Final: Browns 23, Raiders 9
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 27th, 2009 at 1:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Notes and observations from the Raiders-Browns game Sunday:
– Raiders follow big win with an awful loss for the fifth time. Scoring in those five losses _ opponents 142, Raiders 32.
– Raiders get in red zone again _ Charlie Frye picked again. Eric Wright gets the pick this time.
Raiders have 326 yards passing, 392 yards total offense. Three field goals. Should break 400 yards with one more possession for first time since 2005 _ and it will do them no good.
– They finish at 399 yards, barring late adjustments, Frye sacked with 33 seconds left as Browns will kill clock. Rob Ryan gets the Gatorade bath in snow flurries.
– Zach Miller gets taunting foul after 27-yard reception with Raiders driving. A ridiculous call. A pass interference call on Hank Poteat (makeup call?) gives Raiders the ball at the 2.
Raiders can’t get it in. Never once do they attempt to get Frye outside on a pass-run option.
Frye tosses third interception of game, this one to Eric Wright. May not have had it. Could be reversed.
– Phil Dawson’s 34-yard field goal puts Browns up 23-9, Raiders need pair of touchdowns in the last 8:31 and don’t have one today. A six-play, 31-yard drive following Brandon McDonald’s interception.
– Huge sack by Matt Roth against Frye after Raiders were moving well, Raiders come back with 11-yard Frye-to-Miller pass for third-and-9 at the Cleveland 24. Frye intercepted by McDonald, forcing pass to Higgins. Returns it 39 yards.
– Best downfield catch of the year by Johnnie Lee Higgins on throw from Frye. A 33-yard gain.

What will Fassell do? Cable benched Al’s main man and knocked out one of his moles. Bottom line is that Al Davis will not pay you if you don’t do things his way. All Fassell can do is lobby for something here and there. He will not run the football consistently. Only two coaches have done it, Gruden and Kiffin. Look at what happened to both of them. At some point you guys are going to have to start thinking realistically. I know it’s part of being a sports fan to dream. But at some point you’ve got to touch ground and just see things as they are. I’m out of here. I will not ruin my day arguing with you guys. Have to fix a tail light on my car, anyway. First off, Al DAvis is the root cause.
With that said. Get a real coach who knows who the best players are on the roster and doesn’t hold grudges and hold mediocre players on high.
Cable is the worst coach the Raiders have had during this 7 year run of futility

– Frye’s INTs basically lost that game. Some really terrible ones too. The first one came inside our own 20 and basically gave them a 7. The last 2 came inside the red zone and took points off the board for us. Not to mention he threw 2 more in the red zone but was bailed out by the defender not getting his 2nd foot down and a questionable P.I. call on the other one. He was inches away from throwing 5 INTs, 4 in the red zone and 1 deep in our own territory. Some of them were really terrible too. The first one was atrocious. How does he not see that defender. He also talked all about this stuff he learned from Holmgren and Co. in Seattle. What? How to stare down a receiver and telegraph a pass?
– Bottom line: we outgained them by 107 yards and lost by 2 TDs. What does that tell you?
– Also, the officials were pretty atrocious but at least a few of the bad calls went against the Browns. But the taunting on Zach Miller was a joke. The first unsportsmanlike flag on Seymour was a joke which led to the second one and helped key that Browns TD drive. The PI call on Murphy was a complete joke but turned out not to matter since he dropped the pass. There was one key PI call on Chris Johnson where the receiver basically jammed his hand under CJ’s arm to be able to push off again and then left it there once he saw the ball was uncatchable. There was a questionable holding call on Green that wiped out a big 3rd-down conversion early in the game. I’d love to see what Routt and Tony Stewart did to get ejected. I’d be shocked if one or both were not completely ridiculous calls. I guess that’s why this crew was scheduled to do the 3-11/5-9 game.
– How does Cable not call one running play on 1st and goal from the 3 on that drive that ended on a 4 and out? There was still plenty of time left there. Frye was shaky all game and you’ve got McFadden who’s usually going to beat the defense to the corner and Bush who can bull it into the end zone.

Cable is an idiot.
I thought he had no business trying to call timeouts at the end of the first half on D. 10-6, let them run the ball and concede and go to the half. Maybe call a timeout on 3rd or something, and he is using them right after 1st down. Kirk misses a tackle on 3rd and 18 (awful) and lets the back get the first AND OUT OF BOUNDS and than all hell breaks lose and the team falls apart.
And not one run after the PI in the end zone? Not one draw to a guy who averages 5 yards a carry? Who does this?

