Why Allen wasn’t in town
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, December 17th, 2009 at 8:16 am in Oakland Raiders.
Guess we have a better idea at this point why Bruce Allen wasn’t at Ricky’s for a Raider Reunion hosted by Jon Gruden.
The Redskins hired Allen as their executive vice president and general manager Tuesday. Speculation on the Redskins next coach will begin immediately with Jon Gruden as the most likely candidate for obvious reasons.
Allen and Gruden have remained in touch. They played golf as recently as last week, with Rich Gannon and Derrick Brooks rounding out the foursome.
Since being fired by the Bucs, Allen has been traveling throughout the league, gathering information, waiting for his next opportunity. He sat with Jerry Jones in the box at Cowboys Stadium during a Monday night game.
The impression I got from talking to some of Gruden’s co-workers at ESPN Saturday night was that they believed he was on board for another year as a Monday night analyst. No one knows the terms of the contract of his extension with the network, although it’s hard to believe it doesn’t contain an “out” clause if he finds the right job.
The cynic in me thinks ESPN would be fine with Gruden leaving to be a head coach _ provided they get to break the story and get the best access.
Count on this _ Gruden will not make any statements relative to interest in a job when a coach is currently employed. So until Allen fires Jim Zorn, Gruden will say something along the lines of “Washington has a coach and I already have a job.”
Allen surfacing with Washington is no surprise. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder tried to sign Allen once before while he was the “senior assistant” for Al Davis in Oakland, sending a private jet to bring him to Washington for an interview.
Gruden was the Raiders coach at the time, and Allen opted to remain in Oakland.

Good Morning Smac!
I agree with most of what you say about the Raiders in that post.
I supported Cable coming back last offseason despite knowing Dakota was right. Continuity and all that, ya know? As recently as the Pittsburgh game I supported bringing Cable back as long as he brought on an Asst Head Coach/OC.
This weekend just left a bad taste in my mouth for a lot of reason that we’ve gone over already. At the end of the day, I really don’t care who, how, or why, I just want to win!

Smac,
This team has so many holes, IMO. It’s easy to point to the QB when we win or lose. As bad as Russell played this season, I STILL say I was surprised that Cable took him out of the KC game. The Jets game? Any other game, wouldn’t have been surprised at all.
But that was a beautiful dime that he dropped to DHB for a TD that was dropped. Came right back and dropped another dime to Murphy that was brought back b/c of a penalty. Had the team going in for another TD but there was a penalty that brought back a completion to Miller near the goal line, and Jano ends up missing the FG. Even at the end of that game with a QB change, we still could’ve won if Cable had called plays for Miller, Chaz, and Murphy instead of DHB, IMO.
I agree with you that the team won the game against Cincy. I said that it was stellar red zone defense, and great STs play. My point was that Cable and his offense has shown next to nothing with the exception of the 4th qtr of the Pittsburgh game.
Totally disagree on the Washington game. We dominated them? Take away the 2 pass plays to McFadden, and there was nothing else to talk about. Grads was getting HAMMERED all game with that Oline. Now had he had time to thorw, yeah I think it would have made a huge difference. But Cable put this Oline together, so it is what it is.
I just go back to I don’t believe that Al will get rid of the coach and the QB. One of them is going to go, and I just don’t think Cable is going to win out.

If we keep Cable, he should be retained as HC and FORCED to bring on a play caller so he can focus on managing the game. He wears WAY too many hats for a guy who is clearly learning on the job. I wouldn’t want to embarrass him by demoting him. That wouldn’t really be fair.

