I dont know the answer to any of those questions Pete but as I’ve stated many times I think Dmac is our best back….

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

    the evidence says otherwise…

  • jhill

A top 10 pick as a kick returner. That makes Raider sense. Maybe use the 2nd rounder on a back-up long snapper…

    ——————————————————

    LOL!

  • NorthernD

    Florida Pete,
You’re right about Bush changing roles. That would be career suicide. If anyone should change, it should be Fargas. He could put on 20 lbs, and he likes running into people anyway.

  • 4evaRaider

Well IMO Dmac is our best back abd will continue to improve

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

yes, it is the only thing keeping us out of the playoffs…

woe is us… for want of a long-snapper… the playoffs would await…

He is the best cornerback in the country Northern D!!!

I don’t think we should go DB in round 1, I would prefer LB, but this dude is a stud.

Remember the difference Hester made for the Bears? He was a 3rd round pick, and nowhere near the defensive player as Arenas.

Production, production, production….that’s what we need to focus on. Everybody wants an O-lineman, but if we take that kid from Maryland with the best forty time for an OT on a crappy offense, he will be a bust.

I just want the most productive player at the position we draft. Doesn’t matter to me what position, this Raiders team can be upgraded at literally every position but kicker.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

Statiscally we are the worst team at returning kicks, and one of the worst returning punts.

This had to be addressed!! If it is Nick Miller fine. If it is Areans in round 2, fkn fantastic.

With our inept offense, an occasionally kick/punt returner to shorten the field would do wonders.

  • daraider09

Anyone see Favre splike the ball last night and get no flag? The double standard in this league makes it unfair and unwatchable sometimes. I mean what happens EVERY time a Raider does that? Yeah, 15 yrds. OR in Zach Miller’s case, drops the ball, not even spiking it. Rediculous.

  • jhill

We have Nick Miller, we don’t need Arenas as a KR.

  • M Lonetree

Why go for an itty bitty Red Tider when you can go for the best? Draft Usain Bolt. Mount Davis could then be turned into a Jamaican Smoking Area.
Might not make for a better football team but there would be plenty of smiles and very happy gulls.

    ^^^^ I like the way you’re thinking M…

  • 4evaRaider

It would be easy to fix this problem ….

Eliminate the FB-HB distinction and have 2 RB’s….

Bush and Dmac together on all downs every down would be an extremely hard duo to defence.

If anyone can forward this up the line please do so

Jim Fassell’s kid did a hellova job ruining the return game…. Isn’t Cable in contract for next year? Al would have to fire him for cause if that were the case. Time to polish up the ol’ overhead projector baby!

    vegas raider,
I’ve been glancing at some of the mock drafts and scouting reports and haven’t seen his name at the top of any list. It will all change by March anyway.
Taking a CB first, I would disagree with that, but to throw in the Kick returner arguement will get a definite negative response.
I think we stand a better chance of taking Usain Bolt in the 7th.

  • DirtyRaccoon

How far will Al trade up to over draft Taylor Mays?

    Agreed.

Soooooooooooo, now what do we talk about?

  • Florida Pete

the rules changes ruined our return game…

if i didn’t know better, i would swear that the league saw that the Raiders were getting good at something… then decided that just could not be allowed to stand…

hence the rule change this past summer:

The kicking team now is prohibited from bunching too many players in the middle of the field, or on a single side of the field. That eliminates dangerous scrambles involving too many players on onside kicks.

The receiving team now is prohibited from using a blocking “wedge” of more than two players on a kickoff return.

  • NorthernD

    Florida Pete,
I think those had more to do with concussions. Once a game you’d see the wedge, or wedge buster laying on the ground with a bent coconut.
Bringing in the no contact after 5 yards, was definitely brought in to defeat the Raiders man defence.

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

Pete, that rule didn’t seem to hurt other teams’ speacial teams play…

We should have never allowed our ST coach to leave for USC…the loss of schneider and Rathman over the past two seasons has really hirt this team. I don’t care if they were kiffin guys, they were producing results and should have been retained at all costs.

  • http://www.Move2Alameda.com KoolKell

Keep the onus on Davis, and quit scapegoating others without the power to change anything.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

    Northern D,

LOL at Usain Bolt. He doesn’t have to go through the draft process, if we want him we can sign him today.

Kick-return is a big part of the game, and has crippled our offense with awful field-position all year. Again, it was a joke about Arenas (drafting a DB at #7), but if you think PR/KR is not important than I can’t help you.

My whole point is to draft production, not measurables, you know like the whole DHB/Crabtree deal that worked so brilliantly for us. Arenas is one of the best CB’s in the country, and I think an immediate difference-maker. If he is there in the 2nd and we pass on him, we will regret it. And if we pass on him, it will be because he is 5’9 and Al will rather draft a DB from the University of Tulsa who runs a 4.3 and is 6’2.

