Browns-Raiders no passing fancy
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 at 3:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The news out of Cleveland that Brady Quinn has been placed on injured reserve with a foot injury is cause for Elias Sports Bureau to fire up the computers.
Has there ever been an NFL game this late in the season where both starting quarterbacks had a passer rating under 50?
Anderson’s season has been so abysmal even JaMarcus Russell can turn up his nose at his numbers. Anderson has completed 42.9 percent of his passes (56-for-154) with two touchdowns and nine interceptions for a quarterback rating of 36.2.
Anderson had a game against Buffalo this year where he was 2-for-17 against Buffalo _ a game the Browns won 6-3. That was his only win in six starts.
Charlie Frye, should be pass neurological exams for a concussion and start, posted a 38.4 in his start against Denver. Admittedly, it was just one start.
But if Russell can’t play, and assuming Bruce Gradkowski can’t go, then Russell, with his 47.8 completion percentage, 49.6 passer rating and three touchdown passes and nine interceptions, would duel Anderson with with the possibility of a freezing wind coming off the lake.

Have two teams ever met with so much utter crap at QB??
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:22 pm
The question you have to ask yourselves is this; would it be better for Al to fire Cable at the end of this season or at 8 games or so into the 2010 season?
Either way Cable ain’t making it another full season in Oakland, so why not fire him when we might be able to hire a decent replacement instead of in the middle of next season when we might end up with Sanjay lal is interim HC?
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Our only hope is that Fargas is injured and Cable will once again be forced to go with Bush and McFadden.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:28 pm
I wouldn’t be upset if Cable got one year sans Jamarcus Russell.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Bush can train on the beach but McFadden might trip over the sand grains and get turf toe!
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:30 pm
It would be better if Cable wins COY like Vegas said.
If I am gonna play what if and maybe, I am gonne reach high instead of low
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:30 pm
I was really hoping that we would see Quinn this weekend.
Anderson should be good for a handful of sacks, at least one fumble and an INT. All in about 20 pass attempts.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Jerry
Given the fact that Al Davis is the boss of all things Raider, why is it that your reporting rarely mentions him?
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
With our inability to stop the run in most games, Anderson will have a game plan similar to ours. Ground game.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
If Tom Cable wins the last 2 games this year, hell he might receive some COY votes for this year!!

Oh yeah, Jerry,
The 49ers and Raiders were on at the same time Sunday. The TV ratings according to Chronicle Live:
49ers 14.39
Raiders 4.70
On top of the persistent blackouts, do you think CBS will be renegotiating down?
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Winning these next two would be big, real big.
The Cleaveland steamers should be folding but Mangini has them playing hard. Just our luck to run into RR now. These encounters seldom end well for us lately.
The we play a Raven team playing as well as they have all year.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:41 pm
I think the Raiders start winning, those numbers reverse and CBS has to pony up more dollars for the pleasure of working Raider games.

If the owners pushing to get rid of revenue sharing get their way, Davis will be forced to clean up his act, and fast.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I think KK has a fear of crowds or we would still be mourning Als demise and KK’s arrest.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:47 pm
“I think if you’ve been a head coach, you understand the different things that go into any season,” Mangini said Tuesday. “Mike’s last year in Seattle, they had a tough season and were 4-12.”
===================================================
Uh….Mangini. You might want to focus on what’s going on in your own kitchen and not point out Holmgren’s record in Seattle to try to save your job. Besides, I wouldn’t think that pointing out the new boss’ prior failures would help you much.

Senior Beeecham, why do you hate Kell so much. I understand why you hate me and Charged Up. My superior intelligence makes you jealous, and Charged Up is, well, a Chargers fan. Kell is certainly no formidable foe. Your constant attacks on the poor man just makes you look petty and childish. However, I guess we should expect that from a retarded man-child such as yourself.

