Frye will start season finale

Raiders coach Tom Cable said Monday Bruce Gradkowski was “doubtful” for the season finale, has no intention of starting JaMarcus Russell and expects Charlie Frye to open at quarterback when they host the Baltimore Ravens in the season finale at the Coliseum.

I’m very sorry for you Vegas that you will not get the utter joy of watching Ray Lewis beat the ever loving laziness out of the sloth #2.And I can deeply sympathize with you all the live-long day too.
Man if Ray Lewis can ever do anything to redeem his reputation,he could scare #2 into really trying.After Lewis ripps Frye to little pieces,well we may just ALL get our wish.Its only a little morsel at this point but a juicy morsel none-the-less =)

Take out the emotion, and look at the QB situation…
Gradkowski: We already have an idea of what he can do. Did he earn a new contract? Absolutely. A “big” one? Absolutely not. A nice medium one would do. But, he shouldn’t play this game…we already know he’s a gamer.
Frye: We’ve seen what he can do…and know he’s not the under-fire answer at the position. Since we already know that, we need to move on.
Losman: Not fair to him, or the team, to expect him to do anything unless it’s an emergency. Ride the pines until camp, JP.
JaMarcus: This is the one last chance for JaMarcus to have a positive feeling going into the off-season. The team stands as much of a chance of winning with JaMarcus as they do with Frye…and it could be Jamarcus’s chance to throw down the gauntlet to Grad, JP, and a yet-to-be-named Free Agent, that he isn’t going to go away so easily.
For the sake of potential development, without diminishing the team’s chances to be competitive in the game, I say it’s time to put JaMarcus out there one more time.

Gradkowski didn’t EARN anything. 3 games is not enough to make a decision on a guy that’s already bounced around to 4 teams in his short career. The only thing he’s earned is a chance to legitimately compete for the starting job.
Frye should be a coach next year or 3rd string. Good to have a guy like that around.
Losman: I’d give him a shot next week if Gradkowski can’t go. Let’s see what he can do….He’s my choice to start next year pending training camp.
Russell: He needs to shut it down. No benefit comes from playing him. He’s clearly not ready and it would be a waste to play him if they are going to cut him anyway. He’s had his chances and threw them away in spectacular fashion. I personally don’t think he deserves another chance. Handed a starting job and treating the team, the league, the black QBs before him that paved a way, Davis, the fans and his own alma mater and family with a tremendous amount of disrespect and indifference.
Should Russell come back? Only if restructured and only if he’s dedicated 100%!
BTW, I would bring in Chad Pennington or Jason Campbell

John Fox and Marty Hurney can return to Carolina

After two straight convincing wins, Panthers coach John Fox is off the hot seat for now.
Tom Sorensen of the Charlotte Observer reports that Fox, G.M. Marty Hurney, and Fox’s entire coaching staff will be “offered the opportunity” to return to the Panthers in 2010. Fox will not be offered a contract extension.
Fox is reportedly due $6 million in 2010, the final year of his current deal. Sorensen writes that a potential lockout after the 2010 season could be a factor in the decision to keep Fox.
The 7-8 Panthers face many big offseason questions, like at quarterback and what do do with Julius Peppers. (The most likely Peppers solution: waving goodbye.)
Left unsaid is whether Fox will definitely take the “opportunity” to return as a lame duck coach. With so much money due and no freedom to entertain job offers, we have to assume he will be back.

Jaguars-Patriots one-liners

The Jaguars defense was unable to come up with an answer for the Patriots passing game en route to a 35-7 loss.
In the wake of the loss, Don Banks of SI.com writes that the Jaguars “turned out to be who we thought they were,” i.e. a team without playoff makeup.
Jaguars QB David Garrard threw a pair of interceptions, but coach Jack Del Rio said that the loss can’t be put solely on his shoulders.
Said Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew, “It hurts more because you go into the game so high on your team and yourself and you want to go out and show the world what you can do and the last three weeks we pretty much laid an egg. That is the toughest part about it. You’re supposed to play your best ball in December and we’re not playing our best ball at all.”
Del Rio chose to go for a first down on a fourth-and-one from the Jaguars 35 in the first quarter, largely because he didn’t trust his defense’s ability to make stops.
Patriots QB Tom Brady was 23 of 27 for 267 yards and four touchdowns.
Patriots WR Wes Welker had 13 catches for 138 yards, tying the NFL record for most games with 10+ catches in one season and breaking his own franchise record for most catches in a season.
The Patriots secondary made a plethora of big plays, including interceptions by S Brandon Meriweather and CB Shawn Springs.
After RB Lawrence Maroney was benched for fumbling, the Patriots turned to RB Sammy Morris and he responded with 95 yards on 12 carries.
Patriots RB Fred Taylor also saw action against his former team and finished with 35 yards rushing in his first game action since early October.