If I’m not mistaken…he has always been a Raider. Once a Raider always a Raider. I dont think he will mind, especially if it’s for good of the Raiders. He should understand. I agree with you in a way.
December 17th, 2009 at 8:57 am
It’s real simple, Russell. Hit the gym hard, hit the playbook and film room hard, come in early, leave late, and work on your timing with the receivers. Oh, and leave the fur coat and bling at home. This is football!
Until then, you will not get the fans support, nor do you deserve it!
December 17th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Gannon gets a lot of disrespect from Raider fans because of the awful, unpleasnat way those super bowl runs ended. WAY too many Raider fans don’t even count those years when they bish about how long things have sucked.
Have to remind them “What about the millenium teams making the play offs and super bowl?”
So many terrible endings over and over in a row, it tainted the whole thing.
Gannon was THE BEST QB in the League back then and THE LEADER of this team.
Some guys didn’t like him.
So what?
They respected him enough to elevate thier game to Super Bowl caliber performances didn’t they?
December 17th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Jhill,
Trust me – I felt bad for JaMarcus in that Chief game for all of the reasons you described. Cable even said the primary reason he pulled him is that he was basically tired of seeing him force the ball to receivers that were not open, when he had a check-down he could have gone to. But I agree – it was a strange time to pull him out.
Washington game – “dominant” was a poor choice of words by me. What I should have said is that I NEVER felt the Raiders were gonna lose that game. They were totally dominating the time of possession & looked in control, regardless of the heat Gradkowski was getting. We always had a semblance of poise. Nobody was panicking. We were sticking to the running game to help create the pass. Two, three yard gains were not causing panic. Plays were being set up for later. Washington had to respect the run. Everything was cool in that first half. A coach doesn’t go from steady to stupid in one-half of football.
I personally like Cable’s aggressive play-calling style. He gets a little too cute for himself at times, but, overall – I like it. I think he’s way more aggressive and imaginative with his play-calls than Gruden ever was. The difference? Gruden had great, veteran skill players with a dominant O-Line. It was all about dominating your one-on-one matchups and we did that. Cable has had nothing that even resembles what Gruden had to work with.
I’m not trying to compare the two. I’ve been a Raider fan since 1977 & I loved Tom Flores & John Madden (the little I saw of him). But Gruden was my favorite coach. I loved the guy. I loved his passion. His play-calling was a bit conservative in my opinion though.
Don’t you think it’s only fair to see what Cable can do with something that resembles good QB play for a sustained period of time? How can we even judge this guy, given the fact that the majority of his tenure was defined by a young QB who clearly is not ready to play consistently well?
And no – I wouldn’t be surprised if both he and JaMarcus are gone. Nothing that Al does really surprises me much. I tend to think he’ll be more patient with JaMarcus.
I’m just saying that if Cable gets the axe, he didn’t have the opportunity to play with a full hand of cards. And that’s a shame.
December 17th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Nnamdi21… my memory of that fateful game 8 years ago is a little funny but I know the hit occurred inside our own 30 yd line and Im pretty sure Gannon was trying to get extra yardage for a first down and choose not to slide.
You may be right though… I have no way to refute what you are saying.

Fat azz sucks life right out of the team as soon as he hits the field. Next year should be open competition between Grads, Frye, Losman & whatever vet they can bring in. So long JaMon*ie. Good luck finding a job in the NFL with that attitude & work ethic. Thanks so much for polluting the organization.

December 17th, 2009 at 9:19 am
Well,
I suppose I’m going to give myself the award for “Al Davis Ass-Kisser”.
Because according to RichoCrap – that is what I am.
It’s all good – I’m glad to kiss Al’s ass (well, on second thought – not really).
But since RichoCrap loves to repeatedly claim that the only reason I root for the Raiders is my “love for Al”, let me jump in and give you my version of reality, as opposed to RichoCrap’s:
What I said is that as a 7-year-old kid, I loved those uniforms, I loved some of those freaky lookin’ dudes in those uniforms. And there was somethin’ cool about that dude in the white suit roaming the sidelines. And as I got older, I loved that “renegade” image. And that image (yeah whatever Richo – I’m an “image” fan) is what was so different about the Raiders than every other sports franchise.
In this day and age of everyone and everything being so “by-the-book” and “politically correct”, I think it’s refreshing that the Raiders are more like the “mafia” of football. I think that’s entertaining as hell.
The losing sucks. Al has let us down big time over the past 7 years. And that sucks. But we’ll be back, as he loves to say. And I believe that he’s right.
And RichoCrap – what I said is that when the day comes that Al Davis is no longer with us, the Raiders will no longer be interesting in that regard. They will simply be another of the indistinguishable 32 teams.
Does that mean I stop rooting for the Raiders? No – you ignorant pile of dog doo doo. I love the Raiders and always will.
And I also think they’re a lot more interesting with Al around. He needs to surround himself with quality people. That much we all know.
But do I want him to disappear? Hell no!
So there ya have it –
Award to “Biggest Al Davis Ass-Kisser” goes to. . . . . .
ME!
If it must be. . . . .So be it!

