Seymour perplexed by flurry of flags

A day later, Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour was still confused by the flags which seemingly outnumbered the snowflakes at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The Raiders were hit with 13 penalties for 126 yards. The only time they had more penalties was 14 against Washington, and the 126 yards was a season high, topping 188 against the Redskins.
The yardage figure was, in fact, the highest for the Raiders since they drew 16 penalties for 149 yards in the 2005 season opener in New England.
It appeared as if officials sensed the game getting out of hand and then resorted to penalties in an attempt to get it back under control.
“That’s how I felt. I’ve never seen flags thrown like that,” Seymour said, apparently not remembering the 2005 season opener when he was on the other side of the field. “It was so ticky-tack. Obviously we have to understand how the game is being played and how the game is being called and play accordingly. We didn’t do a good job of that after we understood that they were going to throw it if you looked the wrong way.”
Seymour was responsible for back-to-back penalties during the Browns’ 93-yard scoring drive near the end of the half. The first, for unnecessary roughness, was offset by an unnecessary roughness call on Browns’ guard Rex Hadnot.
Seymour, however, protested and earned an addtional 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
“ I asked him a question like, ‘Why did you throw it on me?’ He didn’t even know he called (it on) me,” Seymour said. “The ref didn’t know what number is was supposed to be on. It was a bunch of mess.
“I guess he just tried to figure out who he wanted to throw it on. I was the lucky number, which I’ve never seen anything like that in all my days of playing.”
Regarding the original scuffle which broughton the first flag, Seymour said, “There’s always little tussles. It’s part of football, you know? And you never want to go out and do anything to hurt your team or give your team bad field position. I could understand, well, if you hit the quarterback late, that’s a reason for a late flag. Or if they’re protecting quarterback, or if it’s a late hit on a guy. But if me and you get into a jawing match, I don’t feel like that’s an excuse for a personal foul or anything like that.
“But I thought all game long, once we understood how the game was being called, that’s when we should have backed off and said, hey, let’s just keep our mouth shut and play ball.”
Tight end Tony Stewart, one of two ejections along with Stanford Routt, was tossed for bumping official. Replays didn’t show it, nor did the Raiders’ team copy of the game, according to Stewart.
Stewart said he was double-teaming the Browns’ Alex Hall on a kickoff return and was punched in the face by Hall.
“I’d give them one percent chance that they couldn’t have seen the play, seen that happen. I was saying to the refs, ‘You didn’t see that? You didn’t see him punch me in the face? You’re not going to throw a flag?’ And the ref came up to me and put his hand on my chest and started pushing me,” Stewart said. “I just swiped his hand off my chest. Just a natural reaction.”
Stewart, one of the more professional and even-keeled Raiders players, was stunned to find himself out of the game.
“I was just in utter disbelief,” Stewart said. “In the locker room it was like almost comical because if I could have told you what was going to happen from last week to this week, that wasn’t one of the things I would have said.”
The worst call may have been a taunting call on Zach Miller, who merely dropped the ball to the ground after a 31-yard completion. It ended up not hurting anything, as a later pass interference penalty on the Browns put the Raiders in scoring position anyway.
Following the game, Seymour talked about the “Raider mystique,” the implication they got a raw deal simply because they’re the Raiders.
Defensive end Greg Ellis said the Raiders had demonstrated to officials they were an undisciplined team and were treated in kind the rest of the afternoon.
“I have to say we did it to ourselves because we put the referees on guard against us,” defensive end Greg Ellis said. “When we do it to ourselves, the ref looks like, ‘You know what? We’re fed up with these guys.’ Any questionable call …”

The Raiders can blame the officials all the live-long day. But, the refs didn’t throw three interceptions. Quarterback Charlie Frye did. The refs didn’t call four straight failed pass plays from the Browns’ 2-yard line. Raiders coach Tom Cable did.
And, the refs certainly did not let Browns running back Jerome Harrison run them over a franchise-record 39 times for 148 yards. Seymour and The Gang did.
Who needs a conspiracy to beat the Raiders when they play like that?

All seemed OK enough just before halftime. Cleveland’s 10-0 jump-start was whittled to a 10-6 lead. Then, a scuffle broke out at the Browns’ 25 with 1:30 left in the second quarter.
Seymour was called for unnecessary roughness, though he said he hit his own teammate accidentally. Browns right guard Rex Hadnot was flagged for an offsetting unnecessary roughness.
It should have ended there, but no. Seymour was then charged with a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, moving Cleveland to its 40.
Two plays later, Routt was ejected for a flagrant head butt. Just like that, the Browns were spotted the Oakland 27.

