretty much my outlook on it.
Q: What was the message you got from this? What areas would the coach like to see improved?
Russell: In every way. You can always improve yourself. Any way, shape, form or fashion, before you point the finger. As long as you’re taking care of business at home, then everything else can be taking place. Right now, I’ve learned from it. Because I’ve done it before. Not from starter to the bench thing, but just about coming into college. I red-shirted my freshman year, so I’ve kind of been in a similar situation. Best thing to learn from is to take it in stride and just keep moving. We all have road bumps in our life and this just happens to be one bump.
Q: Do you think it was deserved?
Russell: I wouldn’t say that. You know, any guy that’s competitive, which we want to be out there, and I’d say that about myself. But I guess coach wanted to go in a different direction.
Q: Do you look at guys like Alex Smith and Vince Young as paths to follow?
Russell: Uhh, you can. I’m pretty sure that those things just ain’t happening. It was something to that, you look like now, guys are making plays. That’s the thing we were lacking. We wasn’t making plays. Now, a few plays have been made.
Q: Do you consider yourself QB of future?
Russell: No doubt. That hasn’t changed in my mind at all.
Q: Would you be open to compete for starting job next year?
Russell: I will work my butt off to be that guy.
Q: But if they ask you to rework your deal?
Russell: Oh, no. That’s over and done with. I don’t even consider that as a part of it.
Q: Talked to Al Davis?
Russell: Oh, yeah. We talk. Both guys have good spirits about it. It’s just something right now that we’re just going through. I don’t see the big deal about it. He’s my teammate. You all acting like I’m going against somebody else. It’s a big deal, but it’s really not.
Q: Do you expect to get more time this season?
Russell: The way things are going right now he’s doing a good job out there. I always prepare like I’m that guy. If my number is called, then I’ll be ready.
Q: What is he doing well?
Russell: Now it’s just all around. Guys are just making plays around him. In the Dallas game after you go out and win in Cincinnati there wasn’t plays really made the whole game, you know what I mean. Going into Pittsburgh, guys were making plays for him. That’s what a quarterback needs, his surrounding players. That’s what was going on.
Q: Will you be a better QB when you do get your chance?
Russell: You can learn a lot from this so yes I do think so.
Q: You getting a lot of support from family, friends, etc.?
Russell: Oh yeah. It’s not the end of the world. There’s better days to come. Just move on from it. I learned from the first game and now I can just be a team player and show my support I have, It’s not like I’m going against somebody else. We’re teammates. Who wouldn’t want to be a starting quarterback of an NFL team. Everybody don’t get the chance or opportunity to play in the NFL or a football game. Why wouldn’t I want that chance?
Q: Do you expect an open competition next year?
Russell: Uh, I’m not sure. If that’s the road they want to take, then, hey, we have to go out and fight our butts off to be that guy.
Q: Anything you want to accomplish in the offseason?
Russell: “Work hard, that’s all the time. You got to do that on your own. That’s going to be part of the workout plan anyway.”
Q: Are your weight and work ethic not an issue, it’s just the on-field performance?
Russell: Yeah, that’s about it.
Q: How would you grade yourself this season?
Russell: Uh, kind of hard because there was times where you try to get guys a chance to make plays and at the early part of the year, it wasn’t happening. So, the quarterback job, I say he looks for more help around from everybody because he can’t do it himself. It wasn’t so well but at times it was. When we look at film, it don’t be as bad as it seems on the field always.
Q: How hard to play without Schilens, McFadden, Gallery, etc. . .
Russell: “Pretty hard but you can’t really base it upon that because you put guys in knowing that they going to go out there and they’ll play the same. So, I wouldn’t really put that on the table.”
Q: Were you surprised when you heard the news that you weren’t starting anymore?
Russell: I really was. I really was. At first, it was very embarrassing to get pulled out. I think that would be for anybody. I kind of took it, sat down and thought about it, just prayed about the situation, and God, he don’t make no mistakes. So, kind of look at it like that.
Q: What’s it like going through this for the first time? Difficult?
Russell: “It was. It really was. Like I said, it’s the first time for me and that’s why I say, it’s not the end of the world. It’s my third year, and I have a lot more football to play.”
Q: What are people going to see when you hit the field again?
Russell: A totally different JaMarcus. People going to have their opinion, and I really don’t pay too much attention to that. I worry about JaMarcus and JaMarcus only.
Q: How will you be different?
Russell: Time will tell. Time will tell. Time will really tell.
NOTE: Players who were not at practice included LG Robert Gallery, WR-KR Nick Miller and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. DE Greg Ellis was a late arrival but appeared to be a spectator. Samson Satele was practicing with Chris Morris lining up for drills at left guard.
More to come following Tom Cable’s post-practice press briefing . . .

