Losman strikes it rich in Vegas
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 at 1:29 pm in Oakland Raiders.
It remains to be seen whether J.P. Losman can improve the decision-making process that led to 33 touchdown passes, 34 interceptions and a 10-23 record as a starting quarteback with the Buffalo Bills.
Based on the way Losman has navigated his professional career since being cut by the Bills after losing the starting job to Trent Edwards, he’s off to a good start.
First, it’s December and he’s not in Buffalo, which is always a good thing. The Bills are also-rans, replaced coach Dick Jauron with Perry Fewell, and Edwards was sent to the bench in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Losman is coming off a championship season with the Las Vegas Locomotives, a season for which, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he was paid nearly a million dollars.
Now he’s in Oakland, a former first-round draft pick in an organization with its quarterback position in flux, with a chance to make enough of an impression to be in the mix for a starting role in 2010.
“I’ve experienced a lot of things in this league, it’s a league where you can’t predict the next day, let alone the next year,” Losman said Wednesday before the Raiders practice session. “So I’m just taking it one day at a time right now, so I’m here for the short term, and after that, plans will be made.”
In the meantime, Losman is hitting the playbook and film room hard _ something he was always lauded for in Buffalo, where he was the 22nd pick in the first round of the 2004 draft. Former Bills quarterbacks coach Sam Wyche once compared Losman’s toughness to Jim Kelly and Brett Favre and his quick feet to Steve Young and Donovan McNabb.
Losman was a high school star in Venice, Ca, and heavily recruited. He went to hometown UCLA, only to transfer to Tulane, where he completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 6,754 yards, 60 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.
The Bills made him a starter in 2005, cutting 13-year veteran Drew Bledsoe. As the quarterback, Losman took most of the blame when they didn’t win, along with coach Mike Mularkey, who was fired following the 2006 season.
Criticized as reckless and unidsciplined in Buffalo, Losman attempted to smooth out his game under Jim Fassel, the former New York Giants coach who brought him to Las Vegas. He chose that option over being an NFL backup.
Fassel told Losman he was being too picky, worrying about the wrong things.
“He got me to smile, if that makes any sense,” Losman said. “You want to be perfect, just relax and go out there and have a good time. I know that’s an over-arcing theme, but from everything, our fundamentals, our footwork, we just calmed down in the pocket, and every movement was kind of just slower and under control.”
Losman said his role hasn’t been discussed.
“I just come here and try to learn the offense as fast as possible and whatever I’m thrown into I’ve go to be ready for,” Losman said.

I hope that JaMarcus will become a great player. I really hope that he does. Am I gonna get a star on my forehead if he does? NO. so enough with the “people who want to be right” crap. This isn’t 2nd grade.
I’ve said, repeatedly, that JaMarcus has been horrible this year, and that he should NOT be starting right now.
And I never “resorted” to calling people racist.

Negotiated by agents Eric Metz, Ethan Lock and Vance Malinovic, the contract carries a maximum value of $68 million, a league rookie record. There are $31.5 million in guarantees and an additional $3 million in 2010, provided Russell simply reaches minimum playing time benchmarks.
But the real strength of the contract, hammered out in four days of marathon face-to-face negotiations, lies in its attractive payout schedule.
Russell, 22, can earn $34.5 million over the first three seasons of the contract, an increase of about 65 percent over the $20.95 million Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams, the top overall selection in the 2006 draft, figures to bank in the first three years of his deal.

——–
Right, he’s already been paid $31.5 mill and to get out of the contract in a non-capped yr would be $3. mill. The $9.5 mil figure is if the money is counted in a cap year.

It is unfair to some of these players that we want them to perform right away, but the reality is they make too much money too soon and so the teams are forced to play the young guys…
But, rookies can’t complain too much when they are pocketing those huge signing bonuses before showing one sign on the field.
I am sure many young players have been lost because they were not given time to come into their own, but that is just the reality of 21st century football.
Hopefully that changes with the next CBA.

I realize that. But the reality of the situation doesn’t change the reality of human nature.
Young players are still young players, no matter how much you pay them. Whether or not they appreciate the money or if they’re cocky punks, it still doesn’t have anything to do with their development as football players.
Some players develop quickly.
Others take time.
I know it’s not the sexy thing to say to be patient.
But I can go on and on with examples of players who didn’t hit their stride until later in their careers.
JaMarcus may indeed turn out to be a bust.