Man don’t you just love this time of year. Listening to how other teams are trying to improve, getting new GMs, Coaches, hope, for Christmas. What do we get for Christmas? The same old stinking garbage that all of the botom dwellers of this league get!!!!
Now we are cheering for another QB talking like he is the next Joe Montana who got cut from team to team. We get reused left over broken toys for Christmas.
I guess you guys think Frye was probowl material for the Browns? He can hang out all he wants with the coaches in the gym, fall asleep watching film in the middle of the night, he was terrible for the Browns!!! Interception after interception why do you think he was a third round QB? Russel is not the answer right now but if you think this guy is get ready to receive a lump of $#!T in your stocking!
This use to be my team, now it is a broken team with Scrooge Davis running the show. The Raiders suck now!

These guys are spineless man. They are made up of the stuff the old Raiders were not. Now they do have some lame play calling and mana to man D is full of bravado that kills us in this league. But this team has no heart in the trenches. Look at the blocking, look at the worse tacklers in the NFL. They don’t attack and wrap up anyone man.
Bottom line they get big pay checks- Don’t make plays and blow to many plays.

As much as Al screwjobbed Marcus Allen… was he really wrong in letting him go? First off, does Al even have a daughter?
Second, has anyone else heard this before?
Or is simply more Koolaid?
December 17th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Smac,
The same way you say Cable should get a shot with a decent QB, some would say let’s see what Russell can do with a real Oline and some WRs who can catch the ball.
No matter what angle we take, we can make excuses for any of them. DHB couldn’t catch because of Russell, MLB can’t make plays because of the DTs, The corners can’t make a play because of the pass rush, the RBs can’t ….
Yada yada yada ….
Like I said, I don’t really care about the who’s how’s and why’s any more. It’s really draining man. Just get someone in here who can put something together. Rooting for a .500 season is not cutting it!

Gradkowski inclined to resign with the Raiders
Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski was the first player signed by the Raiders last offseason. If all goes well, he might hold that distinction two years running.
Gradkowski is in the final weeks of the one-year, $535,000 contract he signed in February. He figures to command a much sweeter deal from the Raiders or another team in need of a veteran quarterback.
For now, Gradkowski said he’s inclined to re-sign with the Raiders, the team that gave him a chance to resurrect his NFL career after three teams — Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Cleveland — ditched him within a year’s span.
“I love the idea of the Silver and Black,” Gradkowski said Wednesday. “We’ve got a great coaching staff and, definitely, great players that can put a run together. And I’m not just talking about an OK season, I’m talking about playoff time, making a run at playoffs. That’s in my mind, that’s in my future, I’d love to be here to do that.”
Gradkowski got his chance when JaMarcus Russell faltered in nine starts. The Raiders won two of three games under Gradkowski before he suffered two knee injuries against the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
The contracts of Charlie Frye and J.P. Losman, Oakland’s other two quarterbacks, also expire at season’s end. Russell has a prohibitive contract that makes him a potential salary-cap casualty.
Losman signed with the Raiders on Tuesday and practiced Wednesday. “It’s a great learning
experience for me,” Losman said. “I put myself right in there. It’s like an ultimate cram session. I get to come in here and see how much I can learn and how fast I can learn. I know this organization is looking to get a ‘W’ any which way it can, and if it happens to fall where I actually have to go in and provide that service, I want to come through for them.”

Don’t mean to take it out on you dude I guess I am still here blogging on a Raider’s Blog. I loved the uniforms to and I thought the players were awsome. I just hate to see this team now. Year after year I look for the next great and I am disappointed.
I have three daughters and they even watch the games and can tell this team sucks! They say, “Dad how can this be your team,? They can’t play.”