I really hope this dipstick gets cut after he refuses to renegotiate. Hopefully he has already blown most of his first contract in the anticipation of future income that will no longer be there for him (like any other team would sign him for big money).
This guy has Burger King written all over him….no offense to any of you Burger King employees…

Just work hard, practice with your wides and be ready to LEAD next year JR!
Washington injuries could help Oakland. Haynesworth is out against our 2nd string O line. Lets hope its enough. DeAngleo hall may be out too.

Q: Are your weight and work ethic not an issue, it’s just the on-field performance?
Russell: Yeah, that’s about it.
wake up Jamarcus. damn kid. Come into camp lean and mean. Know the playbook. come to meetings early. what does this kid not get? Is he really that stupid?
December 10th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
He still refuses to take ownership and thats why his teamates don’t like him.smh He say the only difference between him and bruce is that his teamates are making plays now. Like he wasn’t really just throwing the ball 50 yards off, and directly to defenders. Should the starting job be an open competition?? Im not sure?? Oh what so you just expect tem to just hand you the job jamarcus?? Is weight and work ethic part of the issue?? nope just guys weren’t making plays for the qb… Will you restucture your contract?? No.. This guys a bum get him out of here. If he does well somewhere else in the future who cares because we’re a better team without him. Randy was way more decorated as a player and had success on another team but no one misses him. So if we got rid of jamarcus and he had success(which he won’t) trust me no one will miss him either.
December 10th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Yea dakota im with you on getting rid of this bum. We got rid of D. Hall with his fat contract to better the team I hope al wises up and get rid of jamarcus as well because from reading his script he still doesn’t get it and it sounds as if he never will. If I were a lineman and al forced the team to start him I’d allow him to get smacked for the better of the team. Sounds harsh but its true.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Ask Russell who’s responsible for him being in a Raider uniform to begin with.

December 10th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Oh c’mon trmr don’t start that. No one expected jamarcus to be as bad as he is. I never wanted him because I was infatuated with the play of calvin johnson but the media and may other raider fans thought jamarcus was the truth. He was going top 5 regardless, so not just al would have made that mistake.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
He’s a cancer. A guy making that much dough, I hope his laziness and nonchalance doesn’t rub off on the other guys but it has to. Listening to your ipod bobbing your head to the music during the 4th quarter of a close game while your coaches are talking to you? Saying Bruce’s good play is the result of the other guys making plays is throwing Bruce and the other guys under the bus. Make him 3rd string to really teach him a lesson. I don’t know if I even want this guy in the lockeroom
December 10th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Like I said earlier, What a Maroon! This guy really is THE BIG DUMMY. He obviously doesn’t get it. I really believe this person has a learning disability. You would think he was from a foreign country the way he butchers the English language. To some extent that speaks volumes of why he most likely will never become the leader that he needs to be as an NFL caliber QB.
JaBustus has BOTH physical and mental issues to overcome before he can ever be considered as a viable starting NFL QB. He’s obviously still in a state of denial. He doesn’t realize or accept the fact that it is he and not others who is the detriment to this team’s success. Until he accepts responsibility, he will fail. It has become evident that to him, money is the issue. He’s simply too dumb to see beyond tomorrow as it applies to his future in the NFL. If AD were smart, he’d write JR off as a bad dream and move on.
While JR may be able to throw the ball 85 yards while on his knees, he couldn’t hit a bull in the a$$ with a shotgun. He’s an out of control individual – in more ways than one. He has no hope of success in this league unless he changes his attitude 180 degrees. Right now he’s nothing more than a spoiled kid who needs his a$$ kicked on a regular basis.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
But I find it funny how jamarcus is suddenly finally willing to speak after all the praise bruce has been getting lately. He wants to steal bruces shine and make sure he isn’t forgotten, but nobody wants you here bum. Do us all favor, stay at home sippin on ya codine and just quit.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
In the words of dean Wormer from Animal House”Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son” Maybe fat, rich and stupid is though. Jabustus got his payday and does not care about the Raiders or football anymore. All he’s worrying about, is the next party and what color interior he should get for the Bentley.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
I never believed the NFL draft was a precise science. I guess somebody other than Ralphs Supermarket should hire MadmanRaider and put him in charge of a pro scouting department. Something tells me MadmanRaider would pooh pooh his diaper.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
besides speaking in tongues (lol for that one Cap’n Black), sincere as his prayers to God might have been, whaddaya wanna bet that the first words outta the Divine Presence for JRuss were ” Don’t give back any of the cash.”
December 10th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
And let’s eat
December 10th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Is he on drugs? What rambling incoherent responses to softball questions. JaMarcus should have said “I will work harder to improve myself physically and mentally, learn the playbook, come in early and leave late. Work with my receivers and reearn the trust of my team.” Instead we get babble.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Russell: “Work hard, that’s all the time. You got to do that on your own. That’s going to be part of the workout plan anyway”
*****************************************
Apparently, to work hard all the time was not part of the previous workout plan….anyway.