Broncos-Eagles one-liners

The Broncos couldn’t come up with a stop on third-and-25 in the fourth quarter and wound up with a 30-27 loss to the Eagles.
After a 14-point comeback brought them within a field goal in the second half, the Broncos couldn’t muster more than three points on their final four possessions of the game.
The Broncos trailed 10-0 before they were able to find a way to get a first down on offense.
Broncos S Brian Dawkins said he didn’t come out for pregame warmups because the emotions involved in his return to Philadelphia would have left him with nothing in the tank for the game.
Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil had two sacks and a forced fumble.
Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin had six catches for 92 yards, none bigger than his 27-yard grab to set up the winning field goal late in the fourth quarter.
On the Eagles’ first seven possessions they rang up 335 yards; on their final seven possessions they only gained 59 yards.
Rookie S Macho Harris had a big hand in helping the Eagles lose their big lead by taking a penalty on an interception return and then fumbling on a kickoff to set up a Broncos touchdown.
Eagles RB Brian Westbrook returned from a concussion to play about 25 snaps and ran for 32 yards on nine carries.
Eagles K David Akers made the game-winning field goal and an earlier make set a franchise mark for most points scored by the team in a single season.

Jamaal Jackson will miss the rest of the season

Philadelphia’s 30-27 victory over the Broncos kept the Eagles very much alive for a playoff bye, but it came with a heavy price.
Starting center Jamaal Jackson will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, according to coach Andy Reid.
Philadelphia’s offensive line has steadily improved during the season, and Jackson was perhaps its most consistent piece. He started 71 straight games at the position.
On Sunday when Jackson was hurt, Nick Cole moved from right guard to center and Max Jean-Gilles replaced Cole. Jean-Gilles has starting experience, but Cole has never started at center.

Cowboys-Redskins one-liners

The Cowboys recorded their first shutout in 98 games and clinched a playoff spot with a 17-0 win in Washington.
Said Cowboys NT Jay Ratliff, who had two sacks, “I think we did a great job, but at the same time, I don’t think any of us are satisfied. There’s a lot that we can do better. We haven’t done our best.”
While his stats weren’t eye-catching, Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News thinks RB Felix Jones showed why he’s such a valuable member of the Cowboys offense.
Cowboys QB Tony Romo had his interception-less streak snapped at 167 attempts, but threw for 286 yards and a touchdown.
The absence of special teams coach Joe DeCamillis didn’t result in any breakdowns in the kicking game.
The loss means that the Redskins will go winless against their NFC East rivals for the first time in 14 seasons.
Said Redskins coach Jim Zorn, “The hardest thing for me is to watch our team lose to that team because of the division rivalry and too many blue jerseys having a good time in our stadium.”
Redskins S Reed Doughty had his first career interception but left the game with a sprained ankle suffered during the return.
Redskins DT Albert Haynesworth had a quiet game after a controversy-filled week.
Sunday night’s game was likely the final home contest for several members of the Redskins.

Jaguars need to win, and need four teams to lose

The Jacksonville Jaguars have one of the more complex paths to the playoffs among the many AFC teams fighting for a wild card berth.
But to simplify it, it breaks down like this: The Jaguars need to win at Cleveland on Sunday, and they need at least four out of five other AFC wild card contenders to lose.
The NFL announced today that the Jaguars will make the playoffs if they win and any of the following five things happen:
1. The Steelers, Ravens, Broncos and Texans all lose.
2. The Steelers, Ravens, Broncos and Jets all lose.
3. The Steelers, Ravens, Texans and Jets all lose.
4. The Steelers, Broncos, Texans and Jets all lose.
5. The Jets, Broncos, Texans and Ravens all lose.
None of those five different paths to the playoffs is particularly promising. But if the Jaguars beat the Browns on Sunday, the NFL is telling them there’s a chance.

Texans need upset, help from two teams

Houston’s three-game winning streak, including Sunday’s victory in Miami, may have taken coach Gary Kubiak off the hot seat.
Earning the team’s first playoff berth will be more difficult.
The Texans have to beat New England in a game we suspect the Patriots will play to win.
If Houston wins, they need two of the following three teams to lose or tie: Jets, Ravens, and Broncos. All three teams are likely to be favored, so Houston needs a few breaks.
The Texans play at 1PM ET, while the Jets, Ravens, and Broncos all play later. So a victory over New England will keep Houston’s hopes alive for at least three extra hours.
It seems odd, but the Steelers-Dolphins game has zero impact on Houston’s chances to make the playoffs.

