Defenders look forward to seeing Ryan

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 at 3:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News, notes and quotes from Wednesday’s pracitce, open locker room session and Tom Cable’s post-practice press briefing as the Raiders prepare to face the Cleveland Browns:

– Linebacker Kirk Morrison had a call on his cell phone Monday morning and recognized the booming voice immediately.

“It’s on! It’s bedlam!”

And then Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan hung up.

Linebacker Thomas Howard looked forward to talking with Ryan before the game when teams take the field for initial warmups.

“We love that guy from when he was here,” Howard said. “You always have a place in your heart for a guy like that. He drafted me and was my coordinator. But, hey, we’re on opposite sides of the field this Sunday and we’re getting after him. Like he said, it’s bedlam.”

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, a safety learning to play corner, thought Ryan’s brash confidence was something he needed during difficult times earlier in his career.

“He was one of the only coaches that stuck by me when I was in the beginning of my career trying to learn the new position,” Asomugha said. “The amount of confidence he had in me was huge and it did a lot for my development as far as growth with the cornerback position. I owe a lot to him and he knows that already so it’s going to be great seeing him. He’s a favorite of mine.”

– Cable didn’t have a lot of details regarding Frye’s starting assignment other than to say he’s passed the requisite tests, expects him to be able to play and that he looked fine in practice.

“I know that when I came out here they said Charlie’s passed everything and he’s good to go, so that’s what I can report to,” Cable said.

He thinks Frye will build on his game against Denver, where he wasn’t impressive statistically but managed the game well and narrowly missed on two potentially big throws.

“I think he will be better from the standpoint of A, conditioning, and then B, the fact that now he’s been in there and gone through it and got on a nice run, a nice stride, in terms of his flow of the game,” Cable said. `Now he’ll be able to relax and go play.

He didn’t have specifics on Zach Miller, other than that he’d been cleared to practice and was was limited.

– Those who didn’t pracitce included RB Justin Fargas (knee), WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (foot), WR-KR Nick Miller (tibia), QB Bruce Gradkowski (knees), TE Brandon Myers (concussion) and DE Greg Ellis (knee). Those who were limited included Miller, G Cooper Carlisle (knee) and CB Chris Johnson (ankle).

– The first thing Richard Seymour saw was Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall , “who said, “Oh, wow.”

Then he saw linemate Tommy Kelly, having lost his uniform pants near the goal line.

“I looked, and they were around his ankles,” Seymour said.

Jay Richardson wasn’t in the game, but had even a better view _ although it was one he would rather forget.

“I looked up at the Jumbotron and saw his big rear-end,” Richardson said. “He’s famous.”

Richardson said teammates were finding Youtube videos of the play as they boarded the team flight home.

    ‘Twas the night before Cleveland, when all through the Raiders

    Not a creature was stirring, not even the haters ;

    The jockstraps were hung by the chimney with care,

    In hopes that Bo Jackson soon would be there;

    The nation’s children were nestled all snug in their beds,

    While visions of Charlie Frye danced in their heads;

    And Tommy Kelly in his ‘jockstrap, and Madden Raider in his 49ers cap,

    Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,

    When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

    Madden Raider sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

    Away to the window he flew like a flash,

    Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

    The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

    Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

    When, what to his wondering eyes should appear,

    But a silver and black minivan, and eight Oakland Raiders in full pads and gear,

    With a little old driver, so angry and shameless,

    He knew in a moment it must be Al Davis.

    More rapid than eagles his Players they came,

    And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

    “Now, Fargas! now, Russell! now, Miller and Mitchell!

    On, Seymour! on Lawton! on, Ellis and Heyward-Bey!

    To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

    Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

    As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

    When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

    So up to the house-top the Players they flew,

    With the bag full of something, and Al Davis too.

    And then, in a twinkling, he heard on the roof

    The prancing and pawing of each little cleated hoof.

    As he drew in his head, and was turning around,

    Down the chimney Al Davis came with a bound.

    He was dressed all in sweats, from his head to his foot,

    And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

    A bundle of something he had flung on his back,

    And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

    His eyes — how they drooped! his dimples how scary!

    His teeth were like fangs, his knuckles so hairy!

    His droll little mouth was drawn down in a scowl,

    And the diaper of his butt was as white as the snow;

    The stump of a camel he held tight in his teeth,

    And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

    He had a thin face and a little round belly,

    That shook, when he coughed like a bowlful of jelly.

    He was sick and tired, a right angry old elf,

    And Madden Raider laughed when he saw him piss himself;

    But A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

    Soon gave Madden Raiders to know he had something to dread;

    He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

    And beat Madden Raider within an inch of dead; then turned with a jerk,

    And laying his crooked fingers aside of his nose,

    And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

    He sprang to his van, to his team gave a whistle,

    And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

    But Madden Raider heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

    “Russell’s a great Quarterback. Get over it tonight!”

    I was watching the game winning drive against the Broncos, and afterward, when Green began talking to JaMarcus. I got the impression from that conversation that JaMarcus believes he walks on water, and is too good for God. Was it just me?

    Yeah…had a hard time yesterday with the wind! Trying to smoke a turkey. Started last nite, still need about 8-10 hours.

    I did saw Jovan Walker go ape-shyt on the sidelines afterwards. Good to see he is earning his money

    The wife is making homemade sauce with all kinds of pork, sausages, and braciole as we speak. At the office doing expense reports and other busy work.

    I hate the sunny days were it is cold and super-windy. If you are out near Aliante it is probably even windier out there!

    good luck on the turkey!!

    I will continue if I may:

    and to Madden Raider, with delight and surprise

    appeared before him, the great, old Shiney Eyes.

    with an overhead projector, and a crooked index finger

    the smell of his Depends, in the room did linger.