My best year ever also.
I’m in four leagues and I’m in 3 Title games!
Would have been four out four in a title game but I started F Jackson as a flex ahead of Bradshaw (who would have thought) and I started Meachum ahead of Jennings. Oh well.
I’m in the money in 3 out of 4 FFL. Thats what I was hoping for going in.

Get over it…..LOL
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
KK,
Al currently has a payroll of $154 million dollars, but that number contains a lot of old contracts that are coming up I believe, so with him getting his $127 million dollar check from the NFL from just the TV deal he should be able to make this team profitable in no time.
I think Al is just suffering from his 08 spending spree, and as long as he doesn’t do it again he will be fine.
If he truly has a portion of the team up for sale again, I think he will just use the money to make it rain for schit players again, so he might be going down the wrong path, but I can’t imagine him losing the Raiders due to finances. He would just have to lay off the free agents for a season or two and you can’t lose money in the NFL.

Because he has the highest payroll with one of the lowest stadium generated income. BUT, he is never going to lose the team due to money…he may have to close his purse strings like he did last year, but with the TV contract there is no frigging way.
The only reason Al wants to sell part of his team again is to get some cash for another free agent frenzy IMO, which will hurt his bottom line, but it won’t put him under.
Or, another reason he might be selling non-controlling shares of the team is for estate planning purposes. His estate will owe major taxes when he dies and he might just be selling those shares off to feather his liquid account in case something happens to him and his estate has to pay taxes on his assets.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:14 pm

You people should learn about what you try and pawn off here. Davis sold shares in 06 but he never owned them prior. Al Davis bought shares from the family of a partner that had died to put to rest disagreements with the family. Al Davis dumped a headache and made a profit in doing so.
I have to laugh at all the talk for many a year of Al Davis and the Raiders and the lack of money. “they will never be able to resign their free agents, they cannot sign a number one pick, since they signed a number one pick last year they will not be able to keep their 4th pick and have to trade it, they cannot bring in any free agents, they can never resign both Shane and Nnamdi”.
Get a life, Al Davis could buy and sell the lot of you going back through your family trees. Sure he wants a modern place to play so he can stay with the other clubs but you do not have glass doors that are a work of art put on a second home when you are hard up for cash.

I think y’all ought to just give up the “Fire Cable” nonsense.
He is NOT going to be fired, nor should he be.
As I’ve said repeatedly, every single time the Raiders have had competent QB play, they’ve won this year.
Every time the Raiders have had atrocious QB play, they’ve lost.
See a pattern?
This team is playing hard for this coach, and they’re getting better and better.
And he’s improving as well.
I love his take on the 4th and 3 failed attempt from this past Sunday. He questioned his own decision after the fact, but, the team kept playing hard for him and they won.
I love the fact that he’s aggressive (too much sometimes), but, what the hell – you’re out of the playoff race. Why would you NOT go for it on 4th and 3?
If he had NOT gone for it, all you clowns would be calling for his head.
Some of you already have your minds made up and that’s fine.
Those of you who possess the ability to be objective and watch how things unfold would realize that this is a good coach who’s getting better and better.
And his team is growing with him.

What I do know….is that Al Davis has ruined the Raider franchise by stupid decision making the last 7 years.
The crappiness will continue as long as he is making the football and day to day operational decisions.

That “Looney old man” has put together a youth-filled team that has shown that it is on the cusp of being a good team, so long as they get adequate QB play.
If there’s anything we’ve learned from this season, it’s that.
Add a couple of good O-Lineman and a fire-spittin’ middle linebacker to this team and you suddenly have a playoff team.
Again – that all depends on the QB play. Gradkowsi has already shown that the level of the ENTIRE team goes up when the QB is playing well for the Raiders.
So. . . . .
Is that “old man” really all that “looney’???
You can dwell on the past all you want, and that’s fine.
But let’s talk about THIS roster.
After all, this roster is what the “looney old man” has been putting together for the past 7 years.
You think DHB is a bust? Hell no – I don’t.
You think D-Mac is a bust? Hell no – I don’t.
You think JaMarcus is a bust? Well. . .to be determined. I personally don’t.
There are some fantastic young players scattered across this roster.