Dolphins need to win and hope for lots of help

The Miami Dolphins’ path to the playoffs is simple and straightforward.
But that doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen.
The NFL announced today that the Dolphins will get to the playoffs if they win and the Jets, Ravens, Texans and Jaguars all lose.
It’s certainly not impossible for the Dolphins to beat the Steelers on Sunday, or for the Jets to lose to the Bengals, the Ravens to lose to the Raiders, the Texans to lose to the Patriots or the Jaguars to lose to the Browns.
But all of those things to happen on the same day? Not likely.
Ultimately, any team counting on both the Raiders and the Browns to win on the same day probably shouldn’t be counting on getting to the playoffs. The Dolphins’ loss on Sunday didn’t mathematically eliminate them, but it’s fairly safe to say they’re not going to the playoffs.

Brady wants to “carry over” strong week

Tom Brady says the Patriots are coming off their best week of practice all season and “one of” the team’s best games. He wants to keep that momentum going next week in Houston.
“You don’t want to make it seem like one week we’re a team that looks like we did yesterday, and the next week we’re a team that looks like we played against the Bills,” Brady said on WEEI, as transcribed by Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.
“I’d love to see us go down there and put together the same type of effort,” Brady said.
We wouldn’t be surprised to see Brady play four quarters. Bill Belichick faced nearly the exact same decision in Week Seventeen of the ‘05 and ‘06 seasons. In both cases, the Patriots had the division clinched but no chance at a bye. There was little at stake.
In 2005, Matt Cassel replaced Brady in the first half of a narrow loss to the Dolphins.
In 2006, Brady played until victory was assured over a streaking Titans team. The difference in approach may have had to do with how well the Patriots were playing.
The 2005 team was on a four-game winning streak. The 2006 team had won two straight, but had lost to Miami 21-0 in Week Fourteen.
It’s just an educated guess, but we suspect Belichick feels similar to Brady. The 2009 team looks like one that needs to improve on Sundays before sitting anyone. Injured players like Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren will clearly rest up for the playoffs, but Brady may just get his wish.
Brady playing the whole game doesn’t mean the Patriots will prevail — their best road win thus far is Buffalo — but his presence certainly won’t help Houston’s playoff hopes.

Steelers’ playoff scenarios aren’t that bad

Two weeks ago, when the Pittsburgh Steelers were 6-7, it looked like a virtual certainty that the defending Super Bowl champions wouldn’t return to the playoffs.
But now the Steelers are 8-7, and after the NFL released the official playoff scenarios today, Pittsburgh’s chances actually look pretty good.
The league office announced today that the Steelers will make the playoffs if they beat the Dolphins on Sunday and any of the following three things happen:
1. The Texans and Jets both lose or tie.
2. The Texans and Ravens both lose or tie.
3. The Jets, Ravens and Broncos all lose or tie.
The first of those three scenarios is the most likely to happen, and the biggest problem for the Steelers is that they don’t know whether the Texans’ and Jets’ opponents — the Patriots and Bengals — will be trying to win on Sunday. As Mike Florio noted in the Week 16 Morning Aftermath, the Bengals have a dilemma on their hands heading into Week 17.
If they’re trying to win, the Patriots would likely be favored to win at Houston and the Bengals might be favored to win at New York. But since the Patriots and Bengals have both clinched their divisions, they might decide to rest key players on Sunday and have them healthy for the first round of the playoffs a week later.
So, if you’re a Steelers fan, you need to root for your team to beat the Dolphins. And you need to root for Bill Belichick and Marvin Lewis to go for a win.

Browns say Raiders played dirty

After the Cleveland Browns beat the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, a few Browns players accused the Raiders of playing dirty.
Specifically, quarterback Derek Anderson said the Raiders were taking cheap shots at running back Jerome Harrison on the ground.
“They were beating on [Harrison] when he was on the ground and our guys aren’t going to let that happen,” Anderson said, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “There were some unnecessary things going on.”
The officials seemed to agree with the Browns, and the Raiders were flagged several times. But Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour, who picked up two personal foul penalties, said he thinks the officials may have been predisposed to thinking the Raiders were playing dirty.
“The referee was behind him and didn’t see what happened,” Seymour said. “The film will show it all. He’s human and mistakes happen. I think everyone just jumped in. A little spark started the whole thing. It seemed that everything was directed toward us. That’s the Raider mystique.”

