Cable awaiting word on Gradkowski, Frye

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 at 10:38 am in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Tom Cable told Cleveland media by conference call he was awaing word on whether Charlie Frye had passed tests following a concussion which enable him to be available to face the Browns Sunday.

Cable said he would know more about Bruce Gradkowski Thursday.

If all three quarterbacks were healthy, Gradkowski would start, with Frye next in line if available.

More to come . . .

its funny Cable would wait to see if 2 injured qbs are healthy enuff to play instead of a fully healthy Russell…i think he is trying to prove to Al he can win WITHOUT Russell and salvage his job for next year…Raiders have beaten Playoff caliber teams and stuck through all the legal problems plus Raiders need consistency…Please keep Cable next year! and THE REAL MADDEN RAIDER before u come out with ur negative sh*t STFU!!

hey fellas. havent heard much of anything about seymour latlely. he was known to be a Lamar Odom type and play hard when he wants to. only had 1 tackle against donks. granted he is probably being double teamed, but most dominant dlinemen are. also noticed he’s been playing a lot of DT, especially on 3rd down. just curious how u guys feel about the fact that he really hasnt done anything other than fight with the opposition of late. ????????????????????????????????????

  37. new englandraider Says:

i will say, his presence on the field has probably helped out. in fact it has. i know that. but him personally, only 3-4 good statistical games i can remember

If I remember correctly, Seymore signed for 1 year. You guys think he will be back?

  40. new englandraider Says:

raiderress…. i agree in a way that dt needs an upgrade. ive always thaught warren was better based on production vs salary than kelly. however have been enlightened to the fact he’s in the top 5 of dlinemen in tackles. and he had a great game sunday. whole front 7 played well. s position is strong. i’d much prefer this team fix the oline. we’ve seen this d with kelly and warren at dt be great at times. we’ve shut down a few good rb’s this yr. i think our defensive problems are more lb related. not their talent or ability but their responsibilities. id pick an o lineman 1st 3 picks. or 3 out of 1st 4. we need to prepare as if gallery will not be here

  41. new englandraider Says:

they will franchise him. seymour i mean

  42. new englandraider Says:

Raider miopia starts with Al Davis.

  47. inonewordraider Says:

seymour beats single coverage every time, get’s a pocket push every time ellis is doing good as well. Kelly and Warren have been average and that’s the problem

  48. hellsbells Says:

Just a couple weeks ago Kelly was leading all interior D-line man in tackles. Don’t know if he has slipped lately, but he makes more tackles than people think. Warren’s contract is up, we really need a real NT to shore up the line. Maybe Cody if we pick in the teens.

  49. inonewordraider Says:

I could live w/ henderson, gallery, and satele but carlisle and green cannot start. right side of our line get’s no push and collapses on pass downs

  50. new englandraider Says:

should we start frye or Jyrannosaurus russell? i say we go with russel actually. frye played 50 minutes roughly. 9-17 68 yrds 1 int. those aren’t exactly gradkowski type #’s. i dont think frye will be here next year as we will sign grads. so if grads cant start, russell should. especially with game on the road. he seems more comfortable outside of oakland. maybe frye will have a good game against cleveland. frye had a great running game going and surprisingly a good effort in pass protection and managed jruss type numbers. may as well just let russell play. i think.

  51. new englandraider Says:

i admit to having been on tommy kelly all yr. granted we all know he’ll never live up to his contract. but…… he did have major knee surgery so normally people in all sports are better 2nd yr after surgery. tk did play a helluva game sunday

  52. inonewordraider Says:

tackles is a great stat for a DL, didn’t realize how well he was doing. we should start w/ OL but lb and the other dt spot wouldn’t be a bad place to go either

  53. new englandraider Says:

post 49, i agree 100% carlisle sux. i think green would be a decent rg. he had his usual false start penalty this week. dont be surprised to see us draft a fb in the 4th round or so. lawton sucks. he misses blocks, cant catch, and is no threat to run. what happened to gruss. ko’s only. how many times have we seen carlisle whiff on a block? or get flat out blown up?

  54. raiderzmaverick Says:

I’d say Semour is doing his job. And I hope we keep him for next year. He, if nothing else, is a good leader on the field. He plays with intensity and will keep the other players in line.

  55. RaiderResurrection Says:

For a DLineman, Tackles for losses is the stat that’s needed. The NFL leaders in tackles are not Pro Bowlers. Take a look.

  56. raiderzmaverick Says:

I think Frye played better than his numbers indicated. He made plays instead of loosing plays. Jamarcus wouldn’t have made that drive if not for a couple of miracles. Frye would have had at least one more touchdown if not for a drop of a perfectly thrown pass.

  57. new englandraider Says:

im up and down with our lb’s. seems when they’re in the right places they do pretty well. man thomas howard was a beast last yr. he’s fallen off a little. defense has been a lot better since the scott to lb move. also haveing MM line up as a lb/3rd S has almost eliminated the wr on a lb matchup that was killing us early in the season. you guys have got to admit that when our offense can sustain an occasional drive, our defense is pretty damn good. is it not?

  58. new englandraider Says:

    raider mav, couple of miracles?

  59. new englandraider Says:

    recovered fumble and pi penalty?

  60. raiderzmaverick Says:

Defense has been playing a lot better since Russell has been out of the starting line up. You don’t think having him turn the ball over on the 1st series with a fumble and then an interception or going 3 and out many times in a row won’t effect the defense?

  61. raiderzmaverick Says:

Yeah, the fumble he had which bounced right into the hands of Carlisle (when he was the ONLY Raider close to it and there were 3 or 4 Broncos guys near there).