    With Lance all but gone, and visions of Rob Ryan dancing in his head

    He claimed “the Raiders will win more Super Bowls before I am dead”.

    and with a flash and a cough, the old man flew away

    with Madden Raider’s dreams of a GM, here to stay.

    I didn’t see it, but heard people talk about this brush-off with Green.

    ——————————————————-

    You mean the same Cornell Green who stomped up and down the week before embarrasing Russell and the Raiders ON THE FIELD?

    The same guy who laid on the ground in the Denver game with his head in his hands shaking his head after HE gave up ANOTHER sack?

    As much as Cornbread has CLEARLY been the worst OL we’ve had post Kwame, for him to pull those antics? I’m brush his arse off too! Fugg that POS!

    I think it is safe to say that Jhill isn’t going to be leading the “re-sign” Cornell Green campaign, lol

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

    All I want for Christmas are contract extensions for Phil and Kobe.

  • jhill

    Dogg,

    There’s been a few people “interpreting” an interaction between Russell and Green after the game. I didn’t see the exchange, and probably wouldn’t put too much on it. “Interpreting” what they “thought” they saw in a 1 second screen shot is, well, you know.

    But if there was something too it, can you really blame Russell for being bitter towards Green? Of all people to try and show someone up on the field? LMFAO at Green having ANYTHING to say!

  • http://sportmag.us/images/Lester_Hayes_November_1981.jpg RaiderDogg

    From what I have heard Kobe is close to signing. I don’t know about Phil.

    My kid loves that new puppet commercial when Kobe and LBJ dunk on the reindeer. He keeps singing “Dunking on that reindeer, d-d-d-dunking on that reindeer”

    Pau signed one last night right?

    How about those Warriors, 3rd worst record in the NBA…..jezus can we give up on the small ball already and actually play a real SF and PF? They started CJ Watson at the 3 last night, and subbed in Radmonvic at the 5. Who would have thought that wouldn’t work??

  • jhill

    Vegas,

    Did I mention I wanted an OT in the first round?

    LOL!

  • http://sportmag.us/images/Lester_Hayes_November_1981.jpg RaiderDogg

    Jhill

    I agree, Cornell Green needs to check himself if he is tripping on anyone else’s play on the field. His “technique” is that of a bullfighter. Ole!

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

    Yep. Pau and Bynum are locked in for the next few years, so are Odom and Artest…now we just need Kobe and Phil on board to win three more titles in the next five or six seasons.

    Vegas,

    Boy I just don’t like the idea of drafting a guy and moving his position. Not with this organization and coaching carousel.

    Now if they don’t re-sign Mario it might make more sense. But than we are still replacing a guy with a rookie who may end up making more money and with no idea if he will be better.

    This really worries me. We get decent to above average LT play and would rather focus elsewhere at the other numerous holes.

    RT in round 2 for me.

  • jhill

    Vegas,

    I share your concern, but it’s not my $, lol!

    I simply have OL as the biggest areas of need on the team. We need to upgrade RT, C, and RG, in that order, IMO. All BEFORE we upgrade DT and MLB.

    I think one of those positions will surely be filled with BIG Langston. Hopefully RG.

    My ideal scenario is trading our first rd pick for an established pro bowl RT or C and a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

  • spellcheck

    Offensive Line has been the biggest need of the Raiders for 7 years…..Glad some of you morons finally recognize it.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

    I agree that is an area that needs upgrading. Not saying your way wouldn’t work, and I like the idea of Walker at RG.

    I would draft a natural RT, in round 2 and let cornbread walk and of course re-sign Mario at LT. Tackles should be set for 4-5 years at least.

    At C, I don’t think Satele is the long-term answer, but he can man the ship for a year or two. Draft a C/G prospect in round 3 or 4 and groom him to start in a year.

    I like LB or CB/KR (Javier Arenas) in round 1. The biggest hole on this team is Routt. He is good for at least one automatic first down penalty and 40+ yard reception a game. He is killing us.

    Sad news for Jason Smith, #2 pick in the draft. Shutting it down for the season and still feeling effects of concussion over a month ago, FROM PRACTICE.

    His career might be over.

    Rams might have the #2 pick 3 years in a row. Drafted 2 lineman last two years, with zero success. And let’s watch that great Cleveland Offense with their two 1st round picks on the O-line.

    It’s the players not the position folks.

  • SharkCatcher

    I Guess one of the ” four cadillacs” is a lemon

  • SharkCatcher

    we should have drafted one of the usc linebackers… this time last year we were arguing about how usc guys sucked, I remember clady and Williams being brought up all the time..look at them boys from sc now?? all 3 are balling !!~!

  • jhill

    Problem is the combine, Vegas.

    Pre combine, Smith was behind Oher, Smith, and Monroe.

    We know all year who the best players are, then the combine comes and some GMs throw out all their common sense and overlook what happened on the field.

  • SharkCatcher

    where are those guys that said we should have drafted maybin,chung, ramsen, vaughn,..they all have been dissapointing this season..Bottom line: we should have drafted crabtree, he has more receptions than our entire reciving corps…and he missed 5 games!!!

  • SharkCatcher

    add ron brace to that list

  • CaptainBlack

    Anybody, has Monroe played well?

  • SharkCatcher

    Long-term solutions: Eugene Monroe has played the bulk of the season at left tackle, respectively. he has not been consistent, but the team loves his skill sets and upside. And early work means he will get to the levels the team projected when spending such high picks on him sooner rather than later.

  • 4evaRaider

    Willis too

  • SharkCatcher

    The guy Al really wanted was AARON CURRY
    aka the rich mans sam williams
    ( He’s also under the radar and hasnt made much noise this season)

  • 4evaRaider

    Maybe thats what Al thinks with his WR’s