I’m not living in the past dude.
Damn right I deserve a better team.
It’s Al’s job to give me that.
If you say he is no longer cable of doing that, well – you have the better argument than me.
But as he’s done before, I think he’ll get this mess (that he created) turned around.
Wishful thinking by me? Too much Koolaid drinking by me?
Maybe-
We’ll see.
December 17th, 2009 at 9:33 am
I agree with Nnamdi in that I just don’t see why the players haven’t cornered Russell and beat his mutha fuggin’ arse! If all that this rumor shyt is true, WTF is going on in the locker room? I mean, if Terdell Sands can slap the shyt outta Lechler for whatever reason, where’s the back hand to Russell? Or how about trying his arse up to the goal post and tar and feathering him?
Do the players REALLY care?

You’ve gotta believe the Washington job is Gruden’s if he wants it. Although, Snyder is the one really calling the shots down there so if he prefers Shanahan or someone that would be the one caveat.

Bo is greatest athlete ever or at least since Thorpe but Marcus Allen could do it all best hands ever best goal line rb ever guy just had it all no weakness just got bigger than Al but pretty amazing Bo never even went to any training camps and was that good.

I’m not sugar-coating that.
But it’s too simple to blame one person or one philosophy.

But, as I’ve said – we’re really young. Most Raider teams of the past were not young at all.
So, our only hope is that these youngsters pan out.
Sure, it’s a big “if”.

To be honest Smac,
The first thing I would like to hear is we have signed a GM. Not that Cable has been fired, or Russell has been cut. The FIRST thing I want to hear is that we are looking for, or have signed a GM.
Outside of that, flip a coin as to who gets cut between Cable and Russell. I really don’t think it’s going to matter if we don’t get some sort of direction and solid philosophy from a GM. Even if the plan doesn’t work, it would be nice to see some type of plan implemented for 3-5 years.

I loved watching Bo Jackson play ball man. I loved the Raiders watching Bo Jackson in that silver in black I was in love with the Riaders.
When he went down to the Bengal’s I cursed them, the tigers, tony the tiger, and any other bengal tiger out there.
Bo at the time was better then Marcus Allen but he could catch out of the backfield, throw half back passes and still run for first downs. They were a great change up but Bo was better as Marcus got older.
Al was a “dick”for not keeping him around to give Bo a breather and get him plays. Steve Smith was a great lead blocker as well.

Before we bring Grads back, we need to figure out if we are going to be a WCO team or something different. Frye and Losman are not WCO QBs, and Grads is. If Hackett and Cable come back, Grads would make sense. If Fassell or a Gilbride type come in, it will be Losman and Russell.
December 17th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Jhill –
I totally agree – A GM is this team’s biggest need.
Al needs a guy who can say to him:
“O.K. Al – you wanna sign Javon Walker – fine. But you don’t need to pay him $50 million. We can probably get him for $3 million and a bunch of clauses”.
“You think Tommy Kelly is an up-and-coming tackle? That’s cool- fine – but we don’t need to pay him $30 million. Barely anyone knows this kid. We can re-sign him for $10 million.”
Shiot like that.
Al just needs a sounding board.
“Good idea Al, but, let’s do it this way”.
“Bad idea Al – I wouldn’t do that if I were you”.
etc.
etc.

Silver n Smac,
I don’t know that we suck. I think it really can be all about one player — if and only if that one player is your starting QB.
This is the guy who’s directing the offense on the field, calling audibles, has his hands on the ball every single down, has to be a highly skilled passer for the offense to put up points. It’s not just the most important player on the field, it’s the most important member of an organization.
Many teams experience dramatic turnarounds when they switch QBs. Look at how bad the Patriots were up until the game Tom Brady took over. That’s just one, extreme example but there have been many other turnarounds due to a simple upgrade at QB.
I believe going from really bad play at the QB position (JaMarcus and pretty much everything else we’ve had since Gannon) to a good QB can — not necessarily will, but can — turn a 5-11 team into an 11-5 team.