Heard a story once that Al drafted a kid in the first round as well. That kid was so dumb that he went and bought a new car that he couldnt fit in. He had to open the sunroof to be able to fit in it. I think he was a Dline guy and it was in an article about Alzado and the boys.
Looks like lighting struck twice with Al again.

This guy is the Sarah Palin of nfl interviews. WTF is he even talking about half the time?
“Q: How will you be different?”
Russell: Time will tell. Time will tell. Time will really tell.
Sounds a lot like what type of magazines or periodicals do you read? “OH all of them..ya know”
December 10th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
He still has no clue.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

December 10th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
JaMarcus is not very smart, but I don’t f care. I want him to watch film, work hard, compete for the job… He should follow Gradkowski example, he has half the tools JaMarcus has but he tries hard
December 10th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
He doesn’t get it! He’s not taking any sort of responsibility for his play, and while I don’t think that every loss and bad play can be attributed solely to him, he doesn’t seem to realize or want to take responsibility for ANY of the bad games or plays. Leaders take responsibility in the bad times and give praise in the good times. He’s got it backwards.
I don’t think he will get it until he has to work for his job next year, actually compete instead of hearing “Russell’s the man, Russell’s the man,” from Cable throughout training camp. When he is playing second string in the thrid presesason game, then he will realize that he has to change some things around in order to get his job back.
I think Steve Young has said “You’re never as bad or as good as they say you are.” I think Russell is salvageable, but it starts with him, and so far it doesn’t seem to have started.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
if i were a raiders receiver id be a little po’d at this guy. i mean i understand that the receivers dropped a few key passes, but can u blame it on them that they’re surprised when the ball hits them in the hands once in a blue moon? but no its never jamrcus’ fault its, “-RUSSELL: Uh, kind of hard because there was times where you try to get guys a chance to make plays and at the early part of the year, it wasn’t happening.”
slacker….
December 10th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Sounds like Jamarcus should lay of the Robitussin and weed and strippers. it is a bad combination. Making him stupider than he already is.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I worry about JaMarcus and JaMarcus only.
******************************
The most selfish 7 words one can say.
And dropped a 3rd part reference,lol
What a clown
December 10th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
JaMarcus just can’t blame the receivers for hiss horrible play, but the fact is his 2 best passes this season where:
- a 50+ yards bomb for TD to Hey-Bey – DROPPED
- A 50+ yarder to Murphy called back for OL Penalty
And had a TD called back in week 1, where Murphy had a TD
That are facts, anyway he can’t blame anybody but him
December 10th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
El Tato…u are correct. It does not take a rocket scientist to play QB in the NFL, but good grief, study. You know JaMarcus is a democrat: he’s expects to be paid without having to work.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Personally I would hope that a switch goes off for Russell whereby he gets it (he’s not the first overpaid athlete with an entourage of family and friends on the gravy train always harping – “You da man. You da man”, and some of those athletes have changed.). It would take a vast restructuring of his psyche. Not unlike being a Cubs fan, there’s always hope until it is once more crushed.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
MaddenRaider and JaMarcus have much in common. All mouth with no teeth
December 10th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Im right there with you Lonetree i also hope a “switch goes off.” but if this is response after seeing the hard work from gradkowski its not loookin too good.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Capt. Black,
I enjoy posts until you bring politics into this. let it go brother. lol
did you read that story about Phil as well? I couldnt remember the guy’s name but I know for sure it was a high draft pick and the story about the car stuck with me to this day.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Q: How’s it going?
Russell: Going pretty good, as you could see
*********************************
LMAO!!!

