Otis signed to practice squad
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 at 11:40 am in Oakland Raiders.
Quarterback Jeff Otis was in the locker room Wednesday, having been signed to the practice squad, an indication that the Raiders aren’t sure if Bruce Gradkowski or Charlie Frye will be available to practice.
Having Otis for scout team reps would leave JaMarcus Russell and J.P. Losman running the Raiders offense during practice.
More to come . . .

Pete’s Draft – 1st Edition
1st Round – Center
Stefen Wisniewski*, Penn State
Height: 6-3. Weight: 298.
Projected 40 Time: 5.13.
We should trade down to pick up an extra pick in the 2nd or 3rd and then take this kid. A real live, smart center with a little bit of a pedigree…
2nd Round – Defensive Tackle
Dan Williams, Tennessee
Height: 6-3. Weight: 327.
Projected 40 Time: 5.25.
2nd Team All SEC – I like big, mean, heavy loads in the middle…
3rd Round (1st pick) – Middle Linebacker
Micah Johnson, Kentucky – Scouting Report
Height: 6-2. Weight: 254.
Projected 40 Time: 4.71.
2nd Team All SEC – I like big mean heavy loads in the middle…
3rd Round (2nd Pick) – Right Tackle
Anthony Davis*, Rutgers
Height: 6-6. Weight: 330.
Projected 40 Time: 5.24.
Big, strong guy… may not be there when we pick…
4th Round – Right Tackle
Chris Scott, Tennessee
Height: 6-5. Weight: 341.
Projected 40 Time: 5.43.
Big, strong guy… should be there when we pick…
7th Round – Defensive Tackle
DeMarcus Granger, Oklahoma
Height: 6-3. Weight: 330.
Projected 40 Time: 5.40.
He’s a medical basket case… but if he’s there… and he might be… we should take him…
December 23rd, 2009 at 11:55 am
ps… i know wisneiwski probably won’t come out…
but if he does, we should take him…
we could probably trade down 5 to 10 spots and still get him…
but i don’t think he would make it out of the 1st round…
this draft is very weak for centers…
getting a good one early is very important in my opinion…
December 23rd, 2009 at 11:56 am
Pete,
As always…I like your draft philosophy. I gotta start digging into it as well. Even though the Raiders will always draft that speedy skill player…studying the draft makes following the rest of the league a lot more interesting.
I still think we should go DT in the 1st round if the kid from Alabama is available.
Otherwise, I would get the best OT available in the 1st round.
I would do as you said, trade down and get an extra pick…but you know that cornerback from Florida will be on the board…
Sigh
December 23rd, 2009 at 11:56 am

=====================================================
He has the most talent of the bunch. He also stubbed his toe in Buffalo and wants to get back into the league.
This is the guy that could be one of those reclamation projects.
Let him compete with Gradkowski and let the best man win
I don’t think Gradkowski should be handed the job because he had a couple of effective games
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:00 pm
but once we know that Wisneiwski is going to stay in school…
i hate to say this… but we need to trade for a center or grab the best free agent… even an old farq for one year would be okay…
but center is killing us…
along with the entire right side of the line…
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:02 pm
yeah… the best competition next year should be between Losman and Kowski…
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:03 pm
i had Mt Cody as my No 1 pick in last yers draft…
but once his agent saw that…
he decided to have him stay in school…
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:04 pm
oh, speaking of awesome drafts… 2 years ago i said the Raiders should get Curtis Lofton in the second…
i hear my man is doing okay over there…
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:06 pm
thats why I wanted Mack last year….He coulda stepped right in,imo
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:10 pm
We should’ve drafted Alex Mack last year. You can tell Cable wanted him too. (sigh)
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Mack would have started here from game 1…
we let so much solid talent pass for a couple of ‘projects’, it’s frreakin’ crazy!
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:14 pm
First off.
2007 We should’ve drafted Adrian Peterson instead of Jamasterbate
FAIL!!!
2008 We should’ve traded down the fourth overall pick and selected Flacco or Ryan
FAIL!!!
2009 We should’ve selected Alex Mack as Center.
EPIC FAIL!!!
Imagine what our fortunes would be like had we done the thing anyone with half a functioning brain would do.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Mack would have been the logical choice. I know that Cable was really into him and other O’Linemen (remember him saying he wanted one of the ‘Cadillacs’).
We need to draft O-Line this year for sure.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Hell, our personel choices are so strange, i thought we picked up Shuggy Otis,
not Jeff Otis.
Figured, he and JR could’ve put a little blues act together…
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 pm
DHB I think is the worst pick I’ve ever seen in the 1st round by us.
I don’t think Jamarcus is because at least there was some logic behind it.
DHB from the moment he came aboard was thought of as a decoy because everyone knew he couldn’t catch.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:19 pm
What good is a ‘decoy’ WR,
when JR only looks to one side of the field anyway?
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:20 pm
For JaMeatloaf it will be a blue cheese act. All he thinks about is food. All of the play signals are
Skittles Toss Right
Double-Double Tight-End Seam
Hot Dogs running back screen
Now wonder why he has his mouth open, he’s salivating LOL
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:20 pm
2006: Matt Leinart
2007: Calvin Johnson
2008: Ryan Clady
2009: Michael Crabtree
hate all you want. thats who I would have selected each year in the draft. we’d be winning some games imo
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:21 pm

December 23rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Heard we’re installing a perfect play for JR,when he’s sacked and fumbles,
we’re calling it the ‘Holy Roller’…
Maybe he can get a Game Ball from Mangini this week…