  • Florida Pete

    please…

my al davis apologist days are over…

    results matter…

i have a business partner who likes to tout his 30 plus years in the business…

And if Cable is hoping to make this a public choice between Russell and Cable, Davis’ 100 percent history is to go with the player, then try to find a better coach.

The Raiders aren’t typically fond of finding a middle ground, but there is one here: Russell and Cable have failed each other.

Russell is out of shape, slouches through Raiders HQ, shows no leadership ability and generally acts like he’s entitled to a job that he never earned.

But Cable and his staff are the grown-ups here. They’re supposed to reach Russell either with amazing teaching technique or tough love or great schemes or whatever it took.

Nothing worked. And Cable doesn’t want the blame. Tom, how did you do this year coaching the QBs?

“I think at times an exceptional job and at times an average job,” Cable said.

Imagine how poorly Russell would have played if Cable wasn’t doing such an exceptional job with him!

Are you sure? I thought all players have to declare for a draft before they can just sign with a team. I know baseball has an exception for foreign players, but I didn’t think the NFL had that same exception.

    Pete,

That rule was put in because that dude from the Bills got paralyzed on a kick return with the wedge.

Although it’s worth noting that the Texans clearly used a wedge on that kick return TD against us and it wasn’t flagged.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

KoolKell is simply keeping the focus where it belongs. Its easy to get distracted with discussion about coaches and 1st round busts.

Al Davis makes all of these disasterous decisions

  • NorthernD

    Vegas,
I agree that KR/PR is an important part of the game. I remember Rich Upchurch of the donkeys scaring the cr@p out of me. But that is something better addressed with a later round pick. Running full speed into an oncoming mass of humanity requires financial incentive.

As for taking a 5’9″ CB, it just doesn’t seem likely with Al, however talented he may be. They were fools for passing on Ed Reed and Bob Sanders, but they just didn’t meet the Raider standard.
I’m sure you can just look at a list of prospects by now and figure out which ones are on the Raider list and which ones aren’t.

  • Chris in NY

Can’t make it to the chat today. Someone please ask Jerry this:

What are the chances Cable stays under each of the following circumstances: A) We get blown out by Baltimore. B) Lose a close, competitive game. C) Win.

  • M Lonetree

    408,

that link you gave regarding the Colts forum reminded me of something Dilfer said last night. Trent said that no matter how much NFL coaches and executives deny that there is an influence, behind closed doors many decision makers ARE influenced by the press, the fans and the talking head opinionators.

Good for Caldwell and Polian that they didn’t listening to the talking heads and they rested their meal tickets in a meaningless game (that the donks are now squarely behind the eight ball because of the Jets victory vindicates the decision completely). If Addai or Clark or Wayne or any of the others had ripped a knee by playing then those same fans so outraged that the Colts dared to lose a regular season game for the first time in a year and a half would have been howling at the waste.

Fan(atacism) is an untrustworthy base for decision making.

Can anyone be as selfish as the players of the Florida Gator football team? They beg a man who has had heart problems for four years to continue to coach them even if it might kill him. A new low reached.

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

I had to laugh when Cable was touting 6 wins as some great goal or achievement for this team at the press conference. Wow, that would be a 1 game improvement over last season…sign that man up to an extension!

Imagine how good we will be in 7 years under Cable!!!!!

  • Florida Pete

what i don’t understand is a team’s willingness to pay an unproven rookie the same as an established free agent…

at a minimum, i would dispatch coaching staff around the country to investigate every potential 1st round pick that i might be interested in…

the objective: investigate character and dedication to football… interview not just coaches but friends, relatives, enemies, pastors, teachers, anybody with anything to say about the kid…

    i know i said it before… but if it’s my money and i have a top 15 pick… i draft a solid 3rd rounder and offer 3rd round money… take it, leave it, wouldn’t matter to me… but i won’t be out 30 million over some 20 year old…

Finally this effing decade is ending nothing but busts and bubbles.

  • Chris in NY

What do you guys think about Trindon Holliday, the KR/PR/RB/WR from LSU in the middle rounds of the draft? He’s like 5-6, 165 or something but runs a 4.2 and is extremely quick. Could be another Sproles.

I know Al is all about Height/Weight/Speed guys and Holliday is only one of those things. But I think he could be a real big-play weapon. And big plays are what you need to win in the NFL right now. Plus we need a legitimate KR — who ever heard of using fullbacks to return kicks?

  • M Lonetree

    Dakota,

a friend of mine works at the Westin on Maui and he said that the whole Ken Griffey clan (senior and junior etc.) was in the bar watching football last night. My friend identified himself as a Cubs fan and Griffey offered to buy him a drink out of sympathy.

drafting in the top of the draft produces more busts than football players. Trade down and get more picks for less money.

who would you send on the scouting assignment? Randy Hansen?

trading down used to be a very viable option…

the problem today is that no team wants to draft in the top ten…

too damned expensive and the reward is simply not worth the risk…

Every team knows that…hence the difficulty of trading down out of the top ten. Most teams now what to know what you will give THEM to take on the burden of that top ten draft pick.