Yeah, the Raiders were good prior to Free Agency, 20 years ago (1989) When players didn’t make any money, and had no alternatives to the team that drafted them. But this is the modern era.
Free Agency in the NFL started in 1989 with Plan B. It marked a new way of operation for NFL teams.
In the 20 Seasons since the implementation of Free Agency and the Modern Era, some teams have adjusted, some have not. The following is the number of winning seasons by team since 1989:
1. Pittsburg 15
2. Miami 14
3. Green Bay 14
4. New England 13
5. Philadelphia 13
6. San Francisco 12
7. Minnesota 12
8. Kansas City 12
9. Indianapolis 12
10. Denver 12
11. Dallas 12
12. Tennessee 11
13. New York Giants 10
14. Buffalo 9
15. Seattle 8
16. Tampa Bay 8
17. San Diego 8
18. New York Jets 8
19. Chicago 8
20. Washington 8
21. Oakland 6
22. Atlanta 6
23. New Orleans 6
24. St Louis 5
25. Detroit 5
26. Cleveland 4
27. Cincinnati 2
Jacksonville’s been in the League since 1995, 7 winning seasons.
Carolina been in the League since 1995, 4 winning seasons.
Baltimore’s been in the League since 1996, 6 winning seasons.
Houston’s been in the League since 2002, 0 winning seasons.

Exactly thats why you dont take “Projects” this day and age. Or something based on 40 time. Who would you rather have cushing, or DHB??????
22 WR’s have better numbers than DHB. that was just a dumb pick IMHO, why not take the best WR in the draft??
Or one of the other 22 who are better, could have taken Murphy in the first if you want to reach. thats my issue stop reaching for the fastest 40 time project usain bolt track guy, and get football players.
December 16th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Silver n Smac, back in the day, when salaries where not so high, teams could afford to sit draft picks on the beach for a while and bring them on slowly. but now with escalated salaries and short lives for coaches, there is more urgency to getting the high priced draft picks in sooner rather than later. Kenny stabler had darryl Lamonica and George Blanda to learn from also, not andrew walters.

Dakota & Jhill:
They were interviewing Lincoln Kennedy on KNBR about an hour ago, and he said in the 2000 Gruden era, that the Raiders only had about 10-11 offensive plays that they ran, over and over and over.
What was the trick? They had great players who could run those plays and those plays were in the system long enough for them to be 2nd nature to the players running them.
The only play that I can think of that this current Raider team runs with regular success is the tight end over the middle. This is my point about Cable and this roster: It’s a young roster that gets spoon-fed a new offense every single year.
Not until we stop that crap and let these guys get good at ONE system, will we ever succeed.
And yes Dakota – put Tom Cable on the Colts and I guarantee you they’d be deep into the playoffs every single year – with ultimately a championship.
Surround Jon Gruden & Tony Dungy with crappy players and you’ll get crappy “coaching”.

Stabler took 5 years because he came into the league with a so-so arm, left the team for a season after his rookie year, and had to move past Lamonica who threw one of the best deep balls in the history of either league. The Raider offense had to be re-vamped to take advantage of Stabler’s skill set – something Al signed off on only very grudgingly. For his part, Stabler devoted his off seasons to working out to strengthen his arm so he could throw the deep outs and comeback routes.
Branch came from Colorado where they primarily ran. He was VERY raw when he came into the league. Biletnikoff worked with him intensively to get him to stop trying to trap the ball against his body – something DHB tends to do as well.

‘enough with the “people who want to be right” crap. This isn’t 2nd grade.’ – What, exactly, about that statement makes it 2nd grade? Have you taken college level psychology or read any books on the human psyche? (I don’t mean that as an insult by the way). This is at the very core of most arguments. People that are unwilling to admit they were wrong. I admit I was wrong to get excited over Russell. I fell for it. Some folks are having a hard time with it and are, classically, in denial. And the deeper they go in defending him, the harder it is to turn back. That’s fact and applies with any argument/debate.
The white/black comment you quoted is clearly racist. And it’s not what I was referring to. I’ve seen people in here throw around the word “racist” out of convenience when clearly they are the ignorant or racist ones. If this doesn’t apply to you, then don’t feel compelled to respond to it. And if you only saw one person say something like that out of the many here that are disappointed with Russell, why keep mentioning it? I know why. You feel it helps your argument.