Anyone who says we don’t need to draft O line in the upcoming draft, doesn’t have a clue.
There is absolutely no depth on the O-line and it showed today big time.
After this game, everyone has to be questionning Cable’s coaching capabilities… 2 ejections, the Personal Foul drive, and the play calling. It was a cold weather game in Cleveland in December, run the dam ball. Again I go back to O-line. The Oline got hammered today by Rob RYAN’s defense. (a side note, how many blitzes did Cleveland call at the end of the second half?)
And finally ask question for JaMarcus, how does it feel to know that you’re riding the bench behind Charlie Frye?
Go Raiders.

Because the run defense has been bad for 7 years. Nothing more to be said about that.
The offense is inept because a combination of poor Quarterbacking and the coaches reluctance to use Michael Bush.
Had Fargas been healthy, Cable would have ran the ball 25x for 65 yds. That would have been enough to win the game today…

Morrison had a n all too typically bad day over running plays, getting locked onto by linemen and washed out of plays.
His dumb azz audibles cost us time and again today.
He SUCKS period.
I don’t care if he has 100+ tackles, most of them are 5-7 yds down field.
We’ve got the offensive “weapons” in the last few drafts, lets see if we give them the linemen to let them realize their potential.
Given the risks of taking expensive O linemen in the draft and or FA, I say keep Cable and the ZBS one more year. Give DMC and Bush a FB that can stay upright and BLOCK and an interior.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Vegas,
You’re right, there are tonnes of holes, but I just don’t think Cable is the guy. This team has some talent, but I think it’s getting spoiled under Cable. (T. Howard, Schillens, McFaddon, Myers, Miller, Seymour, Branch, Huff, Asomougha as examples)
Cable may have been in the right place at the right time to even have the job. And the biggest proof is the O-line, his O-line.
The real question is, is it worth it to go through another Coaching change. Could a new coach reach the #1 overall draft pick? Can anyone reach Russell? (besides Ice Cube, what a joke that was during the preseason! It is funny being a Raider fan.)
But losing to Rob Ryan and the Cleveland Browns, (heck losing to Derek Anderson) stings alot.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Lawton and Russell would not, could not make anyone elses team or practice squad.

Ryan only needed 1 week 2 figure out Bush.If anyone thinks 1 player is gonna turn this around, besides Gradkowski, you dont know what you looking at.Langston Walker, the REAL HERO in Bush’s 133yards last week, went down in the 1st quarter.Oh Bush never did anything after that
=========================
The reason Bush did so well last week was the jumbo package with Pears, Walker and Henderson lined up on the left side. They also had success with the fabled and under used 2 TE set with Miller and Myers. Myers was out with a concussion I think.
Chris Morris should’ve played center and shuffled Satele to guard. Morris is incapable of getting a push in the ground game at guard.
With Walker’s and Myer’s injuries, the jumbo and 2 TE sets were off the table early.

In fact, Tony Stewart, who could’ve played in those 2 TE sets ( he can’t block) was ejected…

Did anyone notice the difference when Rob Ryan is able to unleash the blitz? Coulda been us. Im not saying Rob is great, but he’s better than Marshall, who looks good sometimes because of the talent on defense, not scheme.I never understood why Cable got the job over Rob at Head coach.Again, not saying Rob is great, but much better than Cable and/or Marshall. He deserved the chance more than Cable.Resume is much better. What has Cable ever done? Rob’s character fit out team, and our team would kill/die for that coach.Look how he was recieved today by the players.I’m sick of us hiring offensive line coached to head coach the team. These guys (bugle, shell, cable) cant even get a coordinator job,but we give them the keys to the car.WE CANT SCORE TOUCHDOWNS! I don’t care about wins/losses.We cant find the endzone more than once a game.Thats been the story for the last several years.WTF

And when I say I don’t care about wins/losses, I mean that everyone is pleased with our wins, but they lose sight of the fact that we could barely score to win those games (outside of one hell of a 4th quarter). Its mostly defense/turnovers and field goals. When we lose, We still don’t score.I wouldnt be so pissed if we showed some life in our losses.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
The D line needs a few more solid bodies. Shaungnessy looks great. Howard, who they converted to LB, looks good too. Warren is nearing the end of the line. Tommy Kelly is wildly inconsistent. We just need a new anchor and some depth in the rotation.
LB are just ok as a group. It might be a good idea to let Morrison walk as long as we address the position, although we never really do.
DB could use another corner. Tyvon Branch looks like a keeper. Mike Mitchell hasn’t exactly set the world on fire but I could see him coming around. Huff just can’t make crucial tackles, a deadly trait in a free saftey.
O-line is very physically weak. We need depth. We need more talent.
RB is ok. Bush is our best back. McFadden is amazingly ineffective.
WR is ok. DHB has done absolutely nothing, looked awful and is a huge component of the entire team struggling. The “experts” were absolutely correct and he is a bust. Schilens is solid. Zack Miller is great. Higgins has lost his mojo on KR and is just a streaky WR.
QB Russell should be cut and that money used to sign the best FA we can get. Bruce bring back. Frye, thanks cya. Draft a QB late rounds and sign a journeyman.
Keep Cable. I’m not crazy about his offense but with no QB this team is a few years away.
Draft both lines and a QB late.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Osi umen-whats his name is a free agent after this season the team should take a look at him, also I hat to say it but after todays game I wouldn’t be surprised if tom cable is done as our head coach I like him but the production on O isn’t there. I know we can alot more out of this offense than what tom has has, the mis-management of our rb’s and wr speed.): Hopefully al does the right thing and give up some control and bring chucky back. Because I believe chucky would be able to do wonders with the players we have on this team.