Charlie Frye…good luck, my man. Grads needs to just stay in his pajamas.
If Frye does well/stays healthy, and JaMarcus doesn’t play in this game, he may never play in another regular season game for the Raiders, ever.
Barring an injection of football-instinct, and the installation of a turbocharger, JaMarcus might not be good enough to play for any team.
One thing is for sure…the team will not just be handed-over to the guy, no matter how much he’s making, next year. If he isn’t “all that” coming out of OTA’s and Training Camp, he’ll just be another never-was on the bench.
Time for a football player at QB for the Oakland Raiders.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns claimed the Raiders engaged in some foul play on Sunday, beating on Jerome Harrison after he was down and former Brown Gerard Warren twisting Alex Mack’s hands and fingers.
“[Warren and I] were getting after each other the whole first half and later in the game he tried to throw me and just started twisting my hands and fingers and I didn’t like that,” said Mack, who took a swing at Warren.
“They were beating on [Harrison] when he was on the ground and our guys aren’t going to let that happen,” said Derek Anderson. “There were some unnecessary things going on.”
Two Raiders were ejected from the game and the team was penalized 13 times, including five 15-yarders. Two penalties were for unnecessary roughness, two for unsportsmanlike conduct and one for taunting.
“I felt like they were baiting us into some things,” said Mike Adams. “I felt like that was their mentality. But we came out in the second half and kept our composure and they got two more 15-yard penalties.”
Things got particularly out of hand on the Browns’ final drive of the first half, when players fought and flags flew. It started with Mack retaliating against Warren and taking the swing. He was flagged half the distance to the goal line, to the Browns’ 6. Two plays later, Richard Seymour and Rex Hadnot were both flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness, which offset. But Seymour was penalized 15 yards again for complaining about the call.
Two plays after that, cornerback Stanford Routt was flagged for unnecessary roughness and ejected from the game for head-butting one of the Browns. That moved the Browns to the Oakland 27, and two plays later, Anderson hit Mohamed Massaquoi with a 19-yard touchdown pass.
“It got a little feisty out there,” said guard Eric Steinbach. “We didn’t keep our cool at first. We’re not at choir practice out there. But that late stuff they were doing sparked us and helped us get seven points. We were able to overcome it and not do anything stupid.”

But the last game of the season, and possibly his last game in the NFL, I would like the Ravens to beat the crap out of him, as he failed miserably, got booed and ran out of town.
He brought it upon himself. Maybe it will be a good life lesson in humility.

There is a “skills” clause in JaMarcus Russell’s contract that stipulates if his “skills” aren’t up to a professional standard they can terminate his contract with having to pay out the remainder or be penalized for doing so.
Do you think that the Raiders want to give JaMarcus a chance to succeed so he can invalidate the “skills” clause and get more money?
That last question was a rhetorical one…

Stanford Routt deserved to be tossed, no doubt.
Seymour’s unsportsman-like penalty was deserved, even if his personal foul wasn’t — he’s supposed to be a rock and a leader.
The leaders…coaches, players, all of them…needed to take charge in a wild, crazy game where anything could happen. Slow it down, make it manageable and win-able.
The Cleveland players and coaches predicted a Raiders meltdown, and they got what they predicted…the Raiders couldn’t take the heat and lost their composure. But, the he-said, he-said about who are the dirtier players in a scrum is nothing but boys being boys.
Football’s a tough sport. Quit the whining, and get back in the pile.

Sounds like “for cause”, lol
Jamarcus will do the bare minimum to get paid. If he has a clause that says he has to be under 280, he will show up at 278, and than credit his hard-work.
He doesn’t want it. Being a great NFL player requires to much work, not “worth it” in his eyes.
We should split amicable, give him his $3 million and part ways. If that happened I doubt Jamarcus would even take a smaller salary to try to get on another team as a backup. He will just walk away from it all, and let the party continue.

As far as making no sense, aren’t you THE VERY PERSON that continually posts on a daily basis how LITTLE SENSE the Raiders make as an organization since the beginning of free agency?
In the end it is all about money, hence the very reason for a very rare “skills” clause that doesn’t usually appear in most, if not all, professional football contracts.