Also would like Al to consider Brian Schottenheimer, Jets OC, Kirk Ferentz, Iowa HC, or Mike Heimerdinger, Titans OC. (I know…yeah right to the first tow guys…but you never know…)

Big Bananna:
My wife’s a psychologist, so please spare me the “college psychology” inquisitions.
(By the way – she’s been trying to psychoanalyze my obsession with the Raiders for years – with no success!LOL)
Trust me dude – I only hope Russell turns out to be great because we invested a lot of resources in him.
Simple as that.
I think Cornell Green is a horrible right tackle.
You really think I want to be “right” about that?
Every statement I make is with the hope that it means success for the Raiders.
If I’m WRONG about JaMarcus and every other piece of blabber that comes out of my mouth, and the Raiders WIN, nobody on this site will be more happy than me.
Period.
And yes – you are right – for some people, it’s all about proving their points.
And that’s fine – whatver.
By the way – if you claim to know a little about the human psyche:
Explain me this: How on earth do “you” as a fan in the stadium feel your relentless “boos” are going to affect a 24 year old kid in a positive manner?
You (not you literally) really think a light switch is going to go on and he’ll suddenly play well?
Raider fans are great, but, they can sure be fickle as well.
A lot of these same “fans” were booing McCown in hopes of JaMarcus being thrust into the starting line-up.

Yes, and it wasn’t the Championship game my bad. We had 2 weeks to get ready for them in Oakland. They flew across the Country and held our potent Gruden offense to what 6 or 10 points?

Get it right man. The loss in that game had zero to do with Gruden’s offense or play calling. They lost because fat ass Tony Siragusa did a belly flop on Rich Gannon and the Raiders offense had to play against arguably one of the best defenses in the history of the NFL with a back up qb. Gannon returned to the game for a brief time but was ultimately replaced by that amazing QB Bobby Hoying! Did you honestly expect Bobby Hoying to pick apart the 2000 Raven’s defense? It was no easy task for an MVP caliber qb like Gannon, let alone a journeyman back up.
Like I said if you are going to act like you know something try and get it right. You talk smack, I talk facts.
The score was 16-3 btw.

Dakota – The sad part is that Al Davis can recognize that Payton and Whisenhunt are very good and he can bring him in but even though he sees the talent and values them enough to bring them in for a look, he decides against going with the greater talent. Pretty freakin sad.

Sometimes Al Davis sees the great coaches before other teams and its like the other teams jump at those guys right after Al Davis doesn’t sign them because they believe he can evaluate good coaches but why the hell doesn’t Al sign them if he can actually see the talent?

The way I heard it was that Payton was “advised” by his good friend Bill Parcells to pass on the Raiders job and stay on as OC of the Cowboys that year. Also I recall Wisenhunt removing himself from consideration as HC of the Raiders before he was even brought in.
Al has made plenty of poor decisions, but these two were actually out of his hands. Payton and Wisenhunt probably both realized how the situation was going to be, zero control or say in personnel or staff. That isn’t very tempting to many that desire to succeed.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) Charlie Frye will start at quarterback over former starter JaMarcus Russell when the Oakland Raiders visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Coach Tom Cable said Wednesday that Russell will be his No. 2 quarterback, with the newly signed J.P. Losman third.
Frye has not played at all this year and worked strictly with Oakland’s scout team.
“It will be good to get back out there with the offense and run some plays that aren’t on cards,” Frye joked. “I’ve got a lot of fire in me. I’ve been that crutch and that supportive guy all season, so now it’s my turn to be the fiery leader.”
The move raises serious questions about Russell, who started the first nine games of the season before being benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski before Oakland’s Nov. 22 home game against Cincinnati.
Gradkowski he missed the second half of Oakland’s loss to Washington last week with injuries to both knees.
What does Frye’s promotion mean to Russell, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2007 draft? “It means he continues to develop,” Cable said.
Russell passed for just 74 yards and failed to move the offense consistently while being booed by the crowd at the Oakland Coliseum.
Oakland signed free agent Losman, who is a former first-round pick of the Buffalo Bills and most recently led the Las Vegas Locomotives to the first United Football League championship.