It was Philyaw, 1976. Dumb as a rock. Asked to borrow Freddy B’s shoes. Freddy, size 11, Philyaw, 16, i believe.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
I don’t know what’s worse, Russell’s complete unwillingness to take responsibility for his own performance or his…incoherence.
Jerry, please don’t quote him verbatim. It’s too much.
I hate to be cruel, but I’d love to get a peek at a term paper he wrote at LSU.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Maybe Randy Hanson can talk some sense into him. JuBustus what kind of beer do you like? Oh….. you know….. uuuhhh bottles or cans.
Life is like a box of chocolates…..you never know what you going to get! unfortunately for the Raiders their box has had all those crappy soft centered candies that someone takes a bite out of ,or sticks their finger in and places back in the box. Stupid is what stupid does.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
I think we can win at least 3 of the 4 games remaining, or at least 2. That would be a good finish this year with 6 or 7 wins
If Gradkowski plays as he played the last 3 games he should be considered for next year.
We should be able to beat Cleveland. Denver, Washington and Baltimore are harder but no imposible to win, I think.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Will it be a sell-out??
Just kidding.
Think Bruce can get the gate over 40K??
December 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
So, DMAC, Al is NOT responsible for Russell being here? Is that what you’re saying? Because, according to your logic, any other owner would have taken him at number one, too? How do you know that? I recall reading several reports prior to that draft of teams eyeing Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson, two players that turned out to be much better than Russell. Al Davis had access to all of the information regarding these players. He knew that Russell really didn’t even have much college success to go on, and basically possessed little more than raw talent as far as any scouts could see. He knew that many scouts believed Peterson and Calvin Johnson would be able to play in the NFL. He had all of the film, all of the input. All of the information was in front of him. And, he chose the guy whose one skill is throwing a football 50 yards on his knees.
Also worth noting, Brady Quinn wasn’t drafted until 20 something, when a lot of people speculated that because he was a QB he’d go in the top 5. A lot of scouts also believed that Quinn was better than Russell. It’s very likely that if Al hadn’t have drafted Russell, he too would have slid down to the bottom of the first round, maybe the second.
So, cut the b.s. Al Davis is responsible for Russell being here, and there is little explanation for that circumstance other than Al having a perpetual hard on for quarterbacks that can throw the deep ball.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Good afternoon! May Gradakowski keep this guy off the field.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Wow Raider “fans”. . . . .
It really makes you feel good to keep kickin’ someone down huh?
Gives you a sense of empowerment that you otherwise lack in your lives perhaps?
Amazing.
I would think that as a Raider fan, you’re gonna hope that EVERY player on our roster will succeed.
You feel you’ve seen everything you need to see out of a 24 year old kid who’s played in 25 football games?
Wow.
Yeah, I bet all of you were at the peak of your maturity at the age of 24.
Nice people.

Silver-N-Smac,
It is nothing personal with Jamarcus, I really hope he does well with his money, and has a great life after career. It would be a nice ending to the story if he followed his flop in football with a passion for being a franchise owner of some restaurants or some successful business guy in the south. I would be all for it.
I would just like for him to embark on his next career starting December 10th, 2009.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
So guys, DMAC took a crack at it, and wiffed big time. Who’s next? Who can come up with a reason for Russell being a Raider other than Al Davis and his hard on for deep throwing quarterbacks?
December 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
I want JaMarcus to succeed, but tell him to stay away from microphones. He’s his own worst enemy.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Jghb,
Russell scored triple of Vince Young on the Wonderlic, so where does that leave anything? Character is the issue.
entitled is as entitled does.

Yeh, Captain. And Al Davis looks real sharp in front of a microphone these days. To be honest with you, considering Al’s dementia, which is on display every time he speaks anymore, Russell is far easier to understand.

First off, I agree with everything you said.
That’s not the point. Why do people feel the need to bash the guy with stupid nick names and rip him every chance he gets.
He already got the biggest slap in the face he could ever get – HE WAS BENCHED for the first time in his life.
So you got what you all wanted. Now tell me what harm does it possibly do to keep him around and give him the opportunity to realize that he made a big-time mistake and didn’t seize a great opportunity.
Why not give him the chance, as a back-up, to prove his worth again?
What do you people have against that?
You got some sort of death-wish for the guy that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?
Sorry man – people who get enjoyment out of bashing other people all the time are simply unhappy or insecure with their own lives, more often than not.
And “Primus” sucks?
Come on man!
Great band!!!
December 10th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
MaddenRaider, you are right that Al likes deep throwing QBs. I prefer a Kenny Stabler type QB, and the Raiders have a better winning percentage with that kind of QB. But when you have created an empire, pick the players, and sign the checks, you get to pick.

Wonderlic and 40 yard dash are the worst enemies the Raiders have
December 10th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I think Jamarcus became the Raider pick the night he and Brady Quinn went heads up in the Orange Bowl or whatever bowl game that was. I didn’t google it. When Brady looked average and jamarcus threw bombs all over the field. And there were some beautiful passes from Jamarcus that night.

