Oak_Sebastian Janikowski 39-yard field goal, 4:06.
Notes:
– JaMarcus Russell gets 3 on a keeper, sneaks for a first down, then throws interception to Danell Ellerbe, who returns it to the 24-yard line. Looking for Zach Miller.
Willis McGahee gets 6 yards to the 16-yard line on the last play of the quarter.
– Raiders force another Baltimore punt, with Flacco scrambling and caught by Seymour, Morrison.
– Raiders continue to struggle on kick returns, with Parmalee getting to the 34-yard line on 33-yard return following Janikowski field goal.
– Michael Huff, Mike Mitchell dump Flacco for sack on third-and-8 to force Ravens punt. Low liner caught by Johnnie Lee Higgins on bounce. Russell gets good field position at Raiders 49.
Russell completes 10-yard pass to Louis Murphy, but Cornell Green jumps on a third-and-10, making it third-and-15. Russell throws laser to Chaz Schilens for 17 yards to the 27-yard line.
“Just what I “bleeping” said,” scremaed a voice in the Ravens press box.
Raiders burn first timeout of second half with 5:15 left in the third quarter, with Russell noticing personnel issue.
On third-and-9, Russell throws for 5 yards to Louis Murphy to set up 39-yard field goal attempt for Janikowski. He converts with 4:06 left in third quarter as Raiders close within 14-13.
– Russell’s first pass to Chaz Schilens gains 18 and gets them to the 32, out of shadow of own end zone. Michael Bush dumped for 3-yard loss on third-and-1. Lechler punts 59 yards (avearge to 51.13, record is 51.4). Big return, but holding penalty pushes Ravens to own 20.
– Ravens punt on first possession, Frye on a stationary bike. Cable talks to offense as a whole. Russell will start possession at 10-yard line.
Fans, as you can imagine, are less than excited.

You can’t sprinkle in a few bad plays with some good plays at the QB position. Just doesn’t work that way.

A thought on what Russell does wrong. Basically, he reacts to the play rather than anticipates it.
The good QBs study the D to know what the will do. They work with their receivers to anticipate where they will be. So when the play starts they already have an idea where the play is going and how the D will react. When they look down the field, they confirm what they thought rather than deciding what to do (at least, most of the time). This makes their reactions a split second faster. It also means they can throw the ball to where the play is developing rather than where it is. But Russell lacks study. That means he needs to decide what is happening before he throws. As a result, he often holds the ball too long trying to make a decision. The O line is not good enough to give him that time. As a result, he often throws off target or gets caught in a collapsing pocket and fumbles.
