Halftime: Browns 17, Raiders 6

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 27th, 2009 at 11:40 am in Oakland Raiders.

Notes and observations from the second quarter of the Raiders-Browns game:

– Raiders get in position for 61-yard field goal attempt with one second left in the half. He nails it. Offense gets back three points in nice drive after defense embarrasses itself with a gift penalty-filled touchdown drive.

– Browns get first down as Michael Huff misses tackle on draw play. Now Browns can kill clock without fear of Raiders getting the ball back.

Flags flying as Raiders, Browns, mix it up. Both teams participating, but Richard Seymour gets an additional 15 yards and Browns could end up with a scoring chance.

Stanford Routt ejected for a head butt, and Derek Anderson finds Mohamed Massequoi for a 19-yard touchdown pass to culimnate the Raiders most shameful sequence of the season. They trail 17-6 with 18 seconds left in the half.

– Another costly offensive line penalty _ this one from Chris Morris for a takedown on Frye rollout. Sack follows immediately. Ruins Raiders drive which started at the 1 and had been approaching midfield.

Third-and-24 pass to Murphy well short of first down, forcing Shane Lechler punt. Cleveland hold pins Browns deep in own territory.

– Anderson converts third-and-8 with Greg Ellis covering Brian Robiskie. Thomas Howard holds up in coverage, breaks up sideline pass to Evan Moore. Anderson misfires on third-and-12 _ now Raiders will be in their own territory.

Hiram Eugene jumps offsides on Cleveland fake punt. Would have had ball at the 50 after incomplete pass. Browns down it at the 1

– Fair catch interference by Cleveland puts Raiders in great position for more points starting at the Browns’ 30. Rob Ryan dials up a blitz, Frye sacked on third-and-short inside the 10. Sebastian Janikowski coverts from 34 yards, making it 10-6.

– Browns start at own 9. Raidres need a stop here. Terrific defensive series highlighted by Warren’s 5-yard stuff of Harrison on second down. Three-and-out delivered.

It took Frye this long to get in the game because he is our worst QB. He just studies alot and knows what to do, he just can’t actually do it. Sort of like Cable is our smartest and most prepared o-lineman but he can’t go out there and execute.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Is Tom Cable fighting for his job today?

    He should be!

  • djohnnyg

Oakland has had 7 yrs. to fix the run D and still rank 28th in the league.

I’m convinced if we switched uniforms with New England the Raiders would STILL find a way to rank last, or near last in run defense.

  • djohnnyg

Watch the film and tell me if you think Kirk Morrison is not the biggest problem of the defense.

He never knows where he is. You will almost always find him in the opponets backfield holding his arms up and looking lost as the opposing running back trots gleefully down the field.

  • Tonio

dmc is not a power between the tackles runner… we gotta know that by now

  • JB

Realistically, we can’t expect that much from our O-line. Morris & Satelle – back-ups at best. Carlisle – over the hill & long of tooth. Green, the backup to a backup. There’s just no hope with this crappy line.

  • 16yearsold16yearfan

we might as well just see what jamarcus or at least losman can do because frye sucks and this game is over

  • djohnnyg

Never thought i’d say this but BRING RUSSELL IN.

I maean what the hell do we have to lose…Frye sucks even worse than JaBustus.

  • GForce21

Doubt Losman knows enough of the offense to play

  • JB

Does anyone else get the feeling that we don’t really have a game plan for today? The level of play certainly substantiates that.

  • lefty12

2 scores down and you geniuses are conceding the game.what’s worse-the team or some of the people on here who call themselves fans?pathetic!

  • AddaToon

Anyone calling to bring Russell in just go jump off a bridge with Davis

  • 24

The Raiders came to play the Browns today. I don’t think they expected to face themselves instead. No matter what the outcome is…this has been a terrible game.

  • lefty12

i bet he knows more than Russell.

  • 24

Has any team actually personal fouled someone into the end zone the way we helped the Browns do it?

  • 504 Raider

Think about it fellas, the good things others rave about Frye are:

    -good with the feet
    -smart, will be coach someday

He won’t be around much longer.

    2010 Raiders QBs (alphabetical)
    Gradkowski, Losman, Russell.

  • djohnnyg

    62 #:

Why, because Frye is doing so well?

  • 16yearsold16yearfan

lefty it doesnt take a genius to know that the raiders rarely come back from more than a one score defecit and just because you’re a fan doesn’t mean you have to ignore the truth about your team

  • 24

Cable really should have focused on our own running game more throughout the game considering we’re playing Rob Ryan’s poor run defense but that would have made too much sense.

  • djohnnyg

    24,

ONLY the Raiders could do that.

UNDISCIPLINED CHAOS is what Cable brought to the table today.

He’s making ZERO progress with this mess of a team and deserves to be fired NOW!

  • AddaToon

The offense doesn’t react to Russell…strangely neither does our Defense.
That play where Frye got sacked with the ball in his right hand — Russell would have fumbled that, guaranteed.
Have you been watching the same Russell?

  • lefty12

so because it rarely happens you’ve already given up?pathetic!

  • JB

The type of play calling does not lend itself to catch-up football. The play calling has been so as not to lose rather than to win it.

Our only hope to win this game is to open things up. Don’t know if Cable can handle that.

  • AddaToon

    djohnnyg,

russell wouldn’t have made that throw to JLH right there.

  • djohnnyg

Should Cable be kept on after this disaster of a game against the Cleveland freaking Browns?

    I don’t think so.

  • AddaToon

pitch it to McFaddenn… go figure?

  • djohnnyg

    74,

I agree. He would not have.

  • JB

JLH surprised me on that one.

  • AddaToon

Frye can usually throw a catchable ball… Russell throws and receivers get concussions.

  • AddaToon

was that 3 play actions in a row?

  • GForce21

JLH best play in a long time, tackling McDonald.

  • 24

    New Post btw.

  • AddaToon

bad throw by Frye but Higgins gave his QB no help there either. all around suck.

  • djohnnyg

    Game.

Nice throw Frye. Russell couldn’t have done it better himself.

  • djohnnyg

    Frye sucks. Plain and simple.

  • djohnnyg

Way to show Cleveland what they missed out on loser.

  • djohnnyg

    C.Johnson can’t even cover a rookie…jeeez.

  • AddaToon

are the Raiders gonna draft Haden?

  • AddaToon

everytime McFadden runs up the middle an angel loses its wings.

  • djohnnyg

    Screw Cable.

Couldn’t even string two freaking wins together, and against sub par teams to boot.

    This team has NOT improved.

    Cable is DONE.

  • djohnnyg

Ha. What a joke. A fullback returning kickoffs???

    Goodbye Cable!

  • AddaToon

    Is Mike Holmgrem available?

  • AddaToon

ahhh the rob ryan prevent D…. brings back some good memories.