Then a HORRIBLY UNDERTHROWN pass gets a Pass Interference on 2nd and 24(?) to give yet another opportunity.

  62. new englandraider Says:

i’ll give you those two. the pi penalty was a perfect throw man. had murphy not been grabbed, that ball was gonna split the 2 defenders as it did and catch murphy in stride for 6. that play looked like the jlh td vs buffalo last yr. and bush dropped a pass. so jruss woulda been 6-11 with 50 plus yrds coming in coldd off the bench. dont get me wrong, im not myopic and think russel is great. right now he sux, but the dude nuts up in the clutch. maybe he hasn’t got time to think. thats probably a good thing. lol

C,mon, REALLY?! Are your serious? Just when we’re starting to make a little progress, you’re willing to throw it all away because of one drive (that featured a couple of key penalties)? REALLY? You must be on JaMarcus’s payroll to post blog entries!!

  64. new englandraider Says:

of course it effects the d. my point was that i think we should go heavy with oline picks. thats all. and to say i think we’ve got a potentially great defense

  65. raiderzmaverick Says:

I think the reason he “plays well in the clutch” is that the defense plays looser trying to avoid giving up the Big Play in general.

They did one thing VERY smart this game though. They had him throw mostly to the middle of the field where he’s most effective. And had the WRs doing curl routes, coming back at him, so he doesn’t have to time the passes in front of the receiver. That’s where he seems to REALLY SUCK. When he has a receiver running down field and slanting one way or straight cross the field he has to time depth and angle and it goes WAY OFF. Or when someone’s running straight across and he has to throw with touch he just bullets it at their knees or lower.

Maybe not always, but it seems more often than not that’s the case.

  66. raidertbone Says:

I agree that we need to go heavy on O-line and D-line; however, LB and Safety are also getting to be concerns.

  67. new englandraider Says:

not at all to the bone. i’d rather have grads over both. however with that said who is more likely to be here next season frye or russ? probably russell. no? i’ll say it again right now and possibly 4ever JAMARCUS RUSSELL SUX. i dont see al davis giving up on him yet. lets not 4get how bad nnamdi was in 1st 2 years. awful. huff, awful. now look. not saying russell will amount to anything, who knows. i just think frye will not be here next year, so may as well see if russell can do. i dunno. lol do i sound like an idiot? i must.

  68. raiderzmaverick Says:

I like the look of our Defense also. I would try to create more competition with MLB, DT and Nickel Back but otherwise, I’m pretty happy with it also. None of those are OH MY GAWD WE NEED HELP type things.

On Offense, I think we need a lot more help.

QB competition (I’m still not totally sold on Gradowski 100% and think we need another QB who could be a starter). RT, Center, RG. We need another FB. And ideally one more WR who can slot where DHB is supposed to play (as per Cable it’s different than Schillens and Murphy who I’m happy with).

  69. new englandraider Says:

to the bone. what’s the concern about the S position?

    ————————————————
How is Safety a concern??? We have 3 quality Safeties on our roster now. Mitchell can’t even get playing time (and when he does play he’s playing very good) because Huff and Branch are lighting things up.

  71. raiderzmaverick Says:

And, to answer your question, I’d prefer Frye starting over Russell without thinking twice.

  72. new englandraider Says:

im sure they will put the transition tag on huff if they dont re-sign him. branch is going to be a beast. this is basically his rookie yr. another off season in the weight room he’ll be a pro bowl caliber safety. in fact if he doesnt go this year, somethings wrong. mitchell is gonna be nasty. you can see it. all the talk about his lack of coverage skills is proposterous. aside from td in the wash game i cant think of any reception he’s allowed. i think for the 1st time in a long time we’re set at S

  73. raiderzmaverick Says:

Yeah, the problem’s going to be how to best utilize 3 talented safeties when you normally only play 2.

  74. raiderzmaverick Says:

I think as long as the QB plays “safe ball” and doesn’t turn it over a lot we can win if we give Bush the ball 15+ times.

  75. RaiderResurrection Says:

I think our DB situation especially in today’s soft as hell NFL. We need ruthless aggression on Defense and a real Nose Tackle on the line.

  76. new englandraider Says:

mav, i like how they’ve been using mm now. letting scott go to de on passing downs and putting mm in as a lb/s with cover or blitz responsibilities. man im gonna get me a mike mitchell jersey i think

u guys amaze me. someone tell me the average time it take for a qb to learn the wco. anyone that answers less than 5 years doesn’t know squat about football. grads SHOULD BE GOOD IN THIS OFFENSE! he’s been hanging with hackett for the last 4-5 seasons whereas russell has had exacly ONE offseason to learn the offense. grads also got the hook in tampa. give teams time 2 prepare for him and it will be evident why he’s bounced around the league. I will agree that jruss doesn’t look good in this system but I won’t go to the point to say he sucks. he is not a good fit for hacketts system & hackett is a bum because he has not tried to train the guy either. he’s gone next year, hackett that is & the entire off.staff 4 that matter, book it. the whole thing with russell is the money & the color of his skin. jokes about his mouth being open, being dumb well look at the average baller…they all have their mouth open. its called BREATHING. make all the jokes u want, the money is in the bank & there is NOTHING anyone can do about it so get over it and get over yourself.

  80. DownTheBayMOG Says:

to prove my case, look at fryes #s through 3 quarters of play..rougly 50 yards passing and an int WITH THE RUNNING GAME GOING. some guys are west coast qbs and some are not & frye knows the system better than any of the qbs. he’s been tutoring russell & they watch film every tuesday @ russells house. word in the street is that frye is a friggn genius in the film room & on the grease board.