Now whenever we go to an all inclusive resort we always get the Honeymoon Package!

Charlie Frye has a reputation for being a tireless worker and student.
Cable has in the past lauded Frye for his preparation and commitment. Not coincidentally, they were the same things Cable said about Gradkowski.
“Me and Bruce, we come from the same mold as far as our past and what we’ve done to get where we’re at,” Frye said.
Frye said he’s even been sitting in on game-planning meetings with coaches.
“I’m always prepared. That’s something about me is my work ethic is something I take pride in,” Frye said. “The coaches let me sit in a lot of the meetings as far as the game planning and write up ideas and things. I’ve been a big part of the game plans the last few weeks”

RaiderDogg, are you out of your mind? You think a senile old frog like Krappy is going to survive snorkling in open waters?
The old toad can barely operate a can opener without crapping his pants and breaking out in a cold sweat. Can you imagine him trying to get a snorkle in his mouth AND fins on his feet? For crying out loud, he’s not even potty trained!
The best we can hope for is Krappy’s wife sedated him on Rum Runners and he passed out for most of the day in their hotel bathroom.
It would at least save her the embarrasment of watching the 16 year old lifeguard rescue him from the jacuzzi every 20 minutes.

And explain to me why Cliff Branch didn’t become a good receiver until year #3.

Sorry silver n smac I know where you’re going with this but jamarcus will never reach stabler and those guys status after five years because all jamarcus cares about is money… he’s not willing to work hard at his craft and he’s an idiot. I don’t think he has the iq it takes to be a successful qb. I mean the guy can’t play in a 3 wr set for crying out loud and he’s been in the league for 3 yrs now.smh Add that to the fact that the fans, his teamates, his coach, himself, and even al davis have lost confidence in him… Jamarcus’s career is over ghe’ll never be what we thought he would be. He just better be glad he held out for all the money he could get because thats all he’s gonna get from here on out.lol Better start pawning some of the fur coats and diamond chains, becasuse your boy is through.lol

I thinnk paul will be able to do something with him because he has the brain capacity to take it all in. I here from bills fans the bills ruined him by trying to make him a pocket passer and he’s better on the move, well here in O town we love the scrambling qb. With the success bruce had I think thos two battle it out next year for #1.

Silver – I agree. Booing will not help and at this point I think the kid’s confidence is completely shot. At the same time, I think fans are just frustrated. If it weren’t for all these years of futility, there may be a little more patience. Also, if Russell carried himself better off the field, they may be a little more forgiving. Fur coats, bling, throwing teammates under the bus, lack of dedication. None of that helps his image.
Or maybe they would still boo. Quite possible. It’s the nature of the position too, though. You have to have thick skin. I personally think he was forced into the lineup a little too soon. But fans disagreed and even criticized Kiffin for “holding him back”. Fact is, he wasn’t ready. Still isn’t. And he has to face the music for it. He didn’t ask to be drafted #1 but he was and he even held out for top dollar. Have to man up and dedicate yourself to your craft.
December 16th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
KoolKell,
Baltimore isn’t the newer team , its Cleveland. The Browns kept the name, colors and history. But the owner, management and players moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens. After the move, the Ravens scrapped their history to appease Cleveland. The Ravens didn’t have a startup team as the Browns, Jaguars, Panthers and Texans had.

Banana,
Hopefully we did break JRuss down. Now its up to the coaching staff to build him back up. Obviously, he’s a big investment with enough talent to make him a producer in the NFL.
But it all comes down to Jruss’ moxy and if he’ll allow himself to be built back up.
December 16th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
The Bills made him a starter in 2005, cutting 13-year veteran Drew Brees. As the quarterback, Losman took most of the blame when they didn’t win, along with coach Mike Mularkey, who was fired following the 2006 season.

I dont see how Frye could POSSIBLY be worse than JR.I’m a diehard fan but all BS aside… he just aint got it. The day and age of grooming a NFL QB are out…until you get a rookie salary cap. No way someone like Russell(or any player for that matter) should get that kind of money until they have performed well enough to earn it.