Exactly, Captain. So Al Davis is responsible for Russell being here, right? Russell didn’t sign himself to the team, right? Russell is in fact another product of Al Davis’s demented idea of what works in today’s NFL, right? DMAC tried to say that Al can’t be blamed for this because anyone would have taken Russell with that number one pick, which is BS. In fact, I don’t know of any team that was certain to pick Russell if Davis didn’t. It’s likely Russell could have slid down lower than Quinn if we didn’t take him, possibly even to the second round. Anyhow, thank you for backing up my point. That Al Davis is responsible for Russell being in a Raider uniform.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
I think it’s obvious that the team and the coaches and the owner have had discusiions with Russell and jhe knows what they expect from him wether you guy’s hear what you want to hear or not. This was obviously a wakeup call for Russell. And as he says time will tell. I thin k you guy’s don’t like the kid so anything he says unless it’s word for word what you want to hear then he doesn’t get it.
That’s your opinion. what matters is that he does what the coaches and the owner want done. Not say what the fans want to hear and frankly I couldn’t care less what you guy’s think what I want to know is what does the coach think.
Becaus eit’s obvious that anything he says will be twisted and ridiculed by a bunch of naysayers and haters. On the other hand I’ll wait and see if he prepares well and and gets his mind right and ready to be a starter in this league. His wieght is waaaaay overblown and he’s far from being the dummy that y’all want him to be. So the proof will be in the qactions and how he plays.
I can’t see anywhee in here where he’s blaming the players he plays with. Whgat he said is true when he was in there plays were not being made. Murphy is a different player which I think is due to Chaz’s leadership. And JLH started out very well. Russell never played with those two. And the Oline got healthy which is huge.
I love the job theat Gradkowski is doing and I wnt him to stay as starter the rest of the season and give Russell the offseason to get ready. But I know this talent wise it isn’t close now it’s just a matter of Russell getting right and once he does it’s over……..period
Haters be damned!!! all of you!

The face of the franchise should know that part of his job is to shield his teammates from the critics. Even if it their fault he is there leader. It is his fault that they were not prepared.
Grad’s at least acting like a franchise QB. I think Russell is in for the shock of his life when he gets cut after refusing to renegotiate his contract.

The point is that if he has conceded that he was embarrassed and WANTS to be successful, then hell, give him a chance to do so.
I bet there are a few of you in here that have had serious personal problems in your life.
Wouldn’t it just suck if the rest of the world totally shut you out?

December 10th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
The fact is we had a 2-14 record in 2006 and we had the nº1 overall pick, where any team without a Franchise QB select a QB, and the choice was between JaMarcus and Quinn
JaMarcus is a bust at this point, but Quinn is a bust too.
There is only another QB from that year playing right now, Edwards in Buffalo and he is a backup too, they just benched him to play Fitzpatrick (a 7 round pick in 2005, now with his 3rd team in 5 years)
December 10th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Look at a lot of Al’s reach picks in the number one spot. They have all taken at least 4 years to show there promise. I believe Jamarcus deserves his 4th season whenever it comes. Meaning if Gradakowski is playing well next year and Jamarcus doesn’t see the field I would have no problem with that. Patience is warranted based on the fact that it took Janikowski, Asomouogh, Gallery, and Huff all 4 years of playing to warrant there picking.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Beside the point, Captain. The bottom line is that Russell is only a Raider because Al loves deep throwing quarterbacks. Al Davis is responsible for this mess, just as he is responsible for everything that is Raiders. That’s the burden you get to carry when you have total control. His loyalists can’t just credit him for the success then pass the blame for the team’s failures on to a quarterback who was never ready to start in this league to begin with. Russell is only here because of Al Davis. He didn’t break into team head quarters and give himself a contract. Many of you are acting as if he did. The media is always mocking Raider fans for being stupid. You guys are not helping that scenario right now.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Silver-N-Smac, all these suckers want him dumped because they don’t like him. What they don’t understand is that if we’re going to win big we need this kid to get right. All they ever talk about is his wieght because they’re too freakin’ dumb to understand that has little to do with what he’s was going through it was his comfort level with what was goimng on around him and his confidence.
Right now the difference bertween Grads and Russell is not that great in fact it’s quite insignificant it’s just a matter of confidence in your surroundings. And some trust.

MaddenRaider, I agree with you. Al wanted JaMarcus. And after watching JaMarcus play in college, I wanted him, too. Is he a bust? I don’t know yet. But he has one hell of an arm, and if we could get him a solid offensive line, he could be dangerous.