Frye lost the game for the Raiders yesterday with (3) count them three picks!!! He is a much closer to a STIFF THAN A STAR. For Cable to stick with him is dumb. He has not earned anything. Russell won the game he made his first start and he look over matched against that HOF (NOT) Cleveland D-fense. Gradkowski stinks too, he is a candy arm Jeff Garica wanna be. Russell had better get committed in 2010 from day one of the off-season (is either your answer or not) or eat the contract and move on and get a real freakin QB and some real Tackles in here and lets talk about a playoff run next season. Not done and we are looking at 3-5 wins next year. I am tired of this BS, a disgrace to the uniform or the 3x Superbowl Champion Raiders. They STINK!!!! SEVEN YEARS IN THE WILDERNESS IS LONG ENOUGH! But, like usual, his argument lost weight as soon as someone threw out a few names of successful QB’s that were also Christian (like that matters in even the slightest, smallest way as to how well they play the game).

What confuses me is, if the Raiders felt it necessary to include this rare “skills” clause in the first place, than obviously they had an inkling that his skill set might be lacking. If that is the case then why draft the kid, let alone with the 1st pick in the draft!
If I am getting ready to purchase a Samsung 60″ LED LCD HDTV I am going to do all of the research and if I have any doubt in my mind that this TV isn’t going to perform up to my standards in any way, I AM NOT BUYING THE DAMN THING!

What is true is that Al Davis drafted JaMarcus Russell. Even when Kiffin pleaded with him not too.
It is also true that either Davis, Cable or both forced Russell into the lineup as the starter when he wasn’t prepared and hence THREW AWAY THE SEASON.
Its also true that Al Davis will decide unilaterally if Russell comes back for a 4th year.

I have no ill will toward Russell in any way. It’s not like he drafted himself.
In this microwave society that we now live, gone are the days when a rookie qb is groomed by a veteran for a few years as a back up, before being thrust into the starting role. There is a reason why guys like Aaron Rodgers are able to succeed when they become starters. Unfortunatley situations like Rodgers are very rare in this day and age.
I also think that is why the NFL game has started to resemble the college game more so every year. Teams are forced to adjust to a rookie’s skill set and experience because they have so much money invested in them and results are expected NOW or sooner.
So they create schemes and plays that are similar, or even the same, that they played in college to maximize results. On the field it translates to more spread offenses with qb’s in the shotgun and gimmick formations like the Wildcat. It has also contibuted to the demise of the True Fullback!

To be fair, Russell let a lot of people down with coming to camp overweight, skipping meetings, not mastering the playbook, missing OTA sessions, not working on mechanics etc…etc…
With that said, QBs shouldn’t be drafted high. No player should. Trade down or hold the pick until the mid-to-late 1st round. That way you don’t make the huge financial investment.
The Raiders are really good at developing talent anyways….they need self-motivated players that can do it themselves….hell, look at Nnamdi.
The Raiders are better off going to the veteran route. Sort of what was suggested by AIG….I don’t think you will ever win a Super Bowl this way…but it sure as hell will beat 10+ losses every stinking year!

I heard if the NFL goes uncapped next year they’re gonna try to make a rule so that teams can’t just dump players with big contracts. Not sure if there’s any truth to that tho. We may be stuck with J-Russ next year regardless and i doubt Al gives up on him just yet. If he were smart he’d better train the entire offseason, and not 2 weeks before camp.

Given that the league adopted an eight-year rotation from 2002 through 2009, which would ensure that every team plays in every other stadium and hosts every other team at least once during that period, will the same formula apply for 2010?
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello pointed out to us that, per page 16 of the 2009 NFL Record and Fact Book, the league decided after the 2008 season to apply the same formula in 2010.
Aiello tells us that the formula will continue to apply beyond 2010, too.
Presumably, the formula will remain in place unless and until the current alignment of eight four-team divisions changes.
The current format consists of each team playing two games against each division opponent, four games against all of the teams in another division in the same conference, two games against the teams from the other two divisions in the conference that finished in the same position (e.g., the first-place team in the AFC East plays the first-place teams from the other two divisions), and one game against each of the four teams from one division in the other conference.

Watching Frye on Sunday was as bad as watching the Colts “turtle” with Painter. If you put Frye & Painter together, you STILL would not have a serviceable NFL QB. When you stare down your intended receiver in the NF friggin’ L, well..that’s bad enough! But when you have a pop-gun for arm strength, you are DOOMED to throw multiple ints every game. i cannot understand if you have three of the best running backs in the nfl why you do not use them more .the wide recivers they have are rookies except for schiling and the tight end miller. and why they cannot stop the run that has been a problem for years. they have the players with exception of the quarterback they have problems which i know is the biggest problem. but there are plenty of back up qbs they could get to solve that problem. remember rich gannon what he done you should never draft a qb in the first round.