DHB, DMAC, Russell are busts.
They have not played to the expectations of their draft status.
If those three were re-entered into the draft today….Russell would go undrafted, DMAC and DHB would be 4th round picks.
Chris Johnson, Matt Ryan, Percy Harvin…that’s what a top 10 pick is supposed to look like. Not fill-in role players or all-out busts the Raiders attract in the 1st round

LMN,
I still don’t think Bush is that good, or he would be good more than 2 or 3 times a year. He fumbles too much and asks out of games. Our O-line just kicked the crap out of the Donks this weekend. See the 20 yard TD, he was barely even touched.
He is our best RB, but I don’t think that is saying much.

December 22nd, 2009 at 6:18 pm
vegas…
no doubt he isnt a top5 RB yet, but he sure is our best… problem is that Cable never uses him the right way.. well sometimes… just as he almost never uses McFadden the right way…
I think he should use them both more often at the SAME time, with McFadden as a Wes Welker type…
reason why i asked 4EVAraider, is that last week he said Bush was crap and we should pick a RB in the RB in the first round which to me was an totally imbecile suggestion…
December 22nd, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Walker = roadgrader at guard, hell pay him Tackle money and keep him at LG….Gallery’s back being the ?
December 22nd, 2009 at 6:22 pm
Vegas…
futhermore…
Bush would have such a game each week if our Oline played like they did against denver…
and regarding his breathers, well Adrian Peterson would have to get off the field if his coach called so many stupid run plays in row, AND with such an O-line…
December 22nd, 2009 at 6:24 pm
LMN,
I’ve been preaching trading Bush and a 3rd rounder for a Jonathan Stewart, Marshawn Lynch type. I could be swayed away if both Bush and Darren keep improving like the last couple weeks.
I think all of our RB’s would struggle to get carries on other teams around the league, and plenty of backups could come here and start.
When you think you have 3 RB’s, you really don’t have any.
But yes, Cable doesn’t use Bush right. Don’t know what to say about Darren, can’t use him as WR with Russell, because, well…Russell doesn’t complete passes to WR’s.
December 22nd, 2009 at 6:30 pm

December 22nd, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I agree with Vegas Raider to certain extent. I think we need to wait it out with Mcfadden. Bush is a good runner with decent speed, but he’s not a speed back. Fargas has good ball security (of the three) and good acceleration and OKAY power, but he’s not a speed back or a power back. All three of them need 20 carries a game to be good. Mcfadden need not 20 carries but 20 touches i.e. Catches and WildCat. But in the end it doesn’t matter what we write on this blog. Al Davis doesn’t give a Shiite what we think. Even if it makes sense.

December 22nd, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Truth is if we stuck with the run and ran MORE power. One of the above mentioned backs would be over a 1,000 yards. we’d have won two more games. But what hurt us the most was Jamasterbate at QB and McFadden’s knee injury. What was funny was we ran the ball well against Denver the first time, Mcfadden kept coughing up the ball and Jamasterbate was completing passes to the other team. In the end our QB received a game ball from Josh Mcdaniels the first go around.

Can’t blame Cable too much on Fargas THIS year. When he and Gary Russell started playing, it gave the team a little spark.
Now Bush should get the bulk of the carries to see if he has one of his “hot” spells.
But Bush runs hot/cold. And another fumble this past week. Our RB’s consistantly fumble more than the team we are playing. Almost weekly.

DKnight:
Now we need continued experience and consistency.
Not another freakin’ overhaul.
^^^^^^^^^
I don’t think DMC is a bust….he is just not being used properly.
Russell and DHB have a long way to go.
The problem is the old man doesn’t know who to spend money on free agents and doesn’t allow coaches to do what it takes to win in this day and age of football.
An example is him insisting on “vertical passing attack” and man to man defense rush four defense with hardly no blitzing. Predictable schemes like that doesn’t cut it in this day and age of football if you want to consistently win.
He doesn’t realize what is good for the franchise and fans. Just cares about what is good for himself and his ego…..