December 10th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Silver-n-Smac,
For what it’s worth, Raider fans have no reason to root against Russell. But his comments give you no reason to root for him.
Instead of praising Gradkowski’s performance, Russell makes it sound like the receivers have simply come through for the new guy.
Instead of admitting that he didn’t get the job done, he puts it on the rest of the offense: “So, the quarterback job, I say he looks for more help around from everybody because he can’t do it himself.”
The guy won’t say that he could have been better prepared — even though the coaches had to simplify things so he only looked at half the field on a given passing play.
His attitude, basically, stinks.
He says he’ll be a “totally different JaMarcus,” but won’t give an indication how he’ll improve his performance.
I don’t expect peak maturity at 24. But the guy has to be more mature than other 24-year-olds if he’s going to make it as a starting QB in the NFL. He has to be able to learn from his mistakes and give Raider Nation a reason to root for him.
He said: “When we look at film, it don’t be as bad as it seems on the field always.”
Would any quarterback of a winning team say that?

LIAR. That’s not what “every team” does. That’s what a few teams do, notably the Raiders. I challenge you to prove that statement, that “every team” takes the first quarterback on the board after a bad season, no matter how unproven that QB is. Stop lying. All that’s being proven on this comments section today is that Raider fans either don’t know what’s going on, or they lie to deflect blame from Al Davis. It’s something most people already know anyway. But why perpetuate the stereotype? Do the right thing and be honest for a change.

Not at all. From what I have read, there were many who believed JMAC was a can’t miss QB. Look, I’d like to see him with a better offensive line, another receiver and a FB too. I believe JMAC has the talent to be very good, how good? Get more talent around him and we will find out. The only pick I really did not like was DHB. That guy can’t catch. And who did JMAC have to throw too?

I wanted Russell to succeed. I disagree that weight is not an issue. It affects his performance in everyway. He is lacking in self pride and it shows. Don’t give me the excuse that he is only 24 yrs old. That is a man’s age. You have to want to be the best and do the things to make you the best. How can he stand in front of a mirror. He needs to talk to Charles Barkley about weight. Coming out of college, he was fatter than JR. But he wanted to be the best and he worked hard to physically transform himself. Until JaMarcus Russell does that tranformation, he is cheating his fans, teammates and himself!
December 10th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Uh oh, a 3rd one down. Sorry, Captian Black. There were many who might have believed that JMAC was a “can’t miss” QB (based on one season of college football, evidently. These “many” wouldn’t have happened to be Raider employees, would they? LOL), but there were also many that pointed out that Russell really didn’t show signs that he could compete at the NFL level. From what I recall, the Raiders were the only team almost certain to draft him. Russell and Quinn were both considered mediocre by most analysts. Quinn went twenty something. If the Raiders hadn’t drafted Russell first, he likely would have went as low. Sorry, but I’m still waiting for someone, who knows what’s going on and isn’t full of it, to give a better reason for Russell being there than Al’s hard on for deep throwing QBs.

He must have the Al Davis symptom
December 10th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Plus, almost all of those quarterbacks possessed more than one skill. Russell has one and one only, that he displayed at the college level and that Al knew of, throwing the deep ball. That’s it. Those other QBs could do more. They’d given indications that they could read defenses, coverage shells, make adjustments at the line of scrimmage, even at the college level. Russell had given no such indications, and the scouts and analysts were vocal about it, and therefore, Al Davis was fully informed on it. LOL. Comparing the Raiders drafting of Russell with the Colts drafting of Manning. I’ve seen it all here…
Again, you guys can hate Russell all you want to. But the only reason he is here, and I mean the only reason, is that Al Davis just loves deep throwing quarterbacks. That’s it. Russell being here is a reflection on Al’s ability to run a franchise. Whatever you say about Russell, you’re saying about Al, rather you know it or not.

Non-rocket-armed Bruce Gradkowski is the Raider starting quarterback.
Care to take a swing at that one? (Hint: according to your view all final decisions about all things Raider go through your one and only most hated man.)
December 10th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
JaMarcus is a slow, plodding QB. And that I believe has to do with his lack of experience and confidence. Grad is quicker and more decisive at this point. I believe if JaMarcus had more time to process what is occuring on the field, he will become a much more confident QB. Also, JaMarcus had only a TE to throw to who could catch. Also, JaMarcus throws a fastball, so his ball may be tougher to catch.

Give JaMarcus between 4-5 seconds like Stabler had to find an open receiver and he will hit him. And JaMarcus has the arm to do it from anywhere on the field. However, he is a work-in-progress.