Not only were the officials bad and border-line biased, WTF was taking so long for some of these calls?
It would be obvious off-sides, and they would meet for a good minute or two and than make the call. It was driving me crazy!!!

The answer is no, they didn’t see it. They were too busy waiting for you to make a mistake. I think the refs make a lot of assumptions about the Raiders and just sit on their hands waiting for them to make a mistake.

39 rushes for 148 yards is only a 3.8 YPC average. Who cares if he set a franchise record for carries if he didn’t even average 4 yards per? Cribbs was bottled up as well.
The 3 INTs and generally horrendous red zone offense was what lost this game. The refs were terrible and were certainly a contributing factor to the outcome, but I guess that’s what you get when a 5-9 team is playing a 3-11 team — bottom of the barrel officiating.

All I know is the great Jerry Rice said in a TV interview, years after he was retired, that the officials seemed to target the Raiders. That he never experienced anything like it with any other team. That the Raiders had more strange and flat-out terrible calls go against them than anybody.
This isn’t me or some other fan who’s just pointing out the obvious from what we see on TV. This is arguably the greatest football player of all-time making this point. It was after his Raider days were over. And it’s a guy whose primary team with which he’s identified isn’t even the Raiders. Come on.

Cooler heads will prevail, and the mature players will understand they lost their composure. The immature players will not get it…now, or ever. Stanford Routt was looking for trouble, and he found it. Richard Seymour needed to make more tackles than comments.
If it’s true the team realized they needed to stop doing things that got the attention of the refs…and kept doing those things anyway…then they absolutely have nobody to blame but themselves. No matter how bad (or good) the calls were.
The refs lost control of the game, and throwing the flags didn’t make it a better product for the fans in the stands, or at home…and it sure didn’t bring the game under control. The league should be as embarrassed as the Raiders should be for the collective loss of composure on the field yesterday. It didn’t much resemble football.

Theoretically, I will give you Langston Walker going down impacting the running game.
However, that theory wasn’t much tested yesterday….1 carry for 2 yards for the last 30 minutes of regulation?
My theory is that had justin fargas been available, we would have seen 10 or so carries in the 2nd half.
Davis needs to fire the coach again. Cable last game SHOULD be next week.

Gallery’s injuries have hurt our o-line as a unit.
Satele, Morris & Pears have all failed trying to replace him there. Langston Walker played well the past few games there, but we was not signed to play guard. nor does a Langston Walker absence mean the running game is flushed down the toilet.
If Kell is right and Cable abandoned the run game because of a Langston Walker injury, he is an idiot and should be fired on the spot.

The whole pre-halftime meltdown should have never happened and I blame Tom Cable.
Let’s set the stage: 1:30 on the clock, cleveland at own 7, Raiders down 10-6 with 2 timeouts.
Cleveland’s first play is a draw that gets 4 yards. Browns eager to go into the half, only Tom Cable thinks he has Peyton at QB, sadly it is Charlie Frye, and uses a timeout. Why, I don’t know? Can’t we just let the Browns concede, maybe use a timeout on 3rd down? As soon as he called it, I said now they are going to get the first to have this backfire. Of course it came 2 plays later on a 3rd and 16 draw (nice tackle Kirk!!) that they RB got the first and OB.
So instead of letting the Browns run out the clock and go to the half down 10-6, Cable thinks he has the Steel Curtain on D and can stop them and use his timeouts. With only 2 TO’s, the Browns could have still ran it 3 times and given us the ball back with maybe 30 seconds and no timeouts. What is Charlie Frye supposed to do with that?
I saw it coming from a mile away, and it unfolded exactly the reason way I would have never even considered calling a timeout after first down.
Cost us 4 points (Seabass bailed him out) a player, and our poise.
Great job Cable!!! Really has his finger to the pulse of the team doesn’t he?

I love the Ellis comment, you have a reputation gor being undisciplined of course calls will go against you. Cae has failed to utilize , groom, or develope the young talent. He has failed to bring the knuckle heads and underachievers into the fold. He has proven that has no clue on how to prepare a team week to week. He has demonstrated beyond the shadow of doubt he is inept as a play caller. He has failed to instill discipline. He has failed to take his defense to task when they flop he says we are close.The new head coach needs to be an offensive guy, he should have a special qb school and attach himself to no.2, in order to develope our qb. Playing fry ahead of Russel coupled with a loss has sealed the fate of cable.

