Raiders await QB resolution

Share

As much as players attempted to deflect the idea that the loss of quarterback Bruce Gradkowski was an emotional downer in a 34-13 loss to Washington, at least one player was willing Monday to concede it had an impact.

“You could kind of see it emotionally a little bit, the wind left our sails, so to speak, just a little bit, when that happened,” defensive end Jay Richardson said. “But that’s part of the game. If a guy goes down, the next guy has to come in and step up, and the team has to rally around that guy.

“We could have done a better job of kind of rallying around the next guy coming up and giving him a boost.”

Gradkowski ruled himself out this week with torn left medial collateral ligament and a partially torn right medial collateral ligament, and with three games left in the season, it’s conceivable he is done for the season.

Running back Justin Fargas, who in recent weeks lauded Gradkowski’s command of the huddle and enthusiasm, said, “Well I think we were building something there but we can’t let the momentum or fire be killed by that we have to find a way to keep it going.”

Since coach Tom Cable declined to name a starter following the game and admitted there was some thought given to playing No. 3 quarterback Charlie Frye, Russell can’t be considered a slam-dunk choice to start against Denver until the words come out of the coaches mouth.

Cable, who meets with the press at 2 p.m. today (PST), said it was his his call to repalce Russell with Gradkowski, although you can logically assume Al Davis signed off on the decision.

The question is whether Cable would essentially bench Russell a second time, and if Davis would go along with that as well.

Stay tuned . . .

If Cable wasn’t under Davis’ thumb he would have already named Frye the starter for this week.

Run wildcat, and mix in a little bit of lechler, and jano, as QB….. Stay away from BRL

I could live with Troy Smith as part of a trio of QBs, including Gradkowski, competing for the starting job. A trio that doesn’t include JaBigMac. The only way JaBigMac should stay is if his current contract is ripped up and he’s brought back on a 1-2 year deal at the league minimum to be our No. 3 guy. Even then I’m not crazy about it. Bruce Almighty, Smith and Frye would be fine by me.

I can’t help but think about Kurt Warner bagging groceries and and driving to arena league games.
I’m sure that experience grounded his feet to the floor. Too bad JaMarcus never went through that experience. Never had any trial that he had to push through to succeed. He was pampered, and groomed for the pros because of the physical talent he showed.
Maybe he should walk back to Alabama at the end of the season. Gain some perspective and fortitude. Have a Forrest Gump moment.

This is the first game since week 2 that i thought we were going to win going into the game. What a downer

  • The Big Banana

Jerry. The title of your article should read “Cable awaits Davis’ QB decision”

  • Russell is the slowest QB in the league. I think he is only about 10 lbs heavier than Big Ben but Ben can move his butt around in that pocket. Russell has no pocket presence.

He should be filling out an application of admission to that Fat Farm at Duke University. That way he can get accepted early and begin the day after the Ravens game.

He may want to fly back with the Ravens and catch a cab from there to save some money. He may be needing every penny he can hold on to if he gets cut.

    Agreed Dogg!

The Oline should be ashamed of itself. And for Mario to come out with his “I guess we have to step it up if Jamarcus is back there” was something that should have NEVER come out of his mouth. How about stepping it up BEFORE Russell comes in so he doesn’t get our starting QB killed!

The Oline NEEDED Grads to cover up their glaring flaws. The begging for a mobile QB is just the last straw for me. Get some road graters like JB said. Get this punk ZBS shyt outta here!

  • DKnight007

Moves that should be made for this pathetic Raider franchise to be respectable again but won’t because Al Davis is stupid:

1A. Restructure down Russells contract or cut him since he is due an undeserved amount of money in an uncapped year next year and use that money to hire the guys in 1B below:

1B. Hire Holmgren as GM/Personnel Man and Hire Jon Gruden as Head Coach

    2. Hire Bruce Allen as the capologist

    3. Let Holmgeren and Gruden talk to their buddy Andy Reid in Philly about trading for Vick or Kolb to compete with Grads as the starting QB in 2010.

    4. If they get a top 6 pick in round 1, then try like heck to trade down! If they can’t trade down…and if they can’t draft Suh, then look to draft MLB Spikes, OT Campbell or DT McCoy.

    5. The draft should be focused on upgrading the O and D lines and LB corp.

If the looney old Al man makes all these moves that mentioned above then he actually might have a chance at seeing the team reach a Super Bowl within 3 years or before he dies.

If the stubborn delusional old man Al doesn’t make any of these hires and moves, then the team will continue to SUCK!!

It’s simple…..but to Al Davis it isn’t so simple….because he is a senile, stubborn egotistical old man, who only cares about himself!

It’s the mind set that some people have.
No matter how much money, talent or success they have, they’ll find a way to blow it.
Mike Tyson is a classic example.
AJ (Burnout) Burnett of the Yankees is another. The guy has a rocket for an arm, yet he’s a .500 pitcher.
I always imagine if a guy couldn’t throw or wasn’t athletic, would you want them near your team? Would you give them a job pumping gas?
If Burnett couldn’t throw, I could picture him smoking pot all day in an Arkansas trailer park.
His old team mate Roy Halladay would be a pilot like his father was.
There was a reason why Clay Matthews Jr was selected in the first round. Bloodlines and upbringing. And it’s starting to prove out.