It’s different now though. The amount of money todays football players make has had a negative effect, when it comes to who plays for the love of the game, and who is just trying to collect a big paycheck.
December 22nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm
DKnight, the teams that win manage to find the players that do take their jobs seriously. I can see how as a Raider fan, it’s easy to think that all players are lazy and need to be motivated. But it’s not the case with the better teams in the league, at least for the most part.
December 22nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm
DKnight007,
Fair point.
I think when players enter the league and are handed 30 Million guaranteed, it takes away the hunger to succeed that others have had.
I think JaMarcus may have let all the money go to head, and not realize that his career just started.
I think DHB is a case where he can’t handle the pressure of being the first WR chosen and the fame that comes along with it.
But still, money or no money, it is up to the player to find the motivation within himself. If they can’t do it, then they should be replaced.
Brett Favre and Jerry Rice are two players who have great drive and desire. They didn’t need to be pushed even though they have enough cash and fame.

December 23rd, 2009 at 5:16 am
The Raiders need to dump salary and bad players in the offseason. First, if JaBust does not restructure, he will be cut before his bonus is due. Which would probably be late in the pre-season. DHB needs to go to the bench and stay there. He is not an NFL caliber WR, he has the worst hands ever for a wr picked at the number 7 spot in the draft. DHB is a bum and needs to go. There will be many changes on the Raiders roster due to the fact that the Raiders can cut some dead weight. Work on the 0-line and D-line in the offseason and move forward.
No Jabust and no DHB will make it a great year for the Raiders next season…

I think Heyward-Bey, Murphy, Mitchell, Shaughnessy & Myers will be much better next season.
sometimes it takes a few years for young guys to “get it”
However, I understand your point. Value for the picks was terrible. could have traded down or selected a different player and then traded back up, etc.
Last year was worse imo. drafting McFadden when we already had Jordan, Rhodes, Fargas, Bush & Echemandu was mind blowing. Even more of a head scratcher was passing on Ryan Clady (best ZBS tackle in the draft) to give Kwame Harris a shot at LT!
2007 was an awful year to draft a QB.
JaMarcus Russell
Brady Quinn
Kevin Kolb
John Beck
Drew Stanton
Trent Edwards
Jeff Rowe
Troy Smith
Jordan Palmer
Tyler Thigpen
Kolb might be the best of the bunch!

December 23rd, 2009 at 6:24 am
I TOTALLY agree Dirt-Lot
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:28 am
Considering we wasted our first two draft picks and endured the turmoil of Hansen-gate and a fat burger-eating waste of bum wipe as a failed leader on the offensive side of the ball, we’re only a defensive stand (San Diego) and a touchdown drive (K.C.) away from being .500 — and that exceeds the expectations of almost all the so-called “experts” before the year started. I was crying when we didn’t pick up Raji in Round One, and stunned when we picked up the Ohio Bobcat in Round Two. Other than Murphy, not much from this year’s crop!
Fast forward — I think Cable should stay. First priority is draft the best available offensive lineman in Round One (hopefully, either Okung or Williams will still be there). If we could be lucky enough to have Dunlap fall to us in Round Two, that would be sweet.
We can’t do anything with DHB, other than hope he becomes a dependable third option. We may have to search the free agent market for another pair of hands. End this thing with Javon — enough already!
With Gradkowski and Frye, we may not have an All-Pro behind center, but at least someone who could manage a game. Didn’t Trent Dilfer take the Mavens all the way to the Super Bowl a few years back? It COULD happen again, you know.
Just a few thoughts, off the top …
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:28 am
That’s what the draft is…a crap shoot. One may never know…
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:28 am
I normally don’t go in for the “what if” stuff. Not just for what you’ve said Dirt-lot,but because it just doesn’t do you any good wondering and drives you nuts!
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:31 am
Also a td drive against SD in SD…and a 2 pt coversion. We would have been above .500! Who would have thought that?
Dilfer was the qb, but I believe it was their D that took that team to the SB, not him…my opinion of course.
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:33 am
Don’t go down that “what if” road it will drive you nuts!!