December 10th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
JaMarcus throws a fast ball, hard to catch, especially if you had 2 rookie WRs starting
JaMarcus is rarely intercepted when throwing a fast ball, DBs dropped a lot of picks this past 2 years, the problem is when he throws curve balls or deep bombs, that when they pick him because he has no accuracy on that kind of throws
December 10th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Hey Silver,
you got me there bro. I was actually tired of Gannon after he signed his contract he wasnt the same player. Gannon was a good leader but he had a huge supporting cast in 02 to hide his weakness. In 03, he refused to run to get first downs and the Oline exposed his weaknesses. A good QB can carry his team. Gannon didnt when his supporting cast was not great.
I actually hope we can salvage JR’s career as well since the Raiders invested so much. However, if Grad turns out to be a winner then it’s a wash. At the end of the day, we all want the Raiders to win again…except some of the morons on here…so we dont care which QB gets us the win so long it is a win.
You’re right a lot of us would look at life different too if we were awarded 30 mil and praised as the chosen one. However, that doesnt mean we shouldnt be B slapped if we sound like JR.
December 10th, 2009 at 2:25 pm

As I recall, after his pro day 100% of the analysts came out of the facility with wet spots on the front of their pants claiming Russell’s workout was the best they had ever seen.
They just brought up a couple issues…possible lack of passion for the game and not being a “vocal” leader.
Turns out those are major issues when it comes to succeeding in the NFL as a QB.

Give JaMarcus between 4-5 seconds like Stabler had to find an open receiver and he will hit him. And JaMarcus has the arm to do it from anywhere on the field. However, he is a work-in-progress.

He is so slow dropping back that he needs more than that. The line was going back faster than he was.
December 10th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
D, maybe the o-line looks to be playing better because Grads can scramble out of trouble, unlike JMAC

Ok imagine you are a guy like Zach Miller, can you imagine looking at JR and actually commit to yourself that JR is going to lead you when he can’t even put a sentence together….
I can only imagine WTF JR be saying in the huddle….some of you guys on here should put up some imitation of JR in the huddle…
December 10th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
dont get me wrong. i feel, for now, that JRuss is the future of this franchise. But that won’t become reality until he wakes up and gets the respect from his team.
It’s all about chemistry.

Don’t tell JaMarcus or JerryMac:
CHICAGO (AP) – McDonald’s says it will begin selling a variety of breakfast items for $1 beginning in January.
A spokeswoman for the world’s largest hamburger chain says the five breakfast items will be available on the company’s popular Dollar Menu early next month. The dishes include a Sausage McMuffin, a sausage burrito, a sausage biscuit, a small coffee and a hash brown.

Bottom line with JaMonkie is he doesn’t care about his teammates or the team or winning. He cares about all the money he is making. Period! I personally wouldn’t hire him to be a janitor.

You have 40 + guys working their asses off all year and they look over and don’t see their QB working as hard as them, and then he comes out and plays like schyt and blames other guys (which there may be a grain of truth, but you just can’t do that)…human nature may take over and they may not lay their bodies on the line for the lazy turd.
Might not be right of them either, but I could see it happening.

The real reason why nobody has seen Nick Miller on the field this season isn’t because he is hurt. The truth is JaMonkie ate him with gallon of ranch dressing & hot sauce.

Seymour: Ex-teammates say “we could use you”
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 10, 2009 5:37 PM ET
Three months after the Patriots traded defensive lineman Richard Seymour to Oakland, Seymour says some of his former teammates tell him they’re feeling his absence in New England.
“I’ve received a lot of text messages lately from guys back there saying, ‘We could use you now,’” Seymour told the Boston Herald. “I’m sure they could, but so can Oakland. Over the years we won a lot in New England, but they can’t live off those Super Bowls. Most of the guys who won them are gone.”
In Seymour’s opinion, the Patriots have suffered as a franchise because coach Bill Belichick is so confident in his defensive schemes that he thinks he can just plug in any player.
“They wish it was that easy to replace me, but it’s not,” Seymour said. “You can’t just have great coaching and no talent. You’ve got to have both. Bill is an extremely smart coach. Extremely [smart] . . . but he thinks it’s his schemes all the time. He had players like ‘Hot Rod’ [Rodney Harrison], myself, Ty [Law], Willie [McGinest], [Tedy] Bruschi and [Mike] Vrabel in that system to make it look good.”
Although Seymour says the Patriots are struggling without him, he acknowledges that they’re a lot better than the Raiders. And yet he also says he’s happy to have moved on from New England.
“We all want to be on a winning team,” Seymour said. “I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t been frustrating at times, because I know we can win if we play a certain way and then we don’t. But at the end of the day I’m glad I’m of out there. I’m really refreshed. I’m in a good place, personally and physically. I’m in a place where they really value you.”
According to Seymour, Belichick didn’t value him enough — but other Patriots wish he were still their teammate.