  • jhill

I don’t see how a QB is supposed to see a guy that is coming from his BLIND side unblocked. Orakpo was on the QBs, even Grads, before anything coudl develop. It wasn’t even a 3 count. How many times did we sack Campbell yesterday? When Scott came in and blasted him from the back was anyone saying Campbell didn’t have any pocket awareness? The fact is, there was NO pocket at all yesterday and a slug like Russell had basically no chance. And with only Carter and Orakpo on the Dline and no blitzing, that was pretty pathetic!

  • In this link, you need to look at picture #16 of Jamarcus trying to throw the ball. There is nobody touching him and yet his mechanics are those of someone who might be retarded.

For all those who think the O-line is not good enough…
The Colts have had 10 years and 89 picks in the draft since they selected Peyton Manning.
They have chosen 0 linemen in the first round and only 2 in the second round.
Yet Manning is annually among the league leaders in fewest sacks allowed.
I guess it pays to know what you’re doing on the field.

    JaMarcus is completely useless.

  • Richochet

What was mentioned is oh so true..a “scrambling qb” or a “solid qb” covers up for a lot of oline mistakes.
Last year plays were called for the qb to scramble immediately to the right, knowing Kwame’s guy was going to get through (why he wasn’t benched is yet another subject) and yet still Kwame led the league in penalties, even with only 12 games.
Same with Grad..who reminds me of a Garcia type guy behind center…quick to get out of harm’s way.
Those nimble feet have bailed out many a lineman’s sorryass.
Cement toes Russell exposes those flaws, 10 fold.

Regardless, players should ALWAYS be thinking about their job..you would think. Knowing there is NOT a nimble qb back there should have every lineman stepping up their game, KNOWING their flaws will be exposed…wouldn’t you think?

    2. Hire Bruce Allen as the capologist

    ————————-
Just a question. Why would you need a capologist if there is no cap?

  • On a good note, Darren passed the “eye” test and may have broke more tackles yesterday than he has all year.

Of course after one nice beginning to a run, breaking a tackle on a toss, he slipped and fell. Than next play, losses 3 yards.

    Baby-steps I guess.

    JB,

Willie, I mean Troy’s height doesn’t concern me. It’s his body of work in the NFL. Are we supposed to Limo him in because he won the Heisman and had a better interview at the combine than JaMarcus?

JaMarcus is so bad that our standards for his replacement is (drumroll) Troy Smith?

I’ll take a guy who has many starts, studys like hell, has proven guys will listen and play hard for him, and has won games over tough teams with the chicken salad he has to play with.
    ***************

And who would that be? We’ve seen what a mediocre QB with heart, desire and mobility can do with the chicken salad. Almost anything is better than JR. But as much as I like Gradkowski over JaBustus, bad knees are not a good place to start circling the wagons around. Smith, IMO, is not damaged goods. He’s got everything Gradkowski brings to the table plus an upside. He’s had bench learning time in the NFL, some NFL playing time and seems to exhibit the skill sets necessary to be successful with what we have. I believe he’s available for the right price. we’ve already tried the FA veteran QB’s and those didn’t work out too well. I just think Smith give us our best chance. I’m open to listen to other options. I do however believe that Vick is not the answer. He’s just a RB disguised as a QB.

Wait and see on QB, never said Jamarcus was the QB.

Asked abbout lackluster play when jamarcus entered, emotional let down was the question, cable said didn’t notice it but may have occured.

I mean, do they really think “#2 was in at QB” is going to fly as to why they gave up all that pressure when they meet with their position coaches?

I mean, is “well Grads would’ve bailed me out” really an acceptable answer?

Russell didn’t even have time to make the bad throws we were all expecting, lol! The Oline gave Al another excuse to keep the guy around. I can just see the next PC from Al now, lol! “The ZBS was never a good fit for Russell. We didn’t do a good job of surrounding him with the proper ….”

Peyton Manning is a drop back style QB, without much pocket mobility. The difference is he has a brain that he can use, he studies the game, he takes the NFL and his job serious, unlike JaM0nkey, that is the difference between him and any other successful QB that has ever played in the NFL. JaM0nkey will NEVER have it. He had an opportunity yesterday to turn it around, to win his team back, to win his fans back, and to win his job back. ANY OTHER competitor would have CEASED that chance yesterday and would have WILLED a win. He didn’t, he can’t, and he never will. JaM0nkey just Ja Go Away. Worst 1st pick EVER in the history of the NFL.

You have 2 ways not to get sacked.
You can run around and buy time ( Garcia, McNabb, Roethlisberger),
    or
You can call out the proper blocking assignments, and know who to throw the ball to, and when ( the Mannings, Drew Brees, Rivers)
Standing still with a blank expression will get you killed ( Fill in the blank ________ ______???)