December 23rd, 2009 at 6:37 am
I truly believed that Cable’s philosophy worked with the players early-on. When they came out in Game One, I think a lot of them truly believed we could turn this thing around this year … the last-minute defensive meltdown shattered them a bit, I think. Then, when JaBustus started tanking and, basically, giving up, I think the team started taking on that defeatist mentality (I saw that when I went to the game in New York — EVERYBODY quit!) Gradkowski and Frye have been a breath of fresh air and have shown us what CAN happen without the biggest QB bust of the decade to misguide us. I just hope we don’t have to rely on Losman in the last two games – God help us all!

You’ve got to wonder at the Raiders selection process, don’t we have a scouting department ? Not every player will work out but you’ve got to think that the majority will.
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:46 am
……and let’s face it.We’re not a team of superstar pro-bowl players.
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:46 am
What you want for Christmas, Dirt Lot? Thanks for the coffee this morning!

December 23rd, 2009 at 6:54 am
How many TDs does Murphy have this year? 6? At least this year wasn’t the worst for points (2006), but maybe for offensive production, no?
I think, barring any stupid injury, that our receiving core will be great next year. JLH needs to get over that hit he took opening night. I think he’s finally getting over it…I think…
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:54 am
Imagine the SportsCenter highlights if Sunday’s game resulted in injuries that forced a J.P Losman vs. Brett Ratliff matchup. Oooooooooooooo — Peyton vs. Favre would have nothing on that!

now… if you want to talk about bad drafts…
may i nominate the 2009 draft…
should be a slam dunk for the worst draft in Raider history…
**********************************
I disagree Pete. While DHB is a complete flop, and Mike Mitchell is playing better but not living up to the 2nd round selection, at least not yet.
However, Louis Murphy was the best 4th round selection in the draft, and Matt Shannessey is the second most productive D-line rookie, behind Orakpo. Matt S has 4 sacks, behind only Clay Matthews and Orakpo among ALL rookies.
So not worst of “all-time”, IMO. And if DHB (not likely) or Mike Mitchell (more likely) become effective, than it wasn’t even that bad.

#1 PEYTON MANNING MAY HAVE STUNK IT UP LIKE RUSSELL IN OAKLAND..
#2 U JUST HOPE U PICK A PLAYER WITH THE HEART AND DRIVE TO WANT IT IN THE NFL
***
Dirt Lot: you just basically answered your own question. Manning would fair far better in Oakland than Russell simply because he “gets it” , “wants it” , and puts the work in. he knows that film study and chemistry with his o-line & WR’s are important.
Peyton had a change at HC, OC, DC, O-Line coach and lost his favorite target Marvin Harrison this offseason. they plug in rookie late-round picks on the o-line & d-line and Manning simply finds a way to get the job done. He’s a winner. MVP & Pro Bowl because he chooses to be great. he’s more concerned with winning than funny haircuts (mohawk) & diamonds …
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:58 am
I don’t know, Dirt-Lot … I’ve seen some pretty sharp outfits on some rather large NFL beefers. I’m sure Crabtree would do you proud — maybe we should find his cousin, so we can hook you up! He thinks he’s Superman, you know …

4eva Gallery has short arm how no one checked this out is beyond me and just cause you’re rated high don’t mean you are worth it, saw many scouting reports that said gallery lacked quickness to be a LT in NFL but the T-rex arms are what throw me besides Rivers, and Big Ben went after him wow.
December 23rd, 2009 at 7:50 am
Oh man, I nearly had a heart attack last night…Kobe almost blew out his knee.
I broke out in a sweat when he was on the floor clutching his knee.