Chris –
You’re absolutely right – and we’ve already seen example of your point, when Gradkowski took over. The entire team started to play with more spirit.
But, the latter statement is what troubles me. Even though it’s partly human nature to get down when JaMarcus is in the game, it’s unacceptable. The fact that this entire team shut it down in the 2nd half of the Redskins game, before he even took his first snap is utterly unacceptable.
That speaks volumes about the fragile character of this current line-up. When I say we suck – it’s not that we don’t have talent on this team. However, much of that talent is based on youth & “potential”. And the offensive line is simply below-average at best. The left side is stellar. The middle is mediocre and the right side is simply atrocious.
Until the O-Line is seriously upgraded, even Gradkowski will not succeed with regular success.
The defense has been lacking at least one legitimate, nasty, run-stuffing middle linebacker or nose tackle, for years and years.
On both sides of the ball, this team needs at least one player that spits fire out of his mouth when he talks. They need that one guy who is willing to kick anyone’s ass who isn’t performing or putting out 100% effort on every play.
In other words, until both sides of the ball have a “coach on the field”, we won’t be ready to take that next step. Losing is too deeply imbedded in this team right now.
And this is coming from about the most optimistic fan you will ever find.

What would we all do, if some guy at our job made our work harder and more unproductive, got paid way more than us, and didn’t give a crap and was lazy?
Given the chance we would give him a taste of his own medicine right?
This is why Russell is toxic, and must go. He sold his teammates down the river, and they cleary didn’t forget about it. Can you start with a clean slate, I’m not sure

Because of the culture Al has promoted over the years. Your post 137.

December 17th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Smac,
But I really don’t feel that the players quit on the Oline, they just are not very good. It sure didn’t look like Cornell Green wasn’t trying on that last sack. Henderson was sure reaching and grabbing at Orakpo when he was going right around him. That whiff by Satele was just a flat out misread by him.
Grads and his mobility was simply able to cover than up by simply throwing the ball earlier which wasn’t really effective. Well I guess it was in terms of not taking sacks, but I look at that play to Murphy for instance. Yeah, it was a tough call on the replay review, but how about the line giving Grads one more second to throw the ball. Same with the play Grads got injured on, how about some time to complete a dumpoff to a WR.
We all know a 6′6″ 260 lb guy is not going to be able to drop back and avoid that pressure. It should have never been on display.
December 17th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Jhill,
But he makes their job harder!! Nobobdy likes that, and he gets paid more. I’m sure some of these guys are jealous, his weeky paycheck is close to what Bruce and Frye will get for the year, and those two guys work harder.
It doesn’t go unnoticed, and to be a professional you overcome it, and overlook it. If we were 8-5, maybe they overlook it, but at 4-9, they are like screw it and screw him. Or at least that’s what it seemed like during the game.
The team doesn’t support him 100%, and vice versa. Very bad situation.

Check it Stopwatch, RB is wearing #27, not #28. In fact, right at the beginning of the clip, the play-by-play says, “Redmond deep.”
December 17th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Vegas,
Handle it in the locker room, not on the field. Cornell Green is on record as someone who is willing to commit felonious assault, lol! Green, Henderson, Morris, and whoever else feels they make his job harder have 6 days of one on one time with him, and they all know where he lives. If you really have a problem, address it head on!
December 17th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Jhill….as you know #2 is a grown man at 24.Who in the world is telling Grads or Frye to do all the “EXTRA” they do.No One thats who.
Why should they treat #2 differently.
#2 is a grown man and does his own thing whatever it is
Grads ia a grown man and does his thing and we know what it is.
Frye is a grown man and does his thing and we know what it is….
It is what it is =)

December 17th, 2009 at 11:08 am
4eva,
That’s not the point. I don’t care what team we are talking about, or which QB, going to coaches meeting, game plannng sessions, or all these “extra” things we talk about seem to me like they should be part of a JOB description. QB of an NFL team IS a job, right? It should be as simple as if someone isn’t doing their JOB, then then they don’t play or get paid.

December 17th, 2009 at 11:10 am
They are grown-ups JHill, and very busy themselves. They can’t watch #2 all day everyday, and baby-sit him. We don’t know what is going on behind the scenes, but on the field we say it and than heard from the coaches and players afterwards.
And of course, Jamarcus was one of the first out of the locker room, leaving his teammates to answer questions for him, AGAIN.
That’s why the QB position is so vital. A leader will get the most from his players.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:11 am
And to Dakota’s point, there is no one above Cable who is holding Cable accountable for making sure stuff like that doesn’t happen.

