Cable uses the word exceptional to describe an offense ranked 31st in the league…can you imagine the orgasm he would go into if the offense ranked 15th?

SnB, re post 141. I offered the same idea prior to this year’s draft. Make al trade his 1st & 2nd round picks for a bunch of later picks, and let him sign a ton of combine freaks. At least 2 or 3 will turn out bargains.
    =======================================================
I agree with you 100%…been better with Johnny Knox (5th round) over Darius Heyward-Bey. DHB has to be one of the worst top 10 picks ever.

Hopefully he goes into a cocoon in the offseason and re-emerges as an NFL receiver. We know he is going to get every chance to succeed…while Murphy becomes our slot receiver…

    ========================================
Never liked his offence AND kept him for 5 years.
He never like Shanahan’s offence and kept him for 12 games.
The difference was that Gruden spoke to Davis and not at him. He told Al what he wanted to hear. That’s the difference. Al needs to have his ego stroked, and any coach that comes in, will have to do that.

Judging off past results, I think it’ll be another no-name, young OC. Somebody not on the radar.

  • jhill

It’s not out of the question that Gruden will be back. If we could do Shell II, then Gruden II isn’t so far fetched!

Very surprised that Gruden didn’t end up in Washington. Left a slight crack in the door for his return to Oakland!

Seriously SnB? I don’t think he will ever be that good, but that’s a tough list to crack.

I don’t think he is even in the top 5 WR’s bust of top 10 picks (Troy Edwards, Charles Rogers, Mike Williams come off the top of my head)

DHB will always be inconsistant and not worthy of a top 10 picks, but I am confident he will show a few flashes of brilliance to take him out of the all-time bust talk.

  • jhill

Russell Okung, Trent Williams, or Anthony Davis.

Those are the 3 names we need to consider in rd 1.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    JHill,

I’d be happy if Davis just trades the pick for Shaun Rogers or Barrett Rudd….

  • jhill

DHB is going to be a decent player once you get a coach who knows WTF he is doing. 1 reverse all year is ridiculous! No quick slants or getting him matched against a LB or S from the slot is ridiculous.

    DHB will be ok, IMO.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

I don’t want Cable back, but I am scared of the reports I hear of owners anticipating a 2011 lockout, and not wanting new coaching staffs on the books for that year.

John Fox is one example, and Tom Cable falls right in line with that. Expect lots of lame-duck coaches in 2010 if no new labor-deal gets ironed out.

Instead Al will insist on him hiring an OC, and than having Cable sit-in on an interview of a guy who will be next in line to replace him. Sounds bizarre enough.

  • NorthernD

    JHill,
From what I’ve heard, it sounds like Shanahan is going to Washington.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

No Shaun Rogers. Complete loafer and has always been injury-prone and part of awful defenses. Weight and conditioning is always an issue with him.

No better than Tommy Kelly, except maybe Rogers does block a lot of kicks.

  • jhill

Same with Bush and McFadden, they just need a decent OC.

We should know every Sunday that we are going to see Bush get AT LEAST 15 carries a game. We should know that McFadden will get5 or 6 passes thrown his way via screen plays, or out of the slot. We should see McFadden running to the edges about 10 times per game.

There are just some things we should see week in and week out that we just are not seeing. Like Nnamdi said, we need an identity!

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Vegas Raider,

Think its coincidence that DHB got his foot stepped on after the K.C game…A game where he drops a TD pass and then bobbles another ball for an INT on a game winning drive?

DHB should not be handed anything in camp next year. Murphy and Schilens are way beyond him now and he will never catch them..and JLH makes enough plays to help the team during games….

DHB was a terrible pick cause everyone knew his limitations.

He needed to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick and brought along gradually. But instead he is syphoning off cap space and playing time from players who produce….even Watkins is ahead of DH-Bust

  • 4evaRaider

Pete Bush could run and block more the more he is in there, meaning if you get a chance to get in the game and help your TEAM like Trevor Scott or say Tyvon Branch who will play anywhere if it will help the team and get them more playing time.Only a Big Dummy refuses’ playing time, imo

Also when you have players like Scott or Branch that will do anything to help their team win and then you got Bush that DIDNT

That cant be good for the team, imo

  • jhill

    ——————————————————-

Not really bizzare at all. Actaully would be a pretty smart move to strip Cable of all OC and play calling responsibilties and MAKE him focus on things like meeting with Jamarcus Russell instead of waiting until after the season. Focusing on what’s going on on the field instead of trying to rack his brain for a play to call. Notice how the play always comes in with like 11 seconds on the play clock? Geeze!