The Raiders were penalized big time today not only by the refs but by their coaching staff. The game plan today was atrocious.
Coach Cable stated that many games in the past the Raiders could not establish the running game because they fell well behind in points to be effective. well, that statement does not hold fast today. The Raiders had ample opportunities to esablish the run today!!!!! On several occasions, Raiders had ideal field position and down and distance to establish the run. Today the Raider’s coaching staff chose (primarily), to win this game passing with a 3rd string Quarterback. The coaching decisions were abhorrent and a detriment to the Raiders success today and I can’t say that enough!!!!
The Raiders need both of the best receivers at the same time on the field as primary targets. The 2 best receivers unequivocally are schilens and Murphy.Higgins at best is a 3 tier target and I feel he would not be a starter on any other NFL team. Do you remember J.Porter and D. Gabriel? The truth hurts and it is hurting the Raiders. If something could have been learned from the Raiders coaching staff, it should have been, if you give the defense an average offense the Raiders can win close games. The Raiders coaches swallowed an ostrich egg today without the chaser.

The Oline just really makes it hard for us to compete. Sorry Vegas, but Oline HAS to be the pick in rd 1 and 2, IMO.
Best available Oline stud in Rd 1 to shore up the right side. It’s a flat out disaster from C to RT. And Morris at G just doesn’t work. He’s not even reliable as a backup OG. Why the fugg did we cut McQuistan again?
Center in Rd 2!

For every step Cable takes forward, he seems to take 2 steps back. That defensive penalty sequence the basically led to Cleve going up 17-6 was laughable! ANOTHER reason why Cable needs to take the headset off to be able to manage GAME situations and get in someone’s face.
Adding an Asst Head Coach/OC is the only way Cable should be allowed to stay.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
M,
You could see an argument for upgrading the RB position in 08, and the WR position last year. There was at least an argument. With those 2 positions addressed, no other real argument other than maybe MLB.

This game showed the decisions that need ot be made to improve the Raiders offense for next year.
1.Cable: On the plus side, the player
December 27th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Vegas,
I like Howard and Scott at OLB. Like them a lot. And I think they will be much better in year 2 of the Marshall plan, as my man SnB likes to call it.
MLB? You know I wanted Maulauga last year in Rd 1, lol. My head just tells me that there is a plan for Ricky Brown in the middle, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Norris and Dixon develop. You won’t hear my complaining at all if we could add a ridiculous play making LB to the middle of this defense. Just don’t think it’s going to happen.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
A play making LB that leads the league in tackles isn’t squat compared to a pair of DT’s that can stuff the run at the line of scrimage.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Chris Johnson thinks he’s better than he is, lol. He’s a good corner, but he really needs to spend another summer with Prime. Seems like he really gets beat a lot when he tries to press. Would like to see him switch it up a bit and just play more positioning. I think that is going to come from film room work.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Oh man!!
That was pretty sorry. I guess Cable figured we could bring in the 3rd string QB and throw the ball all over the field.
Hey McFadden, the entire left side of the field is wide open, make sure you bury your head in the back of the gaurd for a 2 yard gain!
And why, oh why are we starting a FB on KO returns??
I really thought that once Routt got tossed we’d have a shot.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:42 pm

December 27th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Here’s my campaign for the next Raider QB. Pick-up Troy Smith a RFA from the Ravens. We may have to compensate with a 3rd or 5th round pick because he’s a restricted agent. Let him, Gradkowski, Frye & Losman fight it out in camo to see who emerges as the starter.
Troy Smith would have been the starter for the Ravens except for an injury at the wrong time. He’ll come to Oakland because he wants to be a starter – the way it should be. He’s a Heisman winner and has demonstrated great skill & ability. He’s not super tall but he’s still taller than Drew Brees. He’s extremely mobile but prefers pocket passing. He’s got a strong ACCURATE arm and he does have touch. Pick him up and spend all our draft picks on OT, MLB, OC, OG, DT, DE & CB.
I predict that Morrison & Rhoutt, both FA will be elsewhere next year.
December 27th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

If that was cables pick he needs to be fired for that alone.