Just heard on the radio that with so much concern of a lockout in 2011, teams(owners) are reluctant to hire coaching staffs this offseason and have them on the “books” for 2011. So expect lots of “lame-duck” coaches this year (with John Fox being the example that started the conversation).
So that may mean, Tom Cable in 2010 as a lame-duck. I can see Al insisting on hiring an OC, and having Cable sit in on the interview of a guy to ulitmately replace him. Sounds twillight-zonish enough for the Raiders

Only 3.79 yrds per carry. That’s because the Browns were awful throwing the ball. Anderson was throwing in between receivers. Hitting the ground 2 feet in front of the WR. Crowd was booing him. Looked like their version of JaLoser. One good pass that Mohamed Massaquoi beat Chris Johnson by getting away with an offensive PI that wasn’t called.

My daughter dates an assistant coach from Deroit Lions, he told us that it is a known fact that the refs will go against the raiders as soon as they get out of hand, he said all teams are aware of this and use it as a small part of the game plan. So I guess the conspiracy theory could have some substance all though not an excuse for clusterfu… of a game.

I would agree with Greg Ellis’ observation of the Raiders essentially giving the refs more fodder to throw more flags. However, it did appear that the refs were confused and had very little control of the game. I think they realized that when Alex Mack threw a punch and wasn’t kicked out of the game. At that point they knew they screwed up and decided to tighten the reins. The Raiders then gave the refs more opportunities to throw flags for stuff that they might not normally throw a flag for (the Tony Stewart incident is a good example). I believe the Raiders have nobody to blame but themselves for the loss (hell, we had 1st and goal from the 2 and we couldn’t put it in). But I also think the officiating crew was confused and disorganized and not really paying close attention to what was happening on the field.

Why do we have so many fat guys on our team? Cable gets no respect. Davis is not happy, I’m certain he wants his guys developed, not ridding pine. Also why can’t he figure out how to use bush and mac 20. Finally a screen pass!!! With all of the speed on this team you would think there would be a decent screen game. jamarcus will work hard this offseason, by his standards. eat healthy, except when buzzed late night, then its fast food frenzy, work out 3-4 times a week for about an hr., then watch film, probably of himself, last yr’s game @ den and the bowl game vs. notre dame. and finally work on his accuracy by throwing through a tire. working hard 4 tha money.

I cringe everytime I think about Lechtor and Jano.
Al gets tired of losing close games so he goes against the grain (as usual) picks P and K early, gets called a fool. turns out he is right and Shane may become the greatest punter ever to play the game while Jano is worth every penny.
Then the cringe part. As soon as he gets them we stop winning, get blown out most of the time and 10 years spent having the greatest kicking game ever are wasted.
They retire, we start winning but lose the close, important games because our kicking game sucks.

While the Chargers were generally complimentary of the Patriots following today’s victory, one notable exception was center Nick Hardwick, who went off on Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour in an expletive-laden tirade caught by colleague Rob Bradford in the Chargers locker room.
“There are 10 (bleeping) good players on that team,” Hardwick said. “But Richard Seymour is a dirty, cheap, little pompous (expletive).”
Hardwick was only getting started.
“He’s cheap and dirty and the head man just let him get away with it the whole time,” Hardwick said. “They’ve got 10 great players on that team and when Jarvis Green comes on the field, they’ve got 11 great players who compete how you’re supposed to play. But Richard Seymour is the biggest (expletive) I’ve ever played.”
Hardwick said Seymour usually plays this way, but that he, “took it it to another level today.”
“Head slapping, foot stomping in the pile, running by and throwing punches in your back,” Hardwick said. “He’s a (expletive). … There were a lot of things he did. There’s a field goal where he was stomping feet. Who stomps feet? And the officials weren’t doing anything about it. He plays like a punk.”

Cable is clueless that is the big issue. Yesterday and Dallas showed the no.2 is not the only problem, why can’t cable beat the teams they should beat? In fact they get blown out when they should win. This falls directly on the coach. Also the offense is awful, poor play calling is painful to watch. Players like cable because he doesn’t blast them, this is why he just go. Chuky was awesome he would put guys in check, we need some one to kick these guys in the rear.

Steve Wisnewski (devout Christian btw) was accused of being the dirtiest player in the league year after year. I never heard a single Raider Fan complain about him.

Cable has done a dozen ..oh hell…DOZENS of things wrong this year…and hasn’t done ONE SINGLE THING RIGHT THAT ANYONE CAN POINT TO (anyone, not you, 4eva..you aren’t capable of still following my point) that says Cable is/should be a solid coach..
NOT ONE THING.