December 17th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Jhill – point well taken about the O-Line, but, it sure is fishy when Henderson gives up about 2 sacks all year, and then gives up 4 in one game (3 were in the second half weren’t they?) I can’t recall.
And Henderson’s comments after the game were kind of a cop-out when he says “I wouldn’t change anything”.
He’s basically saying it was all Russell’s fault.
Yeah, Russell was miserable but you had a lot to do with that as well.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Henderson just giving it back to Russell who never accepts blame so deal with it even the players hate Russell .
December 17th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Very true.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Vegas,
We are just going to disagree on this one. There is no way you are going to get me to say I understand where guys are coming from who quit on the field.
If your theory is true, then I simply say why not address in practice weeks 1-8? Why not let him get killed in practice to send the message to the coaches and owner. To do it in front of the fans? It’s not like the fans needed convincing.
But like I said, I don’t think they quit, I just think Mario Henderson got beat like a drum on a couple of plays, and Satele on another. Grads would have been sacked on those same 3 plays. Maybe not the other 3 sacks, but certainly the early ones I saw that killed our drive to the 28 yd line … TWICE!
And you don’t have to keep remindin me of your disdain for #2, lol. You know I was right there with you on the change to Bruce.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Russell’s lack of accountability at age 24, Pales to Al Davis’ lack of accountability at age 80!

But, the latter statement is what troubles me. Even though it’s partly human nature to get down when JaMarcus is in the game, it’s unacceptable. The fact that this entire team shut it down in the 2nd half of the Redskins game, before he even took his first snap is utterly unacceptable.
RICHOCHET: oh shut up, lol…geez..you’re like a massive whinefest that never stops.
Seriously..does anyone on this board come even close to you for making sorryass excuses?
No..none..not even close.
The team DIDN’T SHUT DOWN as soon as JR came on the field, you moron.
Grad got sacked twice prior to JaWaaaadle going in.
Also came close to getting sacked a few times, getting rid of the ball, or scrambling out of reach.
FATASS didn’t do that. He went down, over and over and over and over.
Being dejected doesn’t mean the team gave up.
Yeah, the WHOLE STADIUM AND THE WHOLE COUNTRY KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.
See, moron, since game one..JR WAS AN EASY TARGET, AND VERY IMMOBILE.
The fact he was exactly that same way when he went back in surprised no one.
Only difference is worm’s like you, who stupidly rushed to defend everything about him, are now on backtrack like a slapped on little girl mode, STILL MAKING EXCUSES FOR HIS SORRY PLAY.
Coincidentially, JR STILL DOES THE SAME THING..not on him..oh hell no..not HIS FAULT..nope.. everyone is at task, NOT JR.
Asked if he was concerned about his “work habits” or “conditioning during the offseason” he stated “No, not at all.”
Guy has an excuse for every failure, just as you do.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
And this is coming from about the most optimistic fan you will ever find.
RICHOCHET: WHAT?? wtf? optimistic? who are you trying to kid? Making excuses doesn’t mean you’re optimistic. Means you don’t have the balls to state when you’re wrong.
Bad news for ya…Al is currently on record for having THREE CONSECUTIVE DRAFT PICKS, ALL IN THE TOP TEN, WHO ARE BEING VIEWED AS BUSTS, OR VERY LIKELY BUSTS…and that’s all….on…..Al.
Let me guess?
Bey is going to be a stud once he actually..uh..”practices” catching the ball?
Russell is going to “come back with a new attitude”?

some posts back JHill referenced JRuss’ size and his inability to get out of harm’s way.
It ain’t the size, it’s the desire.
Roethlisberger is about the same size and he fights (his o-line is no collection of supreme beings as you read the sack stats) to keep a play alive.
Air McNair was a very large QB and he’d struggle all he could to get it done.
As far as slow afoot, I doubt Tom Brady could outrun his grandmother in a fifteen yard dash, nor could Peyton.
These QBs just want it. Something missing in the JRuss psyche.