I wanted that WR out of Pitt…what was his name? Fitzhugh? Fitzmaurice? Fitzgerald! Yeah that was his name….has he done anything in the NFL?
But I understood why we took Gallery…everyone said he would be a franchise LT for 12 years.
Al, you had the right idea with the Gallery-Grove picks, so don’t let their failures dictate your future drafts. Quit passing up o-linemen!

2 LIONS 2 0.513
3 BUCCANEERS 2 0.558
4 BROWNS 3 0.509

10 RAIDERS 5 0.518
11 49ERS 6 0.487
12 PANTHERS 6 0.549

I never thought I would be so happy that the Raiders may NOT have a top ten pick.
December 23rd, 2009 at 8:57 am
Don’t get me wrong..Spiller is good.
December 23rd, 2009 at 8:58 am
Most mocks have us taking Rolando McClain, Taylor Mays, or Sam Bradford.
I really don’t see any of those.
I’m hoping for MLB, OLine, or DT.
If you think about it, Al has gotten his
QB of the future (insert laugh track here)
RB
WR
S (Huff finally paying off)
CB (Aso, not Fabian)
LT, er, LG (but has his guy in Mario)
He’s got his DE’s, and as Ellis is getting old, one could be found really anywhere in the draft or FA.
I can’t see him drafting anything but a member of the front 7 or a RT maaaybe C.
He could surprise us (or not surprise us?) and take a CB, but my money is on what we should have gotten all along, big uglies.
Al loves speed, but let’s not forget, he likes – or did for decades – bad@$$ mthafckas on D.
December 23rd, 2009 at 8:58 am
I hope Cable use’s Pears as a T-El and we run the ball down rr’s throat
December 23rd, 2009 at 9:01 am
r8eray
We didn’t need one in 07.
I’m just playing, really.
Although with Bradford, Dez Bryant, and Spiller all on the board you really want to tear up when thinking about Russell, DHB, and McFadden (although he will be redeemed).
It’s way too early for Al to give up on DHB and McFadden still shows promise. Russell is moving into lost cause status quicker than he can put away a double double.
December 23rd, 2009 at 9:02 am
4eva
I really like Pears in that jumbo set.
Would also serve us well in PA.
December 23rd, 2009 at 9:04 am
An outstanding O Line and more creativity on offense wins us an extra 2 games, easy. Especially with good QB play (Gradkowski).
Bradford is a smart and accurate guy. McCoy’s a gamer. But do we really want to start over again? Maybe we could actually develop who we have for a change.
December 23rd, 2009 at 9:08 am
If you think Russell is stealing money wait till Bey is done at least Russel’s first practice they didn’t have to go through the basics this is how you take a snap this is how you throw, that’s all they could do with Bey work on catching the ball maybe next year they can work on running routes right than maybe in 4-5 yrs we will have a good WR.

Don’t forget guys that today is the day we find out about Gradkowski for Sunday. I’m keeping my eyes peeled for Jerry’s update on that. I’m hoping he plays only if he can play well enough. For christ sake I saw him jumping on the sidelines in celebration so maybe it isn’t too bad. I’m tired of Jmasterbate, next time I see him taking a snap I’m going to swallow a bullet.

By the time DHB gets it, he will be out of a Raider uniform. DHB will never get it, he has terrible hands, plain and simple. He is a track guy in a football uniform. He was not that great in college, and it is translating over to the NFL. He will be gone when the majority of his guaranteed money is up. He has been a complete bust, especially when you look at the wideouts taken after him. We have one on our team taken in the 4th round that will always be a much better player. I just wish the Raiders could cut their losses with JaBust and DHB, but as always it is the money that dictate when these players go. DHB cannot be gone soon enough. It makes me sick to see the Raiders blunder the first couple of rounds of the draft, year after year. I keep hoping one of these days they will have a complete draft and not just a draft where all of our later round picks perform so much better than our first couple of round picks.
DHB go back to Maryland, maybe you and JaBust can hang out at the clubs together and spend all your new found fortunes.