good point!
he sure is cocky for a guy that has ZERO leadership skills & work ethic. bad accuracy, footwork and timing with the WR’s. terrible pocket awareness. throws at the WR’s feet, hanging them out to dry
show your committed to the Raiders JaWalrus. take a paycut! you got outplayed by Bruce friggin Gradkowski!
study film, hit the treadmill. Listen to Justin Tuck & Michael Strahan. Go to Subway “eat fresh!” schedule some time with the WR’s. find a vet mentor like McNabb or somebody

It’ nice to see that there is a hope for excitement in the last few games of the season with Grad. Also nice that there has been much less to complain about from the left tackle spot this year. Mario seems to be progressing nicely.
December 10th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Issue isn’t that anyone of us want to see JRuss fail or want to talk crap about him. None of us WANT to talk crap about him. We want him to do well, throw TDs, scramble for positive yards and lead the team to victory.
When you want your team to win so badly, week in and week out, and the person who is supposed to lead the team does not show the proper attitude to do so, it pisses you off. This guy took no responsibility for his poor play. He pointed the finger at his WR, said that now they ar makin plays and before they were not. PISSES ME OFF!
He won’t accept responsibility for being over-weight. And I don’t care what anyone says, weight has everything to do with performance. Priestjj…shut up! You have no idea what you are talking about. Over weight with poor mechanics. When your in shape it is easier to bend your knees to throw the ball. When you get lazy….which JRuss has shown in his mechanics, you throw inaccurate passes.
Bottom line is he needs to study, work out and come into camp at no more than 235. Know his play book and make EVEN THE EASY DUMP OFF PASSES! Gradkowski is doing well because he can throw a simple pass and lead with passion. Something that JRuss has yet to show.
December 10th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
JR should forward his paychecks to Bruce Almighty. Bruce has him beat on the field and off (total class guy). Hands-down a better QB and person. Should be an interesting off-season. All the best to Bruce, All the worst to JMR. May the best man win.
December 10th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Dang Infinite Raider….That’s brutal. JRuss is young. Unless you know both Grad and JRuss, who are you to say who the better person is? Gotta wish luck to both of them given they are both Raiders right?
December 10th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Q: Do you think it was deserved?
Russell: Well considering I had one of the lowest Quarterback ratings of any starting QB since Ryan Leaf, yes I would say it was deserved, I didn’t play well…at all.
Q: What is he (Gradkowski) doing well?
Russell: Being a leader, not pointing fingers, having great pocket presence pretty much all the things I wasn’t doing.
Q: Anything you want to accomplish in the offseason?
Russell: Work hard, that’s all the time. Usually I would show up around 11:00, 2 hours or so for lunch wrap up around 2:00 and the rest is all work.
December 10th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Can we please just CUT this fat turd right now. What a great Christmas gift for the Raider Nation that would be.
Gradkowski=Gannon 2.0
December 10th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Jamarcus has had the SAME team to work with that Grad. has had. Jamarcus can’t even hold Grads’ jockstrap.
Jamarcus doesn’t deserve a chance. His cocky attitude and refusal to accept responsibility should be enough reason to pile on this loser.
He doesn’t even try. People that at least try, and accept responsibility DESERVE ooportunity, but Jamarcus has had his chance. How many more chances does he deserve?
December 10th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
I’ve been hearing all this talk about how if Jamarcus had this, or Jamarcus had that, we’d see how good he could be. Well, explain why Bruce freaking Gradkowski can take THE SAME TEAM Jamarcus had, and do what Grads. has done? Explain that Jamarcus lovers. Better yet, why don’t YOU explain that to us Jamarcus?
Oh, YOU think you have been ‘pretty good’. What a pathetic joke Russell is.
Have fun with your big payday and you rusted out Escalades that’ll be sitting in your front yard for yrs. to come, and be sure to wear that ridiculous white fur coat on your way to get your mail in the morning at your shack in Alabama.

December 10th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Granted there were some throws that Gradkowski made down the stretch that should be attributed to players going op and getting the ball, so in that capacity Russell is correct. However if he wants to be the leader of this football team he can’t shirk responsibility like this. The fact that he blames his failures on players not making plays for him is just the tip of the iceberg on how selfish and naive this KID really is. He’s nowhere near being ready to LEAD an nfl football team. Not this year and not next year.