Now can we finally end this gruden for president crap, he is not coming back. There are quality guys that fit the Davis mold available. Top choice, Tom Rathman hc, Marc Trestman oc, or vice versa. Rathman is tough with jewlery, he will command the attention in the locker room, trestman is a the offensive guru, that favors a passing offense that can score from any where on the field, Davis loves that. Both would be first time nfl head coaches, another davis favorite. Rathman and trestman know each other well, and rathman played a very high level in almost the exact system trestman teaches, he can teach the young guys how to get it done. Both of these guys have coached with great coaches, and rathman also played for great coachs. This is gruden x 2.

DMAC, not true. Petrino turned down huge money. No real coach will come here unless they’re guaranteed control and, especially since the Kiffin fiasco, are also guaranteed their money. Al defines “cause” as not abiding to Raider tradition, or something like that. No real NFL HC is coming here under those circumstances, for any amount of money, because they likely won’t see their money anyway. Al already stiffed Shannahan and Kiffin. DMac, only if Harbaugh is guaranteed control, and given the money up front. There’s no other way he’s coming here. Nobody out there just wants to work for Al Davis and be a Raider, as so many in here naively believe. This is a business, and the Raiders have sucked forever. This is no longer a desirable place to work.

1. Russell
2. DHB
3. Poor O-line play
4. Points per game
5. W-L record
6. Punching employees
7. Punching his wife
8. McFadden

PFT is still claiming Washington’s #1 Candidate is Shanahan
Source: Shanahan next on the Redskins’ wish list
Posted by Mike Florio on December 17, 2009 1:04 PM ET
With the Washington Redskins successfully making a mockery of the Rooney Rule by announcing via e-mail the hiring of General Manager Bruce Allen exactly 114 minutes after announcing via e-mail that the job had become vacant, there’s another fairly significant step in this remaking of the franchise.
Per a league source with knowledge of the current dynamics of the organization, former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has been targeted by the Redskins as the next head coach.
And even though Allen currently is getting the press, the guy who’ll be running the show is Shanahan.
The Redskins quietly have been pursuing Shanahan for months. Reports emerged earlier in the season that Shanahan twice rejected offers to become the team’s new coach. The thinking was that Shanahan wanted to survey other possible vacancies before making a commitment.
And while he has made no commitment to the Redskins, we’re told that the resignation of Cerrato and the hiring of Allen is the first tangible step in the process.
So even though Allen and Shanahan have no history of collaboration and despite more obvious ties between Allen and former Bucs and Raiders coach Jon Gruden, the source predicts very confidently that coach Jim Zorn eventually will quit or be fired — and that Shanahan will get the job.
The only remaining question is whether the announcements will be made 114 minutes apart.

Makes you think. If Frye and Grads are in the film room making notes, why are the coaches not telling JaMarcus to sit down with them.
——————————————————-
I just don’t understand why things like this are not mandatory. Or to put it another way, part of the job description. And if they are mandatory and Russell just blew them off, then shame on the coaching staff for not benching him, or anyone else who misses meetings or dozes off, the SECOND it happened!
=============================
But isn’t this the problem, in a nutshell?
IMO, two people share equally for the demise of the Raiders in ‘09 (ok, 3 in you include Al, but we’ll leave him out in that he’s a given).
Russell and Cable.
Russell because the one guy who touches the ball 100% of the time the offense is on the field failed miserably, and “as the qb goes, the team goes”..and Cable for the above, along with so much more.
There are what? 15 or so “coaches” on the team?
ONE GUY’s job is to make sure those other 14 do their job, and to set the tone for the 53 players.
Cable USED THE MEDIA to state that JR wasn’t doing what he should be doing..yet JR acted all surprised, and in denial about what was going on.
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?
How is it the guy’s allowed to show up last? And leave early? HOW IS IT NO ONE GOT IN HIS FACE AND TOLD HIM HE WAS NOT ONLY FAILING in his own growth, but that his lack of effort was failing THE TEAM??
Jhill’s right..he should have been warned, fined, benched, given extra laps..SOMETHING that would give Jfatass the idea he’s not all that..but nothing was done..AND THAT’S ON CABLE.
Hell..I guarantee you that most of the HC’s, having their #1 pick show up, fat, and out of shape, would have had them running laps EVERY DAY AFTER PRACTICE..every single day..Cable not only didn’t do that, but allowed Russell to “walk between stations” instead of run…and to leave early when he so choose, which appears to have been most days.
Cable AND JR need to go..and I suspect it will happen.

