No decision on Russell-Frye

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, December 14th, 2009 at 2:36 pm in Oakland Raiders.

With Bruce Gradkowski almost certainly out of Sunday’s game in Denver, coach Tom Cable said during his weekly press briefing he wanted to give the matter of whether to start JaMarcus Russell or Charlie Frye some more in-depth thought.

Expect Cable to make his call, after discussing it with Al Davis, on Wednesday.

Something Cable will have to take into consideration _ tight end Zach Miller sustained a concussion when he was hit near the end of the game by Rocky McIntosh. It was Miller’s second concussion of the season, the first coming Oct. 4 against Houston.

Given the league’s new guidelines on concussions and pressure to play it safe, Miller is no lock to play. Miller has been the only receiver Russell seems to trust. Russell threw nine of his 16 passes Sunday to tight ends.

More to come . . .

Totally agree with Raiderdogg on this one. Don’t care who the QB is, the other guys on the field need to be busting their asses! He is dead on about the CFL/UFL and other guys chomping at the bit instead of these quitters.

How about our Oline staying WITH #2 to work on their pass blocking skills. They are HARDLY ones to talk.

Agree Thec! Which is why I understand your leader of men takes when it comes to Jamarcus. Mario and his “you talking to me” act when Grads had to tell him to stop watching the replay on the big screen? LMFAO!

  16. Raiders Grief Counselor Albert Bigelow Paine Says:

Russel will never reach Ryan Leaf or Tony Mandarich status. Most likely, he will just fade away quietly. Those two, along with Bozworth, will always be remembered due to their douche bag personas.

  17. Raider75 Says:

Should sit Miller, Murphy, and Schilens

Let DHB, JLH, and McFadden play WR (Walker as back-up) with Fargas at RB

Hell, give Huff a shot at WR… Couldn’t do worse than DHB.

No sense risking injury to the few good offensive players we have.

  18. Thec07 Says:

You would think most if not all NFL players were stand up, as they are literally going to war…
Nope Most of them are probable train wrecks….

Grads led these men, they believed and trusted him.

    I wouldnt follow BRL…..

  20. DKnight007 Says:

Moves that should be made for this pathetic Raider franchise to be respectable again but won’t because Al Davis is stupid:

1A. Restructure down Russells contract or cut him since he is due an undeserved amount of money in an uncapped year next year and use that money to hire the guys in 1B below:

1B. Hire Holmgren as GM/Personnel Man and Hire Jon Gruden as Head Coach

    2. Hire Bruce Allen as the capologist

    3. Let Holmgeren and Gruden talk to their buddy Andy Reid in Philly about trading for Vick or Kolb to compete with Grads as the starting QB in 2010.

    4. If they get a top 6 pick in round 1, then try like heck to trade down! If they can’t trade down…and if they can’t draft Suh, then look to draft MLB Spikes, OT Campbell or DT McCoy.

    5. The draft should be focused on upgrading the O and D lines and LB corp.

If the looney old Al man makes all these moves that mentioned above then he actually might have a chance at seeing the team reach a Super Bowl within 3 years or before he dies.

If the stubborn delusional old man Al doesn’t make any of these hires and moves, then the team will continue to SUCK!!

It’s simple…..but to Al Davis it isn’t so simple….because he is a senile, stubborn egotistical old man, who only cares about himself!

    ^^^^^^
Answering someone elses previous question about needing Allen since there will be no cap in 2010.

The team will still need a competent man like Bruce Allen in charge of handling finances and contracts.

100% agree with sitting Miller, Murphy and Schilens. Play DHB & Watkins. I don’t know abot JLH, the little guy has been getting plastered over the middle the last couple of week. Why not play Gary Russell in the slot? Al thinks he’s fast enough to return punts, why not give him a shot at some deep routes?

  23. The Big Banana Says:

Russell was benched in the KC game because of his play on the field. Gradkowski was handed the reigns because of Russell’s failure, not his upside or accomplishments. Graddy started 4 games before his injury. Russell said he learned and has grown from his time on the bench. said he’ll be ready when his number is called. His number was called on Sunday and his play hadn’t changed one bit. He’s still on turd status imo. If Russell can be benched for Bruce, he can be benched for Charlie just the same. neither QB came in here with impressive credentials. they were basically just guys who were ok being backups that weren’t supposed to be talented enough to “push him” or compete for the starting job.