An Asst Head Coach/OC would be just what the doctor ordered. And let him bring in a QB coach and WR coach, and let Cable run the Oline. Would also allow us to keep Marshall and see what year 2 brings for him.

    SnB,

I don’t disagree, but on one hand you can’t get mad at team for playing him, than not give them credit for putting him on ice for the last quarter of the season.

I like you, don’t believe the foot-injury fully. He should not get anything next year as far as starting time, but just like Russell, you drafted him and at least have to give him an opportunity to live up to their draft-billing.

But WR was a huge need for this team, our 2008 WR production was the worst in the history of the NFL. Literally!!!

    Wrong player, right position.

  • DirtyRaccoon

O, I think cable is a awesome line coach, and a good head coach, but he is no play caller/ O coord!

I think if we had a better play from or qb, we would have won at least 2 more games. I don’t think Cable is great at putting using his players in a way to get the best out of the bunch.

We NEED better “FIT” DT’s also.

  • NorthernD

“I don’t want to go out there and not be able to make plays,” Heyward-Bey said.

The first thing he said was ” I DON’T WANT TO GO OUT THERE…”
If you heard a boxer start a quote like that, you’d throw in the towel. The guy’s heart is just not in it.
Go back and check any quote by Miller or Murphy, or Marvin Harrison or Larry Fitzgerald or Jerry Rice.
They would never start a sentence that way.
DHB is done. He doesn’t want to play.

    ________________________

That didn’t even happen when Cable was head coach did it? And Bush was well within his right to refuse a position chance. The man is a great HB and he isn’t the physical type player that he needs to be as a FB. He would have been nuts to change positions. The Raiders may have decided to keep him at FB and suddenly Bush goes from a position of glory and money to a position that is important, but that doesn’t get the glory or make the money.

Only an idiot would have allowed the Raiders to change his position to FB…if the Raiders wanted a FB, they should have signed a blocking FB when Oneal went down instead of trying to mess with Bush’s career.

Asking a guy to switch from fs to ss or from de to olb is one thing, but asking a man to switch from hb to fb is a major change, in both skill sets and earning potential.

Bush was right, the Raiders were wrong…if that puts him in the doghouse until he can sign with a team that will properly utilize his skills, then so be it…the Raiders will regret it, not Bush.

    J,

The “bizarre” part of it comes from Cable being involved in the process of hiring someone who will be looking to take his job if he fails. What companies do that?

But I do agree with you, get a real OC and let Cable focus on the “rah-rah” aspect of things and his great “game management” (lol)

I remember asking Jerry in one of his chats before the year, if the Raiders would not hire an OC to save a little money. Jerry said, “They WILL hire an OC”

    Great call Jerry!!!

The Raiders run D has been awful for the last 6-7 years, and you have to wonder what is the root cause.

We have a great tackling secondary, with Nmamdi and Branch being among the leaders in tackles at their position for help in the run D.

We also added, this year alone, a Pro-Bowl level player (Seymour), a savy veteran (Gregg Ellis) and a 3rd round pick who is among the best at his position in the rookie class (Shaughnessy).

So what gives? The LB’s I say. No upgrade at that position for years. Have to get a play-maker amongst one of the 3 LB’s. Morrison is regressing, and Howard is inconsistant, and our 3rd LB has been a revolving door of guys the last 6+ years.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Vegas Raider,

I am pleased that DHB was put on ice. However, like Russell, why do we have to wait until mid-season when we knew this during training camp?

The Raiders, meaning Al Davis, has to let the best players play out of the gate. The Raiders are throwing away entire seasons based on this in-season scholarship stuff. Seasons!

I wish Davis would step back from the 53 man roster. That’s all Gruden wanted. Davis can control the draft, free agency, roster cuts etc….but let the doggone coaching staff pick the starters based on PERFORMANCE ON THE PRACTICE FIELD AND PRODUCTION IN GAMES.

The Raiders, read Al Davis, threw away the season trying to force a Russell/DHB square peg into a round hole.

Cable also gets the blame for icing Michael Bush and Johnnie Lee Higgins all year.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

If I remember correctly, Michael Bush lined up at FB anyway. He didn’t refuse to play the position…he just wasn’t happy about it. And why should he be happy about it. He sees himself as an elite running back…

On a side note, Justin Fargas should be the FB. He runs with reckless energy right into linebackers and D-Lineman on every play and he can block. Plus his YPC is in-line with a FB.

  • jhill

    SnB,

So did Davis force Fargas on us too?