Take out the emotion, and look at the QB situation…
Gradkowski: We already have an idea of what he can do. Did he earn a new contract? Absolutely. A “big” one? Absolutely not. A nice medium one would do. But, he shouldn’t play this game…we already know he’s a gamer.
Frye: We’ve seen what he can do…and know he’s not the under-fire answer at the position. Since we already know that, we need to move on.
Losman: Not fair to him, or the team, to expect him to do anything unless it’s an emergency. Ride the pines until camp, JP.
JaMarcus: This is the one last chance for JaMarcus to have a positive feeling going into the off-season. The team stands as much of a chance of winning with JaMarcus as they do with Frye…and it could be Jamarcus’s chance to throw down the gauntlet to Grad, JP, and a yet-to-be-named Free Agent, that he isn’t going to go away so easily.
For the sake of potential development, without diminishing the team’s chances to be competitive in the game, I say it’s time to put JaMarcus out there one more time.
A few months to digest the Ravens’ Defense, and his own QB future, might be just what the doctor ordered for JaMarcus. There aren’t any other on-the-job-training opportunities left for him this season.

I wasn’t complaining about Seymour being a dirty player. I just pointed out the fact that he was one and HD37 said he wasn’t. so I gave him some info to prove my point – that’s all.

I watched Cohwer on the side lines for years crying and trying….There is no way to collect a bet like this because of too many variables but….IF and yes thats a BIG IF there Richochet but….If Cable stays with the Raiders,he will win a S/B in less then 12 years like it took Coward…..Coward sucks but of course like him because you know nothing,my little fair-wheather coach coward lover

Seymour laid a karate chop to the neck on Rivers in the first game this year. Rivers got his technical on the next play because he was still mad. He had been sacked, was on the ground with Seymour on top when WHAM, karate chop to the neck.
Thats when I knew one of the dirtiest players in the league was now a Raider!!

RRS — You’re joking, right? That sour grapes crybaby from the Chargers a few years ago, when they choked against NE? That makes Seymour dirty? That was from the same game Tomlinson whined like a little girl on the podium, too.
If the D-line had another two or three who played like Seymour, the D would be top-10 in every category.
Wiz had a much nastier temperment than Seymour has, on a play-by-play basis. Seymour is closer to Howie that way.

I wouldn’t start Russell. Even if they plan to keep him next year. The fans will turn on him and the situation will get nasty.
Russell should stay on the shelf.
I would start J.P Losman. He is going to be the starter next year if Cable is rightfully dismissed and there is an open and fair QB competition next year.

it took Bill Cowher 13 years to win a Super Bowl in Pittsburg.
Al Davis doesn’t have that much patience (see Gruden, Jon)
plus Mike Tomlin did the same thing in his 2nd season.

The ONLY way JaMarcus has a chance to be the starting QB next year (based on playing merit)…is if he starts this game, and plays well.
Otherwise, once Camp starts…given an even chance to win the job, and he will be, Gradkowski will win the job outright from JaMarcus.
JaMarcus needs the work…and the leg-up, if he can get it (without it, he’s probably toast). It’s “one more last chance” time for Russell.

People! Get over it! Gruden is not coming back to the Raiders. I’d love it if he did, but I’m guessing there ain’t enough money in the world to bring him back to work with Davis, and if there were Al sure as hell wouldn’t pay it to him.

Your only a dirty player to the refs if you get caught in the act.
Do refs pay more close attention to raider players and keep them on a shorter leash?
I doubt it but I’m not sure.
I’ve seen A LOT of weird questionable calls against the raiders.
For example. I’ve never seen the ‘tuck’ rule enforced before that game against pats.
Most times its just a fumble.
Vincent Jackson spinning the ball after catch is ‘illegal forward pass’ instead of fumble.

Gradkowski didn’t EARN anything. 3 games is not enough to make a decision on a guy that’s already bounced around to 4 teams in his short career. The only thing he’s earned is a chance to legitimately compete for the starting job.
Frye should be a coach next year or 3rd string. Good to have a guy like that around.
Losman: I’d give him a shot next week if Gradkowski can’t go. Let’s see what he can do….He’s my choice to start next year pending training camp.
Russell: He needs to shut it down. No benefit comes from playing him. He’s clearly not ready and it would be a waste to play him if they are going to cut him anyway. He’s had his chances and threw them away in spectacular fashion. I personally don’t think he deserves another chance. Handed a starting job and treating the team, the league, the black QBs before him that paved a way, Davis, the fans and his own alma mater and family with a tremendous amount of disrespect and indifference.
Should Russell come back? Only if restructured and only if he’s dedicated 100%!
BTW, I would bring in Chad Pennington or Jason Campbell

The Raiders have a lot to be ashamed of after yesterday’s game. The play calling sicked; the defense sucked, and the referees always suck. Please exclude Janikowski, he has played on a Pro Bowl level all year.

Al NEVER pays coaches what they’re worth and Gruden would require waaaay too much. Al needs to stick with Cable because, let’s face it, who else would be willing to coach the Raiders? Maybe somebody looking to pull a “Kiffin”