December 23rd, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Wow – the other four 1st round WRs picked are LIGHTING THINGS UP!
Each have over 40 Receptions (compared to 9 DHB). Even Crabtree has over 40 receptions now after holding out till the 3rd/4th game!
Murphy’s a respectable 14th in receptions

Yeah, it’s true. Those were pretty much the concencus picks that we should take. All would have turned out much better except Leinart ain’t showing much.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:40 pm
From Jerrys twitter page
Rob Ryan called Kirk Morrison on his cell, telling him, “It’s bedlam. It’s on.” Then he hung up. 13 minutes ago

Leinart ain’t showing much.
***
He hasn’t really had that much of an opportunity since his rookie season. old man Warner has been tearing it up the past 3 seasons in AZ
It’s not like he’s getting outplayed by Gradkowski, Frye or Losman!
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:42 pm

======================================================
There were about 200 players we should have taken over DHB.
The other bad picks were at least consensus top 10, although Russell showed troubling signs of laziness prior to the draft that Davis ignored.
DHB was a consensus late 1st round to 3rd round pick. Then you add that he’s a receiver and that’s a further discount.
That draft pick was the worst pick ever because everyone knew he was a REACH. Troy Williamson & Ted Ginn Jr were at least a consensus top 15 picks.
Any number of players could have helped us this year.
The linebackers from USC, Raji, Harvin, Nicks, Britt…oh helll
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Charlie Frye dissapointed me against Denver as I thought he was the best qb we had based on past performances and camp, but he’s still better than Russell. Does Jamarcus even care that he’s the last choice?
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:45 pm
JaWalrus went 5/11 and fumbled in Dungver.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:45 pm
RaiderRockstar,
I always thought Andrew Walter got a bum deal here. But Lane Kiffin didn’t like him…and neither did Davis.
I think Walter could have succeeded if we didn’t revert back to the WCO.
Then the Raiders could have drafted Calvin Johnson
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Wow, I was upset last April…and I am still upset looking back!
DAvis jacked up that 1st round pick
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Mike Bush & Seabass beat the donks on Sunday.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Lost Man’s River by Peter Matthiessen was an excellent read. May Losman can be as good.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
I don’t have any faith in Jamarcus so I am hoping that one of the other QBs start.
Russell did play well for us down the stretch last year but this year just seems like he’s on some other planet. Even on the winning drive it wasn’t pretty…
Heck, if he does start all I can hope for (pray for) is that being here for a full season with the conditioning required will mean he plays closer to the level he played at the end of last year compared to this year.

Yes, it was VERY lucky! Look at the game before when he came in off the bench and how ugly it turned against the REDSKINS for christs sakes!
That’s why noone has confidence in him.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Schilens and Murphy should be our starters for years to come with JLH playing slot. Who would you rather have Rey Maualuga starting MLB or DHB a backup receiver? How about Cushing or Matthews at LB? How about a DL of Ellis Raji Kelly and Seymour?
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:50 pm
S&B: who did Norv Turner bring in to play QB?
Kerry Collins. then he drafted Andrew Walter to groom as future QB
Turner has a knack for helping young QB’s along.
However, QB’s like Collins/Walter are clearly not system fits under Kiffin or Cable – couldn’t agree more
Walter couldn’t stick as 2nd or 3rd string QB in New England either though. makes you wonder if the kid is even NFL material. I don’t think we ruined him, look at David Carr playing in NY!

Heck, imagine having Crabtree, Harvin or Percy in the lineup with Schillens, Murphy and JLH (if we HAD to pick a WR).
But, true, all these other picks were people that would’ve have been too “far out there”….although I think if we picked a LB last year people would’ve been upset too.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:54 pm
yes maverick. the Raiders defense shows up pretty regular this season under DC Marshall!
apart from the prevent defense that gave SD the victory in Week 1, Morrison matched up with Brandon Marshall in the first meeting with Dungver and Sam Williams covering Jason Witten on Thanksgiving …
Rob the slob is out and i’m glad.
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Yeah when Russell goes to the Pro Bowl I’ll leave him alone. He deserves to be scurtinized. Not spending the necessary time on the film room? As a QB? WOW
Every single good QB spends a lot of time watching film. Thost that don’t end up as Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Charlie Batch, Tim Couch, Matt Leinart, Tavaris Jackson, Rob Johnson, Todd Collins, Jason Cambell (half of the season), Tony Romo(half of the season), Jeff George, Marc Wilson, Cade McNown, etc.

December 23rd, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Is still advocate using more Power and mix it into zone blocking. A lot of teams will power and zone the weakside
December 23rd, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Frye should start no matter what and let him had the ball off and throw screens, swing flat passes to RB’s and to the TE’s and short curl and quick outs to WR’s.
The ball needs to come out of his hands fast and then take shots deep later.
Notice how when Frye swinged the ball to Bush in the flat in the Pony game, nobody covered him and Bush gained 15 yards?
Thats because teams automatically think our QB’s are going downfield and not even looking to go to their outlet backs in the flat.
More swing passes, more 5-10 yard TE hitches…..more curl routes and I would love to see more of Chaz and DMC in the slot to confuse defenses.

@Florida Pete;
I don’t believe that Davis(OT) out of Rutgers will make it out of Rd. 1, much less rd.3. I dig the wishful thinking, however. I live in Jersey, and have been watching Anthony Davis for the last 3 years. I’m telling you, he is a BEAST who is going to have a nice career in the NFL. I hope it’s for my(our) Raiders!!!