Tom Cable, start Frye against Dungver! give us a chance to win the game. don’t slap the players in the face again. they are playing for pride right now. no way we finish 8-8. just trying to avoid another season of double digit losses

OUr QB situation is so bad that we should really ignore it and focus on building the rest of the team. The chances of getting a QB to rectify this mess came and went with Jamarcus Russell.

We need to start facing the fact that we will NOT have an elite QB anytime soon and focus on building a dominating defense that can hold teams to 17 pts or less. We get a defense like that, we won’t have to worry about offense. We can just run the ball and dink and dunk to eat up some clock.

This is the way I see it. I was asked on this blog to refrain from talking bad about the players. I said OK, I wont say asnything dispariging about them. 46. LA to TheBay Says:

Deep within the bowels of the Legion of Doom (Oakland Raiders Headquarters – Alameda, CA), the Supreme Commander of the Silver & Black ponders the catastrophe that is the 2009 season.

In walks starting quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, joining Davis and Head Coach Tom Cable, who has a very sheepish look on his face.

    Gradkowski: Hey, Coach! Mr. Davis.

Cable: Hey, Bruce. Have a seat.

Al: Silence, fat boy! Hey, Bruce. Have a seat.

    Cable: How are you feeling?

Gradkowski: Great. Knee’s a bit sore but I’m ready to rock in Denver. Did I read in the paper that I have a torn MCL? That’s rich. Just a bruise really. Those media guys are really full of it, huh?

Al: You do have an MCL tear.

    Gradkowski: No, really it’s fine.

Davis pushes a button, and with the hiss of hydraulics, the bookshelf in his office slides open to reveal Assistant Executive John Herrera, wielding a Louisville Slugger.

Gradkowski: Hah, man I heard you guys were different here in Oakland, but man, this is rich. You guys crack me up. But seriously, coach, let’s talk about Denver. I’ve been noticing their over-pursuit. I think if we can buy some time, I can make some plays with my legs.

Al: You have an MCL tear.

Gradkowski: Mr. Davis, really, I’m good –

Herrera, a deranged look on his face, whacks Gradkowski’s knee with all his might. An audible crack echoes all around the facility, followed by the agonizing scream of young Bruce Gradkowski.

Al: Good work, John. After you check the wire taps, bring JaMarcus in here.

Herrera: Mr. Davis, it’s 3 o’clock, he’s at In N Out for his regularly scheduled “Double Dose of Double-Double.”

Al: Dammit, I thought that was at 1?!

Herrera: Um, yeah, 1 o’clock as well.

Al: Call him, will you? Tell him we have his marijuana cigars and white women waiting.

    Herrera: Yes, Mr. Davis.

Al: Also, call Amy. I want the results of the survey for the season ticket holders. I need a good laugh.

    Herrera: Yes, Mr. Davis.

As Davis, Herrera, and Cable walk out the office, they have to step over Gradkowski, who is lying on the floor, still moaning, racked with pain.

Al: Pick yourself up, will you? My god son, have some self respect.

    Cable: Sorry, kid.

    Later at the press conference….

Cable: We’ve spoken at length with JaMarcus, and he is reformed, rested and ready to go Sunday. He’s really got his head in the game, folks.

Reporter: Really? ‘Cause I just got a tweet from my cousin who works at In N Out, and apparently Russell has just set a record for most Double-Doubles consumed in the span of a minute, with thirty eight.

O-Line problems: SIMPLE solution, cut Russell, there is no o-line out there that will play hard and protect their QB if the QB has no pocket awareness, can’t read defenses and can’t get pass his first read on who to throw to… Russell is a sitting target, all he sees is his TE since it’s an easy read…

Jerry did mention the BS call with Randel El, but left off SEVERAL other calls that were equally if not WORSE non calls by the so called refs.
Oakland did plenty to shoot it self in the foot, but the refs were appauling.

You want great auccess right away and that is very improbable. The fans here are not nearly as sophisticated and knowledgable as we used to be. This generatiion of fans are insufferable. maybe. still gonna have to do something about Al’s 1983 defensive scheme. playing man 90% of the time is impossible, and it’s showing. there are better athletes playing in the NFL these days and al just doesn’t understand that. you have to give offenses different looks; blitz more often and play some zone. we can’t just line up 11 guys and dare teams to beat us