Go back to Jeff Garcia for a second. He as much as told you that Cable’s philosophy was going to be something that the team was not ready for. A flat out air attack featuring Jamarcus Russell. That was CABLE’s plan.

Al told you he wanted to see a lot more Mike Bush and power 2 TE sets. He told you that Chaz and JLH were GREAT WRs. We haven’t seen ANY of that! Davis had been know to meddle with the defense, not the O. This in ept O is all on Cable.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

    SnB,

Again, don’t disagree Al needing to step away from starting spots and the final 53. No doubt about that.

WR is a little easier to ease a guy in during a game/season, than QB. Russell deserved the right to start week 1 due to his draft status, and he didn’t play that bad opening night. But after that awful Broncos game in week 3 is when he should have been benched. Maybe should have been at halftime.

I think JLH put himself on ice. How many drops, awful kick-returns and lack of effort on over the middle passes must we endure? He doesn’t play like he trusts his QB, coach or blocking. Part of it is just, and part of it is him taking a humongous step backwards in 2009. His roster spot should be in jeopardy next year, IMO, especially if Nick Miller can ever fix his shins and can return both kicks/punts.

  • Carl Weathers

I like Cable but he should be demoted bak to the O-line.

Or maybe even kept as HC but with a new OC I could live with cause I agree with a lot of his HC decisions and they seem to workout but the play calling is atrocious. Having Frye chuck it up 45 times while DMcf and Bush combining for 17 carries!!?!!

I thought he should have gone 70% run and 30% pass… he went the exact opposite. I’m not even capable of coaching HS teams but I knew that running the ball was going to give us the best chance tyo win. WTF!!

Frye sucked then and sucks now…

  • Carl Weathers

    Vegas Raider..

    JLH is a chicken sh!t.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Nick Miller? LOL…the 1st undrafted free agent to go 16 weeks on IR…

I don’t think an established and productive veteran would receive such treatment

    schitt, sorry… didn’t know you were waiting…

    sometimes i do other things…

    Bush is a running back… a ball carrier…

    he knows that…

what they wanted him to do was career suicide… no way was that bullschit going to be temporary…

    also… and i did say this before…

i would never apprentice myself to someone who isn’t better than me…

my attitude right now about this crap is that Cable needs to go… if not, then trade Bush to another team…

and then all you Fargas supporters can whine about why didn’t we keep him…

also… if fargas was so good, why did it take him 4 years to become first team???

why were the Raiders always looking for a better solution at running back???

Bush is way the best back… he knows it… i’ll bet fargas and mctiptoe know it too…

think of this: if you were a finish carpenter and was asked to do framework (thinking that this may not be reversible) would you do it??? would you do it if you knew the pay was less??? would you do it if you knew it was a dead end career path???

Bush, were it not for a broken leg… would have been a 1st round pick… we got him cheap in the 4th…

but true to the Raider way… it’s not about what you can do… it’s about the reach around you give Al or the HC…

The players the team should target with a top 10 or top 8 pick…..should be (of course Suh, but he will be gone within top 3 picks) RDE prospect Derrick Morgan, 3-Technique DT Gerald McCoy, OT Bruce Campbell, OT Russell Okung.

The MLB the Raiders should probably look at ahead of Spikes is the BEAST MLB from Kentucky Micah Johnson. 6′2, 255. Built like a brickhouse and plays like Jon Beason they say. Doubt he lasts until round 2.

Three things are for certain…..the dumb old man better not pick the overweight two down player Cody….or another SS in Mays or a freakin CB with that top 8-10 pick!

The other necessary moves for this team is hiring a REAL GM AND REAL HC who are WINNERS!!

—”Coach Tom Cable may have sealed his fate with owner Al Davis when he suggested Monday that the Raiders could have made the playoffs if not for JaMarcus Russell’s early-season play. “You know we would have,” Cable responded to a question about the Raiders gunning for a Wild Card spot. Though Cable seems a tad over-confident, the Raiders were 2-7 in Russell’s starts while improving to 3-3 in games started by Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye. Hey, Al Davis might actually respect that from Cable since Al did the same thing to Marcus Allen.

    JHill,

I think he is a projected 2nd rounder. Our saving grace is that, although a track star, apparently they say he lacks the straight-line speed, and is only 5’9.

Which means he is probably a great football player, but doesn’t have the “measurables” Al desires, so we won’t draft him and he will become a Pro-Bowler.

A top 10 pick as a kick returner. That makes Raider sense. Maybe use the 2nd rounder on a back-up long snapper…