Mr. Davis has some wierd science type logic. He needs to take 100% resposibilty for this debacle….
December 17th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
This coaching staff has had very solid success in other NFL franchises and is opertating at a huge talent disadvantage.
Based upon the logic I see on this blog Tomlin should be fired and Big Ben should be released.
Hint: (Pittsburgh is losing their games at the line of scrimmage). Same coaches, same scheme, same QB, same recievers much less Offense.
We will keep the same coaches and get rid of the remaining poor VALUE players on this team or renegotiate their contracts realtive to their production.
Kelly,Warren,JR and Walker and the remaining deadwood.
Anyone who thinks our Oline is good enough to compete does not understand football.
Grad is out because of poor protection.
Big Ben and Brady are underperforming because of poor protection.
Without the threat of a run the above QB’s have also suffered because their offense have become one dimensional.
The acquisition of Seymour is the first step of a line overhaul on offense and defense.
Stop wasting time on coaching changes.
Football is all blocking and tackling. Without it speed, schemes and skill are useless.

Always the same two requirements.
1. Are you a former head coach, dismissed and forgotten, who wants another shot, while making it perfectly clear you’re a token head? Apply within.
2. Are you an unproven assistant who wants his shot in the NFL, who agrees, at least initially, that Al is in charge, makes all the calls, hires all the assts, and can/will overrule any decision, at any time, for no reason at all? Apply within.

The one major strike against Hackett though, is the fact that he couldn’t get through to Russell.

Players do it with coaches all the time, this just happens to be player-to-player.

The bidwells are have a long standing reputation, generations deep as the worst owners in all of professional sports, yet they found a coach, and he is a good fit for them. The bidwells not only are meddlers, they dont want to pay any one, coaches, or players. You will always find guys that want to be apart of the nfl in any capacity, and you can find quality. we can add the browns, lions and rams into this mix as well. Try the saints, they were a mess top to bottom. You get the right guy at the right time and every thing falls into place. Oakland is attractive as well because of the high profile tradition. Charlie, what does Russell’s poor value have to do with Al Davis keeping him forever? Since when has Al Davis ever factored value into signing players? Heard of tommy kelly and Javon Walker?
December 17th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Truisms:
1.) Most coaches in the nfl are or hot up and coming coordinators, or retreads. With the occasional college guy sprinkled in. Davis is no differnt when he picks guys.
2.) All nfl owners call the final shots. Case and point bud adams(vince young), Jerry Jones and so on. Because of big Al’s status he gets all the press, but its the same way every where. Owners in business take input from the managers or executives they hire, however the make the final call. Of course an owner will pick a guy he believes will best execute is vision. This is the way it works here on earth.
3.)Jafartcus needs to show the team that he is willing to work hard enough to match his natural gifts, other wise this team will not respond to him. He will hopefully mature as a man first, which will allow him to become a pro qb.Very few guys come into the nfl ready made at any position.

Shuler was overated, leaf lacked maturity, smith was a party animal. Jamarcus has two of these traits. This move to let frye start, is davis allowing cable to dig his own grave, and at the same time taking jamarcus out of harms way. Jamrcus can now fade into the background, while davis attempts to overhaul his raiders. This should also be a wake up call for no.2. davis is shrewd above all else he is always hedging his bets and always has an exit strategy. The writting is on the wall, Cable is on his way out, especially when he loses 2 of the next 3.

Hey!
The younger idiotic version of Al Davis, Daniel Snyder….seems like he is wisening up and getting smart by hiring competent people like Bruce Allen.
While the stubborn old man will once again settle for a puppett and try and have his cronies convince the fans of the Raider Nation that Jim Fassel is a good choice as head coach?
How sad….