What a crock of S#!T……
December 27th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Morrison can go… I am okay with that, he is not mean enough to play mlb for the nation anyway.
December 27th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
McFadden was drafted to add a weapon to the offense, not a 200 yd back per se.
It’s as clear a day that McFadden should be good for 1 or 2 TDs a game. Cable is just not using him right. Why don’t we see him go in motion to the slot instead of the outside? How about getting him matched up against a LB or S?
So many examples of how this guy could be used other than HB dives. I would NEVER call a play for him to run up the middle. Want to get him the ball up the middle, call a middle screen.
December 27th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
You can make a great argument over what side of the trnch we should draft. Thats what we need trench help on both sides, and a MLB….

Man BSPN is ripping the Colts organization right now for pulling Manning up 15-10 in the 3rd qtr.
^^^^^^^^^
Probably the stupidest, ga yest decision I have ever seen. Coach Caldwell made a dumb decision taking away a chance at history from his players and especially at home??
I could see Caldwell start pulling guys if his team was killing the Jets or if the Jets were killing them….but up by 5 in the 3rd and all they really need is one more TD then they could have pulled the starters up by 2 scores.
Lame a$$ decision by Caldwell and the whole Colt organization. The players and fans were pissed.

by the way… half the guys that we think are good are becoming free agents soon…
so how is that we aren’t patient???
we are about to start rebuilding all over again…

Exactly…and sobering too. A lot of folks don’t realize that the holes are numerous and probably can’t be fixed in a year:
We need:
QB
RB – (if we stupidly trade Michael Bush)
FB
RT
RG
C
LG – Gallery with multiple injuries, back surgery?
UT
NT
MLB
SLB – Does T. Howard come back?
NB
FS – Huff has to restructure $5million
KR
Gents…that my friends is a restruturing that hasn’t even started yet

I have all the love and respect for him but its time to go….
LTR NATION…..

Tantrum Time….I demand the Raiders be better and playoff bound …NOW …NOW….NOW….I know better than anyone how to run some one else’s football team….I demand it my way…or I will ridicule the Owner , the Coach, or the Players. …I want a winner NOW…..I’m too immature to realize or comprehend that the NFL is entertainment….NO… I pathetically build a large portin of my life around the success and failure of an NFL team…I shoot my mouth off inside of my social circle about my devotion to an NFL team and then have to live with the dispair and humiliation of facing those people through out the week when it loses.

Thec07…how many coaches in that 7 years…come on you can count that high….with every new coach the “rebuilding” process begin anew …implementing a new offensive philosophy and gaining the trust of the players to succeed within those new systems…so stay with me here Eistien…it hasn’t been a 7 year rebuilding process…..by the way thec07…who turns your computer on for you?
December 27th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Wow, who invited this clown?
SC, you are not seriously saying that Cable just needs time to develop are you?
December 27th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Who invited you?
December 27th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
I never said anything one way or another about firing Cable…don’t read between the lines…your reading comprehension isn’t that good.
December 27th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
We lose week after week with play calling.Cable sucks at using our players the way they should be used from the quaterback down.We need Gruden back here.Come on Al get us are coach back.We want to win.
December 27th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Hate to point this out but JRuss may have a point about showing up early to work.
Our O-Line sucks.
Our Play-calling sucks.
Our game planning sucks.
Our use of personnel sucks.
What the hell is Cable and others doing at headquarters so damn early everyday?
December 27th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Free donuts!
December 27th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Bruce woulda won this one. That being said, I don’t him running around on two bad knees like an octogenarian at his sonny’s barmitzva, only to be ko’d permanently by t. suggs or haloti.
Ravens need the win for the playoffs. 5-11. sigh.
December 27th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
I can’t believe Lechler didn’t flick that 61 yard FG attempt between his legs to Seabass so that he could run it in for the TD!
What was Cable thinking???
December 27th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
I mean, it’s worked for 2 years in practice!
December 27th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
SK,
try again. No way Russell miss or late for that.
December 27th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Poor kid.
December 27th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
45 pass attempts
17 rush attempts
WoW!
December 27th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
1st and goal from the 2:
pass to the left corner, incomplete
pass to the left corner, incomplete
pass to the left corner, incomplete
I know, we got ‘em now. Mwahahahaa
pass to the right corner, NO WAY, incomplete??
December 27th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Still, my favorite so far this year is bringing in JP Losman 3 days after signing him and running a pass play on 3rd and 10 in a 2 down situation when the o-line hadn’t pass protected since practice on Wednesday.
Now that’s classic Cable!
December 27th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Here’s what I’d like to see on our O-line:
New OLT, Gallery, New OC, Walker, Henderson. Restructure the line for POWER BLOCKING – no more ZBS. If we can’t find the right OLT then take the best ORT and leave Henderson at OLT.
